Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: LibreOffice help menu

2017-01-19 Thread nasrin khaksar
hi.
did you try installing offline version of libreoffice help file?
you should download and install the help file separately.
if you did not this, when you open libreoffice help, you view the help
in website of libreoffice, not locally on your system!

Hi,

Was this version installed from the LO download page? If so, you must also
install the help for offline use package if you do not want to be redirected
to the WEB help pages. If this is an install from your OS, you may need to
also install an applicable package but I do not know which one for your OS.

I hope this helps.

trying to say. I suppose English is not your first language.

I have not used the keyboard; I am using the mouse.

Alt does NOT appear to activate the menu, although I would expect that

Alt together with H pops up the help menu, without down arrow. Right
arrow moves to the File menu.

it opened a web page instead of a help window. The web page is
https://help.libreoffice.org/index.php?title=5.2/Common/Help=en-US=UNIX=5.2#bm_id3149178

invoke help. How do I use it?

I did a clean install of Ubuntu 16.04 which uses LO vers 5.1.4.2.

When I look at my .config file I see /.config/libreoffice/4/user. Why
the '4', I expected '5'. Is this normal.

Regards, Jim

Yes, completely normal. When 5 was first developed, it was deemed
unnecessary to change/rename a users existing profile. For continuity,
new 5 installations also use 4 in the profile path.

Dave

OK, thanks.

Sure, at 4.4 we dropped support for OS X 10.7 (Lion) and earlier and also
of 32-bit builds for OS X, but you should probably update to the final

LibreOffice is released essentially each month. More so than other projects,
you can be assured that published security issues are resolved in a timely
fashion. We don't make a big deal of announcing it because it is routine
for this project.

Here is a small sample of the security patches LibreOffice applies and
builds into releases on a regular basis:

Try installing ODBCManageDataSourcesQ4 and its co-application
ODBCCreateDataSourceQ4. These are QT4 apps, but they worked for me on
LinuxMint 18.

Alternatively, you can configure the odbcinst.ini and odbc.ini files by
hand and put them in the appropriate places.

You might also want to bear in mind that not all datatypes available in
sqlite are correctly supported/interpreted by LibreOffice, even over
ODBC. This stems from the weak typing of sqlite, which LibreOffice
doesn't necessarily know how to interpret correctly.

Not directly, but if you install Crouton on top of ChromeOS, then yes,
you can also run LibreOffice.

I have installed Crouton on my Toshiba Chromebook 2 (2015) and am using

[libreoffice-users] Re: [libreoffice-documentation] Getting Started 5.1: Chapter 11: Graphics

2016-06-29 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
The documentation team needs people who have almost no experience with
LibreOffice and almost no knowledge of how to use it.

Such proof-reading is always tricky because it leads to people suddenly
gaining a far greater understanding of LibreOffice and that often tends to
detract from the value of continuing to do the proof-reading.

Fortunately the documentation team also has a need for people who are
experienced with LibreOffice to do "reviews" to test that what the guides
say will happen does actually happen.

There is a particular need for people with any understanding of Base to
help with the "Base Handbook".

Tom :)

[libreoffice-users] Re: [libreoffice-marketing] LibreOffice 5.2 New Features videos: scripts

2016-06-29 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
I just saw this on the "Marketing" mailing list. Usually i don't forwards
things from there but i thought this one might be of interest to a few
people here.

The Document Foundation has many different teams working on specific things
and generally welcomes new people joining their mailing list (or
whatever). It is sometimes trying out a few different teams before
settling down with one you enjoy.

It looks like Marketing have a few fun things to work on as time-limited,
contained, perhaps even bite-sized projects. See the email below.

Documentation always has bite-sized things to take on, such as
proof-reading (or technical review) of an individual chapter of a single
guide. These can often lead on to larger chunks of work depending on how
satisfying or enjoyable the task is for the person volunteering.

Good luck and regards from
Tom :)

[libreoffice-users] RE: LibreOffice 5.1.1.3 Writer new bug?

2016-05-22 Thread Madbanaan
Hi,

Thanks for your reply V Stuart Foote, it helped me.

I had an issue with Libreoffice 5.1.2.2 to turn auto-correct OFF for the ->.
It also kept correcting -> to → , even when I had removed all the rules and
turned off the auto-correction options.
I entered a rule that corrected -> to ->. That worked for me, I never got
the → anymore.

So I think you are right about it being a profile issue with the replacement
table.

Thanks,
Arno

Yes LibreOffice user support is via public Mail List with several services
providing archival access to the ML.

However there are multiple public "support" channels for the project
forcusing on different facets, all accessible from this Document Foundation
web page.

https://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/community-support/

For those requiring direct or non-public support, direct email and paid
commercial support is certainly available.

Post back if you need specifics.

I have no idea if it's like MS Office 2016. I never used it. But it is open
source and it is not proprietary so it is certainly better :)

Obviously this is not useful for everybody. An online office suite like
open365 doesn't make sense for personal use in places where access to the
internet is limited. But maybe for an ONG with several PCs connected to an
intranet it is worth considering...

The idea is to have the office installed in your own server so that all
users have the same stable version and don't have to worry if the software
is updated.
On the other hand if everybody in a organization is using LibreOffice then
there is really no reason to use MS file formats...

Maybe this is the beginning of a GOOD thing!

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: LibreOffice Online

2016-04-28 Thread Tim---Kracked_P_P---webmaster

There are many articles, which I have read over the years, where they
have issues of storing "personal" files and some do not like the use of
cloud systems unless it uses a heavy duty encryption system for the
whole process, including during the upload/download process over the Net.

To be honest, with all I have read, I do not "trust" Cloud services that
are not located in and administered by the business IT department.

The need for a "secured" WiFi access point is another drawback. I
rarely am able to find any WiFi access where I need to use my laptop, or
tablet, outside my home/office network. The only access I have outside
my apartment is my own WiFi network, when I place a secondary access
point so I can use it in the common area[s] 10 floors below it in living
room window.

Actually, with Ubuntu having a Cloud version, it might be easier to
setup your own Cloud service in your home/work environment so can
"trust" the service.

is that if you don't have internet connection you can still use the offline

I believe your antivirus is being overcautious about a program that is

Thanks
I just tried Breeze and I really do not like it at all. Oxygen and
Tango are OK, but not the others in the list. The desktop icons for
Breeze looks better, in the images I have seen online. It would have
been nice if the internal Breeze icon set, shown in LO, were a good.

I wonder why Ubuntu 16.04LTS has opted to use that icon set for LO's
default instead of ones that look better - and in color. They have
color for the desktop icon set, but no color for the window's icons.

I still have one system running Ubuntu 14.04LTS with MATE desktop, so it
would be nice to have 16.04/MATE on it. All of the rest of my systems
have 15.10/MATE installed, though I do have one Lubuntu 15.10 install on

[libreoffice-users] Re: LibreOffice defaults to the Breeze theme in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

2016-04-11 Thread V Stuart Foote
@Tim,

Its not a theme, rather an icon style.

Should be present on your existing 5.1.1.3 installation.

Tools -> LibreOffice -> View: "Icon style" drop down list

select "Breeze" entry. No need to restart, should apply immediately.

Open Computing Language (OpenCL) is a framework for writing programs
that execute across heterogeneous platforms consisting of central
processing units (CPUs), graphics processing units (GPUs), digital
signal processors (DSPs), field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and
other processors or hardware accelerators.
If OpenCL is active on both, suggest that you are using two differing
GPU and/or CPU drivers. One working correctly and the other not.

should disable that.

Make sure your LO is running well with someother file. In Tools > Options

Load/Save you will find the item "Load user-specific settings with the

In Tools > Options > LibreOffice > View you can disable OpenGL.

Restart LO to activate the changes.

Now try again to load a problematic file.

Hi,

Have you tried a *System Restore* -- choosing a *Restore Point* date prior
to the occurrence of the *LibreOffice* problem? This procedure would
likely cause *subsequently-installed programs to malfunction* and they
would have to be reinstalled. But the *Windows'* *System Restore* has an
*"Undo"* feature should it *not help*.

Take care.

There might be a problem with the configuration file on one machine. If
so, just delete it and LO will make a standard new one and open your

[libreoffice-users] RE: LibreOffice 5.1.1.3 Writer new bug?

2016-03-04 Thread V Stuart Foote
LibreOffice 5.1.1 (aka 5.1.1.3 is in pre-release) posting soon. So, probably
not a typo.

Believe this is simply an Auto-correct issue in profile, but easy to
determine if it is from LO Source or a user profile.

Auto-correct values are localized so there could be an issue with the
replacement table, or possibly a word completion has been recorded. Both
are checked from the Tools -> AutoCorrect -> AutoCorrect Options dialog (as
localized).

If correct, the U+2129 right arrow character is linked, i.e. auto replaces
entry of "-->" ; but the replacement for that string can be edited from the
"Replace" tab. Check what is recorded there and correct it if wrong.

Alternatively, the "Word Completion" tab allows words frequently used to be
auto entered. Default limit of 8 characters, but that can be reduced and
user profile may have shorter completions recorded. Check there if the "->
semplificazione" has somehow been recorded--and delete it.

Of course, probably the simplest way to reset to defaults is to clear user
profile.

I suggest that you try 5.1.1.1 before reporting the bug , maybe it's already
fixed (some of the problems I had with 5.1.0.3 were)

Interesting article. Unfortunately Jack Wallen is not aware (or deliberately
ignores) that 5.1.0 is the .0 release in a new branch. Even if it has new
features (because it is a new branch...) it is still very raw and it should
not be recommended for general use.
So 5.1 is not a .1 fix over 5.0. It is a new branch with new features (and
new bugs and regressions). Branch 5.1 should be usable around 5.1.3 (just
like 5.0.5 is an excellent version)

A good example is Open Remote File. It is an excellent improvement. Except
that because this is a .0 release it fails to work on some systems/OSes
(search bugzilla to see what I mean).

Another example is OpenGL. In branch 5.1 OpenGL is set to ON by default.
Unfortunately OpenGL is currently not a good experience (at least in my
experience with several machines ranging from Windows XP to 10). The menus
are blurry and slow, which is particularly noticeable on older/slower
systems.

So, yes branch 5.1 has great things but don't make such a fuss about a .0
(again, it is 5.1.0) release.

Just my 2 cents...

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: LibreOffice Base and MySQL

2016-01-30 Thread Hank Alper
Hi Ian,
If you are importing a spreadsheet into your MySql Database, you should be
able to do this without using Base.
Alexander feels it may be that we are using different versions of
phpMyAdmin. He may be right..
Two years ago I imported my Base database tables to a MySQL Database
running on a remote, headless Centos 6 VPS server. I installed phpMyAdmin
on that server and it is visible
via my browser. Here are the versions of the software I'm running on the
*remote* Centos 6 server:

Database server
Server: Localhost via UNIX socket
Software: MySQL
Software version: 5.1.69 - Source distribution
Protocol version: 10
User: MyUserName@localhost
Server charset: UTF-8 Unicode (utf8)
phpMyAdmin
Version information: 3.5.8.2, latest stable version: 4.5.4.1
Note:
Because my server software is on a remote Linux machine, I view phpMyAdmin
via my home computer's
browser. Here is the Web server on that same remote machine:
Web server
Apache/2.2.15 (CentOS)
Database client version: libmysql - 5.1.69
PHP extension: mysqli Documentation
Spreadsheet
On my home computer, I'm running Libre Office 5
I suggest you check the versions of your software against mine.

*Have you established a named database in MySQL into which you are
importing this spreadsheet ?* You know of course, you must do this before
you import anything into it.
I would suggest you prepare a small spreadsheet in Calc with perhaps 3 rows
and three named columns with test data..Keep the data simple, Use integers,
decimals and short strings.
Save the file as a standard Calc file. *Forget CSV.* Open phpMyAdmin and
select the named database you're working on. Click on the Import tab. Enter
the path to the Calc file.or browse to its location.
Select 'Open Document Spreadsheet' from the drop down box.
The input screen will show a check box asking if you want the first row as
headers.Check that box.
Everything should be ready for you to press* GO.*

Hope this helps.
Hank

ODF files are compressed archives of XML files (that's why they, like
MSOOXML, are not the best containers for larger data, but this is off
topic). I guess you're getting the error because the web server handling
the Admin isn't fully set up. The devil is in the detail...

Hank's suggestion looks good -- apps supporting ODS would be much better
than underspecified CSV, so such

phpMyAdmin's import may work. However there's possible issue that such
tools need to be supplied with _range information_ of data that has to be
imported from ODS.
In absence of such, the only is guessing or heuristics, like we have in
Kexi's ODS->Table importer, by the way. If there are more possible ranges,
manual intervention may be needed, such as moving data to a simpler,
separate sheet, and that would degrade the whole automation. Sure, for
one-time import this isn't a big deal.

I am writing this to note that we sometimes lack specialized but popular
standards for exchanging data or schema.

The "rub" in this useful solution is that it does indeed depend on the
version of phpmyadmin supplied with your distro.

Ian is using PCLinuxOS or PCLOS, and judging from his reply to you, it
would appear that the version supplied with that distro doesn't have the
import from ODS functionality.

Open the spreadsheet document. Ensure that your data are organized as a
normalized list where numbers are numbers, dates are dates and times are
times. Quite often and for no reason, Excel sheets are poisoned with
text data which makes them rather useless. If you can not distinguish
the data types in a spreadsheet, there is no hope anyway.

Copy the normalized list of valid data including any header row.
In the Base document which is connected to your MySQLDB click the _icon_
of a target table where you want to append the spreadsheet data and paste.
A wizard pops up where you can map the fields of the clipboard data to
the fields of your database table.

This may raise 3 types of errors:
-- referencial integrity errors
-- not nullable errors
-- wrong data type errors
Each of these error types can be answered with "Cancel" or "Ignore". The
ignore option will try to import as much as possible without raising the
same error again.

Some helpful spreadsheet formulas to test spreadsheet data for consisteency:

> =MAX(LEN(column))[Ctrl+Shift+Enter] returns the max. length of a text column.
> =COUNTBLANK(column) counts blanks.
> =COUNTA(column) counts any values
> =COUNT(column) counts numbers
> =COUNTA(column)=COUNT(column) TRUE if there are only numbers.

> table's column (test referencial integrity).
> =COUNTIF(value;same_column)>1 returns TRUE if there are duplicates in the

=MATCH(value ; other_list ; 0) tests referencial integrity against
another table.

That data ended up in that fashion because I was trying to create a
simple list of file names of files located on a flash drive and the
only way I recall doing that in Windows XP - now 7 - is to use the DOS

I was just trying to generate a list of file names alphabetically by
artist/file name for each .mp3 but Windows doesn't seem to do that

[libreoffice-users] Re: LibreOffice Base and MySQL

2016-01-20 Thread Andreas Säger
When using HSQL (which is less powerful than MySQL) command CREATE TEXT
TABLE "Foo"(...) prepares a table "Foo" with fields and indices just
like a regular data table. A second command SET TABLE "Foo"... links the
text table "Foo" to a particular text file.
If the linked text table and the underlying csv and the target table
share the same structure with same data types in same order of columns,
I can simply drag the text table icon over the icon of the regular data
table and confirmt the import dialog without further adjustments.
If this precondition is not met or when data type conversions are needed
(e.g. text with German comma decimals and D.M.Y dates) then I create a
view to return all fields with the right types in right order and drag
the view over the data table. HSQL only accepts text data with point
decimals and ISO date/times.
With the right setup it is just a simple drag operation with no
spreadsheet involved. The setup is development work because it requires
understanding simple data types. Same problem with csv to spreadsheet
imports which will fail in most cases when you ignore the import options
because you don't understand them.

[libreoffice-users] Re: LibreOffice Base and MySQL

2016-01-20 Thread Andreas Säger
How can anybody solve any csv related problem without knowing anything about
the actual content?

4 different lines of perfectly valid and commonly used csv data:

1234.98;2014-12-22
1.234,98;22 Dez 2014
1234.98;12/22/14
1234.98;22/12/14

Each line carries the exact same information. I could add a thousand more
different lines with the exact same values without leaving the conventions
of valid csv.

Database admins don't use spreadsheets. MySQL can do this very well. Of
course, csv is not a file format. It is mere convention with millions of
different flavours.

Ian,

I would suggest opening up your Calc created CSV in a normal text
editor, to see what it "really" looks like. Only in this way will you be
able to choose the right options to import the data into mysql.

As Andreas has rightly said, you don't actually need a graphical tool to
import CSV files into mysql - the official mysql technical
documentation, if you care to read it, is really quite good in this
respect :

http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.7/en/load-data.html

Also, this tutorial gives some very handy examples of how to import CSV
files into mysql :

http://www.mysqltutorial.org/import-csv-file-mysql-table/

The error messages you are seeing seem to indicate that the data you are
trying to input doesn't correspond to the definition of that data which
is set in the database.

For what it's worth, I had downloaded the "fresh" branch a few weeks
ago. I think it was version 5.0.3 (or 4). I experienced daily crashes
with it. I got so frustrated that I completely uninstalled it and went
back to the trusty "still" version. My current plan is to not go near
version 5 until I find that version 4 fails to complete my work.

I would recommend that the download cite default to the "still" branch.
If I had been a complete noob and had this experience with the default
"fresh" branch, I'd be looking for a different solution altogether.

Virgil;
What system are you using that gives you the daily crashes?

I agree with Tom that soon the current 5.0.x line will be turned into
the "still" version line. I am running both 4.x.x and 5.0.x between my
different dual booting Win10 partitions and my Ubuntu 14.xx/15.xx
partitions and single OS systems.

I have not experienced any crashing, except for some very large and
complex files. Maybe I do not use my LO version[s] as much as you do,
but I am not getting your type of crashing.

So it could be something in your system that may not like LO, or it may
just be that there is a corruption in the config files. If I remember
correctly, 4.x and 5.x use different config file folders.

Yes, I still recommend 4.x to people, but since that like is coming to
its end, I will have to decide if 5.0.x is ready "enough" for me to
point clients and family to it.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: LibreOffice Download

2016-01-04 Thread Virgil Arrington

Tim,

I'm using Ubuntu 14.04 LTS with the Unity DE. I honestly don't recall
the actual things I was doing when it crashed, other than I was using
Writer (which I use 95% of the time). If I recall, it happened a lot
when I had multiple files open, and it nearly always happened when I
tried to open an ".odt" file directly from "Files," the Ubuntu file
manager, rather than going through the LO "Open File" dialogs.

Before uninstalling, I did some online searching and found many others
who were experiencing frequent crashing with 5.0.x. I just figured it
wasn't yet ready for prime time.

As for config files, when I installed 5.0.x, it recognized my custom
settings and templates from 4.4.x, so it must have imported at least
some of them.

At any rate, I'm generally happy with 4.4.7.2.

There are basic libraries installed with LibreOffice, so I see no reason
why it could not be used. Of course some details may be hard to solve .. ;)

You will get wrong matches or wrong #N/A errors if the "regular
expressions" option is ON and your search expressions contain certain
characters. With your own example
> CONTO TRANSITORIO PAGHE LL.DD.

will match any characters at the positions where the points are

You may get wrong positive matches when the "match whole cells" option
is OFF.
Search expression CONTO TRANSITORIO PAGHE will match at CONTO
TRANSITORIO PAGHE LL.DD.

Regular expression = OFF
Match whole cell = ON

You leave out the 4th argument which means it defaults to 1. You want 0.
VLOOKUP(x;range;2;0)

I lost the use of my favorite theme[s] with the new "theme box

Currently there is no way to select a specific theme. Unless you are
fortunate that the theme you like is within the first 9 that come out in
whatever search you do, you are out of luck.

Curiously, searching for "Dandelion Seeds" in the Mozilla Add-Ons, Themes
page immediately returns the theme you are looking for in first place, so I
have no idea which search engine or criteria the LibreOffice dialog is
using...

That is a know Regression and was reported some time ago

Unfortunately none of the devs working on LibreOffice found that this is an
interesting bug to fix...

Maybe someone knows a workaround?

2015-11-16 Thread Peter Maunder
I was pleased to see this interest in using Firefox and Thunderbird Personas
with LibreOffice. My wife and I use personas that I have created and stored
on our computers all the time. I don't normally download them from the
internet. There are several bug reports that may be or general interest.

85549 Personas lost upgrading from 4.3 to 4.4 . You should be aware that
the folders changed when upgrading from 4.3 to 4.4 or 5.x. Each personas is
now in a separate folder for example /gallery/personas/personas name. So
any change made for 4.3 must be upgraded for use in 4.4/5.x.

86544 Personalization: New browser for Firefox themes improvements.
Discusses some improvements.

93599 Personalization and themes. Further discussion.

I use the Firefox Personas Plus addon to test Personas created and stored on
my system before loading them onto LibO. I wish that LibreOffice had the
same function.

I experienced the same issue as yours, will comment the bug. However, this
version is the first alpha of a new branch, so bugs are more than expected
and that's why we test them so early. Marcus has spent time to develop that
filter and I'm sure all what he wants is that it works. So please let him

seen a developer breaking things by purpose :-)

Hi :)
For now probably best to go back to the "Still" branch rather than the
newer "Fresh" branch. So that'll be 4.something.something.

Are you using Ubuntu or an "Ubuntu clone" such as Mint? (i've never
thought it very fair to call such distros "clones" as they often feature
tons of extras to suit some other need and Mint is definitely fully fledged
even though it can still use the good stuff from Ubuntu).

If you are on Windows then we might need to try something else to find a
way around the problem.

Regards from
Tom :)

Errr, obviously try Andreas' way first! On Linux, such as Ubuntu, you can
"kill" the background processes quite easily. Normally we try some other
way to stop them but Andreas' command is really elegant imo.

You should check if the problem is in LibreOffice itself or in its
integration in KDE. To do that, you could create a new Ubuntu session
with Unity or Gnome window manager, and try in this new session.

Best regards.

Or maybe it's file-dependent.

As a work-around, I just took screenshots from MS PowerPoint Viewer.

Didn't know that feature. I'll keep it handy for the next time.

Thank you.

2015-09-17 Thread kropotkin
Thanks for this, Jorge, but unfortunately it doesn't work. To be clear,
when I said:

"I have tried all the usual advice about slowness with Libreoffice,
viz. changing the memory settings"

I meant that I had tried just what you suggest (and decreasing the undo
steps, and so on).

Oh well. Will have to find an alternative. LO is unusable for what I
need as things stand.

2015-09-16 Thread V Stuart Foote

Not from a multiple slide presentation, however:

- you can print a single slide to file (as noted)
- you can select all object(s) on the slide and export them to any format
(but you'll lose other slide template details),
- you can simply copy the slide and paste into a new Impress presentation.

With copy/paste (rather than export you seek) most slide formatting will
come across in the paste, and once in a single slide--reformat/clean and
export to file format needed.

Thanks guys. Copy/paste into Paintshop Pro did the trick, although it'd make
sense to have that option in the pop-up menu when right-clicking on a given
slide.

2015-09-16 Thread Gilles
As a work-around, I installed MS' free PowerPoint Viewer, and copy/pasted
screenshots into (again) Paintshop Pro because PPV's "Copy slide" function
doesn't copy screenshots in a format that PSP couldn't understand.

Still, I wish Impress could read PowerPoint animated slides, at least show
the final output.

Glad you got it sorted, but why into Paintshop Pro. Would make more sense
from LO projects perspective to copy/paste with our internal formats into
Draw--and export graphics from there.

So perhaps enhancements to Impress Slide sorter/preview frame adding:

a .uno: action to "Copy slide to new Impress presentation"

and

a .uno: action to "Copy slide to new Draw page"

Because I'm used to it :-/

But yes, it'd make more sense to paste it into LO's alternative.
