Good morning,
Firstly my experience. Early this month I purchased an Apple IMac from a
company OURDEAL. The purchase came with a free copy of your OPENOFFICE
software. This package could not be loaded giving the error message “Open
Office cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified. Mac OS cannot
verify that this APP is free from Malware”
I contacted OurDeal who advise me to contact yourselves. This I did and prior’s
to giving my problems was invited to pay one pound to access your help desk.
After detailing the above problem I was left hanging for 15 minutes so I closed
the call.
Today Find that you have taken 40 pounds from my bank account. WHY?
I find that I cannot re access your system giving my Email details and password
I entered at the time. I have contacted my bank and their FRAUD office is
investigating the issue.
I am a 76 yr old guy with very little IT knowledge so I ask you Please as a
gesture of honesty to refund this money to my bank asap and to ensure no
further payments are deducted from my bank account. I understand that my banks
Fraud dept will be in contact with you regarding this matter.
Meanwhile I look forward to hearing from you without any further delay,
Yours faithfully,

Good idea!

Here's an attachment ods file with the resultant PDF I created via Export to
PDF feature. The issue is with the following tabs:
- "BILAGA II" (numbering erroneously indicates 5 when it should be 4)
- "BILAGA III" (numbering erroneously indicates 4 when it should be 3)
- "BILAGA X" (page number starts at 2 and number of pages indicates 8 when it
should be starting at 1 and up to page 7)
Can you reproduce this issue if you open the ODS file and do a PDF export?

Dear OpenOffice Support,

I have a OpenCalc file that contains several tabs that when I export as PDF
(landscape A4) some of the page numbers (done seperately per tab) are
incorrect in the resulting PDF. For example, one the exported tabs skips
page 1 and starts at page 2. Another tab has correct page numbering but the
total number of pages in that tab is incorrect (i.e. displays 1 of 8, 2 of
8, etc. when it should be 1 of 7, 2 of 7).

Due to the confidential nature of the data, I will not attach the OpenCalc

Try a free program called FoxIt Reader. If I remember correctly you can take a
pdf and save it as a word document. After it's in Word format, you can save it
as odt.

There is perhaps a way to do this, but it's probably for Linux only. And even
so, if you can do it, it probably won't be quite what you want (that is,

It's possible to extract the text from a pdf. The Linux tool is called
pdftotext, and there are probably applications like it for Windoze and the
rotten Apple, but again, they only extract text.

If I were faced with this problem, I would try copying the text from the pdf,
if your pdf reader will allow it. (Again, I am running Linux, so this usually
isn't a problem.) Then I would paste the text into a blank odt document, one
paragraph at a time. Or -- if the document isn't too long -- I would print
out the pdf, or open it in your pdf reader, then type it in by hand.

I know this probably isn't the solution you want, but there really aren't many
other solutions. A pdf document is essentially a photograph of a text
document. The actual text in the document is now only a picture of each page.

Good luck!

I assume that by 'totally distorted' Yvonne meant that the text was present but

introduce errors in the text itself.

possible that you've pressed the Insert key on your keyboard? That changes you

Re: How to Make a Background Fit?

2023-08-19 Thread W. Robert J. Funnell, Prof.
Linda -

When you were 'playing with the backgrounds', did you try adjusting the page
margins to make the image cover the entire page? Or did you use the real
'Background' feature that ignores the page margins for the image but should
leave them unchanged for any text you add to the page?

In an earlier message you referred to images being opened in Draw rather than
in Writer. It wasn't clear how you were opening the image. For use in Writer,
you should not open the image using File > Open, but rather use Insert > Image,
or Format > Page Style > Image.

In an earlier message you also referred to getting '3 or 4 images in one' in
Writer. That sounds like the tiling behaviour when an image is used as a true
background: if the image is smaller than the page, Writer will make additional
copies of it to fill the page, like tiles on a floor.

Maybe you'd already figured those things out but I wasn't sure.

First, Ian you're not a dumbo. If you haven't closed your document, try Ctrl +
Z which is an undo command. You may also open the document and you will see a
size of font drop down, you can do a Ctrl + A which is for "select all" on your

Robert,

Thank you. That helped a lot. I had looked in Roaming and didn't see it,
but maybe because it was all white. My File Manager is dark background.

I have renamed OpenOffice to OpenOffice.old and opened it, and it didn't
crash. I didn't have many settings, so I'm not going to stress over it.
I'll have to find the files I had open, but that's another issue.

Thank you for providing me with information relevant to Open Office. I love
to be able to ask questions and get information from this terrific,
supportive, mail list.

Writing '%AppData%' is meant to be instead of specifying

I think that 'OO Software > OO ShutUp10' is related to 'O ShutUp10', some

Open Office crashes immediately after it loads the pages.
I'm not 100% positive that this is only an Open Office problem. I'm running
Windows 10 and this is Open Office 4.1.13.

My desktop computer was refusing to load the Start menu, so I rebooted it.
It froze and didn't do anything for about 45 minutes. I hit the power
button and restarted it again. It restarted and ran updates. My friends
advised me to run a check and fix program. SFC whic is System File Checker
> sfc /scannow. It came up with a list of things that were wrong, but it
said it fixed everything. Then, when I tried to start Open Office, it
loaded fine and opened the pages and then crashed! It's done it over and
over.

I've heard two possiblities. One is a hardware problem, but the computer
seems fine and is running on an SSD.

The other is resetting the Open Office User profile. I had problems with
that. I don't think my computer matches the description in the directions.
Or maybe I just can't see it. (I'm a little bit visually impaired.) I
couldn't make this work:

https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=74=99158
"Make sure you include the percent signs before and after.
%AppData%"

Isn't AppData the same in > This PC > Local Disk(C:) > Users > MyUser >
AppData > Local .. In Local, I have: OO Software > OO ShutUp10

I really do need OpenOffice for some important documents.

Help please?

Re: Deleting presentation

2023-06-21 Thread W. Robert J. Funnell, Prof.
Frank -

Are you talking about deleting the file for the presentation, or deleting all
of the slides within the presentation but keeping the file intact?

For the latter, I see in LibreOffice that if I select all of the slides then
(oddly) the Delete Slide menu item disappears. Is that what you're seeing? I
found that if I unselect even one of the slides, then Delete Slide reappears.
Or if I select, say, slides 2 to the end, then Delete Slide is still there. So
I can delete all but one of the slides and then delete the remaining slide
separately.

Does that help?

My first thought is that in the past you were scanning your documents with
optical character recognition (OCR) turned on, and that now it's turned off for
some reason.

With OCR turned on, the PDF file contains the actual text and also an image of
the page. With OCR turned off, the PDF file contains only the image.

Hi,
My name is David Di Giacomo and I have been an Apache Open Office user
for many years and have never encountered any problems with it. I think it is a
great program. However in the last 2-3 weeks I have encountered a problem, it
will not allow me to edit imported PDF documents.
I will explain what process I have always used in order to implement Open
Office,
1.) I scan a required document on my HP printer and send it to my computer as a
PDF file.
2.)I then open the scanned document, highlight it and then press control/C to
copy this document.
3.) I then open Open Office and click on Text Documents, when the Open Office
blank pages appears I then press control/V to paste this document. I have
always used this method and never have had any issues.
This is where my problem begins, when the importation to Open Office has been
completed, the document does appear but is imported with small squares on each
corner and middle outer edges. I then click my cursor outside the document and
the squares disappear but as soon as I go back into the body of the document a
cross hair symbol appears which allows me to relocate the document but will not
allow me to edit any of the text.
Telstra has downloaded all extensions but unfortunately it still did not work.
I really would appreciate if you can assist me with this problem for as I said
before I really like using this program.
If you can't fix this problem could you please suggest an alternative program.
  Best Regards
David Di Giacomo

Re: Hi, I'm wondering about ODF in comparison to DOCX

2023-02-16 Thread W. Robert J. Funnell, Prof.
Nikhil -

Microsoft have done their best to make it impossible for others to create .docx
files.

Apache OpenOffice can save files in the older .doc format. LibreOffice
(www.libreoffice.org) can save files in the .docx format, but the process isn't
perfect. It usually works fine for simple documents.

If you save your files as .odt or .doc, users of MS Word will be able to open
them.

The reason I installed OpenOffice is because my dad recommended it when I
was facing an issue with the copy of MS Office that we had. It is quite an
annoyance however that the DOCX files when opened with OpenWriter have to
be converted to ODF inorder to be saved. We typically use Windows and MS
Office is just shipped with it usually. I want to guess that this is also
an online compatible filetype as GMail and Whatsapp are able to open it.
However, I have not had the chance to test ODF and would like to know why
the software forces this conversion and ontop of that states there will be
loss of something when saving in this format.

In Debian (and presumably also in Ubuntu) there is the 'recoll' application,

One of the things you can do that is extremely helpful for finding
things in writings

is to put a word in search in microsoft word in your calling up you

So you can find something you've written but can't find which article it

So I can click on documents in Word, and there is a search option in

But on using Ubuntu i cannot do that in open office. Is there anyway
you can change that?

Re: Letter template

2023-02-08 Thread W. Robert J. Funnell, Prof.
Frank -

One way to solve your problem is to position the cursor just above the
e-mail-address frame and press Enter once or twice, and then select the
telephone-number frame and use the up-arrow key to move it back up where you
want it. You should now be able to click below the frames to enter text.

Doing View > Formatting Marks may make it easier to see what's going on.

Re: Question about embedding fonts in Open Office

2023-02-06 Thread W. Robert J. Funnell, Prof.
Caroline -

I'm not aware of a way to prevent a font from being embedded in an exported PDF
file, but from what I've read it seems that fonts won't be embedded if the font
licence doesn't allow it. Assuming that you know which of your fonts have
restrictive licences, have you tried exporting a document with such a font and
then checking in your PDF reader whether the fonts are embedded?

I don't know about embedded fonts in RTF files.

Hi, thanks for all you do!

I just have a question about Open Office.

I want to share an rtf written file, and I know I mustn’t embed fonts
unless I am sure they are ok to embed. Are fonts automatically embedded on
an RTF file or is this not an issue?

Also, if I export a document to be a PDF, do the fonts have to be embedded
or is there a way I can prevent them from being embedded?

I basically want to share a file, ideally as a PDF, without embedding any
fonts that aren’t licensed to be embedded.

Thanks so much!

Re: Reveal Codes

2022-03-22 Thread W. Robert J. Funnell, Prof.
Andrew -

I would like to take you up on your kind offer to send a copy of your
RevealCodes3.odt. If you don't mind, I could add it to my notes about
RevealCodes at http://audilab.bme.mcgill.ca/~funnell/swil_ooo.html#reveal;
otherwise I would just keep it to play with when I have a chance. One of my
planned projects for when I retire is to implement RevealCodes for LO/AOO :-)

I just checked the handling of direct formatting. If I bold some text directly,
it creates an 'automatic style' with an ad-hoc name, in my case 'T6':

You're right that it tells you when a style (whether 'automatic' or not) starts
and ends. For example,

Subject: Re: Reveal Codes

First, to identify a few problems with "reveal codes.

One problem with "reveal" codes with respect to OpenOffice is related to the
use of styles compared to hard coded attributes. I perform most formatting
using a style, but it is difficult to understand whether a single character is
bold because it was made that way using a style or by a hard coded attribute.

Programatically, it is easy to traverse simple text and to recognize where
things change. The hard part is understanding exactly why something changed. I
do not remember off hand if it tells me when individual attributes change if
the change is because of an applied style. Also from memory, I think that it
will tell me when a style starts / ends, which makes removing an applied style
tricky; something I have never tried programatically.

I have certainly written macros that would dump this information, but not in a
nice easy to see way.

https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/FAQ/Writer/FormattingText/Does_OpenOffice.org_have_a_Reveal_Codes_functionality_similar_to_WordPerfect%3F

https://bz.apache.org/ooo/show_bug.cgi?id=3395

https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7=62137

https://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/User:TJFrazier/Reveal_Codes

In 2004 (approximately), a macro was created by Ian Laurenson to roughly
emulate some reveal codes functionality.

On my current computer I have LibreOffice (not OpenOffice) installed and I was
able to make it work with a few fixes. No idea if it works with the current
version of AOO (Apache OpenOffice). If you email me off list, and ask for a
copy of my latest Documents/OpenOffice/RevealCodes/Ianz/RevealCodes3.odt, I can
send you a copy. You will probably be very unhappy with how it works. Also, it
is not something that I use. I considered extending it, but there is always a
question of available time.

Reveal Codes was a Wordperfect feature. The Word feature of the same name

nothing like the Wordperfect feature because the structure of the files is
different.

If you have a line (or double line, or dashed line, or etc) across a page,
check for borders in the paragraph style both above the line and below the
line. I've had that happen to me before and frustrated the heck out of me
before I finally figured it out. Still happens sometimes. Don't know what
I'm doing to make it happen but have at least figured out how to get rid of
it.

Subject lines on e-mail messages make it much easier to manage the

It's easy to turn off the capitalization that you don't like. It's
also easy to find the answer yourself by doing a simple Web search.

Maybe someone less offended than I by the wording of your message will

Is there any more substance to the claim about malware in LO than
there is to the claim about OO going away? I doubt it.

Maybe your style has the language set incorrectly? What happens if you
do Paste Special and paste the text as Unformatted? Are the errors
flagged then?

Andrew, I'm curious about why you don't use the Insert > Caption

I also suspect not. My approach for a somewhat similar situation is to
define two styles (say 'text-indent-first' and
'text-indent-subsequent') and in the style-definition dialogue set the
'Next style' to the second style for both of them.

Have you tried right-clicking on the file? When you do that, does a
menu pop up which includes 'Open with'? If you click on that you
should be able to select OpenOffice as the application to open your
file with. You should also be able to check a box so that OpenOffice
is used by default to open your file in the future.

Whether the previous download is continued might depend on how you're
doing your downloads, but I think it probably won't be continued. It
probably doesn't matter whether you delete the file you got the first
time or not.

I don't know what 'box' you're referring to. Are you downloading from
the official site, http://www.openoffice.org/download/ ?
The file size is specified there (for Windows) as being 134 MBytes.

The time required for the download will depend a lot on what kind of
network connection you have.

Does the downloaded file have a length of 134 MBytes, as specified on
the download page? Have you tried downloading the file a second time,
in case the first download failed for some reason?

What is it capitalizing? Things after a period? If that's the problem,
go to Tools > AutoCorrect > AutoCorrect Options and look in the
Options tab for 'Capitalize first letter of every sentence'. If it's
checked, you probably want to uncheck it.

In the View menu, do you have Field Names enabled? That causes the
name of the field (e.g., 'Page numbers') to be displayed instead of
the value of the field (e.g., '1').
