Aber jeder, wie er mag. Es ist halt für Windows (10/11) Benutzer der
einfachste Weg.

zeigt mir zwar OpenOffice an, der Button zum Downloaden ist aber inaktiv.
Wahrscheinlich weil ich von einem Linux-Rechner aus die Site besuche. Was
ist das für eine willkürliche Einschränkung.

Oh, and here's how you might have achieved this. Did your extra 
couple of words perhaps start with a capital "A"? Your typing finger 
may have slipped slightly, so that instead of Shift+A you actually 
typed Ctrl+A (easily done). This is the keyboard shortcut for Select 
All (otherwise Edit | Select All), and this would have selected all 
the existing material before immediately replacing it with what you 
continued to type.

What almost certainly happened is that you somehow managed to select 
(highlight) all of the existing text before you looked down to type 
the extra words. If you have any part of your text selected when you 
type, what you type simply replaces the selected material - in this 
case, all of your text. That is not a bug, but instead the way all 
such applications work.

There is a simple way: just use Edit | Undo: Typing (or Ctrl+Z) to 
undo those two words and recover your previous text. But it may be 
too late to do this if you have performed other actions in your 
attempt to recover the earlier material. If you had typed more than a 
couple of words you might want to copy that first, before undoing the 
typing, so that you could then paste the additional text back where 
it should have been.



is there a problem with the new up grade ?


No - at least, not as simple a bug as your description would suggest!

Hello  I download  successfully 4-1-14  2 days ago I have opened a text 
document today  and  typed half a page of text . I looked down to write 
a couple  more words ,looked back at my screen to see only the last two 
words I had typed the rest of the text had disappeared and I have tried 
to restore the missing text with out success  is there a problem with 
the new up grade ?

Iain,

Had the same issue with the last two updates of OpenOffice on Windows. It 
resolved itself after either starting and closing AOO or after rebooting 
Windows or after doing both, I don’t remember which resolved it.

What you have actually done is not to have updated your installed
edition of Apache OpenOffice, but you have downloaded and installed a
very closely related program called LibreOffice.

page. I contacted Dell Technical to try to resolve this but they could not
get this symbol back. They checked social media  which I dio not use and

For no apparent reason Office 4 is requesting me to do a spell check on ALL 
documents I open.

Every word is checked. This has never happened before.

The user's problem is corruption of the

millions of other users. There must be something 
wrong with how you upgrade. I'm guessing, but is 
the problem that you have the Quickstarter 
running whilst you attempt to upgrade?

Was meint "Excel-Dateien"? Sind wirklich "alle" diese Dateien gesperrt? Sind 
andere, OO zugeordnete, Dateien/Dateitypen einheitlich nicht gesperrt? Wie 
lautet die erscheinende Meldung?

Zu ermuten wäre zunächst das die ganz normale Sperre durch bestehende 
.~lock...-Dateien besteht, nur kann diese Sperre naturgemäß nicht "alle" 
Dateien betreffen, sondern nur Dateien, die vor dem Update von einer (z.B.) 3er 
Version von OO auf die 4er Version nicht richtig geschlossen wurden.

This has been a recurring issue in the forum as well. I can't believe 
that all these users do mishandle their computer.

already know. LibreOffice has learned how to avoid this. Since these 
two office programs are very similar, I would think that the solution 
would be to apply the same solution.

should not give users generally the untrue idea that "the spell 
checker doesn't work". Meanwhile we should encourage them into the 
good practice that avoids it anyway.

Just because LO fixed it does not mean that AOO can apply that patch. In
general LO is duel licensed under Mozilla Public License v2 and the GNU
Lesser GPL v3+ licenses which are incompatible with the Apache License
version 2.0 (ALV2) and cannot be used unless the developer also
licensees it under the ALV2[1].

I agree with you. What I should have pointed out as to what the likely 
problem is that the user was having which I did not. Instead I assumed 
that everyone would know what has been obvious on so many computers 
running OOo: the configuration folder has become corrupt. It has become 
a reflex action.

It is NOT true that antivirus software will detect and remove ALL viruses.

If you have access to another computer that does NOT have openoffice, 
install it on that computer and run it there to see if the behaviour is 
the same.

Assuming you want the recipient to have an email with your document file 
attached, use the following steps:

 1. Save the study document to your file system.

 2. When you open Windows Live Mail and address a new message to be sent, 
attach the document.  (This might be an Insert option depending on your 
version.) Then send the message.

Alternative: If you have the Windows PC desktop application for Windows Live 
Mail, see if you can set it as your default email application.  Then the Send 
to Email from Apache OpenOffice 4 might work.  If it doesn't, use the above 
procedure.

First off, I always save my documents in word sot that people opening them 
won't have any problems. You could also export them as pdfs by the way. I don't 
use that e-mail server. I prefer yahoo and gmail for they present fewer 
problems. But, in general, you shouldn't have problems attaching the document 
in question. Or, if you want to send what you have typed as part of your 
e-mail, select the words in question, copy, and then paste them to your e-mail 
normally as if you had typed it there on the e-mail itself. Hope this helps 
somewhat.

the spell checker on my Apache Open Office 4. I have no idea if it is

That also happened to me once not too long ago.  Is Ctrl Z the keyboard 
shortcut for Undo?  If so, I doubt it will work.  When it happened to 
me, I clicked on the Edit menu and instead of Undo, it said Can't Undo 
and it was greyed out.  I had to re-key the entire document.  
Fortunately, it hasn't happened again... yet.

Roy,

There is not enough information to be able to reproduce your difficulty and 
identify the particular problem.

Without knowing more, here are a number of things to try,

It may be that a Zoom or Scroll function moved your view so that the text was 
not visible.  

Open the document and look at the lower right corner of the OpenOffice Text 
window where there is a slider and a % value.  Move the slider to 100% and see 
if that helps.  You can also use Ctrl-Home to get to the top of the first page 
and see if the text is there.

Also check the lower left corner where it says Page m/n.  That should tell you 
how much material the document may have, assuming you typed more than a page's 
worth.

If you don't find your text that way, try going to the View menu and click the 
"Hidden Paragraphs" option.

And one more trick.  Positioned at the top of the document, click the "Edit > 
Select all" and see whether there is any portion of the document that is 
selected.  If you see text in the selection area, this may reveal that a font 
color has been changed.  You can use the font color button in the bar that has 
font and style information to change the font to a visible color different than 
the background color of the document.

If this does not recover what appears to be suddenly-missing text, the best 
workaround is to save your document regularly.  When something like this 
happens on a document that has previously been saved (so it has a file name), 
do not close or save the document.  Instead, use the File > Save As ... menu 
option to save the file under a new name so that you don't lose previously 
saved material while you see if you can recover your latest work.

Also, if the material is not private, you can create a bug report and add the 
failed document as an attachment.  That way, someone who understand the file 
format can examine your document to see if there is any way to tell what 
happened.  Let us know if you have captured a document that you want to do that 
with.

What disappeared? Only the text or the whole window? Or something else?

I assume you are running Apache OpenOffice Writer, as you say ”word
program”, which perhaps refers to MS Office Word. Writer is however not an
MS Word clone or anything like that.
It's also not ”our” program. I'm just a user like you, so this list is just
people using Apache OpenOffice, helping each other out; it's not like
professional support or something.
Just saying, in case you don't know.

OpenOffice or of the computer while OpenOffice is open, there may be such 
left-over processes.  If, after a crash, OpenOffice does not start up, you may 
need to repeat the TaskManager delete of soffice processes to enable it 
startup.  I strongly advise finding out why your computer crashes and fixing it.

Jim,

Thanks a lot! I have a cooler under the laptop, but it's not very
effective. I'll probably build one using real case fans and some wood. HP
also gives directions for cleaning the fans and remounting the cooler.
Would be nice to have a backup computer first.

In the meantime, I tried downloading Apache Open Office 4.1.2, from
http://sourceforge.net/projects/openofficeorg.mirror/?source=typ_redirect

It has failed to download twice. I speak English, didn't bother with the
language packs, just clicked download. Must be my lucky day/bad internet?

it gives me the Recovery screen, but it struggles to open things and
freezes. Then I've used Task Manager,  and tried to open it again, three
times now, and it's still locking up, with the white screen.

Got ideas?

2015-10-21 09:53:29 (Mi, 21 Okt 2015)) installed on Windows and "Load
OpenOffice during system start-up" is definitely still an option.

If the "Quickstarter" option is omitted during a "Custom" installation,
then the "Load OpenOffice during system start-up" does not appear in the
Memory settings. I haven't checked, but it might be that the "Standard"
installation does not include the "Quickstarter" component.

un/re install will possibly (probably) not work.  If you are using Windows, 
start TaskManager (Ctrl Shift Esc) and kill any "soffice" processes shown as 
running on TM's Processes tab.  Such processes can be left over if you close 
(powerdown) your computer too quickly after using OO, or if you have had a 
program or computer crash.

Problems opening Open Office 4

I have the above installed on my desktop PC running windows 8.1
It has been operating successfully for about four months and I have several 
files saved in both Writer and spreadsheet. 
Today I cannot get these file to open nor can I open the program to start new 
documents. I keep getting the message requires elevation

Microsoft started with the release of Vista. Navigate to the .EXE files. 
Right-Click the application and enable the Run as Administrator. You 
can also right click the shortcut and temporarily run the application

I don't know which database you are using, but the embedded database is 
not the best solution.
Reason is not the database but because it's inside the OpenOffice file 
you loose everything when your odb file get corrupted.
There are many free databases available I personally use MySQL not 
because it's the best but it's the one I'm familiar with.

I’m writing to you because since i’ve downloaded the latest version of 
openoffice(4) on my mac, every now and then, while working on my document, 
openoffice keep deleting them. I lost twice documents really important to me 
for this issue. It all happen while working on spreadsheet, the program seem to 
freeze ( everywhere i point the cursor, the window appear empty ) so basically, 
the toolbar looks like a grey bar with no options on it and the File/Edit/View 
etc.. bar is not available. When i try to close the document (prompting the 
system asking me if i want to save my work) the system says that is impossible 
to complete the operation because the file i’m working on it does not exist, 
forcing me to check the folder and realising that the actual document is 
disappeared. It is not in the bin or any other folder on my mac, it does appear 
on the history of recent opened document and on a recovering program but the 
file it says to be corrupted.

How can i fix this problem? I already set openoffice to make backup of my 
documents, but i don’t want one day to find out that even this option is no 
longer a choice.

The documents show as orange icons (if that is the right terminology) on
desktop or in my documents and when I try to open them a box comes up
headed Microsoft Office and says this program is unable to run because of
missing or corrupted files.   Contact your computer manufacturer

When using Open Office 3 before if I wanted to send an attached piece of
writing I had to change the file from Microsoft 95 to Microsoft 97/2000/XP
so that the recipient could read it.

Some have the Open Office icon next to them and open perfectly.

This seems to be some issues on the operating system side, as the
files aren't really associated with the correct program.

Since we don't have orange icons except for impress is hard to know
what kind of presumption is your operating system doing for you. I
suggest to do a screenshot of the icons and put them on
http://imgur.com or similar site, and paste the link back. However to
fix any file association on your OS please read this tutorial from
Microsoft.

Right click on one of these orange icons and select Open With from the 
popup menu. If OpenOffice is offered from the dropdown select that, otherwise 
go to the bottom of the popup window where there should be an offering of 
Select other program and navigate to /Programs /Files(x86) /OpenOffice and 
choose soffice.exe. There should also be a checkbox (or something) to Always 
use this program to open these files. Now the orange icons should open by 
double clicking on them.

Note that I'm not on a Windows machine, so cannot check exact wording or paths.

I'm informed by the User that she had to remake File Associations for MS files 
and reopen old documents for them to reappear in Recent Documents.  All is 
now well!

 
 Your documents are still on your computer. The new version of OpenOffice has 
 not opened any Recent Documents, so it doesn't list any. What you need to 
 do is open the documents by using /File /Open and navigating to the directory 
 in which they are stored. When you have opened and closed each of these, the 
 new version of OpenOffice will know to display their names in Recent 
 Documents/

Apache Open Office 4

Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren.
Ich benutze schon länger die Versionen von Open Office.
Jetzt die Version 4.1, nach Update.
Bisher war das jetzt aufgetretene Problem nicht vorhanden, erst nach dem 
letzten Update.

Wenn ich mit Open Office gearbeitet habe, in Tabellen oder ähnliches, ich die 
bearbeitet
Seite gespeichert und geschlossen habe, blieb die Seite an der Stelle stehen, 
wo der Courser stand
und hat beim wieder öffnen die Seite und die Zeile genau dort wieder angezeigt.
Das ist praktisch, wenn man mehrere Seiten in einem Programm hat.
Seit dem Update macht das Ding aber was es will. Soll heißen. Die Seite wird 
gespeichert, wie
früher auch, der Courser wird geparkt für die nächste Bearbeitung und die Seite 
geschlossen.
Mache ich die Seite wieder auf, steht der Courser oben links in der Ecke, die 
Seite ist nach links
verschoben und statt auf Seite 4 oder 5 geht die Seite 1 auf.
Das möchte ich nicht, ist mir zu blöd, immer wieder die zu bearbeitende Seite 
einstellen und
Courser an die zu bearbeitende Stelle setzen. Warum ist das jetzt so ? Welche 
Einstellung muss ich
wie ändern, damit die Seite wieder da geöffnet wird, wo ich sie geschlossen 
habe ? 
Unter Einstellungen habe ich bereits einiges durch, hatte aber keinen Erfolg.
Außerdem möchte ich die automatischen Updataufforderung deaktivieren, das 
nervt. Ich habe gerade
ein Update gemacht, werde aber trotzdem ständig aufgefordert, Updates zu 
machen. 
Wenn mir aber dauernd meine Einstellungen verändert werden, habe ich auch keine 
Lust mehr, Updates
durchzuführen.

Du mußt Benutzerdaten eintragen und in den Dokumenteigenschaften
Benutzerdaten verwenden markieren!

Updates:
Unter den Einstellungen lassen sich bei Online-Updates die Parameter
dazu nach Belieben ändern!

to a new colored venue is distracting and delays both the installation and the 
close of the program.  It is pretty but not useful.  Please change it back to

Please ensure that you are downloading only from 
www.openoffice.org (which redirects to Sourceforge). Out of the box 
OpenOffice4 looks very much as previous versions; if there are changes to the 
default screens these may be caused by whatever theme is set on your computer.

um. Ich verstehe Ihre Aufregung und auch, dass man, wenn etwas nicht 
klappt, erst einmal nach einem Schuldigen sucht.


Aber bitte bedenken Sie: Die meisten hier arbeiten für 0 Euro am 
Projekt, versuchen ihr Möglichstes, Hilfestellung zu geben und sind hoch 
qualifiziert.


Schlafen Sie doch erst einmal über ein Problem. Dann ist das Testosteron 
oder Adrenalin (oder beides) abgebaut und es schwingt nicht die Keule im 
Unterton.


Ich hoffe, die trotz der Form geäußerten Hilfestellungen waren 
erfolgreich. Ansonsten formulieren Sie bitte die noch existenten Probleme.

Mac Open Office 4 Installation Problem

I am using Mac OSX 10.8.4, on my Mac book Air and had been using OpenOffice
for many years. Recently when I upgraded it to Open Office 4.0, I cannot
run the programme. The screenshot of error is enclosed.

I uninstalled, reinstalled but nothing has happened.

Open Office 4 ist eine Katastrophe

Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,

Die neue Version von Open Office ist eine Katastrophe (höflich 
formuliert). Hier nur die schlimmste Klopper, mit denen ich mich, seit 
ich den Unfug leichtsinnigerweise runtergeladen habe, erfolglos 
herumschlage. (ich arbeite seit knapp 20 Jahren am Computer, kenne mich 
also eigentlich aus...)


1. Programm läuft nur Englisch...
2. Wenn ich Programme wie z.B. rtf., doc, docx usw. via öffnen mit 
öffnen will, schlägt mir Windows7 penetrant den Adobe Reader oder Office 
calc oder sonst einen Witz vor. Das Ändern der Standardprogramme ist 
nicht möglich; Windows kann Ihre neuen exe-Dateien anscheinend nicht 
erkennen. Hurra Ich hab eine Stinkwut.
Sinnvolles Dateiöffenen funktioniert ausschließlich, indem ich die 
Programme erst lade und von ihnen aus die Dateien öffne... ziemlich 
umständlich, um es vorsichtig zu formulieren.


Lauter Probleme, die ich in dieser Urgewalt noch nie erlebt habe -- und 
schon garnicht mit den früheren OpenOffice-Versionen.


Und jetzt werde ich, verd***t nochmal, versuchen, eine ältere Version 
runterladen.
Mailen Sie mir bitte eine entsprechende Url.  Die neue Version gehört 
auf den Müll. Updates Ihrers Programmes werde ich fürderhin meiden.


Sollte ich bis spätestens Dienstag, 12:00 MEZ keine sinnvolle Antwort 
von Ihnen bekommen, so werde ich außerdem das als Inkompetenz Ihrerseits 
auffassen und entsprechend publik machen.

Ihre Email ist eine Katastrophe (höflich formuliert). Hier die

Ich weiß nicht, was sie falsch gemacht haben, aber bei mir läuft auch
die neue Version komplett in Deutsch


 2. Wenn ich Programme wie z.B. rtf., doc, docx usw. via öffnen mit

 Office calc oder sonst einen Witz vor. Das Ändern der
 Standardprogramme ist nicht möglich;

Auch dies muss ein Fehler bei ihrer Installation sein, bei mir
funktioniert die Dateizuordnung immer noch. Wenn sie nicht in der Lage
sind, den Dateityp zuzuordnen, dann liegt dies entweder an einem
beschädigten Win7-System oder an ihrem Kenntnistand. 

 Sinnvolles Dateiöffenen funktioniert ausschließlich, indem
 ich die Programme erst lade und von ihnen aus die Dateien öffne...
 ziemlich umständlich, um es vorsichtig zu formulieren.

Wenn dies funktioniert, ist das Programm offenbar lauffähig, aber sie
schaffen es nicht, Windows passend zu konfigurieren.


 Und jetzt werde ich, verd***t nochmal, versuchen, eine ältere Version 
 runterladen.
 Mailen Sie mir bitte eine entsprechende Url.  Die neue Version gehört

Jeder darf machen, was ihm beliebt.

Und nun auch noch eine unverschämte Drohung!?

Ihnen seid mitgeteilt, dass alle Mitglieder dieser Mailingliste
_freiwillige_Helfer_ sind, die einen Teil ihrer (knappen!) Freizeit
opfern, um anderen zu helfen! Wir sind kein Support-Team irgendeiner
Firma, das verpflichtet wäre, jeden unhöflichen Schreihals zu helfen!

 Mit der Ihnen gegenüber angebrachten Hochachtung,

Genau von dieser ist hier nichts zu bemerken...

Aus lauter Gutmütigkeit 2 Tipps (und das, obwohl ich Windows noch
nicht einmal verwende):

a) Laden sie die _deutsche_ Version herunter!

b) Bringen sie ggf. Windows bei, mit welchem Programm es welche
Dateien zu öffnen hat. Dazu gibt es 2 Wege: Rechtsklick/öffen mit...
und dabei den Haken bei immer mit diesem Programm öffnen oder
verwenden sie die von Microsoft vorgeschlagene Variante:

Abschließender Tipp: Tief durchatmen, ausprobieren und ggf. noch einmal
_freundlich_ nachfragen.

20 Jahre am Computer und dann solche Aussagen oder besser hirnloser

Du hast in diser Zeit scheinbar nichts gelernt.

Hallo,

ich fand den Tonfall, in dem dieses Posting geschrieben wurde, auch
etwas merkwürdig, habe mich aber gleichwohl dazu entschlossen, es an
die Liste weiterzuleiten, da sein Inhalt vielleicht ein Trollversuch
aber eben kein Spam ist.

Bei mir stand allenfalls die Frage im Raum, ob es nicht eine
Fürsorgepflicht geben könnte, die es gebietet, Menschen zu ihrem eigenen
Schutz von derartigen Veröffentlichungen abzuhalten.

Da ich aber mangels gegenteiliger Anhaltspunkte davon ausgehe, es mit
verantwortlichen Erwachsenen zu tun zu haben, gebe ich auch in solchen
Fällen der Meinungsfreiheit den Vorzug und leite weiter.

Wer an eine öffentliche Mailingliste postet, muss wissen, was er tut.

versuch es mal mit der deutschen 4.0 Version, die Du hier herunterladen 
kannst:

Wenn es dann immer noch nicht geht, findest Du die (ebenfalls deutsche) 
vorherige Version hier:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/openofficeorg.mirror/files/localized/de/3.4.1/Apache_OpenOffice_incubating_3.4.1_Win_x86_install_de.exe/download

Die jetzige Version solltest Du auf jeden Fall vorher deinstallieren.
