I did follow that (windows 8) link and every steps passed.
I even did something I don't usualy do: although I did not
needed it according to page, I downloaded and ran their
troubleshooting util which did not find anything wrong.

this may not even be a windows issue

i.e. somehow, vbox does not pick up something audio-related ...

host is the only piece of this puzzle that does work and has audio!!

thank you,

Just for kicks, do you mind downloading and installing this reactOS
appliance VM and see if you get sound on that one?

http://sourceforge.net/projects/reactos/files/ReactOS/0.3.17/ReactOS-0.3.17-REL-vbox.zip/download
(do not click on any banners or buttons, just wait 10 secs and the download
of the .zip file will auto-start).

I´m just suggesting this as an easy way to check if sound from VBox to the
host system is working without having to install a full blown MS Windows...

My gut feeling is that perhaps this is something related to permissions and
users (linux user accounts, groups) preventing the vbox process from having
access o the sound device.

What kind of host system you´re running this on? desktop? laptop?
What I´m trying to find is if the Audio device is motherboard based, or
hanging off the USB bus as is the case in some rare system setups...

But I´m just shooting in the dark as I know nothing about your hardware...

Re: [VBox-users] practical use of second video card/GPU with PCI passthrough

2015-07-28 Thread Stephan Hockley
Daniel,

I just encountered a similar problem running Carlson Survey with an embeded
Intellicad 7.2 engine. In short, based on me calling Carlson, I entered the
following command: hwacceleration and switched the default hardware
acceleration value from ON, 1, to OFF 0 and degraded the graphic processing
to bitmap (.bmp) vector graphics. Works fine, though I am not doing any on the
3d modeling the AutoCad products like Civil 3D or Revit could do.

 Hi all,

I'm looking at a scenario with a Linux host and a Windows
 guest

The main reason for the Windows guest is to run AutoCAD

I've heard various opinions about this: AutoCAD runs, but
 some graphical
operations a bit slow, even with the VirtualBox 3D
 acceleration enabled.

I'd like to understand whether it is possible to do the
 following and
the practical issues that may arise:

 - add a second video card/GPU to the machine
 - add a second monitor, connected to the new video card/GPU
 - associate the second video card/GPU with the guest using
 PCI passthrough

 Some questions come to mind:

 - how stable is the passthrough support these days?
 - how will the mouse pointer and keyboard know when to
 interact with the
guest and how to get them back to the host?
 - how to install the video card driver in the guest, will it
 just work
in a VESA mode the first time it starts up?
 - has anybody tried this particular solution with AutoCAD,
 was it worth
 the effort?
 - can anybody comment on which brand of card is most likely
 to work with
passthrough, e.g. the NVIDIA Quadro cards perhaps?

 Regards,

 Daniel

hello,

I am on Centos6 64bit (host) using virtualbox 4.3.30
and my guest is Windows 7 64bit.

I have Pulse audio and Alsa installed on the host.

I have audio on host but not on the guest.

mix-n-match of these config settings have not worked

so far letting me have audio on the guest.

Host Audio Driver: OSS,PULSE,ALSA
Audio Controller: Intel HD

I am not seeing any audio-related errors in virtualbox log.

any idea as what to do next will be greatly appreciated.

thank you,

1. Did you install the guest additions on the guest?
2. If you go to control panel in the Win7 Guest,, open the Hardware
Manager, and expand the devices tree, do you see any audio devices under
multimedia devices ?
3. Do you get a volume slider in the systray?

With these answers, we could have a better idea about what is going on.

PS: I´m not sure what´s your reason not to go with 5.0, as it brings many
improvements, performance-wise.

Device Manager (not Hardware Manager)

device tree expanded and there is no Multimedia Devices (or even something
close to that) just the normal sound device

3. Do you get a volume slider in the systray?

you mean sound icon on taskbar/system tray of desktop?
yes there is a volume slider

I work on linux but I have to have Windows on the side for some stuff.
My windows needs are absolute basics, like basic noise (audio/sound) comes out
of headphone will be fine...
