I am into the old tools rather than the 'disposable' ones. My friend, the butcher, had old knives, hand- operated salami cutters, saws and so forth on the wall of his butcher shop. Lovely stuff. Hi Jerry, Thanks for the info. Is this the rod you were talking about? http://www.cabelas.com/product/Cabelas-Telescopic-Panfish-Poles/738690.uts Some notes on Tenkara. Some of you remember VFB member Mark Romero, who sadly passed a couple of years ago. His spouse Misa Ishimura was co-author of one of the books on Tenkara fishing. http://tinyurl.com/l9v3zae More on Misa here: https://sites.google.com/site/misakoishimura/ Wes Wada Bend, Oregon On Sat, Aug 9, 2014 at 8:23 PM, jerryp...@comcast.net wrote: I've messed around with it. I first saw my first tenkara rod about 5 or 6 years ago when a customer walked in to the local fly shop I frequent. He was a frequent traveler and well versed in tenkara fishing. He'd brought a tenkara rod back from Japan which set the owner back $300. He showed us how to rig it and demonstrated a bit of casting. I had a chance to exam in the rod and it looked familiar to me. Reminded of the long cane poles we sometime used for crappie fishing when I was in college in NW Tennessee. Went home and rummaged through my Cabela's catalog and came across telescoping graphite crappie poles, ranged from 10 to 14 feet in length. I ordered a 10 footer and when I got it I took it to the shop and we compared it with the Tenkara rod very little difference even manufactured by the same company except the price which was $275 less than the shop owner. I used it a couple of times but it's tough to use a 10 foot rod. Still if folks are interested in getting into tenkara fishing, it's an inexpensive way to get started. Wes: That's the one. It's a cheap way to try tenkara fishing. You can put a loop on the piece of fly line you want to and do a loop to eye connection. Another way, as I found out by accident, the one I bought had a butt cap on it which came off and I could have popped the tip top off and threaded the fly line through the rod and seated it with some Goop or flexible cement. Re: [VFB] Observations of VFB and age
Whether or not the sport of fly fishing is in trouble I am not sure. Certainly you do not see the younger people getting into it. Our local TU chapter is very active and we do alot of things. However when you look at the core group , it is primarily retired members, with just a couple of younger members who are really active. But when I go fishing there is no lack of fisherman out there. I spend alot of the spring fishing the Delaware river system. Over the years there is more and more people fishing, and spots That I used to have myself, well no longer. There are many times when we can't even get a spot on our home pool . And over the last 20 odd years or so, fishing out west the same thing has occured. There used to be 3 fly shops in West Yellowstone. Now ther are 5, and when you go in there is always people in them. I donot even go into the park to fish anymore during the normal summer season, you can't find a spot to fish. Go to any of the known rivers in Montana, and there are people all over. You have to hike or backpack and seek out the unknown, smaller streams to be alone. So as I said I am not sure of the future of fly fishing. I am seeing younger people fishing, and seeing more women fly fishing also.. Ron B 'Anthony Spezio' via VFB Mail vfb-mail@googlegroups.com wrote: I live in a rural area where they are lakes and rivers all around. One of the big business in the area is fishing and guiding on the lakes and ricers and creeks along with a lot of campgrounds. What we see here are many people leaving Wal-Mart with 15.00 spinning outfits on plastic covered cardboard kits. Our Wal-Mart quit carrying any type of fly fishing gear except a few flies in a package that fall apart after the first cast. We had three fly shops in the area. we now have only one and that one has changed hands three times since it opened. I have personally tutored a number of young folks but as far as I know only three have stayed with it. What bothers me most I have seven grandson and great grans sons but none are interested in fishing. No interest at all. When they visit, I never see their noses out of their cell phones or computer games. They are all addicted to them. My son in law is a good fly fisher but his some has absently no interest even though we have taken him out and he has caught some fish. I have also tried to teach him to tie, no interest. Our local flyclub also has youth programs such as Next Cast and Kokanee Carnival, but in general, like elsewhere, this is an older person's pasttime like rock hounding, old time fiddlers, or classic cars. Also, first impressions for a lot of folks is that this is an expensive, elitist hobby to get into. We have a large fly tying expo in Albany, Oregon each year, and one friend, who owns a major fly tying materials company, always points out how you can look at the show floor and not see anyone visiting that is under 40. I don't think there is any question that in the future, many flyshops and fishing gear businesses will bite the dust, as there won't be the critical mass of customers existing to sustain them. Across the USA, fishing and hunting licenses sales have been in a steep decline. Our local FW department has just announced a 35% cut in their budget due the poor license sales and the Congressional sequester. That's not to say there isn't a younger group out there, but as Peggy noted, they are more internet and social network oriented, and much of what they learn is through YouTube, Vimeo and sites sporting video tutorials. If you want to see some of this younger crowd, attend a fly fishing film tour showing. Membership in fly clubs is not seen as a cool way to spend your time! More than anything, IMO, families do not stress the outdoors like they used to, due to lack of experience, time or money. Every fly fisher I know grew up in families that spend at lot of time outdoors fishing, camping and hunting. Also organizations like Cub and Boy Scouts were a lot more prevalent. Not having these resources, it is no wonder younger people fall into other interests. What we need is another the movie grin. Transformers vs. the Wily Brown Trout. I have 4 Viet Nam era vets and 3 Iraq and Afghanistan veterans. What a joy to to work with these veterans. PHWFF has been great on providing fly rods, vices and tying tools. What we could use more of is materials if you have any extra items falling off your fly tying table we could sure use them. I will be sure to give credit to any items donated. I was also thinking it might be fun to do a “Blue Gill” swap with five of the veterans here and five from this list, so they may see some of the work others are doing and I can keep it simple for them. Re: [VFB] Tenkara Anyone?
We use these for fishing off piers down the beach. It is usually the old Greek and Italians who use them but I have had them over time. Allows them to get the float where they want it irrespective of the current. All the piers have been around for a long time and are made of wood. You see these holes along the entire length, as if a kid went nuts with a drill. It is because the fisherman screw into the piers these large, screw- tipped hooks that you get from hardware stores (the ones usually with red rubber coating) and can use them as rod holders. These rods are 15-20' long. Fold down to a yard or so in length. R On 11/08/2014 3:10 AM, jerryp...@comcast.net wrote: Wes: That's the one. It's a cheap way to try tenkara fishing. Cabela's recommendation that the line shouldn't be longer than the rod is right on the money. If you're planning on using a leader, you might want to make a bit shorter. Re: [VFB] Average age so far
I dont see it being such an issue in Australia. we have quite an active fly fishing community, although a number of general fishing stores have cut down their fly fishing sections to almost nothing. Many of us buy gear from the US or ebay due to the prices being charges here. Ridiculous is an understatement as a general rule. However, if you look at flylife.com.au, you can see a lot of activity. When some flyfishing movies were shown in a cinema. all sessions were booked out. Many of the people attending would have been in the late 20s/early 30s I seem to remember. Re: [VFB] Observations of VFB and age
What a great shame Tony. The flies you refer to come ouot of Africa and although rubbish, still cost a good $2.50 here. I used to spend big for little return when starting out, before venturing into fly tying and spending big on materials. The old story..The Most Expensive Way to Save Money :) I try to involve my kids in fixing things Ie putting in screws, tightening nuts, etc so that they will know how to take care of themselves and be able to change their own light bulbs. Laugh if you will but there are so many who simply cannot do it. Shame they don't have the fishing bug (fishing fly?? very funny!!). I still enjoy using my grandfather's old tools. Shame he wasn't into making bamboo rods and fly fishing! On 10/08/2014 4:04 AM, 'Anthony Spezio' via VFB Mail wrote: I live in a rural area where they are lakes and rivers all around.
