We use these for fishing off piers down the beach. It is usually the old Greek and Italians who use them but I have had them over time. Allows them to get the float where they want it irrespective of the current. All the piers have been around for a long time and are made of wood. You see these holes along the entire length, as if a kid went nuts with a drill. It is because the fisherman screw into the piers these large, screw- tipped hooks that you get from hardware stores (the ones usually with red rubber coating) and can use them as rod holders. These rods are 15-20' long. Fold down to a yard or so in length.

That's the one. It's a cheap way to try tenkara fishing. You can put a loop
on the piece of fly line you want to and do a loop to eye connection. Another
way, as I found out by accident, the one I bought had a butt cap on it which
came off and I could have popped the tip top off and threaded the fly line
through the rod and seated it with some Goop or flexible cement. Cabela's
recommendation that the line shouldn't be longer than the rod is right on the
money. If you're planning on using a leader, you might want to make a bit
shorter.
I actually met Mark and his wife at a show many, many years ago.

Hi Jerry,

Thanks for the info. Is this the rod you were talking about?

Some notes on Tenkara. Some of you remember VFB member Mark Romero, who
sadly passed a couple of years ago. His spouse Misa Ishimura was co-author
of one of the books on Tenkara fishing.

I've messed around with it. I first saw my first tenkara rod about 5 or 6
years ago when a customer walked in to the local fly shop I frequent. He
was a frequent traveler and well versed in tenkara fishing. He'd brought a
tenkara rod back from Japan which set the owner back $300. He showed us
how to rig it and demonstrated a bit of "casting". I had a chance to exam
in the rod and it looked familiar to me. Reminded of the long cane poles
we sometime used for crappie fishing when I was in college in NW Tennessee.
Went home and rummaged through my Cabela's catalog and came across
telescoping graphite crappie poles, ranged from 10 to 14 feet in length. I
ordered a 10 footer and when I got it I took it to the shop and we compared
it with the Tenkara rod very little difference even manufactured by the
same company except the price which was $275 less than the shop owner. I
used it a couple of times but it's tough to use a 10 foot rod. Still if
folks are interested in getting into tenkara fishing, it's an inexpensive
way to get started.

I did some fishing with them in January and caught some large piranhas
with them.

To me they are nice to use when I go to the local pond.

Subject: [VFB] Tenkara Anyone?

Has anyone else here gotten into Tenkara yet? I'm now using it where I
used to go to my two weight. 5th year of drought, the rivers and creeks
are low, Tenkara means sight casting to small fish , for the most part.
And you can get a deep rod bend out of a 5 inch sunfish.

We are also having some luck in using Tenkara to get new fishermen
interested in the fly. The rods are a little steep, but there's no reel
involved and lines go for $2 - $20. Very light and easy to cast. We
(my local fly club) have a beginner's Tenkara outing scheduled for next
weekend and we have 30 people signed up. We'll pair them up with
experienced fishermen and get them rolling. Gonna have to put a few on
regular rods part-time 'cause we don't have access to that many T-rods.
