Okay I am having some problems getting some round rubber legs to lay
correctly on some shrimp flies I have been tying and need some
suggestions to get this straightened out.

I am tying the round rubber (koosh ball rubber) in near the eye of the
hook on a bare to thread wrapped shank. I am tying in two pieces in
the middle then wrapping down the rubber about a quarter inch, then
folding the end back and wrapping it down to cause the legs to hang
down and slightly to the sides but facing towards the eye. Problem is
they are going all over the place instead of as I noted.

As far as lighting goes I have a folding lamp from Home Depot that
uses the daylight bulb like the Ott light also have stand light that
does the same. Cut a 45-60 degree angle part way into a piece of 2x4
or block of wood (approx. half way through the block or three quarters
to an inch deep) and you can stick a piece of cardboard or foam of
varying colors into it as a backdrop to help make your flies pop out
at you. This also works well for a photography backdrop. This is the

Folks: It's the dog days of Summer, and that means (at least around here)
that the snakes are crawling, and are meaner than ever. Yesterday, my son

getting a part off an old Ford we have parked there when they saw a huge
rattler gliding across the yard. They ran up and got me, and wouldn't ya
know it but the firing pin on my shotgun is broken, so I get my 22 magnum
pistol and go out there. I spot him, and you know how ppl are about telling
you the size of snakes. It's like telling you the size of the fish that got
away. But this was one of the Eastern Diamondbacks you see on the TV shows,
as in over 5ft long, and bigger than my forearm. But the weird thing is,
even after I shot (and missed 3 out of 5 times, cause it's hard to hit a
snake with an old revolver at 15 yards, cause that was as close as I was
getting LOL). Anyway, through all that, he NEVER ratted a single time. I
shot and missed. I shot again and hit him. He stopped dead in his tracks and
I thought I had heart shot him, cause I knew it was a body shot. I shot
again, and hit him again. (reason I know is cause after he had gone, I saw
the blood stains on the ground) He still didn't move. His tail was straight
up, and he had 7 or 8 rattles, each at least 3/4 across, but like I said,
they NEVER once rattled. I missed him three more times, and had one round
mis fire before he FINALLY started crawling off VERY SLOWLY. My son in law
had heard the shots and came down with his shotgun, and we went out into the
woods and hunted the snake for 30 minutes or so, but never saw him again.
Man, that really scared me knowing how close he was to my son and grand
daughter. He was a BEAUTIFUL snake as he had JUST shed his skin and his
colors and markings were really bright. But he'll be dead and beautiful if
I see him again and hopefully get more shots at him LOL. Anyway, if you live
anywhere that is snake country, this is a bad time of the year, so be on the
 lookout at all times. Chuck

It also depends on the size of the fish the larger the fish the more
damage just lipping does to the fish. If the fish is over 5 lbs you

I have just finished watching the Walmart Bass programme that we get in
England and was wondering if the way these fish are handled has any
 detrimental effect on them.
We are taught to hold fish supporting their bellies etc but a lot of Bass
get swung on to decks and held up by their mouths.
I am not critising and dont want to start any arguments, just curious if it
does harm the fish or not.

On a lighter note, my last scan results showed tumors to be stable and at
the moment i feel pretty good.

Even though I was a officer in UFT and all the other stuff, I really got my
tying experience with the swaps on VFB! You guys have just been the very
best in support, and it just encouraged me to go out and do more.

Many thanks and if you get to Manchester VT this year, my clean tying table
 is there.

[VFB] Holographic laminates

2012-05-18 Thread Robert Morger
Anyone have any suggestions on where I can find holographic laminates
or vinyls for crease flies?
I am looking for 8 x 12 or 12 x 12 sheets in silver and gold with the
sparkle pattern and the prismatic pattern. They can be adhesive backed
or heat transfer type materials. Most of my searches come up with the
bulk trade companies (alibaba, trade-china, trade-india, etc.) or have
large quantities required to buy the material. I am looking for small
batches of material that I can get over extended periods of time not
the one off ebay type purchase.
Thanks

I haven't been able to find the foil at any of the craft stores around
here. This may be what you're looking for.

They appear to be the source for most of the foils I've seen in fly shops or
at the local fly fishing shows. These are transfer foils which can be
pressed on to the adhesive backed craft foam, or you use foiling glue
spread on regular craft foam sheets. You can also apply them to tacky epoxy
 or silicone. Hope this helps.

All things considered, I'd rather be in Philadelphia.

Re: [VFB] Soft Body Plastic Resin

2012-04-25 Thread Robert Morger
You might try Aleene's Fabric Fusion also biggest problem i have with
it is its drying time. It takes quite a while to dry when it is put on
in thicker applications. It is also water based and drys clear.

Can be found at WalMarts, Michaels and most Fabric Stores

Soft body is a water-based polyurethane (I guess) latex, but it is

tying - but you will most likely not find them among the mainstream
products. But it never hurts to experiment...

Angler's Choice has, I believe, exited the fly tying market and although I
have located some online, it must be old stock.

Soft Body is opaque white in colour and dries clear. Does anyone on the
list know of a suitable alternative?

I wondered if Minwax water based oil-modified polyurethane would be
 similar. See

the original Soft body may be found here: -

Re: [VFB] Damsels and Dragons Swap 2012

2012-04-25 Thread Robert Morger
Just figured out my Monday post did not go through to the list(s)

Anyway I received Chucks flies in the mail this weekend and I am still
waiting on a couple sets for both groups to complete the swap. I plan
on waiting till this weekend for the missing sets and sending them out
on Monday. If you can't wait let me know and I will get yours headed
your way immediately.

I also need to know which Charity you would like the extra set sent to?
Casting for Recovery http://castingforrecovery.org/
or
Project Healing Waters http://www.projecthealingwaters.org/

I will probably end up sending flies to both because of the wonderful
donation of flies from Chuck Alexander.

I am also working on a couple wooden flyboxes in my spare time if they
come out well the donated flies will go in them otherwise I will pick
up a box at a local retailer.

Well, I maybe cann't although my guess is that these originated as bait
 hooks, possibly worm.

I tried wikipedia and even they don't know.

I have trying off and on over the years to figure it out myself, one of
the greatest unanswered questions. The explaination of being a worm hook is
the closet I've come to answering it.

Wondering if DonO knows, actually, haven't seen him on list for a while,
 getting concerned.

   Ashley

I have no idea why they are called English bait hooks. Having fished the
first 28 years of my life in England, both as a bait fisher and fly fisher,
I never came across this style of hook. Maybe Ashley can shed some light on
 this?

[VFB] Bamboo Repairs?

2012-03-12 Thread Robert Morger
Had a customer come into the shop this weekend and asked me about
getting an old bamboo rod repaired. It sounds like the glue gave out
in a section. Does anyone do that type repair or know of someone I can
put this guy in contact with?

I agree with you 100% there Chuck. Here you can cut yourself a break
by fishing only at State Parks where you don't need a license unless
they changed that this year also. Our Park system is hurting after the
 drought last year.

[VFB] Home made dubbing question, Proportions

2012-02-28 Thread Robert Morger
I made up a bunch of dubbing recently using about 50% poly yarn and
40% rabbit fur or mink fur (Guard hairs intact) and 10% shiny stuff,
the colors came out nice but the mix is a bear to get to cling to the
thread.

So my question is how much underfur to coarse or synthetic mix should
be blended to make a mix that wraps well on the thread?

Re: [VFB] Home made dubbing question, Proportions

2012-02-28 Thread Robert Morger
Fibers would be 3/8 to about 3/4 all were blended well before
combining together. Used a coffee grinder to mix them.

On 2/28/12, Wayne Blake-Hedges wayneb22...@yahoo.com wrote:
 Hi Robert;

How long were the fibers you used? How did you mix the blend?

Homemade dubbing sometimes involves a lot of experimentation to get the
desired results. A couple of things I learned were the length of the fibers
you use have a great influence on how your dubbing blend will behave also,
start with one portion of your blend, get it to length and spun/blended
depending on your method. Then do the same with each individual material
then, blend them together. For dubbing you plan to spin around a thread,
3/8 to 1/2 fiber length is a good start. Longer threads are harder to spin
around your tying thread but lend themselves to rope dubbing type methods.

Re: [VFB] Home made dubbing question, Proportions

2012-02-28 Thread Robert Morger
Will have to try the rope dubbing technique. I think I have the
general gist of it and will try it out.

On 2/28/12, Robert Morger rmor...@gmail.com wrote:
Fibers would be 3/8 to about 3/4 all were blended well before
combining together. Used a coffee grinder to mix them.

 On 2/28/12, Wayne Blake-Hedges wayneb22...@yahoo.com wrote:
 Hi Robert;

How long were the fibers you used? How did you mix the blend?

Homemade dubbing sometimes involves a lot of experimentation to get the
desired results. A couple of things I learned were the length of the
 fibers
you use have a great influence on how your dubbing blend will behave
 also,
start with one portion of your blend, get it to length and spun/blended
depending on your method. Then do the same with each individual material
then, blend them together. For dubbing you plan to spin around a thread,
3/8 to 1/2 fiber length is a good start. Longer threads are harder to
 spin
around your tying thread but lend themselves to rope dubbing type
 methods.

[VFB] Off Topic Help Needed

2012-02-02 Thread Robert Morger
Hey guys my house was hit by a bolt of lightening a week ago and it
blew out most of the electronics in the house. Everyone was ok but it
really screwed up a few locations around the house. Luckily there was
no fire associated with the strike that I could not get out
immediately. Very rude awakening at 4 in the morning. We have visited
with insurance and are starting to pick up the pieces and replace some
of the items that were destroyed.

Does anyone know much about antenna systems? I need to replace the old
system but don't have much of a clue on what I need and how to set it
up.
I do know it had a rotator control, pre-amp and a uhf-vhf fringe
antenna. Anyway if you can help me in any way please drop me a line
off list probably would be best unless others want to learn the
benefits of off air systems B^)

FISHING?TYING RELATED: I did find where my wife hid my flies for the
Thunder Creek Swap that morning so I should be able to get them out as
soon as I have tagged them and found a envelope to send them.

Re: [VFB] Thunder Creek Streamers

2012-01-09 Thread Robert Morger
That's where the too short comes into play the hair that doesn't flare
(same area you are talking about) has either been picked over by me or
is too short for the hook/pattern, thus the change. This was an odd
bucktail in that it had a lot more white hair on it than brown and the
white hair was very long and fairly straight but that was the reason I
bought it.

It's not just the drought Chuck from what I understand from a few
folks that know is that the government also cut the amount the
subsidize peanuts in this area this year and alot of the farmers
decided to grow crops that yield higher returns.

Anyway, at the beginning of this Summer, peanuts went from $48 for a 50
pound bag to $55. Then, about October I guess it was, they went to $65 a
bag. Then yesterday, she went to pick some up and they were $87 per 50
pound bag. Her prices have been the same for over 5 yeasr, but she is going
to HAVE to go up now, so we'll have to see if it affects business. That's
about a 91% increase in less than 6 months if my math is correct. Anybody
here who likes peanuts or peanut butter, better stock up. They said that it
was mainly cause of the draught in Texas and other states out that way. I
didn't know Texas raised that many peanuts, but I guess they do. Chuck

stick on eyes with a cover of epoxy or uv cure product. Also, I have
added a little tinsel to the body and if making them the same color as a

beard or throat. Also, good quality long craft fur is good, I use it for
 teaching this pattern.

Fun to tie and I've caught lots of fish on them everywhere.

[VFB] Fly Lines

2011-11-20 Thread Robert Morger
Anyone know of a one stop web site that teaches you about all the
different tapers on fly lines. Why you would use one over another etc.

 Go tohttp://www.flyanglersonline.com/

On the left side, click on 'Fly Fishing Basics'

On the next page that comes up, again on the left side, click on
 'Fishing 101'

On the next page that comes up, under Recent Articles, click on:
Unscrambling The Fly Line Alphabet Soup

andDouble Taper vs Weight Forward Fly Lines

Wish there was a direct link to these pages, but FAOL has a funky way
 of doing stuff (IMHO).

 Tony, go to:

 http://www.filehippo.com

 Look under Malware

Download AVG FREE. It's an antivirus that should stop that.

Download it, run it, and...I'll have to check on my laptop to see if
 you
have to set it up for automatic operation or not. I think that's all you
 have to do.

Re: [VFB] two questions about cool-aid

2011-07-28 Thread Robert Morger
You may want to try some other dry drink mixes they use the same type
dyes, stuff like Ocean-Spray or Crystal light or generic brands. Be a
bit more pricey but possibly more available.

I saw a shirt that was dyed with 100% cranberry and grape juice that
was mixed with red wine vinegar that had really nice color that might
also be an option.

Stephen don't be a spelling nazi 8^)
