Re: [VFB] What is in your vices? HACKLE

2018-11-27 Thread Rene Zillmann
Hi Don,

we all need all the time hackle. To be honest, when I was at the sowbug
last year, I did buy some nice black and grizzly necks/saddle. I'm nicely
stocked there. The only hackle I'm still searching is a shinny, reddish
dun. I have some 5 or 7 saddles, necks, even one full pelt in colors close
to it, but only close...

Nice to see you posting, I wish you a speedy recovery.

underbody, did wonderfully during stone season. My fishing rods and lines
are put away for the winter..but will come out again come spring. Right

VFB Mail is

Re: [VFB] What is in your vices?

2018-11-25 Thread Joyce M Westphal
It is in the November 2018 Flyfishing & Flytying magazine (from the UK).
It is a standard hedgehog pattern You can see some tied on Youtube. You
can certainly tie it any size that works for you. It reminds me of the Blue
Ribbon flies sunken stone pattern. I found the metallic thread by doing an
online Google search but also found my local fly shop had it. You can often
also find things like that at JoAnns. My JoAnns did not have it, however. I
wound it onto my Nor-vise bobbin using the spool stuck on my sewing machine
thread holder and my electric drill to do the winding. I'm tying mine on a
size 11 Stealth dry fly hook. The thread is a bit thinner and easier to
break than standard 8-0 Uni but still does a good job. I'm reinforcing the
bottom at the end of the fly tying with Flexament.

nobody was answering my question about your tying I do not get the

Just checked in google groups, and saw a lot of answers. Strange that I
do not get the mails, even not all of mine...

2018-11-25 Thread Pete Gramp
Which issue of the Flyfishing and Tying Journal was it in, Joyce? I can't
seem to locate that fly in the Winter 2019 issue, but I may have missed
it... you have my curiosity going here. From the name of the fly, I doubt
I'd ever fish it, based on the water types I fish most often (very narrow,
slow flowing brooks and streams with trout of max size ~10 inches in
length)... but you never know, if tied small enough, they may work where I
fish :) And besides, I tie spey and atlantic salmon flies in 6/0 size and
goodness knows I'll likely not fish those any time soon! Some day, I hope,
but not any time soon... unless I win an all expense paid trip or something
haha.

Nice fly. I often use Aunt Lydia's rug yarn, single strand as a post.
Currently finishing up so Road Hog flies, but need to find some more dark
deer hair. These flies were in the Flyfishing and Tying journal and I
think will work well on the Provo.

What are you doing to tie next?

I'll do 2 main things:

I will ty a lot of my parachute beetles, but with different body
colors, to the the effect of the various colors next year.

And I'll do some variations for EHCs for a similar reason.

And what are you doing?

Re: [VFB] What is in your vices?

2018-11-24 Thread Pete Gramp
Thanks, Neville and Tony, for the complements! It isn't the most realistic
or fanciest fly I've tied, by a long shot, but it does show some progress
being made. I hope to get back to tying realistic flies in the weeks
ahead. Coupled with traditional Scottish Lough flies, they're my
"specialty" of sorts. Or at least they're what I used to be able to tie
fairly well... Not sure what I want to tie in that regard to get back in
that realm - may start simple and do some Oliver Edwards flies. We'll see
how it goes. For now, I'm toying around with the new mayfly nymph bodies
and legs from Risen Fly company - or rather, I have the materials as of a
few days ago, and plan to work with them today. They look quite buggy, and
coupled with Flymen Fishing Company's extended shanks, I'm going to try my
hand at some jointed extended body mayflies. Always challenging myself
with these eyes of mine, I suppose... it's the only way I'll get back to
where I once was, I figure. Like learning to ride a bike all over again,
but it'll happen, I'm confident of it.

On a different note, I was all excited and ready to go to the international
fly tying symposium this last weekend, and then my wife realized it was
2.5hrs drive time each way instead of the roughly 2hrs to Somersett NJ
(sp?), and for whatever reason that extra half hour each way was a thorn in
her side for driving me out there (I'm not allowed to drive with the
epilepsy), so she got cold feet so to speak and cancelled the trek out
there for the day. The Edison show is a maybe for January - if I do go,
we'll get a hotel room for the weekend - but the lancaster show is a
certainty. At least I can get in some show or another this season :)
Sorry if I missed seeing anyone at the tying symposium last weekend.

I hope everyone had wonderful holidays / Thanksgivings,
Tight wraps,
-Pete

2018-11-11 Thread Tom Davenport
DonO, I doubt I will ever have anything come off of my vice that’s “like yours”
but I appreciate the picture of the micro leeches; lots of good ideas there.

My absence from VFB has been an an absence from email generally. Right now I
have 1500 unread emails on my phone; it wasn’t that long ago I deleted another
3000. Junk mail has made email practically useless (IMO).

VFB is the exception. Thanks mostly to stalwarts like you, and Tony, Peggy,
Rick, Rene, and several others.

Does Byard still pop into the list he started?

I still miss Larry, and I know a few others have passed as well. I’m so
thrilled that Tony is still with us, I know the Grim Reaper has been nipping on
his heels, but he’ll have none of it!

Rene,
Getting ready to start over to learn how to tie flies again.

Medications messed with the signals to my right hand over the past 2 months, so
it wouldn't do much more than spas out, twitch, tingle, and then not do any
small muscle chores other than cut with the scissors.

Tied Percy to prove to myself it was possible. Now I need to pick back up where
I left off with my first rope-dub efforts since stroke.

Sometimes I’ll add a brightly colored bead in the mix, and will attach a

think they hang better from an indicator, and impart a lot of motion to the

In the past I’ve been using a bugger pattern as an attractor, but have caught
most of the fish on the smaller dropper. With the micro-jigs the catches are
50-50.

Re: [VFB] What is in your vices?

2018-11-10 Thread Pete Gramp
Tied some lively legz nymphs this afternoon. By "some" I mean 2. But in
all fairness I was chatting with my son the whole while and he tied with
me, also lively legz nymphs, also 2 of them, and we made 2 batches of
rabbit fur dubbing using a coffee grinder method, and he willingly spent
about 2 hours helping to clean up the tying room a bit (it needs another
couple full days worth of cleaning... but we made a dent on it), so I
can't knock it one bit. I found my 6 packs of various shades of whiting
tailing packs / coq de leon, which I couldn't for the life of me locate up
until today, so that made me thrilled. If I make it to the International
Fly Tying Symposium in New Jersey this next weekend, I hope to pick up some
more CDL tailing packs - I may have 6 packs, but the quantity of remaining
feathers in those 6 packs is next to nil, and I use them all of the time
for tails on my dries.
Anyhow, all in all it was a great tying session.

heading wet to Utah, then up to Henry's Lake in Idaho for a month, Bozeman
for the Faire and then on home. At the end we will have RV'd to the lower
48 and traveled to all 50 states, because we are wintering so far west I'm
not making Sowbug next year, but I'll be thinking of you all.

Hi,

winter is approaching - at least in the northern part of the globe.

What are you doing to tie next?

I'll do 2 main things:

I will ty a lot of my parachute beetles, but with different body colors,

to the the effect of the various colors next year.

And I'll do some variations for EHCs for a similar reason.

And what are you doing?

He likes to spend a lot of time alone out in the wilderness in different

I'm going to surprise him with a complete set up including flies.
