An outboard motor is a handy thing for a long trip to the fishing

shoreline of a bass lake at one-half to two-thirds of a mile an hour -
the proper speed for fly-rod fishing with bass bugs - is not an outboard
motor, but a well-trained wife.

I can relate to this personally, for years I paddled the canoe while my

Then one day in 1997 I sold 3 houses in Lowell,MA called a Triple hat

Trout fishing is always the best in the hardest to reach places, those with
the steepest, crookedest, bumpiest, narrowest roads, or no roads at all. That's
also where the bugs are thickest, but who cares about roads or bugs when you
can catch big trout all day! Rough roads, bugs and good fishing go together
like cheese and crackers and a glass of milk.

Hi Jimmy,
at least you didn't brake your leg or even more valuable parts.
I think we both are now close to 10 years on the list, and during this
time frame you had a couple of accidents. Some broken legs, some issues
with Callico, the was a story with a woodworking lathe etc. You should
really be more careful.
I wish you a quick recovery, you will have more time for tying.
And fish from your boat!
But wear a life jacket. You never know!

Re: [VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY

2010-06-27 Thread Niclas Runarsson
This is where the problems start. Who developed the coachman? Are you
sure? When did it become a royal coachman, a leadwing coachman, a fanwing
coachman, a then a (whoops) Royal Wulff? If the original tier wrapped a
body in peacock, is every peacock fly a copy or variation of that fly? If I
sub. peacock ice dub for peacock, is that still only a peacock variation?
What if I use black ice dub. Is that just a variation now, or is it a
black gnat? Color changed it? Why not the synthetic as a changer? What
about a Royal Wulff with poly wings? Is that still a Royal Wulff, since Lee
only made a change from white feather fanwings to white calf-tail to call it
a Royal Wulff? Can I call my Winger Adams a 'Don's Adams' like Lee Wulff
changed the Royal Fanwing Coachman by just changing the wing material?
(Maybe there was a tier named Royal Fanwing. No Buggs, there wasn't. And
nooo, we can't call a green Adams a Don's Adams-apple!)

Good example writing of two of my own:
With this variation I feel that I've been innovative and created something
new, even though it's in fact nothing more than taking an old fly and
applying other materials in other ways. I tied it being inspired by the old
one, but it's a fly I as well could have made without having the old one in
mind. Making a flat, tapered and segmented body to imitate the insect would
seem more natural to me, than making it look like a dull sausage. But...
basic blueprints for the prototype (and I'm not ashamed to call it that)
were on the table... and even though chenille has turned into Antron and
Krystal Flash / Ice Dub... and plain wrapping has turned into weaving on
underbody, its name is Montana + the describing Slim Sparkly:
http://www.swedneckflyfishing.com/temp/mss_1.jpg
http://www.swedneckflyfishing.com/temp/mss_2.jpg
http://www.swedneckflyfishing.com/temp/mss_3.jpg

I feel the same way with this sister variation of its sister fly... and
since this prototype, with the tails/antennaes and bi-color dorsal/ventral,
is more imitative than its sister fly, it's probably also more likely the
one I would have tied without having another fly in mind. However, if I
actually was aiming for being imitative, enough to bother with bi-color
weaving, a bi-color chenille sausage would have been my last choice. But,
again, basic blueprints are on the table so it's Bitch Creek... with the
describing Slim Sparkly:
http://www.swedneckflyfishing.com/temp/
http://www.swedneckflyfishing.com/temp/bcss_1.jpg bcss_1.jpg
http://www.swedneckflyfishing.com/temp/
http://www.swedneckflyfishing.com/temp/bcss_2.jpg bcss_2.jpg
http://www.swedneckflyfishing.com/temp/
http://www.swedneckflyfishing.com/temp/bcss_3.jpg bcss_3.jpg

But since this one actually is woven from the start, it's ALL about changing
the materials. So technically, to take it a step further and change its
white rubber legs into white biots, to make it even more imitative wouldn't
make a difference. It's still just another change of materials. It would
turn it even more into a different fly ('even more' as I think mine already
is)... but built upon the same blueprints. And if I took a couple of antron
strands and made a wingcase out of them, to make it even more imitative...
would it be a completely different fly or a Bitch n' Montana Mutation, Slim
 Sparkly version?

The original sausages were in my head from the start and I aimed to
improve, so these are just 'my versions'. But if I had done them before I
knew of the originals, had them on my web page for a couple of years and
then suddenly seen a friend using the sausages, I wouldn't automatically
think he had made 'chenille versions' of my own. The appearances of these
two, the shapes, their sharp contours and the light reflecting glare (which
I wish the camera could capture better) make them differ a lot from the
originals. How many would think 'Montana' if my thorax was black?

But 'improving an original' or 'creating from scratch' doesn't matter to me.
The Slim Sparkly generation has been a development in its own and both
of them are version three. Already existing blueprints don't stop me from
feeling innovative after my work with these. Several friends have also asked
for a step-by-step on the Sparkly Bitch, so I made one yesterday
(http://www.swedneckflyfishing.com/bc_slimsparkly_steps.htm).

... and today I'm packing my fourth Bitch Creek version for Don's Rope Swap.
;o)

/Nick - innovative copy-cat

My two cents:

His comment doesn't make any sense.

1. He says during the time period (past two decades) we have a
proliferation in new tying materials This comment refers to materials
2. But then he says Truth to be told there seems to be little that is
truly new in the fly tying world.Whereas this comment refers to fly
design or patterns. Didn't sound that way to me. But it's still not true
anyway.

See below for an example of tying a czech nymph by Davie McPhail. He
virtually does your rope dub technique but his attachment of the dubbing to the
hook is different to yours in that he does not anchor it first before turning
the dubbing araound the thread with his fingersBut he does hold the bobbin
and twist the dubbing around the thread in the same manner as DO.

Davie does not use my technique. He uses only one hand to twist the
anchored dubbing- I use two. He can get away with that on this dubbing, but
hare's ear and squirrel will not work- ask Nick. In my technique, you never
release the dubbing. That way all materials bind to themselves and the rope
never has to be re-tightened as you wrap. Using two hands would allow him to
segment and taper the fly in one movement- about 20 seconds, and his 1st
dubbing method was from 4:00 to 5:20. Rope-dubbing my way would allow him to
dub both color dubbings in one step in 30 seconds rather than taking him to
6:00- = 2 minutes. He would also get great segmentation to boot.

Also, like you said, he has to release the dubbing to make an anchor, and
fly-away dubbings will fall off the thread before he can make his anchor. My
technique is anchor 1st and two hands. Anything else is not my technique.

I don't know when Davie started his technique, but I have seen others doing
things more similar to the rope-dub ever since the VFB article and the earliest
shows around 2000. Also, I am not the only one rope-dubbing these days (the
right way), or else no one has learned anything in 10 years of free show
demonstrations and the VFB article. I tied at shows for many years and have
read many books and talked to many masters. Polly and others also had vaguely
similar noodleing techniques, but they are not the same as mine. Polly twisted
the thread with his dubbing- opposite of mine.

Maybe some day someone will show and prove to me that the rope-dub
technique has been used by others. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gC2aO5X0IJA I
checked for 8 years and no one could produce anything.

I guess that I should qualify this statement with time, that before I
started demonstrating it in 2000, no one had seen it. Davie's technique is not
mine, and ice dub would give him trouble every time he let go of it. Even if
someone is using the rope-dub technique, it would have to pre-date me
demonstrating it publically. I have a few friends publicly demonstrating my
method accurately to represent the DVD methods.

I am advertising my DVD on FAOL, and a Canadian tier accused early on me of
plagerizing Polly's technique. Before we could get his post expunged, a lot of
people were misled. He was chastized by the owner for false accusatins, but
never made an apology to me. Denny Conrad has since done a review of my DVD
for FAOL and has adopted the rope dub as his only dubbing method. He has tied
for 65 years and has never seen the technique elsewhere. He is thrilled with
his results and can tie excellent 3-color fishing flies in less than a minute.

So show me something before 2000 and let's start over. I started the
technique in the early 80's, but never made it public. So let's just use 2000.
 And roped yarns don't count.

During the past two decades we have seen an explosion in the popularity
of fly fishing. Thousands of new fly fishermen, and women, have embraced the
sport and taken up fly tying as a part of it. During this same period we have
had a proliferation in new tying materials; and new magazine abound espousing
and rehashing the many nuances of tying. After fifty plus years of fly tying, I
am always amused by tyers who purport to have discovered a brand new technique.
Truth to be told there seems

Good one Jimmy!

When if chance or hunger's powerful sway

Now, happy fisherman; now twitch the line!
How thy rod bends! behold, the prize is thine!

Back in the late 1950's when I was a youngster, I used to buy the Angling
Times weekly newspaper for the princely sum of sixpence which was 6 old
pence before they buggered everything up and went to the metric system of
100 pence to the pound from 240 pence to the pound! Anyhow, I digress,
Arthur Ransome used to write an occasional column for Angling Times which I
always found interesting. He spent quite a lot of his time in Russia, but
I'm not sure when. It may have been pre WWII.

Love that one Jimmy.

I remember one New Year's Day when it was 25 below and we could only
fish for about 10 to 15 minutes before going back into the car and running
the heater wide open until we were warm enough to go back out. But between
four of us we caught over a 100 perch that day. Then we had to put the
frozen
fish into buckets of water before we could clean them.

I look into ... my fly box, and think about all the elements I should
consider in choosing the perfect fly: water temperature, what stage of
development the bugs are in, what the fish are eating right now. Then I
remember what a guide told me. 'Ninety percent of what a trout eats is brown
and fuzzy and about five-eighths of an inch long.'

As my father recently said to me in an armchair session, it is not the
hundreds of fish taken that one remembers, but those few heavy trout taken
or lost under difficult conditions. Just the knowledge that a big fish is
present adds flavor to the pool.

H I would think if they spooled up thebacking without fastening it
securely to the reel, at that point, long before getting spooled, the person

Your line must always be fastened securely to the axle of the spool. If you
forget once and a fish strips the reel naked, you deserve several kicks. If you
forget a second time, you're not worth kicking.

Re: [VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY

2010-03-24 Thread Don Ordes
Sooo right, Jimmy.

Same goes for fly tying. I've never forgotten how to have fun at it.
Most tying demonstrations I see at the shows are dry- not the type fly, either.

When I get stressed out, I go in and tie dry flies (Cd'L,Winger,Whiting hackle)
and just
enjoy what modern materials have done for the simple pleasure of tying.

They argue about level lines and tapered, about heavy tackle or light, about
whther you ought to fish upstream or down, about a single built rod or a double
built. They get nasty the minute anybody says anything about balance -- that's
like dynamite to 'em -- and I've seen 'em almost start a fight over whether
Henshall designs were as good as Miss Austen's. After I've listened to them
awhile I think they all ought to get a cane pole and garden hackle and go down
to the stream someday the way they did when they were kids. It might do 'em
some good, and I bet they'd have a swell time, too You're right, George, I
said. All the tackle in the world won't give a fisherman a good time if he's
not built for it.

  No Life So Happy

Sorry about missing so many days of quotes. Been hectic at the Moore House.
I'll try to do better.

Hooked an big Owl on back cast. He took off like Hogan's Goat, my

A toast : One final cast for luck, and the rally last throw in honour of a
fair lady.
If they don't rise to that, then they are no gentlemen!

FYI: Hendrik is a long-time member of the VFB. Haven't heard from him in
years,
but he sure came up with a good quote. Hendric resides, or did, in South

Subject: [VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY - Fly Fishing Friends

I wrote this one for the book, but maybe it needs a little explaining.

Good fly fishing friends should meet face to face and rod to rod.

What I've written below and in the attachment, explains the quote
We have fly fishing friends we can see and visit. Then we have those
friends hat we've met and grown to call friend, on fly fishing e-mail lists.

Some of my fly fishing list friends are as close to me as other friends I've
had
for years, although I haven't met most of them in person.

I'm sure you know what I mean.. . . Allan Fish, Tony Spezio, Don Ordes,
LarryJohnson, Doyle Sowersby, Iain Short, Jeff Frye, Deb Duran, Chuck
Alexander, Bruce Whittle, Dean Larson, Joe Fusco, Joyce Westfall, Keith
Passant, ReneZillmann, Nick Runarsson, Rick Zieger, Chris Cook, Ian
Mitchell,
and on and on . .

If I left you out, I'm truly sorry, for I count all of you on the fly
fishing lists to which I belong as friends. Those above were the ones that
came to mind mosteadily

My wife Jody will second that. She has a warm place in her heart for the
friends she made on the VFB, FFW, and HCFF lists who participated in
the Courage Swap, which Rick Zieger suggested - Jody calls the 50 fly tyers
who participated in the swap her RAINBOW ANGELS. Believe me, they
made a difference in Jody's bout with breast cancer. BTW, she's been cancer
free now for 6 years. To see the Courage swap flies, cilck on the
attachment..

Have a Goodun !

Re: [VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY

2010-02-02 Thread Don Ordes
Jimmy,

That's part of my plan for this summer- locating my toy-hauler trailer at some
fishing destination where I can get access for the phone and my pc. I'm
thinking of a dish/antenna system like I had down in Moab at the remote plant
site. I can set up the large ATV parking area at the back of the trailer as my
office- drop the back door level, put up the screen, and have an outdoor
office. Sound OK?

Then, instead of working when I want and tying when I want, and fishing when I
can get away, I could be fishing when I want, and then tying for the fishing,
and then working when I can break away from the water. My office-commute will
be on the ATV from the fishing spot back to the trailer.

Wanna join me? Going to have to eat campfire food.

Sorry about missing the daily quote today. Had terrible problems with my

Montana is definitely withing my scope of desireable office areas.

I may have some work up in North Montana (at the C border) that will
necessitate an office away from home, which is definitely an all-inclusive

Glacier Park seems like a nice place for an office...

Would rather have a satellite link-up and a cell booster antenna. That way I
can have almost everything, and TV if I want.

Jimmy,

That's part of my plan for this summer- locating my toy-hauler trailer at
some fishing destination where I can get access for the phone and my pc. I'm
thinking of a dish/antenna system like I had down in Moab at the remote plant
site. I can set up the large ATV parking area at the back of the trailer as my
office- drop the back door level, put up the screen, and have an outdoor
office. Sound OK?

Then, instead of working when I want and tying when I want, and fishing
when I can get away, I could be fishing when I want, and then tying for the
fishing, and then working when I can break away from the water. My
office-commute will be on the ATV from the fishing spot back to the trailer.

Wanna join me? Going to have to eat campfire food.

Montana is definitely withing my scope of desireable office areas.

I may have some work up in North Montana (at the C border) that will
necessitate an office away from home, which is definitely an all-inclusive
write-off.

Glacier Park seems like a nice place for an office...

Re: [VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY- winds?

2010-01-15 Thread Don Ordes
35mph We call that CALM!!! LOL Time to go boating- hurry while the
calm lasts!

Worst winds I got caught in was 100mph out at Alcova Lake.
Chinook wind came through- clear day blue sky- lasted 30 min- seemed like
hours.

Tipped over all sailboats and ran beached boats 40' up onto the shores.
I estimate the waves arount 10 feet. Fortunately I was in my 21' Cruisers,
a cuddy-cabin deep-V hull, and it took the waves fairly well head-on,
but they would have swamped us from any other direction.
Was having a family reunion and had 11 people on the boat, the legal limit.
Got everone into the lee-side harbor and unloaded safely at the dock,
the went back out with my son to rescue swamped boaters.

The wind had picked up to thirty-five miles an hour and all the boats in
Carroll Creek
were being blown from pillow to post. If you've ever stood on the deck of a
bass boat
with the waves hitting you in the knee caps, you know what we were going
through. It
was very rough and just plain scary. The real fun began when I tried to run
my boat up
on the trailer in that thirty-five mile an hour wind that was now blowing
across the loading
  ramp.©

About five minutes later, my ortho doc, (a close family friend),
came in, gave me a smiley frown, read the x-rays and said, and
I quote: Hay Dum Ass, you've fractured and re-fractured this
leg at least twice before. You're lucky you broke it good this
time or no telling how long you'd walk around with this thing
broken! You had a big fish on line, didn't you! Here gimme
that fly rod, (a new bambo I'd brought to show him), You aren't
supposed to bring that thang in here. I did have a big brown, 18
on and readily admitted it. Then he asked, with a grin as big
as Dallas, If you knew you could catch another big brown like
that, but break the other leg in the process, what would you
do? Hell, I'd do it again I winced. Please, now can I have
my new fly rod back? ©

Trout fishing is always the best in the hardest to reach places, those
with the steepest, crookedest,

It's an peach-colored egg-pattern, blushed with a little red, topped

It worked on the Green River below the Dam at Dutch John.
