[VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY

2008-10-24 Thread Jimmy D. Moore
The quote below can be applied to the VFB. The VFB exists because of
Byard Miller. It's his private water, not ours. More than once, in
talking with Byard, he has expressed frustration toward certain postings
on the list. At one point when we were going through a similar
discussion on the list, he said, Maybe it's time that I disbanded the
VFB. I begged him not to and here we are again, bickering about petty
stuff. For you old timers, it's nothing new. We go through this
self-cleansing about once every year or so. I just hope we can live
through this one without Byard having to put his foot down. So, let's
quit our bickering and get back to the simple things that this list is
designed for, the things that have kept our list alive all these years.

I have learned not to go crazy if I hike for a while only to find
someone on my private water.

Few fly-fishing experiences are as thrilling as seeing, stalking, and

RULES, etc. Old Fart Swap - See below. These were listed in my original
post, but evidently some of you didn't read it through. Guess we can
charge that to Old Fart ITIS. :-P

The fly you'd tie would be one of your own design, or whatever,
preferably one of your favorites. Type of fly, trout, salmon, salt,
etc., and fly size up to you. Time frame for flies to me would be
around the first of February, with the usual toe tags, return postage
packaging or pre-stamped return package.

2008-10-29 Thread Jimmy D. Moore
As of 7:48 a.m. CDT, Wednesday, Oct. 29 we have 21 signed up for the

only 4 spots left. So hurry, or get left out. If we don't reach 25
today, I'll cut the swap off at whatever number we end the day with.

Then I'll take the swap off list except for timely updates that might be
of interest to others, i.e. names of Old Fart Flies, etc. I will also
reiterate the Rules, etc. when I move the Swap Off List.

Read my prior emails for RULES, etc.

[VFB] OLD FART Swap Closed 10/29 10:10 p.m. CDT

2008-10-29 Thread Jimmy D. Moore
SWAP IS NOW CLOSED! Communications to tyers will now be off list .

RULES for OLD FART SWAP

Tie a fly of your own design, or whatever. Type of fly - trout, salmon,
salt, panfish, etc. Size of fly is up to you. Time frame for flies to
me would be February 1, with the usual toe tags, (little tags with name
of fly and your name and email address), and return postage packaging
or pre-stamped return package. You may also pass along the pattern and
materials list.

HOW MANY FLIES TO TIE ?? At this point, with 25 in the swap, you would
tie 24 flies to send to me. It'll always be one fly below the total
number, cause you don't need to tie one for yourself.

One last thing I request is for you to let me know the name of your Old

When I go fishing I ... want to get away from it all, for it is silence

Sorry ya'll got a post showing who's in the Old Fart swap and what

the three fishing email lists. I had left them on originally when I sent
the Swap Closed notice. Everything is supposed to be Off List from now on.

My mistake, mea culpa, mea culpa :-[

P.S. To any of you in the swap, please update your tyers email list to
reflect the VFB, FFW and HCFF being deleted from future posts to us in

Trout fishing. One must be a stickler for proper form. Use nothing but
#4 blasting caps, or a hand grenade, if handy, or at a pool well-lined
with stone, one blast from a .44 magnum will bring a few stunned
brookies quietly to the surface.

[VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY

2008-11-05 Thread Jimmy D. Moore
The truth is that live-bait fishing has a long and noble history. Live
bait was totally unknown to the early caveman, who had to make do with a
rather limited assortment of dry flies, nymphs, and a few streamers. One
day, whether out of exasperation or simple impatience, a caveman made a
backcast with a gray hackle he had not bothered to remove from a sage
hen. Instantly, it was taken by a brontosaurus. The caveman was elated
by his discovery, even though it was several centuries before anyone
learned how to take the brontosaurus off the hook.

[VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY

2008-11-19 Thread Jimmy D. Moore

May is when the bluegills on Alabama's Pickwick Lake really turn on.
It's an outstanding time to catch 20 to 30 sunfish for the table in a
couple hours of fishing in the early morning or late evening. Typically,
we catch filleting-sized bream - bluegills weighing between 1/2 to 3/4
pound - with redear weighing up to 14 ounces. These big fish produce a
huge filet. The latter species is the redear sunfish, more commonly
known as the shellcracker. 100 fish days are common.

Donny Lowrie

*

The above lake is where I learned to fly fish. Dad bought me one of
those boxed $10 Japanese made bamboo fly rods and there began my love
affair with fly fishing. I distinctly remember driving through the
Mayfly hatches on the way to Pickwick. They were so thick that we'd
have to stop several times to clean them off. But all that was
forgotton when we got on the water with Mayflies dropping all around us
with the bluegills going ' pop, pop, pop' as they sucked the flies
under. The first time we went we caught 116 bluegills - bream. I'll
never forget the number, for I was the one saddled with the job of
cleaning them! Trout fishing with flies is great, but you haven't lived
until you experience a Mayfly hatch on Pickwick. Wet flies, dry flies,
popping bugs, it makes no difference to the gills.

[VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY

2008-11-21 Thread Jimmy D. Moore

Successful fly fisHing for trout is an act of high deceit; not only must the
angler lure one of nature's subtlest and wariest creatures, he must do so with
something that is false and no good - an artificial fly. Thus fake and sham
lie at the heart of the enterprise. The amount of machiavellian subtlety,
guild and sly deception that ultimately becomes wrapped up in the person of an
experienced trout fisherman is faintly boring to contemplate... . . to be
continued tomorrow.

Fontinued from yesterday.

 . . . . Thus fiendishly qualified for a brilliant diplomatinc career
he instead has time only to fish. So lesser diplomats continue to grope
and bumble and their countries continue to fall into war. The only hope
for it all, I'm afraid, is for the Lord to drive the trout fishermen
into diplomacy or else drive the diplomats to trout fishing. My guess
is that either way we'd be more apt to have more peace: the
fishermen-turned diplomats would hurriedly resolve their differences on
the trout stream so that they might return to their fishing, while the
diplomats-turned-fiehermen would shortly become so absorbed in their new
passion they'd never again find time for war.

[VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY

2008-12-04 Thread Jimmy D. Moore
Ordinarily the man accustomed to a 9-foot fly rod would reduce to one
about 7 feet long and feel that he was equipped for working a small
brook. This, I beg to point out, is only the palest concession to that
kind of angling. If we chop 4 feet off that, however, the remaining 3
foot length will permit casting from almost any position. I use mine
right or left-handed, with the tip pointing almost at the water. Because
of the length and essentially greater line speed, the rod throws tight
loops, which permits casting under obstacles with relative ease. There
is no tendency to hook casts off the target, as you certainly must
when casting with a longer rod in a purely horizontal plane.

[VFB] First fly I tied

2008-12-21 Thread Jimmy D. Moore

My first fly was a bream popper. For my 12th birthday I got a Herter's
Fly Tying Kit with all the tools, plus a bunch of feathers and an
assortment of hooks. But . . . . there weren't any corks, which I needed
for my bream popper. Mom had an old bottle of Castor Oil, which had a
small cork in it. There was only a teaspoon left, so she poured it out
and gave me the cork. ( Yes, I know, cork stoppers in medicine bottles
are way before most of your times.) :-P Anyway, I tied up a neat
little bream fly, painted it yellow, with black doll's eyes glued on.
Caught a lot of bream ( shellcrackers, bluegills, etc.)

Have a Goodun!

2008-12-23 Thread Jimmy D. Moore
A fly fisher who jerks his rod back and forth like chopping wood with a
long handled axe and splays his line and fly on the water with a great
splash, doesn't deserve to catch a trout. Treat your fly rod with
respect. Be gentle with your cast and your fly will light on the water
like a snow flake.

[VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY

2008-12-30 Thread Jimmy D. Moore

Nymph fishermen VS dry fly fishermen

Two good friends go fishing together, one a nymph fisherman and the
other a dry fly fisherman, both believing strongly in catch and release.
Not wanting to get in each other's way they decide that one will fish
upstream and the other down, and at an appointed time, meeting back at
their starting point and tell of their success.

Question 1. Which was more apt to fish upstream and conversely, which
was more apt to fish downstream and Why ?

Question 2. Which one would come closer to telling the truth about his
catch and why ? Notice that I said 'come closer' for most of us
occassionally stretch the truth about our fishing success.

Example: If I was skunked and asked by my Bud, How many fish did you
catch, Jim? and I said, Not many That wouldn't be bald-faced lie,
so there you go. But, If I'd answered 'a few' that would have been
a bald-faced lie.Get the idea ? ;-)

Question 3. Which one was apt to be first to the return point, and
which one would be apt to be late and why ?

Question 4. Which one's outfit, tackle, rod, etc. was more expensive ?

Question 5. Which one would be more inclined to smoke cigars ?

Hope you enjoyed this little exercise. I'm not picking on either, for I
fish equally with nymphs and drys. :-P

Since this is fishing related, feel free to answer ON LIST. Should be FUN !

And they have to be true stories, which has to be a huge challenge,

[VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY

2009-01-13 Thread Jimmy D. Moore
A young environmental engineer I met once, who was wise beyond her years, said
'the solution to pollution is dilution' and she is right, especially with
fisherman. Dilute the number of fisherman on any stretch of water and they all
do better. Dilute the catch limits and they also always do better.

P.S. We don't normally post JOKES on the VFB, FFW, and HCFF fishing e-mail

[VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY

2009-01-22 Thread Jimmy D. Moore
Buck and I fished a couple of miles of Sand Crick together that day,
reminiscing every step of the way over our adventures as kids along the same
crick. We came upon a half-submerged car, a 1937 Packard that someone had
dumped into the crick under the pretext of preventing bank erosion but actually
to be rid of a 1937 packard. Buck drifted his line in through the gaping hole
of the front windshield and hooked a fine Eastern brook out of the back seat.
First time I ever caught anything in the back seat of a 1937 Packard, he
said. I've never been that lucky, I said enviously, but I came pretty close
once in a 48 Hudson.

[VFB] Re:Starting a fly fishing club

2009-01-25 Thread Jimmy D. Moore

Chuck, if you feel proficient enough, you might consider doing a program
at one or more of your Civic Clubs like Rotary, etc. I did this a few
years back, giving a fly tying/fishing demonstration. At the end of the
meeting I had 7 Rotarians come up and ask if I would teach a fly tying
class for them. I did. Upshot is that 5 of the seven are still tying
flies and fly fishing. How do I know this? I'm in that Rotary Club.
You could do a demo and ask any interested folks if they'd like to join
a Fly Fishing club that you're forming. Seems that lots of civic club
members are fly fishers.

[VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY

2009-01-26 Thread Jimmy D. Moore
Choose your fly fishing friends wisely. They can have an effect on how
many and the size of the trout you catch. Fly fishers who spend a lot of
time fishing together will unconciously adopt some of the other's
mannerisms, choice of flies, and casting techniques over time.
Surrounding yourself with great fly fishers who catch a lot of trout
will help you catch more and larger trout. However, does that mean that
while you as the poorer angler improve your fishing prowess, the better
angler's fishing prowess deterioates from watching you? It could be that
as your fishing improves and your friend's deteriorates, he reaches a
point where his fishing begins to improve by watching you the better
angler. If that is the case, somewhere along the line, both of you will
become great anglers. On the other hand, if both of you are piss poor
anglers to begin with . . . .

[VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY

2009-01-27 Thread Jimmy D. Moore
Allowing the fly to sink to the fish's level, the angler makes a
retrieve. The fly comes directly at the fish, which suddenly sees its
approach. As the small fly gets nearer, the fish moves forward to
strike. But the tiny fly doesn't flee at the sight of the predator.
Instead it continues to come directly toward the fish. Suddenly the fish
realizes infinitively that something is wrong, (its never happened
before), so it flees until it can assess the situation. An opportunity
for the angler has been lost.

[VFB] Charlie Bonner Funeral Arrangements

2009-02-05 Thread Jimmy D. Moore

The family is at the funeral home right now, setting up the funeral
arrangements. The lady at the funeral home told me she thought the
funeral would be Saturdary. She'll post it to their website late this
afternoon. I'll check and as soon as it's posted, I'll alert the ya'll
with the particulars.

[VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY

2009-02-06 Thread Jimmy D. Moore
They say that to catch brown trout you have to be near invisible. I
tried that on the Cimarron in 1999. It worked so well that a large brown

[VFB] JFTD Extra

2009-02-06 Thread Jimmy D. Moore

Since I've been out of commission for the last week, here's something a
little extra for you as I start the JOKES again. Believe me, the last
week has been a tough one. On top of the hayfever/bronchitis, the
steriod shot they gave me, to hasten things along, day before yesterday
played hell, giving me a racing heart ahd high, BP, plus I couldn't
sleep night before last after the shot. Finally, yesterday afternoon
the steriods wore off and my BP and pulse became normal 125/70/68. Not
bad for a 71 year old. Jody reminded me that she had the same deal
following a steriod shot a few years back, racing heart, high BP. So,
here's a reminder, some of us are allergic to steriods. Before I
forget, my doc prescribed 100 500 mg Amoxycillin caps for me. I'm to
take 3 per day for a month !!!

Have A Goodun !

A guy walked into the local Welfare Office to pick up his check He

marched

straight up to the counter and said, ' Hi. You know, I just HATE

drawing

welfare. I'd really rather have a job.'

The social worker behind the counter said, ' Your timing is excellent.

We

just got a job opening from a very wealthy old man who wants a

Chauffeur

and Bodyguard for his beautiful daughter.

You'll have to drive around in his 2008 Mercedes-Benz CL, and he will

supply all of your clothes. Because of the long hours, meals will be

provided. You'll also be expected to escort the daughter on her

overseas

holiday trips.

This is rather awkward to say but you will also have as part of your

job

assignment to satisfy her sexual urges as the daughter is in her

mid-20's

and has a rather strong sex drive.

A two-bedroom loft type apartment with plasma TV, stereo, bar, etc.

located

above the garage, will be designated for your sole use and the salary

is

$200,000 a year.'

The guy, just plain wide-eyed, said, ' You're bull-sh!ttin me!'

The social worker said, ' Yeah, well . . .you started it.'

The recollection of what has been and the anticipation of what is to be; the
quiet discourse of men with like tastes, of past successes and of anticipated

[VFB] Re: The lift - The way I do it.

2009-02-16 Thread Jimmy D. Moore

I don't know how others do the lift, but I do it just like I lift my
line for a roll cast. When I get to the 12:00 position, I gently let my
rod down again to parallel and let the line drift down stream again as I
would in casting across a stream and letting the line float down.
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but Hey! It works for me. Close your
eyes, lift your arm while sitting in your recliner, and you can FEEL it!.

raise the fly rod? Slowly? Thanks again,

The game of [nods] is played by tying a reasonable facsimile of the
insect being taken by a trout. Then many variations of this basic
pattern are tied with only slight differences in each of them. These are
in turn cast to a visible feeding trout, and its reaction is noted very
carefully . . . Each fly is cast as long as it receives a nod from the
trout. When it no longer excites any nods it is discarded for a new
variation.

[VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY

2009-03-09 Thread Jimmy D. Moore
In the recollection of the trout fisherman it is always spring. The
blackbird sings of a May morning. The little trout jump in the riffles,
and the German brown comes surely to the fly on the evening rise.

[VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY

2009-03-12 Thread Jimmy D. Moore
Fish sense, applied in the field, is what the old Zen masters would call
enlightenment: simply the ability to see what's right there in front of you
without having to sift through a lot of thoughts and theories and, yes,
expensive fishing tackle.

[VFB] QUOTE FOR THE DAY

2009-03-13 Thread Jimmy D. Moore
I hear what you're talking about, said the wife. But you will make no
impression on Humphrey. As long as the fish rise to his bait, everybody
is what he ought to be. Bless you, Casuabon has got a trout stream, and
does not care about fishing it himself: Could there be a better fellow?'
Well, there is something in that, said the Rector, with his quiet,
inward laugh. it is a very good quality in a man to own a trout stream.

[VFB] Re: QUOTE FOR THE DAY

2009-03-13 Thread Jimmy D. Moore

Gary, you're making me turn green with envy. We have only one bonafide
trout stream in Texas, and that's the Guadalupe near New Braunfels.
It's a tail race fed by bottom draw dam flowing 50 degree water to the
river. As long as the flow is around 200cfs, even in the summer, the
trout live and do well for 10-12 miles downstream. Record rainbow - 8
1/2 pounds.

Must be nice to have a bunch of great trout streams near like you do.

2009-03-17 Thread Jimmy D. Moore
It takes a while to get used to a parabolic rod, but they'll throw more
line than regular rods. A parabolic will definitely make you a better
caster, for it will slow your casting stroke down. This in itself will
improve your casting.
