[videoblogging] Mefeedia site currently broken

2005-08-01 Thread R. Kristiansen

Hey all,

www.mefeedia.com has been down quite a lot lately. I know very well
that Peter is working on it and there is no need to worry, but still:
I hope mefeedia gets back up Soon. I want to get addicted to quoting,
and experimenting with that further.

On another note, Peter, isn't it true that you mefeedia would welcome
more volunteer coders? I am not a coder myself, so I cannot help out
in that way, but maybe someone else on this list would like to help
out in the creation of 'bloglines for video'? I guess Peter also would
accept donations towards buying coder time, if anyone have any $
hanging around, but I guess it is up to Peter to confirm whether that
is actually the case :)

In either case: I am really excited about the recent upgrades of
mefeedia, and I look both forward to the site working again, and
future versions.

Best,

Raymond M. Kristiansen

www.mefeedia.com has been down quite a lot lately.

It's been down yesterday and today, a stupid problem with the host.
I'm sure it'll be back today. I wouldn't say down quite a lot, on
the contrary, and damn fast too, since I switched to Dreamhost :)

On another note, Peter, isn't it true that you mefeedia would welcome

I am looking for coders, that's true. I'm going to put some of my own
cash towards that.. If anyone knows/is a real good PHP/Mysql person
who wants to work on this, let's talk! Thanks Raymond :)

I really think we as a community need to look after each other a bit.
Not just when Chuck and Michael get harassed by someone, but also -
yeah - check up on each other. Be a friendly vlogger neighbourhood, or
 something.

nathan took a break from this list several weeks ago becasue he said
he spent too much time here. so please email/comment to him directly.

i emailed with him this weekend.
his oldest son went to live with his ex-wife.
he still has his other two kids.

the latest videos are not real.
normally i woulnt spoil people's fun...but i dont want people to worry

Make those tutorials, and then freevlog (incorporated, copyrighted and

could link to your tutorial on a FAQ list or something :)

just my take on it :)

[videoblogging] Checking RSS feeds

2005-08-01 Thread Andreas Haugstrup

Checking RSS feeds just got easier. A long time ago Clint sent me some
great code to use on vb.info, but I only got it implemented now.

Go to: URL: http://www.videoblogging.info/tools/checkfeed/

There you can enter the URL of an RSS feed. The script will then check:

 - If the feed is valid.
 - If it contains any enclosures.
 - If the *first* enclosure is a video file.

Hopefully this will cut down on time spent on troubleshooting.

Thank you Clint!

[videoblogging] Re: Internet TV is almost here... preview version of DTV, coming August 9

2005-08-01 Thread cooperwef

Hi everyone,

This is Tiffiniy Cheng from Participatory Culture here. Just wanted to say that we're really
glad this forum exists -- videoblogging is helping to push media into a more democratic
direction, which is amazing and we're excited to follow in the footsteps of your work. We
think it is really important to make the tools that help videoblogging explode as soon as
possible because we think it is extremely important to make internet television as open
and accessible as soon as possible. And videoblogging can be as easy as blogging pretty
soon. And we all know what that means.

We'll be releasing the Mac beta version in a little over a week (http://
www.participatoryculture.org/hype). It should be a pretty good demonstration of the
platform, but it is still just a beta and does not have all the things we want in there. One of
these things is a well-designed interface and that's why we're holding a design contest too
(http://www.participatoryculture.org/contest -- $1000 for winning design interface, $300
for logo, $200 for winning referral via blog or word of mouth) and hopefully we'll be on
track to making something that can support and enhance your videoblogs. Please be
critical of the Mac Beta, but also remember that it's not quite done.

We're really excited to have a full Windows and Mac launch soon, any help or comments
are much appreciated. Updates coming soon.

Hope to talk to you all soon.

  Hi everyone,

Today, Participatory Culture is announcing a 12-day countdown until the
release of a preview beta version of DTV for Mac OS X.

On August 9th, our free and open-source internet TV player DTV will be
available for download, for Mac OS X at first, with a PC version soon
  thereafter.

Read some of our recent press blog coverage, and follow along with the
countdown to the release of the Mac preview version on August 9th.

Later on, we will have a full launch of both the Mac and Windows beta
versions of DTV – but for now, we're really excited about getting the Mac
version off the ground and can't wait to hear your feedback.

There's a world of amazing independent video out there and now there's an
easy way to watch it. DTV is bringing internet TV to the fullscreen -- lean
back and enjoy. Browse the built-in channel guide, subscribe to channels,
videos download in the background, and DTV notifies you when they're ready
  to watch.

Internet TV should be open-source and based on open standards, just like
blogging and podcasting. We're working to ensure that the new mass medium of
internet TV is free, accessible to all, and built with independent voices.

So please help us spread the word by blogging about our new HYPE page, and
check back in 12 days to try out DTV... it's going to be super glue.

Re: [videoblogging] [RSS] Feed is too long?!

2005-08-01 Thread Joshua Kinberg

RSS is not an archive format. It is used to provide recent updates to your site.
This often means that it contains something like the most recent 15-30
entries on your weblog.

As for the description elements, yes you can include the full text
of your entries there.

make my feed detail only the latest 20 posts or something? How would
this effect rss readers such as Thunderbird or Fireant?
 2) Is it not typical to include the blog post in the description?
 3) My site is pretty low traffic ... if MY feed is too big for

Wow, dude. That feed is fucking huge. I think you've missed the entire
point of RSS. Have you used an RSS Aggregator? Check out Bloglines
(http://bloglines.com/). Also, check out other people's RSS feeds for
examples (there's generally a link on the main page of the blog). RSS
is a mechanism of distributing information about new updates to a site
(with the number of posts arbitrarily picked by the publisher, but the
idea being it should be up to the number of posts a person wouldn't have
seen if they hadn't checked your site in a day or two). You've got
stuff going back to 2002. I limit mine to the last 20 posts, including
full text of the postings in the content:encoded tag.

[videoblogging] Press kits collection, anyone?

2005-08-01 Thread R. Kristiansen

Hey all,

Something struck me while watching the vlog entry where Ryanne showed
the two-sided handout that she would give to people at Blogher: I
want to read that!

I want to see the material we give out to prospective vloggers in NYC,
or San Francisco, or Washington DC, or Amsterdam, or Bergen, Beijing
or Sydney. I want to be able to put together a presentation for
instance the Apple store here in Bergen without having to re-invent
the wheel.

I might have missed out on some site out there, but I don't think
there are any collections of material like this (I still keep my
brochure/handout from the Vloggercon back in January (feels like ages
ago..)), and where we can download pdf-files to use in our own event
or tweak to our own use.

I would love to see such a site. Can't we agree that whenever you do a
presentation at a conference, meetup or whatnot, then you post some of
that material on your blog? Then someone could download it, put it on
some wiki, and we will see what wiki system has the best press kits.

I am not at all saying that we should all be a homogenic army of
vloggers with the same pink hand-outs, but it would be really cool if
we could share resources.

Comments?

Best,

Raymond M. Kristiansen

Are there any PHP hackers here that might be able to fix WordPress to
properly deal with enclosures stored via Ourmedia?

See this msg:

 http://comox.textdrive.com/pipermail/wp-hackers/2005-July/002190.html

Right now I use WordPress, a custom cgi to redirect to my videos, and
Ourmedia/Internet Archive for uploading and storage. What this means in
layman's terms is that for me, adding a video as an enclosure to
WordPress is a royal PITA... :(

Can you point me to the enclosure code, Pete? It's pretty
straightforward to implement recursion as long as the PHP architecture
is reentrant.

You're a Wordpress demon, right? If you're hesitant to do it
yourself, that's a flag that it's not so easy...

Cool. I'll attend the session. I am quite surprised that there is nothing about video blogging in the program. Are you going to cover video blogging?

[videoblogging] Re: help inserting windows media player onto blog site?

2005-08-01 Thread David Meade

Hi millie -

At your OurMedia page, you'll see a line of text just beneath your
media file that says This media file's URL: Link

The word 'Link' is a link directly to the media file.

Link to that address rather than the ourmedia page.

Re: [videoblogging] Hi from new member-Question?

2005-08-01 Thread Jared

hi Jeff,

BlogTorrent serves as the base for Broadcast Machine. BlogTorrent will
serve any sort of file(s) via the BitTorrent protocol, but Broadcast
Machine is tailored for videoblogging.

unfortunately, I've never installed nor used Broadcast Machine, so I
can't help you there...

FireANT is for viewing and subscribing to video blogs, not necessarily
posting them (not today, at least).

if I may suggest, please try out Blip.tv - we offer a free video blog
(yourname.blip.tv) and unlimited video hosting, as well as an RSS 2.0
feed with enclosures, all in one neat package wrapped with a bow and
served with a smile.

http://www.blip.tv/

signing up is quick, painless, and free. and as always, there is an
excellent guide here:

http://www.freevlog.org/

looking forward to see what videos you have in store for us!

cheers,

- Jared

I'm new to blogging and I'm looking to vblog, my

Do I want to use blog torrent? and broadcast machine?

Or should I use Fire ant?

 What's the diff.?

I tried to upload broadcast machine to my blog on
blogger but I couldn't figure it out- on the faq page
it says to simply copy the broadcast machine file to
the public_ html page on my website, But I don't know
how to do this! and can't find the info to do this.

I am learning a lot and want my blog to be great, the
learning curve is tough for me right now, I know this
is probably simple to you all, but I've only been
blogging for a couple of months, and any help or
 advice, would be appreciated!
