whether I did, and I have no way of knowing except to go back and try to
figure out what username-password combo I might have used back then. And I
thought that limitation was supposed to be fixed long ago?

In the interests of fairness I'd love to get a clip hosted by Ourmedia onto
that page, but for the moment I stand defeated in my attempts.

Hi. Yes, when you register at the Archive and then at Ourmedia (or
vice-versa), your Archive email address gets saved on your Ourmedia
account settings page. They need to match (the registration emails you
use at both sites), otherwise Ourmedia won't be able to communicate
with the Archive side of things where the media is stored.

I know it's of little solace, but we'll be melding these dual
registration systems into one (finally!) by spring.

If you've spent time at other video hosting sites, you know that
uploading video over the Web is an iffy proposition (one interruption
and it stops and doesn't resume). That's why we offer Ourmedia
Publisher, a downloadable tool that should be used for any file bigger
than 20MB. If your upload is interrupted by Internet traffic, it
resumes where it left off.

Still, you're absolutely right that the site needs a major usability
overhaul, and we've begun that process.

We're always happy to help with any problems you may be having by
emailing [EMAIL PROTECTED] Often, we're able to plop in your
identifier and the media will appear within moments. If you've tried
that (we're overworked and understaffed -- but unlike youtube and
other for-profits, we're all volunteers and all unpaid), you can email
me directly: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Some of the performance issues we've had can be tied to our current
server. We've been promised bigger, better servers by two partners
since last November. They have yet to deliver, but we should have new
servers in 4-6 weeks.

little buggy. I usually end up editing something anyway once I see the
published page even if this bug is not there, just to tidy up how it looks
so it's not a problem for me.

You're absolutely right, it's a bug that's been bugging me for months.
:~) Alas, no coders have volunteered to fix it. But it's at the top of
our to-fix list.

I think IA will be around longer than most of the other free
uploading spaces atm. and apart from a few test personal videos most of my
content is archival/documentation of arts/muisc events or projects so I
don't want to have to reupload them all again in 5 years.

That's what we believe, too. The Archive will be around, possibly for
generations, while the vast majority of the 97 video hosting services
that have followed us in the past 11 months won't be.

Meantime, after we fix our current usability and reliability issues,
we have an ambitious slate of projects to advance the open
media/participatory media movement in the months ahead. As always,
we'd love to hear from volunteers who want to help out in moderating,
coding and designing the site.

Thanks for your patience. There'll be good news ahead. Hope to see you
all at Vloggercon in June!!

Re: [videoblogging] Re: help with Ourmedia

2006-02-25 Thread Deirdre Straughan

Thanks for the reply, but I'm no forrarder in getting a video into Ourmedia, or even knowing what's going wrong when I try. I just tried for the 5th time, this time leaving the license at CC. Clicked Submit, it was Loading for a while, and again I arrived at a completely blank page. The file is only
6.5 MB, so I wouldn't think the upload tool should be necessary. On 2/25/06, JD Lasica [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

Not so much, in my experience. For most of the sites on http://www.beginningwithi.com/vlog/test.html I uploaded directly without need of any tool (always the same
6.5 MB file). There were problems - some of the sites are still in beta - but not related to the upload itself.
That's what we believe, too. The Archive will be around, possibly forgenerations, while the vast majority of the 97 video hosting servicesthat have followed us in the past 11 months won't be.
Generations? That's a very large statement. Even if the Archive itself is around and still contains all the files, we will much sooner than that run into problems of outmoded formats. Who will take responsibility for converting everything into formats playable by systems of the future?
My own gut feeling is that I wouldn't trust anything to be a forever fail-safe archive. Which is fine; I'm not looking for forever. I don't think that my videos are such masterpieces that they really need to be preserved for posterity. And I am deeply dubious about the very idea of anything lasting forever, let alone such ephemera as most of us are currently producing.
(Okay, off we go on a tangent here...) The other night I showed my daughter JD's mashup video. That video as a whole and the individual pieces in it are brilliant - but will they matter, say 20 years from now? If someone had done a similar mashup job on Nixon's speeches back in the early 70s, it would have been screamingly funny at the time - but would many people get it now?
I used to enjoy comedy pieces (played on the radio) in which an interview was conducted where the famous interviewees would respond using lines from then-well-known songs. Who else in this group is old enough to remember Mr. Jaws? (Wouldn't you give your hand to a friend?) Or the political satire in which Henry Kissinger was given the line I like to make the women tremble. (A gold star to the first person who can tell me what song that line came from.)
My point, if I have one, is that perhaps we need to take ourselves a little less seriously. Citizens' media and the democratization of content distribution are extremely important concepts - taken globally. But very little of what is actually being produced is all that earth-shattering. It's long-tail stuff, immensely interesting to a few people, and of absolutely no importance in the wider world. So, personally, I'd be more concerned about the ease of getting it out there than whether it's going to be there til doomsday. But your opinions and needs, of course, may vary!

Re: [videoblogging] help with Ourmedia

2006-02-25 Thread Jay dedman
I aappreciate lize the idealistic aspects of it, but when it's this hard to
use, I wonder how far it's really going towards its goal of making video
distribution easy enough for everybody, including non-techies.
The site needs a good usability review by someone not close to the project -
clearly, something has been missed. I have a suspicion that the bug I found
may lie in the fact that I selected copyright instead of CC, an option that
no normal Ourmedia user has ever selected! grin

Nope.
OM would not kick back a video because you chose to put a traditional
copyright on it.
Just to be clear for people who didn't get the joke.

Also, OurMedia was set up rather quicklyand then has been running
since then.
Its certainly isn't perfect.
those of us involved know more bugs than you can imagine.
Amazingly to me, we still get plenty of media sent through the system.

The good news is that we are quietly working on a redesign.
The original purpose was to provide people with free space to host their media.
but now there are more and more free hosting services around.
Now its more about teaching people about storytelling...and connecting
them with original media they wouldn't find otherwise.
I don't find VideoBomb-like sites useful because it pushes up video
that is already popular.
mainly commercials.

Deirdre's suggestions are spot on.
we need OM to be easier and clearer.
All hail the volunteer army.

Stallman is quite a character in person. I blogged a speech he gave at
a UN meeting in Geneva a few years ago:

Stallman took several Thelonious Monk-like breaks in his
presentation. He would occasionally exercise his left arm by raising
it up and down like he was lifting dumbells. He would yawn and stretch
his torso, then arms and hands, reminscent of Kipling's description of
Father Wolf stretching his paws one after the other to get rid of the
sleepy feeling in their tips. At one point in the middle of his
remarks he paused, announced to the audience, I'm cold, and walked
away to find his jacket, leaving the moderator at a bit of a loss. The
audience took it all in stride, with many people grinning and enjoying
Richard's unusual style.

I just recently got on myspace and have looked around a little bit. I
did notice some film groups particularly related to the Four Eyed
Monsters film which I was looking at information on there. I'll look
deaper at what's going on.

BTW, I've initiated a event called IndieFilmCamp which may be of
interest to you and others involved in indepedent film. It's a
barcamp style event organizing on the wiki at
http://barcamp.org/IndieFilmCamp . Feel free to add ideas, proposals,
and yourself as camper there. The purpose at this point is: To
introduce and involve the Independent Film community to the
capabilites of net media for conversing with a developing audiences,
and for syndicating, promoting and distributing works.

2006-02-25 Thread filmmaker_lynn
Jay,

In the film part, it is set up for people to network and communicate
with other people in the industry from festival people to filmmakers,
editors, actors etc. It is just another avenue where people
communicate. It also is a place that people use to brand themselves in
a sense. Meeting others and getting others to know them and their work.

When you have a community that is drawn together for a common goal, it
is much easier to achieve that goal than on a standard blog where one
has to hope that someone finds them. I think you see a lot of indie
people on there with that strong desire to network, communicate etc. I
have used it for casting, networking around this new doc that I'm
shooting and it has been amazing actually from dealing with subjects,
crew and actors on various projects.

I've also been contacted for projects to collaborate on that are quite
exciting. The blog itself isn't that much different than a normal blog
except for the context that it exists within. This context is for
networking and the blogs tend to be driven towards the project that
you are working on.

In the regular myspace world, not the film or the music, it's just a
place where people are hooking up with old friends or new
friends/dating potentials. All in all it is a pretty amazing concept
that seems to be drawing a ton of attention obviously and has proven
to be a great marketing tool for the music and film industry.

Been to MySpace. Looked around at some MySpace sites. Wasnt impressed
at all.

What I saw was tons of sites with horribly designed pages. Music that
autoplays on load. Garish colors and more goths than I can shake a
stick at.

The local news here in Minneapolis has done a couple spots about
MySpace. None of them all that flattering.

The whole MySpace impression I got was that of a bunch of teenagers
making sites similar to the old Geocites sites back in the day.

All in all, I'll stick to old regular websites.

Danah Boyd does research out of Berkeley, specifically in the youth
social networking space. She had a presentation to AAAS recently
covering MySpace specifically. If you are interested in the phenomenon,

Talk about market research.
this is exactly what i needed to understand.
I needed to SEE what a typical user likes about MySpace.
Dave asked all the right questions.

i guess MySpace provides what i hear a lot of bloggers want.
who's watching me?
how many friends do i have?
we all want an audience.
I know thats why i got involved in videoblogging.
I just wanted to meet other people.

but for whatever reason, MySpace still seems like a dead end.
doesnt seem like it will last.
I like to think that media we create will last...so it means something
in the future.
I wonder if MySpace has that kind of longevity.

[videoblogging] Re: Are any of you Vloggers on the Myspace Film side?

2006-02-25 Thread David Dundas
Myspace has succeeded in providing people with an online identity as a
n easy messaging interface within the Myspace ecosystem. In doing
this, they have grown astronomically. I heard a figure like 10% of all
advertising on the web is on Myspace which almost floored me. So the
traffic that one may receive on Myspace is undeniable.

Indie bands and now idie filmmakers are using Myspace as a way to
reach hundreds of thousands of people about their projects or work.
What I think is yet to be seen is if this frenetic environment that
Myspace has created will appeal to everyone.

As people have said the geocities-like interface is immediately a
turnoff for some. This blog actually articulates pretty well why you
would NOT want to use Myspace
http://blogs.stolenmixtape.com/mix/archives/2005/10/26/myspace-should-not-be-your-bands-only-web-presence/

I think Myspace is great for traffic, but you have very little control
over your blog outside of layout. The traffic you direct to your
profile is Myspace's traffic, some bloggers would like to some day
make money on their blog, and Myspace will NEVER allow for users to
monetize their profiles or anything in those profiles.

Also Myspace is content is not open. There are no RSS feeds to
profiles or content. So syndication outside of that environment is
impossible. We saw earlier this year when Youtube started to grow, and
the embedding of Youtube video grew on Myspace profiles, Myspace
blocked the video embedding code. They only allowed the code again
after Youtube and Myspace users wrote myspace about it. A few weeks
later Myspace released their beta video offering.

So as a content creator I can see why you would be attracted to the
sheer scale of the Myspace network, but I would definitely be worried
about Myspace controlling everything you can do within that network
and your ability to ever montetize that. The average teen doesn't care
about, but I think anyone who has content that matters would.

Don't know if MySpace will last or not, but the way the service brings
tons of stuff together (blogging, buddies, pics, music, videoclips,
etc.) is powerful and things like this, like Marc Cantor's dream of a
digital lifestyle aggregator, are powerful and are the future. I'm
frankly jealous of kids that have this at their fingertips.
