Introducing Kayleigh India Carvin:

http://www.andycarvin.com/archives/2006/06/its_a_girl.html

Born at 10:34pm ET on Friday, June 2, 2006 in Boston, Massachusetts.

Five pounds, 12 ounces, screams like a Beatles groupie, has my hair

before I started losing it, as well as my impatient temperament.

Mother and child are resting comfortably while I obsessively upload

photos to flickr at three in the morning.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/andycarvin

This is the first of what I'm sure will be thousands of videos of

Kayleigh. That is, until she's old enough to hold the camera and turn

it on us. With a vlogger and a documentary maker as parents, you'd

think it would be inevitable. :-)

I'll try to upload more videos over the weekend.

freakin' proud as hell,

andy

Thank you for writing to share with me your concerns regarding internet
neutrality. As you may know, I support net neutrality. The open architecture of the Internet has been
the critical element that has made it the most revolutionary communications medium since the advent of
the television.

  Each
day on the Internet, views are discussed and debated in an open forum without fear of censorship or reprisal.
The Internet as we know it does not discriminate among its users. It does not decide who can enter
its marketplace and it does not pick which views can be heard and which ones silenced. It is the embodiment
of the fundamental democratic principles upon which our nation has thrived for hundreds of years.

  I
have always, and will continue to, strongly and unequivocally support these principles. As I have worked
throughout my Senate career to make broadband access readily available throughout New York State and
our nation, I believe that maintaining an open Internet coupled with more broadband access is necessary
if we are to meet the promise and the potential of the Internet to disseminate ideas and information,
enhance learning, education and business opportunities for all Americans and improve and uplift our citizenry.

  We
must embrace an open and non-discriminatory framework for the Internet of the 21

proposed by Senators Dorgan and Snowe to ensure that open, unimpaired and unencumbered Internet access
for both its users and content providers is preserved as Congress debates the overhaul of our nation's
telecommunications laws.

  Thank
you again for writing about this issue that is important to me and to so many of my constituents. Please

of the Internet. Updates on this and many other important issues being discussed before the United States

If you're on Mac, you may also want to check out Pd (PureData) -- its
similar program to Max/MSP (also developed by Miller Puckette), except
its free and open source.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pure_Data

I had been playing around with Pd a few years ago and OpenGL graphics
capabilities were still pretty new to Pd (check out the GEM extension,
Graphics Environment for Mutlimedia). I'm sure its come a long way and
may be much closer now to Jitter in terms of functionality. Plus if
you're learning, its great because Pd is free and Max/MSP/Jitter can
be expensive. The programming concepts in Pd and Max are almost
identical.

HAHAHA, they do a lot of dissing on the word vlog... and Leo
mentions Andrew Congdon and Amanda from Rocketboom. He also says
this is the first meeting of vloggers.

Leo has a history of misrepresenting information. One time he dissed
Feedburner about publicly announcing his stats, yet he had the
Awareness API running which publizes the numbers. Needless to say,
all the TWiT fanboys took Leo's word and began hating on Feedburner
and canceling their accounts. Very lame.

Anyways, back to this recent incident... Leo goes on to mention
something about doing the TWiT show from the Apple store on Friday.
Is he trying to overshadow the Meet the Vloggers event?

Oh and maybe someone should contact Patrick since he was offended that
nobody invited him to be a media sponsor.

On a side note, Amber and crew will be at Vloggercon shooting and
episode of Torrent...

Viva la vlogs.

Re: [videoblogging] The Shallow Nature of Video Blogging

2006-06-05 Thread obreahny

It was beautifully said.

However, I think most of us recognized this
inherent "creative"/ "life experience" value in vlogging even before
Andrew had so eloquently illustrated it.

The problem is that there now exists a quantifiable
measure for what determines a "good" or "worthy" vlog, e.g., notoriety
in print media and within our own vlogosphere, # of unique visitors, ad
sales, etc.,. In turn, it is because certain vlogs have achieved a
quantifiable measure of worth, that a standard has been created, where
if our own creations don't measure up to it, one is left questioning
the worth or "shallow" nature of the genre.

I dont think that shallowness is
intrinsic to video blogging but rather that it stems from
our approach vs. our expectations. If you expect your vlog to be a
business or a widely viewed entertainment medium, then you cant
approach it from a myopic home movie perspective. Like a business, you
have to focus on what your customers (viewers) would want
to watch- not what you like; you have to be consistent with your
updates-not post video whenever the mood strikes you; and you have to
market your product-not stare at your computer screen waiting for a
viral phenomenon to just happen. If your approach doesnt equate
with your expectations, then its not so much that your vlog is
shallow but rather, that your approach is half-wittedly
taken.

wikipedia
Vlog: A vlog or video blog is a blog (short for weblog) which uses
video as the primary content; the video is linked to within a
videoblog post and usually accompanied by supporting text, image, and
additional metadata to provide context.

Blog: A weblog (usually shortened to blog, but occasionally spelled
web log or weblog) is a web-based publication consisting primarily of
periodic articles, most often in reverse chronological order.
/wikipedia

But is this new?... Video on the Internet has existed for years. I
used to work for ESPN and we would post videos of the medal winning
runs at the X Games. It was timely and cronological. RSS was not
common at that time, but how was that not a vlog? According to the
above definition, it was... and it was also the year 1999 (5 years
before vlogs were invented).

So part of me does not view vlogging as something new. In my opinion,
it is simply video over IP. However, I do think RSS with media
enclosures is a huge changing factor. Does that mean a vlog must have
RSS? We've tackled this debate before and I'd argue it does not.
Another helping factor was the reduction in price for cameras and
bandwidth.

My point is that we didn't really have a name for video on the
Internet before, but now we are trying to label every type of video
with a single name. I'm not sure it is possible or if everyone will
ever agree.

Matter of fact, I'm not even sure it matters. Video is video. Your
method of consumption will probably be labeled by the device you
choose to watch it on.

I'll have to give it a listen tonight, see if I have an opinion about it :)I am sure a ton of people didn't get blogging when it first started gaining popularity, same with podcasting...same with 'recording video and putting it online in a bloggy fashion', or as some of us call it, videoblogging.

[videoblogging] Linux Militants (Was Re: Anyone have Linux?)

2006-06-05 Thread Casey McKinnon

Just wondering if any other videobloggers have been hassled by a Linux
journalist/user named Malcolm Dean about the format of their vlogs...

Although I posted a message here last month asking if Galacticast
works on Linux and I got unanimous responses from the group and other
friends not on the group saying it works fine, this guy is telling us
we should format our stuff in ancient MPEG2 formats!

The thing is; we already have 5 different formats: H.264 .mov, .wmv,
standard iPod .m4v (which is an MPEG compression), 3gp and YouTube
flash. And since I've been told by at least 4 different Linux users
that it all works fine, this guy SEEMS to be acting like an ass about it.

Has anyone else had to deal with this guy before?

That's more than enough formats. Linux users are used to tracking down
alternatives in order to get stuff to work for them. In this case,
several of those formats can be played in Linux with VLC or Mplayer.

There's a larger concept of Rich Media on distributed networks that
videoblogging is a subset. To my knowledge this concept has not been

RE: [videoblogging] Re: vloggercon mention on twit

2006-06-05 Thread Robert Scoble

Nah, there are enough people talking about tech. And there
certainly are enough people talking about me.

We need more videobloggers covering other
things.

One thing, though, I would think about what search terms
you want to own and focus on those.

For instance, are you doing a vlog that focuses on
environmentalism? Well, how come Google can't find it?

http://www.google.com/search?num=100hl=enlr=c2coff=1q=Enivonmental+vlog

One reason tech
blogs and podcasts get popular is there's a good audience online that cares
about that.

What else do people care about? Are you doing a Vlog about
that? Can people find it, how?

I don't know that you need to talk about yourself. I do a
video series for Microsoft that's gotten very popular and I just interview other
people about what they are working on.

Re: [videoblogging] OT max/msp (was Re: question for Macbook Pro owners)

2006-06-05 Thread Jen Simmons
Thanks to you both for the advice. Yes, we've checked out both programs. We are using quite a few Max MSP Jitter plug ins (Boids, SoftVNS), and wanted the more robust / complex tool - plus with our own pair of programmers working with us on this, Max is just what we're using. I'll have to check out Pd and Isadora personally sometime (in the distance future) for next time.

The project I'm working on is an opera, Violet Fire: A multimedia opera about Nikola Tesla. Four projectors, video tracking, all running from one G5. We open July 9 in Belgrade Serbia, and reappear at the BAM New Wave festival in October.

We've been intending to upload video documentation of some of our tests... we just haven't had time! Soon, hopefully -- or later, once the show is done.
back to editing!

The programming concepts in Pd and Max are almost
identical.

Well I would thing giving him a straight answer about why you don't
want to do another format and leaving it at that is more than fair.
If he wants to bug you about it beyond that then he's not being fair
and not deserving of any more of your time.

Question: Do you have separate feeds for each file format you post?
If so how do you do that?

What do the TWiTs recommend? Vodcast?
That is stupid. What the hell is a vod?

VOD is typical industry jargon for Video On Demand

In that sense, Vodcast seems to make even more sense than Podcast,
which is a name inspired by a single brand of portable media players.

Yet I still prefer Videoblog above all the others.

Video podcast? May be good for the mainstream media and newbies to
grasp what it is since the word podcast is being hyped.

Vidcast or Vcast? Maybe, but probably won't stick and Vcast is
 probably owned by Verizon.

IPTV? This has nothing to do with TV.

I think video blog (vlog for short) and video podcast are here to

tend to be more like blogs and video podcasts are the shows you can

if good and worthy are based on measurements that you've mentioned then my site for one, would not be considered either. the site attracts a smaller number, more specific viewer. i don't add to it regularly, and for myself, it feels half baked at times. i'm not that passionate about it, and don't think passion is a valid motivation anyways. i'm really not sure what i want my site be about or why. but i still don't think that the meaning is there unless you put it there yourself either as viewer or maker. i'm saying that much of what i see is meaningless to ME. it often has much more import to the person who did it in the first place. i'm not saying that is wrong. if anything it may get you more viewers if you have the characteristics that attract others to view your work. self confident or even cocky or whatever. you could have some of the worst work online and still be so confident that others will be attracted to your vlog. if you don't give value or meaning to your OWN work then you are forced to live with that fact that all we really do is eat, sleep, reproduce, and then die. that's quite painful by itself. without meaning. you don't need me to validate your work at all.

However, I think most of us recognized this
inherent creative/ life experience value in vlogging even before
Andrew had so eloquently illustrated it.

The problem is that there now exists a quantifiable
measure for what determines a good or worthy vlog, e.g., notoriety
in print media and within our own vlogosphere, # of unique visitors, ad
sales, etc.,. In turn, it is because certain vlogs have achieved a
quantifiable measure of worth, that a standard has been created, where
if our own creations don't measure up to it, one is left questioning
the worth or shallow nature of the genre.

I don't think that shallowness is
intrinsic to "video blogging" but rather that it stems from
our approach vs. our expectations. If you expect your vlog to be a
business or a widely viewed entertainment medium, then you can't
approach it from a myopic home movie perspective. Like a business, you
have to focus on what your "customers" (viewers) would want
to watch- not what you like; you have to be consistent with your
updates-not post video whenever the mood strikes you; and you have to
market your product-not stare at your computer screen waiting for a
viral phenomenon to just happen. If your approach doesn't equate
with your expectations, then it's not so much that your vlog is
"shallow" but rather, that your approach is half-wittedly
taken.

Is there any reason they wouldn't just transcode WMV or QT?I know some of the other watch Internet video on your TV services use Windows Media.TV Tonic and DaveTV for example.I guess it depends on what kind of content they'll be offering. If they're just inviting a select few net video producers, they can ask for whatever format they want.

As a TiVO owner and vlogger, I do wonder how RB got the relationship with
TiVO to do that and why TiVO seems to be playing wait and see on going
further with vlogs when they already package a podcast client with the
TiVO Series 2.

A major reason I don't watch more vlogs is because I have to use my

That was only after people had started to complain, but the podcast

Adam Curry always referred to the iPod platform beginning with Daily

VOD is typical industry jargon for Video On Demand

In that sense, Vodcast seems to make even more sense than Podcast,
which is a name inspired by a single brand of portable media players.

Yet I still prefer Videoblog above all the others.

The whole name bashing is very weak...

Blog is short for web log.
Vlog is short for video blog.

Video podcast? May be good for the mainstream media and newbies to
grasp what it is since the word podcast is being hyped.

Vidcast or Vcast? Maybe, but probably won't stick and Vcast is
   probably owned by Verizon.

IPTV? This has nothing to do with TV.

I think video blog (vlog for short) and video podcast are here to
stay. I do differentiate between the two though. In my mind, vlogs
tend to be more like blogs and video podcasts are the shows you can
only find in iTunes. Just my 2 cents.

Re: [videoblogging] vloggercon mention on twit

2006-06-05 Thread Jay dedman

Vloggercon got a so-so mention on Sunday's This Week In Tech podcast:
 http://twit.tv/56
(it's about two-thirds of the way through). Mostly it was just making
fun of how the word vloggercon sounds.

it is a funny name. It was also a joke.
During the fall of 2004, we were a funny email group talking about
something that no one was doing. Someone suggested we should all meet
up. late one night, a drunken Adam Quirk said we should call it
Vloggercon. and so we did.

i think we still a funny email group.
Just more people are doing what we're doing.
most people dont even know who we are.

if anyone knows how to contact TWITsend them an invite.
or email me offlist with their contact info.

Jay

[videoblogging] BART on iPod

2006-06-05 Thread Markus Sandy

A shout out to all vloggercon travelers with iPods.

I just found a really cool page on the Bay Area Rapid Transit site that
has maps and schedules for iPods (and possibly other devices).

I made a screencast.

http://vloggerconstories.blogspot.com/2006/06/bart-maps-for-your-ipod.html

In case you don't know, the BART subway is a great (and inexpensive) way
to get into town from either airport.

Also, you can find out when other vloggers are arriving:

2006-06-05 Thread Jay dedman

We are streaming both main rooms at Vloggercon for those people who
cant make it to the event.
(we're actually almost sold out, so it'll be for the locals that cant get in).

in the big room, we are setting up a 3 camera shoot with a switcher
and everything.
But we need 3 CAMERAS.
please email me off-list of you have a simple video camera with RCA
