Re: Force rebooting of iPhone - Was Re: is it normal
I use the home and power buttons when my IPod is unresponsive. Otherwise, to restart it if something's behaving strangely but not freezing its functions I do the following: press and hold power button until VO says slide to power off. Once I power off, I wait a couple of seconds and then press and hold the power button again. I then wait a few minutes until VO comes up speaking. HTH, Teresa Visualize whirled peas. I personally have not looked up or researched whether or not it's a good idea to force a reboot via the power button being pressed multiple times, but on the surface it just seems silly and not safe to me. At least when you do the power button/home button for 12 seconds, it's giving the iOS system a chance to try and do what it can so that files and data are not being accessed while the phone is forced to reboot. This is why it's probably a several second process. Additionally, it could be that it's on purpose so you don't accidentally reboot your phone without meaning to. An Apple support person is the one who told me that the home and power buttons simultaneously for 10 to 12 seconds reboots the phone and properly restores the driver stacks. From my timing of both restarts, the reboot takes longer for booting up than the power cycling for booting up. To be precise, the higher level support specialist told me to first turn the iPhone off then on, and once it has come fully on, do the reboot. Crashing your springboard is not a forced collapsing of the iOS platform; the springboard is one part of the iOS architecture. It's the part of iOS from which apps are launched. It does not store any critical user data. I think there are a fair few misconceptions about this topic on list. I don't mean to be argumentative but it is important that people understand them, and that if you have a theory (such as that data corruption could occur) that you make clear that it is just that--a theory. Re: IOS development
All of this chatter about programming reminds me that I have been wanting to ask a question. I consider myself to be reasonably intelligent, but the little programming I tried to learn became a bit confusing in trying to remember all of the syntax etc. THis was a really long time ago when I tried to learn Pascal. In any case I would love to learn objective C. So, what is a good book that can help take the uninformed to informed. :) In other words how does one get started and especially in understanding classes etc. I'm sure I could run about the web and look at all sorts of sample code, but I believe you need to have a foundation to build on. I'm probably more interested in development from the angle of trying to help developers make their apps accessible. I do not see myself developing apps for sale. :) My full-time job keeps me fed, housed, and able to afford apps. :) Any advice would be appreciated. I realize this is not a developers list but my interest is in furthering the goal of accessibility for iOS and Mac apps. Indeed, is is possible to write apps in C++, however, you will need Objective-C for the Cocoa Touch Framework anyway. Greetings Jan --- ColorVisor - The app to identify colors. Re: app: ariadne?
Hi Krister, I am sure others will jump in and correct me if I'm wrong but as far as I know the feature simply allows you to track the distance to a favorite more easily by placing it on the Ariadne main screen. This way you would not have to reopen the favorites list (or keep it open) when you wanted to look at the information for a particular point of interest. There really isn't any kind of route planning at all in Ariadne GPS at the moment. Advantage or disadvantage when jail-breaking an Iphone?
What happens when you attempt to return the phone or get a new one and move the data from one to another? Will vendors take them back if they are jail-breaked? Thanks. Fred Olver - Original Message - From: Raul A. Gallegos r...@raulgallegos.com To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Thursday, May 31, 2012 6:03 PM Subject: Re: itunes alternatikve Hi, not exactly. When you jailbreak your phone, you are not limited to the sandbox experience. Apps can interact a lot more with each other and you can do some neat things which Apple hasn't allowed. One of the simplest things you can do is theme your phone. So, if you want a Star Trek theme for your phone with badges, icons, and sounds which are all Trek-based, you can do that, but only if you jailbreak. -- Raul A. Also, if you jailbreak your iPhone, and call for tech support and mention that it's jailbroken, they probably won't help you. However if you jailbreak your iPhone and ever have to have it serviced, a restore of the software will remove the jailbreak. All that being said, there are 2 apps which come to mind which might fit the bill for you. 1. Filer. This app doesn't require a jailbreak. It allows you to upload files, such as music, documents, or whatever to the iPhone. Then from the app, you can manage or do whatever with these files, i.e. open them in other applications, ETC. If you just tap the music files you upload, you can listen to the music that way. However this isn't the same experience as using the built-in Music app of the iPhone. Basically, everything you upload to Filer will stay in Filer, but no jailbreak is necessary. 2. PWN Tunes. This is a jailbreak only app. Basically when you connect your iPhone to the pc, you can go to sever folders inside it, just like a usb stick. One of these folders is called my music and if you copy music there, you can later listen to it from the iPhone Music player. When you want to remove it, just connect it to the pc again and remove it from that same folder and it will be gone from the music player. Good luck. -- Raul A. Gallegos I'm not 50. RE: Restoring from iCloud
You can choose which backup you want to restore from, but that won't restore selective contact, since those are stored on what I'd assume to be a separate part of iCloud, that when you sign in with your iCloud ID, everything that's stored there gets pushed to each device. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Les Kriegler Sent: Friday, June 01, 2012 8:08 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: Restoring from iCloud I thought one could choose which backup to restore from in iCloud. Hi, No, but if you factory restore, then there is no sign of a jailbreak and you will be fine. I was wondering first of all how much spacing between the fingers was possible and apparently the answer is, a lot. What I have found most useful now, and this does work on any of the phone's edges so that portrait or landscape modes shouldn't affect this methid, is to use two fingers near the edges of the screen. Pretend the phone has a set of railroad tracks on it and that each of your fingers represents a traing going in the opposite direction. As long as both fingers move, the gesture seems to be picked up consistently. I just tried this way of changing rotor settings with a person who swore that rotoring was never going to be a useful gesture because of the frustration it seems to bring to many novice IOS/VO users and the result was that all of the rotor's settings changed correctly on the first and every try. Re: The Rotor, a possible replacement gesture
Hi Krister I believe that the reason that your attempted pinches are being interpreted as the rotor is that you are changing the angle your fingers are on a bit when you move them apart. I know you don't have any problems with the rotor but I will just explain a little to setup the pinch gesture and maybe others who are having problems will find it helpful. Think of it like this. Imagine that you have your phone straight in front of you and it is lined up squarely. Now imagine you put two fingers On the screen so that they are directly opposite each other, e.g., so that if there was a line of text on the screen they would be both on the same line but at opposite ends.. Now draw a line between the two fingers. It is the direction or orientation of this line that is important to the rotor gesture. If when you move one or both your fingers, the direction of the line between your fingers changes then the rotor will be invoked. So it doesn't really matter which direction the line starts before the movement what matters is that the direction changes. For example the arm on a clock face as it moves around the face of the clock changes the direction it is pointing even though one end is stationary. Also in this case it doesn't matter how far apart your fingers are or if this changes while performing the gesture, all that matters is the amount of circular movement the line under goes. Understanding this gives you control over how fast you can move through the options on the rotor. Now coming to the pinch gesture we need to ensure that when we move our fingers we don't invoke the rotor gesture by changing the direction of the line between the fingers. The easiest way is to probably go back to the imaginary line of text on your screen with each finger on the text. start with your fingers close together and move them apart so that they stay on the same line. It might be easier to just move one finger away from the other one whilst keeping one still. This also slows down how fast you select things. I actually have an audio demo of how to do some text selection on my website at iblindtech.net Go to the audio demo's page and there's a file you can download. The site needs some work yet but this one demo is there. Sitting, stretched out on the couch, reclined in bed etc. I think I probably have more difficulty with the four finger tap for getting to the top or bottom of the screen. The main downside is the Tuner button is in the center of the screen, about 1 inch from the top of the phone, and if you hit this accidentally, you will need to find the done button on the bottom left to return to the favorites page. With no voice over it would be difficult for a totally blind user to avoid doing this. If you are like me and listen to one radio station all the time then you are in luck, the app retains the last station listened to, so all you would have to do is double tap on the icon and the iFm will start. And with voice over on, there is no danger of accidentally hitting the tuner button. IMHO definitely worth the 20 bucks! Check out Quick Record
Hi all. This is an app which is free right now. I found it from the News Store app. In any case, what's really interesting is that when you record, the recording is done as a .mov file. This means that the recording is saved in the camera roll. Furthermore, this means that if you want to do audio-only recordings for uploading to Youtube, you can do it with this app since it's technically a video, but with audio only. I don't know what it shows on the screen, maybe a blank page, or a logo of some kind, but it's not a bad concept I think. I did a short recording and confirmed that it went to the camera roll, and I was even able to email it to myself. The app has no settings to mess with, and the recordings are clear. Only one button to start and one to stop. That's about as simple as it gets. The information is below. The app is called Quick Record and it's by Lin Fei. The stations are listed in numerical order on the favorites page. Re: The Rotor, a possible replacement gesture
You've desribed what works for me as well. The thumb and index finger pretending to turn a knob don't cut it. Brian On 5/31/12, Jon Pierson joncpier...@gmail.com wrote: Hi, I have watched many people having inconsistent results using the rotor and I myself have not had the silly thing act the same way from session to session. Now maybe it's something with the callouses on my abused fingers but for whatever reason, I have not found rotoring to be to my liking, until today! So maybe some folks want to give this method a try and hopefully the results will be as rewarding as they have been here so far. Now I may have to try that pinching gesture folks talk about next. For other people, who asked about good objective-c and IOS development books, I would recommend safaribooksonline www.safaribooksonline.com It is not free,, something like $40 for the unlimited access, however really worth it! They have a lot of books about objective-c, Mac and IOS development, and also many, many other subjects. Most of their books are in accessible format (you need to contact them and ask to configure accessibility), only very new books might be not accessible, presented as images. Another option is www.books24x7.com They don't have the monthly option and only anual subscription, which is around $499 or so. However they have all books accessible with no exceptions, you just need to access the library as textonly.books24x7.com Both of those libraries work fine with iPhone safari browser. All the best and good weekend! Igor. Cara Quinn wrote: Hi Igor, on the Apple developer site, you can find a sample app called UICatalog which shows all of the possible UI controls created purely in code without Interface Builder. You can also do a Google search for coding tutorials in Objective C and XCode which should yield some results to show you how to start off with XCode without relying completely on IB. There are actually sighted devs who prefer code over IB, and certain behaviors of controls are only possible in code. So the material is out there. HTH! The headset plugs into the bottom of this device. Under my video magnifier I was able to set up presets and I can run the app via memory with voice over off. IMHO definitely worth the 20 bucks! iTunes Music Sync
Hi All, Hoping someone might have come across this before an have an answer… I have just over 500 albums in my iTunes library, in the past, and I cannot remember when the problem began to occur, but, I used to be able to happily navigate the four tables within the Music tab of my iOS device within iTunes, which would allow me to choose what music to sync to my phone. For clarity, this is found by using the Source List, selecting the iPhone in question, moving to the Music tab, and interacting with the area that allows you to choose what music to put on the device. There are four tables in here, the two I use regularly are the artist and album tables. In the past, I could happily navigate these without any issue, and check the item I wanted on the phone. Now though firstly very frequently Voice Over starts its ever present busy, busy, busy, and when it does not, within the tables, which are alphabetically ordered, I can only manage to drop down as far as the rough end of B, before for an inexplicable reason, the Voice Over cursor throws me back up to somewhere near to the end of A, or, in other instances early B. I cannot seem to move beyond this, anyone experienced this at all, and, more importantly, does anyone have any thoughts as to how I can get around this issue? In case it is relevant, this is on an iMac 27in, running Lion and with the latest build of iTunes. This problem though existed on my 2010 iMac which I recently sold and now is present on my brand new one too. many thanks. The case of Digit-Eyes....
There was some discussion on one of the threads here after our April release about scanning with Digit-Eyes in a case and having problems. Based on some work I did today with one of our customers, we now understand the issue and it is an interesting one. What it turned out was happening is that the case is designed in such a way that it tends to block the light detector for the phone. As a result, the flash is on all the time and there is a LOT of reflection from many scanned surfaces. This was because of the combination of the ambient light plus the bright light of the flash. So it wasn't so much that the case was blocking the camera -- it wasn't (this was a very good case -- the Otterbox defender). But it WAS blocking the light detector and that was, indirectly causing the problem. We'll be modifying the documentation on our website, but I thought that those of you who were involved in the original report might find it interesting to know what the cause of the failure is. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: CD barcode scanning app
Digit-Eyes will read the barcode and probably has the information. If it does not, it is likely that the scan will trigger a spider to find it within 24 hours or so. I'm not sure, however, that UPC recognition is the solution to this problem. This is because the barcode is on the case and not on the CD / DVD, so once the CD is out of the case, it won't be associated with the UPC. So a product that reads UPC / EAN labels isn't going to be all that useful if the CD is on your player and you are trying to figure out which of the 5 CDFs in the tray it is. Two possible solutions: 1. use LookTel, oMoby or one of that ilk of recognizer product and record information for the face of the CD. The downside is that there may be recognition issues and if you record your own CD's, they are all going to look alike. 2. Alternatively, you can use the feature that is free on the Digit-Eyes site to create some text labels or audio labels and put them on the side of the CD where the printing is. Or if you are so inclined, you can buy them off the DE site (but we prefer that you print your own.) All you do is to scan the label and you'll hear what the code is. If you want to use text labels, the reader is free (that is Digit-Eyes Lite -- otherwise known as DELite). If you want to record labels, that is part of the full product and it is sold on the iTunes store. Here is a case study / example of how it works; http://www.digit-eyes.com/media.html For the record (heh), Gary is a real person and this was a real example -- except for the fact that he drinks Scotch, not lemonade... Re: Yes, You can listen to F M broadcasts on your iPhone
Brett, there is no bug in this radio. It works perfectly with voice over turned off. Because the interface is graphic based, it can not work with voice over and was never intended to. I bought this device to test its useability, because others on the list wanted a FM receiver to attach to their iPhone. As far as your family members setting up your iPhone, the iPhone, when voice over is turned off, is extremely intuitive. That is why it is so popular. Jailbreak app launcher?
Does anyone know if there exists some sort of app launcher type program for a jailbroken 4s? I haven't jailbroken yet but may do so this weekend and one functionality I'm really looking for is the ability to easily launch apps from something similar to the sort of launcher apps found under Android. I have ten pages of apps so far and finding the app I want is getting to be difficult. I realize I can use Spotlight to find something but I'm looking for something more straight forward kind of like the item chooser but not limited to the current page. Is there such a beast around? Hi, If you are on the screen with a compose button, just double tap that, then find the text field that has the word to before it and double tap and put in the person's name, etc. Then, find the spot that says Sent from textfree and double tap to get it in edit mode. That is the default signature unless you changed it. Then, the send button is kind of where it is on regular text messages, above the o and p, kind of. Very odd that your phone rings. I could only get it to ring if I turned off the cell data and only had Wi-Fi running, then rebooted the phone. I've sent a note to them, but I won't hold my breath for a reply since, as you point out, it is free, which often means less performance/support. I can say toggle bluetooth and bluetooth will toggle from on to off or off to on. Re: The case of Digit-Eyes....
Hello Nancy. I'm not sure if you are aware, but there are 2 kinds of Defender cases for the iPhone 4. There is the 4 and then there is the specific 4S one. The one specifically for the 4S is backward compatible with the 4 and the only difference is that the camera port is a larger hole, shaped like an oval and this allows for the camera to work better. If a 4-only case is used on a 4S, the camera port on the case is more rounded and too small. If you already knew all of this, my apologies. -- Raul A. I am sorry I deleted the note asking for more details on this and the original subject line. This is taken from the Amazon site. The device is about the size and shape of a pedometer. It comes with a clip to attach to your clothing, etc. or can be hung around your neck. This would not be my go-to choice for listening to music or radio, but it is handy. Re: TextFree on an iPhone 4S
I had not had any experience with incoming calls. I just tried it with mixed results. I tried it three times in a row calling it from my other phone. The first time it worked, however after I disconnected on the calling phone, the textfree continued to ring for about 30 seconds. It did that each of the three times. If one tries to answer the incoming call while it is still ringing but the caller has hung up, it will go to a connecting message for a few seconds and then drop and go back to the TextFree screen. So that's ok, not exactly perfect, but ok on that. My mixd results were that one of the 3 atempts TextFree did not ring until the rings had completed and sent the calling phone to voicemail. Then TextFree started ringing. Not reliable for incoming calls if you actually wish to answer them. Probably fine for voicemail. Works for outgoing calls and works for texting. I suspect it may, and I say may, have to do with how the app is being alerted to incoming calls and that may be using push notifications in some way and the performance of how quickly those push notifications are received may not work for incoming call necessary responsiveness. Receiving a ttext in 2 minutes is fine. Receiving the notification of the incoming call 2 minutes later doesn't work so well. On 6/1/12, Raul A. Thanks! I'll give it another try. For what ever reason, it kept wanting to call the person I was attempting to text. LOL! Actually, that's how I figured out that it would ring, because the person called me back. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Richard Turner Sent: Friday, June 01, 2012 8:13 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: TextFree on an iPhone 4S Hi, If you are on the screen with a compose button, just double tap that, then find the text field that has the word to before it and double tap and put in the person's name, etc. HTH! Thanks for that, Tom; maybe that will work better for me; I do have some nerve damage, and it seems a little awkward and difficult to do with one hand, especially while holding the phone. I usually use my phone in portrait mode and have locked it in portrait mode as I prefer it that way, even for typing. I place my phone on a stable surface, then, depending on which way I want to turn the rotor, I'll place my index fingers on the left and right side of the phone and move each vertically in opposite directions at the same time. If I want the rotor to turn clockwise, I'll move the index finger on my left hand upward while moving the index finger on my right hand downward. For counterclockwise, I'll move my left index downward while moving my right index upward. Simple as that; works like a champ. Tom Tom - Original Message - From: Jon Pierson joncpier...@gmail.com To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Thursday, May 31, 2012 8:52 AM Subject: The Rotor, a possible replacement gesture Hi, I have watched many people having inconsistent results using the rotor and I myself have not had the silly thing act the same way from session to session. Now maybe it's something with the callouses on my abused fingers but for whatever reason, I have not found rotoring to be to my liking, until today! So maybe some folks want to give this method a try and hopefully the results will be as rewarding as they have been here so far. Now I may have to try that pinching gesture folks talk about next. Re: YouVersion Question
Hi: Mantis Bible Study is a free app; however you have to purchase some content. They have concordances dictionaries, commentaries, and different versions of the Bible. The verses and words in the Bible are linked. You can use the corcondence and dictionaries to look up content. You can make notes, bookmark verses, email them, etc. I bought the New American Standard Bible with Strongs concordance for $30. Due to the links, reading with speech can be choppy. The link is: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/quick-record/id469617143?mt=8ls=1 Take care all. -- Raul A. Re: creating an apple id has an image-only captcha
Wow, that must be new. - Original Message - From: Raul A. Gallegos r...@raulgallegos.com To: ViPhone Users List viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Friday, June 01, 2012 9:59 AM Subject: creating an apple id has an image-only captcha Hi all. I was helping a customer create an Apple ID for use with their iPhone. Since they were not comfortable yet in doing this themselves on the phone itself, I figured I'd create the Apple ID for them on http://appleid.apple.com. However I discovered that there is a captcha when filling in the form and this captcha has no audio alternative. So, I wasn't able to complete the Apple ID sign up process. Just thought I would pass this along to you guys. -- Raul A. Gallegos Trouble in marriage often starts when a man gets so busy earnin' his salt, that he forgets his sugar. Caveat on the Griffin extended Length charging/syncing usb cable.
This cable has a rather large plastic collar around the metal sleave that plugs into the iphone end, and thus might not fully insert when using an otterbox (or knock off) double layered case. I'm hoping I can get a refund for it, as I paid with a card, at the Apple store. Egun On, Lagunak! (Basque for G'day, Mates) Louie P.
