Jail Breaking, What Does This Mean?

2012-06-10 Thread Arnold Schmidt
Being new, I ask: I think jail breaking a phone means that one can install
apps onto it that are not approved by apple. What is ssh? Most importantly,
will this void my warranty, or will apple deny me updates because they think I
have an illegal phone? I do not think one can get updates for an unlocked
phone, I may not be correct about that. And I assume that jail breaking and
unlocking are not the same. Thanks for clarification.

HOW TO SSH

2012-06-10 Thread Tracy
Hi list

Maybe this is a stupid question, but which clients are accessible to SSh into
my phone with? Most of the guides I read recommend WinSCP. I manage to put in
my IP address, user name and password, but what then? The program doesn't seem
accessible after that.

Kind regards
Tracy

Re: Slightly confused, how does one get to jailbreak app voice activator interface?

2012-06-10 Thread James Mannion
Thanks for the reply for sure. I did want to let you all know I
figured out my issue with the voice actions and being able to get to
its settings after purchasing it in Cydia. It was that I had not
activated the install after the purchase. This is my first couple of
hours in playing with anything jailbroken and Cydia. Then it took me a
minute because Ihad to realize that it wanted me to activate the
confirm button on the screen where it lists everything. I have no
problem with any of this, actually the interface is kind of cool in
that regard, but I had to figure it out. The least fun part was
getting voiceover to read the paypal page that came up in the purchase
process. Voiceover does not like that apparently large page and it is
sluggish to react and sometimes you get nothing and then a couple of
the delayed reactions. That combined with not being familiar with what
they wanted me to do on that screen to begin with was not so fun. I
figured it out.

2012-06-10 Thread Joseph Lee

Hi,
Perhaps restarting the SpringBoard (tapping power button five
times) shg allow the change to take effect.
A tweak is, as suggested, additional (or extended) functionality
for existing apps. For example, there is a tweak out there which
enables file upload/download for Safari, changes the signal
strength on wireless networks to show decibel values instead of
strength bars and so forth.

Hi,
Maybe someone can point me in the right direction. I purchased
and
cydia said voice activator was purchased. It does not have a
home
screen icon. Holding down home to have voice control come up
does not
produce anything additional or different that I am aware of.
There is
not entry in the main settings app. I could not find anything
within
its page on Cydia to double tap on to bring me to any kind of
setup
for this package. The answer to my question may have to do with
how
tweaks work since there is no home screen icon to get to them.
That is
also a point I am not certain of at this point. How does one get
to
tweaks installed or even delete them for that matter? It called
this a

package and I'm not sure if that is important to differentiate.

Thanks,

Re: several i phone questions

2012-06-10 Thread Andy Baracco
As far as making your greeting, the first time you do it you must do it on
the phone, but i found that the mic picks up Voiceover, and you will hear it
in your greeting. But after you do it the first time, you can call your
number from another phone, and change the greeting to get a clean recording.

you double tap this edit button each message will have a delete flag

you are finished the edit button is now a done button. If you have
wifi turned on and you are not in range of your network or any of your
established networks and the phone sees wifi networks available then
you will get that annoying popup box that asks you to connect to a
wifi network when you do anything that accesses the internet. There is
a cancel button at the bottom of it. To avoid the popup in the first
place, turn off wifi in settings when you are not using it. I hope
this helps. If it is not quite clear I will be happy to clairify.

Is it still possible to save and later use SSH blobs to reinstall an IOS version?

2012-06-10 Thread James Mannion
Hi,
I was wondering if it is still possible to save SSH blobs when
jailbroken of course and then later be able to use them if necessary
after the desired version of IOS is no longer the current version? So
after say IOS 6 comes out and if I need or want to restore 5.1.1 and
maybe its jailbreak is there still a way to save things and position
myself to be able to do that? I saw an app listed on applevis called
ishshit and it said you can have the file emailed or it can back them
up on Cidia. That seems clear enough, but how would one access them to
actually use them then? Is this a process that still works?

Thanks,
Jim

I know there are some movies you can only buy and some movies you can rent or

Hi Tom,

I think Craig is referring to Dean Martineau's Accessible World Tek
Talk podcast from the end of May. I'll post their feed, since this is
rather hard to locate and was also changed some months ago:
feed://accessibleworld.org/taxonomy/term/16/all/feed
I'll try to copy the link, but you may have an easier time using the
Tek Talk archives feed, and then navigating to "Accessible World Tek
Talk presents Dean Martineau, Using the Safari on the iPhone"
Here's the direct link:

Re: How to go No Mail?

2012-06-10 Thread Sieghard
Hi Raul and others,

I think people often ask the same questions over and over instead of
checking the archive because they may not be profficient enough on the
web to quickly find this information. I am not saying this is an
excuse, anybody who is afraid to look for something in the archives
which he or she knows has most likely been discussed should maybe
consider taking the time to learn. In this case I had also immediately
replied to both Jane and Debbie directly with instructions on how to
simply log on to the Viphone list site, go to "Edit my Membership" and
select the "No email" radio button, then press "Save these settings",
I even provided the appropriate shortcuts which are common to most
screenreaders like "r" for the radio button and "b" to find the "save
these settings" button. I didn't post this because I didn't think I
needed to add to the list traffic with this, Esther's method is more
general as it applies to all google groups and I don't answer people's
questions in order to solicit their gratitude, but I never had even
just a brief acknoledgement from either Jane or Debbie that they
received my message and were able to achieve what they wanted based on
my instructions. All I can say is that it's probably good that I am
not a Moderator, you guys are more forgiving when it comes to all
these "Thanks", "What does this app do" and so on posts. I know there
are new people joining constantly, but as the list matures and as the
archive topics grow so should its content. I also have a busy schedule
and being a digest subscriber another pet peeve of mine is the fact
that sometimes you have literally pages and pages of old messages in a
reply because people don't bother pressing "Control+A and "Delete"
before they reply so that all of these old messages are cleared out.

Regards,
Sieghard

Re: Is it still necessary to take steps to change root password after jailbreaking and how do we do it?

2012-06-10 Thread Ben Mustill-Rose
Hi,

Its only an issue if you install openSSH which doesn't get installed
by default when you jailbreak. If you do install it and you want to
change the root password (Which is a good idea), just ssh into your
phone and type
passwd
and follow the prompts.

Cheers,
Ben.

3. I was out today and couldn't read my mail as I always got the

I downloaded two apps, one of them is the type in braille app. I
downloaded them with i tunes. After that what do I do as they are
definitely on the computer in itunes?
I've gotten a lot figured out so far but there's still lots to learn.
Oh how do you get that sent from my i phone out of the message and put

about changing it. It said to google to find out how to change it. I

Hi all,

I have a question regarding Siri.
How can I change Siri's replies to my queries from text to voice
responses?
Presently, whenever I ask a question to Siri, the reply comes in the
form of a text message which is read by VoiceOver.
So, how can I make Siri speak aloud her responses to my queries?

And, secondly, whenever I ask a question to Siri, it says 'you said
blah blah' and then it gives its response.
So, what should I do to ensure that Siri directly answers my questions
without repeating what I said?

Your help would be much appreciated.

re: Looktell Apps Do Not Work Accurately for Me

2012-06-10 Thread Steve
BlankMy experience with the Looktell Money Identifier mirrors Anna's
experience precisely. The first version recognized bills almost
instantaneously. The upgreded version and/or the upgrade to IOS 5 has
slowed things down considerably. I am still using the same phone and case,
and pictures are fine, so it shouldn't be a camera lens issue. I have tried
identifying currency in normal room lighting and with brighter lighting, but
it doesn't seem to resolve the sluggishness issue. Interestingly, after it
recognizes the first bill, it does get a bit faster with subsequent bills,
but nothing like it was on its initial release.

Take my advice, I don't use it anyway.

Hi Grant,

I just tried Looktel Money Reader, which I hadn't used for a while. It used
to recognize bills very quickly, but that doesn't appear to be the case any
more for me. I have an iPHone 4S. What I found works reliably is to hold the
camera over the bill, about six inches away, and hold it still for 5 or 6
seconds, possibly a little longer. I hope this works for you.

Re: Questions about Siri

2012-06-10 Thread Brent Harding
That explains then how this probably happened with my old phone and its bad
volume controls and got restored from the Itunes backup on this one.
Resetting the settings to default would likely do it too, but that probably
clears all apps' settings, meaning some will forget the cookie that lets me
avoid security questions on each use with a partially inaccessible remember
device button.

Your help would be much appreciated.

if Siri didn't repeat them you wouldn't know if you were calling the

How can I change Siri's replies to my queries from text to voice
responses?

Presently, whenever I ask a question to Siri, the reply comes in the

So, how can I make Siri speak aloud her responses to my queries?

And, secondly, whenever I ask a question to Siri, it says 'you said

So, what should I do to ensure that Siri directly answers my questions
without repeating what I said?

Jane, if you had time to write the message about how you don't have time
to read a page, you would have had time to press Enter or double-tap on
a link to read an archived email page. Sorry, but your below message
doesn't make sense to me. After all, the whole reason for archiving
messages is so people on the list don't have to constantly send the same
message over and over. Good luck.

Changing the VoiceOver voice

2012-06-10 Thread Rahul Bajaj
Hi all,

I have asked this question many times before, but have never been able
to follow the instructions that others have given.
I want to change the VoiceOver voice from British to American English.
In order to do this, I went into VoiceOver and selected the language rotor.
Then, I selected U.S. English by double tapping it.
After that, I selected 'language' in the rotor.
What should I do after this?
Please shed some light on this matter.

Best,
Rahul

Questions about Siri

2012-06-10 Thread Rahul Bajaj
Hi all,

I have a question regarding Siri.
How can I change Siri's replies to my queries from text to voice responses?
Presently, whenever I ask a question to Siri, the reply comes in the
form of a text message which is read by VoiceOver.
So, how can I make Siri speak aloud her responses to my queries?

And, secondly, whenever I ask a question to Siri, it says 'you said
blah blah' and then it gives its response.
So, what should I do to ensure that Siri directly answers my questions
without repeating what I said?

Your help would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Rahul

Re: Turning VO on or off

2012-06-10 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

If a sighted person sets up your device, and turns VO off at the beginning of
set up, toggling voiceover on/off will no longer be the default action for
triple press of home.

Re: Is Cobo books accessible and easy to use?

2012-06-10 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Kirsten,

You buy books from the Website. I have an account, but when you click on the
link "Buy this book", you get taken to a page where you can sign up for an
account.

There's no obligation to buy books regularly and the prices are good.

Cheers,

Anne

Status report doesn't fetch updates

2012-06-10 Thread Alexandra - Keinohrhasenfan
Hi,

statu sreport doesn't fetch my updates anymore. The error occured about two
days ago, and neither shutting down the iPhone nor clearing the app switcher
didn't help anything. Whenever I double tab and swipe down at the first
entry of my feed, nothing happens, and I don't get the usual notification
that my status updates are being loaded. Any ideas?

Best,

Alexandra

Hey all. I found this app from a tweet earlier today. It's by the same
developer who makes the Who Unfollowed Me app which is planned on
getting better accessibility in the future. This one adds a signature to
outgoing texts. Note that you need to send the sms text message from the
app itself for the signatures to work. It also includes several
templates of quick responses.
