Re: anyone use type in braille app?
I agree with all this, explanations and all. As stated, type all you like in this, then have it copied to clipboard so you can go paste it in anything, including search fields if you like. - Original Message - From: Sandy Finley finleykn...@gmail.com To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Friday, June 15, 2012 12:06 AM Subject: RE: anyone use type in braille app? Rebecca, I wrote an explanation of Type In braille that some apparently found helpful. I am pasting it below in case it helps you. Please let me know if you have questions. It takes some getting used to but I think that for us dedicated Braille readers it's great. Sandy First off you have to turn the Braille cell on its side in your mind. Don't think of it as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6; rather, 1, 4; 2, 5; 3, 6. You need to tell the app what you want to do with all three of those rows for each letter. A one-finger tap in a row says you want one dot; two fingers says two dots in that row and a three-finger tap says no dots in that row. So the way he describes A initially is: 1 one-finger tap for the top row One three-finger tap for the second row One three-finger tap for the third. But all you really need to do is the one one-finger tap for the top row, and then flick one finger to the right. This flicking gesture tells Type-In-Braille that you are done with that character. This speeds you up considerably. B is two one-finger taps followed by a one-finger right flick. C is a two-finger tap, just like a Braille c, followed by the right flick. It takes some practice; K, for instance, is tricky. But I also like the way I can edit in it, going back and forth, one letter or word at a time. It tells me what I am deleting, unlike VO on the phone keypad. Type-In Braille is meant only for typing text which is then selected and copied into something else, like an e-mail or Facebook. You cannot do e-mail addresses or type in search boxes. I am so far finding this faster than typing on the keypad on the phone. Sorry for this long explanation; HTH. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Rebecca Ilniski Sent: Tuesday, June 12, 2012 9:12 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: anyone use type in braille app? Re: Navigon
Hi Mike, Navigon is OK to a point it is not as good as a trekker breeze. But it is very handy if you want to know where you are. Although it doesn't speak the names of streets as you are going along, but, you can put a postcode in and it will take you to your destination. Its not perfect by any means but its better than having nothing at all. Whether it will improve as time goes by who knows. I agree with Raul, Navigon is a good app and works reasonably well with Voiceover, but it has a bit of a learning curve and I think most people who post on here that it's useless and is not Voiceover friendly just haven't taken the time to play around with it. Below is a bit of a write-up I sent to somebody else a while ago and maybe you find it useful, I am giving some examples which were relevant for that list member and I haven't changed them because it really doesn't matter which places I use as an example. Also, the descriptions of screens and settings I use are based on the latest version of Navigon. Before you give up on Navigon it really is important to understand the app. As somebody pointed out before, you can input a route by entering in an address or a POI which typically is a restaurant, gas station, store etc. If you want to enter an address you can’t enter the entire address at once, e.g. you can’t just type 1234 Washington Street into the edit field, it is a multi-step process where first you pick the Map (if you have several installed you may have to pick Florida etc.). Once that is done it asks you for the city. You live in Pensacola, so if you start typing “Pensa” Pensacola should show up in a list, the fewer letters you type the more options are on the list, for example, if you live somewhere where you have towns like Clifton, Clydsdale, Clearwater, Clearfield, Clearbrook, if you were to type “cl, all of these would be in the list, if you type “c l e”, only the 3 choices starting with “clear” show in the list and if you type “clearw” only Clearwater would be left. You can, at any time, check the list and double tap on the city you want if it is in the list. Once you do that the next screen comes up and this says “Street in Pensacola text field”, as long as you selected Pensacola as your city. If you keep flicking right you see a list of all streets in Pensacola sorted alphabetically. Double tap the edit field so you can start entering text and enter, in your case, “St” or “Star” and then make sure “Stark Avenue” or “Stark Ave” is listed and double tap to select it. Once you see your street on the list, double tap it and now you have the option to either enter a house number or cross street/intersection. VoiceOver announces “Text Field is Editing, Character Mode, No/Intersection in Stark Avenue”. Once again this is assuming you selected Stark Avenue and that your rotor setting is set to character, not word. If you flick right, you’ll find a list of intersections listed and if you double tap on one it would navigate to that intersection. Anyhow, enter your house number and press the “Done” button at the very bottom right of the onscreen keyboard. Now the very top left option will read like this: No. Back Button This means if you double tap here it will go back one screen back to where you can enter the number. Pressing back on that screen will go back to where you can enter/select the street name, back again will go to the city etc. If you flick right once you will have the “Start Navigation” button. Flick right once more and it will read you the full address with city, zip code etc. that you entered. Press “Start Navigation”, then flick right on the next screen, here you have your second “Start Navigation”. If you flick right again here (you would have to do this fairly quickly, it will give you one or more distances. These are the possible routes you can select. If you press “Start Navigation”, it will select whatever preference you have chosen, e.g. Shortest, Fastest, Scenic etc. This is somewhere in Settings and I typically have this set to “Shortest”. If you don’t do anything for maybe 10 seconds, it will start navigation automatically based on your preferences. Now start walking and it should start giving you voice announcements on where to turn etc. If you touch the screen at the very bottom just up from the Home Key (where you normally would touch to unlock your phone), it may say a street name and typically this is the name of whichever street you turn on at your first turn. Flick left once here and it will give you a distance and that is the distance to that turn, if you double tap the distance it repeats

Re: Points Plus Calculator On Sale
hi, good luck with weight watchers. it is a matter of finding someone to talk to, who will not feel that because the pocket guide is in braille or large print, the company has made its products accessible. based on what you have said, i will try this app. On Jun 14, 2012, at 10:04 PM, Eileen Misrahi wrote: For those who are seeking a way to track their points and more, you may be interested in this app. Point Calculator Plus Tracker iTrack Bites Pro Greg Ellis $1.99 (50% off) through Father's Day weekend). Finally, for the most part, it is VO accessible. The unlabeled buttons were in calculating the points. I needed sighted assistance to indicate how the buttons were arranged. Here is the configuration of these buttons: first row going from left to right- Protein with an edit field and then carbs with an edit field. The next row across from left to right consisted of fat with an edit field and then fiber with an edit field. The third row had only one button, which said bytes with an edit field. The other area that had unlabeled buttons was in the activity calculator. From left to right the buttons represented one's weight with an edit field and the time with an edit field. The selection for the level of exercise was accessible. There is a pocket guide, which listed all of the foods with their points and a labeled button to add it to the daily point total. I explored the Add button, which allows one to access their log action page. Here one can view the used weekly bites, add to their log, search the pocket guide, and a check list area. Because I haven't really begun using this app to track my points, I can't report back on how accessible it is. However, it does look promising, which their web page is not. I have been after Weight Watcher's since 11/2010 to make things more accessible to us, with no success. At least, those of us who are visually impaired or totally blind can use this life plan better than ever before. I am going to contact the developers and see if they will label the buttons that are not, and then this will be an awesome app. I still have some bones to pick with Weight Watcher's, which has just launched a new pedometer (not accessible) and a contest that the visually impaired cannot participate in, but that is for another list to assist in changing their ways. If you are a Weight Watcher or thinking about getting involved with their latest life plan, I would consider purchasing this app. It is their best weight plan yet and it is tied to the glycemic index for those who need to watch their glucose intake. iPhone on Verizon: Yea or nay?
Hey all, Before I say anything, I want to stress that I don't want a shooting match about Verizon or anybody. What I'm asking is this: My mom has asked me to price Verizon's plans and phones. I've been wanting to get an iPhone, but T-Mobile doesn't offer it for whatever bizarre reason. Maybe my question is really about GSM versus CDMA. I travel internationally periodically, and I'd like to keep options open in case I get a job abroad. Obviously Verizon doesn't work abroad, but I'm wondering if it'd be wise to go with them domestically being that they don't use sim cards. With GSM phones, you can unlock them and get a sim card for whatever city in whatever country. I hope that I haven't confused anyone. Now start walking and it should start giving you voice announcements on where to turn etc. If you touch the screen at the very bottom just up from the Home Key (where you normally would touch to unlock your phone), it may say a street name and typically this is the name of whichever street you turn on at your first turn. Recorder suggestions
Hi everyone, I'm looking for suggestions for a very simple but good recorder that can transfer directly to DropBox. Although DropVox does the job very well, it doesn't have a pause facility and this really annoys me, so I'm looking for just the addition of the pause facility but not much more complicated. Any suggestions would be most welcome Carol P -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: iPhone on Verizon: Yea or nay?
You may want to wait as new pricing plans have been announced by Verizon. From what I understand, the plans will offer unlimited minutes and unlimited texting, and the more devices you own, the cheaper it will be. I called when I heard the announcement on Tuesday, the day the announcement was made. It was suggested to wait until the end of June when the plans take effect. Apparently, the reps knew about as much as the public did, and training was to be provided on the plans. So I'd suggest checking back around July 1 for specifics on their new pricing plan options. By the way, for existing customers, one does not have to give up their current plan. Well, I don't know. We have two data plans and three lines on our current plan. Upon first look, the rep with whom I spoke said that if we were to change to this new plan, our cost would be a little lower. We have a 700 minute plan now. We don't used all of our peek minutes now, so unless we would save on this new plan, we will keep what we have. If you want to enter an address you can't enter the entire address at once, e.g. you can't just type 1234 Washington Street into the edit field, it is a multi-step process where first you pick the Map (if you have several installed you may have to pick Florida etc.). Once that is done it asks you for the city. You live in Pensacola, so if you start typing Pensa Pensacola should show up in a list, the fewer letters you type the more options are on the list, for example, if you live somewhere where you have towns like Clifton, Clydsdale, Clearwater, Clearfield, Clearbrook, if you were to type cl, all of these would be in the list, if you type c l e, only the 3 choices starting with clear show in the list and if you type clearw only Clearwater would be left. You can, at any time, check the list and double tap on the city you want if it is in the list. Once you do that the next screen comes up and this says Street in Pensacola text field, as long as you selected Pensacola as your city. If you keep flicking right you see a list of all streets in Pensacola sorted alphabetically. Double tap the edit field so you can start entering text and enter, in your case, St or Star and then make sure Stark Avenue or Stark Ave is listed and double tap to select it. Especially with streets it is important to pick from the list since you never know if the complete name is Stark Ave, Stark Avenue etc. In some towns you may have the same street name with a W or E at the end for West and East, but if you typed the name spelling out West it may not recognize it because it only wants W. Once you see your street on the list, double tap it and now you have the option to either enter a house number or cross street/intersection. VoiceOver announces Text Field is Editing, Character Mode, No/Intersection in Stark Avenue. Once again this is assuming you selected Stark Avenue and that your rotor setting is set to character, not word. If you flick right, you'll find a list of intersections listed and if you double tap on one it would navigate to that intersection. Anyhow, enter your house number and press the Done button at the very bottom right of the onscreen keyboard. Now the very top left option will read like this: No. Back Button This means if you double tap here it will go back one screen back to where you can enter the number. Pressing back on that screen will go back to where you can enter/select the street name, back again will go to the city etc. If you flick right once you will have the Start Navigation button. Flick right once more and it will read you the full address with city, zip code etc. that you entered. Press Start Navigation, then flick right on the next screen, here you have your second Start Navigation. If you flick right again here (you would have to do this fairly quickly, it will give you one or more distances. These are the possible routes you can select. If you press Start Navigation, it will select whatever preference you have chosen, e.g. Shortest, Fastest, Scenic etc. This is somewhere in Settings and I typically have this set to Shortest. If you press Start Navigation, it will select whatever

Skype -- Two Problems
I have the latest version of Skype on a 4S. I am using credits to make local calls. The first issue was present with the older version of Skype. When connected in a call and entering multiple digits to navigate menus, after about a dozen entries nothing is accepted. I still hear the tone, but the entry does not work. My second issue is with the latest Skype. I thought this had been corrected and is why I finally updated versions. The end call button does not work. I was finally able to end a call by disabling VoiceOver and tapping until I got the right button. Are there fixes to either of these problems? All thanks for suggestions. Hi Simon Racing Post is very accessible. It gaves you the races by meeting, or in time order, whichever you prefer. And within each race, it gaves form info, jockey, trainer, odds etc. The William Hill app is also very good and allows you to bet on other sports as well. The Racing UK app can also be linked to a William Hill account and it gives tips for each race coming up. Especially with streets it is important to pick from the list since you never know if the complete name is “Stark Ave”, “Stark Avenue” etc. In some towns you may have the same street name with a “W” or “E” at the end for “West” and “East”, but if you typed the name spelling out “West” it may not recognize it because it only wants “W”. If
Re: Accessible stopwatch/timer app
Sorry to revive an old thread, but I'm also looking for a countdown timer app with a feature that alarmed doesn't have. I'm looking for a countdown timer that will automatically announce time remaining at various intervals; say 5 minutes, 1 minutes, 30 seconds, 15 seconds, and every second between 15 and 0. The talking timer app will do this, but it's voice is very quiet if I'm listening to music or voiceover. I also checked applevis with no positive result. Is anyone aware of a countdown timer that will automatically announce how much time is left in a countdown at various intervals? Any suggestions welcome! Re: Accessible stopwatch/timer app
Hi Jim . Talking Timer volume can be turned up in settings. It uses the same volume slider as the ringer and alerts. Go to settings and then sounds, then set the ringer and alerts volume to the level you wish. There is also a switch to allow you to change with buttons. The downside, of course is that you are also adjusting your ringer, so remember to reset it, unless you run it at 100% like me. Hope this helps, Chuck On Friday, June 15, 2012 10:27:46 AM UTC-7, Jim Barbour wrote: Sorry to revive an old thread, but I'm also looking for a countdown timer app with a feature that alarmed doesn't have. I am not finding the Safeway App , just something called Pavilions. To the person using grocery pal, if you want or need something at a store that has no specials that week, is there a way to bring up store items? RE: Safeway Grocery Store App
Oh, well, then you cannot probably answer my question in another message. My nearest local store, Frys, has no specials and yet it would be nice to find a listing of what they have so I can create a short list and text to a friend who can pick up what I need, however nothing is there. Could try for another store but already have a couple of things at Walgreens I wanted and Frys is right near. Any other grocery apps work for us easily, there are a ton but I was not willing to spend money if it was not going to work, but loads of free ones also. Sorry, the following is just my opinion. I'm not getting money from Jan or other people related to him, have nothing to gain from Colovisor app and or its staff. I believe that Jan is doing something important for us trying to give us an helpful tool. Moreover, he is here, to answer all our critics, dubts and messages, both good and bad... and I think it's very rare among developers. He tries to gather all the suggestions and he promessed to keep them in mind for further releases. He is blind and develops applications... an activity very interesting that might be efford for all of us. My opinion is that... we should be more fairer with him. Re: Ring tones without using iTunes
I use CopyTrans Manager it works well for me, but I cant find anyone to script it for Jaws or NVDA. it seems to work OK using System Access To Go. here are my instructions for NVDA: I have used NVDA 12.2 and Copytrans manager 0.978 to add music and RingTones to my iPhone without installing iTunes. please note that if you do not have iTunes on your PC, you will need to install the copytrans drivers. the links are below. the zip file contains a mp3 demo, copytrans manager.exe and some instructions. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3387062/NVDA_CopyTransManager.zip the drivers can be downloaded here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3387062/CopyTransDriversInstaller%20v1.013.exe If theres anyone who can script NVDA to read the text in the list views, please give it a try. This is the best free program to manage iPhone iPod or iPad without installing iTunes. Connect iPhone to PC. Start CopyTrans Manager, If it does not lose focus, NVDA should announce Main Tab. wait about 12 seconds to allow the program to connect to the iPhone. From the main tab, press the Tab key 4 times to focus on the list of media such as audio ringtones books. NVDA may speak the first item on this list only. using the arrow keys will move the high lighted item, but will not speak it. dont worry about it. just press the applications key and up arrow to Add, it is the second option from the bottom. this should open a window allowing you to browse for music to add to your iPhone, iPod or iPad. This window should act as a normal browse window. so select the files you wish to add and enter on them. now back on the list of files that NVDA want speak, just exit the program, you will be asked to save changes. Re: does This Exist?
yes, it does and it is called a docking station. Make sure to read the description closely if you are buying such a thing from ebay. I have been sold something in the name of a docking station in the past that did not charge the unit. It just had place to adjust the iPhone. I now have a JBL On Time Micro Speaker System which is compact and sounds great. It charges all kind of iPods and iPhones, and is also Great for using with a computer or other mp3 players using an auxiliary cable. It comes with a remote control but costs about $200. Re: does This Exist?
They certainly exist. I have one made by Gear 4. It plugs into a mains outlet and is a desktop docking station. The nice thing with this one is as soon as the iPhone is docked it plays anything you have in your music library on the phone. Re: Ring tones without using iTunes
I don't know about getting them on to the iPhone, but I did find a very accessible converter program, for those of you who have a set of mp3 ringtones you want to use on your iPhone. it is not free, but in my view, well worth the money, as you get the full file, none of this messing around with having to select bits of a file to convert, or a 30 second only limit rubbish. this can be found at: http://www.mp3-m4r.com/dlmmc and it will cope with fairly large batches of files, it worked just fine when I chucked 162 files at it for example. file accessibility, i.e dropbox, etc?
I'm having trouble telling dropbox what directory my files are in that I want stored on the server. My laptop doesn't have enough memory to store the files, so I have a usb external hard drive. I have the 50gb account that I got last year because I thought I could use it. My laptop is an older model and doesn't do wi-fi verry well. My question to you all is, is there a usb or wi-fi drive that I could take on the road when I want to listen to old tv shows, old time radio, or my own music? I've seen some on amazon, but not sure if they work with voice over well, I didn't see many accessory reviews in the applevis information. Editing text in iPhone
Hi all, I often get really confused when I try to edit the text that I've typed. For example, when I want to edit a text message, I swipe down with one finger and VO reads the text character by character. Now, if I want to delete a character, I double tap the delete button. So, sometimes the character that VO last spoke gets deleted and at other times the character which was immediately before the character that VO last spoke gets deleted. So, how exactly does this work? Let's say I've made a spelling mistake and have written my name as R A H O U L instead of R A H U L. So, where should I press the delete button to delete the O? Thanks in advance for your assistance. Best, Rahul -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the VIPhone Google Group. Re: does This Exist?
Yes, it will fit the dresser. It's compact with two speakers built in to one unit. Between speakers on the left and right is the station to place your phone/ipod.Sounds great. Comes with a remote. Is portable with some effort. The unit takes three AA batteries that are useful if you lose power. . As I said it can work as a speaker for your computer and other mp3 players. Mine did not come with auxiliary cable but you should be able to purchase it if you plan to play other devices. AM and FM work great. I don't use the antanaes that come with it but if you have poor reception you can use them, separate antaena for AM and FM. It has an alarm clock and it can play your favorite station or song from your iPhone/iPod at the desired time. But it is not really accessible so you will need some help to set it up. Basic functions are pretty accessible without any help. - Original Message - From: jessica Diaz To: viphone@googlegroups.com Sent: Friday, June 15, 2012 4:35 PM Subject: RE: does This Exist? Re: Recorder suggestions
Hello Fi, List Recorder has many different recording formats to select from. I use M4a but there is wav, and several others. You can easily rename the recordings. You can also utilize a very strong organizational structure. The app is designed for the visually impaired so there are no accessibility issues. It can be used as a simple recorder but once you start using it I suspect a user will want to use the advanced features. Eric Caron On Jun 15, 2012, at 11:02 AM, Fi wrote: . Hi. Re: Editing text in iPhone
If you are moving forward in the text, or flipping down, when you hit delete it will delete the character last spoken. If you are moving backward through the text, or flipping up, it will delete the text to the left of the character last spoken. Re: does This Exist?
There are lots and lots of options as far as speakers are concerned. Doc's as they are called can go from anywhere from about $30 on up to the one made by Bose for about $400, some have clocks and some don't, so you have lots of choices. Most run on AC power, and most do not run on batteries. Afew will have remotes which will allow to control them remotely. That's about all I can tell you, so I hope it helps. The best way to find out more about them is to go to a big box store and look at some on the shelves and see the differences. Good luck. Also, there is an affordable item sold by atguys here in the states for about $40 which you hook up to your stereo and access via blue tooth menu on your phone. It is battery controled and the batteries last up to eight hours. It does not have an alarm, but your phone does. Sounds like it might be cheeper to buy a pogoplug and turn the usb drive you already have into cloud storage for your IPhone. Navigon - Stuck in Map Manager
I've upgraded Navigon. When I first started Navigon after the upgrade, I was presented with the map manager screen. I selected two maps -- or attempted to select them. Then tapped update. Nothing appears to happen, even after quite some time. I have about 203 MB of maps to install, many megabytes of memory available, and a decent high speed wireless network. On the Map Manager screen I find these buttons: Info, Update, Later, Deselect All Maps (which is a toggle with Select all. These buttons are followed by a list of states and territories. Toggling the Deselect/Select All button does not change the download byte count. So, right now, I can't get to any other part of the application and I can't get Navigon to download maps. I will appreciate any help anyone can offer. Thanks. Maps), Files Required. Re: Editing text in iPhone
I'm not sure this will help, but I found out the other day that Linux and the Apple products use a vertical cursor that appears between letters, while MS products use an underscore that appears under a letter. I realized this when I was looking through my ChromeVox options, and realized I could change the cursor from the Apple style to the Microsoft style. Once I changed it to the Microsoft style, editing in Chrome worked as I was used to in Windows. Prior to that, it was the same as what I experience on my iPhone. I'm not sure if there's a way to change this on the iPhone, but through trial and error, I discovered the same tips that have already been posted. On 15/06/12 16:01, Chuck Dean wrote: Yes, as above, make sure you are going in the right direction. When I first got my iPhone I thought the edit function was junk until I realized my mistake. Chuck On Friday, June 15, 2012 1:49:54 PM UTC-7, Rahul Bajaj wrote: Hi all, I often get really confused when I try to edit the text that I've typed. Re: does This Exist?
Yes, local store do sell plenty of them. Often you would discounted ones too. Last time I checked Target had a 20 dollar off on a Phillips docking station. It was for 59 when the original price was 79.
