anylist grocery list

2012-09-24 Thread Dave Bahr

Hi folks,

does anyone use the anylist grocery list ap? I tried to share a list
with my girlfriend and voiceover is only reading me some of the items on
it as I scroll through it. For the ones it's not reading me, I have to
expand each one and then the item will come up with the info about it
where I can add a note. If I just scroll through, I'm greeted with a
flick sound but no item name until I click on the expand button. I don't
think it's an icon or picture on there, as the other things can be read
fine. Any help on this is appreciated, or a rec of another ap where you
can share grocery lists that is more accessible. thanks,

Is this also contributing to why I am not getting notifcations?

RE: Is there a feature in ios 6 that will tell you when you last charged your battery

2012-09-24 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello Jen,

As Christopher indicated, the battery level indicator is on the right side
of the status bar.

If you want to know how many hours you have used your iPhone since the last
charge, go to Settings, General, Usage. Here you find the following
information:

Storage: this gives you the amount of total space used and total free space
on your iPhone

After that you can see how much space is taken up by music, ringtones and
all your apps.

The next heading is iCloud and here you see your total amount of iCloud
storage, 5 Gb unless you purchased more, and how much of that space you are
using.

Below that is a Manage Storage button where you can indicate which apps
you want to sync to iCloud etc.

After that comes the next heading, Battery Usage.

Here you can turn Battery Percentage off or on, this is irrelevant for
Voiceover users as Voiceover announces the battery percentage in the status
bar anyways.

Below that you find a heading called Time since last full charge. This
again is broken down into the following:

Usage: the number of hours and minutes you used your phone since it was last
fully charged.

Standby: the number of total hours and minutes since your last full charge.

Below that is one more button, Cellular Usage. Here you have a heading
Call Time which gives you the total accumulated time of phone calls in the
current period and for the lifetime of your phone. Below that is a heading
Cellular Network Data and this gives you the amount of sent and received
data in Megabytes. At the very bottom is a button called Reset Statistics
and this allows you to set the current period call time and data usage to
0 so you could do this each month on your billing date and that way keep an
eye on how many minutes you used and how much data. Of course this is not
broken up in incoming and outgoing minutes or daytime and weekend minutes
etc.

If you want that kind of detail you have to buy an app like VoiceMan or, for
data usage, DataMan or WiFiMan. These apps are accessible and allow you to
set your billing date so the app automatically zeros out the gathered
statistics on the first day of your billing cycle. I should say that I
assume Voiceman and WiFiMan are accessible, I have only used DataMan which
is accessible and the other 2 apps are from the same developer.

There are also battery usage apps out there, but I find the information I
can see under Usage is enough for me.

Regards,

Sieghard

RE: Deleting using the on screen keyboard

2012-09-24 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Jen,

Same as always, tap the delete key once and let go, this will delete the
first letter or I guess last letter you wrote, then since focus is now on
the delete button you can double tap and hold and it will delete fast and
until you let go.

Only difference really is that before when you found the delete key and let
go it wouldn't do anything, now it deletes a letter and I guess before one
could find the delete key and hold it and then split tap with another finger
to delete multiple letters. This is now like pressing the backspace key on
the computer in rapid succession, you can tap the delete key and lift, tap
it again and lift etc. You can do this as fast as you like, just have to be
careful you come down on delete every time which means don't lift doo high.

Re: Downcast vs iOS Podcast Client

2012-09-24 Thread Neil Barnfather - TalkNav
I didn't say that no-one had it, nor that they could not offer feedback, just
that they specifically had not been asked to test it by Apple on the Voice Over
front.

So they may have had iOS6 legitimately from Apple, weeks, months ahead of the
rest of us, but, that they got it from Apple through the paid developer service.

That means they get the software, and yes, can offer feedback, but, that Apple
did not invite them specifically to do so.

This isn't to say that Apple don't listen to any feedback they give, but
simply, that these people have chosen to pay for the right to do so, and do not
necessarily represent the full range of power iOS users.
On 24 Sep 2012, at 02:58, James Mannion mannion...@gmail.com wrote:

IOS voiceover beta testers? If they are interested in developing to

IOS beta testers. Back in the time when the Voiceover on podcast was
put out, those guys said they were voiceover beta testers and beta
tested IOS versions. Has Apple eliminated this valuable testing in the
name of keeping things all secret or some other reason? I also thought
some on this list even last week had said they were testing iOS for a
while, and not just the ones that grabbed the version that was leaked
on the 12th or soon there after either. Can anyone confirm this?

 Sieghard,

To be honest it just smacks of Apple's complacency in the iOS field, they
have Voice Over beta testers for OSx, but, none for iOS.

You have to join their Developer team for that, a paid experience, and one
that per say does not make you a Voice Over beta tester, just a beta iOS
tester, and not even that really, you're just a developer.

I believe this is why we have odd Voice Over bugs in iOS more so than OSx,
as Apple do not have folk who use it regularly testing it, and those who do,
test the areas they are interested in, and not a full range of features.
Yes, this is a generalised statement, however, knowing that apple does not
have Voice over iOS testers in terms of beta testing tells me a lot.

This is fact before anyone says, ah well I know x, or y, I have been told
categorically by very high level persons that to get a hold of iOS to test
you have to be a developer, and then the only feedback they take on board is
by way of your remarks, not a full beta testing team. This is not the case
with OSx which they have a proper team for and allow measured tested
 feedback with.

may not want to delete an episode because what happens if I want to go
 back
to an earlier episode to find something again. I am able to delete single
episodes in Today in iOS Podcast by doing the pass through gesture and
 then
swiping across them left to right similar to how you would delete songs
prior to the Action rotor, the Action rotor is not yet implemented in
Podcasts. In any case, if I have to delete one episode at a time how long
 am
I supposed to delete stuff, there are now 241 episodes of Today in iOS
 and
what if you are a new subscriber to another Podcast with hundreds of
episodes? I guess it's not that big a deal to have them all listed there,
but then again if other apps can hide them that means it can be done.
 Apple
claims they want to have the best Podcast app there is and it's not like
they didn't have plenty to compare it to. It's sort of like with the new
Maps, they make a big deal about a new product and then it falls way
 short
of what people expect and is launched with lots of problems or incomplete
features. And with Maps I can see how it would be a huge job, not exactly
the case with a Podcast app.

Re: How to downgrade to IOS 5.1.1

2012-09-24 Thread Mária Orovčíková
Hi Sieghard and all,
Thank you very much for very detailed explanation about upgrading IOS6.
Please, where can I download IOS5.1.1 again? Should I google it?
With regards
Maria

Sent from IPhone

Dňa 23.9.2012, o 21:56, Sieghard Weitzel siegh...@live.ca napísal:

 Hi Mária,

I only downgraded my iPhone 4 once and that was after I optained a beta copy
of iOS 5 back last year in July. I was pretty excited about iOS 5 after the
June announcement so I paid some guy on eBay 5 Dollars to register my UDID
under his developer account. I then had to find a website to download the
iOS 5 beta, but since it was only the first or second Beta it gave me so
many problems that after a week or 2 I downloaded iOS 4.3 again from the
same website. Basically, as long as Apple allows downgrading and provided
you find a full copy of iOS 5.1.1 which will be somewhere in the
neighbourhood of 700 or 800 Megabytes to ddownload, you just download it,
then if you want to downgrade you hook your phone up to iTunes and instead
of pressing Enter on Restore you press Shift+Enter. If you are using
Windows this will open a standard Open File dialogue, you then browse to
where you saved the iOS 5.1.1 file which has a .ipsw extention, select it
and press Open. From then on it's a standard restore procedure and if all
goes well you will be back to 5.1.1 when it's done.

Now, having said this, I don't think you have too much to worry about. iOS 6
seems to run very well on the iPhone 4 and in fact quite a few people here
have reported it seems to be more responsive than iOS 5.1.1 was although
there are a few exceptions where some people seem to have problems. As for
features all works well except custom labels has a bug and there are a few
other things which maybe you read about if you followed the list. Nothing I
 think is a deal breaker.

If you do upgrade make sure you are plugged into power and back up before
and even though some claim it makes no difference, do this after you backed
up and before starting the update:

Turn on Airplane Mode, then go into WiFi and turn WiFi back on still with
 Airplane mode enabled.
This will turn off Bluetooth and the phone so at least your upgrade won't be
 interrupted by a phone call.

Next, go to the app switcher and force quit all apps.

Last, turn your iPhone off and turn it back on, basically this reboots the
device. I would also plug it into a power outlet with the wall charger and
not the computer, somebody mentioned yesterday that if you plug it into the
computer you use to sync and have iTunes open it can cause the phone to go
into DFU mode which you do not want to happen.

Now you can go to Settings, General and Software Update and start the
update. Keep in mind that the download itself can take about half an hour or
more and if it seems to be stuck at 96% don't panic and just let it sit, it
will finish eventually. Also, the actual install with all reboots and so on
can take another 30 minutes or even up to an hour, so unless Voiceover
doesn't come on for about 2 hours, don't worry. If it doesn't come on after
2 hours or more, well, then do worry *smile*.

I started the update via WiFi but got impatient when nothing happened for 5
minutes as it sat at 96% and I rebooted the phone. After that it kept
telling me that my version 5.1.1 was the latest update so I just hooked it
up to iTunes and did the update via iTunes. From all I heard from those who
did the update on the phone via WiFi I think I preferred to do it via iTunes
as I could always see what was happening, I heard the various sounds the
computer made when the iPhone disconnected and reconnected during the update
etc. If you want to do this via iTunes you have to be upgraded to the latest
 version which is 10.7.

 Hi Mária,

I only downgraded my iPhone 4 once and that was after I optained a
beta copy of iOS 5 back last year in July. I was pretty excited about
iOS 5 after the June announcement so I paid some guy on eBay 5 Dollars
to register my UDID under his developer account. I then had to find a
website to download the iOS 5 beta, but since it was only the first or
second Beta it gave me so many problems that after a week or 2 I
downloaded iOS 4.3 again from the same website. Basically, as long as
Apple allows downgrading and provided you find a full copy of iOS
5.1.1 which will be somewhere in the neighbourhood of 700 or 800
Megabytes to ddownload, you just download it, then if you want to
downgrade you hook your phone up to iTunes and instead of pressing
Enter on Restore you press Shift+Enter. If you are using Windows
this will open a standard Open File dialogue, you then browse to where
you saved the iOS 5.1.1 file which has a .ipsw extention, select it
and press Open. From then on it's a standard restore procedure and if all
goes well you will be back to 5.1.1 when it's done.

Now, having said this, I don't think you have too much to worry about.
iOS 6 seems to run very well on the iPhone 4 and in fact quite a few
people here have reported it seems to be more responsive than iOS
5.1.1 was although there are a few exceptions where some people seem
to have problems. As for features all works well except custom labels
has a bug and there are a few other things which maybe you read about
if you followed the list. Nothing I think is a deal breaker.

If you do upgrade make sure you are plugged into power and back up
before and even though some claim it makes no difference, do this
after you backed up and before starting the update:

Turn on Airplane Mode, then go into WiFi and turn WiFi back on still
 with Airplane mode enabled.
This will turn off Bluetooth and the phone so at least your upgrade
won't be interrupted by a phone call.

Next, go to the app switcher and force quit all apps.

Last, turn your iPhone off and turn it back on, basically this reboots
the device. I would also plug it into a power outlet with the wall
charger and not the computer, somebody mentioned yesterday that if you
plug it into the computer you use to sync and have iTunes open it can
cause the phone to go into DFU mode which you do not want to happen.

Now you can go to Settings, General and Software Update and
start the update. Keep in mind that the download itself can take about
half an hour or more and if it seems to be stuck at 96% don't panic
and just let it sit, it will finish eventually. Also, the actual
install with all reboots and so on can take another 30 minutes or even
up to an hour, so unless Voiceover doesn't come on for about 2 hours,
don't worry. If it doesn't come on after
2 hours or more, well, then do worry *smile*.

I started the update via WiFi but got impatient when nothing happened
for 5 minutes as it sat at 96% and I rebooted the phone. After that it
kept telling me that my version 5.1.1 was the latest update so I just
hooked it up to iTunes and did the update via iTunes. From all I heard
from those who did the update on the phone via WiFi I think I
preferred to do it via iTunes as I could always see what was
happening, I heard the various sounds the computer made when the
iPhone disconnected and reconnected during the update etc. If you want
to do this via iTunes you have to be upgraded to the latest version which is
 10.7.

 Sieghard

Re: ATT has changed their terms of service

2012-09-24 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Scott, you might be right. The only thing I can think of is if you use
an att.net email address that may be all it needs to see you are a
supposed Internet customer. The change in terms of service mentions
Yahoo as well and as you may or may not know, ATT's email services go
through Yahoo. So, maybe that's why I got it. I really don't know, but I
also checked the wireless site and nowhere in there does it mention any
updated terms of service for cell phones.

Sorry about that folks.

I reboot my phone, Daniel returns. This is my default because it is a

need to do to keep Samantha permanently? It will get irritating

you think it will resolve itself once I have the HQ voice back? It's
been two days and I still haven't got it though. Thanks

Navigation question using BrailleSense OnHand.

2012-09-24 Thread Veronica Elsea

Hi everyone!
Well, there are many major complaints I have about IOS 6, but I'm trying
to make up for them by pairing my BrailleSense OnHand with my iphone 4S.
I have done that and am now learning the VO braille commands. Okay, very
nice when writing messages. But here's my question. Is there any way to
move around the screen besides just going item to item to item? So, if
I'm looking for an app that's in the third row and third column, is
there no option other than using space-dot 4 to go through the first
row, the second row and then into the third till I find my app? I get
than in Safari, at least I can change the rotor to do some things. So
I'm enjoying reading things in braille, but I am finding it rather slow
and inefficient. Do most of you do some of the navigation just on the
phone itself and use the braille commands when it suits? Thanks.

Re: losing Wi fi conection from time to time

2012-09-24 Thread Veronica Elsea
I too have this issue. Since upgrading to IOS 6 on Thursday, I've had to
go into settings and choose my network four times. This is not the very
quick and intermittent loss of wireless that I saw in 5.1, but gone long
enough to not show up in the notification center. I think the marketing
people got in the way of rolling out a good product this time around.
Just my opinion!

Re: Not crazy about iOS 6 new touch type mode.

2012-09-24 Thread Jean-Philippe Rykiel
Well, I guess I'll just have to get used to it then.
Best,
JPR

 Hi all,
I sent the following request to Apple, trying to be as clear as I could.
If you agree with my disagreement, I would like you to do the same with
 your own words.
 Thanks.

 Dear Apple team,
This new iOS version is great, but I would like to point out some
unpleasant issues with its revised touch typing mode.

1, It was a good move to give touch typing behaviour to keys such as
capital or other but not for the delete key. let me try and explain why.
In the previous iOS version, you could delete characters successively by
holding the delete key and split tapping as many times as you wanted. You
had full control of your delete speed because no matter where the second
finger was typing, the delete function was performed as long as the delete
 key was held.
Now, with iOS six, you must be very careful and accurate if you want to
delete successive characters, as you have to constantly hit and release
the delete key. The new delete double tap and hold function is too quick to
let you hear the feedback of what you are deleting, so it is unusable most
 of the time.
My wish is that the delete key was restored as it was in previous iOS
 versions.

The second disadvantage is for non-English- users who use accented letters
frequently. It is true that keyboard latency has been improved because of
this, but it is now impossible to briefly hit a key and then double tap and
hold it to get its alternative characters. You now have to do three
gestures, find the right letter, split tap, and then double tap and hold to
look for accents. May I suggest if possible, that you give us the accents
list as soon as split tapping is performed, allowing us to scroll
through it by sliding the second finger, that would be much easyer.
 Thank you for your understanding,
 sincerely,
 Jean-Philippe

brand new iphone user, need help

2012-09-24 Thread Candy

Hello everyone,
I am a brand newiphone user. Thursday I got the 4s, and of
course on Friday it updated. I have so many questions, I really don't where to
start, but, one thing at a time. I understand that siri and voice over don't
get along. Okay, I want to make a call, I press the home key three times and
voice over turns off. Then, I ask siri to call someone. She does. Then, I
have no speach on my screen in case I get another call, want to press end or
something like that. Is their an easier way to make a call. When I tried
making a call with voice over still on, Siri would say that she would make the
call, but she would never connect. Any suggestions. I am 62 years old and
this is all foreign to me. I am a pretty good windows user with jaws and
system access, but this is so different. I am not going to let it get the best
of me. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: Small braille keyboard/displays for iPhone

hi, The old braille connect is much as you describe. The new brilliant bi has
the same basic feature set as the braille connect, only the keys have better
action, particularly the space bars. it's also made of a different type of
aluminum that's a different texture. i actually like it a lot, even though the
keys on the braille keyboard feel a bit big to my fingers. i'd suggest if you
were going to go that rout, you get an executive leather case for your display.
if you get the apex it will come with a pretty nice case already, but if you
just get a braille display such as the brilliant bi, you won't get a carrying
case. That would take care of at least some of your aversion to the aluminum.

Re: brand new iphone user, need help

2012-09-24 Thread Scott Howell
You do not have to turn VoiceOver off in order to use Siri. You only need
activate Siri and speak what you want and wait for a few seconds after you are
done speaking. Siri will carryout your requested action.
I hope that helps get you started. Don't worry you will become a pro at using
the iPhone before you know it.

that's why I got it. I really don't know, but I also checked the wireless

RE: Navigation question using BrailleSense OnHand.

2012-09-24 Thread Richard Turner
You can control the rotor from the braille display:
Space-bar plus dots 5,6 turns the rotor clockwise, space-bar plus dots 2,3
turn it counter-clockwise.
Space-bar plus dot 3 goes to the previous rotor setting and space-bar plus
dot 6 goes to the next rotor setting.

Subject: Navigation question using BrailleSense OnHand.

Hi everyone!
Well, there are many major complaints I have about IOS 6, but I'm trying to
make up for them by pairing my BrailleSense OnHand with my iphone 4S.
I have done that and am now learning the VO braille commands. Okay, very
nice when writing messages. But here's my question. Is there any way to move
around the screen besides just going item to item to item? So, if I'm
looking for an app that's in the third row and third column, is there no
option other than using space-dot 4 to go through the first row, the second
row and then into the third till I find my app? I get than in Safari, at
least I can change the rotor to do some things. So I'm enjoying reading
things in braille, but I am finding it rather slow and inefficient. Do most
of you do some of the navigation just on the phone itself and use the
braille commands when it suits? Thanks.

No, this is not a blog post about The Rolling Stones classic, or for those of

all of those cloud based services that you hear about these days. In this

So, sit back and launch your Pandora application on your iPhone and listen to

Re: brand new iphone user, need help

2012-09-24 Thread reggie.alvar...@gmail.com
Candy,
No this will not get the better of you!! I am 60 years old and like you had
never held an Apple device. Big learning curve and much frustration later, I
am using it and maintaining it fairly easily. Practice your gestures in
setting/general/accessibility/practice and once familiar with them, play and
keep playing. If you wish I can send you a great getting started document
written by a friend. I also would encourage you to go to the new iPhone users
forum running Tuesday by our own Beverly. I have the number and access code or
she may post here. Of course you can ask here. Applevis.com is another great
resource for podcasts on how to do's. I would also offer to talk if you wish.
Email is reggie.alvar...@gmail.com hope this gives encouragement.

Re: Listing only free apps in app store

2012-09-24 Thread David Goodwin
If you use the rotor to navigate the charts and category pages by
Heading, you will find that Paid, Free and Top Grossing lists are still
there. If you simply flick right to browse the page, you have to go
through all 100 apps in the Paid list before you reach the list of free
apps, and then another 100 flicks to get to the Top Grossing ones.

Hope this help.

RE: What happened to the speaker volume control

2012-09-24 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Ricardo,

I have the same problem he describes, I have the change volume with buttons
enabled and the volume added to the rotor. If I turn up VO volume during a
speakerphone call to 100% I have to be in a very quiet place and hold my
phone close so I can even hear Voiceover. I have perfectly good hearing by
the way and this is definitely very inconvenient. I make a lot of calls with
headset, but for those times I don't and need to press numbers during a call
or listen to a menu it's a pain in the neck.

I think this seems to be one of those bugs which appear only on certain
phones. It's like when some people always have issues with the iPhone
dropping off WiFi or the Voiceover going silent thing in iOS 5, I have never
had these issues, but I'm sure they exist. Same with some people reporting
the battery life on their 4S is worse in iOS 6 than before, it's the
opposite for me and others.

Sieghard

Hi,

I'm not sure this is a bug. I'm not seeing this behavior at all on my
iPhone 5 or 4S running IOS 6. Actually, In IOS 6, for me at least, they
have increased the volume of voiceover when on a call and the phone is
placed on speaker. Its so loud, I had to turn down Voiceover.

2012-09-24 Thread Øyvind Lode
I have the same problem over here with my 4S.
I even restored to factory defaults but VO is extremely low when on a call.
I can change the volume of the call but not VoiceOver.
Both the call and VO comes through the speaker.
Works fine if I use a headset.

RE: Any thoughts on iPhone 5 reception and gps

2012-09-24 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Ioana,

I guess you didn't listen to the keynote announcing the iPhone 5? They made
quite a big deal about the improved WiFi on the 5 which now supports dual
band on the 2.4 and 5 Ghz bands. Many new routers use 5 Ghz since the 2.4
Ghz band is very cluttered.

You can listen to the keynote at www.apple.com, it's probably worth it since
you do get a good overview of all the new features. If you use a Podcast
client like Downcast you can also subscribe to the official Apple Apple
podcast which is called Apple Keynotes.

Apple Keynotes

2012-09-24 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello List,

Does anybody know why there are 2 versions of the most recent keynote? The
same happened it June and Downcast wants to download both which is a pain
since they are very large files. They show as being exactly the same length
and have the same description. I guess I have to change the settings for
this podcast to only download 1 episode, but I'm just curious if anybody
knows why it's there twice.

Thanks,

Sieghard

RE: another you tube app?vi

2012-09-24 Thread Rick Alfaro
I downloaded this app and took it for a spin. The buttons controls and edit
fields are fine, but executing any option that involves a list of any kind
doesn't speak. I signed in and did a search. That part was accessible but
the resulting list of matches to my search just wasn't there as far as VO
was concerned. Just an FYI.

I actually think the Google YouTube client works pretty well but thought I'd
try this just for grins.

Best,

Rick

Ipad 2 sim problem after upgrade

2012-09-24 Thread Fanus
Hello list
A friend who is not on this list has a problem in that,
after he did the upgrade to IOS6 on his iPad 2, The iPad
does not see the sim card. The message that he gets is
that he must connect to the PC and do a restore with iTunes
but it also says then he will have to purchase all the apps
again. He does not mind to do the restore but he does not
want to spend money to buy the apps again.
Has anyone come across this problem or can anyone suggest a

Re: Navigation question using BrailleSense OnHand.

2012-09-24 Thread Scott Davert
hi Veronica.
To answer your navigation question about moving across the screen,
there is no way that I know of to move quickly across the screen with
a braille display. Sometimes, it's just faster to hit the touch
screen. Or, for example, you can use space with L to go to the top or
space with 4-5-6 to get to the bottom of the screen. Those are really
the only ways of navigating around the home screen.

Is there any way to
 move
around the screen besides just going item to item to item? So, if I'm
looking for an app that's in the third row and third column, is there no
option other than using space-dot 4 to go through the first row, the second
row and then into the third till I find my app? I get than in Safari, at
least I can change the rotor to do some things. So I'm enjoying reading
things in braille, but I am finding it rather slow and inefficient. Do most
of you do some of the navigation just on the phone itself and use the
braille commands when it suits? Thanks.

I was so excited when I first launched the new maps application in iOS six.
I was in a friend's car and was so glad to discover that we finally had

Re: walking deception.

2012-09-24 Thread Hope Paulos
I agree with you. I took a look at the map quest app, which supposedly will
give you voice guided walking directions, but I can't figure out how to use it.
I think we should all right to Apple and have them provide us with voice guided

Re: iPhone Passcode query

2012-09-24 Thread Steve
How about just plugging in your earbuds when you want to enter a passcode
that you want to be private. Its kind of the same issue as when placing a
phone call where everyone can hear the number you are dialing if you don't
have earbuds on.

Subject: iPhone Passcode query

Hello list,

So after a long time not getting around to it, I finally set a passcode on
my iPhone (4S).

Anyway, that wasn't the problem, but now of course, when I unlock my phone
and am prompted to enter in my four digit code, VO announces what I'm
typing. This kind of defeats the purpose. At home it's not an issue, but
when I'm out and about or around people whoever they may be, what's the
point since my code is announced to anyone keen enough to hear?

I know that Apple just couldn't have had VoiceOver say star, star, star,
star or asterisc, asterisc, asterisc, asterisc for every number we press
since we would then have no idea if we're pressing the right key combination
or not. My question is if there's in fact some other means to protect our
four digit code from being announced in a way where it's not broadcasted to
the four winds whenever we wish to unlock our device? I poke around the
settings and didn't find anything if there was anything at all. I guess
enabling a dial pad feature to recreate the tones when making a call could
be a solution, but those tones are so subtle, it really takes a trained ear
to differentiate them from one another.

Anyway, just thought I'd ask if anyone knows of a better solution.

iOS 6 news

2012-09-24 Thread Chris
Disable Siri in the Passcode Lock settings if you don't want strangers
to use your phone while it's locked.

Elinor Mills
by Elinor Mills
September 24, 2012 8:07 AM PDT

The latest version of iOS lets you use Siri to send Facebook posts and
Tweets even if the device is locked.

To block the use of Siri on a locked device disable the feature in the
Passcode Lock settings.

(Credit: Jessica Dolcourt/CNET)

Upgrading to iOS 6? Be careful about leaving your locked iPhone
unattended unless you change some settings. Otherwise an unscrupulous
stranger could order Siri to send tweets and Facebook posts from your
account that you didn't make -- even if your phone is locked.

Apple has added the ability for Siri to interact with Twitter and
Facebook from the lock screen, just like you can use Siri to send text
messages and e-mails and make calls on a locked device running iOS 5. If
you don't want Siri to conduct these sorts of activities while the
device is locked, you have to disable Siri in the Passcode Lock settings.

I'm not trying to scare anyone, but many people may not know about this.
It's convenient to be able to use Siri without typing in a passcode, but
if you're prone to leaving your phone where others could have a go at it
without you around, you should know about this feature.

special thing about this is you can send multiple files/documents by
email. I'm not sure wehther it was free or not when I got it several

Re: Making ringtones with goldwave

2012-09-24 Thread Scott Davert
While I know you were looking for someone to walk you through the
process, the below link I think may help, and I'm sure others wonder
how to do this. I haven't done this myself, so can't guarantee it'll
work.
http://www.applevis.com/guides/iphone/ringtones-rookies-11-easy-steps-getting-all-your-favorites-your-iphone
Submitted by Ken Downey on 28 August 2012

Posted in: iPhone
 Miscellaneous

Many of you have been wondering: what is the easiest way to get
ringtones on my iPhone. Follow these steps, and all your favorites
will be on your iPhone in no time.
Requirements: PC running Windows
App: Goldwave.
1.Download Goldwave from www.goldwave.com and run it. Click file,
then batch processing.
2.In the folders tab, click add file or add folder, then add
everything you want to convert. In the convert tab, click media
foundations m4a, and set the attributes to mono since you can't hear
them in stereo anyway. After all, they're ringtones.
3.Click begin and go do the dishes, as Goldwave shuts down sometimes
when you exit the window. this is a bug! After the files are all
converted, click OK and exit Goldwave.
4.Enter the command prompt, and change the directory to the desired
location, e.g. ringtones, by typing cd\ringtones. Then type ren *.m4a
*.m4r. This only takes a second.
5.Once all the m4a files have been renamed, exit the command prompt
and enter File Explorer.
6.Go to the folder with your m4r ringtones and hit control-a to
select all of them.
7.Go to iTunes. Find the tree view, and hit t until it says tones. If
there is no tones playlist, create it.
8.Now press tab, which takes you to the playlist itself. Press
control-v to paste the files into the list.
9.Go to the tree view again and select your device. Then tab to the
sync tones radio button and check it. Then, tab about six times until
you find a check box that says sync tones. The button allows you to
check the appropriate box.
10.Plug in your iPhone, and in no time it'll be cluttered up with, if
you're like me anyway, hundreds of useless ringtones and a few very
good ones.
11.If you don't like some of the tones, delete them from your tones
list. They will automatically be deleted from your iPhone.

Ok, but in iOS 6 it is actually possible to do a double tap and hold via

Might a suggestion for apple be that braille panning, should be a
possibility in the router, when we wright handed readers could set the

the best solution, but it might maybe work.

 Hi Annie,

I understand. Here is an example of why I say the new key assignments
are unusable. I was in TweetList trying to read down my tweets. I
pushed the right whiz wheel down once, not to scroll, but just to try to
 move one line.

Sometimes, it would stay on the same line. Sometimes, it would jump
up to the prior line or further. Sometimes, it would jump down a couple
 of lines.
And here's the clencher: Once, rolling the Whiz wheel down landed me
smack in the status bar at the very top of the screen. Only once, out
 of my 10 to
15 attempts to move downward, did I successfully move down a single
 line.

I've had this happen more than once when trying to navigate through
folders on my homescreen, including mysteriously landing in the status
 bar, as well.

That's why I say, these key assignments are unuseable. It should not
take 15 attempts to move down one line. It's ridiculous.

I agree with you. To me it is unuseble too. I will really get
problems to go to the next display line with my focus display. The
only bottun that can go to the next line is the button in the wright
end, and that will course problems with my hand, if I will have to use
 that button all the time.

What really worked with the focus display, is for me totally broken.

navigate. When I need to scroll through something quickly, this is
not a practical way to do it. So, for me, it really is unusable. I'm
not flying off the handle, I'm not being irrational; I'm not even
afraid of something new. It really, truly doesn't work for me

Apple has changed the key assignments for the Focus products in iOS6.
The best thing to do until an FSCast comes out on this, is to press
K-cord to invoke keyboard help, then press the keys to understand
 what
 they now do.

People can of course offer feedback to Apple on the new assignments,

 still very much useable.

VoiceOver skipping body of some messages

2012-09-24 Thread Ryan Mann
Hello. I've been helping somebody learn the iPhone and the person is having a
weird problem with some emails. When the person opens some email messages,
VoiceOver wants to skip from the subject of the email to the bottom of the
screen where the Reply and Compose buttons are. I worked with the person's
iPhone today and I confirmed that this happens. We do the following steps:
1. Double-tap on an email to open it.
2. Put a finger at the top of the Mail screen.
3. Start swiping to the right with one finger. On some emails, this works fine
for reading email, but on other messages, VoiceOver jumps to the bottom of the
Mail screen if I swipe to the right after the subject.
Why would VoiceOver do this? This person has an iPhone 4S. We updated to IOS
6 today, but I think it was doing this before the update.
Thanks.

Re: iOS 6 news

2012-09-24 Thread Grant Hardy
Just to be clear, this was also the case in iOS 5. A stranger could
text, Email, or call your contacts, lookup phone numbers, and so
forth. If you had Facebook and Twitter set up as contacts which you
could text, they could also post on your behalf. Nevertheless, I agree
- it's an important setting to keep an eye on.

Tweets even if the device is locked.

Re: VoiceOver skipping body of some messages

2012-09-24 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi Ryan,

I don't know why this is happening, but how about having them touch the screen
near the top, under the subject and date? That way they can skip the headers
and start reading the message right away, and hopefully avoid this problem.

Best,
Anna

Hello. I've been helping somebody learn the iPhone and the person is having

On some emails, this works fine
for reading email, but on other messages, VoiceOver jumps to the bottom of
the Mail screen if I swipe to the right after the subject.
Why would VoiceOver do this? This person has an iPhone 4S. We updated to
IOS 6 today, but I think it was doing this before the update.
 Thanks.

Didn't work. Not always, but intermitently messages would go to another page.
No more problems with six!

Re: anylist grocery list

2012-09-24 Thread Antonio Guimaraes

Try Grocery IQ.

I wonder if others will have experience with it, and know whether the
app has a sharing feature.

I'm almost 100 percent sure you can email a list, but will let others
weight in on this one if they can.

Hi folks,

does anyone use the anylist grocery list ap? I tried to share a list
with my girlfriend and voiceover is only reading me some of the items on
it as I scroll through it. For the ones it's not reading me, I have to
expand each one and then the item will come up with the info about it
where I can add a note. If I just scroll through, I'm greeted with a
flick sound but no item name until I click on the expand button. I don't
think it's an icon or picture on there, as the other things can be read
fine. Any help on this is appreciated, or a rec of another ap where you
can share grocery lists that is more accessible. thanks,

RE: Navigation question using BrailleSense OnHand.

Am I understanding correctly? Vertical navigation inables both vertical and

Wow, I never even thought of that! Thank you David! It makes moving
around the home screen a bit faster!

Set your rotor to vertical navigation. You will then be able to navigate the
grid in all 4 directions. iPhone was designed to be navigated on the

 Hi everyone!
Well, there are many major complaints I have about IOS 6, but I'm trying
to make up for them by pairing my BrailleSense OnHand with my iphone 4S. I
have done that and am now learning the VO braille commands. Okay, very
nice when writing messages. But here's my question. Is there any way to
move around the screen besides just going item to item to item? So, if I'm
looking for an app that's in the third row and third column, is there no
option other than using space-dot 4 to go through the first row, the
second row and then into the third till I find my app? I get than in
Safari, at least I can change the rotor to do some things. So I'm enjoying
reading things in braille, but I am finding it rather slow and
inefficient. Do most of you do some of the navigation just on the phone
itself and use the braille commands when it suits? Thanks.
