Re: Quick way to delete contacts

2016-05-02 Thread Jewel
I have done many stupid things in my 77 years, but, surely, the most stupid
would have to be when I
acquired an iPhone exactly 1 year ago, a year that has been full of frustration
and tribulation!
yeah--yeah--yeah! I can hear a huge outcry from many who think otherwise, but
that is my opinion
and I haven't found any reason to change it!
I am having a hell of a job trying to get my contact list straightened out of
the mess that it has
got into. I wish that my monstrosity would delete as easily as Terri has found
it to be, though one
contact at a time. I open a contact that I wish to edit and press delete until
I am in danger of
getting repetitive strain injury, but does it delete? no fear! there it
stays, grinning at me!

Subject: Quick way to delete contacts

I know how to delete a contact one at a time: open contact double tap edit and
double tap delete. I
have not yet figured out a way to make this process quicker. Is there a way to
select contacts from
the contact list and then delete a group? I, being foolish, told the iTunes
software to sync my
contacts from Outlook with the phone. Unfortunately my Outlook contacts are a
jungle of insanity,
three and four different and the same email addresses for one person, etc.
Going through them one by
one and deleting each one per the above process is quite time-consuming. I hope
someone can lead me
toward A way to select multiple contacts for deletion.
Thanks for any ideas you can share. This list is awesome.
Best,
Terrie Terlau.

Can you launch Safari sites that you added to the Home Screen with Siri?

2016-05-02 Thread Kevin Minor
Hi.

I've added two links to my Home Screen. If I double tap on either one of
these, Safari launches, and I'm where I expect to be. However, if I try to
activate them with Siri, I get random results. If I can use Siri to launch
these links, how do I do it?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Plantronics Backbeat Sense stereo bluetooth headset - my final verdict

2016-05-02 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi List,

I posted a week or two ago that I had spent some fairly serious money ($200
Canadian) for a Plantronics Backbeat Sense bluetooh stero headset. I bought it
from Amazon and it arrived fairly quickly and I have used it off and on for
about a week or 10 days now. To sum it up, I am returning the headset tomorrow,
I already initiated the return on the Amazon.ca website and printed the return
shipping label.
The main reason why I am not keeping it is the aweful lag with Voiceover. This
is a fairly newly released Bluetooth 4.0 device and the delay is horrible.
Voiceover doesn't even keep up if I swipe quickly across the icons on the home
screen and typing anything is just a pain in the neck.
Apart from that I really like the headset, it is very comfortable, battery life
is good and the sound quality is impressive for a Bluetooth headset. It also
has nice controls and I like the feature that it senses if you take it off and
it automatically pauses playback, but that lag is a total deal-breaker. In
addition to that it sometimes seems to randomly disconnect even if my iPhone is
only a few feet away.
So it's going back and I'll use the money and then some to buy a new Festool
cordless drill, at least I know that with that I am getting the best there is.

Best regards,
Sieghard

You ask the previous owner or you have to put in a SIM from a provider the

What kind of form factor does the Braille Edge feature? At 40 cells, I’m
guessing it’s pretty long, but how thick is it? Are the keys comfortable to
type on? As in, do they have decent travel? Is the layout more or less similar
to their U2 notetakers? And, most relevant to this list, is the pairing and
navigation experience with iOS fairly smooth?

A good display for a good price is the Hims Braille Edge 40. It has 40 cells
connects with PCs or iPhones and has basic note taking abilities. It sells for
only $2,795.00. The only thing I would recommend other than this is to buy the
Executive Products leather case which sells for $95.00. The case that comes

I don't have the money in hand yet, but I might become able to buy a braille
display. I would want at least 32 cells, preferably 40, and would use it both
with a pc running Windows 10, with either Jaws, or NVDA, and my iPhone, the
iPhone being the more important. I don't know much about braille displays, I
admit that I have never actually used one. I never thought I would have the
money I could use to buy one. So, if it were your own money buying it, which
one would those of you who use them recommend? I know about the Braille Edge,
the Brilliant, and the one from Freedom Scientific, there may be others. I
know the answer to this question depends upon who one asks, but I am seeking
opinions, in case this actually happens. Thanks for any opinions.

Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap on Reset Network Settings. After
you confirm and the phone reboots you will have to reconnect to your WiFi and
while I can’t guaranty that it will fix the problem, there is a good chance it
might.

my other iPhone will still connect fine, using the same apple ID and

I don't think that is the problem, as other apps that need internet access can

Well, Bluetooth is off, except when I deliberately turned it on to use an
earpiece when I am out somewhere. And brightness is still at 7%. So I don't

Hi Sieghard,

Thanks for the info. I got it all corrected. I saved your information in case I
ever do that again. Now that I have taken an app out of a folder I understand
how it workds.

Once again thanks for the great instructions.

Ed,

If you accidently create a folder it’s easiest to immediately find the app you
were moving and move it out again by doing a double finger tap and hold on it,
then just move your finger up on the screen maybe 2 inches. I don’t recall
exactly what Voiceover says, but it is something like to hold for 5 seconds to
move the app out and there are some tones playing as you are holding.

If you have already gone out of editing/moving mode, just find the folder, open
it and double tap and hold on any app in the folder, once editing mode is
active drag your finger up the screen a bit and hold for a few seconds just as
described above.

Sieghard

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to move an app in to my Extra folder. But when I tried moving and at

want to do. So now how do I get the app out of that folder and delete the

Also what is the easiest way to move at to a folder without getting them on top

a folder the easiest way would be appreciated.

Re: Voiceover playing through airplay

2016-05-02 Thread Brent Harding
Yes, it seems the last two updates to iOS 9 have gotten worse when it comes
to this VO coming through airplay issue. When I need to restart vo to get
the audio level to come back up to normal for the source I intend to play,
vo comes through the speakers instead of the phone, and it loses connection
promptly if you switch channels on the apps or ever use siri. Airplay usage
has definitely gotten more buggy lately. I wish we could have it remember
airplay sources to more easily turn it on when it keeps doing this.

Hi all,
I just had a very strange thing happen. I had been streaming something from
my phone via airplay to my stereo. As always, voiceover was playing when I
wanted it, through the iPhone speaker, not the stereo. I stopped the
streaming, and started looking through email. I did some dictation. And
voice over read back to me when I had dictated through my stereo, and
continued to play through my stereo until I turned it off. This must be
another aspect of the strange audio bug that has been around since iOS 9. I
have never had it happen before and hope it doesn't happen again. The only
way I got it to stop was to turn the stereo off.

Re: Battery on an iPhone 6s

2016-05-02 Thread Mary Otten
Thanks, Anna. I have looked in there, and not seen anything really unusual. I
don't have an Apple store in town. But there is something called the Mac store.
They might be able to test the battery.

Re: Battery on an iPhone 6s

2016-05-02 Thread Woody Anna Dresner
Hi Mary,

I don't know how you would prove it, but if you aren't doing this already,
check Settings/Battery to see which apps are using the most power. You may be
able to find an app that is using more power than it should or some other
reason why your battery life isn't what you expect. Also, if you have access to
an Apple store, they can test your battery.

Best,
Anna

RE: Battery juice packs

Hehehehehe me too. I don’t know how many times my phones have fallen off the
little table I have. And it’s still good, and also the glass type screen
protectors have been good too, because sometimes my phone falls face down, and
I’d hate to think what it would have been like if there wasn’t the protector
there. The glass one anyway.

I like and use the Mophie Juicepack Air. It is basically a case with a battery
built into the bottom. When you set the phone in the case, it sits above the
battery. When your phone battery runs low, you flip the switch on the back to
the “on” position, and your phone will begin to charge. I believe you get two
charges from one charge of the battery. When you plug the phone in the case in
to charge, both the phone battery and the case battery will charge. What I like
about the Mophie is that it has an actual physical switch, so you know when it
is turned on. Apple also sells a charging case. It is fatter because the
battery is in the back of the case. I believe that it runs the case battery
down first, and then the phone battery. Its process is automated, and there is
no switch. I believe that the Apple case costs more.

Hi there,

Sorry for the repeat email. Someone’s asking me this question, because I get
to choose it as a gift. Unsure of what to ask for, I figured I’d ask again.

I’m guessing some of you use those little deals that are protective cases for
the iPhone which also serve as a charging unit or add extra battery life to the
phone. If so, what are good recommendations for those kinds of things? I’ve
never had one and want to get one that will work well and last a while. I’m
not even sure what they’re called, but I thought someone once referred to them
as battery juice packs, but I don’t think that sounds right.

I’ve got an iPhone 6.

If someone wants to go into a little detail as to how it works, that’d be
fantastic!!

Thanks again.

Jim

I use the Apple Smart Battery Case which is $100. It is like the other juice
pack described but with no switch. I love it though since the phone is easy to
get in or out of the case, you just fold the top part back and can take it in
or out. There is a bump on the back of the case, but it is not overly large.
The Apple Smart Battery Case fits in my pocket very well and is a little
thinner than the Otterbox Defender case I used to use. I have an iPhone 6S but
it also works with the 6.
Best investment I ever made. After seeing how much battery life I get, my wife
is jealous and has to wait till we get the 7 this fall. On average, I get
between 11 and 14 hours before my phone dips below 100 percent. It lasts about
as long as the Plus phones.

iPhone won't connect to store.

2016-05-02 Thread goshawk on horseback
hello all,
am having a very annoying problem with one of my iPhones, that I just can't
seem to get rid of.
this particular iPhone, for some reason, will not connect to the iTunes store.
it comes up with the right apple id, and I enter the right password, but it
just keeps saying a very unhelpful, "cannot connect to iTunes store"
does anyone have any idea why this phone is doing this, and how I can sort it
out?
my other iPhone will still connect fine, using the same apple ID and password,
but this one, which has worked before, just won't.

Battery on an iPhone 6s

2016-05-02 Thread Mary Otten
Hi all,
It seems to me that the battery life on my iPhone 6s is not anything close to
what it was when I got this phone towards the end of last year. Of course,
memory overtime is subjective, and I am a heavy user of the phone. I saw a
recently a post somewhere the talked about being able to check the battery
cycles on your Mac. And the person who wrote the article said that he was
pleasantly surprised to see that his Mac still had lots of battery cycles left.
Is there anyway to do that with the phone? I bought my phone through my
carrier. And I suspect that if I go there and say that my battery life is not
like it used to be, they are going to say something like prove it. And I can't.
Any advice?
Mary

I believe NFB (and you don't have to belong) has a list called "electronics
talk"; I've been on it in the past, but using a different pc (which I no longer
have access to). If no one else can turn up subscription info, I'll try and
find the url for their mailing list server, where I believe this can be found.

I don't think this is the list you're looking for, but there's a list called
BlindMobileTech where you can talk about anything related to accessible mobile

Just playing around with my games last night, I found an app I've had for a
long time and kind of forgot about. It's a game called ear monsters. You do
need earphones, so that's probably why I don't use it much, but boy is it
addicting! You tap the screen to kill the monsters, left side if you hear the
monster in the left ear etc. There are bombs and airplanes that come along
too. What fun!
God bless!

I use a fair number already mentioned here, plus, super market apps, such as
tesco, sainsburys, ocado, asda, and morrisons.
all of the above, for doing online super market shopping to be delivered.

ebay,

paypal,

various games, including a lot of the choice of games titles, king of dragon
pass, turf wars, and many others, these are great for long train journeys,
especially if one is feeling a bit tired, as they keep the brain more active,
so one is less likely to fall asleep and miss one's station.
(I would recommend also running something like uListen, awareness, or speech
amp, which will then also let you listen to what is going on around you such as
station announcements, whilst you have your headphones on for your game).

trainline. for booking train tickets.

one click cab. for finding/calling taxis all over the UK.

in a pub, pub & bar finder, find me boozer. all of these are for finding local
pubs all over the UK.

track my hack. this tracks my rout and speed, when I am horse riding.

hungry house, or just eat. for finding/ordering takeaways.

tide times. a useful one for those who like there sea swimming, and need to
know local tide times.

music id, sound hound, music DNA id. these are good if you hear a good track on
the radio and want to find out what it is to buy or download it, especially if
the presenter has a habit of not mentioning what track is coming up, or just
been played.

meet up. this one has really helped me improve my social life. it finds various
groups in your area, that do all sorts of things, from the purely social, to
the active.

various tv apps, such as bbc iPlayer, ITV hub, 4OD, demand 5, racing UK, and
H play, (which is for the tv channel horse and country).

wild swimming britain, beach live, beach world, beach selecta, free swim.
all of these to find good places for open water swimming.

Honestly, I cannot stop smiling when I read your lists of apps and discover all
of the various ways you use them.

To those who have not yet posted, please remember that you do not need to list
only apps that have not yet been mentioned; just list the apps that you use and
how you use them if they are not self-explanatory.

Personally, I am making a list of all of the marvelous apps you have brought to

Nice list, Mark, here are a few more I use although some of them require

Sonos - requires Sonos music players, I think it's been discussed here enough
so I don't have to go into more details as to what exactly the Sonos system
does, if somebody doesn't know and wants to know go to www.sonos.com and check

Netatmo: requires the Netatmo weather station

Thermostat: requires the Wi-Fi capable thermostat from www.RadioThermostat.com

Nuheat: requires in-floor electric heating mats from Nuheat (the kind that are
installed underneath tile floors. The app allows me to control the thermostats
connected to each mat/room that has it, in my case two bathrooms and my kitchen.

Nest: I use it not for thermostat, but I purchased 5 Dropcam Pro a couple of
years ago for security cameras for my retail store. Dropcam was then purchased

RE: How to get an app out of a folder?

2016-05-02 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

RE: iTunes for windows and screen readers

2016-05-02 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Carol,

iTunes has a few areas that are difficult to deal with, mainly iTunes file
transfer and syncing apps. Everything else is actually not that difficult and I
always wonder why there seems to be an almost awe-like fear of iTunes.
Syncing apps is also easily done, it’s just that it used to be easier and
primarily it was easy to go through your entire list of apps, check the ones
you wanted and then sync them to your iPhone all at once. Now it’s easiest if
you use the search box and type in the name of the app you want, then tab a few
times to where you hear “Install” and then activate that, then activate “Apply”
or start a sync. I just did a bunch of apps this way on the 6S we got replaced
and which my wife now has.
Music and ringtones can still be selected and synced easily and doing updates,
restores and backups is also not difficult.
I also find navigating the iTunes Store relatively easy with Jaws 17. I can
still search for an app or a song or an artist and press Control+Enter instead
of just enter to search the iTunes store instead of my local library. Then I
just wait a bit until the page loads and you can use headings to go to the
different areas like “Songs”, “Albums”, “iPad Apps”, “iPhone Apps” etc.
I have been meaning to try Mark’s suggestion and use the Jaws touch cursor to
see how that helps, but for the most part F6, tab, Control+F and the shortcuts
for the various media libraries like Control+1 for music, Control+2 for movies
etc. work very well.

I do agree that it’s a shame that the iCloud website hasn’t been made
accessible by a company that prides itself on accessibility, but iTunes is not
nearly as bad as many people make it out to be.

Sieghard

Hi all,

I wonder, seriously, if it's time to talk with Apple about this.

We almost all hate iTunes with a passion, ... and it's not surprising! It's
really unfair that VI's should have to put up with this all the time ... It's
so bad that Apple should let such a standard exist for those of us who really
need iTunes to be straightforward, work flawlessly out of the box, have minimal
changes made and ... heaps more!

We could all write to Accessability but, before we do, can some of those who
are knowledgeable perhaps give us all the things that don't currently work or
were broken with iOS 9? Then we could write individually, perhaps.

Does anyone know if there are strong enough feelings within Applevis for those
who are obviously probably more clued up than the average iTunes VI user about
the problems and would back us in a meaningful way?

If anyone feels they could draft anything appropriate for us to tweak then that
may also be worth it before sending, so that we don't all say exactly the same
thing!

Perhaps they should be encouraged to write an app specially for us that really
works, that can only be used with an I device which is obviously running
VoiceOver (so could be detected). Yes, OK, theoretically, others could turn on
VO just to use the programme, and I guess some would as many sighted people
hate it - but maybe there are other safeguards Apple could write into the
programme, perhaps even being prepared to give us a special ID code.

Well, I've opened a can of worms here and please remember these are just
thoughts off the top of my head ... so let's keep this thread going awhile!

Carol P - Who hates iTunes with a passion and uses as little as she can get
away with!

RE: iTunes for windows and screen readers

2016-05-02 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
You can access whatever information is on the USB drive, but only via whatever
app goes with the drive. You cannot, for example, put music on the drive and
then get this music to show up in the music app or, for that matter, even copy
it to the internal storage of your iPhone. Ringtones is another example where
you either have to buy them from iTunes so they are available on the iPhone or
you have to use iTunes to sync them to your phone.
The thumb drives are really no different than Dropbox or OneDrive in that they
are a way to access files stored on them by the app just as you can access
information stored in Dropbox or OneDrive with the Dropbox or OneDrive app.
Only difference is that with Dropbox or OneDrive the files are in the cloud and
with the USB drives they are physically on the drive which you then have to
plug into your Lightning port.

Accessible and easy to use aren't necessarily the same thing.
iTunes is accessible, but it can be clunky to get around in. Even sighted

I have never used iTunes for windows, because I have a Mac. However, if friend

window eyes works with iTunes for windows and is the only screen reader which
Apple says does that. I know that a few years ago, and it literally has been

questions. One, Is it true, WE users, that iTunes works perfectly well with the
latest version of window eyes? And two, what about other screen readers? Do any
work well?

I use the Apple Smart Battery Case which is $100. It is like the other
juice pack described but with no switch. I love it though since the
phone is easy to get in or out of the case, you just fold the top part
back and can take it in or out. There is a bump on the back of the
case, but it is not overly large. The Apple Smart Battery Case fits in
my pocket very well and is a little thinner than the Otterbox Defender
case I used to use. I have an iPhone 6S but it also works with the 6.
Best investment I ever made. After seeing how much battery life I get,
my wife is jealous and has to wait till we get the 7 this fall. On
average, I get between 11 and 14 hours before my phone dips below 100
percent. It lasts about as long as the Plus phones.

Re: Battery juice packs

2016-05-02 Thread Sherrie
I have the Juice Pack on my 6S and I had one on my 5 before. Another point in
it’s favor is
that it is very protective as well. I can’t count how many times I dropped my 5
in the juice pack case and it had no damage. I have also dropped my 6S several
times even on tile and had no ill effects.

What I like
about the Mophie is that it has an actual physical switch, so you know when it

lost iPhone 6S has finally resurfaced after snow melt

Hi Travis and Listers,

Interesting you asked about the camera. Here now is really the final part of
this unfortunate episode.

My wife and I had to go to Vancouver on Wednesday which is where the closest
Apple Store is to where we live even though it’s an hour and 40 minutes flight.
Anyhow, I had made a genious bar appointment at 6 PM and explained to the nice
young lady who was helping me what happened. I did tell her she might want to
bring this to the attention of her manager and tell him/her that this phone had
been outside in the snow and cold and rain for 4 months and that maybe Apple
might be interested to examine it more closely. Whether she did I have no idea
and it’s out of my hands now. Since I was able to use the phone with Voiceover
she wanted to run a diagnostic on it. According to that the camera was also
damaged/not working and of course the screen. Interestingly enough the battery
test came back good even though I felt it discharged very quickly. I asked her
if she could tell whether there was water damage and she said the diagnostic
didn’t show that and she would have to look at the SIM tray for that.
Apparently the SIM tray is treated with some sort of material which turns pink
when it’s exposed to water. This of course is an easy way for Apple to check
for water damage since the SIM tray is easily accessible and one place where
water would of course enter almost immediately. I told her not to bother
because one of my employees commented on the fact that the SIM tray was pink
when I pulled it out after receiving the phone so apparently water had
definitely entered the phone.

There was no issue getting the phone replaced on Apple Care which we did and we
now have a new iPhone 6S which my wife is going to use. This will mean that
we’ll most likely sell her iPhone 6 64 Gb Silver which I bought for her at the
end of January last year after she came to Canada from the Philippines. I still
have to get Telus to unlock it, but that shouldn’t be a problem at this point.

Regards,

Sieghard

I'm a few days late here, but wow! I'm quite surprised it even partially works,
enough to be used by a blind person anyway. I wonder if the camera works? How
about the microphone? Headphone jack? Very interesting anyway. Thanks for the
update.

Subject: The final chapter, was: The story continues... Long lost iPhone 6S has
finally resurfaced after snow melt

Hi everybody,

Finally, here is the long awaited last chatper of my lost iPhone story.

yesterday the package with my iPhone 6S packed in rice arrived. Externally it
looks brand new with not a scratch on it. When I took out the SIM tray it
seemed like there was maybe a bit of moisture there so I left out the SIM tray
and stuck the iPhone in my toaster oven on a really low temperature for a
couple of hours just to maybe expel a bit more moisture from inside.

After that the moment came and I plugged it in. My wife was there and we
quietly watched, but the screen remained black. After about 2 minutes there was
no change and I thought that answered the question as to whether the iPhone was
still working after having been lying on the ground outside for 115 days, first
in snow and temperatures of up to -40 Celsius/Fahrenheit and as warm as +20
Celsius (68 Fahrenheit) and of course having gone through the process when the
snow and ice around it melted and so on. It was also exposed to the sun, back
in March there was another 10 inches of new snow over the course of a week and
in the week or two before my brother found it on April 15 it had rained lightly
a few times.

Anyhow, I left it plugged in and when I came back to my office 2 hours later I
thought I check it out. I pressed the home button and bingo, Voiceover was
there and asked me to enter my passcode. I did so and the phone unlocked. There
was of course no service since I got a new SIM back in December when I lost it
and I had also just installed a new router at my store so I had to reconnect to
WiFi. As soon as I did so the phone started dinging and binging away as emails

How to get an app out of a folder?

2016-05-02 Thread Pinky
Hi Everyone,

I wanted to move an app in to my Extra folder. But when I tried moving and
at to it I got it on to another app and it created another folder which I
did not want to do. So now how do I get the app out of that folder and
delete the folder?

Also what is the easiest way to move at to a folder without getting them on
top of another app and created another folder? Any suggestion on how to move
app to a folder the easiest way would be appreciated.

Re: Battery juice packs

2016-05-02 Thread Andy Baracco

What about those new thumb drives which are supposed to work on both I devices
and Windows devices? Can be sure of any of their names (one may have been
Istick), but I thought I read they were supposed to do exactly this (with the
help of an app which came supplied on the thumb drive).

Anyone know anything about these as an Itunes sync replacement?

iTunes is accessible, but it can be clunky to get around in. Even sighted

that window eyes works with iTunes for windows and is the only screen reader

has been years, GW micro had been touting this fact. But I know a lot of
changes have happened with both window eyes and iTunes since then I suspect
that this is the case of apple not keeping their propaganda, I mean their

screen readers two questions. One, Is it true, WE users, that iTunes works
perfectly well with the latest version of window eyes? And two, what about

Re: Battery juice packs

2016-05-02 Thread Mike Arrigo
I have the Mophie Juice Pack, love it. It's a great case and will more
than double your battery life.

Original message:

Hi there,

Sorry for the repeat email. Someone’s asking me this question, because
I get to choose it as a gift. Unsure of what to ask for, I figured I’d
ask again.

I’m guessing some of you use those little deals that are protective
cases for the iPhone which also serve as a charging unit or add extra
battery life to the phone. If so, what are good recommendations for
those kinds of things? I’ve never had one and want to get one that will
work well and last a while. I’m not even sure what they’re called, but
I thought someone once referred to them as battery juice packs, but I
don’t think that sounds right.

I’ve got an iPhone 6.

If someone wants to go into a little detail as to how it works, that’d
be fantastic!!

Thanks again.

Well what works here are Apple maps, Google maps, Navigon and Tomtom in
combination with blindsquare. None of the apps that have been mentioned here in
the past as good gps apps work here and we have no local accessible
alternatives as far as i’m aware. There are rumors about upcoming accessible
gps apps from time to time but they stay rumors or are limited to one town or
parts thereof.
Same goes for transit apps. I really wish Moovit would cover all of Sweden, we
dearly need something like that.
One local app or app combination that works very well in Sweden however is
Tågtavlan and Tågkoll, (train announcement and train check) two apps where you
can see what trains arrive on a station near you and when they arrive and with
the train checking app you can watch a departure and get info if it’s late or
if tracks have changed and the like.

Hi Don,

I think that for music, you'll just need to sign into iCloud when prompted. If
you want to use other iCloud sync features, such as contacts, you'll need the
iCloud control panel as well.

There are bombs and airplanes that come along
too. What fun!

Nice list, Mark, here are a few more I use although some of them require
hardware:

Sonos - requires Sonos music players, I think it's been discussed here enough
so I don't have to go into more details as to what exactly the Sonos system
does, if somebody doesn't know and wants to know go to www.sonos.com and check
the list archives for "Sonos" related posts.

Dropcam was then purchased
by Nest and the Dropcam app was replaced with the Nest app. Of course the video
feed is useless to me directly, but the cameras also transmit audio and you can
press a button in the app and speak through the camera.

Re: iTunes for windows and screen readers

2016-05-02 Thread 'Carol Pearson' via VIPhone

Hi all,

I wonder, seriously, if it's time to talk with Apple about this.

We almost all hate iTunes with a passion, ... and it's not surprising!
It's really unfair that VI's should have to put up with this all the
time ... It's so bad that Apple should let such a standard exist for
those of us who really need iTunes to be straightforward, work
flawlessly out of the box, have minimal changes made and ... heaps more!

We could all write to Accessability but, before we do, can some of those
who are knowledgeable perhaps give us all the things that don't
currently work or were broken with iOS 9? Then we could write
individually, perhaps.

Does anyone know if there are strong enough feelings within Applevis for
those who are obviously probably more clued up than the average iTunes
VI user about the problems and would back us in a meaningful way?

If anyone feels they could draft anything appropriate for us to tweak
then that may also be worth it before sending, so that we don't all say
exactly the same thing!

Perhaps they should be encouraged to write an app specially for us that
really works, that can only be used with an I device which is obviously
running VoiceOver (so could be detected). Yes, OK, theoretically, others
could turn on VO just to use the programme, and I guess some would as
many sighted people hate it - but maybe there are other safeguards Apple
could write into the programme, perhaps even being prepared to give us a
special ID code.

Well, I've opened a can of worms here and please remember these are just
thoughts off the top of my head ... so let's keep this thread going awhile!

get away with!

As a Window-Eyes user, I'd like to say that this is true, and in some ways it

However, the real truth, in my opinion, is that Apple makes it very hard for
Windows based screen readers to work well with iTunes.
From what I have heard from JAWS and NVDA users, is that some'things work fine
with those screen readers and some things don't.
That is true with Window-Eyes as well.
It really depends on how much one uses iTunes and what aspects the person uses
the most as to which screen reader might perform the best.
No matter which screen reader you use, the bottom line is you need to know how
to use it's advanced features if you are going to get anywhere with the Windows

GW Micro was the first ones to really work with Apple to make iTunes

2016-05-02 Thread Terri Stimmel
Hi everyone,

I have an Apple TV, generation three model. I want to know, is there a way
to turn down voiceover?
I haven't looked in the menus, but can't seem to find a way to do this.
This is very annoying to me, and very frustrated as well. I even tried
turning her down with the television remote. But this didn't seem to work
either. She is so loud, that when the end of the show comes up, and another
one is about to start, she talks over the end of the show. I do not like
this at all! I do not remember my other one doing this.

Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this issue? Thank you so much for any
help, or advice.

Terri

RE: How Do You Use iOS?

2016-05-02 Thread Paul and Paula Jordan

Sonos - requires Sonos music players, I think it's been discussed here

Netatmo: requires the Netatmo weather station

Thermostat: requires the Wi-Fi capable thermostat from
www.RadioThermostat.com

Nuheat: requires in-floor electric heating mats from Nuheat (the kind that
are installed underneath tile floors. The app allows me to control the
thermostats connected to each mat/room that has it, in my case two bathrooms
and my kitchen.

Nest: I use it not for thermostat, but I purchased 5 Dropcam Pro a couple of
years ago for security cameras for my retail store. Dropcam was then
purchased by Nest and the Dropcam app was replaced with the Nest app. Of
course the video feed is useless to me directly, but the cameras also
transmit audio and you can press a button in the app and speak through the
camera.

Google: That is the Google search app which also has those Google Now cards.

Transit: Gives youtransit information for many cities

Parcel: for parcel tracking

Whats App: one of the social media apps I use in addition to Skype, fAcebook

Re: Question About Twitter Clients for IOS

2016-05-02 Thread Ed Worrell
Hey Keith,

Yes in Twitteriffic it’s called the today view. You can do this one of two
ways. I
1. Double tap on the button labeled SideBar, Flick to the right until you hear
the Today option, double tap on this, and than you are presented with many
options most of which will be selected. This is the screen that will show all
of your recent notification.

This is how I have my home screen of the app set up…
2. You can reassign the mention or messages button at the top of the screen.
How to do so…
1. Double tap and hold on the second tap (until you hear the hold noise(,
Twitteriffic will tell you that you can change the last two buttons, it will
than give you options that you can change the buttons to, find the today option
and double tap on it, and you will change one of the tabs to the today view.
This is just a quicker way to get to the today screen. I have the third menu
button as the today button.
Here is how my menu bar reads…
SideBar, Home, Mentions, Today, and compose.

Just a note, you can only change the Mentions and messages tabs.

I hope that this helps.

In the area where all your folder names are displayed, you'll find an edit
button. Tap on that, and then you'll see a reorder button next to each folder.
Double-tap and hold on that reorder button, and then when you hear the tritone
sound, drag up or down. Do it slowly, though, and make sure you hear feedback
every single time. I would move it one or two folders at a time, maximum three.
Things tend to go a little funny when you go too fast, and you lose feedback
from VoiceOver, and sometimes things will move to places you didn't mean them
to go.

Battery juice packs

2016-05-02 Thread Jim Portillo
Hi there,

Sorry for the repeat email. Someone's asking me this question, because I
get to choose it as a gift. Unsure of what to ask for, I figured I'd ask
again.

I'm guessing some of you use those little deals that are protective cases
for the iPhone which also serve as a charging unit or add extra battery life
to the phone. If so, what are good recommendations for those kinds of
things? I've never had one and want to get one that will work well and last
a while. I'm not even sure what they're called, but I thought someone once
referred to them as battery juice packs, but I don't think that sounds
right.

I've got an iPhone 6.

If someone wants to go into a little detail as to how it works, that'd be
fantastic!!

Thanks again.

Jim

Re: Question About Twitter Clients for IOS

2016-05-02 Thread Ed Worrell
Hello,

There is Tweetings, this one is a very popular iOS Twitter client. I personally
use the Twitteriffic application. What do you find difficult about finding
ReTweets, being added to a list, etc? Maybe I can help.

Thanks,

Ed

Re: Itunes

2016-05-02 Thread Alan Paganelli
You have to use iTunes but yes you can rip your CD collection. I have only
about 60 or 70 CDs but I ripped them all using iTunes quite some time ago and
only consider my CDs as backup copies sense I bought and paid for the disks.
When I want to get new music I just get it through iTunes even on my iPhone and
get them downloaded directly to my iPhone. Then the next time I sync with
iTunes, they get added to my library.

Re: VDR iCloud Sync

2016-05-02 Thread Mary Otten
Hi Harry,
If you get a solution to this, please let us know. Winston said he did not know
why I was having the problem and would look into it. No further explanation
yet. I too have found that if I download a book or just move maybe one book, it
goes. But if I move several, no luck.

Re: Itunes

2016-05-02 Thread Richard Turner

You can import them from your CDs with itunes.
Open iTunes and put a cd in your computer and it will probably at least bring
up the dialog.
If not, You may have to learn how to get into the preferences in iTunes to
adjust the settings.
You may want to call Apple Accessibility as it will be a lot easier to have
someone talk you through it the first time, rather than having the steps
written out.

VDR iCloud Sync

2016-05-02 Thread Harry Bell
Can anyone update me on where VDR iCloud Sync is up to? On my iPad Air, running
latest release on iOS public beta testing, I recreated the VDR Folders which
had disappeared when I first upgraded to VDR iCloud sync. First of all, I
yesterday recreated just a few Folders and moved one or two books into them:
they managed to sync over immediately to my iPhone 5s running iOS 9.3.1 and
latest VDR. So today I recreated several more folders on my iPad and organised
all 127 books into them. But when I checked on my iPhone 5s, while all today's
new folders are there and all of them incorporate the Sort By Title changes I
made today, NONE of the books I moved into folders today on my iPad appear in
the VDR Folders on my iPhone 5s! I have turned both iPad and iPhone off and
tgen on again, but no change. Is there something else I need to do to force the
sync to take place?
Thanks
Harry Bell

hi,
For us, even if the friend you're against has glass dice (don't
think it even exists) we will not even know, partly because we
can't see it. But not sure even if sighted can see each other's

Thanks for the feedback, Keith, maybe as more Voiceover users buy the QardioArm
hardware and request full accessibility of the app it will happen. I’ll
certainly check it out and send my feedback to the company.
I guess I am going to send my Amazon unit back, though, since after I spoke
with the customer service guy he must have assumed I definitely wanted to
return it although I hadn’t quite decided. In any case, a few minutes after the
call I received an email telling me that the return process had been initiated.
Ordering from the company did end up costing $9.50 shipping, but for some
reason they did not charge any taxes (we have 12% sales taxes here in British
Columbia) so while the Amazon unit cost $124.99 + the taxes for a total of
$139.99 (that is with free shipping) the one from QardioArm was just $104 +
$9.50 shipping for a total of $113.50 so about $26.50 less.

I got my Qardioarm last October. By chance I had seen my physician earlier that
day. The readings were nearly identical, within only 1 or 2 off, quite
surprising to me given the natural variability of BP readings.

I’ve contacted Support twice about the app not being totally accessible, though
I can get readings of blood pressure and pulse from each reading, and previous
readings, without difficulty.

There is an option for the device to take 3 consecutive readings with only a
brief pause between them, but I haven’t been able to change to this setting
from within the app.

They did tell me in November that they had engineering working on it, but by
March it still wasn’t fixed. They did seem receptive, again in March, when I
pointed this out. I haven’t checked this functionality recently.

The QardioArm is not a wrist unit, it is an upper arm unit and is supposed to
be clinically accurate. Of course I would check with a doctor if it showed my
blood pressure to be way higher than what I would expect.

I have not used the Bluetooth monitors but the wrist units I have tried all
read 40 plus points high. Be sure to check your new unit against a known good
arm monitor or one at the doctor’s office.

While I was in rehab following an accident last year, an aide used a wrist
monitor on me and read more than 100 points high. He was going to write it in
the log until I complained. We settled on a reading that was only 40 points
high and I told the nurse.

Hi Joe,

I just ordered the QardioArm wireless blood pressure monitor which connects to

Hi Dan,

Thanks for the info on the Compass app. I did find the level after you inform
me where it was. I did go to the compass in settings
and true north was turned off. I turned it on and check it and it still was off
by a long ways. I turned it back off again and when
outside and it seemed to be a lot closer now. I think I can find my way to the
North Pole now. Ha ha.

Hi,

Try going to Settings then Compass and toggle "use true north" on or off and
see if that helps.

Dan

Hi Everyone.

When I open the native Compass app it does not show the correct direction. Is
there a way you have to set it or calibrate it?
