Re: Problem with Email Since Updating to iOS10

2016-09-28 Thread Wayne Merritt
I have my Gmail setup with labels and filters through the web view.
However when I lookat my mail on the iPhone, the labels don't appear
along side each message like they do in the web view of Gmail. I can
generally tell which list the message is from by the subject of the
message. And, if I can't, then I will save that message to be read
later on the computer. All the labels are still there with the
messages, but they aren't being read on the iPhone in the Mail app
like they are read in web view of Gmail. Go figure.

Advice for those with the new iPhone 7 or 7 Plus

2016-09-28 Thread Wayne Merritt
Greetings. I know it is a generic subject, but this is a cautionary
tale for those that have the new iPhone 7 or 7 Plus phones. If you
have any hesitation of your phone not working as expected, don't wait
a long time or think that the problem will go away or will fix itself,
before you take your device back to an Apple Store. In my own case, I
accidentally dropped my new 7 in a bathtub with about 4 inches of
water. I pulled the phone out, dried it off, but noticed that the
speaker did not seem as loud. I took my phone to the Apple Store and
had a technician look at it. He did several tests with the speaker and
the microphone, and he did find that a mike was not working as
expected. Then, no questions asked, he swapped my ten day old phone
out with a brand new one of the same color and gig size as my last
one. I took the new one home and was able to restore from my latest
ICloud backup, which happened to be that afternoon. I've heard on the
Macbreak Weekly podcast that the Apple Stores have a certain number of
phones available to swap out in these cases, and they will do the
swapping no questions asked if they can verify the problem. The deal
is you have to take your phone inwithin the first two weeks or so
after you get it. IN my case, the phone was advertised as being water
resistant, and a mike evidently had some water damage after the
phone's swim in the tub. However, if you hear hissing or other strange
noises from your new phone, then it is worth taking a trip to the
Apple Store.

Kind regards,
Wayne

Hi sieghard and all,

When you have a thread onscreen, you can flick left several times from the
start of the next message to find a More actions button that has the option to
delete a message. That's another way to do it.

Hi,

This only works on devices with touch ID. In accessibility settings is an
option called Home Button. In that is an option called Rest finger to open.
Turn that on, and you're all set.

Re: Google Cromecast

2016-09-28 Thread Brett

Hi,

Chrome cast does pretty much the same thing as the Apple TV, but just
works slightly differently.

With the chrome Cast, The apps you want to chrome cast from need to
support it. But don't worry, when I had a Chrome cast everything I
wanted to use had the Chrome Cast button enabled. So things like
Netflix, Pandora, Spotify and BBC iPlayer etc. I suspect you will never
get any joy here from Apple music, but...

With teh chromecast you set things up on the phone, then click the
Chrome Cast button to send it to the Chrome Cast, where it then takes
over the streaming, so you can then turn your phone off if you want and
the stream will keep playing.

Hope this helps,

Brett.

Hi guys. I'm not sure if anyone is aware of this but Roger released an update
that allows Siri capability and other features. Do not update to this version
unless you want a hand warmer. Whenever this app is in the background, even if
it's not in the app switcher, the phone gets really hot and it eats your
battery like there's no tomorrow. If you did update to this version, I suggest
you downgrade to an earlier version as soon as possible. This is a horrible
update and I hope the Roger team addresses this soon.

WARNING! Do Not Update Roger

2016-09-28 Thread Shawn Krasniuk

Re: Accessible ringtone app

2016-09-28 Thread Todd Bernhard
May I humbly suggest my AutoRingtone apps. Some are free. They let you
create talking Caller ID ringtones (with optional sound effects) that say
whatever you type, such as "Jeremy, your phone is ringing. The President is
calling." in a variety of text-to-speech voices.

Here's a link to one of the free ones:

RE: IOS 10 e-mail question

2016-09-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
And to add to Chris's explanation, if it's a tread and you want to delete
particular emails in the thread but not the entire thread, you have to flick
down to "Expand Thread", then you can flick through the emails in the thread
and use the delete option of the rotor to delete them.
Also, if you open any email there still is the usual delete button just above
the home key, just remember that if the email is part of a thread using that
button in any email that is part of the thread will delete the entire thread. I
think this is actually something that if it's intended should be changed by
Apple, it makes more sense that I can delete a particular single email which is
part of a thread with the delete button that is at the botrtom of said email.
I'm just not sure if it's a bug or intended to work the way it does now.

To delete a single email just flick up with one finger and double tap delete.
If it is a group or thread of messages, just flick up and double tap delete
thread.

Hope this helps,

RE: getting all of your notifacations not to be read and deleted on the lock screen of your phone in IOS 10

2016-09-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Casey and Ann,

OK, one of you wants them not to be on the lock screen and the other does want
them, maybe you should swap phones *smile*.
Anyhow, Casey, if you don't want notifications on the lock screen go to
Settings > Notifications and for each notification that appears on the lock
screen (messages, mail, reminders etc. go into that category and make sure
Include in Notification Centre is On and Show on Lockscreen is Off. This will
then do what you want.
Ann, make sure you do say "Show on Lockscreen" for the notifications you want
and also make sure you go into Voiceover settings and check/turn on Speak All
Notifications.

I get the notification sound on the lock screen, but no words until I take the
phone out of my pocket and swipe. Wish it would just speak them when they

Hi Chip,

I personally decided to try the WooPower speaker due to my hearing loss. My
hearing aids are bluetooth compatable.Unfortunately, I could be crossing a
street when new information is being spoken. When info is being updated, a
significant amount of environmental sound is blocked out. The WooPower has
enough volume boost that I can hear it much better than my phone when walking.
Wearing the speaker on my wrist also means one less thing to coordinate--guide
dog, support cane, and treat pouch.

Have a nice day,

Hi Kevin,

I don’t think I quite understand the usefulness of this speaker; why did you
get it for “gps use”? How does that help, and why would you prefer it to a
bluetooth headset?

Thanks,

Hi.

If you look at the guide for the Woopower blue tooth wrist speaker, it says the
battery life of the speaker is 48 hours of standby time. I wondered how long
this would be with the battery being used for constant sound, so I put it
through its paces. I started listening to an FM station at about 11:15 in the
morning. I listened to the pitiful Bungles game against the Broncos, and that
ended at about 4:15 in the afternoon. I then switched to listening to the Reds
game on blue tooth, and that lasted about another half hour. I then switched
to the Padres game, and the battery finally gave up the ghost at about 5:15 in
the afternoon. This means that the battery gives about 6 hours of use. I
don’t know if it would be much shorter with blue tooth, since I used it in
radio mode most of the time. In any case, six hours of use isn’t bad, and, in
my case, this should give me a nice day’s worth of use. Besides, I got the
speaker for GPS use, so it won’t be used as much.

Just for your information.

Have a blessed day, and don’t work too hard.

2016-09-28 Thread Casey

Hi I have an iPhone six S plus.
And when I get notifications and the phone is locked i can look at them

Is this normal if so that is okay.
But if you can change that so you can hear the sound of your
notifications coming but not letting you see them until you go in to the
notification center that would be A bit better.

Hi all, sorry to ask this question that I know has been asked before on a list.
I lost most of my previous messages when upgrading to Sierra. How to I return
the logon screen to not press the home key to get to the password screen. My
wife hates the new way of doing things to get in to her iPhone or iPad. I have
changed my phone but can’t remember what steps I took.
Thanks for any help.

Re: The Just Press Record app is muting VoiceOver

Hi,

I haven't used the app for a while. I'll make sure I can confirm this behavior
and then contact the dev. I encourage anyone having the issue to contact them.
I'm pretty sure they made VoiceOver improvements once, so they will probably be
willing to do it again.

Best,

Re: saving passwords

2016-09-28 Thread Wayne Merritt
If you have iCloud Key Chain turned on it should ask you
automatically. You can also get the free 1Password app and enter your
account log in information there. I use both, but I am getting in the
habbit of writing the important passwords down in 1Password.

Re: The Just Press Record app is muting VoiceOver

Try rev voice recorder. I've found that this one works pretty good. I
use drop vox myself because it's so simple, but that's not a good choice
if you want to retain the files on your phone unless you have drop box
installed.

RE: Problem with Email Since Updating to iOS10

I found the inbox where the collapsed Gmail mailboxes are located on my iPhone.
It's a little less convenient but at least I found them.

Thanks.

Hi Judy,
If you open the Mail app and then are in the view where you see your Gmail
account, it will probably say collapsed. Double tap on it, it will say
expanded. At that point, you should see those folders.

RE: Is their such a thing as a Lightning Extension Cable?

2016-09-28 Thread Alan Lemly
Ari,

Thanks for clarifying the connectors used by the YiKaiEn iReader. Now I
understand why a lightning extension cable with male and female lightning
connections on either end is needed.

I've not found very many lightning extension cables on Amazon and I'm not sure
I've seen any listed as Apple certified. I did just find the Lightning
Extension Cable (2 foot, Black) for iPhone 7 / 7 Plus / 6 / 6S / SE, iPad Pro,
and all Lightning Accessories; Full Functionality for Video, Data, Audio & More
Through Male to Female 8-pin Cable. dockXtender for Lightning by CableJive. But
at $25.95 for a 2-foot cable, it isn't cheap. I perused the Amazon reviews and
like most such reviews, they were across the board.

Here is the link to the item at Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/Lightning-Accessories-Functionality-dockXtender-CableJive/dp/B00GP08858/ref=sr_1_1?s=wireless

=UTF8=1475095898=1-1=lightning+extension+cable+Apple+certified

That's a long link that will no doubt break in most email clients so here's a
TinyURL to the same thing:

Alan, if I'm correctly understanding The reader that Russ has, it just has a
male lightning connector on it directly, with no cable in between the reader
and the male lightning connector. If Russl didn't have a case on his phone,
this product would work completely fine. Since he does, there isn't enough room
for the connector to go into the phone. What he wants is a cable with a female
lightning port on one end, and a male lightning port on the other, so he can
connect the mail lightning port to his phone and the female lightning Port to
the reader.

Thanks,

Ari

Russ,

I see that the product description for the YiKaiEn iReader specifically
mentions to remove the item being connected from any case.

I'm still confused from your description exactly what you want in terms of a
cable. How are you connecting the YiKaiEn iReader to your iPod? I'm assuming
you're using some cable with a standard USB connector on one end which you're
plugging into the YiKaiEn iReader and plugging the other end into your iPod.
You don't say whether your iPod uses the old 30-pin connector or a lightning
connector. If the latter, lightning cables from Apple seem to have the smallest
connectors for use with an iDevice housed in an Otterbox case. If an Apple
cable doesn't work to connect your iPad in its case to the YiKaiEn iReader, I'm
not sure any third party cable will either even if it is Apple certified.

The YiKaiEn iReader comes with a lightning connector on one end and a usb
connector on the other end. I can connect the YiKaiEn iReader with no problem
to my ipod touch. If your ios device has a case, you can’t connect the YiKaiEn
iReader to it. The reader doesn’t come with a lightning cable.

Russ,

I'm a bit confused about what exactly you need in order to use the YiKaiEn
iReader with your iPad. I'm assuming the Otterbox case prevents your using the
cable that came with the YiKaiEn iReader because the lightning plug on it is
configured so it doesn't fit. I'm not sure an extension cable is the best way
to go because I didn't see many of those listed as being Apple certified on
Amazon.

What type of plug connects to the actual YiKaiEn iReader on the cable that came
with it? If it is a common type of connector, you might have better luck
finding an Apple certified lightning cable that has a small lightning plug
which will work with the Otterbox case and the appropriate connector on the end
which connects to the YiKaiEn iReader. Just another alternative you might wish
to consider.

Good luck.

Hi,

I'm trying to figure out what the widget Siri App Suggestions on the Today
screen does in iOS 10.

I read Jonathan's book but I don't remember running across this specific issue.

Can someone please explain to me what it is supposed to do?

Thanks in advance, Keith

Problem with Email Since Updating to iOS10

2016-09-28 Thread Judy Holloway
Hi. I updated to iOS10 last night, and now I have a problem with Email on my
iPhone 5S. On my Gmail account, I have a folder for the Emails to the
Blindtech list, and a folder for the Emails to the VIPhone list. On my
computer, and in all my iPhone updates in the past, the mail goes into these
folders. After the update, these folders no longer show up on my iPhone, and
itt looks like the Emails from these lists do not reach my phone. These
folders were created in my Gmail account on the web. I've also looked at the
Filter option on my phone, and this does not help. how can I fix this?

Thanks.

Hi,

If you're getting a new phone, it will be running iOS 10, so updating your
current phone is a good idea anyway. I would think there would be less chance
of something going wrong when your backup is made from a phone running the same
operating system as the phone you are restoring the backup onto.

Actually, what might have happened is when you get the software update and

Sometimes, you don’t realize that is the actual button and you double tap it. I

Re: Automatic update??

2016-09-28 Thread John Panarese
Actually, what might have happened is when you get the software update and
choose to do it later, the selection is actually to download overnight.
Sometimes, you don’t realize that is the actual button and you double tap it. I
have had a few clients do this and I traced the steps to them accidentally
choosing to update overnight.

RE: Automatic update??

2016-09-28 Thread Jim Portillo
I guess that’s what happened. I thought I had no choice but to agree to the
terms, even when I chose to install it Later. It must have downloaded anyway.

Anyway, no harm, but it did surprise me.

I’m getting an iPhone 7 today, which I know will come with IOS 10 anyway, so I
guess I’m getting a sneak preview with this installation on my 6.

Hi Jim,

iOS does not upgrade itself unless you download the update and agree twice
separately to the terms and conditions. Once that is done then yes, iOS may
install at a later point without intervention. Anyhow, sounds like it's done,
but the good news is that there aren't any major bugs in iOS 10 which weren't
also in iOS 9 and there are some new features especially the ability to move
apps which are very nice.

mine may have been bought from apple store, and says t-mobile. But when I
updated my phone in iTunes and went to phone activation it said
“Congratulations, your iPhone has been unlocked”. I don’t know if this is
because my sim card was in a iPhone SE that was unlocked, or because I paid for
it all at once. All I know is my friend with a verizon sim card was able to use

Re: Is their such a thing as a Lightning Extension Cable?

2016-09-28 Thread englishrider91
Alan, if I'm correctly understanding The reader that Russ has, it just has a
male lightning connector on it directly, with no cable in between the reader
and the male lightning connector. If Russl didn't have a case on his phone,
this product would work completely fine. Since he does, there isn't enough room
for the connector to go into the phone. What he wants is a cable with a female
lightning port on one end, and a male lightning port on the other, so he can
connect the mail lightning port to his phone and the female lightning Port to
the reader.

Thanks,
Ari

RE: Voice Over accessibility for Sonos

2016-09-28 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I can only add my praise to Sonos, I bought my first Sonos players in 2009 and
they are still going strong. In those first years you could use most of the
Sonos features with Voiceover, but the app definitely needed improvement, there
were unlabelled buttons and so on. I was quite active in 2010 and 2011 along
with Neil Barnfather to get Sonos to realize that accessibility should be a
priority with an app for equipment which was of great interest to the visually
impaired. Fortunately after a couple of years of not getting very far Sonos
apparently had a change of heart and ever since I think 2012 or 2013 at the
latest all versions of the Sonos app have been wonderfully accessible. In the
beginning TruePlay tuning was not working with Voiceover, but they have also
fixed that and it works fine now. All I can say is go for it, you won't regret
it and you won't regret spending the money on Jonathan's book, either,
especially as a new Sonos user..

Sieghard

Hi Hope,
I don't think there is a way to actually see the list of messages, except by
first expanding the thread when you're in the list of mail. Flick down and
double tap on expands thread. Then flick right through the messages. If you
have a preview on, you will then see the preview of each one as you flick
through. But there isn't a way of double tapping and seeing that whole list.
When the thread is not expanded, double tapping on it opens the top message in
the thread, in which case you can see that message. And then the flicking down
for Messages is supposed to work to let you see the rest of the messages in the
thread. But you have to make sure your rotor is on Messages.

RE: Is their such a thing as a Lightning Extension Cable?

2016-09-28 Thread Alan Lemly

Please describe what the cable you want needs at each end in order to make the
connection you want.

Good luck.

currently do this. I need a Lightning Extension Cable to do this?

Automatic update??

2016-09-28 Thread Jim Portillo
The weirdest thing happened last night. I'd left my iPhone 6, still running
version 9, charging while I was in a different room. After a while, I came
to my room, where the phone was charging and found that it had automatically
updated to IOS 10. I must have somehow downloaded the update, but I
personally didn't install it. I just figured I'd wait till I upgraded
phones. Has anyone else had this happen to you?

Anyway, it updated, and I had no choice but to finalize things, going
through the upgrade and setup.

So far, I've just been using basic features the way I normally do, but I
know I'm going to run into things and questions.

For instance, every time I hear an icon spoken, I hear the iPhone say
something like SLNC800. What does that mean?

I also see there are more actions to choose from. Interesting.

Jim

EarPods extension cable

Thanks for doing that research. Many others quite clearly state that they work
with EarPods and let the remote continue to function but I don’t want to fall
foul of that not being the case again so I’ve ordered this and it’s coming
tomorrow so I’ll keep you posted. It does seem a bit odd that it needs a remote
of it’s own but I’ll let the list know how I get on.

Hi Bill,

Do a three-finger tap after touching a message in your inbox, and the preview
will be read.

Best,

Hi Hope,
I don't think there is a way to actually see the list of messages, except by
first expanding the thread when you're in the list of mail.

Major Problem with the Capital one app

2016-09-28 Thread Jed Barton

Hey guys,
\
Today i went to use the capital one app, and found a huge bug.
I can login, get to my cards, but when i went to setup a payment, this
is where the problem started.
I typed in the payment info and went to done, and could get no further.
I was then placed at the screen where it was saying like alarm set and
all that nonsense. I couldn't confirm the payment. Anyone else seen
this problem? I ahd to log in to the website to make the payment Any
ideas?

Hey Jed. As Daniel mentioned, it's a well known bug in iOS 10. Restarting your

Re: Is their such a thing as a Lightning Extension Cable?

2016-09-28 Thread Russ Kiehne
The YiKaiEn iReader comes with a lightning connector on one end and a usb
connector on the other end. I can connect the YiKaiEn iReader with no problem
to my ipod touch. If your ios device has a case, you can’t connect the YiKaiEn
iReader to it. The reader doesn’t come with a lightning cable.

Subject: RE: Is their such a thing as a Lightning Extension Cable?

Good luck.

I would like to use the YiKaiEn iReader SDHC SDXC Micro SD OTG Card Reader with
my ipad mini 4. I’m using the otterbox case and because of this I can’t
currently do this. I need a Lightning Extension Cable to do this?
