Mary, I can see what you're saying and agree with you. I was only thinking of
the second rotor to try to separate things but that would only half solve the
problem because I do find it quite tiring! :-) Okay, I'm going to keep thinking
about it and do appreciate all the feedback I've had so far.

it doesn't hurt to have a sighted individual who can help out. Otherwise, it

RE: fixing the way siri says someones name

2017-01-19 Thread Alan Lemly
Provided you're using iOS 10.x, you can add custom pronunciations. Go to
Settings, General, Accessibility, Speech, Pronunciations and add the words you
wish. You type in the word being mispronounced in the phrase field and in the
substitution field either type in the correct phonetic pronunciation or dictate
it. I'll warn you that dictating has been spotty at best with iOS 10.2.

Moving on from Siri pronouncing names wrongly, can one give voice-over: in my

The everyday word being comic which Samantha/Karen pronounces as "carmic".

The future of the nation will neither rise nor will it fall by it, but I want

If she pronounces comic as carmic, which she does, she should pronounce copy as

Re: WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK?

2017-01-19 Thread Mary Otten
To each their own. I have had three android devices, make that four, I forgot
about my first Nexus seven. And none of them worked all the time with the angle
gestures. They just don't for me. Hit and miss. And that's inefficient. And
judging from the amount of complaints I've heard, I am surely not alone.

Mary, I agree with you that more up and down flicks should be used. In fact I
would like to see a whole new design of the rotor as those with wrist problems
or finger weakness cannot use the rotor at all. I have a friend who cannot make
even the beginning of the movement for the rotor, and it makes it very hard for
her to do a lot of the things I take for granted such as reading by letter or
word to add or delete something. I can do the motion with my fingers and wrist
but sometimes I find even I get very tired if I need to use it a lot.

Re: WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK?

2017-01-19 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I don't find the angle gestures in Talk Back to be impossible to use. I
don't recall a time when I struggled with them. I know some complain
about them, but some iPhone users complain about the roter as well.

I personally prefer the Talk Back approach. The things I access the most
in the roter are the granularity settings, e.g. character, word, line,
and in Talk Back, I can change these with a flick up or down. If I want
to get to more options, I can bring up a context menu and then just
access them out of a list, as Mary describes.

IMHO, the roter is overused in VoiceOver. Of course, I just may have too
many items in it. The fact that VoiceOver may put me somewhere else in
the roter, is nice when VoiceOver guesses right, but it can be a pain
when it guesses wrong, and I've got to twist my way back to the settings
I want to change.

I agree that the Talk Back gesture set is too limited. Hopefully the
Talk Back and Android developers are listening to us and will open it up
some in the near future.

Sorry, richard. I guess I missed that. I read the message, the first one, but
missed the fact that two actual rotors were apparently being suggested. That
would be a problem and wouldn't solve the twist problem that some people have.
That gesture is the hardest one for people coming to iOS, just like the right
angles are the hardest for people coming to android.

The fly in the ointment with the talkback approach is that they have very few
gestures, and many of those they do have are the right angle gestures which
cause a lot of people a lot of problems. It is true that you can change the

I do not have a problem with the rotor the way it is. I personally find it
easy to switch between words letters headings etc. This is perhaps because I
do not have that many items included in the rotor. The one I use the most is
headings and characters and volume.
Cheers,

I do think it would be a good idea if the top level menu which is accessed
via the rotor could be made shorter. I think they did a good job with the
language rotor, pick the language setting and then flick up and down to
select your language. Maybe they could do something like that splitting up
web elements and document navigation type elements, such as word line and
character. Of course, it can be argued that that is an artificial
separation, because you do often want to navigate by words on the web or, in
a document, maybe by headings. But nothing is perfect, and I do think fewer
twists of the rotor and Moore up and down flicks could be used.

Re: WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK?

2017-01-19 Thread Marie
This is one of the few places where I think that Talk Back on the Android is
doing a better job. Instead of the rotor there is the Global context menu or
the Local context menu. Talk Back will now let you change the gesture to
invoke either of these menus and once there, you use the normal swiping that
we are all accustomed to. I got to try this out with a newer version of Talk
Back and was quite impressed. In the past the gesture to invoke these menus
was all but impossible to use.

RE: Need Help with Spelling Out Words When Using VoiceDream Reader

2017-01-19 Thread Alan Lemly
Pam,

I think the best way to accomplish your goal is to pause the TTS voice speaking
in Voice Dream right when you hear the term you need spelled. Place your finger
in the middle of the screen which should put you in text selection mode. Do the
rotor twist gesture until you hear words and single finger swipe down until you
hear VoiceOver speak the word you want spelled. Do a single finger swipe up to
move just before that word and engage the rotor until you hear characters and
then single finger swipe down until the word is spelled.

Good luck.

Re: blocking phone calls

2017-01-19 Thread Christopher Chaltain
You don't need to add a number to your contact list before blocking
them. Give the following a try:

1) Find the number you want to block in your recents list.
2) Double tap on the more options button.
3) If you swipe down through the list of options on this page, you won't
find the block this caller button. Instead, do the following:
4) Touch the tabs on the bottom of the screen or swipe right until you
get to them.
5) Now start swiping left, and just after you leave the row of tabs
across the bottom, you find the text "block this caller."

6) Double tap on that text.
7) Double tap on the block this caller button on the next dialog and
you're done.

Hi Vicki, unfortunately not. You will have an them to your contacts,
and then simply go to more info, Andy hit the block button if there
is a call that is recent from them in your history. If not, Dane you
will have to simply use D method of adding them to your contacts, and
then going to settings/phone, and then finding the contact that you
have added to your phone and then blocking them that way.

All of these numbers are from surveys and other types of spam

RE: Need Help with Spelling Out Words When Using VoiceDream Reader

2017-01-19 Thread Richard Turner
Unfortunately, navigating by characters is not an option within Voice Dream
Reader, but if you pause the reading in time or even navigate back a sentence,
you can slide your finger down the screen and find the line where the word
occurs and use the standard VoiceOver gestures to get to the word and spell it
out.

I hope that helps,
Richard

I wasn't suggesting two rotors. I was suggesting submenus off of the rotor
which would lessen the number of rotor twists you have to do to get the item.
We now have the actions rotor and the language rotor. Those are not actually
rotors. They are menus off of the rotor, and you get to the items by flicking
up or down. I am suggesting that we could have more of that sort of thing. It
isn't always convenient to operate your phone with two hands, which the two
finger method you propose requires.

Re: WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK?

2017-01-19 Thread Michael Feir
Remember that you can remove and re-order options on the rotor. I have the
majority of options added to my rotor. However, I've customised the order
of options so that I don't have to turn the rotor a great deal to get to
what I need in most circumstances. I've also removed options which I simply
wasn't using. Personally, I wouldn't mind having some sort of multi-rotor
selection but I think some people would find it harder remembering which
options were on which rotor. The way things are now, you'll eventually get
to what you need if you keep turning the rotor.

One thing I definitely support is making certain that any critical options
aren't exclusively acesivle via the rotor. I'm glad you can now change
typing mode inside the settings app rather than strictly through the rotor.
The typing mode deeply effects user experience and I used to run into cases
where beginners who couldn't master the rotor found it very difficult to do
much with their devices once they acidentally trapped themselves in a
typing mode which was hard for them.

Re: WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK?

2017-01-19 Thread Mary Otten
I wasn't suggesting two rotors. I was suggesting submenus off of the rotor
which would lessen the number of rotor twists you have to do to get the item.
We now have the actions rotor and the language rotor. Those are not actually
rotors. They are menus off of the rotor, and you get to the items by flicking
up or down. I am suggesting that we could have more of that sort of thing. It
isn't always convenient to operate your phone with two hands, which the two
finger method you propose requires.

Re: WHAT DO YOU ALL THINK?

2017-01-19 Thread Richard Turner

I think having two rotors would be worse for most.
To save on wrist strain, try using one finger on each hand and slide them in
opposite directions, but parallel with each other. So, start with one finger of
each hand in about the middle of the screen, move the left one slowly upward,
and the right one slowly downward, that will turn the rotor clockwise. When you
run out of room, just put the two fingers back at your starting point and
repeat.
HTH,
Richard

I do think it would be a good idea if the top level menu which is accessed via
the rotor could be made shorter. I think they did a good job with the language
rotor, pick the language setting and then flick up and down to select your
language. Maybe they could do something like that splitting up web elements and
document navigation type elements, such as word line and character. Of course,
it can be argued that that is an artificial separation, because you do often
want to navigate by words on the web or, in a document, maybe by headings. But
nothing is perfect, and I do think fewer twists of the rotor and Moore up and
down flicks could be used.

Hello you are definitely not alone. I notice that there are times when I'm
trying to activate the roter and nothing happens. Then there are other times
when the slightest hand gesture causes me to quickly zip by the options
available on the roter. I'm not sure what the fix would be.

HI all,

I've not written for a good while but have had something nagging around that I
wanted views upon, so here it is!

As our i devices have grown in features, so I have found that the rotor
system has become rather more of an irksome task. I have most of the
items offered on my rotor and have noticed a certain amount of wrist
strain in sometimes needing to turn it several times in succession on

I am wondering if this rotor needs to be re-constructed, perhaps having
two so that you can divide the rotor into better sections and change the
rotor setting (to 1 or 2) via a designated keystroke.

First, am I the only one who finds this a little cumbersome and,
secondly, what do you think to the kind of idea I'd like to suggest?

I look forward to receiving some feedback on this issue.

Hallo Lovely People!

A friend, from Australia, a fellow dogless guide dog owner, and myself wish
to start off an email list, like this one, but for VIPs in the Kitchen. We are
thinking to focus on techniques/devices/technology/apps and general shared
experience. Encouraging podcast type contributions as well. hoefully, it would
be international, but with English as the shared language, just for ease of
communication.

Now, I see, from Google, that it looks easy enough to set up a new group,
is Google the easiest one? Can people, who don't have gmail accounts access
such a group? Or, should I be looking at free lists?

In short (she always says that!) All advice very welcome, as, indeed, are
all or any of you who might want to join such a group As there are only two
of us right now!! I am foing marvelous things with my Thermomix machine, others
have slow cookers, one pot cookers and others perform perfectly well manually,
so, what is your thing? You might be a King/Queen on the kitchen, or flustered
by Marmite on toast! No matter, all will be most welcome!!

Need Help with Spelling Out Words When Using VoiceDream Reader

2017-01-19 Thread Ekstrand, Pamela A. -ND
All,

I am using VoiceDream Reader to read a technical manual from BookShare, and
there are times when I need to hear the spelling of a word character by
character.

I am somewhat of a new user to VoiceDream, and I cannot seem to figure out the
easiest way to accomplish this.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,
Pam

Hi Vicki, unfortunately not. You will have an them to your contacts, and
then simply go to more info, Andy hit the block button if there is a call
that is recent from them in your history. If not, Dane you will have to
simply use D method of adding them to your contacts, and then going to
settings/phone, and then finding the contact that you have added to your
phone and then blocking them that way.

Hi Vicki, as I stated before you need to add them to your contacts 1st in
order to find the block button. If you have Artie done this, and you still
can't find it please let me know off list with the way that I can reach you so
that we can work with this together. I would like to help you get this done.

Hi Vicki, unfortunately not. You will have an them to your contacts, and
then simply go to more info, Andy hit the block button if there is a call that
is recent from them in your history. If not, Dane you will have to simply use D
method of adding them to your contacts, and then going to settings/phone, and
then finding the contact that you have added to your phone and then blocking
them that way.

All of these numbers are from surveys and other types of spam numbers

Is there a way to block these numbers without adding them to my contact

RE: convert youtube to music files

2017-01-19 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Sandy,

It converted my 1 hour and 43 minute movie in seconds and as Alan said, there
was a message that it was done, but I could not find the Download button until
I looked with the Jaws cursor. I was using Internet Explorer and with the Jaws
cursor I was able to click on it, the standard "Open" or "Save" thing popped up
and I clicked save, then the 51 Mb file took maybe 6 or 8 seconds to download
and it then was in my Downloads folder. When I pressed enter on it iTunes
opened up and it started playing.

Sandy,

After you've pasted in the url of the YouTube video from which you want to
extract the audio, you execute a convert to mp3 button and wait a few seconds.
You should receive a message that converting your YouTube video to mp3 worked
and there will be a download button near the top of the screen that you execute
to start the download. It is right above a convert another video button.

Re: convert youtube to music files

2017-01-19 Thread Alan Lemly

There is also an app called chime which does the same thing. It just announces

half hour also.

Hi,

I have used this for TV programmes, such as Blackaddar! And it worked well!
But, for longer programmes, such as Montalbano, at least an hour long, it gets

They say it is good for listening to off line, however, I can't find how to
save or store the files, does anyone know?

Hi Alan,

This YTMP3.com website does seem to work well, I tried it with an old german
movie I found on Youtube, it is 1 hour and 43 minutes and it got converted in
seconds. When I clicked the Download button which I seem to find only with the
Jaws cursor it downloaded, the file was about 51 Mb and it plays in iTunes and
does show the length correctly as 1 hour and 43 minutes.

Best regards,
Sieghard

to Sieghard, thanks

2017-01-19 Thread regina alvarado
I realize I shouldn't send thank-you messages. However, thank you Sieghard for
letting me know about what might be stopping my fingerprint from working. I
have some split fingertips. Working on taking care of it: I tried a finger that
was not split, and it if continuing to work. I knew cold and wet could affect
it. However, didn't think about healing fingertips. Makes sense to me, though.

RE: Bluetooth Headphone Recommendation

2017-01-19 Thread Rizzino, Bonnie
My husband has had a great deal of success when working with clients who have
hearing aids with the Aftershokz bone conduction headphones.

Hi Eric,

I have hearing aids that rest on top of my ears, between the ear and skull.
Would these headphones work with them in, do you think? Also, do they let you
rewind and fast forward the iPhone?

Thanks,
Anna
