Getting iPhone battery replaced

2018-02-12 Thread Kathy Blackburn
I am running an iPhone 6 Plus and the most recent version of IOS. Just before
the last update, I began to get concerned about my phone's battery. The phone
began to feel less responsive, and I did have one occurrence of unexpected
shutdown. Using a ride-hailing app and Apple Maps for a half-hour trip can take
the battery from 100 percent to 72 percent or less. I close both apps when the
trip is complete. When I'm at church, I turn the phone off completely, only to
find when I power up the phone a couple of hours later that the battery has
lost substantially more charge. I have made an appointment with the Apple store
to get a replacement battery, but they couldn't give me a date until late March
or April.
I hope I can keep the phone working until then. It may mean I don't use SEEING
AI as much as I would like, and I may have to do my reading with another
device. I have already turned off push notifications from several apps.
Are others encountering this long wait time?

A promising work in progress: initial thoughts on HomePod

2018-02-12 Thread Maria Reyes
Here’s an interesting review on HomePod. Don’t know if they wrote for Apple but
it’s still interesting. Oh yeah and just to clarify something, you can actually
ask Siri to turn up the volume by a specific percentage according to Brent’s
audio demo Nimer sent earlier.

A Promising Work in Progress: Initial Thoughts on HomePod

By Ryan Christoffel
Feb 12, 2018 — 13:38 EST

At the start, you should know two things about me: HomePod is the first smart
speaker I've ever owned, and I'm all-in on the Apple ecosystem.

These facts make me the HomePod's perfect customer, and they will surely color
my comments. I'm guessing if I had more experience with other smart speakers,
or I didn't own nearly every modern Apple product, my thoughts on HomePod would
be different. That said, here are my early impressions.

Out of the box, my first thought was that HomePod is the perfect size – not in
any way close to being too big, but also not abnormally small. It's deceptively
heavy though. For now I have both white and space grey models, and they each
look truly fantastic – simple, modern, unassuming, and attractive. And I know
it's silly, but that power cord is nice.

Setup of HomePod is a triumph. Apple's new product setup flow for devices like
iPhone used to be long and cumbersome, and that's started to change of late.
HomePod nails it from the start. Hold your iOS device next to the HomePod, tap
through a few simple setup screens, and you're done. The best part comes near
the end, when Siri on the HomePod instructs you by voice in perfect sync with
the instructions being displayed on your device. I could trust a HomePod to any
tech-illiterate iPhone owner I know and feel confident they'd have no problems
with setup. No, it isn't AirPods level one-tap simple, but it's about as good
as I could imagine.

The main purpose of HomePod is playing music, and it does that very well. It's
probably not fair to write a HomePod thought piece with only a single paragraph
covering its music capabilities, but there are plenty of people better
qualified than me to review HomePod's sound quality – I'm impressed though.
Bass is powerful for such a small speaker, and I especially love being able to
hear each distinct instrument in a song well. On Saturday my wife and I just
sat together a little while doing nothing but enjoying music – we never do
that. It wasn't just background noise; the music was our main focus. If you
want to know how HomePod sounds, the answer is that it sounds great.

Other writers seem to universally agree that HomePod's design, setup, and sound
quality are all stellar. There's not much more worth saying on those matters,
so I want to focus in these first thoughts on Siri, third-party apps, and some
miscellaneous items.

Siri

Where Siri on HomePod is an unequivocal success is in hearing its trigger
phrase. The HomePod's array of microphones does an excellent job of picking up
"Hey Siri" from any reasonable distance at normal speaking volume. I can speak
fairly softly in everyday chatter, so when I heard HomePod reviewers say that
using your normal speaking voice worked fine, I read that with an asterisk,
wondering if it would apply to me. Well, it does – I don't have to remember I'm
speaking to a device, I simply have to speak.

Apple has designed HomePod to detect user commands no matter how much blaring
music's being pumped out of it. Some of the most delightful HomePod moments
I've had were when the volume was turned way up on a song or podcast, and I
casually, without raising my voice at all, gave a command that Siri heard
perfectly. Siri's success in these times isn't the exception, it's the rule.

After playing with HomePod much of the day Friday, by Saturday morning my brain
had already re-wired to expect that speaking at normal levels, even while the
HomePod was blasting music, was perfectly fine. And this didn't just apply to
HomePod – Saturday I was giving HomePod commands in the midst of playing music
around 60% volume, and I began having a conversation with my wife who was one
room over. Funnily enough, I started that conversation speaking at a normal
volume level, expecting my wife would be able to hear me. Of course, she
couldn't. Siri has humans beat in that department.

Hearing your request is one thing, but answering it properly is another. In
that area, Siri performs about the same as it does everywhere else. No, it
can't do everything that it does on other platforms, but for the things it can
do, it does them well the vast majority of the time – there are certainly
hiccups though. For example, on Friday I was listening to music, then asked
HomePod to play the Accidental Tech Podcast. It responded, "Okay, Accidental
Tech Podcast coming up." It heard me well, understood exactly what I wanted,
and responded in kind. Except, my music kept playing afterward. I asked Siri
again, using the same phrasing, and it gave a similar response then started

Poll about your volume settings

2018-02-12 Thread Gordon
So I spoke with a buddy of mine named Allen who got the iPhone 8 this
past Friday. We got into talking about volume settings and he told me
that his VO volume in the rotor is set to 80 and his ring sound volume
is set to 33. And he has the box unchecked to select ringer volume with
buttons. He says that with these volume settings that he can hear his
notifications really well with the volume buttons on the side turned
down where the speech is low enough for him to hear but not those around
him. If I did this same adjustment with my iPhone 7 and you could
faintly hear notifications sounds when they came in since notifications
are tied to the media volume while Voice over is turned on. So I'm
wondering if  those of you with the 8 can hear your notification sounds
with this volume setup that he has? I have my VO volume set at 5 and
ringer volume set at 23 which has nothing to do with notification
sounds. However mine are still really low when they come in since I keep
my media volume down lower to keep VO from being heard by those around
me. I don't keep the media volume down so low that I have to strain to
hear it, but at a comfortable level where I can hear it when I'm using
the phone. So I'm trying to find out if the 8 works differently than the
7 and how Allen is able to keep VO volume at 80 and keep the entire
neighborhood from hearing his speech?

Re: Walmart Grocery App

2018-02-12 Thread Sandra E. Finley
Well, believe it or not, last night I found an update to the Walmart Grocery
app and, bingo!! Now I can read what I could not just hours earlier.

Terry, if your iOS is updated, once signed in to the app, go to the bottom of
the screen, where there are five tabs. The left most one is “Home.” Double tap
that. In the next screen, the top line says, “Find items by scanning product
bar codes.”
Across from that is “home”
And on the right, “Shopping cart.”
I double tapped there and then I could read my order.

Hanging With Friends Will Be Shutting Down

2018-02-12 Thread MamaPeach
Not sure how many of you play the IOS/Android/Facebook game Hanging With
Friends, but Zynga has announced that as of March 26, 2018, the game will be
discontinued. I found this out by going to my profile in the Hanging With
Friends app on my IOS device, and then double tapping on Help, it is listed
under the Announcements heading. I have played this game for many many years
and am very unhappy that it will no longer be available. I guess it is like
everything else though, things come and things go.

Now that the app is apparently working, I am curious about the mini. What I
actually want to use it for is not a grilling thing at all. I would like to be
able to keep track of the temperature of meat cooking in the slow cooker or in
a slow oven. Not necessarily a lot of room in there in my slow cooker for a
chicken and a pro, but I haven’t seen the probe. Has anybody used this device
in that context with something in a slow cooker?

Hi,

I also use the Mini. I think it is the igrill 9000 or something like that.

The only problem is the little sleeve they put on the probe to hold it I’m
guessing gets really hot. I’m looking for a heat resistant tape or something
to replace it with.

I’m not Steve, but it depends on how many things you want to keep track of at
the same time.

I only need to track one item, so I bought the iGrill Mini for about $40.00.

They make them with multiple probes if you want to track more items.

Amazon seems like a good place to check.

RE: iPhone X a disappointment? Here's what real people think, CNET

2018-02-12 Thread joedinero68
Interesting article and I agree with a lot of things in it. I started with a 4s
and every 2 years have done an upgrade andthis year I gave it a pass because
the bells and whistles were a little light in volume and I didn’t hear them
LOL…the iPhone X was just not happening $1000 for phone…don’t think so almost
got tempted at Black Friday but stayed strong this year I will probably make an
upgrade but right now nothing is exciting in new developments. Obviously this
is my personal opinion .

iPhone X a disappointment? Here's what real people think

Commentary: Some experts believe iPhone hasn't captured people's

imagination. So I went to the Gulf Coast of Florida to find out.

By Chris Matyszczyk, February 11, 2018 1:00 PM PST

Not the smartphone of everyone's future?

What are people supposed to think?

On Apple's recent earnings call, CEO Tim Cook reported slightly reduced

iPhone sales numbers, but he insisted the iPhone X was outselling all other

iPhones.

He omitted, though, to offer any actual number for X sales. Some experts

fear the phone simply doesn't inspire.

I thought it wise, then, to go and talk to real people.

When the iPhone X was first announced, I wandered through Northern and

Southern California and pestered restaurant servers, bartenders, store

clerks, well, anyone in retail who was prepared to make eye contact. I asked

what they thought of the upcoming smartphone of the future.

They seemed a touch underwhelmed at the time.

This time, I went to the Gulf Coast of Florida, around Fort Myers, and spent

three days performing the very same acts of pestering the very same sorts of

people.

Now that the iPhone X is a living, breathing animal in the community, do

people covet it? Is there something stopping them from buying it?

It's a nice phone -- just that -- a nice phone

My first illumination came from a server in a really quite fancy restaurant.

He had a first generation Pixel and adored it with a passion that appeared

almost unnatural.

Soon, though, I understood why.

"I build my own computers," he said. "I've done it since I was a kid. My

latest is water-cooled."

Ah, cool. So what about iPhone X?

"I had the first iPhone, but then I went Android," he said.

"Why would you do that?"

"Because it syncs with Windows."

I'm not sure I've ever heard any human being utter those words. It made me

instinctively reach for my very pleasant Lebanese red wine and take an

unseemly gulp.

"Yes, but what about iPhone X?" I asked

"Don't get me wrong, it's a nice-looking phone. But there's nothing amazing

about it. Most of my friends have iPhones. They're for simple people."

At another restaurant, an 18-year-old bartender told me she had an iPhone 7.

"Would you want an X?"

"My stepsister has one," she said.

"Your stepsister? How old's she?"

"Thirteen."

"A thirteen-year-old has an iPhone X?"

"Yeah, her mom bought it."

"And is it great?"

"It's OK. I think Androids are better, but I'm sucked into my Apple laptop

and my iTunes and everything works together."

"But would you buy an iPhone X?" I persisted.

"I'm not spending $1,000 on a phone," she said.

It could be, indeed, that the price really does have a psychological effect

You are correct that there is much more online, however it surprises me that
you can't read what is in your cart in the grocery app. I can read exactly what
is in my cart, as well as the price.

New list, now with correct address

2018-02-12 Thread christopher hallsworth
Good morning to the list.
I am ashamed at this, but I have given you all the incorrect address to
subscribe to my new list dedicated to the Homepod. No wonder we've not have
many members. Lol! Sorry about that. Now here is the correct address, and I
have double checked with this the group's home page, reading character by
character with VoiceOver on my iPhone 6s. It is
homepodding+subscr...@groups.io
Thank you very much, I look forward to seeing you there.

 It really is quite pretty.
 Andrew Hoyle/CNET
It was such a sunny day in Northern California on Friday.
Little did I know that it would be clouded by portents of doom.
After all, I was wandering along to my local Apple store in Marin
County to pick up an Apple HomePod on launch day.
I'd never bought a first-generation Apple product before, preferring
the company to iron out kinks before I give it my louchely earned lucre.
For utterly irrational reasons, I felt good about the HomePod.
Yes, it's expensive. But I couldn't bear the idea of a Google Home or
Amazon Echo -- aka the salt cellar and the garbage can -- in the
house. Aesthetics, you understand. (I can feel you pitying me.) I
presented the QR code kindly texted me by Apple that morning and the
store employee, a rather positive sort, insisted I'd be so very, very
excited about getting my new toy.
"We've been playing with it here all morning and the sound fills the
whole store. It's incredible," he said.
"Incredible sounds good," I thought to myself. "But is that better
than, say, magical and revolutionary?" It's hard to tell with Apple's
 constant embrace of superlatives.
We chatted pleasantly for a little while, as we waited for the HomePod
 to emerge from the back.
But when it did arrive, the atmosphere changed.
"Now I have to warn you," the store employee began. Oh.
"The cable is permanently attached to the HomePod. If you rip it,
it'll cost you almost as much as the HomePod itself to repair," he
said. (Naturally, someone has already tried to rip it off.) I didn't
have time to react, as he continued: "A pet or a vacuum cleaner
catches it, and it'll be really expensive."
I insisted I had neither of these things.
He barely listened and added: "Unless you've got AppleCare."
 Aha.
The math is painful. The HomePod costs $350. Repairing it costs $279,
as revealed by Apple support -- and my Apple store salesman -- on Friday.
As for AppleCare+ for HomePod, which extends your coverage to two
 years, that's $39.
The Apple store employee admitted that he was duty-bound to lay out
his fears for my gadget-caring inadequacies.
It is, though, rare for a product to cost almost as much to repair as
to buy. Repair costs for Apple products are going up, though. The cost
of repairing an iPhone X screen? Why, $279.
In the case of the HomePod, unless you have AppleCare+, why wouldn't
you just buy a new one, rather than wait an unspecified period for
 your own to be repaired?
Apple didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. It's
likely, however, that the high cost of repair is linked to the fact
that the product is one whole piece, with seemingly no place of entry to
 outsiders at all.
