Hello Malcolm,

Your Apple Watch should connect to any network that your phone has previously
connected to.

An issue with Huboodle.

2018-02-20 Thread Liz Ulrich and LD Hope

Hello! I have been having an issue with the trivia trail game on Huboodle. I
can play levels 1 through 90, but when I finish level 90, 91 will not enable.
Has any one else experienced this problem, and if so, is there a way to enable
level 91. I played level 90 again hoping that would help but no such luck.

Apple TV

2018-02-20 Thread Jeremy Gilley
Good afternoon folks...

Was wondering if those of you who use apple television how do you like it?

I am thinking of dumping cable television.

The only reason I have cable is to watch sports and some news.

When football season is over, I actually watch like less then 3 hours of
television during the week, and paying the prices I'm spending for cable is
just gross.

So, I would like to save a couple hundred bucks and drop cable and go for
Apple TV.

So, my question is thus...

1. Can I watch all NFL and college football on it?

2. What news programs can I get on it? like fox news?

3. Does apple TV tell you what's playing and does it come with described
channels or movies?

I currently use Sero as my primary app for described movies and television
programs, but wouldn't mind see them play on the television.

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Just a spare thought, would the echo assist with the apple television as
well?

Thanks in advance.

RE: Mark on Echo

2018-02-20 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Kelly,

I completely understand your concern.

Take it from me, using these devices is nothing like learning to use a screen
reader. Trust me.

On the one hand, there isn't much HomePod can do, as yet, and on the other?
Alexa recognizes normal speech patterns.

Having said this, I have decided that two Smart home systems is enough for me,
at present. Translation? I'm not purchasing any Google Home speakers, anytime
soon. (smile).

Mark,

Do you feel your headspace is crowded keeping track of two voice
interfaces: one for the Home Pod and one for the Echo? I am concerned that I
would end up being an intermediate user of both rather than an advanced,
sophisticated user of one device.

Hi Mark,

What is your reason for the Echo Plus? It is the same as the Echo but with
built-in smart hub which is supposed to help connect to various smart home
devices (if you have them).
We also bought one but when I bought it during the introductory offer here in
Canada it came with a Philipps Hue bulb so that was a bit of an incentive. So
far I still have to figure out if that smart home hub is actually doing
anything, I don't think it does in our case since we also have the 4th gen
Apple TV which acts as a hub for our smart home devices.

Hello Everyone,

Well, today I went over to Best Buy and purchased an Amazon Echo Plus. Of
course, I got the black-on-black-on-black, model. (smile).

I must say that this device is a blast.

The iOS Alexa app was a breeze to configure and I was up and running in a
matter of minutes.

Thanks to all of you who replied to my free music iOS app question.

>From the App Store, I downloaded and created both a free Pandora and iHeart

>that I can create custom radio stations with my voice, only, via my Echo as
>the iOS app is not needed.

As I stated in my previous post, I have decided to use HomePod for personal
contacts, tasks, reminders, etc. but, at this time, I'll be using Alexa for fun
and random music playback, while using HomePod to play my own personal music
collection.

Would you believe it? After demonstrating my new Echo Plus to some friends who
had never seen Alexa in action, we went to Best Buy and each of them purchased
an Echo Dot. I setup three Dots, today. So that's 4 Echoes I worked with in
one day. (big Smile). I'm definitely on my way to becoming an Echo guru!!!
(Big Smile).

How wonderful it is that we have such a marvelously accessible platform such
as iOS from which to explore so many new and wonderful devices. Long live
Apple Inc and its incredible developers. Also, kudos to the Amazon Alexa
development team, as well.

Mark

Re: iPhone As a Braille Note Taker

2018-02-20 Thread Richard Turner

While a braille display works well with the iPhone, it is not as simple to do
word processing, though with the AccessNote app from APH, it can do very well.
I've heard that lots of people are finding problems with the Orbit 20, as in
dots not coming up, etc.
So make sure if one buys one, they use it a lot while there is still a money
back guarantee available.
I'm curious to about the "BrailleMe" and for another couple thousand, the "B2G"
from National Braille Press, which would be a note taker, not just a display.

You can control your iPhone completely with a braille display. Yes the iPhone
can be used in conjunction with a braille display to give you braille notetaker
functionality. What I would suggest is looking into the Orbit reader 20 which
was just released this month. It is a low cost 20 cell display. It is $449.00
which is about a third of the price of a similar size display.

I have a friend who would like to purchase a Focus 40 Braille note taker but
the cost is ridiculously prohibitive. I’m posting to this list to ask if
anyone can offer a configuration where the iPhone - using a Braille display —
might not offer the same functionality?

Specifically, are there apps that can read the contents of a note or some other
iOS document and present it converted into Braille via a display.

I must admit, I am Braille illiterate as I lost my sight at age 41 and haven’t
been able to acclimate to Braille. I suspect that my fingertips were burned
badly enough handling heated engine components when I could see that I haven’t
the sensibility in my fingers. So, when it comes to Braille I’m indeed quite

Subject: iPhone As a Braille Note Taker

I have a friend who would like to purchase a Focus 40 Braille note taker but
the cost is ridiculously prohibitive. I’m posting to this list to ask if
anyone can offer a configuration where the iPhone - using a Braille
display — might not offer the same functionality?

Specifically, are there apps that can read the contents of a note or some
other iOS document and present it converted into Braille via a display.

I must admit, I am Braille illiterate as I lost my sight at age 41 and haven’t
been able to acclimate to Braille. I suspect that my fingertips were burned
badly enough handling heated engine components when I could see that I haven’t
the sensibility in my fingers. So, when it comes to Braille I’m indeed
quite ignorant!

Re: Mark on Echo

2018-02-20 Thread Kimber Gardner
Well, before I got the Echo I was just using the calendar local to my
iPhone. But when I started playing with Alexa I found that iCloud
calendar worked well since I could have my events proliferated across
my devices. So not only do my events show on my iPhone and my Echo,
but I also see them on my iPad which I never could before.

There are other choices for calendar linking in the Alexa app. iCloud
is just the one that seems to work the best for me.

RE: The complete list of Amazon Alexa Commands, So Far, CNET

2018-02-20 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
One thing I'd like to add here is that some of these abilities and commands are
only available in the US, for example, in Canada you can't switch
accounts/profiles nor can you play Audible books. The latter I really hope will
be something they add soon, it was one of the reasons why I bought Echos and it
was very disappointing when I asked Alexa to play an Audible book and it told
me that this was not yet supported..

Subject: The complete list of Amazon Alexa Commands, So Far, CNET

Hello Everyone,

As this is not an Amazon Echo support community, I have no intention of
flooding the list with Amazon Echo articles.

However, given that the Amazon Echo products can and do greatly enhance the
lives of so many, including those of us who are blind or low vision, and given
that all of the features mentioned in the following article are completely
VoiceOver accessible from within the iOS app, I have decided to post it here.

If you find that you would like to see any or all of the features listed in
this article made available to Siri/HomePod, consider sending a
suggestion/request to Apple.

Please keep in mind that the following list of commands is in no way
comprehensive. For example, the article does not mention the native onboard
audio equalizer that is now available. As a result, I can simply instruct
Alexa to increase or decrease the bass or treble levels on my Echo Plus.
Another example is that the article does not mention that one can use Alexa to
create new custom Pandora radio stations. In effect, one can use Alexa to
completely control both Pandora and iHeart Radio without the need to ever open
the iOS apps. All one need do is to simply link their respective accounts to
Amazon Alexa.

While the Echo Plus sells for around $150 in a retail store, it can be found
for as low as $100, online. The Echo Dot, at Best Buy, yesterday was selling
for approximately $35.

Enjoy and I hope you find the information useful.

Mark

The complete list of Alexa commands so far Here are all the things you can ask
Alexa to do. (Dad jokes included.) By Taylor Martin, December 18, 2017 3:20 PM
PST

Amazon's (L to R) Tap, Echo and Echo Dot speakers do so much with the Alexa
assistant.
Amazon's voice assistant, Alexa, is infiltrating your home, your beach trips
and even your ride to work. Now that there are many ways to interact with Alexa
-- with the Tap, Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Look, Echo Show, Dash Wand and the Amazon
Fire TV -- you might find yourself talking to her more often.

The list of commands is expanding rapidly, as is the number of third-party
services and devices that Alexa officially (and unofficially) supports.
Here is the (almost) complete list of Amazon Alexa commands.

Summoning Alexa
By default, Amazon's connected speakers have the same wake word. All you have
to do to queue up a request is say, "Alexa." In the Amazon Alexa mobile
application or at echo.amazon.com, you can change the wake word to either
Amazon, Echo or Computer.

If you have an Amazon Tap, Dash Wand or the Amazon Fire TV voice remote, you'll
need to press a button to wake Alexa.

Amazon updated the Tap with a hands-free mode that you must enable in the
settings. The only wake word available to the Amazon Tap is Alexa.

Editors' note: Originally published on April 13, 2016, this article is
regularly updated to include new Alexa commands, features and information.
The complete list of Alexa commands

The list of Alexa commands is expansive and grows with every new service or
device it supports. Alexa isn't perfect, but it's pretty great at understanding
natural language, so you don't always have to speak the commands exactly as you
see them below. Many commands work when worded several different ways or even
with words omitted.

When you consider the possible third-party commands through Skills, essentially
the apps of Amazon's Alexa, the list goes on even further. To learn what
individual skills are capable of, visit the skill's page from the Amazon Alexa
app or alexa.amazon.com.
Here are all the native Alexa commands.
Basic commands
• Ask for help: "Alexa, help."
• Have a conversation: "Alexa, let's chat."
• Mute or unmute: "Alexa, mute" or, "Alexa, unmute."
• Stop or pause: "Alexa, stop" or, "Alexa, shut up."
• Change volume: "Alexa, set the volume to 5," "Alexa, louder" or
"Alexa, turn up/down the volume."

Show
The newest addition to Amazon's Alexa lineup is the Echo Show, the only one
with a touchscreen display. This means you can tell it to show you things.
• Ask for what the Echo Show can display: "Alexa, what can you show
me?"
• Show your calendar: "Alexa, show my calendar."
• Show pictures: "Alexa, show my photos" or, "Alexa, show me pictures
of cats."

I used Apple Music within the first six months after its release. It had very
little classic jazz recordings, except for the big names.
There was virtually nothing from contemporary independent artists. I was better
off ripping CD’s and loading them onto my iPhone and using services like
Spotify and Pandora.

RE: Mark on Echo

2018-02-20 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
My issue with Alexa is that I find that unless you use a skill all the time I
may simply forget what I have to say to get a particular skill to reply. Yes,
Alexa can answer quite a few things natively, but so far I have found all these
skills not super useful.
We mostly use Alexa to turn our Philipps Hue lights on or off, so far the
integration with our Honeywell Lyric Thermostat is not working even though it
says the skill is set up and we do use it for timers in the kitchen and
occasionally as an intercom. I have a fibre internet connection with 125 Mb
download and 10 Mb upload but find that making phone calls is often not a great
experience, we can hear the other party just fine bu tthey often say there is a
big Echo (maybe that is where the name comes from)and the audio on their end is
choppy.

The complete list of Amazon Alexa Commands, So Far, CNET

2018-02-20 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

As this is not an Amazon Echo support community, I have no intention of
flooding the list with Amazon Echo articles.

However, given that the Amazon Echo products can and do greatly enhance the
lives of so many, including those of us who are blind or low vision, and
given that all of the features mentioned in the following article are
completely VoiceOver accessible from within the iOS app, I have decided to
post it here.

Another example is that the article does not mention that one can use Alexa
to create new custom Pandora radio stations. In effect, one can use Alexa
to completely control both Pandora and iHeart Radio without the need to ever
open the iOS apps. All one need do is to simply link their respective
accounts to Amazon Alexa.

While the Echo Plus sells for around $150 in a retail store, it can be found
for as low as $100, online. The Echo Dot, at Best Buy, yesterday was
selling for approximately $35.

Enjoy and I hope you find the information useful.

Mark

The complete list of Alexa commands so far
Here are all the things you can ask Alexa to do. (Dad jokes included.)
By Taylor Martin, December 18, 2017 3:20 PM PST

Amazon's (L to R) Tap, Echo and Echo Dot speakers do so much with the Alexa
assistant.
Amazon's voice assistant, Alexa, is infiltrating your home, your beach trips
and even your ride to work. Now that there are many ways to interact with
Alexa -- with the Tap, Echo, Echo Dot, Echo Look, Echo Show, Dash Wand and
the Amazon Fire TV -- you might find yourself talking to her more often.

The list of commands is expanding rapidly, as is the number of third-party
services and devices that Alexa officially (and unofficially) supports.
Here is the (almost) complete list of Amazon Alexa commands.

Summoning Alexa
By default, Amazon's connected speakers have the same wake word. All you
have to do to queue up a request is say, "Alexa." In the Amazon Alexa mobile
application or at echo.amazon.com, you can change the wake word to either
Amazon, Echo or Computer.

If you have an Amazon Tap, Dash Wand or the Amazon Fire TV voice remote,
you'll need to press a button to wake Alexa.

Alexa isn't perfect, but it's pretty great at
understanding natural language, so you don't always have to speak the
commands exactly as you see them below. Many commands work when worded
several different ways or even with words omitted.

When you consider the possible third-party commands through Skills,
essentially the apps of Amazon's Alexa, the list goes on even further. To
learn what individual skills are capable of, visit the skill's page from the
Amazon Alexa app or alexa.amazon.com.

• Show pictures: "Alexa, show my photos" or, "Alexa, show me pictures
of cats."
• View your cameras or other rooms: "Alexa, show the living room
camera."
• View movie trailers: "Alexa, show me the trailer for 'It.'"
• Movie showtimes: "Alexa, show me movie showtimes."
• View the forecast: "Alexa, show me the weekend forecast."
• Play YouTube videos: "Alexa, show me travel videos on YouTube."
• Display recipes: "Alexa, show me a slow cooker recipe from
Allrecipes."
• View your Flash Briefing: "Alexa, play my video Flash Briefing."
• See your timers: "Alexa, show me my timers."
• Open a visual skill: "Alexa, open Uber."

Yes, everyone will transfer your number. It will be necessary to
obtain your account number and the four digit password assigned to
your account. Everyone will give it up, although you may have to call
and then wait on hold for 20 minutes. Check with Aira about
prioritization, but I believe it is a function of the Aira app and it
has nothing to do with your choice of carrier. Aira has been developed
to function optimally regardless of the carrier used, which is why it
is such a great experience. Someone is not tied to a cell phone
provider that does not suit their needs. I am remembering this from my
conversations last fall with Michael Hingson and AT corporate
representatives at the opening of the new AT experience store in the
Chicago Loop.

I used Apple Music within the first six months after its release. It
had very little classic jazz recordings, except for the big names.
There was virtually nothing from contemporary independent artists. I
was better off ripping CD’s and loading them onto my iPhone and using
services like Spotify and Pandora.

Re: Mark on Echo

2018-02-20 Thread Kelly Pierce
Mark,

Do you feel your headspace is crowded keeping track of two voice
interfaces: one for the Home Pod and one for the Echo? I am concerned
that I would end up being an intermediate user of both rather than an
advanced, sophisticated user of one device.

I have to say I bought my first Echo around Xmas when they were deeply
discounted. Since then I have purchased three more and now have them
all over my house. At first I found the iOS Alexa app a little spotty
in its performance. Sometimes I would tap and nothing would happen.
Things have gotten some better with the last update.

Like Mark I mostly use Alexa for music playback though I have to say
it was a breeze to integrate my calendar and contacts from my iPhone.
Now I can tell Alexa to add events to my calendar and see them on my
iPhone. Likewise, I can add items to various lists and see them on my
phone.

I also use Alexa to control lights and the thermostat in my house.

Echo? Yes, totally worth it.

Aira uses AT, regardless of who your cell phone provider is. For
example, someone could use the Verizon network as their carrier but
Aira would use AT for the data connection. It is possible then in
some areas to have no service with your carrier but still be able to
use Aira. An example of this is Quincy, Illinois, which is along the
Mississippi River. Verizon offers no service in Quincy but it is well
covered by AT

It is super simple to switch services. Just get the SIM card of the
other MVNO and port in your number and see how things go. Give it a
try and you could always switch back to your other service. After
switching from T-Mobile to a T-Mobile MVNO, I have never looked back.
Now I am with a Verizon MVNO and love the experience and price even
more. T-Mobile has a dead zone in downtown Chicago that Verizon does
not have for example and I said goodbye to dropped calls around a
certain L station that I experienced on the T-Mobile network. It is
not a marriage. You can drop your new MVNO at any time, even if it is
just hours or days, and go to someone else.

I felt the same as you do which is why I got the first one when it was

 Hello Everyone,

Well, today I went over to Best Buy and purchased an Amazon Echo Plus.
 Of
course, I got the black-on-black-on-black, model. (smile).

I must say that this device is a blast.

The iOS Alexa app was a breeze to configure and I was up and running in
 a
 matter of minutes.

Thanks to all of you who replied to my free music iOS app question.

From the App Store, I downloaded and created both a free Pandora and
iHeart Radio account. From within the iOS Alexa app, I linked these
 two
accounts to my Echo and wow! They work marvelously well. I have
 exactly
what I want with amazing voice control over both. Alexa is truly
incredible. I love the fact that I can create custom radio stations
 with
my voice, only, via my Echo as the iOS app is not needed.

As I stated in my previous post, I have decided to use HomePod for
personal contacts, tasks, reminders, etc. but, at this time, I'll be
 using
Alexa for fun and random music playback, while using HomePod to play my
 own personal music collection.

Would you believe it? After demonstrating my new Echo Plus to some
friends who had never seen Alexa in action, we went to Best Buy and
 each
of them purchased an Echo Dot. I setup three Dots, today. So that's 4
Echoes I worked with in one day. (big Smile). I'm definitely on my
 way
to becoming an Echo guru!!! (Big Smile).

How wonderful it is that we have such a marvelously accessible
 platform
such as iOS from which to explore so many new and wonderful devices.
 Long
live Apple Inc and its incredible developers. Also, kudos to the
 Amazon
 Alexa development team, as well.

 Mark

Hello Sarai,
I would personally recommend viewing YouTube videos by a person named
Stetson Doggett. In his videos, he discusses the best cell phone plans
and even discusses some MVNOS and their particular features as they
relate to what will and won't work on the iPhone. I believe that he
mentioned that he personally uses the Cricket wireless network which
runs off AT and that he does not have any issues with throdling.

Re: iPhones and VMNO providers

2018-02-20 Thread Shai
Hello Sarai,
I would personally recommend viewing YouTube videos by a person named
Stetson Doggett. In his videos, he discusses the best cell phone plans
and even discusses some MVNOS and their particular features as they
relate to what will and won't work on the iPhone. I believe that he
mentioned that he personally uses the Cricket wireless network which
runs off AT and that he does not have any issues with throdling.

Re: Mark on Echo

2018-02-20 Thread Patti Johnson
I reckon I'm the last one on my block, as it were, to get an Echo.
I don't have one. I fear I wouldnt' use it much.
I have alexa on my fire tv and don't even use that.
But I do have a question. If you get the Echo plus, do you have to
get the smart plug then?
If you don't then that could bring up some possible uses, though my
lamps are on an automatic timer and it's no big deal to adjust the
thermostat on my talking one.I have used Alexa on the fire tv to play
music with my Amazon prime subscription of unlimited music but still
it's not something I do very much.

So I don't know.

Re: Mark on Echo

2018-02-20 Thread Kimber Gardner

I agree. MVNOs can be a really good deal. My personal cell is with T-Mobile,
but my business iPhone is with Ting which runs off of both the Sprint and
T-Mobile networks and has a pay for what you use structure. I think I paid
something like $15 on my most recent Ting bill.
As with anything, shop around and look for the best deal which will best suit
your needs.

I have used MVNO's that run on T-Mobile and Verizon. I paid a lot less for my
service than if I had obtained it from the carrier. On Xfinity mobile, my
download speeds are 60 MBPS. I would hardly call this a throttle. It is just as
fast as my home Internet connection. While throttling did happen in the past,
it is less common now. It is true some advanced features are not available. For
example, WIFI calling is not provided by Xfinity Mobile but is offered to
Verizon customers.
This is not an issue for me though because I can call any number in the US and
Canada on WIFI from Google Hangouts. Also, Verizon customers can choose their
ring tone length but Xfinity Mobile customers have a fixed length of 30
seconds. These are small matters.
My cell phone bill was $12 last month, a fraction of the cost of Verizon.
