Re: need help

2018-03-16 Thread Arlene
Thank you, so much, Richard, for these instructions. we did get everything
straightened out last night with all the instructions we received and me
searching some instructions in applevis. voice over just wouldn't come on, on
my phone, so we did need our neighbor's help. Once it was on, I found that
somehow the airplane mode got turned on and the wifi was off, so i
straightened that out, got the airplane mode off and the wifi back on. I'm
sorry I'm writing so late, but after being out most of the day yesterday I was
really tired, and then today I wasn't feeling that well with a migraine so
that's why I haven't responded since last night. We appreciate all the
assistance that we received. We're very new to all of this, but little by
little we're coming along. Thanks again.

No, it is not Assistive touch, that is completely different.
Under Accessibility, you want to go down to Accessibility shortcut, open that
and select VoiceOver.
Then, a triple click of the home button will toggle VoiceOver on and off.

Like Marie said, get Siri to turn voiceover back on and then you should
be able to go to settings and find accessibility and set the home button triple

Today was great with getting things set up on our iphone se phones and
an ipad mini from t-mobile. One of the guys may have forgotten to put the

the 3 taps. Our neighbor is coming over to help us so if someone could tell me
what to tell him. He might be able to figure it out. Before I left it was still
talk, but I found that siri was on but not voice over. 7:t3 my time. Thanks if

Hi Listers.

I signed up yesterday for USPS informed delivery.
This is a service where in addition to tracking packages you also get a list
of the mail that will arrive in your mailbox every day.
I figured it would be a help to at least have an idea if I even care to scan
the mail in the box or just shred it grin!

Unfortunately using chrome and firefox on the pc and using the informed app on
the iPhone I have yet to find a way to read the scanned image.

I can't download the image on the pc or read it and I can't read it or share it
with another app on the iPhone.

Has anyone done this successfully?

IF so please share your wisdom.

Thanks in advance.

I appreciate those of you who pointed out the sorting by "latest" feature.
I'll definitely use that. I also like some of the other ideas shared, so think
I'll put together a suggestion list.

This feature kind of already exists. If you'll go to the bookshelf
tab, then choose latest, you'll be able to choose from the latest
books you've listened to.

In the March edition of APH newsletter the Orbit Reader 20 should be available
for purchase again sometime this summer. Unfortunately APH is the only place to

There is another low cost braille display that you can research for

  Hello folks,

I wonder if any of you have acquired and used the orbit braille reader or
braille me and used them with iOS devices.

I read the description of both on their respective websites, but very
interesting to hear the views of people who have actually have hand on

stock. I am not sure why so quickly! I also know that the major differences
are first the orbit uses the eight braille dots while the braille me uses the

while the orbit does not. In other descriptions they sound similar.

Any input on this topic will be extremely appreciated. I am not sure if I
should wait for the orbit to be back in stock, or go ahead and order the
braille me.

  Cheers,

Re: Braille display Comparison

2018-03-16 Thread Richard Turner

I used the Braille Edge for several years. The note taker is basic, and works
best if the default document type is txt rather than HIMS Braille or BRL.
It pairs easily with an iPhone.
After 3 or 4 years, I had to send it in for repairs, and found that the mother
board needed to be replaced, which would have cost about $2400, which is only
$400 or so less than a new one.
Fortunately, it was provided by my work, but I decided to wait to get a new one
until the less expensive displays become a reality.

the braille edge has a little bit. I’ve only seen it, never really used it. Did
not like the ergonomics.

I have not use a braille edge. I do have and have used obviously, the
brailliant. It connects well. And I prefer its ergonomics to the hymns devices.
That is a personal choice. Of course, it has no notetaking ability, and I think
the braille edge has a little bit. I’ve only seen it, never really used it. Did
not like the ergonomics.

But, I found it quite a challenge to connect the VU20 so, I returned it.

Re: Braille displays: braille me or orbit braille reader?

2018-03-16 Thread Richard Turner
They made the choice to skip the routing keys because of cost.
One of the APH staff hinted last year that they may be considering a 40 cell
display, but that could have been a vague reference to the Graphity display
that is 40 by 60, a multiline display that will show tactile graphics.
Maybe we will hear more after or during CSUN next week.

I have read this thread with interest because I want to buy another Braille
display; I bought a VarioUltra 20 and I regret that decision, partly because of
its difficulty connecting with iPhone and now the US office is gone. I am
reluctant to consider the BrailleMe because it is not based here and I don’t
want the same experience. Also, I really want more cells, 40 or 32. If an Orbit
20 cann be $500 or less, could a 40 be $900 or so? Does anyone know if Orbit is
considering that option?

Well they could have done so but it would’ve increased the cost what is a
critical feature to one person may not be important to somebody else they made
their decisions to hold down the cost and you can either buy them or not

RE: Braille displays: braille me or orbit braille reader?

2018-03-16 Thread M. Taylor
Hello,

What I find interesting is why neither of these two manufacturers chose not to
include both routing keys and 8-dot Braille cells in their products. For my
money, both of these two features are integral to a full functioning Braille
display.

Some things in life, truly confound me.

Certainly they must have done some surveys or see the need for both of these
key features.

Oh well, what is done, is done.

True, but it only lasts for a few seconds, and if you're worried about
Alexa listening to you you can just say stop at the end of your question
or just not enable this feature. How would you like to see this feature
work?

Amazon makes it easier to give Alexa follow-up commands

It's easy enough to summon Alexa on one of Amazon's speakers, but when
you've got a million things to ask the voice assistant, it can be a pain
having to say "Hey, Alexa" over and over again. Now, Amazon has rolled out a
new feature, which gives its Echo speakers the ability to listen to
back-to-back commands for the assistant. When you switch on Alexa's
Follow-up Mode, your Echo speaker will continue listening for a second
command for a few seconds after you issue the first one -- no need to wake
it up again by saying "Hey, Alexa." You'll know for sure if the device is
listening if its blue indicator is on.

Take note, though, that your speaker won't wait for a follow-up if it's in
the middle of playing music or audiobooks. Also, Alexa won't respond until
it's "confident you're speaking to" it. You'd have to talk clearly and
audibly, otherwise it won't be able to separate what you're saying from
background noise.

You can also ensure that Alexa won't think that you're issuing follow-up
commands when you're talking to someone else by ending the conversation:
simply say "stop," "thank you," "cancel" or "go to sleep."

If this sounds useful, because you pepper Alexa with questions and tasks,
just fire up the voice assistant's app and head to Settings. Select the
device you want, scroll down, toggle on the mode and you're good to go.

I read the description of both on their respective websites, but very
interesting to hear the views of people who have actually have hand on

stock. I am not sure why so quickly! I also know that the major differences
are first the orbit uses the eight braille dots while the braille me uses the

Any input on this topic will be extremely appreciated. I am not sure if I

You will get an email every day. There will be images in the email. Double tap
on one of them. You will get a choice as to whether to share just that one
image, or share all images. When you double tap on Cher, if you have it

Re: Braille displays: braille me or orbit braille reader?

2018-03-16 Thread kitty hevener
Chris, I have used braille displays for years and am trying to remember when I
last used dots 7 and 8. I will tell u that those dots are used to show the
cursor. I have also seen times when the full cell is used to show the cursor.
I think the main issue is not in locating the cursor, but routing it quickly to
the area you want to edit. I personally use cursor routing buttons so much
that if I did not have them, I would go nuts!!! It’s just so efficient to hit
the button right where your finger is and have the cursor come right there.

Off hand, with an 8 dot display, it is very easy to find the cursor. Also, I
believe that computer Braille utilyzes dots 7 and 8.

Hello folks,

I wonder if any of you have acquired and used the orbit braille reader or
braille me and used them with iOS devices.

I read the description of both on their respective websites, but very
interesting to hear the views of people who have actually have hand on
experience with these devices. I know that the orbit reader is already out of
stock. I am not sure why so quickly! I also know that the major differences
are first the orbit uses the eight braille dots while the braille me uses the
six dots. The second major difference is that Braille me has routing buttons
while the orbit does not. In other descriptions they sound similar.

Any input on this topic will be extremely appreciated. I am not sure if I
should wait for the orbit to be back in stock, or go ahead and order the
braille me.

Cheers,

Cris

Subject: RE: Help Needed with Screen Recording not Capturing Audio

Hi Godwin,

I finally grabbed my bluetooth speaker which also has a 3.5mm input jack so it
can be used as a bluetooth speaker or as a wired speaker. When I used it
wirelessly via bluetooth Voiceover switched to the phone’s earpiece as soon as
I turned on screen recording. However, when I used a 3.5mm male-to-male cable
to connect my iPhone’s headphone jack to the speaker’s input jack screen
recording worked fine, Voiceover continued to play through the external speaker
after I started screen recording.

I did try various other options such as turning off audio ducking, turning off
automatic switching to speaker for phone calls in Voiceover Settings > Audio
and also in Accessibility Settings > Audio Routing I switched the setting from
automatic to speaker, but none of these things helped. Each time when I tried
screen recording Voiceover switched to the earpiece and the only work-around
currently as far as I am concerned is to connect an external speaker using a
wired connection.

I should say also that I have an iPhone 6S Plus and I am using the iOS 11.3
public beta 5 so while many may still be on 11.2.6 it does not appear that this
bug is fixed in 11.3 at least not so far. My guess is there might be one more
beta 6 next Monday or Tuesday, March 19 or 20 and that the iOS 11.3 public
release will follow the week after, between Monday, March 26 and Wednesday,
March 28. Of course it is quite possible that public beta 5 was the last beta
and that iOS 11.3 will be released to the public next week.

I will again write to Apple Accessibility and tell them that in my opinion this
is a bug and hopefully others will do so as well.

Best regards,
Sieghard

It is a bug, screen recording used to capture audio just fine, but at this
point it does not work any more since Voiceover switches to the earpiece. If
you turn it up all the way you can just barely hear it on the recording.
You could try to plug in an external speaker, haven’t tried this, but it may
work.

Anna,

Thanks so much for the quick reply. The funny thing is that when I follow your
instructions and turn the microphone on,Voiceover goes quiet and I have to lock
my iPhone 7 running iOS 11.2.6 to get it back. I seem to recall reading about
an issue with the screen recorder and maybe I've just stepped into it. I really
want to be able to use this feature to record video with the Voiceover audio

Thanks again.

Hi alan,

It sounds like the mic was off during the recording. To turn it on, press hard
on the Screen Recording button if you have 3D Touch, or double-tap and hold it,
flick to Open Controls, and double-tap. You'll be able to turn the mic on on
the screen that opens. Once it's on, it should be on for all future recordings

Hello,
No not almost everyone had units with issues. There was actually only a few of
us that had issues. Most did not. There are units that are over a year old
running fine. I was one who had a defective unit and I have already received my
replacement unit and it is working fine. As for displays with speech, the only
ones I know of are ones like the polaris or b2g units. These range from close
to $3000 to $6000

Hello folks,
I wonder if any of you have acquired and used the orbit braille reader or
braille me and used them with iOS devices.
I read the description of both on their respective websites, but very
interesting to hear the views of people who have actually have hand on
experience with these devices. I know that the orbit reader is already out
of stock. I am not sure why so quickly! I also know that the major
differences are first the orbit uses the eight braille dots while the
braille me uses the six dots. The second major difference is that Braille
me has routing buttons while the orbit does not. In other descriptions
they sound similar.
Any input on this topic will be extremely appreciated. I am not sure if I
should wait for the orbit to be back in stock, or go ahead and order the
braille me.

Cheers,
Cris

You’ll be able to find out a lot about both ddisplays next week at csun. Blind

If you find the routing buttons helpful I would go ahead and order the Braille
Me. I don't know if they are similar in price. I just ordered the Orbit and
it meets my needs very well. There is a lot I have to learn about it but it
works very well with the iDevices.

Subject: Braille displays: braille me or orbit braille reader?

I am not sure if I
should wait for the orbit to be back in stock, or go ahead and order the
braille me.

Cheers,

Cris

You can also do a two-finger double-tap to have Assistant start listening. I
think you have to do that tap again to stop listening, though.

USPS informed delivery and the iPhone a question:

2018-03-16 Thread Don Breda

Hi Listers.

I signed up yesterday for USPS informed delivery.
This is a service where in addition to tracking packages you  also get a
list of the mail that will arrive in your mailbox every day.
I figured it would be a help to at least have an idea if I even care to
scan the mail in the box or just shred it grin!

Unfortunately using chrome and firefox on the pc and using the informed
app on the iPhone I have yet to find a way to read the scanned image.

I can't download the image on the pc or read it and I can't read it or
share it with another app on the iPhone.

Has anyone done this successfully?

IF so please share your wisdom.

Thanks in advance.

Don

Re: Best Password Manager

2018-03-16 Thread Wayne Merritt
1Password is good on the iPhone, and they do have a 1Password app for
the PC but I think there is a subscription cost involved if you use it
on multiple platforms. I have used the 1Password iOS app for several
years and have found it very useful and accessible. The free version
will let you track log-ins, secure notes, identities, and credit cars.
There is a $10 in-app purchase which lets you enter other categories,
like wireless router information, specific passwords, driver's
license/state ID information, and other things. Anytime I create or
update a password, I will go into 1Password and enter that
information.

RE: The IOS Tips App

2018-03-16 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
According to Ian the standard gesture to change pages, a 3-finger swipe from
the right side of the screen towards the left side, seems to work.
This is the same as the gesture you use to change from one Homepage to the next
and it is often used after an App is first installed and some informational
pages are displayed where you have to make it to the last one of those before
you can find an "OK, got it" or "Done" button.

Hello.
I have found the beginning of many great articles in the Tips app.
However, they always say, 1 of 5, or 1 of 10, but there seems to be no way to
advanced to the next page.
Double tap, double tap and hold, nothing works, and there seems to be no way to
adjust that slider.
Anyone notice this behavior in IOS 11.2.5?
Thanks a lot.

Hello.
I have found the beginning of many great articles in the Tips app.
However, they always say, 1 of 5, or 1 of 10, but there seems to be no way
to advanced to the next page.
Double tap, double tap and hold, nothing works, and there seems to be no way
to adjust that slider.

Anyone notice this behavior in IOS 11.2.5?
Thanks a lot.

I had an orbit for a bit, not impressed. almost everyone who got one in this
early run had dots that wouldn’t come up. I got a refund. I was hoping for a
cheap backup, but it’s not going to be orbit. I can see one or two with dots
not working, but almost *all* of them?!

Hi, I have the Orbit 20 display and love it. Keep in mind that this is the
first braille display that I have ever used. The only thing I would wish it
had more is, 40 cells. I have pared it with my Iphone 6s and makes it much
better to type information into a post on Facebook and to read books and take
notes. Andy and Shubert

one big difference between the two is that the Orbit has 8 dot Braille and the
Braille me only has 6 dots.

  Hi

In the March edition of APH newsletter the Orbit Reader 20 should be
available for purchase again sometime this summer. Unfortunately APH is the
only place to purchase the Orbit Reader 20.

There is another low cost braille display that you can research for
information; the Braille Me. I think the price for the Braille me is $450.

  Donna

It’s my understanding now that APH isn’t shipping orbits until the summer.

Hi Carla,

Where did you order your orbit reader? I have been checking the American
Printing House for the last three weeks, and I continuously find a message on
the website that says: currently out of stock. Is there any other distributer?

If you find the routing buttons helpful I would go ahead and order the
Braille Me. I don't know if they are similar in price. I just ordered the
Orbit and it meets my needs very well. There is a lot I have to learn about it
but it works very well with the iDevices.

I am not sure if I
should wait for the orbit to be back in stock, or go ahead and order the
braille me.

Cheers,

Cris
