Re: Fantastical

2019-04-30 Thread Richard Turner

Well, I have used Fantastical since its early days. The developer is very
responsive and took a partly accessible app and made it fully accessible over a
relatively short time.
It takes the information from the native calendar app and presents it in a much
more useful way in my opinion.
In the month view, the top have of the screen is like a wall calendar or think
of it like a braille calendar.
You have Sunday through Saturday across the screen and on the lower half of the
screen is your appointments for the day you select.
When you add a new event, you can write out the information in one line and it
will put the info into the correct fields.
For example" "Dr. Jones, 5/15/19, 1PM, 1 hour, at 155 Main street Los Angeles,
CA"
Note, I separated each item with a comma"
When you then double tapped on the add button, The Appointment would be titled
Dr. Jones.
on May fifteenth at 1 PM for one hour, the location would be the address...
Or, of course, you could go from field to field entering the start date,
picking the time, and so on; but being able to write it out like one sentence
is great!
The custom reoccurrences is better than the native calendar app.
There is more, but that to me is worth the $4.99.
Richard

Re: IPhone Email Questions

2019-04-30 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I don't have your second question around anymore Joy. What's the
problem? Are you able to double tap edit in your mail app, select the
messages you want to delete and then hit the trash button? If not,
what's happening? If so, is it that the messages aren't being deleted
from the server? If so, there's a setting somewhere on the host or in
the client that says something like delete messages from the server that
I've deleted or moved from this client. Without this setting, messages
will keep being downloaded to your phone until those messages are
downloaded to your PC and removed from the server at that time.

My phone is locked down, but I think you can go into Settings ->
Passwords and Accounts and then double tap on your email account. You
may also need to double tap on advanced after that. Like I said,
hopefully someone else who's iPhone isn't locked down by their employer
can be more precise.

BTW, if you're using a common email provider then the default settings
should be used automatically. For example, if you're using Gmail then
you'll get IMAP by default.

What you describe sounds like you use the POP protocol which should be avoided
like the plague. I don’t know your email provider, but most nowadays support
IMAP and if you set up your email account on your iPhone as well as your
computer using the IMAP protocol you will have no more issues such as you
describe and in addition you get proper syncing of emails, e.g. if you reply to
an email on your iPhone the email will show as replied to on the computer and
the corresponding sent message is in your Sent Items folder, if you delete an
email on your iPhone it will also be deleted on the computer. Essentially with
IMAP any changes you do are done on the server and any devices whether it’s one
iPhone and one computer or one iPhone and 5 computers get all the changes.

Subject: IPhone Email Questions

Good day,

I am having two problems with my email on the IPhone.

First, I have the one server and email account. I mainly use my Email on my
primary device which is not my IPhone. I have my mail set to delete from the
server when it downloads to this computer (my primary device), and not to
delete from the server on the IPhone.

My problems/questions are, that the phone is downloading mail more than once
even after the message has gone to my primary computer and therefore is no
longer on the server. Is there a way to stop this from happening?

And what makes that problem worse is although I have repeatedly checked and followed all
the instructions I could find (and tried a few variations) I have been unable to delete
the entire contents of my in-box. I have "marked" the messages in every way
possible but nothing I do changes the delete button from dimmed. Is there some other
background setting I need to change or something I can fix so I can mark and delete all
these messages at once? It is time consuming and very unpleasant to have to do them one
at a time, and to have gotten rid of a substantial number only to see them all come
flooding back is very frustrating. (To be Extremely polite!)

Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Joy

Pop or iMap are set at the server, not on the device; so you cannot have pop on

Using very old systems with new software is bound to run into problems.

Carolyn, as for the sending issue, that sounds like an SMTP settings issue.
You'll need to check with your Internet Service Provider as to what they should

Learning new things is good, but spreading misinformation out of
ignorance is not so good. * Wink *

There are still use cases where POP is a perfectly acceptable mail
protocol, such as when you don't want to leave your mail on someone
else's server and you're only checking it from a limited number of
devices. I used POP long after the IMAP snobs looked down their noses at
me! * Tongue in cheek *

That being said, if you are accessing your mail from multiple devices or
even multiple email clients from the same device, then it's likely you
should be using IMAP.

You do need to check the settings on both the clients and the server to
get everything right if you'll be using POP. Not all servers will have
the same POP options either. Google does like to make things better.

Also, POP is not much older than IMAP, or another way to look at it,
IMAP is much older then people think.

Removing email contacts from the mail App

Hello everyone,

I feel I have asked this before. But if I did, I apparently must have deleted
any responses I received. I try to keep them, so I don’t possibly repeat

Anyway, how do I remove email addresses from within the mail App?
There are some I have that aren’t any good anymore. So I would like to get rid

Any help is much appreciated.

I am thinking that perhaps you can only set up an account if you are the one
paying the bill.
If the app gets the sign on information from your spectrum modem then you can
only use it when you are in range of that particular modem. That is the way my
husband‘s iPhone is set up.
I set mine up by putting in the user name and password and I can use it even
when there is no spectrum available.

My only complaint about the app is that I like to use the live TV tab to pick
what to watch. I have not found a way to turn off the video sound so that I can
hear the voiceover reading the other choices. Very aggravating but usable .

RE: IPhone Email Questions

2019-04-30 Thread Alan Lemly
BB,

As others have said in this thread, the ultimate disposition of your emails on
the host server will be a function of your settings there. Gmail allows me to
have both IMAP and POP turned on and allows me to specify what to do with the
emails I download to my computer and Outlook 2010 which is my POP device. Since
I wish to retain all my email, I have it set to retain all emails on the server
and transfer them to the All Mail folder. However, If I go to that All Mail
folder on my iPhone Mail app which is set to IMAP, I'm pretty sure any emails I
delete there will be removed from the gmail servers. I'm not sure what Comcast
will let you set for your email account but I do think any emails you delete
from your iPhone's IMAP email account will be deleted from the Comcast servers.
So if you think you might want them downloaded to your computer, be sure to
open your email client on it and initiate the download before the deletion.

I also use Pop on my computer and don’t see why it should be avoided if it is
my preference. My question is, if I put the same account on the IPhone using
IMap, when I delete the email on the phone, will it delete it from the server?
I will use my pop account to download what I wish to keep so I don’t want to

I'm afraid I have to disagree with a couple of the comments made on this
thread. I'm not arguing that how I have my email settings configured is the
most efficient or effective in this day and age but it works for me so I'm
sharing. I have a single gmail account which I have set to handle both POP and
IMAP. I use POP on my computer with Outlook 2010 because I got used to POP and
downloading my email to my computer back when I first started using email many
years ago. I have my iPhone set to IMAP. In my online gmail settings, I have
the POP forwarding setting set to retain all email on the gmail servers in the
All Mail folder after messages are downloaded to the computer. So I am
successfully using IMAP on one device and POP on another device.

I investigated the procedure to convert my computer email to IMAP many years
ago and decided the process wasn't worth the effort and could cost me all the
emails I had previously downloaded into Outlook folders while using POP.

IMap, when I delete the email on the phone, will it delete it from the server?
I will use my pop account to download what I wish to keep so I don’t want to
have a bunch of emails left on the server.

Carolyn, as for the sending issue, that sounds like an SMTP settings issue.

My computer is on IMAP. Recently, I got my Gmail address on my computer, but
have some of the same issue Joy described. Is there a way to check which I have
on the phone and to change, if it is on POP?

And what makes that problem worse is although I have repeatedly checked and
followed all the instructions I could find (and tried a few variations) I have
been unable to delete the entire contents of my in-box. I have "marked" the
messages in every way possible but nothing I do changes the delete button from
dimmed. Is there some other background setting I need to change or something I
can fix so I can mark and delete all these messages at once? It is time
consuming and very unpleasant to have to do them one at a time, and to have
gotten rid of a substantial number only to see them all come flooding back is
very frustrating. (To be Extremely polite!)

Any tips or tricks would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Joy

what to do with them, Apple Insider

AppleInsider, Front page News - Thursday, April 25, 2019 at 12:26 PM

How to reset your old AirPods when you've bought a new set - and what to do
with them

AirPods are expensive devices, you shouldn't just drop them in the trash.
Fortunately, there are things you can do from selling them, to giving them
as presents. You just need to be careful -and you need to prepare the
AirPods first.

It doesn't seem like twenty minutes since you dropped $160 on the original
AirPods, and yet look at you now. If you haven't already spent $200 more on
the new AirPods 2, then you're thinking about it. And so you should, because
AirPods 2 are superb. Yet surely few of us can just regard AirPods as
disposable, so to help you afford the new ones -or to help assuage any guilt
at your spending habits -here's what to do with your old AirPods.
You won't get $200 for them and you may not get anything at all, but there
are ways to get some cash and there are some ways to do good with them. Plus
whatever you choose, there are also some things you must do in order to let
those old AirPods work for someone else.

Trading in or recycling
Stop us if you've heard this one. Apple has a trade-in program where you get
money for your old device and if it's really not worth anything, they'll
take it from you anyway and pop it through their extensive recycling system.

Except they don't do anything with AirPods, the company's most rapidly
deteriorating product.

Strictly speaking, you could return AirPods via Apple's last category,
"Other devices". But it will only be for recycling, you won't get a trade-in
rebate.
Similarly, you can sell or buy a dozen different Apple products at Gazelle,
but not AirPods.
If the makers and one of the major repurposing sites won't touch AirPods,
there are others who will. BuyBackWorld takes AirPods and currently will pay
up about 30 bucks for them. That's for typically used AirPods. If yours are
broken, you'll get no more than a dollar for them. Equally, if they're used
but in brilliant condition, you might get $37.
And if you have never used your original AirPods and they're still in their
sealed box, well, you can get $70, but just take them out and use them.

Similarly, there is a firm called MyPhonesUnlimited which quotes $50 for
AirPods in good condition.

Note that AppleInsider hasn't used either of these firms, and there may well
be others too, which may give you a clue to what we've done with ours.

Sell them yourself
We'll keep this short. You could sell your AirPods on services such as eBay,
Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. There are lot of AirPods on them at the
moment and in most cases all you can see is how much people are asking for,
not how much they're getting.
Except if you do an Advanced search on eBay.com, you can get details of
recently completed sales.
According to that, people have been getting between $85 and $130 for
original AirPods.
If this were the other way around, if we were telling you how to buy
original AirPods, we'd be throwing in phrases like buyer beware now. There
are a suspicious number of 'brand new' AirPods 1 out there, and it's also
common to see people trying to sell the left and right AirPods separately.
Buying AirPods this way isn't straightforward, and trying to sell yours in
that market isn't going to be much easier.
We've yet to see a single listing on any such site that mentions how the
battery life has deteriorated in the AirPods, either, so you can expect that
a lot of sales are followed up by complaints and refunds.

Speaking of battery life
There are a lot of very good reasons to buy AirPods 2, and an even better
one is because the minuscule batteries in your old set are nearly depleted.
If you got the AirPods at the earliest time you possibly could, December
2016, then it's probable that they now last for half the time they used to,
and possibly even less.

These are original AirPods from December 2016 and their battery level after
less than two hours use
It's a sad fact, but the battery life in your new AirPods 2 is going to
decrease in exactly the same way. So give it a year or two and now you may
find that it's convenient to use the old ones while the new pair is being
recharged. If AirPods lose half their battery life but you have two of them,
you'll effectively keep that same long listening time.
You've just got to put up with seeing those unused AirPods 1 in your case or
on your desk for a couple of years first. If the guilt at having expensive
items unused gets too much, you could give them away as a present.
You should tell the person about t

IPhone Email Questions

2019-04-30 Thread J.Cyr
Good day,
I am having two problems with my email on the IPhone.

Thank you,
Joy

RE: apple health app

2019-04-30 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I'm not saying this is necessarily true, but you might be surprised what
experienced paramedics, police officers know. There may be many who could be
well aware of the fact that all they have to do is to bring up SIRI and turn
off Voiceover.

True, a sighted person may not know the gestures. I am not willing to unload
VoiceOver each time I am done using my phone, just in case of emergency. I
don't know a good way around this, if someone did get your phone/device and you
were not able to respond or use it in an emergency. The only thing that comes
to mind is my spouse knows the basics of using VoiceOver, and even understands
the speed I have it set at, so she could turn VoiceOver off.

Exactly, in such a situation pulling up the compass app is all you need to

Do any of these apps tell you which way you are facing? The last time I was
using Apple Maps it told me to go east for so many feet. The problem was that
I was not sure which way was east.

RE: Etekcity Bluetooth Scale

2019-04-30 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Bill,

I don’t know anything about the accessibility of this scale/app and was going
to suggest to maybe stick with one of the smart scales people on here already
own and have found accessible such as the Nokia (formerly Withings) Body Plus,
the Qardio etc. Then I looked this one up on Amazon and must say I was
surprised at how cheap it is. Even here in Canada with our currently relatively
high exchange rate it is only $34.99 which probably means it’s $227 or $28 in
the States and that is certainly super cheap when it comes to a connected
scale. Since you can buy it on Amazon I would say for that price you should
just order it and try it out, if it is not accessible just pack it up and send
it back for a refund.

When I searched for the Etekcity scale I also saw results for another scale
which has a description which is virtually identical and also in that mid to
high $30 Canadian price range, it is this one:
RENPHO Bluetooth Body Fat Scale - Smart BMI Scale Digital Bathroom Wireless
Weight Scale, Body Composition Analyzer with Smartphone App Body Fat Monitors,
396
lbs

Can anybody tell me whether or not the VeSync app and theEtekcity Bluetooth
scale are conveniently accessible via voiceover?

And, of course, I would like to know if I would be able to read the
measurements from the scale via voiceover on my iPhone.

Thanks for any insight anybody can offer here!
