Re: Query about iOS icons

2019-08-31 Thread Robin Frost
Hi,
Lovely to see you here. I tried the first with him watching but it didn’t go
so well. II found him a video for beginners with iPhone X so hopefully that’ll
help for now but yes such a list for various operating systems would help not
only with assisting people we know but also with dialoging with tech support or
app developers and the like. I would certainly appreciate it.
Take good care.

Robin,

Wow, this would be wonderful if this list could be made. After this we could
even expand it to Windows icons, Mac icons and so on.

Meanwhile, two suggestions:
Whenever you can, perform slowly the necessary steps with VoiceOver and let the
person look out for what you're doing. This way they will see exactly what they
should do because even though you're working with VoiceOver, visually it will
be the same.

Another suggestion, now regarding the list, we could start by adding icons that
we already know from googling these stuff. For example, usually, the "Gear"
icon will be the Settings button. Likewise the "Hamburger" or the "Three dots"
icon will be the "More options" button. And the list goes on :)

Cheers,

Re: A problem with I O S 12

2019-08-31 Thread Anna Dresner
Hi Kay,

What's happening is that the rotor is switching from Messages to Actions. You
can turn it back to Messages and then flick down. Also, if you flick down to
the next message and then flick down with two fingers to have it read, the
rotor stays on Messages, so you can flick down to the next one without changing
the rotor. If you flick right while reading a message, the rotor switches to
Actions.

Anna

Re: Asking Siri to play voice mailbut volume too low!

2019-08-31 Thread Joshua Hendrickson
Here's an option that might work for you. With my iPhone 8 and my
Verizon carrier If I have Siri call my own phone number, my voice mail
comes up. I enter my password for my voice mail and when I begin to
listen to the voice mail I want, I just move my phone away from my ear
as normal and it goes to speaker mode. Good luck.

Re: Query about iOS icons

2019-08-31 Thread Robin Frost
Hi Everyone,
Thanks for replying I feel a smidge less alone now. It really would be a
valuable resource to have even if we google the instructions it’d be helpful to
be able to say tap on the thing that looks like whatever shape it might be
depicting. Right now my sighted friend new to iPhone land is having difficulty
getting himself to the composition or edit field for the body of his text
message and for the life of me I don’t know how to help guide him there. But I
did find a video on youtube for iPhone X beginners so perhaps that’ll help. But
glad it isn’t just me who longs for such a resource even if it’d just give us
the basic sense of the icons they’re seeing and what they might look like.
That should be Anna’s next book there we go ☺
Take good care.
Robin

Gadget recommendation: foot pedals to flick left and right.

2019-08-31 Thread Matthew Bullis
Hello, in looking for a gadget which would let me step on pedals to accomplish
keyboard functions, I found
www.rjcooper.com
and his various adaptive switch controls. I don't get any commission or
anything, so it's just a recommendation for this unit. I have the ability now
to step with my lebt foot to flick left, and my right foot to flick right. If I
hold the pedal down, it will wait a half second then quickly keep flicking in
that direction. The unit has to be programmed with the keystroke you want that
switch to perform when you order. The interface unit has several buttons on it,
but you basically only press the power button. The unit has a screen and no
beeps or audible feedback. Having this unit press the left and right arrows for
me allows my fingers not to get so tired when constantly flicking right, and
occasionally left. The whole package with shipping was $135. Enjoy if you
decide to have RJ custom make you one, with whatever keystrokes you choose. He
had not received this request before, so my setup was new to him, though he
deals with many assistive tech needs, inclueing Voiceover. The arrival was
about a week from initial phone consultation to having the unit in hand.

Re: I'm having trouble sending email from a POP account.

2019-08-31 Thread Christopher Chaltain
Who's the provider for this POP email account? Is it the same company
that's providing your internet connection, such as Time Warner? I assume
this POP email account is working from your PC. Does it work from your
phone when you're on the same network as your PC? It used to be the
case, and it may still be, that in order to prevent their servers from
being used by evil doers, that you could only send email from systems on
their networks.

Either way, the best thing to do will be to search the web for waht SMTP
settings you should use on your phone for whoever's providing the POP
email account you're trying to use.

that. Is there anything that I can do to fix this problem? I want to use this

I want them to go to the POP account. Is there any way I can do this on my iPhone?
would an i map account be better? If so, I would need to get the settings for it. I

Query about iOS icons

2019-08-31 Thread Robin Frost
Hi,
Today I ran into a situation which highlighted for me the need for a resource I
and I’m certain others could benefit from. I was with a sighted friend and
someone was helping them with their phone and was explaining to them that the
wi-fi symbol on the status line of the iPhone sort of looked like an umbrella.
It underscored for me how differently sighted people experience their devices.
Where we hear things verbally with little to no idea what the accompanying icon
might look like. Conversely we might say do you see something on the screen
that says “compose” to write a message when in fact they only have vision of an
icon whose symbol depicts something like a pencil in a circle thus making it
harder for us to at times be a help to sighted family or friends. as such I was
wondering if anyone had ever compiled a list of iOS icons in terms of their
verbal cues we hear with an accompanying description so that we could better
communicate not just with loved ones we might be helping but also app
developers should we be giving feedback and the like. I.e. bridging the gap
between the language of the iOS experience as both groups know it to be. If
such a thing exists I’d love to know of it or if someone would be willing to
compile such it’d be greatly appreciated by many I’m sure.
Thanks in advance.
Take good care.
Robin

I'm having trouble sending email from a POP account.

2019-08-31 Thread Kevin Minor
Hi.

I'm trying to get a POP account to send email on my iPhone using the native
email app, but I'm having a problem. When I go to that account, and I attempt
to send a message, I get an alert that the server doesn't accept relays, or
something like that. Is there anything that I can do to fix this problem? I
want to use this specific account to send email with for two reasons: I have a
different "not that I have configured for this account, and when someone
replies to these messages, I want them to go to the POP account. Is there any
way I can do this on my iPhone? would an i map account be better? If so, I
would need to get the settings for it. I have the POP account information on my
PC, so this is why I did things the way I did.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I found out by accident that I had lost my Apple Care after having it for two

Hi, Bonnie,

I was having trouble with my battery last year and it would normally go down to
20% before the day was over each day. I had the battery replaced last December
but it didn’t work much better. Since I wanted to have a reliable phone when I
was going to the NFB convention, I bought a new one. Do you still have Apple
Care? If you do, the cost of the battery should be minimal.

the battery in this IPhone 6 in the spring, it went from about 40 percent at
lunch to about 2 percent at 4 o'clock, having been used maybe half an hour's

for about 50 dollars. Being that your phone will update probably twice more, it
would be worth replacing the battery since you like your phone. If it does

Well there are a few things to try for sure.

The first thing I’d do is see whether it really turned itself off or just
stopped talking.

First, make sure it’s plugged in even if you think the battery is fine.
Plugging it in will actually start it if it’s powered off in most cases. While
you’re at it, and if it is plugged in, unplug it and replug it in. Note whether
the little power noise happens.

This doesn’t guarantee anything I found with my last major problem, but try
muting and unmuting it. If the phone has power, and if you can make it mute and
unmute, you’ll get that little haptic on muting, this is another good indicator
that you have power to it.

If you don’t have power to it, leave it plugged in for about 20 minutes and try
all this again.

So we’ve got power and

it that it was dead.

Speech and voice over are back, so all is well. Thank you, Deb, so very much. I
guess I like this phone more than I realize. It's terrific for email which I
have just started using.

Thank you as well for your willingness to help if I called today. That means a
lot to me.

So we’ve got power and it mutes and unmutes, but still not talking. Plug in
some headphones. Or if you have it paired to a Bluetooth speaker or headset,
activate that. If that gets sound, but the speaker does not, we can go from
there.

If you know you have power, you can try turninging voiceover on and off if
you’ve set that up on triple click home.

If you still can’t get its attention, we’ll probably have to talk in prep for
you to call Apple.

I’ve always been able ultimately to recover my phone, there are a few things
that typically happen. But the very most recent time it was a total system fail
and Apple had to replace it. Even that was a challenge, I had to use Rick’s
phone to get into mine to turn off Find My Iphone for them. If we get to that
miserable place, I can do that for you as well because it’s something they will
not do. But we’re not to that yet.

Let me know if none of this gets it, I’m home all day if you need to call.

I was just listening to notifications when my phhone either locked or turned

Another AirPod Issue

2019-08-31 Thread Duane Steele
I have an AirPod question. I'm hearing-impaired, yet still wear both airPods
so that the sound goes to the center of my head. However, sometimes the left
pod which is in the defective ear turns on, and the right pod doesn't, and, try
as I might, unless I forget and re-pair the AirPods, I can't rectify the
situation. Any suggestions?
