Re: Resolving a Bluetooth and voiceover issue

2019-12-29 Thread englishrider91
Wasn't this sighted as a new feature in iOS 13? I don't know if my UE Boom
speaker just has too old of a bluetooth version to make this work, but VO still
comes out of it when I connect it to my iPhone. If this is indeed a new
feature, I think it should be optional, maybe with a rotor toggle to control
it. I often want to play music or audio books using my speaker, but don't want
VO coming out of it. To me, Airplay is an unsatisfactory answer to the problem.
If I can do things like route music to one destination and my screen reader to
another, I should be able to do this on my iPhone. Yes, I know Windows and iOS
are totally different operating systems, but I should think this would be
possible; it doesn't seem all that complicated a thing to tackle.

Thanks,
Ari

I've found that it's random. Some times it crashes and some times it doesn't.
However, it's least likely to crash when you navigate after letting VO finish
speaking the page loading progress.

It must be different because when I first updated to version 251 or whichever
it was I also experienced this, but in the last few days this has gone
completely away for me. It almost seems like it was a server issue. I can now
open Facebook, be on the Newsfeed tab and swipe through the items forward and
backward and do whatever I want, go to the Notifications tab or Market Place
and back to News Feed and I'm never kicked out any more.

I have not had any issues in the most recent section of the tab.

Anne,
As Sieghard said, what issues are you having with Voice Memos?

Another free app to try that gives excellent recording quality is Dolby ON.
You can save to DropBox in M4a format, I don’t think MP3 is an option.
After you record a track, you can rename it, then double tap on share, then on
More audio apps, then save to Dropbox is one of the choices.
A little tedious to get to the save, but the sound quality is excellent.
Here is the app store link:

That is not really an acceptable or practical work-around unless you only use
SIRI once or twice a day. The way I use SIRI this would be pretty much
impossible since often and especially when I am out and about my phone is in my
belt holster and, now that it’s winter in Northern British Columbia, under a
jacket and often mid-layer. I use the remote on the Earpods probably at least
half the time or more. When I am at home or in my office and the phone is on
the desk in front of me I often use “Hey SIRI “ to bring up SIRI and to first
wake up the phone to turn off speech with a 2-finger double tap would be
entirely too much and it’s not like Apple couldn’t fix this issue.

RE: Resolving a Bluetooth and voiceover issue with external speaker

2019-12-29 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
I also find it interesting how something which has been the status quo at least
ever since I bought my first iPod Touch Third Gen in 2009 now suddenly should
no longer be so.
Bluetooth always has routed all audio including Voiceover and system sounds to
any Bluetooth device and it's only in iOS 13 and with some speakers where this
is no longer happening.
In the case of the person who has several Bose products and where Voiceover and
system sounds no longer comes to the speaker this is a disaster and she wished
it were back to what it was before.
To a few others it's a welcome change even though it's by far not a new feature
since it seems on most Bluetooth speakers it is still as it always has been,
i.e. Voiceover, system sounds and any audio stream which is playing come
through the speaker.
If Apple could make it an easy feature which one could turn on or off then
fine, I have no problem with that, but as it is it seems to be a bug which
affects some devices.
As for sighted people not wanting to hear Voiceover blasting out over the
speaker, if a Voiceover user is using their device and is with several others
who may not like this he or she can always mute Voiceover or turn it off
altogether once whatever audio is playing.

IMHO, all audio, including voiceOver should go through a bluetooth speaker or
head phones by default. If you don't want VoiceOver to go through an external
speaker then use Air Play or Chrome Cast. Of course, if Apple could add a
feature where you could send media to one bluetooth device while sending
VoiceOver somewhere else then that would be a nice feature.

Re: Resolving a Bluetooth and voiceover issue with external speaker

2019-12-29 Thread Duane Steele
Well, since I started this present discussion, I'll summarize what I've
learned. First, let me clarify one point. The Bose speaker was a gift, and
I'm aware of, and I have other speakers that allow VO to play through them.
Second, I am hearing that I cannot listen to anything but media in the Bose
speaker even when using the Bose Connect APP. Finally, I still believe there
should be a toggle option so that when you are playing media, you can turn off
VO from the speaker as it stands now. Thanks for all the input on this subject.

Re: Resolving a Bluetooth and voiceover issue with external speaker

2019-12-29 Thread Mary Otten
I think it should be a toggle. Generally, I think this is a great change. I do
not ever want to hear voiceover through a Bluetooth speaker. But I understand
there are use cases for it. So I think the best solution would be a toggle. I
don’t see that this is at all the same as plugging in a headset. Often, people
use Bluetooth speakers somore than one person can listen. There is a training
scenario where voiceover would be useful in such cases, but there is also an
equally valid scenario where absolutely no one wants to hear voiceover over the
speaker interrupting the entertainment. it seems ridiculous to expect someone
to purchase an airplay speaker, if they have a nice Bluetooth speaker which
meets the entertainment need.

2019-12-29 Thread Duane Steele
Perhaps this should be an optional situation. Sometimes VO is okay left on the
phone. But then, when important notifications come in, they are missed because
they don't get heard on the bluetooth speaker. Sometimes, you would like to
hear important texts through the speaker. I'll say this however. Updating the
phone will still allow you to hear your music through your speaker. VO should
definitely be a preference.

RE: Resolving a Bluetooth and voiceover issue with external speaker

2019-12-29 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
If you want that you can get an Airplay capable speaker which does exactly what
you say. I personally completely agree that with a Bluetooth speaker Voiceover
and all sounds should come over the speaker, after all, if you plug in a
headset or wired speaker you don't expect just the music to come over the
speaker and Voiceover to stay on the device. Many Bluetooth speakers have
microphones and you can have your phone charging somewhere while listening to
music or an audio book elsewhere, but in that case I prefer to also hear
notifications on the speaker, hear Voiceover announcing an incoming call etc.
This is obviously a bug which affects Bose and a few other devices, I
personally don't have any devices which do this. Both my Wonderboom 2 and my
Outdoor Tech Turtle speakers play all audio via the speaker and so do my
headphones, a Logitech H800, an Aftershokz Air and a Plantronics Edge.
A good friend of mine has a Bose speaker (not sure which one), but I'll maybe
ask him to bring it tonight since he is coming here for dinner and I'll connect
to it and see what happens.

Sieghard

This is truly funny. I believe it was a year or so ago that many blind users of
VO demanded that VO stay with the iPhone and music and other media play through
a Bluetooth speaker. This made a lot of sense because it allowed a user to
adjust volume and other settings, select a play list or source, etc, from their
phone without blasting VO through the speaker. This makes the most sense to me.

RE: Sorry about the problem with my post.

2019-12-29 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
And one easy way to eliminate the router/modem is to pull the plug, wait 30
seconds and plug it back in. Wait at least 3 minutes (many routers take that
long to boot up and reconnect) and then see if that helps.
Back in September a friend from Germany was visiting and he said his partner
suddenly could only do certain things online. I think she could call him using
WhatsApp, receive email but not send email or browse the web. I told him to
tell her to reboot the router and at first he scoffed at that suggestion saying
that how can it be the router if she can do some things but not others. The
next day he told me that he asked her to do it anyways and bingo, after she
plugged it back in all was back to normal. Routers are also devices with an
operating system where things get messed up and while they are usually able to
run for long periods without any intervention, an occasional reboot never hurts
and if there is any sort of connectivity issue that is the very first thing I
do.

I would have suggested waiting a little while and see if it straightened itself

RE: Siri and Voiceover Conflicting

2019-12-29 Thread Sieghard Weitzel

Sieghard ,
Thanks for bringing that to my attention. Your response comes off as if
you do not make mistakes. I was not expecting a response by the way,
simply providing some feedback.

After working with the program with voiceover on an iphone xr, after 30
seconds or so, the program closes itselves and you are brought back to
the home screen.
Please do test this. I’ve already restarted my phone but not yet
deleted and reinstall the app I’ll wait for that after testings.

I considered sending this message earlier but didn't, I wish I had. It sounded
to me as if it were a problem on their end, not yours. If it had been working
fine, then suddenly didn't, it usually is some kind of situation on their end.
I would have suggested waiting a little while and see if it straightened itself
out, or calling them to see if there is some kind of network problem. And, it
got straightened out, it wasn't anything you did wrong at all.

Eva,

I'm curious what the status bar tells you about your wifi connection and the
number of bars you're getting. Also, if I want to quickly prod my wifi, I open
the control center by placing focus on the status bar, doing a 3-finger swipe
up, swiping to airplane mode and turning it on then off again. A scrub gesture
will close the control center and return you to your previous location.

Hi Jen. Yes I forgot to mention that I did try resetting the network settings
and nothing happened. So I’m kind of at a loss. No my computer does not work
either so it’s got to be something with the router I would think! Thank you for
your help

Eva,
I would check your WiFi network first if you have anything else using WiFi.
It may be as simple as unplugging the router, waiting about 30 seconds,
plugging it back in.
Otherwise, Jen's suggestion to reset network settings may be necessary.

Also, your entire message was in the subject line.
You may want to make sure you are in the message body after you've written your

The only thing I can think of doing is reset network settings on your phone.
Does your computer work? Go to settings then to general then to reset. Now go
to reset network settings. This will not erase all of your data but you will
have to enter your wifi password again. Hope this helps.helps.

Does your computer work? Go to settings then to general then to reset. Now go
to reset network settings. This will not erase all of your data but you will
