RE: The proximity sensor on the new SE

2020-05-25 Thread bentleyj1952
No, I already had that set to speaker instead of auto. But, what a good try.

The main reason that I wanted to get away from the sensor was because it wasn't
working right. A reboot of the phone fixed that. Or, at least, some thing
fixed it. I would still like to be able to lock the phone in to speaker mode
but since the sensor is now stable, I could live with it if I needed to. For
now, I am guessing that this might be a bug in IOS 13.

Richard, I appreciate all of your time in digging around for different
suggestions.

Cheers,

James B

James, perhaps you are looking for Call Audio routing?
Settings, Accessibility, Touch, Call Audio Routing.Call audio routing
determines where audio will be heard during a phone call or FaceTime audio.
It defaults to automatic.
Maybe setting it to speaker will do what you want if that is to always have it
on speaker.

Tipping and the Uber Eats App

2020-05-25 Thread Andy Baracco
I can't figure how to choose an amount to tip in the uber Eats app.
Voiceover says that there is an edit box, but tapping on it does nothing, and
if you just hit the submit button it defaults to the maximum amount. I want to
tip, but not at 25% as there is often a delivery fee and a service fee on top
of that. If they really want you to tip, they should reduce or eliminate some
of those fees.

Re: The proximity sensor on the new SE

2020-05-25 Thread Shai
Hello Richard,
I thought that this setting would do it, but it does not. When one is
on speaker phone and puts the phone to the ear or touches the hand to
the top of the phone, the ear piece carries the sound and it does
not go back to speaker phone unless the user hides keypad and selects
speaker.
In short, I do not believe that there is a means by which to carry out
what the user is trying to perform. I think that the only means of
alleviating this issue is to lock/turn screen off while the call is
on speaker phone.

RE: Home and end keys on bluetooth keyboard

2020-05-25 Thread Richard Turner
Traci,
You may want to check out the Bluetooth keyboard commands on my web site.
I have the Logitech K480 and command up or down arrows do not bring up any kind
of a hotkey list.
That may be some special setup with your keyboard.
You may want to see if there is any documentation with that keyboard.

Wow, thanks for that. I also just figured out that command up or down arrow
seems to bring up keyboard shortcuts for the app you’re in. It has done it for
Mail, Home screen, and Safari.

Oh, it’s fun after so many years, I’m still abled to get tickled by tech.

Thanks

Re: How Do You Change Your Contacts in the Way They Show in Section Index?

2020-05-25 Thread Richard Turner
That setting is under settings, contacts.
Do you want it to alphabetize by last name, but show first then last in the
list?
That used to be the default, but check in your settings to be sure.

they do play well together.
There is a user list for Voice Dream Products as well.
I'll send along the info once I find it again.

Can I open a file and edit it, over and over again and save my changes?

James and others,
I started a completely new thread to make sure this message didn’t end up in
the old thread.

To answer James question, there are a lot of note taking apps.
The one that is built-in is Notes.
It is a good, basic, note taking app but has a pretty busy screen now with all
the new features.

My personal favorite is Voice Dream Writer, normally $9.99 but I believe it is
on sale through May.
It is made by the same person who makes my favorite book and document reading
app, Voice Dream Reader, and the best OCR app, Voice Dream Scanner, they are
all available in a bundle.

Writer is designed specifically for advanced note taking, though can be used
for just simple notes.
It only edits txt, but it can export into RTF or HTML as well; and he has an
experimental Word export that hasn’t worked for me of late.
It has a great spell checker, you can easily move paragraphs or sentences
around, delete whole paragraphs.
You can get definitions of words, or if you are not sure of the correct word,
you can write a general meaning and get word suggestions. Like, the fastest
animal in Africa and get Cheetah.

The manual is very good, though because it has complex abilities, it has a bit
of a learning curve, but well worth it.
It does not allow for folders to group your notes , but it has an easy search
box to find a note quickly.

Another popular one is Ulises. I’ve never used it, it seems pricy to me.

Meteor Notes used to be a good one too, but I’ve not used it in years. I
believe it allows for folders.

I do not think Pages or Word are worth your while since VoiceOver still doesn’t
report accurately where you are in a file.

Hi,

I am considering the possibility of using my iPhone SE 2020 as a note-taker
using Braille to input the text.

I am a Braille user and I am wondering what apps people recommend for taking
notes on an iPhone.

I have around 150 files on my current notetaker. If I can use the iPhone one
third as efficient as the Himms Braille Sense, then I want to try.

, This is my first iPhone so I do not know if there might be a native app
already on the phone or should I consider something from the app store.

Are other iPhone users switching from note-takers to the iPhone?

Regards,

James B

RE: Home and end keys on bluetooth keyboard

2020-05-25 Thread Richard Turner
It is easier than that.
Make sure quick nav is on and just press control+up arrow and you will be at
the top left app.
Control+down arrow will put you on the last item in your dock.

On my iPad mini home screen. Moving by containers. Say I’m in the dock, and I
want to move up to the first app of the main screen. As far as I understand it,
VO+shift+home should do this.

RE: Sounds and haptics

2020-05-25 Thread bentleyj1952
Hi Mike and all,

I am new to all of this but that isn’t stopping me from adding my two cents
worth.

I suspect that haptics

are important for the death and useless for everyone else.

Of course, the haptic feedback for the home button and the ability for the
phone to vibrate are very important.

Everyone stay safe,

Mike,

I'd suggest you go to Settings, Accessibility, VoiceOver, Audio, and Sounds and
Haptics. Take your phone out of its case. You can turn off sounds on this
screen and also turn off Haptics or change the haptic intensity. I feel pretty
sure you can adjust these settings in some combination where you can get a
sense of the differing haptic feedback. If not, I wouldn't worry about it.

Hi Alan,

I have my haptic setting at 100%, but when I swipe around the only thing I feel
is the reverberation of the speaker through the back of the phone and what I
hear is the click sounds that the phone makes when swiping. I reset it to, 0 ,

I completely agree that Ulysses is overkill if you don't intend to use if
for writing documents as well as notes. Drafts is splendid for notes.
Another one you might want to look at is Allegory. The developer has taken
steps to make it accessible. There are loads of choices for notes apps.
Another one known to be accessible is called Noted. It lets you record
audio lectures and timestamp notes. Quite useful for students. Check the
app directory on Applevis for even more on various note apps.

Did you change the haptic intensity found under Settings, Accessibility,
Voiceover, Audio, Haptic intensity? I suggest you try swiping through a few
different controls with that set to 0% and compare it to the 100% setting.

RE: Home and end keys on bluetooth keyboard

2020-05-25 Thread Richard Turner
It would help to know in which apps you are running into this.
Generally speaking if you are talking about going to the beginning or end of a
document, those are VO key commands, not just a single key.
Beginning of a document is CommandKey+up arrow.
End of the document is CommandKey+down arrow.
Beginning of a line is CommandKey+left arrow.
End of a line is CommandKey+right arrow.

Hi all, I have a cheep bluetooth keyboard folio here and I cannot get the home,
end, page up and down keys to respond with VoiceOver commands. I know I’m
hitting the correct buttons, because when I activate VO help, it says the
correct key names.

Is this a limitation of bluetooth keyboards or possibly a case of you get what
you pay for. Lol! It’s a great little Nulaxy keyboard, aside from it doesn’t
always respond the way I want it to.

Thanks,
Traci

RE: Note taking on an iPhone, for James, et al

2020-05-25 Thread Richard Turner
Drafts does sound like a pretty powerful app.
But, unless you really need all that extra stuff, you may not want to pay $20
per year.
The free basic version looks pretty good.
Worht checking out for sure.
Since I already own Voice Dream Writer, I’m happy with that, but someone just
getting into this should check out all the options they can.
Thanks for pointing out about drafts.

Regards,

James B

I reset it to, 0 ,
swiped around then set the haptic setting to, 100% , and didn't notice any
difference. Other than the Sound & Haptics in Settings and in Voiceover /
Audio, is there somewhere else to change settings? Hell, maybe everything is
okay and I'm just not getting my head wrapped around this whole haptic thing!

Home and end keys on bluetooth keyboard

2020-05-25 Thread Traci Duncan
Hi all, I have a cheep bluetooth keyboard folio here and I cannot get the home,
end, page up and down keys to respond with VoiceOver commands. I know I’m
hitting the correct buttons, because when I activate VO help, it says the
correct key names.

Is this a limitation of bluetooth keyboards or possibly a case of you get what
you pay for. Lol! It’s a great little Nulaxy keyboard, aside from it doesn’t
always respond the way I want it to.

Thanks,
Traci

Re: Sounds and haptics

2020-05-25 Thread Mike B.
Hi Alan,

I have my haptic setting at 100%, but when I swipe around the only thing I
feel is the reverberation of the speaker through the back of the phone and
what I hear is the click sounds that the phone makes when swiping. I reset
it to, 0 , swiped around then set the haptic setting to, 100% , and didn't
notice any difference. Other than the Sound & Haptics in Settings and in
Voiceover / Audio, is there somewhere else to change settings? Hell, maybe
everything is okay and I'm just not getting my head wrapped around this
whole haptic thing! LOL LOL

BTW; after turning my automatic updates to on in the iTunes & App Store,
I'm now getting notified of updates and how many when touching the App Store
icon on the Home screen.

Take care. Mike. Sent from my iBarstool.

Did you change the haptic intensity found under Settings, Accessibility,
Voiceover, Audio, Haptic intensity? I suggest you try swiping through a few
different controls with that set to 0% and compare it to the 100% setting.

RE: Managing Contacts in Outlook for iOS was RE: Outlook Frustration

2020-05-25 Thread Richard Turner
Outlook is going to do that no matter what you do as far as I can tell.
At least the native mail app doesn’t announce the number of suggested contacts
as you enter an address. You have to go look for them in the native mail app.
One of the reasons I stick with it, rather than the Outlook app.

Like Matthew, my Outlook for iOS is displaying my available contacts when I
execute the Compose button in the upper right corner of the screen to begin a
new message and start typing characters in the To field. You should read the
below which I copied from the Outlook for iOS FAQs section to make sure your
contacts are available to the app.

How do I save my Outlook contacts to my iOS contacts app?
To save Outlook contacts to your native address book:

First go to Device Settings > Contacts and confirm that the “Default Account”
is set to “iCloud”. If you do not see this setting that is OK, the setting
should only be available if you have more than one account added to your
device. If there is no account connected to the device, then your Outlook
contacts will be saved locally but will not be synced to other devices.

Second, open Outlook for iOS and in the left nav view open the Settings gear >
Select your account > Toggle ON the “Save Contacts” toggle.

Saved contacts will be added under the contacts in your iCloud account. These
contacts will sync to all devices which are signed in with the same iCloud
account. Note: You can only export contacts from one device at a time.

If a user has contact-export turned on both their iPad and iPhone one will need
to be disabled so that we are able to manage conflicts. Duplicates can take up
24 hours to be reconciliated.

Re: Having Trouble Getting Text Tone to Work

2020-05-25 Thread regina alvarado
I also sometimes don't get the tone. I have determined for me this happens most
often if I am doing something else in another app or on internet. Wish it could
be changed, but perhaps this was done on purpose by Apple to not bother someone
on another task? I don't really think this is the reason, but it is the only
one that makes sense to me. Maybe someone else knows?

Oh man, what a major difference this made when I changed from 100% to 50%.

Now, I don’t feel all of that thumping through the case of the phone. That’s
not so cool when my phone is on my chest while I’m in bed. And, I am still
getting the same good haptic feedback through the home button which I like.

This is great.

I love this phone.

Did you change the haptic intensity found under Settings, Accessibility,

Note taking on an iPhone, for James, et al

2020-05-25 Thread Richard Turner
James and others,
I started a completely new thread to make sure this message didn't end up in
the old thread.

It only edits txt, but it can export into RTF or HTML as well; and he has an
experimental Word export that hasn't worked for me of late.

I've never used it, it seems pricy to me.

Meteor Notes used to be a good one too, but I've not used it in years. I
believe it allows for folders.

I do not think Pages or Word are worth your while since VoiceOver still doesn't
report accurately where you are in a file.

Hi,

I am considering the possibility of using my iPhone SE 2020 as a note-taker

I am a Braille user and I am wondering what apps people recommend for taking
notes on an iPhone.

I have around 150 files on my current notetaker. If I can use the iPhone one
third as efficient as the Himms Braille Sense, then I want to try.

, This is my first iPhone so I do not know if there might be a native app
already on the phone or should I consider something from the app store.

Are other iPhone users switching from note-takers to the iPhone?

Dennis,

I don't know whether it's possible to get Voiceover to announce when your
screen automatically locks but I suspect not. I have a procedural solution that
I use. I don't like my iPhone to automatically lock since it seemed to do it at
the most inconvenient times when I had it turned on. So, I went to Settings,
Display and brightness, and set Auto-lock to never. Now, I simply press the
power button on my SE 2020, hear a click, and know it is locked. I much prefer
to control when the phone locks so hopefully you can find the setting that
works for you too.

Notes on the iPhone was RE: I'm not sure that all of my emails are getting through and. Thank you Anna.

2020-05-25 Thread Jennie Facer
Hi James,

I changed the subject line to reflect what you are asking. I ended up selling
my Braille Sense. I have totally changed to the iPhone for my note taking
needs. I use the native Notes app quite a bit. If you want something a little
more robust, Voice Dream Writer is a very good app for that. You can also put
Braille Screen Input on your rotor so you can type in Braille. You will find
this in Settings, accessibility, VoiceOver, rotor. Here, select Braille screen
input. Now, when you are in an edit field, turn your rotor to Braille Screen
Input and boom instant Braille. You will probably have to calibrate the dots so
the phone can get used to your fingers. You do this by pressing your right
three fingers on the screen, lifting them, then pressing the left three fingers
on the screen and lifting them. It is a quick gesture. There are two ways in
which to hold the phone so you can use Braille Screen Input. One is called away
mode. In this setting, you put the phone on its side and hold it in both palms
of your hands with the screen facing away from you. Make it to where three
fingers of each hand can rest on the screen. The other way to hold it is
tabletop mode. Lay the phone on a flat surface and place three fingers from
each hand on the screen. Someone else may do a better job in explaining
tabletop mode as I find it a little confusing. By the way, when you put the
phone in Braille screen input mode, it is all done in landscape. One way you
can also tell where your fingers are on the screen, is to put the phone in
exploring mode. While Braille Screen Input is on, put one finger on the screen
and hold it. Keep adding fingers on the screen and it will tell you kind of
where your fingers are. It will say something like, “Dot 4” that should be on
your right hand if you are holding it correctly. When you add fingers to the
exploring mode, you will get a feel for where the dots are on the screen.
Remember to keep one finger on the screen to remain in exploring mode.

This has been a load of information I know. Keep it for reference and don’t
hesitate to ask for mor clarification on anything you don’t understand.

Thanks,

Jenn

Hi James,

You're welcome. It sounds complicated, but if you know braille, you'll catch on
quickly. It can be a very efficient way of typing text on an iPhone, especially
if you type in contracted braille.

Best of luck,

Anna

From Apple Insider: How to fix the iOS Family Sharing bug without losing your app data

2020-05-25 Thread Richard Turner
How to fix the iOS Family Sharing bug without losing your app data By Malcolm
Owen |

A recent bug stemming from the Family Sharing feature of iOS and iPadOS is
preventing users from being able to run apps they already own on their devices.

Here's how to fix it while Apple prepares to patch the issue.

On Friday, a bug surfaced that affected a large number of Apple users,
primarily those who updated their iPhone or iPad to the just-released iOS 13.5
and iPadOS 13.5. The bug displays a prompt on screen claiming the app is "no
longer shared" with the user, and suggesting they buy it from the App Store to
continue using it.

Due to the mention of sharing within the message, the bug seems to be related
to Family Sharing, a function of Apple's account system that allows apps and
other content to be shared between a small number of people. This in theory can
save a family money, as apps do not have to be purchased multiple times.

Despite being primarily used for paid apps, the Family Sharing bug seems to
also impact other apps stored on a device that were acquired at no charge.
Popular apps including YouTube, Facebook, and Discord are also able to be
blocked by the bug.

Given the high number of complaints about the bug, it is probable that Apple is
working on some form of patch that fixes it in a future operating system
update, though that may take time. Apple has also seemingly attempted a
temporary fix in the form of reissued app updates , though this will not
necessarily work for every app affected by the problem, nor for all users.

Fixes for the problem fundamentally involve removing the app from the device,
then reinstalling it. While users could simply delete the app manually and
reacquire it from the App Store, this can lead to lost app data, or at the very
least needing to reauthenticate with the app itself.

There is a way of accomplishing the same thing while preserving the app data,
which involves offloading apps . Offloading apps will delete apps from the
device, but preserve any user-specific data, including files created by the
app, so the app will be ready to go from the state of when it was last used
once it is back on the device.

App offloading can be set to run automatically, making it a great way to
preserve the storage capacity of an iPhone or iPad, but the solution here
requires going down the manual route.

Manual Offloading Once you know of an app that is affected by the bug, head to
the Settings app, then enter General , then iPhone Storage or iPad Storage .
Scroll down the page to find the app in question, and select it.

On the new screen, which shows the app's size and documents and data size,
select Offload App . A confirmation dialog will appear, requiring you to select
Offload App once again.

Once selected the app will delete.

Offloading and reinstalling takes a few taps, but keeps your data intact unlike
normal deletion. Stay on the same page, and select the new Reinstall App option
where Offload App was previously located. This will re-download the app to the
device.

Further Notes Given the potentially high number of apps that may be affected,
it is advised to conduct this process while on Wi-Fi, rather than using
cellular data connections.

Mike,

I've gotten used to it by now so it's not quite as noticeable as when I first
converted to iOS 13.x but I notice the haptic feedback around the body of my SE
2020 as I swipe through the home screen icons or between any other screen
controls. I've got my haptic intensity set to 80% and I don't use a heavy case
on my iPhone but I definitely get haptic feedback around the body of the phone,
not just its home button.

  Subject: Sounds and haptics

  Hi all,

Under sounds and haptics, I find keyboard clicks and system haptics.

I experimented with each turned off and then turned on. I do not see the
difference.

  What am I missing?

  Cheers,

  James B

The sounds are what you hear through the speakers. The haptic vibration /
sound is the so called haptic feature simulating a certain feel through the
Home button. I should say that I only get this haptic feel / vibration when
using the Home button and don't know where else it does its thing.
