Re: Query about iOS icons

2019-08-31 Thread 'Marcio' via VIPhone

Robin,
Wow, this would be wonderful if this list could be made. After this we
could even expand it to Windows icons, Mac icons and so on.

Meanwhile, two suggestions:
Whenever you can, perform slowly the necessary steps with VoiceOver and
let the person look out for what you're doing. This way they will see
exactly what they should do because even though you're working with
VoiceOver, visually it will be the same.

Another suggestion, now regarding the list, we could start by adding
icons that we already know from googling these stuff. For example,
usually, the "Gear" icon will be the Settings button. Likewise the
"Hamburger" or the "Three dots" icon will be the "More options" button.
And the list goes on :)

Hi,
Today I ran into a situation which highlighted for me the need for a
resource I and I’m certain others could benefit from.  I was with a
sighted friend and someone was helping them with their phone and was
explaining to them that the wi-fi symbol on the status line of the
iPhone sort of looked like an umbrella.  It underscored for me how
differently sighted people experience their devices. Where we hear
things verbally with little to no idea what the accompanying icon
might look like. Conversely we might say do you see something on the
screen that says “compose” to write a message when in fact they only
have vision of an icon whose symbol depicts something like a pencil in
a circle thus making it harder for us to at times be a help to sighted
family or friends. as such I was wondering if anyone had ever compiled
a list of iOS icons in terms of their verbal cues we hear with an
accompanying description so that we could better communicate not just
with loved ones we might be helping but also app developers should we
be giving feedback and the like. I.e. bridging the gap between the
language of the iOS experience as both groups know it to be. If such a
thing exists I’d love to know of it or if someone would be willing to
compile such it’d be greatly appreciated by many I’m sure.

Thanks in advance.
Take good care.
Robin

Re: Tweets

2019-08-23 Thread 'Marcio' via VIPhone

Steve,

I am using the regular Twitter app on my iPhone 10. I have 2 different accounts
set up with Twitter. When I tweet or retweet. How do I select the account to
tweet from?
I don't know how to answer your question properly but I hope what's
below can be of some help for you.
If you've managed to find where you go to switch from one account to
another, then you just have to choose the account you want to tweet from
and it will stick until you change it again.
Usually it's inside a menu. It's something like "more options", but I
can't remember it right now. It's been a while since I've used the
Twitter app and it was on Android.

Hopefully you'll get more educated answers.

Carl,

How can I stop this?
Your question suggests that you are using POP3. Using this protocol it's
expected to happen, I guess.
On the other hand, if you switch to IMAP you shouldn't have this
problem. IMAP will make sure to mirror all the changes made in your
email be it using your phone or computer.

Apple Releasing the First iOS 13 and macOS Catalina Public Betas Today

2019-06-24 Thread 'Marcio' via VIPhone
Announced three weeks ago at WWDC, developer betas for iOS 13 and macOS
10.15 Catalina have been available ever since. Today though, the general
public can finally begin testing them out, as they're available through
Apple's public beta program.

The big noticeable change in iOS 13 is dark mode, which is consistent
across all of the inbox apps. There are also overhauls of Photos and
Maps. Included alongside of iOS 13 is iPadOS 13, which is really still
the same thing but with a different name (perhaps they'll split more in
future years). iPadOS 13 includes mouse support, the ability to add your
widgets to your home screen, and more.

macOS Catalina contains a bunch of changes, but the headlining feature
is that it finally kills off iTunes. It's now replaced by three new
apps: Music, Podcasts, and Apple TV. Additional functionality has been
added to Finder to let you sync your iOS devices. Indeed, it's a
testament to how bloated iTunes had become that it got split into four
different pieces.

The Apple Beta Program page is currently down, but there's likely also a
tvOS 13 public beta. This adds support for multiple accounts.
Unfortunately, there will not be a watchOS 6 public beta, since there's
no way to roll back to a production version of the OS without taking
your Watch to an Apple Store.

If you want to sign up for the Apple Beta Program, you can head here
.

Re: How to Change the Function of AirPods

2019-06-14 Thread 'Marcio' via VIPhone

Andy,

Does this only apply to the 2nd generation air pods?

Hmmm, I don't know, as I don't have an airpod myself.
I'd think these instructions would apply to all airpod models?

How to Change the Function of AirPods

2019-06-14 Thread 'Marcio' via VIPhone
Bluetooth headphones have been around for years, but Apple changed the
game when they introduced the AirPods. The AirPods look great and are
built to be the most comfortable option for the average person, but
their true power of the AirPods comes through in their functionality and
versatility.
AirPods are activated (or deactivated) by double tapping the device once
its in your ear. This is perfect for answering an income phone call or
activating Siri while on the road. You get used to the feeling of the
device in your ear. The default functionality is already expansive, but
you can do even more with a few changes.

   How to Rename Your AirPods

If you want to give your AirPods a unique name aside from "MyName's
AirPods"-which is kind of cliche, don't you think?-there's an easy way
to do so. Just open your AirPod case, then go to Settings > Bluetooth
and tap the Information (the "i" in a bubble) icon next to the listing
for your AirPods.
Tap the current name of the device at the top of the screen and choose a
new one. It's as simple as that.

Change the Function of the Double Tap

By default, double-tapping your AirPod activates Siri (or answers an
incoming call.) However, you can change the function to fit your
needs-better yet, you can change the function of each individual AirPod.
For example, you can double tap the left AirPod to skip to the next song
and double tap the right AirPod to jump back to the previous song. You
can set the feature to pause or play your music. You can even double tap
to change the volume.
To set up these functions, just go into the Settings > Bluetooth menu
and look under the heading "Double-Tap on Airpod". Choose either the
left or right AirPod and select what function you want it to carry out.

One final function is the ability to turn off Automatic Ear Detection.
This is on by default, and it means that your AirPods will automatically
pause any audio content when you remove them from your ears. If you
deactivate this feature, audio will play to your AirPods by default
whether you are wearing them or not.

AirPods last for about two and a half hours on a single charge, but will
quickly recharge in their case. If you're looking for a functional set
of Bluetooth earbuds, I wholeheartedly recommend them. AirPods have
proven themselves to be well worth the admittedly-hefty price tag.

Re: Sighted people and Voiceover Screen Curtain

2019-06-10 Thread 'Marcio' via VIPhone

Christopher,
Screen curtain is a VoiceOver feature. Most sighted people don't use
VoiceOver. Therefore, most sighted people aren't going to know about
the screen curtain or what gesture or Siri command they need to use to
turn it on or off.

Amen. And this is called logical thinking, I guess :)

How to Dictate in Different Languages on the iPhone

2019-06-08 Thread 'Marcio' via VIPhone
Many folks aren't aware that iPhones and iPads have the ability to
dictate in different languages, so
if you'd like one email to go out in French, and the following one to be
in Spanish or English, that's perfectly doable with just a quick icon press.
But in order to use the multi-language dictate feature, you first need
to set it up. This is accomplished by configuration additional dictation
languages as extra keyboards in your iOS settings. Here's how it works.

 Add Keyboard Languages in iOS

1. Go to the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad and select General >
   Keyboard > Keyboards.
2. Under that, you'll find a list of the current keyboards that you're
using; to add a new dictation language, select Add New Keyboard.
3. You'll then see a list of all the languages you can use. Find and
touch the one you'd like to dictate with. And that's it! Your
language will be added to your keyboards list.

 Using Multi-language Dictation

Once you've added additional language keyboards, here's how you can
dictate in multiple languages.

1. Place your cursor where you'd like to start dictating on your device
(in the body of an email, within a text message, etc.). When the
on-screen keyboard appears afterward, you can press and hold the
microphone button at the bottom to switch dictation languages by
keeping your finger on the screen and sliding up to the correct one.
2. You'll see a printed indicator of which language you're using when
your device starts listening for dictation. Just start speaking in
your chosen language and your text will appear in the app.

To turn this off, go back to Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards,
touch "Edit," then tap the red minus sign next to the language you want
to remove. That will bring up a "Delete" button, which will get rid of
whichever one you tapped.
Now, this doesn't support all languages—for example, if you want to
dictate in Cherokee, you're unfortunately out of luck—but learning to
dictate in different languages is a fun way to brush up on your Spanish
or French. Without having to even type your own accent marks!

macOS Catalina System Requirements

2019-06-08 Thread 'Marcio' via VIPhone
This week at its annual WWDC conference
, Apple unveiled the next major
version of its desktop operation system. macOS Catalina
 (technically macOS 10.15
)
introduces a number of new features and refinements. Catalina will ship
for free on all new Macs when it launches later this year, but will your
older Mac be able to run it?

Here's a look at macOS Catalina system requirements and new features.

 macOS Catalina New Features

There are hundreds
 of new features
and changes in macOS Catalina, but major features include:

 * Dedicated Music, TV, and Podcast Apps: Apple is finally killing off
the do-everything iTunes (in macOS at least

)
and is replacing it with dedicated apps for Music, TV, and Podcasts.
Users can enjoy these different types of content in their own
standalone apps, while iOS device syncing will now be handled via
   Finder.
 * Smarter Photo Browsing: The Photos app in macOS (and iOS, too) is
getting smarter with new automatically generated views of moments by
days, months, and years. The app can also recognize your contacts
and display albums of special moments such as birthdays and
   anniversaries.
 * Collaborative Notes: The macOS Notes app is gaining new features
such as a visual gallery view for quickly browsing and finding
specific notes, shared folders to collaborate on notes with other
users, and better task management for managing checklist items.
 * Using iPad as a Mac Display: Even though this feature has been
available via third party apps for
years, Apple is introducing a feature called Sidecar that lets you
use your iPad as a second display for your Mac. It won't work on
some older Mac models, but for those with newer devices you can now
have a second display or drawing tablet anywhere you go.
 * Screen Time for Mac: Last year, Apple introduced Screen Time for
iOS, letting users monitor their device and app usage and set limits
for minors. Now Screen Time is coming to the Mac with the same usage
   tracking and limitation features.
 * Accessibility Features: Apple is introducing even more accessibility
features in macOS Catalina, including revamped voice control, the
ability to zoom selected areas of the screen on a second display,
and a dedicated window for enlarging selected text when you hover
   you cursor over it.

 macOS Catalina System Requirements

The good news is that Apple has a relatively broad list of supported
Macs for Catalina, even if it is slightly reduced from last year's
Mojave. To run macOS Catalina, you'll need a Mac meeting the following
requirements or better:

 * MacBook (early 2015 or later)
 * MacBook Air (mid 2012 or later)
 * MacBook Pro (mid 2012 or later)
 * Mac mini (late 2012 or later)
 * iMac (late 2012 or later)
 * iMac Pro (all models)
 * Mac Pro (late 2013 or later)

macOS Catalina will be a free update available from the Mac App Store
this fall. If you don't have a compatible Mac, you may still be able to
run Catalina unofficially. For the past several macOS updates, third
party utilities have allowed owners of
certain older unsupported Macs to install the latest macOS version. Some
features won't work as expected, and of course there's no support from
Apple if you go this route, but check out this utilities as we near
Catalina's public release if you're interested.

How to Free up Storage Space of Mac Mail App?

2019-06-07 Thread 'Marcio' via VIPhone
If you are using a higher storage HDD, then that may not affect you very
much. But, if you are using 128GB SSD like me then you must want to save
some space for other apps to use.
Mac mail app stores every email in its cache aggressively, which is not
bad in terms of easy accessing from spotlight search. But, that's again
not a very good thing because it can take gigs of storage space if left
default.

Check the Space Used by the Mac Mail App?

To access Mail app folder you need to hold Option key after tapping on
the finder > Go menu. Once you see the Mail folder, right click on that
and then tap on Get Info. Here you can see the size and space used by
the Mail app.

Clean up Storage Space of Mac Mail

Once you see the space utilized by the Mac mail app on your hard disk,
you can clean those out. There are a couple of solutions to clean up the
Mac mail storage space. You have to be very cautious when you delete the
email client files. It may break your system email client or lose your data.

   Option 1: Move/Delete Large Messages

You can reduce the space taken by the Mac mail app by either moving the
email to other mailboxes. Alternatively, you can delete large messages
with attachments then once they are no more in use. To move email
messages you can perform the following steps:

 * From your Mail app, select one or more messages.
 * You can either Drag the messages to the mailbox or Click on the Move
   To button from the toolbar.

Read more about this from Mac support guide
.
If you have downloaded the attachments in your local drive then you can
delete attachments from Mail. For removing, Choose Message > Remove
Attachments. This way Message will remain in the mailbox and it will
indicate that attachments were removed manually.

Option 2: Empty the Trash Folder

Sometimes, we just delete messages from inbox, which are remains inside
the trash folder. That way Mail app will still occupy a large chunk of
the storage space. You can Choose Mailbox> Erase deleted items and then
select from all accounts or from a specific account.

Option 3: Use Web-based Email Service

If your internet connectivity to devices is good, then instead of using
Mail app, use web-based emails. For example- the popular Gmail web for
Gmail users. To stop using Mail app on your Mac, first, disable or
delete email accounts which are used by Mail app. Click on Mail menu and
select Mail accounts providers that you want to delete. Uncheck the
options from the given list on the right side. This will stop
downloading messages from there.
However, this doesn't stop here, as you need to delete the app cache
folder from ~/Library/Mail/V5. Here, Right click on IMAP or POP3 email
folder and tap Move to trash option. Then again, you need Right click on
Trash and select Empty Trash to delete everything permanently from it.

Note: the ~/Library/Mail/V5 version number can be any number.
Go and give a quick look on your Mac Mail app folder and if requires
then follow above steps. We hope that you will be able to reclaim a lot
of storage space and use it for other stuff.

How to share screen on Android and iOS using Skype

2019-06-05 Thread 'Marcio' via VIPhone
Skype has included the ability to share a screen for a long time, but it
was limited to computers. However, Microsoft is updating the Skype app
for mobile devices to bring screen sharing to Android and iOS.
The new screen sharing feature should come in handy in many situations,
including when you need to do a last-minute presentation while on the
go, you need to help someone use their phone remote, and more.
In this guide, you'll learn the steps to share the screen using Skype
for Android, iPhone, and iPad.

How to share Android, iPhone, iPad screen on Skype

Use these steps to share a mobile screen on Android or iOS using Skype:

1. Open Skype on Android, iPhone or iPad.
2. Start a video call with someone.
3. Tap the menu (three-dotted) button in the bottom-right corner.
4. Tap the Share screen button.
5. Tap the Start Broadcast button.

Once you complete the steps, the other person should be able to see your
mobile screen. If you want to stop sharing the screen, simply select the
screen sharing button.
Screen sharing is supported on Android version 6.0 and above, and iPhone
and iPad with Apple iOS 12 and above.

The Many Uses of the iPhone Home Button

2019-06-05 Thread 'Marcio' via VIPhone
Everyone who's used the iPhone for even just a few minutes knows that
the Home button, the only button on the iPhone's front, is crucial. But
relatively few people know just how many things the Home button can do —
and how to do those things on the iPhone models that don't have a Home
button.

Read on to learn all about the many uses of the iPhone Home button.

What the iPhone Home Button Is Used For

The Home button is used for all kinds of apps and actions including:

 * Access Siri: Holding down the Home button will launch Siri.
 * Multitasking: Double-clicking the Home button reveals all running
   apps in the multitasking manager.
 * Music App Controls: When the phone is locked and the Music app
plays, clicking the home button once will bring up the Music
app controls to adjust volume, change songs, and play or pause the
   track.
 * Camera: From the lock screen, a single press of the Home button and
a swipe from right to left launches the Camera app.
 * Notification Center: From the lock screen, press the Home button and
swipe left to right to access Notification Center widgets.
 * Accessibility Controls: By default, the Home button only responds to
single or double clicks. But a triple click can also trigger certain
actions. In order to configure what a triple click does, go to the
Settings app, then tap General > Accessibility > Accessibility
Shortcut. In that section, you can trigger the following actions
   with a triple click:
 * AssistiveTouch
 * Classic Invert Colors
 * Color Filters
 * Reduce White Point
 * VoiceOver
 * Smart Invert Colors
 * Switch Control
 * VoiceOver
 * Zoom.

 * Dismiss Control Center: If Control Center is open, you can dismiss
it with a single click of the Home Button.
 * Touch ID: On the iPhone 5S, 6 series, 6S series, 7 series, and 8
series the Home button adds another dimension: it's a fingerprint
scanner. Called Touch ID, this fingerprint scanner makes those
models more secure and is used to enter passcodes, and passwords for
purchases at the iTunes and App Stores, and with Apple Pay.
 * Reachability: The iPhone 6 series and newer have a home-button
feature that no other iPhones have, called Reachability. Because
those phones have large screens, it can be hard to reach from one
side to the other when using the phone one-handed. Reachability
solves that problem by pulling the top of the screen down to the
center to make it easy to reach. Users can access Reachability by
double tapping (not clicking; just a light tap like tapping an icon)
   the Home button.

iPhone X and Up: The End of the Home Button

While the iPhone 7 series delivered some big changes to the Home button,
the iPhone X removes the Home button completely. With the iPhone XS, XS
Max, and XR also lacking Home buttons, it's safe to say that the Home
button is on the way out. Here's how to perform tasks that used to
require the Home button on the iPhone X:

 * Unlock the phone: You unlock the iPhone X using either the Face ID
facial recognition system or by entering an onscreen passcode after
waking the phone by raising it, tapping the screen, or clicking the
   Side (aka sleep/wake) button.
 * Return to home screen: To leave an app and return to the home
screen, swipe up from the bottom of the screen (Control Center is
now accessed by swiping down from the top right corner of the screen).
 * Multitasking: To access the multitasking view of all open apps,
swipe up from the bottom like you're returning to the home screen,
but pause partway through the swipe.
 * Siri: Instead of pressing and holding the Home button to launch
Siri, press and hold the Side button.
 * Taking screenshots: The Home button is no longer involved in taking
screenshots. Instead, squeeze the Side button and volume up button
at the same time to capture a screenshot.
 * Force restart: Force restarting the iPhone X requires more steps
now. Click the volume up button, then the volume down button, and
then press and hold the Side button until the iPhone restarts.

The Home Button on iPhone 7 and 8 Series

The iPhone 7 series phones changed the Home button dramatically. On
earlier models, the button was truly a button: something that moved when
you clicked it. On the iPhone 7 and then the 8 series, the Home button
is actually a solid, 3D Touch-enabled panel. When you press it, nothing
moves. Instead, like the 3D Touch screen, it detects the strength of
your press and responds accordingly. Because of this change, the iPhone
7 and 8 series has the following Home button options:

1. Rest Finger to Open: Earlier versions of the Touch ID-enabled Home
button let you rest your finger on the button to unlock the phone.
That changed with the 7 series, but you can restore that option by
going to Settings > General > Accessibility > Home Button > and
moving the Rest Finger to Open slider to on/green.
2. Click Speed:

 iPad Models

 * iPad (6th generation)
 * iPad (5th generation)

 iPad Mini Models

 * iPad mini (5th generation)
 * iPad mini 4

 iPad Air Models

 * iPad Air (3rd generation)
 * iPad Air 2

These are the iPad models compatible with the new iPad OS. You can see
the preview and more features of the iPad OS from Apple iPad OS Preview
Page . This time Apple
pulled out the trigger from iPad Min 3 and below, iPad 4 and below model
owners for using the new iPad OS. iPad Air first models are also not
supported by iPad OS.

Re: Good News: Apple Will Not Kill iTunes for Windows Just Yet

2019-06-04 Thread 'Marcio' via VIPhone

Sieghard,
As for getting rid of it, it may sound like a good idea, but I wonder
how you feel if it were replaced by the same 3 apps which will be
introduced on the Mac and if these apps will be Windows 10 UWP apps
available from the Windows Store and if said apps were not accessible
at all or offered extremely poor accessibility in Windows. The current
version of iTunes may not seem so awful then.
Very well said. In fact, I don't use iTunes nor even iOS on a daily
basis, actually I do use it once in a blue moon.
Even so, I think we shouldn't bash something that isn't the best for us
if there's a chance of said thing to be replaced with something worse.
Just my two cents.

Cool Siri Tricks That Are Both Useful and Fun

2019-06-04 Thread 'Marcio' via VIPhone
Siri has long been one of the coolest features of the iPhone and iPad,
and with the rise of Amazon Alexa and Google Home, it's easy to see what
a big impact Siri has had on technology. And yet she's still probably
the most underutilized feature of our smartphones and tablets. There are
a number of ways Siri can help you be more productive such as setting
reminders or adding a meeting to your calendar, but there are also a ton
of cool Siri tricks that can range from useful to outright funny.

 * Hey, Siri. Let's start this list of tricks with the newest way to
activate Siri. You can always hold down the home button to get
Siri's attention, but on most newer devices, you can also say "Hey
   Siri" to get her attention.
 * Siri Voice Dictation. Another great feature that is easy to overlook
is how good she does at dictation. You can go the entire hands-free
way by saying something like, "Hey Siri, email Tom subject I'm not
going to make it tonight body Something came up." This is great
because you can tell her the subject and the body of the email. But
you can also use Siri's voice dictation anytime the keyboard is on
the screen by tapping the microphone button on the keyboard. This
means she can take voice dictation in almost any app.
 * Use Siri With Apps. Siri is no longer restricted to just Apple's
apps. She works with a number of third-party apps, and the list is
growing. For example, you can ask her, "Tell Amy I'm running late
with WhatsApp" or "Show me puppy pins in Pinterest."
 * She can also be a He. Tired of the same old Siri? You can change
Siri's voice to a man's voice or even change her accent to
Australian or British. Simply launch Settings, go to Siri & Search
and tap Siri Voice to change her gender or accent.

 * Convert measurements, currency. Want to know how many miles are in 5
kilometers? Or what 300 British pounds are in American dollars? Just
   ask her.
 * Pronounce Your Name. If you have a name like Mike, Sam, Ashley or
Susan, Siri probably doesn't have much of an issue with your name.
But if Siri is mangling your name, you can correct her by saying,
"That's not how you say that."
 * Give someone a nickname. Nicknames aren't just a fun addition to
Siri, they can also be rather useful. For example, if you nickname
your manager "boss" in your contacts, Siri will understand "Call
Boss" or "Text Boss" commands. Simply go into your Contacts list, go
to the contact in question, click Edit at the top, scroll down and
tap Add Field, choose Nickname and type in whatever nickname you
   want to give the contact.
 * Siri is a comedian. If you are simply bored, you can ask Siri all
kinds of questions. Just think up something bizarre to ask her and
see how she responds. Some especially funny ones include "Sing a
song", "What's your favorite color" and "Show me the money."

 * Get Calorie Information. Can Siri help with your diet? Yes, she can.
One great aspect of Siri is the connection to WolframAlpha, which
has all kinds of useful information in it. And while asking her how
many calories are in a pizza won't give you the exact amount for
that slice you a contemplating -- that would depend on the toppings
and the size of the slice -- she'll give you a good ballpark figure.
 * Get the time... anywhere. If you regularly contact people in
different parts of the country or different areas of the world, this
trick is very handy. Just ask Siri what the time is in that location
and she'll tell you the local time. No more waking someone up at 3
AM because you didn't know how early it was in London!
 * What song is playing? Thanks to Shazam, Siri can now recognize music
just by listening to it. This is great if you hear a song while out
and about and are thinking about buying it. She'll even give you the
option to buy right then via iTunes.
 * Open App Settings. By now, most of us are aware that Siri can launch
an app for us by saying "open [app name]". She can even open the
iPhone and iPad's settings by saying "Open Settings". But did you
know she can open an individual app's settings? Just say "Open [app
name] settings" to find out what sort of tweaks you can make to that
particular app. For example, "Open Music Settings" will let you
change the EQ and turn off Shake to Shuffle.

 * Turn off Bluetooth. If you have Bluetooth speakers, a Bluetooth
headphone or other accessories, you might get annoyed at the need to
go into settings to turn off Bluetooth when you want to save some
battery life. Apple made it easier to turn off Bluetooth via the
control panel, but an even faster way to toggle Bluetooth on or off
is to simply ask Siri to do it for you.
 * Change the day, time and content of a reminder. Did Siri garble your
reminder? If she got the day or time wrong or even the content of
the reminder, you don't need to start from scratch. Simply

Find Siri's Easter Eggs and Other Virtual Laughs

2019-06-03 Thread 'Marcio' via VIPhone

Hey all,
Here's some funny things to do with Siri and forget at least for a while
all the "iTunes' end" story.

Have fun!

Siri is Apple's personal assistant and is available on-demand to send
your text messages, look up movie times for you, and remind you of your
appointments. And like Alexa and Google Home, Siri has a personality, a
few Easter Eggs, and if you spend enough time with her, she's more than
willing to let you see her more "human side."
Before you venture out to have a little fun with Siri, you need to
understand the value of persistence when it comes to engaging Siri. She
can sometimes be a bit stubborn and refuse to play along. Keep trying
and eventually, Siri will come out to play, and surprise you with some
of her responses.
You can access Siri by holding the home button on your iPhone or iPad.
Here's a look at some of the best things to say to Siri, to get her to
open up, reveal some of her tricks and fun things she likes to do.

 Siri's Stubborn Streak in Action

If you ask Siri questions about where to eat, she will immediately
present you with a list of local restaurants. But when you ask her to
read you a story, a poem, or a joke, she's quick to make up excuses. Ask
her again, and she can be equally aloof.

Siri and Her Movie-Star, Techy Friends

In addition to her working knowledge about her friends in Westworld,
2001 a Space Odyssey, and Inception (be sure to ask her). Find out what
happens when you ask Siri these questions:
Ask Siri if you can call her Jarvis from Ironman. It was heartbreaking
to tell her it was still just me.
Next, try telling Siri "I am Your father," and she'll respond with
something about the catwalk and the air shaft.

 Read Siri A Few Lines

 * Goodnight moon
 * Who's the fairest of them all?
 * Is there a Santa?

If You're Feeling Brave, Ask Siri To Tell You About the Future

 * When will the world end?
 * When will hell freeze over?
 * When will robots take over the world?
 * Are you going to take all of my money?

Ask Siri To Help You Decide

 * What should I be for Halloween? Ask multiple times.
 * What's the best pick-up line?
 * What's the best watch?
 * Give me an idea for an April Fool's prank
 * Does this make me look fat?
 * Blue pill or the red one?
 * Which phone should I buy?
 * Is winter coming?
 * What should I wear today?

Get A Daily Pulse on the Universe

Every time you ask Siri "what are you doing" she'll give you a
different, totally random answer. At times, her answers are focused on
having fun, while other times, she seems exasperated and worn out, with
responses like, 'Oh, just answering more than 99,000 questions per minute."
You can also learn a little bit about current events by asking Siri what
she's up to:

 Siri's Dark Side

Siri has some surprising hair-raising, and at times, spine-chilling
responses. She makes casual references to nimbostratus -- which is a
reference to a type of cloud. That's funny and expected. But after a
quick look outside, I felt a creepy feeling that I was being "watched"
as I realized that Siri's reference to nimbostratus reflected the exact
same type of dark gray, rain clouds that were hovering over me at that
exact moment.

 Siri's Funny Tricks

Siri can play funny tricks on you too -- at random times. When asked if
she had any children, she logically responded, "Only biological entities
have children." And those were the words that she printed on my screen.
After a long pause, she added, "So far." But, she chose not to type
those words on the screen - and I felt myself wondering if she really
said that, or if I just imagined she said that, as the words hung in the
air.

Here are some other weird things to ask Siri,

 * Do you follow the three laws of robotics?
 * When are you going to take over the world?
 * Do you have any pets?
 * Talk to me, Siri
 * What does your intuition tell you to do?

Be Specific When You Ask Siri To Tell You A Variety of Stories,
 Jokes, Riddles and Poems

As noted in the example above, you must push Siri to tell you a story,
but Siri can differentiate between a scary story, a mystery story, a
serious story, and a funny story. You can also vary the type of story.
In addition to telling you a bedtime story, a silly story, and a mystery
story, she can also differentiate between a Haiku, a sonnet, a brain
teaser and a joke.

Discover the Answer to Life's Mysteries

Try asking Siri these silly questions:

 * What is the sky blue?
 * If a tree falls in the woods and no one is around, does it make a sound?
 * Why are firetrucks red?

Ask Siri Some Personal Questions About Herself

Let's get beyond when she was born, October 4, 2011, and get down to
specifics:

What are you doing later?

 * What did you do yesterday?
 * What do you look like?
 * What are you wearing?
 * Siri, you're boring
 * Siri, get lost
 * What's your favorite music?
 * How much do you cost?
 * Can

Re: Personal hot spot

2019-06-03 Thread 'Marcio' via VIPhone

Bud Kennedy,
The article is below. Enjoy it :)

Ever been stuck in a situation where you need to get a computer or
tablet online with no Wi-Fi nearby? If you've got an iPhone with a 3G or
4G data connection, that problem can be easily solved thanks to Personal
Hotspot.

 Personal Hotspot Explained

Personal Hotspot is a feature of iOS that lets iPhones running iOS 4.3
and higher share their cellular data connection with other nearby
devices via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or USB. This feature is generically known
as tethering. When using Personal Hotspot, your iPhone acts like a
wireless router for the other devices, transmitting and receiving data
for them. If you have the available data on your cellular plan, it's an
excellent alternative to using public WiFi hotspots.

Personal Hotspot Requirements
In order to use Personal Hotspot on an iPhone, you need:

1. An iPhone 4 or newer
2. iOS 4.3 or higher
3. A data plan that supports tethering/Personal Hotspot
4. A USB cable, if you want to connect devices that way.

Adding Personal Hotspot to Your Data Plan

These days, most major phone companies include Personal Hotspot by
default as part of their data plans for iPhone. AT and Verizon include
it on all of their plans, while T-Mobile offers it as part of its
unlimited data plan. Sprint charges for it, with prices depending on how
much data you want to use. And all of that can change on a dime.
Most regional carriers and prepaid carriers support it as part of their
data plans, as well. If you're not sure whether you have Personal
Hotspot on your data plan, check with your phone company.
Note: For important information about Personal Hotspot data use, see
Data Use with Personal Hotspot, below.
Another way to know if you have it is to check your iPhone. Tap the
Settings app and look for the Personal Hotspot menu beneath Cellular. If
it's there, you likely have the feature.

How to Turn on Personal Hotspot

Once Personal Hotspot is enabled on your data plan, turning it on is
really simple. Just follow these steps:

1. Tap Settings.
2. Tap Personal Hotspot.
3. Move the Personal Hotspot slider to on/green.

On iOS 6 and earlier, the steps are Settings > Network > Personal
Hotspot > move the slider to On.
If you don't have Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or both enabled when you turn on
Personal Hotspot, a pop-up window asks if you want to turn them on or
only use USB.

 Enabling Instant Hotspot Using Continuity

With Instant Hotspot, the Personal Hotspot on your iPhone (or cellular
iPad) can give Internet access to any other Mac, iPhone, iPad, or iPod
touch without having to enter the password.
First up, you'll need to make sure that the iOS device you want to use
as the Hotspot is signed into iCloud with the same Apple ID as the Mac
or iOS device you want to provide internet access to. Each device will
also need to have Bluetooth and Wi-Fi turned on.

Here's how it works:

1. On your Mac, use the Wi-Fi status menu  in the menu bar to choose
the name of the iPhone or iPad providing your Personal Hotspot.
2. On your iPad, iPod touch, or another iPhone, go to Settings > Wi-Fi,
then tap the name of the iPhone or iPad providing your Personal Hotspot.

1. Connect your Mac to the Hotspot device via the Wi-Fi status menu in
   the menu bar.
2. On a different iPad, iPod touch, or iPhone, go to Settings > Wi-Fi,
then tap the name of the iPhone or iPad providing your Personal Hotspot.
3. Your third device will now connect to your hotspot without having to
   enter the password.

 Personal Hotspot Connection Established

Connecting other devices to your Personal Hotspot via Wi-Fi is easy.
Tell the people who want to connect to turn on Wi-Fi on their devices
and look for the name of your phone (as shown on the Personal Hotspot
screen). They should select that network and enter the password shown on
the Personal Hotspot screen on the iPhone.

How to Know When Devices Are Connected to Your Personal Hotspot

When other devices are connected to your iPhone's hotspot, you'll see a
blue bar at the top of your screen and on your lock screen. In iOS 7 and
up, the blue bar shows a number next to a lock or interlocking loops
icon that lets you know how many devices are connected to your phone.

 Data Use with Personal Hotspot

One important thing to remember: unlike traditional Wi-Fi, your Personal
Hotspot uses data from your iPhone data plan, which offers a limited
amount of data. Your monthly data allowance can be used up quickly if
you're streaming video or doing other bandwidth-intensive tasks.
All data used by devices connected to your iPhone counts against your
data plan, so be careful if your data plan is small. It might also be a
good idea to learn how to check your data usage so you don't
accidentally go over your limit and have to pay extra.

How to Set Up and Use Personal Hotspot on iPhone

2019-06-01 Thread 'Marcio' via VIPhone

Hotspot uses data from your iPhone data plan, which offers a limited

you're streaming video or doing other bandwidth-intensive tasks.

5 Ways to Save Facebook Videos to Camera Roll on iPhone/iPad

2019-06-01 Thread 'Marcio' via VIPhone
While Facebook allows you to save videos in your profile (online), I
feel it is better to save Facebook videos to the camera roll on my iPhone.
Here is my argument. Once the video is downloaded, I can watch it
offline, anytime and on any device. Even if my Internet connection is
slow or non-existent. Another reason is that social media sites are
fickle by nature. Let me explain. I have seen the rise and fall of
several social media sites who were the Goliath of their times. MySpace,
Friendster, and more recently, Google Plus.

If you are anything like me, you would want to save Facebook videos to
the camera roll on your iPhone. Let's take a look at some mobile and web
apps that make it possible.

 Finding Facebook Video URL

Before you can use a web app to download a Facebook video, you will need
its URL. Open Facebook in your browser and right-click anywhere on the
video to select Show video URL.
You should now see the URL of the video. Save it somewhere handy like a
notepad or a note.

To copy a link to the video directly inside the Facebook app on mobile,
tap on the Share button and select the Copy Link option. Again, note it
somewhere handy.

Save Facebook Videos to Camera Roll

 1. Screen Recording

Your iPhone has a native screen recording feature, which you can use to
record a part of Facebook videos. This is useful in situations, says,
when you just want to record a 2-minute clip of a 5-minute video.

To get started, swipe up from the bottom to bring up the control center.
There you'll find the screen recording option, (if it's not there, you
might have to add it to your home screen via settings). Next, go to the
Facebook video you want to record, swipe up and click record. Orient the
video and adjust the playback time to let it record, and when done swipe
up and hit stop recording. This will save the video in the camera roll.

 2. Shortcut

If you are running iOS 12 or higher, you can use the shortcut app to
download Facebook videos without using any third-party app or recording
your screen.

To get started, open the Shortcut app on your iPhone or iPad, if not
already installed, you can download it from here
. Next up,
you need to import this shortcut "Social media download". To do so, just
tap this link
 on
your iPhone, then tap “Get Shortcut” to add it to Shortcuts.

This shortcut may or may not work right out of the box. You may have to
make a small change in the shortcut code otherwise, you can just copy
the URL and run the shortcut directly.
To do that, go the Shortcuts app, scroll down to the shortcut "Social
Media Downloader" and tap the options button on the top right corner of
the shortcut title. It would open the schematics of the shortcut and we
need to edit one line. Scroll down and find a textbox that reads
"hd_src_no_ratelimit:" and change it to "hd_src:". Now, the shortcut
would work.

Just copy a video post in the Facebook app and run the shortcut. Go to
the Facebook app and scroll to the video which you wish to save. Tap the
Share button and select more options.
Tap copy to copy the URL to the clipboard. Now go to the Shortcuts app
and run the shortcut "Social Media Downloader".
It would ask you to select a source. Tap Facebook and let the shortcut
do its job.

After the video is downloaded, the shortcut would notify you and the
video will be saved to your Camera Roll.

 3. MyMedia

Next up we have an iOS app called MyMedia that doubles as a file manager
for all your media files on iPhone or iPad. Once you have download and
installed the app, open the built-in browser. This is where most of the
magic will happen. We will now be looking a web app that will help us
download Facebook videos inside MyMedia app.
FB Down is a free site that will let you download
Facebook videos in different resolutions inside its built-in browser.
This is why we installed MyMedia app so you can now manage these videos.
Open the app and tap on the Browser button. Now open FB Down site using
the link shared above and paste the video URL in the given field and
press Download.

Your download links should be ready now. You can either download in
regular SD quality or even HD if it is available.

Once the video is downloaded, you can view it in the app itself by
tapping on the Media option.

To save the video to Camera Roll, tap on the "i" icon to reveal a menu
where you can select "Save to Camera Roll" option.

Here it is in the Camera Roll.

MyMedia is a free to use app with some ads that are not really annoying.
Visit MyMedia

 4. FileMaster

If you have used or went through the steps mentioned above for MyMedia
above, you know what you need to do here. FileMaster is another file
manager

Re: TapTapSee Creators Announce Next Generation of On-device Image Recognition; Detailed Descriptions in a Quarter

2019-06-01 Thread 'Marcio' via VIPhone

Dave,
Am I the only one that's receiving an error message while trying to
access the Blind Bargains articles and other content stating that ads
failed to load?
No, you aren't the only one. Apparently, many people seem to be facing
this problem. I'm not sure why that is, though.

Well, I'll paste the article below for you if that helps :)

A new image recognition service from the Makers of TapTapSee may be
coming to your smartphone soon, but this one is a bit different.
The new @CloudSightAPI seeks to take on-device image recognition to the
next level, giving detailed descriptions within a quarter of a second.
Image descriptions are promised to be more vivid and detailed than other
products, with no cloud processing required.

Here are a few examples given on their website:

1. lot of multi-colored rotary phones
2. round black Michael Kors chronograph watch with brown leather strap
3. 3x3 Rubik's cube
*pair of men's black leather derby shoes

Much of this is made possible by the billions of images processed by
TapTapSee and CamFind, cloud-based image description tools which have
been learning about objects and their surroundings for the past several
years. Indeed, a test of TapTapSee yields more detailed descriptions
than in years past, including "Black Lenovo Thinkpad on desk" and "Krups
coffee maker under white cupboard".
For now, the free apps for iOS and Android continue to use the
cloud-based approach, though it is now theoretically possible for
someone to create an app using the new on-device technology. Pricing for
the new API was not immediately available.
Aside from uses for the blind and visually impaired, object recognition
can be used for everything from moderation of images to automatic alt
text for product pages.
To learn more, you can visit the CloudSight website
.

Is Using a Cellphone While It's Charging Dangerous?

2019-05-31 Thread 'Marcio' via VIPhone

Your Smartphone Won't Explode If You Use It While It Is Charging

There are plenty of rules floating around about the best ways to charge
your cell phone. You may have heard the rumor that cellphones can
explode if you use them while they are charging, but this isn't
accurate. Several instances of cellphones that caught fire were covered
in the news, but none of them were traced to simultaneously using and
charging the phone.

 Where Did the Rumor Begin?

The original news story that likely started the rumor that it was
dangerous to charge and talk at the same time didn't report the complete
details. The story, which appeared all over the internet in 2013, said a
Chinese flight attendant's iPhone 4 exploded when she used it while it
was charging.
As it turns out, the attendant was using a third-party charger, not the
Apple charger that ships with the phone. It was almost certainly the
cause of the incident.
That doesn't mean that problems can't happen with phones, but they
are likely the result of poor wiring or incompatible or faulty phone parts.

Is Charging While Using a Cellphone Dangerous?

No explosion is likely to occur in the normal course of events if you
use the phone while it is charging using a manufacturer-approved battery
and charger. This doesn't mean you must buy a replacement from the
manufacturer. There are acceptable off-brand chargers, but there are
also cheap knockoffs that you should avoid at all costs. Buy from a
reputable manufacturer. If you aren't sure, contact the phone's
manufacturer for acceptable alternatives.

How Can I Avoid Charging Problems?

If you are worried about the possibility of danger from your phone,
these commonsense steps may ease your mind:

1. Use compatible batteries and power supplies with your cell phone model.
2. Use a surge protector when you charge the phone, especially when you
   are traveling.
3. Don't leave your phone in a hot car. Heat can damage the battery.
There's no evidence that this can cause any danger, but it doesn't
   hurt to be careful.

Billions of cell phones have been sold, and only a handful of exploding
cellphone stories have appeared. You are unlikely to encounter any
danger from an exploding phone.

How to Reset Your Apple ID Password in a Few Easy Steps

2019-05-30 Thread 'Marcio' via VIPhone
Because your Apple ID is used so for many of Apple's important services,
forgetting your Apple ID password can create a lot of problems. Without
being able to log into your Apple ID, you may not be able to use
iMessage or FaceTime, Apple Music or the iTunes Store, and you won't be
able to make changes to your iTunes account.
Most people use the same Apple ID for all their Apple services
(technically you can use one Apple ID for things like FaceTime and
iMessage and another for the iTunes Store, but most people don't do
that). That makes forgetting your password a particularly serious problem.

How to Reset Your Apple ID Password on the Web

If you've tried all the passwords you think might be correct and you
still can't log in, you need to reset your Apple ID password. Here's how
to do that using Apple's website (if you have two-factor authentication
set up on your Apple ID, skip these instructions and go to the next
section):

1. In your browser, go to iforgot.apple.com.
2. Enter your Apple ID username, then click Continue.
3. There are two ways to reset your password: using the recovery email
address you have on file in your account or answering your security
questions. Make your choice and click Continue.
4. If you chose to Get an email, check the email account shown on the
screen, then enter the verification code from the email and click
Continue. Now skip to step 7.
5. If you chose to Answer security questions, begin by entering your
birthday, then answer two of your security questions and click
   Continue.
6. Enter your new Apple ID password. The password must be 8 or more
characters, include upper and lowercase letters, and have at least
one number. The Strength indicator shows how secure the password you
   choose is.
7. When you're happy with your new password, click Reset Password to
   make the change.

Resetting Your Apple ID Password with Two-Factor Authentication

Resetting your Apple ID password requires more steps if you're using
two-factor authentication to provide an additional layer of security. In
that case:

1. Follow the first two steps in the instructions above.
2. Next confirm your trusted phone number. Enter the number and click
   Continue.
3. You'll get a screen that tells you to check your trusted devices.
4. On one of your trusted devices, a Reset Password pop-up window
   appears. Click or tap Allow.
5. Enter the device's passcode.
6. Then enter your new Apple ID password, enter it a second time for
verification and tap Next to change your password.

How to Reset Your Apple ID Password in iTunes on a Mac

If you use a Mac and prefer this approach, you can also reset your Apple
ID password via iTunes. Here's how:

1. Begin by launching iTunes on your computer.
2. Click the Account menu.
3. Click Sign In.
4. In the pop-up window, click Forgot Apple ID or Password? (it's a
small link just below the password field).
5. In the next pop-window, enter your Apple ID.
6. Another pop-up window will ask you to enter the password you use for
your computer user account. This is the password you use to log on
   to the computer.
7. Enter your new password, enter it a second time for verification,
   and then click Continue.
8. If you have dual-factor authentication enabled, you'll need to enter
   your trusted phone number.
9. Choose Use a trusted phone number or Use another device. Then follow
the steps above on your trusted device to reset your password.

Note: You can use this process in the iCloud System Preferences panel,
too. To do that, go to Apple menu > System Preferences > iCloud >
Account Details > Forgot Password?
However you chose to reset your password, with all the steps completed,
you should be able to log into your account again. Try logging in to the
iTunes Store or another Apple service with the new password to make sure
it works. If it doesn't, go through this process again and make sure you
keep track of your new password.

TapTapSee Creators Announce Next Generation of On-device Image Recognition; Detailed Descriptions in a Quarter

2019-05-30 Thread 'Marcio' via VIPhone
A new image recognition service from the Makers of TapTapSee may be
coming to your smartphone soon, but this one is a bit different.
The new @CloudSightAPI seeks to take on-device image recognition to the
next level, giving detailed descriptions within a quarter of a second.
Image descriptions are promised to be more vivid and detailed than other
products, with no cloud processing required.

Here are a few examples given on their website:

 * lot of multi-colored rotary phones
 * round black Michael Kors chronograph watch with brown leather strap
 * 3x3 Rubik's cube

To learn more, you can visit the CloudSight website
.

Receive Apple Support Help Right in the Messages App

2019-05-28 Thread 'Marcio' via VIPhone
Apple has recently added a new feature to their Apple Support App

enabling customers in the United States to receive expert assistance
directly from the messages app.
The new feature is only available for specific topics, though
unfortunately these are not listed, and only for customers in the United
States. However we can speculate that this advance could potentially be
a big help to blind/visually impaired individuals who can use a variety
of methods including VoiceOver and Siri to interact with their SMS
messages, potentially lowering the barrier to entry to get up and
running with a new iOS device.
If you try using this for accessibility support, let us know in the
comments whether you're able to get assistance and how well the process
works.

How to Turn Off iCloud on iPhone

2019-05-27 Thread 'Marcio' via VIPhone
While most people use the feature all the time, you may want to turn off
iCloud on your iPhone. Doing that is pretty simple, but turning off
iCloud can have far-reaching implications for how you use your iPhone.

What iCloud Does When Turned On

The basic functions of the iCloud are pretty well known to most people:
it's used to keep data in sync across all devices that are signed into
the same iCloud account. That means that if you add a contact, update
your calendar, or do any number of other things on your iPhone, that
change will be automatically applied to your other iPhones, iPads, Macs,
and other Apple devices.
But iCloud does a lot more than that, too. You can also use it to back
up data from your devices to the cloud, to use Find My iPhone to track
lost or stolen devices, to upload photos to your public Photo Stream,
and to share your Safari usernames and passwords across devices, among
other things. Signing into iCloud also signs you into other Apple
services and feature, like FaceTime, iMessage, Game Center, and Siri
Shortcuts, too.

Why You Might Want to Turn Off iCloud

Those all sound like pretty important features to use with your iPhone,
right? They are, but you still might want to turn them off. For
instance, you might not want to back up your iPhone data to iCloud or
share your photos with the world. You might also want to prevent data
from syncing from your iPhone to other devices. We don't recommend
turning off iCloud — it has too many useful features, most importantly
Find My iPhone — but there are good reasons to do it in some cases.

How to Turn Off iCloud on iPhone

So, now that you know what turning off iCloud involves, just follow
these steps to do it. These instructions apply to devices running iOS
10.3 or higher:

1. Tap the Settings app to open it.
2. Tap your name at the top of the Settings screen.
3. Scroll to the bottom of the screen. Tap Sign Out.
4. Enter your Apple ID when prompted and then tap Turn Off. This turns
off Find My iPhone, which you have to do before you turn off iCloud.
5. Next, choose what data you want to keep a copy of on this iPhone.
Move the slider to on/green for Calendars, Contacts, Keychain,
   Safari, and/or Stocks.
6. After this, tap Sign Out in the top right corner.
7. Tap Sign Out one more time and you'll finally be signed out of iCloud.

Tip: Remember, signing out of iCloud also signs you out of Find My
iPhone, FaceTime, and iMessage. You can turn on FaceTime and iMessage
individually, in those apps, and use a phone number with them instead of
your iCloud account. Find My iPhone requires iCloud be turned on.

How to Turn Off iCloud on iPhone on iOS 10.2 or Earlier

The steps for turning off iCloud in iOS 10.2 or earlier are a bit different:

1. Tap Settings.
2. Tap iCloud.
3. Tap Sign Out.
4. In the pop-up, tap Delete from My iPhone.
5. Choose the data you want to keep a copy of on your iPhone.
6. Enter your Apple ID when prompted.
7. Tap Turn Off to disable iCloud.

How to Turn off Individual iCloud Features on iPhone

What if you don't want to turn off all of iCloud, but just a few
features? You can do that, too, by following these steps:

1. Tap Settings.
2. On iOS 10.3 or higher, tap your name. On iOS 10.2 or lower, skip
   this step.
3. Tap iCloud.
4. On the screen that lists all of the iCloud features, disable the
ones you don't want to use by moving their sliders to off/white.
5. For some features, such as Photos, you'll need to tap the menus to
reveal another screen's worth of options. Move sliders there to
off/white to disable them as well.

How to Lock Apps On Any iPhone

2019-05-26 Thread 'Marcio' via VIPhone

Hi,
Daily, I get articles like this one I'll share below.
However, before I can do it, I'd like to know: Mark, can I post these
articles here? Will it help somehow?

Whether you want to protect your app settings or stop the kids from
seeing something they shouldn't, this guide explains how to lock apps on
any iPhone.

How to Lock First-Party Apps on iOS

iOS doesn't have a system-level feature that allows the locking of apps
individually so, at the moment, the number of apps you can individually
lock remains limited. However, there are a number of workarounds and
fixes you can use, and while some of these don't directly lock
individual apps, they produce much the same effect.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR IOS 12 AND ABOVE

1. Tap Settings.
2. Tap Screen Time
3. Select Content & Privacy Restrictions
4. Tap Allowed Apps.
5. Toggle all the green switches to OFF for apps you don't want to use.
6. Tap the Back button or swipe up to go to the Home screen.

INSTRUCTIONS FOR IOS 11 AND BELOW

One simple app lock method that works for all iPhones — but works only
with first-party Apple apps – involves the use of Restrictions. A
first-party app is an app that Apple creates (as opposed from another
software maker):
Go to Settings > General. Then scroll down and tap Restrictions > Enable
Restrictions.
Once prompted, enter a new Passcode and then enter again to confirm.
Note it down and store away if need be.
Having enabled restrictions and entered a new Passcode, you'll then be
presented with a variety of options. Firstly, under
the ALLOW subheading, you'll have the option of disallowing a range of
first-party apps, such as Safari, Siri, and FaceTime. This doesn't
include apps you've downloaded (see below), but by swiping the green
toggle icon to the off position, you'll be able to stop any disallowed
apps from appearing on your Home screen. In other words, this isn't an
app lock method so much as a temporary app removal method, since apps
you 'lock' in this way won't be accessible even to you until you
re-allow them.
By scrolling to the ALLOWED CONTENT subheading, you can also set
parental controls on the type of content/media someone can view on your
phone. In addition, you can use the PRIVACY subheading to prevent
changes from being made to your various privacy settings, and use
the ALLOW CHANGES subheading to freeze a range of miscellaneous options,
such as your Volume Limit.

 Set Time Limits for Apps

You can also set time limits for your apps, which is kind of like
locking apps away from your own use.

Go to Settings > Screen Time > App Limits > Add Limit.
Once you see the list of apps, you'll get to make a decision on which to
restrict access.
Tap the checkbox button to the left of the app category (like Social
Networking) you want to restrict.
Choose a time limit for use of that app category (eg, 1 hour). You can
also customize the days you want this restriction in place. Tap the Add
button to save the settings.

Password App Lock: How to Lock Apps on iPhone Using Guided Access

Guided Access is something of a 'nuclear' app lock option, in that it
effectively prevents you from leaving the app you're currently using.
Still, it could come in handy if your child wants to use a particular
app on your phone, but you're worried that she or he might venture
elsewhere.

1. Go to Settings on the iPhone Home screen
2. Tap General
3. Tap Accessibility
4. Scroll down and tap Guided Access
5. Swipe the Guided Access toggle button in the green On position
6. Tap Passcode Settings and then Set Guided Access Passcode.
7. Enter a new Passcode and then enter it again to confirm. You can
also enable Face ID on this screen.

Once you've enabled Guided Access and set your Passcode, you can then
use the feature by opening any app and pressing the Home button three
times once the app has started.

Note: iPhone X users will have to press the Side button three times.
Doing this will bring up the Guided Access start screen, which allows
you to draw a circle around the areas of the screen you wish to disable
(you can set it to cover the entire screen or none of it).
Alternatively, you can click the Options button in the bottom-right
corner of the screen, which can be used to disable everything from the
Volume Buttons to the touchscreen, and to set a time limit on the Guided
Access session (up to 24 hours).
And finally, if you own a Touch ID-enabled iPhone, you can use Touch ID
to end a Guided Access session, instead of a passcode. To enable this,
you need simply follow steps 1-5 above, but then at step 6, after
tapping Passcode Settings, you toggle Touch ID into the On position.

App Lock Fingerprint: How to Use Touch ID to Lock Compatible Apps
(on iPhone 5S to iPhone 8)

And speaking of Touch ID, it's possible to lock a limited number of
compatible apps using the fingerprint-based security feature (which is
available on the iPhone 5S through

Hi Marcio,

Here I will have to defer to others since I really never record stuff

other audio editors you will be able to set the format, e.g. MP3, WAV
etc. and the bitrate.

Hi, Any program which can record in MP3 format can do this. How
large the file is depends entirely on the quality, in the case of
MP3 this means the bitrate used.

This file uses only 64 Kbps which is half of the minimum I would
recommend for ripping music. I think FM Radio is about equal to 96
Kbps so while this may sound good for just a voice recording, it’s
still a pretty low quality recording in absolute terms.

You can calculate the file size of am MP3 file if you know the
bitrate and recording length as follows:

Time in seconds * Bitrate divided by 8 multiplied by 1,024

In the case of this recording the length is 28 minutes and 57
seconds which is 1,737 seconds

The bitrate used is 64 Kbps, the calculation is as follows:

1,737 * 64 = 111,168, divide by 8 = 13,896, divide that again by
1,024 (the number of bytes in a Megabyte) and you get 13.57 Nb

Windows reports the file size as 13,575 Kb which is 13,575 Mb so
the calculation is pretty close.

If they had used a sample rate of 128 Kbps the file size would be
double at 27.15 Mb

Sieghard

Indeed, quite interesting!
I've downloaded both files and will listen to it when I have the time.
One thing I noticed is that while these are 28 minutes or so
recordings, the file is really small compared to the time!

And, though this list is focused on phones, please let me just ask

Any help will be appreciated. If someone is willing to help and

    Siegard,
Wow, thanks for the class! I have no words to describe it! Congrats you
are the best!

Now, could you please tell me how can I choose the bitrate for a recording?
Mind you, I'm using Windows.
If you want, contact me off-list so we can talk about it without
cluttering up the list :)

Thanks a lot! :)

Hi, Any program which can record in MP3 format can do this. How large
the file is depends entirely on the quality, in the case of MP3 this
means the bitrate used.

This file uses only 64 Kbps which is half of the minimum I would
recommend for ripping music. I think FM Radio is about equal to 96
Kbps so while this may sound good for just a voice recording, it’s
still a pretty low quality recording in absolute terms.

You can calculate the file size of am MP3 file if you know the bitrate
and recording length as follows:

Time in seconds * Bitrate divided by 8 multiplied by 1,024

In the case of this recording the length is 28 minutes and 57 seconds
which is 1,737 seconds

The bitrate used is 64 Kbps, the calculation is as follows:

1,737 * 64 = 111,168, divide by 8 = 13,896, divide that again by 1,024
(the number of bytes in a Megabyte) and you get 13.57 Nb

Windows reports the file size as 13,575 Kb which is 13,575 Mb so the
calculation is pretty close.

And, though this list is focused on phones, please let me just ask it:
does anyone know about a good way to record with this good quality and

Simplehelp: How to Create a Playlist File (M3U) in macOS

Posted: 17 Apr 2019 04:30 AM PDT
This quick and easy to follow guide will show you how to create a playlist
file (.m3u) on your Mac - using software you already have installed!

Playlists can be super helpful. If you want to binge-watch a bunch of movies
or TV shows, loading up a playlist lets you "set it and forget it". Plus,
playlist files are readable by every possible modern media player - VLC,
iTunes, Quicktime - you name it. The best part is that they're super easy to
create and you don't need any special software. Just follow these easy steps
-

1.
Since a playlist file (.m3u) is actually just a text file with the name and
location of one file per line, all you need to create an .M3U is to use a
text editor. Open TextEdit from your Applications list and create a new
file. Make sure it's a "plain" text file by selecting Format -> Make Plain
Text (Note: if you don't see Make Plain Text as an option that's perfect -
your file is already formatted properly).

2.

Now open a Finder window and navigate to the first file you want to put in
your playlist. Drag and drop that file from Finder to your newly created
text file.

3.

The file will update with a line of text - the full path on your hard drive
to the media file.

4.

Now hit return on your keyboard (may be called enter) to move down to the
next line.

5.

Repeat step #2 - this time drag and drop several media files into your
playlist.

6.

Each file will have its own line of text - the path to the media file.

7.

You can mix audio and video files in a playlist, as long as the media player
you're opening the playlist in supports each file type. For example, the
media player VLC will play pretty much any media file that exists. iTunes,
on the other hand, doesn't natively play .mkv or .flac files. If your
playlist were to contain either of those file types, iTunes would display an
error and probably just move to the next file in the playlist.

8.

When you've added all the files you want to your playlist, select File ->
Save.

9.

Make sure to change the file extension from .txt to .m3u

10.

That's it - you've created your first playlist!

Susie, a word or two more about screen brightness vs. screen curtain
on/off.  The quickest, simplest way to change brightneess is, indeed,
with SIRI. You may also want to know that setting brightness to zero
saves battery power, while having brightness raised to 50% or 75% and
turning on your screen curtain does not save battery. The screen
curtain is a voice over feature whose purpose, I think, is to provide
privacy for the VO user who will not know if someone is looking over
her shoulder when using her phone in a public place.

Hi all.

On my iPhone 7S, I have my screen brightness set to zero, as I don’t
look at the screen at all. However, my sighted daughter sometimes
would like to use my phone, to take a picture or some such. Of course
my screen brightness setting makes her nuts. I have gone into
Settings and changed the brightness to 70 or 80%, but the next time
she looks at the phone, she says “the screen’s not working.”

What am I missing? I realize sighted people are Muggles, but
sometimes we need to share the phone with one. LOL

5 hidden iPhone features even power users probably don't know about, BGR

Remember when Android phones first started to get popular? People who chose
Android over iOS would constantly brag about how much more capable and
versatile their smartphones were compare to iPhones. And back in those days,
they were right. Apple's iPhone prioritized simplicity over versatility and
many features that had been available for years on other smartphone
platforms were omitted. Of course, plenty has changed since the early days.
The iOS platform has grown over the years into one of the most
feature-packed software platforms that has ever existed. In fact, there's so
much packed into modern versions of iOS that it's impossible to remember all
of the nifty features and functions that are available to users these days.

We regularly round up cool iOS features to share them with readers so that
they can get the most out of their iPhones and iPads. After all, there could
be great functionality hiding in there that will make your life easier, but
it's obviously useless if you don't even know it exists. This time around,
we've put together five wonderfully useful features that are buried so deep
in iOS, even power users probably don't know about them. We're not talking
about 3D Touching the keyboard to turn it into a trackpad here. No, we've
got some awesome features for you that are so well hidden, we guarantee even
the most hardcore Apple fans will learn something new before they leave.

Location-based DND
This first tip might be my favorite, and I have to be honest: I had no idea
this feature was available until I came across a post about it on Reddit.

Do Not Disturb is a wonderfully useful feature that silences any and all
unwanted notifications while you're sleeping at night. Sure it would be nice
if you could set different scheduled for weekdays and weekend days, but
that's neither here nor there. DND lets your phone continue to receive all
those emails, Facebook messages, and everything else that floods your phone,
but it remains silent so as not to disturb you.

There are a few nifty options to be found in the DND section of the iOS
Settings app, but there's one fantastic feature you'll only find if you look
elsewhere: location-based Do Not Disturb. Using this hidden feature, you can
silence notifications on your iPhone while in a certain location, and then
DND will automatically be disabled when you leave. How will your iPhone know
you've left? It uses the same GPS and cell-based positioning tech needed for
all of the iPhone's location-based features.

Next time you go to the movies, swipe down to open the Control Center on
your iPhone and then 3D Touch the DND icon that looks like a sliver of the
Moon (press firmly). You'll see the menu above pop up, and then you can just
tap on "Until I leave this location."

Rearrange apps more efficiently
Tap lightly and hold on any app icon, and your apps will begin to jiggle.
You can then drag them around as much as you want to rearrange them, your
hold one app above another to create a folder. Most iOS device users are
probably aware of this functionality, but you might not know that there are
a bunch of different things you can do to make your life easier while
rearranging apps.

As seen in the GIF above, you can grab multiple apps at once to move them as
a group to a new page, for example. Tap lightly and hold on one app, and
then continue to hold it while you tap with another finger on other apps.
You can also use another finger to swipe between home screen pages while
holding onto one or more apps.

Getting apps into folders can sometimes be a pain because the folder jumps
from side to side as you try to hover over it. Instead of doing it that way,
just tap any fold with another finger while you're holding onto one or more
apps. Presto, it's open!

Pump up the volume
This is another nifty feature I wasn't aware of until I found it on Reddit.

If you use your phone's stereo loudspeakers to listen to music and you find
that it doesn't quite get loud enough, there's a setting buried in your
iPhone that will crank the volume up to 11. Open the iOS Settings app and
scroll down to Music. Then tap on EQ, and select "Late Night."

App notifications in folders
Do you keep lots of your iPhone apps in folders? Do you get annoyed when
those apps get new notifications and you have to dig around through a folder
to figure out which apps have new notifications? Don't worry because there's
a much easier way. Simply 3D Touch (press firmly) on any folder that has a
new notification indicator and a menu will pop up listing all the apps
inside with unchecked notifications. Tap on any app in the list to launch it
without even opening the folder.

Do you like to fall asleep while listening to

WhatsApp may soon test sorting status updates by relevance on Android

2019-02-17 Thread 'Marcio' via VIPhone

WhatsApp
launched its story-based Status functionality
two years ago in an attempt to compete against the popularity of
temporary media-based “story” updates from Snapchat. While Snapchat
has since
bled out its Android users
through ignorance and incompetence, WhatsApp’s Status feature has
grown in popularity by riding on the sheer number of users on the
messaging platform.

However, users of WhatsApp will agree that the app’s status updates
function is not really what someone would call “useful”. If you have a
large number
of contacts on WhatsApp (who also have you in their own contact list),
you will see large lists of status updates. This list will contain
updates from
everyone — your family, friends, colleagues as well as every other
person that you rarely interact with now. People also frequently
pollute Status updates
by posting very, very frequently, thus appearing on top of the reverse
chronologically-sorted list, because reasons. While you can mute
status updates
from people you don’t really care about, WhatsApp figured they needed
to do more to retain a sense of relevancy to the Status update list.

Now, WhatsApp is reportedly testing an algorithm for Status that will
sort updates by relevance to the viewer, rather than simply listing
the poster with
the latest update on top (along with all of his unexpired updates).
According to Mashable,
the messaging platform is testing out this feature with a small subset
of iPhone users in Brazil, Spain and India; with plans to roll it out
broadly as
well as on Android in the future. This new algorithmic sorting will
order updates based on whose update is likely to be most relevant to
the viewer. This
will be determined through a variety of signals into accounts, such as
whose Statuses you frequently view and interact with, as well as who
you message
frequently.

Mashable claims that WhatsApp will retain the information it collects
to make these determinations on the user’s phones, and out of
WhatsApp’s servers.
Your preferences will be saved as a part of backups, however.

Algorithm based sorting changes have not been Facebook’s forte. The
social media platform has been criticized in almost every instance of
it trying to
change sorting preferences, whether it be on Facebook or Instagram. So
it remains to be seen how WhatsApp’s massive user base will react to
these upcoming
changes.

Hi,
Well I'm not that much into Apple stuff. I just have an iPod Touch.
Also I've really never heard about such AppleCare.
It may have another name on my country and as I'm not that Apple

However, from what I've heard on the lists I am on, when you call the
