Re: why voice over voices sounds fuzzy?
Hi, Actually, when I updated to 9.2 last week on my Iphone 5 I found the VO sspeech to be very fuzzy sounding as well. After messing around with the sound settings and the like I couldn't figure out why. However, I found that in VO settings after I switched to default voice the speech cleared up tremendously. I switched it back to the high grade voice and it went fuzzy again. I switched back to default and it is now clear and not fuzzy at all. It is almost like something has been transposed so that the voice settings are not quite what they should be. I hope this helps. Dan Beaver From: Tom Lange Sent: Tuesday, December 15, 2015 10:03 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: why voice over voices sounds fuzzy? Hi, It sounds like your Voiceover volume is too high. This is not to be confused with your phone's overall master volume that you control with the volume buttons on the side of your phone. Use your volume buttons on the side of the phone to turn the master volume all the way up. Then, to avoid distortion in Voiceover, go to the volume control in the rotor and reduce the volume to the level that you want, perhaps anywhere between 80 and 90 percent. As you do this, Voiceover should become less fuzzy or the distortion may disappear altogether. Finally, and this is important, go to Settings > Sounds and turn Change With Buttons to Off. Your ringer and alert sounds will remain exactly as you've set them and won't be affected when you use the side volume controls; the buttons will only affect Voiceover and/or music/video output volumes. Hope this helps. IOS 9.2 and IPhone 5
Hi, My experiences so far with 9.2 are less than expected. I have noticed that in some apps there is a very serious focus bug. For example, in the AppsGoneFree app it is impossible to swipe right to move through the days apps. As I swipe right I hear the first ap and then the focus jumps to the status line at the top of the screen. I have found that I actually have to page through the apps now instead of swiping. This is not always certain to work either. I have seen very severe focus issues in other apps I have too. I have also seen in some apps that the effort to double tap on some buttons and the like are useless. Nothing happens which is causing me a great deal of frustration and loss of function. Is there a way to go back to IOS 9.0 or maybe even 8.4? Thanks. Dan Beaver -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list. Re: battery
Hi, It sounds to me that you need to have your battery checked. Apple has a battery replacement program for many Iphone 5 units. I heard about it on this list and only about 3 months ago I started having similar issues. I checked my phone on their website for this program and it qualified for the replacement. I took it to the Apple store and they checked it and did do a replacement for free. No probloems since. If you do a google search for iphone and battery you will find the site where you can check for qualification on your phone. They will ask for your phone serial number and tell you immediately if it qualifies. You can find your serial number under settings and about on your phone. Re: Braille Input and messages
Hmmm, I am using it on an Iphone 5 and have had no problems like you describe at all. If you enter braille input mode and move a finger around the screen does it give you any tones or bleeps at all? Also, did you set the braill input type under voice over in accessibility settings? Dan beaver -- From: Chris Chaffin cchaf...@twcny.rr.com Sent: Thursday, July 16, 2015 9:30 AM To: VIPhone List viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Braille Input and messages When I go and try to use the ios braille input to type a text or iMessage, it does not work for me. It works fine everywhere else, but not there. This is not new, it has been going on since at least ios 8.2, and possibly earlier, I just do not remember earlier than that. I will also say that this is not phone specific. It used to do the same thing on my iPhone 5, and now it does it on my iphone 6, which I got in May. I am not sure what I am doing wrong, like I said, I use it everywhere else just fine. This is what I do. 1, Open messages. 2, Flick down to who I want to send a message too and double tap on their name. 3, Go down to the bottom of the screen and double tap the message edit box. 4, Switch the rotor to braille, and hold the phone in away mode. 5, When I try to type, nothing happens. I tried switching it to table top mode, then back to away mode, still nothing happens when I try to type. I have also tried to calibrate the dots, but still no response. 6, When I switch the rotor to something else and check the message box, there is of coarse nothing there. Is there anything else that I need to do before I start typing? Has anyone else experienced this problem? Any help or guidance would be appreciated. A person comes to your door, pushes the button and the bell dings or dongs or rings or whatever so you know somebody is at your door. Such devices traditionally were wired, but many wireless options are out there now which have a button that has a battery in it and it sends the signal to the bell/ringer wirelessly. Re: ENDING PHONECALLS
Actually it does work. I use it all the time. The trick to using the 2-finger double tap is to move the phone away from your head and wait several seconds before issuing the tap. I just did again about a week ago and received a generic reply yesterday that my concern will be forwarded to the appropriate people. This issue has been around since the very first release of iOS 8 Beta 1 back in June. People with developer accounts such as Jonathan Mosen, Anna, myself and many others have reported it well before iOS 8 was released and I'm sure others have reported it since the official release, but even after 4 official iOS 8 updates the problem persists and I'll go out on a limb here and say that in iOS 8.2 it still exists and Apple has already released the second beta for iOS 8.2. I wouldn't be surprised if the official release of iOS 8.2 was next week, if not I guess it will be in the first couple of weeks of January and the more people write to Apple accessibility about this the better are the chances it might get fixed between now and the official release of 8.2. Re: accessible app to determine horizontal level
Hi, Actually, I believe it only gives a left and right level. I assume you could turn the Iphone so that it is edge on to you so it would represent the level to you and away from you. I have never thought about this til now. I just tried laying my phone flat on a table and then lifting each of the 4 sides slightly and it does seem to give level readings on all side. I am unsure how to interpret this but maybe you can figure it out. Re: Braille Input: What Helped me Figure it out
Hi, I haven't seen the manual or anything yet and do not have IOS 8 yet but I have one question about the braille input keyboard. Is it possible to tell the phone to always use braille in any edit field? Or, do we always have to switch it to braille each time we move to an edit field? thanks. Dan Beaver From: Sandy Finley Sent: Thursday, September 25, 2014 8:01 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Braille Input: What Helped me Figure it out Nicki and others, I don’t know if this will help you but here is a set of steps I have learned from others that helped me with the braille input. 1.When you land in an edit field turn your rotor once to the right. The Braille keyboard is usually there because the Braille setting on your rotor follows the edit field around. 2. I find it useful to use away mode. For some reason, when in table mode, dots 1, 2, 3 appear on the right so everything is backwards. 3. Once in a way mode, Do not calibrate just write. Unfortunately, when trying to use contracted Braille the app does not echo characters. I like to have characters echoed at this point so I write in unconstructed Braille. 4. Flick once left to erase a character and once right for space. 5. 6. When done rotor once left or right, then you can use VO gestures again. Re: Battery Drainage
Hi, If you can't use the phone during the day at work wy not just turn it off(power it off) for the time it is in the locker? Why leave it sitting there doing nothing? Another thing you can do is make sure bluetooth and WIFI are turned off as well if you still want to leave it powered on. These tend to drain battery charge very rapidly. At least on my phone they do. I hope this is of some help. Dan Beaver From: Joe Sent: Wednesday, February 05, 2014 6:56 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Battery Drainage Hi, ever since I upgraded to iOS 7 on my iPhone 4S, my battery has been draining at a crazy rate. During the work week, for example, I'm not allowed to have the phone in my workspace, and so I leave the phone on Airplane Mode in a locker. Yet, at the end of the day my battery has dropped from 100% to 75%. I've turned off indexing, background refresh, and GPS where necessary. I have no push notifications. I have the bear minimal running, and yet my phone guzzles like an Irish. Any ideas? I would blame it on battery age, but I only began experiencing the issue with iOS 7. Re: 4 finger single tap bug?
Hi Sieghard, I tried your suggestion and yes I admit it does work. I am certain I tried that one and it gave me the last email on the screen instead of the last email in the list. I am glad your magic worked and it works the way I need now. (smieley face) thanks. Dan Beaver -- From: Sieghard Weitzel siegh...@live.ca Sent: Sunday, September 22, 2013 3:42 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: 4 finger single tap bug? Hi Dan, Swiping from the Compose button left twice to get to the last email does in fact work just fine, I tried it since I mostly avoid claiming something works if I haven't actually tested it. In this example of getting to the last email the answer is yes, you could just touch the bottom of the screen where you will land either the Compose button or the Last updated message instead of doing a 4-finger tap and then swipe right once or twice depending on where you touched. I do this a lot in various apps. Now, there are, however, situations where this does not work. For example, you might have an I Agree button at the bottom of a 10 page disclaimer on a web page or when you install an app and quite often the only way to get quickly to the bottom and often right onto the button is to use the 4-finger tap. Re: accessible mobile hot spot
Hi, I have used the Sprint hotspot. It works well and is setup using a webpage that is imbedded in the device. It seems accessible in most aspects. I am now using Verizon's hotspot. It too is setup via a imbedded webpage. It seems to be accessible just like the Sprint device. I like both except that the Sprint hotspot had a repeating problem with the battery. Sprint refused to admit that they had a design issue. I got tired of buying battery after battery. My wife and I have used both hotspots while traveling and in areas where the cell signal is sufficient it is great accessing the internet while driving down the highways. Dan Beaver -- From: Raul A. Gallegos r...@raulgallegos.com Sent: Tuesday, July 09, 2013 6:17 PM To: ViPhone List viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: accessible mobile hot spot Hello all. A client of mine isn't interested in getting an iPhone for her traveling needs because she already has an iPod Touch. However she is interested in getting the added GPS unit for it, and then a mobile hot spot in order to do some traveling. So, my question to you all is, which ones have you tried in the U.S. meaning, between Sprint, Verizon, ATT, or T-mobile, or some other one which I'm not thinking of, which ones might be relatively easy for a blind person to set up. I've not had the need for one, and so don't know how easy they would be to set up. Thanks much. -- Raul A. trying to find info about using the IPhone5
Hi, I have gone through the IPhone user guide and the accessibility guide. I can't find info on how to do things like copying and pasting from app to app or selecting text etc. Where is this found? Re: dew point apps
Hi, I realized that Netatmo did all of that but I was just trying to give those of us unable to purchase such a device a means of doing more with our own weather info. I sure wish I could afford a Netatmo. It sounds very nice. thanks. However, I did want to point out that the Netatmo Weather Station provides a lot of information about your indoor and outdoor conditions which you can't get with an app without hardware. Temperature, humidity, CO2 level, air pressure etc. are all examples of values which can only be measured and not calculated. Re: More good news about the Netatmo Weather Station
Hi, Until he responds you could do a search on the net for dew point formula. I did and there is a lot of info out there. It appears that you could plug in the temp and relative humidity and get a close approximation. I hope this helps. Dan Beaver From: Paul Parravano Sent: Friday, June 28, 2013 9:38 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: More good news about the Netatmo Weather Station Thank you Sieghard for this thorough report. It appears from your description that the dew point is not provided. Is this true? I find that in hot weather, this measure is the most reliable in determining real unpleasantness. If this measure is not given, might you suggest how we could convince the developer to include it? Thanks again, Paul From: viphone@googlegroups.com [mailto:viphone@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Friday, June 28, 2013 09:29 To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: More good news about the Netatmo Weather Station Hello, I just wanted to give a quick update about the Netatmo Weather Station for those who bought it and for those who might be interested in it. First of all, for new members and those who haven't heard about it, the Netatmo Weather Station consists of 2 modules, an indoor and an outdoor module. The indoor module has a micro USB connection and uses a wall adapter for power and it also has 4 Triple A batteries for backup power. It is a round tube about 6 inches long and maybe 2 inches thick, there is no display at all and it only has one touch sensitive button at the top which one can push to force an update or you can push and hold it to initiate pairing mode. The indoor module connects to your WiFi and via your WiFi to the internet so that you can access it from anywhere in the world where you have a data connection. It also has Bluetooth which until recently was not used, but now the station uses Bluetooth for the initial setup/connection to your WiFi. This process was inaccessible so far, but I am happy to report that it is now fully accessible via the free Netatmo app which you also use once the station is paired to check the weather data provided by the station. The outdoor module uses 900 Mhz and is pre-paired with the indoor module and it also uses 4 Triple A batteries. Once you put batteries in it, it will automatically pair itself with the indoor module and nothing else has to be done. It is also a tube of the exact same thickness, but it's only maybe 4 inches long. Both modules are made from aluminum and have that same quality feel as an Apple product such as the Apple Wireless Keyboard. The weather station provides the following information (you can of course set if you want metric or imperial units): Indoor Measurements: Current Temperature Minimum and maximum temperatures in the last 24-hour period Humidity CO2 level in parts per million Air quality indicator - indicates if air is good or if CO2 is high and room needs to be aired Noise level in decibels Air Pressure - this is displayed with the indoor measurements, but air pressure is the same indoors and outdoors. Outdoor Measurements Current Temperature Minimum and maximum temperatures in the last 24-hour period Felt Like Temperature Humidity Air quality indicator - uses government data from the nearest weather station The app can also send push notifications about a bunch of events such as high CO2 level, low temperature, high temperature etc. Another new feature is that you can now buy additional indoor units for $79, the initial cost for the Weather Station is $180). They are similar in size to the outdoor module and you can place them in different rooms, e.g. you could have one upstairs and one in the basement. Later this year a rainfall sensor will also be available which will measure the amount of precipitation. Netatmo was incredibly accommodating to improve the accessibility of the app which in the beginning was not that great. There is still a graphical mode which automatically activates if you turn the phone to landscape orientation and that of course won't read, but in portrait mode Voiceover reads all the information beautifully in a simple interface. The head developer made it possible for me to discuss the various versions I beta tested with him directly on Skype and it was a fantastic experience. I know that the price for this Weather Station is on the high side and it's not a product for everybody, but if you are willing to pay this amount you will definitely get the most accessible weather observation product out there. Lastly, here are the links to the Netatmo website where you can buy the station (I believe you can also get it on Amazon) and to the Netatmo app on iTunes, it won't do you much good without a weather station, but I thought I include it anyways in case somebody wants to read the entire app description: Netatmo Website: http
most accessible news feed app?
Hi, I have been getting my news feed via the internet under windows. However, I'd like to move all that to my IPhone. Does anyone have experience with news feed apps? How accessible are they and which has proven to be the most accessible? I'd prefer free apps but will consider paid ones too if they are really good Thanks.
