Printing messages

2021-05-13 Thread Donald L. Roberts
I sometimes wish to print incoming text messages or email messages on my
HP wireless printer.  Please tell me step by step how to do this. I
understand how to forward messages but just cannot get the hang of
printing them.

My iPhone S E 20 is running IOS 14.5.

Thanks.

Dictation question

2021-05-12 Thread Donald L. Roberts
I plan to attempt to use Siri to dictate a rather lengthy email message
which will necessitate intermittent pauses so I can organize my thoughts
for each sentence. Just what is the exact procedure for starting,
pausing and resuming dictation?

Thanks.

Text message question

2021-05-12 Thread Donald L. Roberts
I sometimes need to send text messages exceeding the 140 character limit
to non-IOS recipients. Send using SMS is enabled. Assuming such messages
exceed the character limit, will my S E 20 break this message into
smaller segments and send them so that the entire message will be
received and not just the first 140 characters.

Thanks.

Tiles versus tags

tags can be traced and located outside the user's immediate area;
otherwise, just what are the defining characteristics of air tags as

However, there are a few situations in which I need to send an email

Just how do I do this?

2021-04-05 Thread Donald L. Roberts

My iPHone S E 2 is running IOS 14.4.1.

I called Verizon tech support and was offered the option of a text chat.
I would be sent a link to begin the process.

So the text message containing the link came in right away. But when I
viewed the message, I couldn't figure out how to get to the link and
click on it. Please tell me how to do this. Also, I think I recall that
text chats do not work well with screen readers. Specifically, are such
chats easy using Voice Over?

Thanks.

Question re: Tribit sound max pro

2021-04-05 Thread Donald L. Roberts
First, sincere thanks to those who recommended this speaker prior to
Christmas. I got it for Christmas and think it is truly a great speaker
for the price. It generates a great sound and more than adequate volume
for its size.

Now for the question: As you view the speaker from the front, the left
most switch is power: the second, scan for blue tooth signal; but what
is the third button used for? The fourth is volume down, the fifth,
volume up, and the sixth switches to auxiliary input mode. But please
tell me what the third button from the left is used for.

Thanks.

a printing question

2021-03-04 Thread Donald L. Roberts
I recently bought a wireless printer, specifically an HP Envy 7640 all
in one. A sighted friend helped me set it up to print from my windows 10
PC.  Now I also would like to be able to print from my iPHone S E 2020.
I am assuming I need to install an app of some sort, but my friend
alleges that I can just hit the print button on the iPHone which will
then find the HP printer and begin to print.

I hate to plead ignorance, but it's my only defense.  Please straighten
me out. Thanks.

Separating one or more messages from a thread

2021-03-04 Thread Donald L. Roberts
The problem outlined below is merely a lack of knowledge on my part, not
a problem with the iPhone or with the operating system which is IOS 14.4

Some of my family members exchange group conversations.  What is the
best way to isolate individual messages from the conversation for later
saving or printing?

Speaking of printing, how do I locate the print button?  I believe I saw
elsewhere that somewhere there is a share button which ultimately leads
to the print button.

Thanks in advance for feedback.

Now that Envision America is discontinuing production of its barcode

the  various O C R programs does the best job of identifying barcodes.
Frankly, it has been my experience that half of the battle is just
locating the darn things.

Where is that setting

it called something other than braille?

Seeking information about shortcuts

2020-11-30 Thread Donald L. Roberts

Thanks to those who have responded to my inquiry.

What I hope to do is to set up a shortcut which would allow me to give
Siri a specific command which would connect me to Be My Eyes, and a
different phrase which would connect me to Aira.  It doesn't matter to
me whether it is a command for Siri or perhaps a command to tap on the
back of the S E 2.
, the idea being anything which would require as little interaction with
the iPhone as possible.

Request instructions using IOS feature whose name I can't recall

2020-10-20 Thread Donald L. Roberts
Apologies for the vague subject line.  My S E 2020 is running IOS 13.7.
I know of an IOS feature which allows the user to write text and then
invoke it with a very brief command.  So I guess you could call it a
template.

Whenever I request Lyft or Uber, GPS takes the driver to a Safeway
parking lot behind my house.  So I need to create a brief instructive
text to send the driver in order to easily find my house.  Please tell
me what this feature is called and specifically how to use it.

Thanks much.

Request description of a problem and solution if any

2020-10-05 Thread Donald L. Roberts
Sorry for the somewhat vague subject line.  I tend to update IOS
versions only after the update bugs and issues have been well discussed
and evaluated.

After IOS 14 was released, there was some discussion of what was called
excessive voiceover chattering.  Would someone please describe this more
in detail, its likely cause, and what if anything can be done to either
minimize it or eliminate it completely.  Frankly, until I learn more
about this, I'll stick with 13.7.

Thanks.

A problem with my 6

2019-08-26 Thread Donald L. Roberts

Hopefully I get quick answers to this question as I am leaving town shortly.

The problem is that the incoming volume on a call is extremely low
although the speaker volume is more than adequate.  The other party can
hear me fine both when I am listening on the ear piece or listening on
speaker phone.  However, I have difficulty hearing the other party when
I listen on the ear piece.

Are there any suggestions for resolving this issue?

Thanks.

Keith, We bought a Shark iRobot 851 for Christmas and have been quite
pleased with how easy it is to use. There are only three buttons on the
unit, clean, deep clean, and return to the docking station.

The iPhone app isn't much to shout about, but the vac itself works fine

2019-05-14 Thread Donald L. Roberts
An acquaintance who is not on any IOS lists just acquired a previously
owned iPhone 7, capacity not known.  I know of course that the 7 can run
IOS 12; however, I am looking for a book recommendation (preferably from
National Braille Press) which will give as much info as possible about
the 7.

Thanks for suggestions.

iPad questions

2019-05-08 Thread Donald L. Roberts
I have an iPad 2 which I have neglected for a long time. In fact, I have
forgotten much of what I used to know about it.  This iPad is running
IOS 9.3.5, so I wonder if any of the currently available books could
shed some light on its use. If so, which books would you recommend?
Also, is there any braille input app which might run on that old of an
operating system?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Question re camera funtionality

2019-05-07 Thread Donald L. Roberts
I use my iPhone 6 primarily for GPS, Be My Eyes, Face time calls and
Kindle books. Although the 6 meets my needs very well, I would be
tempted to upgrade if I thought there would be significant improvement
in OCR functionality when using apps such as Seeing A I and Voice Dream
scanner. I get good results with these programs already but am seeking
your thoughts as to whether a newer phone would appreciably improve things.

Thanks for any responses.

Moribund iPhone 6 no longer on life support

2018-09-12 Thread Donald L. Roberts
Thanks to help from Sieghard, my iPhone 6 is no longer at death's door
and is much improved except for one remaining problem. Siri will
absolutely not respond to any commands regardless of the fact that all
Siri settings are turned on. I am unable to initiate phone calls or text
messages by voice; nor can I ask for the MLB scores or ask for the local
forecast.

Ideas please!

my iPhone 6 is moribund

2018-09-12 Thread Donald L. Roberts
My primary purpose in writing this post is to inquire whether it is
possible for Apple to remotely check the status of my iPhone 6 which is
running IOS 11.4.1.

No one is around to check the screen, and I can't unlock the phone
since there is no audible feedback. Will try later today by connecting
to iTunes.

Symptoms are as follows: Voiceover does not speak even though I asked
Siri to turn it on. When I press the home button, I feel the vibration
but hear no ding. I cannot make outgoing phone calls; however, if I call
my iPhone, I hear the chime and voiceover announces the name of the
caller which is in my contact list. So I know it is not a volume issue.
The phone continues to ring even though I use a two finger double tap on
the screen. Is the speech toggle a three finger double tap?

Thanks for feedback.

Re: I.D. Mate bar code reader instead of iOS barcode app?

2018-05-13 Thread Donald L. Roberts
Cristobal, We have had an I D mate Omni for more than six years and really
enjoy using it. The database is updated twice per year and is quite
comprehensive.

Admittedly, we haven’t played that much with Seeing A I, however, it has been
our experience that it is far easier to locate the bar code with the Omni than
with the Seeing A I barcode channel.  The issue for us is not recognition;
rather, it is locating the barcode.

Questions re TP Link smart plug

2018-05-04 Thread Donald L. Roberts
I just acquired a TP Link smart plug which can be controlled by the iPhone via
an app called Kasa.

I had no difficulty downloading or installing the Kasa app on my iPhone 6
running ios 11.3.1. Additionally, the app sees and controlls the smart plug
very well, specifically it manually turns it on or off when I wish.

I’m showing my ignorance from here on because I thought, perhaps incorrectly,
that the app also had provisions for turning the smart plug on or off at user
designated times. But in looking through the options on the Kasa app, I thus
far have found no means of doing this. Emails sent to Kasa support have
bounced. So if any list member is using this app, I would very much appreciate
some pointers so as to control my smart plug setting on and off times of my
choosing.

Re: iPhone 6 battery question

2018-04-07 Thread Donald L. Roberts
Chris, I know that this sounds almost unbelievable; however, my 6 was back
in my hand in less than 48 hours from the time I took it into Fed X.
Furthermore, I was supplied with a tracking number, an email when the phone was
received, another when it was out for shipping, and a third when it was out for
delivery. I have never gotten such prompt and thorough service previously.

Perhaps I should mention that I do not know to where my 6 was shipped for
service. I had initially called Apple Care and was emailed an RMA number and
told to take just the phone and that RMA number to Fed X who did the rest
including the boxing of the phone for shipment.

Although I agree that making a big fuss about this is pointless, the entire

And the fact you can change skin tone and that there are dozens of emojis
representing today's lifestyles showing families with two fathers, two
mothers, men kissing men and women kissingt women is not representing our
so-called modern society? Your friend thinks it looks like a 50's person,
maybe somebody else doesn't.
I personally see emojis as what they are, fun little things you can put in a
message, they are not photo-quality images and making such a fuss makes
little sense to me. But then of course it obviously makes a lot of sense to
you which shows how differently we all perceives these things. Nobody stops
you in seeking the support of a million people and petition this to be
changed, but I'm not so sure there is a lot of point to continueing the
discussion on this particular list. I guess Mark can say it's totally OK in
which case I just press delete when I see the subject from now on.

My sighted friend said the figures are cartoon like rather than an image
that represents an actual person. He said they have a 1950’s look to them.
Rob, humanity changes and today’s images should represent the people of
today. For example, almost no one had tattoos
50 years ago. Now, more than half of adults under 35 in the United States
and Europe have either a tattoo or have died their hair a color that is not
natural to humans. Similarly, people are bigger now than in the past, Male
recruits to the U.S. military weighed on average 160 lbs. in 1960. Now, they
weigh 200.

Re: Getting iPhone battery replaced

2018-02-13 Thread Donald L. Roberts
Hi Ed, I live in Northern California. My nearest Apple Store is located in
Roseville which is perhaps 15 miles from Sacramento. So I called the
Roseville store. However, this is not necessarily where my phone was shipped
for service. Essentially, Roseville Apple sent me what is tantamount to an
RMA number which I subsequently presented along with the iPhone at my local
UPS store. UPS boxed up and shipped the phone to an address unknown to me.
I subsequently received emails from Apple apprising me that they received
the iPhone and later that they had shipped it back to me. I must confess
that I was amazed at the efficiency of the whole operation.

I got the battery replaced on my iPhone 6 last week. The process was
wonderful. I had the phone with the new battery in my hands less than 48
hours after I took it to the UPS store. The nearest Apple store is
approximately 85 miles from my residence, so taking it to the Apple store
wasn't feasible. The thing I also want to mention is that the shipping
charge wound up being only $3.90 each way. I paid it up front when I paid
for the battery replacement.

Hi Kathy,

I've heard that the wait time is long. I would go into Background App
Refresh settings and turn off any apps that you don't want to work in the
background. Also, go to location Services and turn off apps that don't need
to know your location. Make sure the ones that do only use it when you're
using the app, except weather apps. Check Battery settings to see if any
apps are using a lot of battery, and if so, remove them from the app
switcher when you're done using them. You could also use low power mode at
least some of the time.

I hope these suggestions help.

Best,
Anna

Wemo -- information needed

Battery calibration

2017-12-18 Thread Donald L. Roberts
A couple of weeks ago, someone (possibly Kliph) posted instructions for
calibrating the battery in an iPhone. My 6 is running IOS 11.2.1, and I
now notice precipitous drops in battery percentage.  I can't say just
when this started, but I do recall that I was running an earlier
incarnation of IOS 11.  I would certainly appreciate a repost of those
instructions if someone retained that message.

Thanks in advance.

Questions re the type 9 app.

2017-12-09 Thread Donald L. Roberts
A few weeks ago, mention was made of an app called Type 9, which allowed
the user to write text messages by tapping the numbers 1 through 9 to
emulate the alphabet and numeric keys. I checked the app store and
located the app but was uncertain as to whether the $3.95 price was to
be paid immediately or was an in-app purchase.

Also, in looking at the description of the app, it mentioned that there
were two ways of using this app, but I didn't understand using the one
handed mode.

I really need to learn to use this thing if it works well because Siri
seems to be getting progressively flakier on my iPhone 6 as well as when
I am in a noisy environment. So I would really appreciate hearing from
users of this app.  Thanks in advance.

For some inexplicable reason, I am no longer able to read U.S. currency on my
iPhone 6 which is running IOS 10.3.3. I don't know the correct name of the
program, but it is currently called the Nant money reader. I haven't yet
checked the app store to see if there is an update, and the version I am using

have checked the camera and also the permission settings, and all seems to be
in order.

My primary purpose in writing is to inquire as to whether others have

Thanks.

Money reader problem

2017-09-20 Thread Donald L. Roberts
For some inexplicable reason, I am no longer able to read U.S. currency
on my iPhone 6 which is running IOS 10.3.3. I don't know the correct
name of the program, but it is currently called the Nant money reader.
I haven't yet checked the app store to see if there is an update, and
the version I am using was installed well before the name of the money
reader was changed to Nant. I have checked the camera and also the
permission settings, and all seems to be in order.

My primary purpose in writing is to inquire as to whether others have
experienced similar problems with this program, and what if any is the
solution.

Thanks.

Emailing photos from my camera roll

2017-08-06 Thread Donald L. Roberts
I have several photos in my camera roll which I need to email. If I
have a choice, I would rather dump them into my Dropbox and then email
with my windows 10 computer. If this is possible, please tell me how to
do it as I have done almost nothing with photos in the past. I did make
sure that any pictures I do not wish to send have been deleted.

If I must attach the photos to an email message rather than dumping them
into Dropbox, please tell me step by step how to do so. I have sent
emails from my iPhone 6 running IOS 10.3.3; just didn't have to mess
with photos. And if I didn't ask previously, which is easier, sending
directly from the iPhone, or dumping initially into Dropbox.

Thanks.

Re: PureFlix

2017-07-22 Thread Donald L. Roberts
I have a related question. Regarding the various streaming services,
i.e. netflix, hulu etc., it really frustrates me that I have found no
way to actually search the content unless I actually sign up for an
account. Has any list member done a serious a-b comparison of these
services trying to determine which has the widest variety of content. If
so, I would certainly like to know your findings.

I tend to like older classic movies. But when I had a trial of Hulu, I
found very little in the way of classic movies. Lots and lots of
relatively current stuff, but few classic movies.

state of my budget, I may have to cut some of that too.
And I have Cable, only because it provides channels with older programming

But I do realize if I lived elsewhere, and had a really great indoor antenna
I could get those on OTA tv but I live on a property with a wall of trees

Text message problem

2017-05-06 Thread Donald L. Roberts
My iPhone 6 is running IOS 10.3.1. I am certain that what I am about to
describe is a lack of knowledge on my part rather than a problem either
with IOS or with my phone.

I have a couple of friends who sometimes send me three or four text
messages in quick succession. When these messages come in, I can see
via voice over that there are more than one, and I can determine
specifically how many messages there are.

The problem occurs when I go into messages and attempt to read each.
After reading the first one, when I swipe down to delete that message,
the entire group is deleted. I want to read one, delete it, and then
read the next, etc. In some cases, I may wish to read and retain one or
more and delete the rest. Just what am I missing?

Thanks.

2017-04-08 Thread Donald L. Roberts

I thought that the app being discussed was Looktel Recognizer. But when
I went to read its online description, I got the impression that its
primary function was to identify objects from information stored in a

Becky, I had a similar problem on my iPhone 6 after having used the

My conclusion may be in error, but the bottom line is that I got it to

App switcher question

2017-02-24 Thread Donald L. Roberts
I have an old 3 GS which I use as an internet radio. I can't recall
what to do after I get into the app switcher to close out some running
applications. I should have checked before writing this, but I think it
is running IOS 8 something. At any rate, if any remembers how to close
an app in the app switcher for older versions of IOS, please respond.

Thanks in advance.

Looking for a timer which can function either as an elapsed timer or a
count down timer. The thing which I may not find is a timer which can
announce the elapsed time at user defined intervals. For example, I
would appreciate a timer which would verbalize the elapsed time every
15 seconds or perhaps every 30 seconds. Ideas please!

a different perspective

2016-12-19 Thread Donald L. Roberts
The below message is being sent not to inflame the operating system wars
but rather to share the observations of a satisfied Android user. I for
one am a happy user of an iPhone 6 running IOS 10.2. So here are the
opinions of a happy Android user specifically of a Samsung Galaxy S6,
namely Dane Trethowan from the PC Audio list.

Firstly I’d like to wish everyone on list a Very Merry Christmas and may
you all have a Happy new year in 2017 I find myself in a somewhat
reflective mood around about this time of year when it comes to Android.
It was a year ago on 24 December - Yep Christmas Eve - when I received
my Samsung Galaxy S6 which I’m still using and a year before that - 1
December 2014 - I received the lovely Samsung Note4 which is still in
use today. The Galaxy S6 has opened doors to me I could never have
imagined and taken my using of a mobile phone in a somewhat different
direction than I had anticipated and I’d like to share my thoughts on
this topic, perhaps other people may have comments or views they could
contribute. The Galaxy S6 - as with other Android phones - is exactly
that, a great phone for making and receiving calls whether you’re using
some sort of voice recognition/dictation to initiate/answer the call,
whether its by physical button presses or swiping the screen/placement
of the phone. Given that the whole idea of a phone is to do just that -
make and receive calls - The Galaxy S6 is certainly up to the job and
sounds excellent with HD voice whether you’re using its own internal
earpiece, hands free speakerphone, headset or another quality Bluetooth
hands free device, I’ve tried them all and have been suitably impressed.
I’m now finding that the S6 has turned into a primary media player for
me and I put this down to a number of factors. First is the Lossless
APTX Bluetooth transfer that the S6 and other Android phones now use,
this can make your music come alive on a good portable Bluetooth Speaker
or a home stereo setup equipped with APTX Bluetooth. Added to that is
the ability to stream files of your choice, you want to play FLAC files?
Then go right ahead, install your favourite player such as VLC, pair
your APTX Bluetooth device and sit back to enjoy the music. I’ve also
used the Galaxy S6 with an external DAC - Digital To Analogue Converter
- in the form of the Oppo portable pocket DAC, you haven’t heard your
music until you’ve heard it through a good DAC and the DAC in the S6
thankfully isn’t too far behind the Oppo, even supports HD Audio. The
Samsung Galaxy S6 goes with me everywhere and is constantly in use,
whether it be giving directions thanks to Google Maps or just sitting in
my trouser pocket in case of an emergency, I have the SOS function set
up here which can send information to four nominated parties in the form
of SMS, these SMS messages include such information as a 5 second audio
recording, shots taken from the camera at the time of the SOS alert, map
locations etc. I have the Galaxy S6 set to alert me by vibration when my
doorbell rings, the S6 can recognise the sound of the bell, you record a
sample of the sound for the S6 to recognise. Amongst the everyday Apps I
use is the very nice Aqua Mail eMail client which has one of the best
layouts I’ve ever seen in a eMail client whether that be Desktop or
mobile. I have a Twitter feed and thus use Tweetings though I have to
admit to not using Tweetings to its full potential. Tunein Radio Pro is
a buzz and even more so now that I have the voice command structure for
it down to a T using “Okay Google”. But probably most important of all
is just how well my S6 interacts with my hearing instruments when I’m
out and about, when a call comes in I just press the home button on the
S6, the call is answered and the sound immediately transmitted right to
my hearing instruments so I may hear clearly. Further more - if I’m out
at a coffee shop where there’s a lot of noise - I can make things easier
for myself by placing the S6 on a table between myself and the party or
party’s I’m talking to. The s6 runs an App for my hearing instruments -
actually the App controls most of the processing for the instruments but
that’s another topic for another day - but the point here being is that
the App adjust the microphone of the s6 allowing me to hear the local
conversation more clearly than the hearing instruments would on their
own. Happy Android usage to you all.

Once the call connects the keypad disappears.

She is not a good iPhoneuser yet and by the time she fines and enables

What is the name of that app?

2016-10-28 Thread Donald L. Roberts
Within the past two weeks on one of these lists, someone mentioned an
IOS app which blocked receipt of phone calls and texts from persons and
numbers not in your contacts. At the time I thought that the poster
called the app as call dnd+, but when I look in the app store, I find no
such app and nothing remotely resembling the name. Incidentally, for
those with punctuation turned off, there is a plus sign after the
letters dnd.

Can anyone provide the exact name for this app?

Thanks.

Fwd: edit field problem in 10.1

Date: Wed, 26 Oct 2016 16:27:50 -0700
From: Donald L. Roberts <donald.robert...@gmail.com>
To: viphone@googlegroups.com

I upgraded my iPhone 6 from IOS 10.0 to 10.1 and got the message that
the software installation was successful. However, when asked to enter
my password, the letters were not present. This was also true when I
was asked for a pass code. I selected the 4 digit pass code, but no
keyboard was present. Also, although I was told that quick nav was off,
quick nav came on immediately when I moved my finger around the
keyboard. Just so there is no misunderstanding, I am talking about the
keyboard on the phone, not a blue tooth keyboard.

I subsequently opened messages with the intent of creating and sending a
text message. The result was the same. This was also true when I
opened the uber app and attempted to enter a destination.

I then rebooted the iPhone 6, but the problem was still present. I have
never encountered such a problem previously. Suggestions please!

sending everything it hears to Amazon’s or Google’s servers where this
raw data is mined for certain information. I’d be especially worried
with the Google Home device since information is Google’s business. I
guess in a way one can say this about any smartphone, but the
microphones on these devices are so much better and are made to pick

are part of the “internet of things” getting hacked and even if Google
and Amazon set boundaries and behave themselves, I’m sure if some
hacker got control of it they would use whatever they might harvest to
their greatest gain and, most likely, this would be to the greatest
harm of the user. Does Alexa or Google Home even have any sort of
security? I shudder of the thought how many of these things are
connected to WiFi passwords where the router’s password is “password”
or whatever else the default might be. I’ll hang tough on these things
until maybe Apple releases something equivalent which hopefully has
better security as per the article Mary posted about how Home Kit
devices are apparently a step above of most other things out there. In
the meantime I just spent a bunch of money on a very fancy dovetail
jig for my woodworking shop, it’s made of cast aluminum and steel,
there isn’t a cable on it and the only way to hack it would be if
somebody took an axe to it **smile**. It won’t tell me the time, what
the weather Is like and it won’t read a book to me, but it will give
me endless hours of joy when I make drawers, boxes and chests with
fancy dovetail joints and it also won’t be replaced with a better
model next year or, for that matter in 5 or 10 years; sometimes we do
need to get our priorities straight.

Re: Questions regarding Uber

2016-10-24 Thread Donald L. Roberts
I have a related question. When I initially set up my card info, I
remember seeing a place for my photo. Now I can't seem to locate where
to upload it in the IOS app. Please tell me if it is somewhere in the
account settings.

Thanks.

Yes, you enter your card info when setting up the account. Personally,
I find it easier to do things like this on the PC, but you can do
everything on the app itself if you wish. Some blind folks find it
advantageous to upload their photo to the app. I do not know if the
driver has access to that photo or not. You can set up favorite
locations for home and work. Once you request the ride and are
assigned a driver, you can communicate with the driver via text or
phone call.

*Subject:* Questions regarding Uber
Hello everybody,

As my subject says, I have some questions regarding Uber. I already
have the app on my iPhone 5s. I'm a little confused as to how it works.
Do I put in my card information, when I set the app up? Also, what
other information might be needed? I have a friend who uses this app,
and they have told me that when they request a trip, they can add
information to their request.
How does that work? Any help, suggestions, thoughts, or chips, it will
be very much appreciated. I've never used anything like this before.
So it is a new experience for me.

Thank you,

questions re the Alexa app

2016-10-11 Thread Donald L. Roberts
I bought the Amazon Echo a couple of months ago and really enjoy it. I
did, however, have to install the Alexa app on my iPhone 6 in order to
get the Echo activated.

Unfortunately, the size of the app keeps growing because all of the
various Echo commands I have used are saved in that app. Surely there
is some way to delete the past usage history. Please tell me how it is
done. I realize I could call Amazon tech support, but if possible, I
would rather hear how it is done from someone familiar with
accessibility considerations.

Thanks.

Several basic Ipad questions

2016-07-18 Thread Donald L. Roberts
I have had several incarnations of the I Phone starting with a 3GS and
now currently a 6. I just acquired an Ipad air, second generation and
am enjoying it immensely although there are obviously some things I need
to re-learn.

Question 1. Where is the rear facing camera on the Ipad?

Question 2. Where is the microphone on the Ipad air 2?

Question 3. Although I do not plan to remove it, where is the sim slot
on the Ipad and what type of sim does it take?

Yes, this Ipad definitely has a cim slot according to its previous owner.

Last but not least:

Question 4. This is embarrasingly stupid. But I need to inquire
because I haven't changed it for so long on my I Phones. Just where do
I find the setting to increase the voiceover speech rate?

Thanks so very much for any responses.

Anyway...

I tested reading my Aa & AAA batteries with the KNFB & camfind apps.
Both apps were able to identify the brand name of the battery, battery
size & warning info. It was a bit harder to get the info from the AAA
battery because the battery is small. I would assume that you could
use Be My Eyes or even Facetime to obtain the info from the batteries
being that you will have sighted assistance. The writing on AA & AAA
batteries is parallel to the seam. The brand name & size is located
slightly away from the overlapping seam. Being that cell batteries are
a metallic silver color (shiney) & the size is etched into the battery
it may be harder for an app to identify.

Donna I'm not sure

Although the below message is only marginally related to IOS, I am
posting it here as I got no response whatsoever when I posted it to a
general tech list.

I hope that I can verbalize these questions in a way which makes
sense. .
Recently several loose (unpackaged) batteries, Double and triple A,
got mixed together. Some are regular alkaline and some are
rechargeable and hybrid rechargeables. I wish to separate these into
appropriate groups by using something like Bespecular, Be My Eyes, or
possibly the KNFB reader for IOS.
First of all, I am wondering whether the camera in my I Phone 6 can
accomplish this with something as small and curved as a triple A
battery. Second, does the relevant info on the battery go with the
curvature of the battery, or is it written parallel to the seam? I
would assume it would be parallel to the seam, but we all know what
happens when one assumes. Also, is the information to be read likely
to be near the seam?
Last question for today. Although I do not have any button batteries
whose numbers I need to know, but would my i phone 6 camera be able
to identify the numbers on a button battery?

Thanks.

Freepop -- seeking information

2016-06-03 Thread Donald L. Roberts
My iPhone 6 is doing fine on Verizon, but I wanted a free or very low
cost backup phone service exclusively for phone calls and text messages.

I keep getting promotional announcements from Freepop. In the past, I
had ignored these because I thought that Freepop ran exclusively on the
Sprint network which I think is a variant of CDMA. But now Freepop is
offering a low cost sim and states it will run on most GSM phones, so
they must have purchased space on either A T and T or on T Mobile.

I guess what I want to know is whether their free service is truly
free. If not, what are the gotchas? I have an old Nokia N82 which I
intend to use for this backup phone service. this is for backup, not my
primary phone service.

Feedback is much appreciated.

Question re updating apps

2016-05-26 Thread Donald L. Roberts
Ever since getting my first IOS device, I have discarded many of the
apps which I downloaded and found not to meet my needs. Nevertheless,
if discarded apps are still available, I find a longer and longer list
to ignore. Is there some way by which I can tell IOS not to show me an
app any more in the update tab?

Group text messaging

2016-05-26 Thread Donald L. Roberts
I sometimes need to send the same text message simultaneously to several
family members. Typically, after opening messages and selecting each
recipient from contacts, I type the message and then click send. Is
there some mechanism whereby I can set up a group message rather than
having to select each recipient individually? Incidentally, the IOS
version is 9.3.2.

Thanks.

Re: Find my iPhone and find my friends

2016-05-18 Thread Donald L. Roberts

I guess I should have been more specific.

Some of my family members also have iPhones. Is it possible using only
voice over to track my family members on my iPhone? We have used this
in situations where other family members were tracking me. Now, if
possible, I want to reverse the process.

Contacts question -- second request

As I received no response when I posted this on Monday, I thought I

I do not have an air print printer but would like if possible to make a

my contacts list so it can be printed? I realize of course that I can
backup to iCloud, but I also want a hard copy.

Thanks for ideas.

There should have been a way not to enter a passcode during set up. If you
double tap on "passcode options" button, there is an option to "don't add a
passcode". Then you double tap continue to confirm you really don't want to add
a passcode.

In order to change anything in the pass codes area, You need to enter the
passcode, and then change settings. It's a security measure to stop somebody
changing the passcode on you and locking you out of your phone.

Re: Apple music, pandora, or spotify, which is better in terms of accessibility

2016-03-03 Thread Donald L. Roberts
Would someone please tell me which of the three services mentioned has the most
comprehensive list of non-contemporary, non-rock, and non-classical recordings.
I happen to enjoy vintage jazz, also what we used to call standards (now
called nostalgia by some) and pre-rock hit music. Obviously my choices will
be more limited than the contemporary things. So I hope some listers will
address this question.

Ditto here. The iOS apps for all three of these services are
accessible. Each is distinct and different from the other and has a
different pricepoint.

Re: Be My Eyes

2015-11-18 Thread Donald L. Roberts

Hello Cara and other interested listers,

I use Be My Eyes two or three times per week. In fact, Be My Eyes is
the primary reason that I upgraded from a 4S to an iPhone 6. The camera
has made a big difference. My access was blocked several weeks ago
after I had a connection with a volunteer where I could hear her, but
she could neither see me nor hear me. So the volunteer apparently
thought it was a crank call and had some means of putting me on a
blocked list. Fortunately, I emailed the support team and got things
resolved, after which things have been working very well.

One other issue is that sometimes a volunteer's ability to speak English
is a bit marginal, and communication can at times be difficult.
However, for the most part, I have had good communications with the
volunteers.

Re: vonage

2015-10-26 Thread Donald L. Roberts
Maria, I am not Joseph but wanted to respond to your inquiry. My other
iPHone is a 4S which I have been using on Page plus for a couple of
years. Page Plus runs on the Verizon network. Come to think of it, you
are in Australia, so that last statement is not relevant for you.

At any rate, I use Vonage on that phone whenever I have a wi fi signal
available, and it works very well. Remember of course that if you are
using Vonage, you cannot dictate the name of a contact or phone number
to be called, but you can double tap the names in your contact list to
be called. Call quality is adequate, and I have not experienced dropped
calls with Vonage.

Frankly, I really like it because Vonage has few limitations. If I
remember correctly, no one call may last more than 90 minutes, and I
believe they give you something like 2000 calls per month. I'll defer
to others who know more about the specifics of Vonage usage.

Sirius xm app question

2015-10-06 Thread Donald L. Roberts
Is there any way using the latest Sirius Xm app and IOS 9.02 to enter a
channel number directly?

I like to listen to "Escape," which is channel 69 on the XM receiver.
When I listen to that channel on my iPhone, i use the Radium app and
search for the word "escape." However, for some reason, word searching
for escape on the Radium app no longer yields the correct channel. So I
called Sirius Xm support and found that the channel number I want is
751. But I need to find a way to enter that number directly into the
Sirius IOS app. Thus the question, can this be done?

Thanks for ideas.
