Using siri on the mac

2022-04-11 Thread Ian Harrison
Hi all,
just getting to grips with the above.

When I ask Siri something all I get back is Alex saying notifications. I assume
the answer from siri is in the notification, but how can I get it to start
reading the response immediately?

With thanks as always
Ian

Voice Over typing feedback in Safari based survey

2021-08-12 Thread Ian Harrison
Hi all,
recently I tried to complete an online survey, about accessibility would you
believe, and came across a problem when trying to respond a text entry box. I
got the usual text edit prompt but it was followed by something like ‘object
replacement’. When I attempt to type there is no longer any letter or word
feedback and I have no idea if it is accepting my typing.

I tried various ways of interacting further and tried it with quicknave both on
or off.

Is this a bug or is there a workaround?

Thanks as always

Mecbook air replacement magsafe charger

2021-07-24 Thread Ian Harrison
Hi everyone,
My 2014 magsafe charger is fraying at the tip. I don’t want to pay £79 from the
apple store but also don’t trust Amazon reviews. Has anyone out there got a
cheaper version that they have been happy with for a while? One I have seen is
by a company called Nodara.

Re: Forwarded Email: Alexa and finding previous In Touch Radio 4 programs

2021-06-06 Thread Ian Harrison
Hi Pat,
Apple’s podcast app is part of the standard set up on your iphone. I am
assuming suddenly that you have an iphone or a Mac? Perhaps I should have asked.

If you do, you open it up ; find the search tab; double tap; enter In Touch
into the search box and double tap on the search button at the bottom right of
the screen; go into the list of results and double tap on the bbc in touch
result. Explore the page and find the subscribe button. There is also a see all
previous episodes button somewhere on the page; if you double tap that you can
scroll back through all older episodes.

Hi,

I have a different option as I don’t know the Alexa method. I listen to In
Touch through the Apple Podcast app, which can play a large number of older
episodes. The podcasts are probably an edited version of the broadcast.

Update on turning touchpad off and on on the fly

2021-05-25 Thread Ian Harrison
Hi listers,
apologies if someone has already posted this.

A lister previously advised to use a connected mouse to turn off the touchpad
so I woldn’t accidentally use the pad to change focus. I’ve now found a way to
do this on the fly without the need for a mouse or external touchpad. I can now
turn the pad back on when I have finished so my sighted friends can use it as
intended.

Do the following:
Go to Apple preferences in Big Sur
click on Accessibility
Click on pointers in the table of options
Click on other pointer tab
Put a tick in the enable mouse keys box
Go into the mouse options pop up and tick turn off touchpad when mouse keys
enabled
Click OK

Now you can toggle the touchpad on and off with 5 quick presses of the option
key on the keyboard

Cheers
Ian

Turning touchpad on and off on Macbook Air M1

Getting the new Macbook air with silicon

2020-12-07 Thread Ian Harrison
Hi all,
I’m lucky enough to be getting this for Christmas. It will arrive with Big Sur
installed and my old system was backed up to time machine with High Sierra. I
have some questions please:

•If I set up my new machine from a time machine backup can I just transfer all
my personal data and not downgrade back to High Sierra?

•Will this data transfer include all data such as email folders, apps installed
and such like?

•Will it include information such as email accounts and logins, Safari saved
passwords and autofill data?

I really could do without having to set up from scratch again.

With thanks in advance as always.

Ian

Voiceover on mac and Microsoft Teams

2020-09-24 Thread Ian Harrison
Hi All,

My University is now using Teams for most learning. I was lead to believe it
was accessible for Mac users, but I am not finding this to be the case. Sighted
help tells me that Microsoft’s own guidance does not do what it says it should
do; even using the key control modifier instead of the correct ‘command’.

Am I being stupid here or what?

Kind regards
Ian

Safari chat unable to enter text

2020-09-23 Thread Ian Harrison
Hi listers,

When in a chat element on a particular web page, voiceover tells me I am in a
text entry area and then says edit message. This would normally mean I could
start typing and get voiceover feedback as I type. However, voiceover is silent
when I hit keys and the edit box does not appear to be accepting what I type.

I vaguely remember this as a problem some years ago but can’t remember the work
around if there is one.

Any help?
Thanks
Ian

voice over problems just appeared

2020-06-09 Thread Ian Harrison
Dear all,
I am having problems with a couple of apps responding when using voice over
that were not happening last week. I am in the UK and my Nationwide bank app
and fantasy premier league app are now very flaky when trying to click on links
or buttons. Is anyone else having this issue or something similar.

I have done the usual hard resets, deleting and redownloading steps. It may
have started after updating to 13.5 but not sure. I have updated to 13.5.1 but
the problem still exists.

I have contacted Nationwide and Apple but just get the usual finger pointing
response. If anyone else can replicate the problem it would help me decide how
to attack the problem further.

Thanks
Ian

New SE slight concern

2020-05-23 Thread Ian Harrison
Hi all,

Very happy with my new SE, but have one slight concern. I use the two finger
double tap to pause and resume audio in various apps and it is much slower to
respond than with my 6S. So much so that I sometimes do it again thinking I did
the tap badly. It then catches up and reverses the original action.

Anyone else having this slow response?

Thanks in advance

Voice over speed

2020-05-12 Thread Ian Harrison
Hi again,
I am now using Catalina. I used to be able to adjust the voice over speed on
the fly using the arrow keys and modifiers. I can’t seem to find that any more.
Any suggestions? I have looked at the rotor in Web settings but speech rate is
not in there. I’m sure it used to be.
Thanks

OT advice on trading in old units in apple store

2020-05-12 Thread Ian Harrison
Hi all,

I am thinking of trading in my old iphone and Macbook with Apple in order to
buy new ones. One thing I can’t find out is how it works while we can’t go to
the stores. Could it all be done remotely? If I buy the new items, how long do
I get to return the trade in items and do they send all the necessary
packaging? How do they ensure the condition is right for the value they offer?

I have tried to find this out but frustrated in my wanderings around the store
terms and conditions.

With thanks
Ian

Scanning solution

2020-05-12 Thread Ian Harrison
Hi listers,

I need to get a scanner for photos and A4 documents. Wireless would be nice but
not if expensive. The main project is a load of photos my wife has but doesn’t
have the time to scan them herself. Therefore it is my job to do the tedious
task and it would be nice to have simple software that could detect the edges
of the photos automatically and prefereably be voice over accessible. Any
suggestions?

Thanks

Sharing secure data with family

2020-05-06 Thread Ian Harrison
Hi all listers,

I am looking for the most accessible solution to sharing important data with my
family, and only my family. Which app would you recommend?

I want to share bank account details, logins and text information such as where
to find stuff in an emergency, so it can’t just be a password manager. Also it
would be nice if each family member had their own vault, so to speak.

Suggestions gratefully received

Catalina mail app too verbose

2020-04-30 Thread Ian Harrison
Hi all,
having upgraded to Catalina I now find that voiceover reads out every detail of
email headings in the mailbox. That is the from, subject, date and time and
mailbox. I used to be able just to scroll down by subject or date without
hearing the rest. Is there any way around this extra noise?

Thanks in advance

File recovery

2020-04-27 Thread Ian Harrison
Hi all,
I need to recover files from an external hard drive that won’t mount any more.
Do you have any suggestions for one with Catalina in mind.

There is one called Disk Drill that gets good ratings on the appstore, but the
developer says it is not really voice over accessible.

with thanks
Ian

OCR PDFS on Mac or iphone

2020-04-25 Thread Ian Harrison
Hi listers,

Just upgraded to Catalina and I’ve lost my accessible Fine Reader software. Can
you recommend something for either the Mac or iphone that will extract text to
plain text or MS Word that is voice over friendly and doesn’t cost the earth.

I will be doing it a lot due to needing it for my degree.

Many thanks in advance
Ian

Creating a web site

2020-04-08 Thread Ian Harrison
Hi everyone, hope you are staying safe.

In this time of great boredom I would like to create a web site for my family.
A simple one with no ecommerce etc.

Has anyone got experience with a provider who is voice over friendly? I am
reasonable tec savvy but not a coder or html person. Square space looks good
but I can’t find a way to contact them about such a specific question.

Thanks in advance
Ian

Dear listers,

this resource has been mentioned on a list. I have looked at it and it has a
lot of AD recordings. it requires account setup to download the file. My
question is whether anyone has used this without facing problems with phishing

Thanks

Face time auto answer

Is there any way to enable auto answer on an ipad for face time or some other

I have a relative who has dimentia as well as sight issues who can’t get the

Thanks for the responses. Unfortunately the american printing house one was
last updated in 2009 and is out of stock. There seems to be a niche here for an
educational app developer.

Re: unable to shuffle an apple playlist on alexa

2020-01-13 Thread Ian Harrison
Her eis my experience with Alexa and apple music.

I ask alexa to play one of my playlists. Giving them unusual names seems to
help. Once the playlist starts I say Alexa,, shuffle. I no longer say shuffle
playlist as this seems to confuse things.

Also I found that when shuffled it will replay the playlist in exactly the same
shuffled order. With some research I found out that Apple does not shuffle each
time . Once shuffled it will play that shuffle every time. If you go into apple
music on your apple device, open music and a playlist and then press the
shuffle button it will then reshuffle the order again. A faff of course.

It would be nice if there was a way to get a playlist to play unplayed tracks
first in every shuffle to avoid this. Could not find a way to set this up.

Cheers

Loadstone GPS

2020-01-12 Thread Ian Harrison
Dear All,
I am thinking of paying for the Loadstone in the UK. I want an app I can rely
on and get used to. I have tried many of the free options and they seem quite
complex to use, especially when out on the street.

What is your experience and is it good enough to use in the UK?

With thanks in advance

Re: hearing numbers punched, when listening to prompts.

Hi,
I think this is a general problem. If you have earphones I find that the
numbers spoken by voice over are more distinct for some reason. I can’t
guarantee or explain why this is so, but it usually works for me.

Re: Sonos now has the Google Assistant

2019-07-17 Thread Ian Harrison
Hi,
I have also tried this out.
I agree it is a bit of a timewaster having to switch between the two, but the
Sonos controller app makes it relatively straightforward.

One downside I haven’t cured is that Alexa can control some of my TV functions
such as on/off and volume, through my sound beam, but I can’t find a way to do
that with google. A shame as it is miles ahead in terms of general information
compared with the more clunky skills of Alexa.

imho

OT Alexa, apple music and sonos

2019-04-25 Thread Ian Harrison
Dear All,

I heard a rumour that connecting my apple music subscription to Alexa only
works on the Echo units and will not work with Sonos units so enabled.

Can anyone clear this up?

With thanks as always.
Ian

Re: Netflix questions

2018-10-26 Thread Ian Harrison
Hi All, here is my experience from the UK:

Accessing the list of AD films is different on the iphone to the Apple TV. On
the iphone it feels like it is at the bottom of a vertical category list, while
in the apple TV it is at the end of a horizontal list. Clicking on the category
brings up over 700 currently described shows.

These lists change over time with some being withdrawn.

Sometimes older films are brought in. Jaws and the Back to the Future trilogy
are currently available.

Annoyingly, sometimes AD will be missing even if listed. This has happened
especially in TV series, such as Gotham. The first three series had AD. Series
4 was listed as having it, but AD only appeared around episode 15. This is very
frustrating.

What I do is go through the whole list every now and again, adding ones that
look good to the My List category for future reference.

Hope this helps. Netflix is still the best experience out there in my humble
opinion.

Re: Accessibility of Tp-Link smart switches and plugs

2018-10-18 Thread Ian Harrison
Hi, that sounds like a good deal. I forgot to add that the best sort to
get are those that don’t need yet another hub to plug into a router. This is
what puts me off buying into the philips hue system. My eyes would respond well
to slight changes in lighting and an easy way to manage this would be great.

Cheers from UK

Re: Accessibility of Tp-Link smart switches and plugs

2018-10-11 Thread Ian Harrison
Hi, I have been using the app and Alexa for a while now. I use it for lamp
switches, not the wall switches that are also available. The system works well
once set up.

The Kassa app is ok if I remember rightly. You don’t really need it at all once
you are set up properly as it all works through Alexa. I vaguely remember that
initial set up of the plugs and pairing with wifi was a bit tricky. I used
sighted help with this as I had to know which lights were flashing on the
units. The Kassa app is fairly accessible but again it was a lot more efficient
to get sighted help for creating groups.

If you can have some working eyes around for the set up I thoroughly recommend
them. Amazon often has a deal on the smart plugs, but I don’t know about the
wall switch side of things.

Cheers

Re: Netflix no longer reads synopsis of

2018-10-01 Thread Ian Harrison
I know this is an old question, but I thought I would announce this workaround.

When a programme is highlighted in netflix, hold down the apple remote’s
play/pause button for a couple of seconds and voice over will read out the
synopsis or screen contents.

The play/pause is the round one at the bottom left of the remote.

Good luck

Re: Glasses

2018-05-24 Thread Ian Harrison
Hi. IMHO I think the pricing reflects the current scale of the operation. It is
a bit like how expensive mobile phone minutes or internet used to be until
numbers increased. However a product for the blind is not such a mass market -
only 285 million of us across the world at the last count.

Even so, it would be a mistake if they could not eventually produce a more
affordable option. The barriers to entry for products such as KNFB and Senderro
are proof of this. It is a risky business when someone like Microsoft can
suddenly come up with Seeing AI, pretty much undercutting KNFB and many other
stand alone apps.

I am in the UK, so canot currently try Aira out. I would love to see how it
impacted on my life. If it was marginal I would simply stop buying minutes. I
would hope they would go to rollover minutes but that would seriously affect
their cash flow at this time of development and growth.

Out of curiosity, what plans are people who have these glasses have? I
personally can't justify the price for none of the plans. I would be
prohibiting to use them on my job due to sensitive material I have or in
contact with. Also the money spent for the glasses and plans could be used
to pay bills, save for a vacation or so many items. I respect there are a
lot who like this application but it is but not for me. If those who have
these glasses go shopping with them, how long does it take you to go
shopping? Is it faster then asking for assistance or using the on line
services offered by a lot of chains? Thanks for any responses.

Re: Questions re TP Link smart plug

2018-05-24 Thread Ian Harrison
Hi, my experience with the TP link and its Kasa app is pretty good.
However, I was unable to set specific schedules in the app withvoiceover; my
sighted wife had to do it. I have written to the Kasa developer and reported
this as an issue. If everyone would do this then it is possible the Alexa app
and other skills could become less clunky to use.

Hi. In the UK I can simply ask Alexa to play any radio station that has
an internet stream. As long as you know the exact name of the station no extra

Hi,
not sure if you mean on windows only. The only reliable daisy reading app I
have found is for IOS. It is called Voice Dream Reader and I import my RNIB
daisy audio books into it. They work great. The app is not cheap, but it can
read just about any format you can throw at it.

How much vfeed back does it give you like something like google maps to

Re: Two Apple TV Related Questions

Hi, Can’t help with direct tv, but I think once you get to the “one of four”
point in voices you need to click on the touch screen to get into the list of
choices. A bit like having to interract with an object slider.

Hope this is right and solves it.

Re: Offline maps?

2018-04-25 Thread Ian Harrison
Nearby Explorer is not fully functional in the UK as yet. I contacted them two
weeks ago and they say they are building a UK version. When it comes out I will
probably buy it as it looks like it does what I want.

I have got the Nearby Explorer Online version, which shows what it will be
capable of, but currently does not do turn by turn instructions or link to
public transport etc.

In the US it downloads all maps to your phone, so you need a fair bit of free
space, but it does mean you use less power and data when out and about.

Re: Favorite Tech Podcasts

2018-04-17 Thread Ian Harrison
Hi all. I tend to agree that listening through the app on my phone is better
and more reliable. However, I have had some success asking Alexa to ask Anypod
to play a named podcast. The trouble with Alexa is having to remember the name
of the skill as well as the name of the podcast. I hope that the Echo gets
smarter by eliminating skill names as I like the rest of what it does. I use it
to play my audible books and it works great.

Maps usage guidance

2018-04-03 Thread Ian Harrison
Dear listers,

I have decided to become a bit more independent in walking around. I am a
pretty experienced voice over user but struggle to set up journeys for turn by
turn guidance in both Apple maps and Google..

I have listened to many in depth podcasts but cannot seem to find one or two
that cover the skills needed to accomplish a good experience with these apps.
Can anyone point me to a masterclass?

On a connected note, I have read all the recent discussions on various support
apps such as nearby explorer, blind square, soundscape. Is there a definitive
answer to the best combination of turn by turn walking and public transport
with spacial awareness as you go along? Again a complex series of podcasts on
this would be a major achievement. I am too inexperienced and nervous to try
and do a podcast experiment myself.

Thanks for your thoughts.
Ian

Re: Google Assistant with voiceover?

2018-03-17 Thread Ian Harrison
Hi all,
do you know if you can get the assistant on your phone to work the same as the
stand alone device? That is not to have to tap the microphone or at least have
google read the results back to you rather than have to scroll down the answers
and have voice over read them?

Thanks

Re: Soundscape

2018-03-13 Thread Ian Harrison
I am also trying this out in the UK. I completely agree that we should be able
to set current location as a user defined point of interest, so that a beacon
can be used later - for example finding one’s way home. As for the overall
product I think it is imaginative and empathetic as a work in progress. I found
that if one overshoots the beacon one is heading for the sound does come from
behind me. I have not yet tested the accuracy, but hope to do so soon. It is,
of course an enormous battery hog; no surprise there.
