Re: VizWiz

2014-01-22 Thread Kellie and my lab pack
I had stopped using viz wiz a long while back, well over a year for the reason
of no question being recorded. I was using my 4S a the latest version and
wasn’t having any luck. Once I received my 5S I thought I would try it again.
apparently, it did record but I didn’t get a response until a day later. for
me, it just isn’t useful. I use camfind to identify things now.

  Hello,

Somebody asked recently whether VizWiz was still working. I used it
yesterday for the first time on my iPhone 5S to see if I could get a reply
about what the LED display of my digital thermostat for my in-floor heating
system said.

First of all I took the picture, then as usual I tapped Record and asked
my question. However, when I tapped to send the picture, the app said that no
question had been recorded. I did allow the app to use the microphone and tried
a few more times both with Apple Earpods plugged in and without using the
iPhone’s built-in microphone and it appears that it doesn’t want to record the
question. Has anybody else experienced this?

Anyhow, I sent the image to webworkers anyways assuming they might get
what I want.

Now it gets interesting. I sent the picture a few minutes before 11 AM
and then did something else for a minute or 2 waiting for a reply. When none
came I used Tap Tap See and within about 20 seconds received a result which
said “Thermostat 26 Degrees” which is exactly what I wanted.

I forgot about VizWiz until about 4:30 PM (5 and a half hours after I
sent the picture) at which time I received 2 push notifications from VizWiz,
here is the text:

!--[if !supportLists]--1. !--[endif]--Where is the question, it
is good looking switch

  !--[if !supportLists]--2. !--[endif]--Thermostat 26 degrees
Celsius

So, VizWiz apparently still does work, but even if answers came after 10
minutes instead of 5.5 hours the service is pretty useless in many instances
where you probably want an answer immediately which means at least within a
minute or so.

Of course there is still the issue that at least on my 5S VizWiz also
doesn’t seem to record the question. Let’s hope Tap Tap See comes up with a way
to ask a question, I think even asking a question you have to type into a text
field would be good and probably even better since a recording takes up a lot
more space hence it takes longer to transmit the picture with a recording and
one can always use SIRI to dictate a short question which is probably just as
good.

  Sieghard

Re: Movie reading web site

2014-01-04 Thread Kellie and my lab pack
The only thing I am surprised about is that there have been no additions to
this app at all since it’s release.
I am sure that at least some have made an effort to have their voice heard but
nothing is new. I downloaded it out of curiosity, but rarely get to the movies
so haven’t really had the opportunity to try it out. I check to see if anything
new has been added though and still the same movie. I hope that as word gets
out, movies will be added more frequently as right now it doesn’t seem very
useful.

When I read this, I don't see them saying we have to do the work for them or

don't see this as any different then any other campaign where you're asked to

Hi Denise,

If that is the case you might want to just delete the Skype app and
redownload it because I have no problem whatsoever. If I sign out of my
account I have 3 buttons:

Sign in with a Skype Name
Sign in with a Microsoft Account
Create a new account

I have merged my Skype Name with my Microsoft account which is my
Outlook.com email address so I use the Sign in with a Microsoft Account
option. Once I double tap on that I have a field for my user Id which is my
Outlook.com email address and the password and everything behaves normally
as far as having the virtual keyboard and typing.

My experience with bard this weekend had been that I was able to read books
which were already downloaded to my device. However, I could not download any
books from the website through the app nor was I able to access my wish list,

sure whether the entire website was down or only the mobile portion.

Of course, it happened on the weekend so we would have to wait until the work
week began before they can work on fixing it. I haven’t tried yet today but
hope it will be up soon so that I can get books for my plane trip in a few

Re: tap tapt see

2013-11-23 Thread Kellie and my lab pack
To a degree I understand that you may have to retake pictures. It just sort of
goes with being a blind picture taker. *smile* but, it is also possible that
the individual who is examining the picture is not conveying the correct
information.

I have had a spice bottle, and I knew I had the phone pointing at the correct
location. I did not move the phone, nor did I move the bottle and yet I got 2
completely different responses when I took the pictures. The first told me that
it was a red and white spice bottle on a brown table. Information that I did
not need. The next picture told me that it was oregano which I did need. It
both instances I waited for the sound to indicate when it was ready for me to
snap a photo. I know that it isn’t possible that I shifted the phone because I
have the phone resting on it’s side on the table. for me, this is the best way
to get a good picture of the bottle.

I have used TapTapSee quite often and have become proficient at taking good
pictures which are identified. I bring this up only to illustrate that it isn’t
always the blind picture takers fault as to why a picture is not properly
identified. I understand completely why they have to charge for the service. I
still feel that there should be a short edit box or something to allow me, as
the user, to convey the information that I need. a blind user may still have to
take a couple pictures to receive the correct information. However, it is also
possible to cut down on the number of pictures because the sighted person on
the other end knows what information is being sought. I think this is a
reasonable request. Until that happens, I am using camFind with great success.
I used it today in fact to verify that the box I had was the maple flavoring
which I needed for my recipe.

Re: When will Apple take this seriously?

2013-11-12 Thread Kellie and my lab pack
Neither my husband or myself had had any challenges in ending a phone call.
For us, the hang up gesture works the same as always. The same goes for
double tapping to enter into dictation. You will want to make sure that you
are in the edit field so that editing is enabled. If not, maybe that is why
some people are getting music to play instead of dictation? Not sure but
trying to think of reasons why some would be encountering this difficulty.

Hi,

I’m not sure about this. In IOS 7, it is certainly harder to hang up a call
with a 2 finger double tap on the first try. It seems to have gotten better
in the minor releases but, enough people who have been using IOS for years
have experienced the same behavior to not just write it off as 100% user
error. And overall, the 2 finger double tap has at times produced some
unexpected results. For example, I do a 2 finger double tap to start
dictation and my audible book starts playing. Or music. Now there is no
way this can be user error. lol.

It is not Apple's fault or responsibility when we do not perform the

Consider it this way. I cannot get Windows to copy a file. No matter how

I would appreciate tips on successfully using talking goggles as well. I have
heard of others success but haven’t achieved it myself. I tried both the video

Hi David,

Here is just one example using Talking Goggles in Still Camera mode and then
using Tap Tap See.

I took the pictures in the complete dark, no lights other than my Flash on the
iPhone 5S and I was doing the same picture holding the iPhone approx. in the
same position for both shots

The object was a 4 Litre pack of Jackson-Triggs Cabernet Sauvignon red wine
which I just bought where Jackson-Triggs is the name of the winery in the
Okanagan Valley of southern British Columbia and Cabermet Sauvignon is a
variety of grape which produces red wine.

When I took the picture with Talking goggles it red a bunch of information,
some of it was spelled, but it included “Jackson Triggs Cabernet Sauvignon”.

When I took the picture with Tap Tap See all it said was “Jackson-Triggs”.

What is more, the result from Talking Goggles came back after about 2 seconds,
the result from Tap Tap See took about 8 or 10 seconds. In reality it appeared
as if Talking goggles started reading information basically immediately after I
took the picture. Tap Tap See appeared to take a long time compared to Talking
Goggles.

I also used Talking Goggles recently in video mode when I was at home and on
WiFi to go over about 8 or 10 pages of various documents including cards as in
plastic cards similar to credit cards as well as my Canadian citizenship
certificate, my HSA Open Water Scuba certificate, my University graduation
certificate etc.

Tap Tap See produced almost nothing for most of these whereas Talking Goggles
in video mode identified enough words of any of the documentsv for me to know
what they were.

Sieghard

Well, that depends on what you require, and how you prefer to pay your costs.

VizWiz will do the same as TapTapSee, and it even has the means for you to ask
a question along with your picture. In fact, a question is required. It is a
free app. It accesses a couple of the internet image databases to see if it can
get a good match. It also sends the query to a volunteer for identification.
And, you can choose which of the above you want it to do. However, because it
accesses the image databases at free access, its queries do not have priority
when access is in strong demand. Also, the volunteers are just that, people who
are doing other things on their computers and have a window that pops up with
your image and your question. If no volunteers are available, or if there are
too many images waiting for identification, your query will take a considerable
amount of time. I have gotten responses back immediately, and I have gotten
responses back in a few minutes, and I have not gotten responses back at all.
When I used it and TapTapSee, I usually try VizWiz first because I can ask the
question.

For money recognition, I always use LookTel Money Identifier. It is fast,
accurate, and no data is sent.

For product recognition of products I already have acquired good images for, I
use LookTel Recognizer. I occasionally have sighted friends take pictures for
my database.

In all honesty, save when I used TapTapSee to compare it with VizWiz when it
initially was released, I don't use the app. I had two reasons for my decision.
First, because I knew people were playing with the app, and I knew the company
was paying for every image, I did not want to increase the burden on the
company when I could get alternative solutions to work. Second, I have always
preferred asking the question because, the information I need is not
necessarily the information a sighted identifier thinks I need.

With barcode objects, I occasionally use DigitEyes.

When out somewhere, I occasionally use CamFind because I know this product is
general market, has ads to help fund it, and gives me product and price
information.

When I have good WiFi, I will occasionally use Talking Goggles. However, the
company already went out once because Google changed the access for the video
stream recognition matching, and as far as I know, this may happen again at any

way to record voicemail

Re: Tap TapSee

2013-11-08 Thread Kellie and my lab pack
I am not surprised that taptapSee had to change to a subscription and knew
it was a matter of time. I have considered purchasing the 100 pictures but
honestly I really would like to have the ability to let the person know what
information I am needing. I have sometimes had to use 6 pics in order to get
the information I need. Now, this isn't every time, by any means. Sometimes
one picture is all that is necessary. Once, I was told that I had a red and
white spice bottle, I took another picture without turning the bottle
because I knew from experience that the printed label was where I was
pointing the camera, and then it gave me the correct information. when on
the subscription, I don't want to waste pictures on needless information
which I already know. I know that some people mentioned that getting bad
pictures is the fault of the picture taker. However, when you have zero
usable vision it isn't always easy to know whether you have the correct
distance/lighting etc. I had 20/20 vision in the past and understand how to
take a picture. Much of the time I have success when using taptapSee. I
would just like a short edit box to let them know that I would like the name
of the spice, the pattern on the shirt, the type of milk etc.

Hi Alia,

Everybody is entitled to their opinion, but I for one am happy to see that
by far the majority of people seem to understand that you can't run a
business by spending money and not have any come in. I own a retail business
and if I sold all the product I have to buy and have in inventory for what I
paid for it or for a 5% margin I would be out of business faster than a
puppydog can wag its tail.

Tap Tap See already stated that they will release an update within a week
which addresses the issue of failed pictures. Will you some time take a
picture which comes back with a result but a useless result? Yes, most
likely, but on the bright side this may encourage all of us blind folks to
ask sighted friends or family members to help us develop our picture taking
skills.

I think it's totally cool to use other apps, many of us have been doing this
all along, but I think if you learn to be good at taking pictures and
combine Tap Tap See with other apps then 100 pictures would last you at
least a couple of months maybe even 3, 4 or 5 months. This means you may
spend anywhere from $4 to $2 or even a bit less per month on this and if
easy and reliable recognition is important to you than I don't think that is
an outrageous price.

Having said this it would be nice if Tap Tap See could offer an unlimited
annual package at a subscription cost of say $99, then those who use Tap Tap
See a lot have a way to get it for a slightly discounted price and if you
were to watch for an iTunes Gift Card promo where you could buy 2 $50 cards
for $40 each, you would actually only pay $80 a year or $6.66 a month for
unlimited use.

I think most people will buy the 100 picture pack and see how long it will
take them to use it, I just don't use the app often enough to warrant
spending even $5 a month. But I will most definitely buy the 100 pictures
for $7.99 so I can continue to use the app and also to support the company
and it is my guess the 100 pictures will last me close to half a year; I do
really like Talking Goggles a lot of time because quite often I can get a
result in video mode very quickly which is enough to tell me what I am
trying to identify.

sometimes when I scan cans I have to take more than one picture, so the 100
pics are impractical, and I don't think I use it enough for the monthly fee.
We took a lot of pics mostly for fun, but I'm not spending 120 a year for

cases for 5s which offer excellent protection

Hey all,

While I wait, I have been trying to read up on possible case options. I find
that many say they work for the 5, but no mention of the 5s. I assume this is

I am curious on what cases are out there that offer excellent protection for
the phone. everyone seems to be promoting the otter box, however, that is what
I currently have for my 4s and it has not lived up to expectations. I like the
Otter box concept and would like to know are there any other cases out there,
which are similar. I want the phone completely encased and to include a built
in screen protector. Also, I don’t want the case to be any bulkier then the
Otter box. Slimmer is better.

My husband is thinking of just getting one of the leather cases from apple for
his phone but I don’t think that will be sufficient protection for my liking.
Thoughts, opinions and ideas would be appreciated.

after the 7.0 update. Others on the list verified they had similar symptoms
with various apps.

This morning, I was able to access the newspaper through a Twitter link. It
read the page correctly without any issues.

After that, I returned to the newspaper’s app, and once again the 7.0 issues
reoccurred. I wonder what the difference is between the location the Twitter
link took me to compared to where the app takes you?

On a related note, those of us who use the MLB At Bat 13 app have had a
reverse, positive experienced with 7.0.]

Prior to the update, when attempting to read the news tab in At Bat there were
reading issues, now after the update the page reads without issue.

Any thoughts on either of these situations will be appreciated.

Re: Siri's performance in IOS7

2013-10-01 Thread Kellie and my lab pack
have the same problem as shermeen in regards to trying to set a timer. ever
since the update, Often when I ask siri to set a timer I am met with total
silence. I also swipe the screen and get examples of what I can tell siri to
do, which I don't care about. lol I am in Minnesota so it isn't exclusive to
Canada. I encounter this other times I try to access Siri as well. It isn't
only with the timer. It is like sometimes it gets hung up, or is just plain
slow. Sometimes I will press the home button and try it again, and I get a
response on the second try. I have also noticed that siri is tempermental
about reading info that I ask. I could look up something, it says I found an
article on wikipedia, do you wish me to read it? I say yes and then...
nothing. I am using a 4s and maybe that accounts for some of my problems.
How does siri work for 5s users?

Wow, talk about insane list traffic. I was just here a scant few hours ago.
I'm in Ontario, Sieghard, and am relieved that the siri problems seem
to be experienced by several people. I hope you're right and that it's
a simple matter of server overload. I haven't yet used the dictation

sluggish as well.
Thanks for all the responses!

another way to close apps in the switcher

2013-09-26 Thread Kellie and my lab pack
Hey all,
I was reading through the thread about IOS 7 and saw a message commenting about
the app switcher and having to perform a 3 finger swipe up to close an app.
This is true, but I just thought I would let everyone know that there is
another way to accomplish the same thing.
while in the app switcher, make sure the rowter is switched to actions. You can
then swipe down with a single finger until it says close. You can then simply
double tap each app to close. If you want to close only one app, and then tap
on another to return focus to that ap, performa single finger flick until it
says activate.

I am not saying this to suggest that one method is better then the other. only
to make people aware that there are several ways to close apps so that a person
can decide which method works best for them. I have used both the method I
described and the 3 finger swipe. I only run into problems when I forget that
it isn’t IOS 6 and try to double tap and hold, waiting for a tone that never
comes. lol

Re: iOS 7, thoughts?

2013-09-25 Thread Kellie and my lab pack

I like IOS 7.
There are a couple bugs to be sure but overall I am happy with it.
I like the control center, and I love the new way the app switcher works.
though, I do wish they had a kill all apps button in the switcher.

I am one of the few who uses the standard typing and prefer it over touch
typing and I find that vo is more responsive when I am moving around the
screen and inputting letters.

There is a bit of sluggishness in regards to vo in other areas, but not
enough to bother me. It is something I am sure will be worked out quickly. I
like the feature of being able to 2 finger double tap to start dictation and
stop dictation, it is a handy feature. I am having fun with the hand writing
option as well.

The focus can jump around more quickly but I have learned how to adapt to it
and I don't have that happen as much as in the beginning. I have the most
challenge when moving apps into folders. I had no problems before but do to
sensativity coupled with a glitch which will randomly kick apps I had
already moved into folders, out, it is a bit annoying. But, again no big
deal since I know that it will get fixed.

I haven't been on the web much with my phone so haven't encountered the
heading bug. If this is still present that is disappointing as that was a
great frustration.

I love the new siri voices, particularly the male voice. I am still not
impressed with the high quality voice for voice over, but I felt the same
with IOS 6. I think the compact voices are easier on the ear. The hq voices,
sound hissy and not crisp, I don't know how else to describe what I dislike
about them.

I did notice that when turning my phone back on today for the first time
since I updated that it took longer then it used to. I don't know if this is
because I am using the 4s or just my specific phone, but I definitely
noticed a difference.

I am very happy with IOS 7. I know that every new program will have it's
share of quarks and oddities which didn't crop up during the testing phase.
I know too, that bugs will be addressed and that any kinks will get worked
out.

stupid decreased time delay for the touchscreen is annoying me to no end!
I'll be flicking through emails or stuff on Safari or whatever, and all of a
sudden, I jump 2 lines down instead of 1. Or I get placed at the top of the
article again, or the VoiceOver cursor jumps to some random link. I really
hope Apple takes a better attitude toward user's frustrations with this than
their blasé attitude toward things like the antenna issues in the iPhone 4.
Otherwise, things are all right. I can live with most of the other bugs, but
this one (if it's not a feature), is going to drive me absolutely bonkers!

I'm not seeing too much improvement with the headings bug.

Overall, though, I do like iOS 7.

know it's going to run just fine on my upcoming iPhone 4s.

Thanks for letting me know about how to get a comma. I had vision for a long

I can draw all the other symbols, even an sign with little difficulty.

An easy way to write a comma is to write a dot and than swipe down with 2
fingers until VO says comme. Same way you can reach the dash by drawing an
underscore and swiping down with 2 fingers. This is the easiest way to achieve
the letters or punctuation marks one is experiencing difficulties with.

  Hello,

I am quite intriqued by the new handwriting feature and have been practicing
a bit. I have a feeling that if a person knows how to write which I do since I
lost my sight at the age of almost 17, this could become a rather efficient
method of text input. I actually don’t understand why Apple does not make this
available to all iPhone users instead of restricting it to Voiceover users.

They could have made Handwriting a keyboard choice so to speak. This way if
you added the “Handwriting” keyboard to your list of keyboards, one could have
simply tapped on the keyboard button at the bottom to switch to it, but maybe
they have their reasons.

Anyhow, I would like to know if somebody has figured out how to best insert a
comma. I know of course I have to switch to the punctuation area and I have
managed to figure out how to do most commonly used symbols like a period,
semicolon, colon, question mark, exclamation mark, Dollar sign, @ symbol,
underscore etc.

I am still having a bit of trouble with a dash, if you draw a horizontal line
across it always interprets it as an underscore.

I don’t think I managed to get a comma done more than once and I have no idea
how I did it. If I simply draw a line down the screen it inserts this as a
“vertical line”, if I give the line a bit of a curve it usually inserts a right
parenthesis. Any explanations are appreciated.

  Best regards,

  Sieghard

Re: Which color of 5S -was- Re: IOS 7.01 update?

2013-09-21 Thread Kellie and my lab pack
since we are talking about the different colors is there anyone who is able to
explain in more detail the type of colors each phone is?

I am total now but I had 20/20 for a while so remember colors. My friend’s boy
friend, who is a high partial tried to describe it to me, but from what I am
seeing on list there are a couple things that don’t fit with what he was
saying. though, he was viewing the pics of the phones on an IPad so he may not
have gotten a clear image.

I am wanting to know a couple things. Is the silver a shiny silver or more like
a light gray? If so, is the entire phone shiny? or is it just certain parts,
with the rest being more matte or dull in color? Is it all one silver color or
are there different shades?

with the space gray, is it actually a black, since I have heard people mention
it is like the black phones they have had previously? when I think space gray,
I think more gun metal gray, or chrome in color. And like the silver, is it
solid color or different shades.

As for the gold phone, is it a shiny gold or more yellow. I know I have seen
items which claim to be gold but really are yellow. My high school colors of
blue and gold for instance. *smile* Is it shiny, and tdifferent shades? The
gold phone sounds unique however, I am picky on that color so hesitate on
ordering that one.

Hi Rick and others,

I waited until this afternoon to place my order, but the shipping estimate here
in Canada for the Gold, Silver and Black phones was the same this afternoon as
they were at just after Midnight when I also checked. I was going to order an
unlocked 5S 64 Gig in Gold directly from Apple, but all the shipping estimate
said was “October”. When I called the sales line today the lady told me this
could mean first week of October or fourth week of October. Anyhow, I also
ordered one of the leather cases to see what it’s like and even if I don’t use
it I’ll use another one which covers up most of the back of the phone. In the
end I decided to go with the Space Grey, so basically the same Black phone I
have now as my 4S.

The good thing is that my 4S happens to act up a lot with the proximity sensor.
I called tech support and explained this to the agent, I told him I am planning
to buy an unlocked 5S 64 Gig at full price just as I bought my 4S 64 Gig at
full price 2 years ago. He agreed that I should not have to deal with this when
trying to sell the phone, created a case and said my Apple Care runs out
October 17. As long as I call before then they will send me a new 4S 64 Gig
Black iPhone, well, maybe a refurbished one, but for my purposes it will be a
new phone. I still have the original package, an originally wrapped old style
iPhone 4S headset and a few accessories. I am hoping my 5S arrives in time so I
can get the 4S replaced without even having to use it so I can essentially sell
it as a new, unused 4S 64 Gig which I expect will get me half the price of my
new 5S. a big High Five to Apple’s fantastic customer service.

When I checked in the Apple Store app last night it said shipping for an
unlocked iPhone 5S 64 Gig Gold was “October”, the same applied to the 16 Gig
and 32 Gig Gold. Both the Space Grey and Silver models in all sizes showed a
shipping time of 7 to 10 days.

I think this shows that the Gold is either hugely popular or Apple has very
short supply, my guess it is the first. I was going to order a Gold one, but
now I decided to think it over for a day to see if I want to wait potentially
anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks, October is not a very precise estimate and I might
just go ahead and get the Space Grey which I understand is almost Black. After
all, I’m a guy, so who cares and once it’s in the leather case or another case

problem when moving apps around. anyone else had this bug

2013-09-21 Thread Kellie and my lab pack
Hey all,
so I have noticed something which happens sometimes when I am moving apps
around on screen.
I will have several apps which I decide I want to move into my various folders.
I will get a couple moved in with no problem and then suddenly the current app
I am moving doesn’t go into the folder I dragged it too. additionally, all the
apps that I had already successfully placed into their respective folders were
no longer in the folders and were back on the grid of icons like when they were
first downloaded. It is like it went back in time.

I thought this happened yesterday but then attributed it to me doing something
wrong since I was still adjusting to the responsiveness of the screen. I had it
happen again today though. I reinstalled apps I had to delete in order to
update the IOS. I was starting to move them into folders and got 3 done. I held
my finger over the folder I wanted the 4th app to go into, it made the tone
like the folder was opening and I was suddenly in an entirely different folder
then the one I was sitting on. I at first thought maybe my finger slid a bit
and I unintentionally moved the app into the wrong folder. It was not in the
folder that was opened and I couldn’t find it at first. I then discovered that
it was back out on the third page of the home screen apps, and the others which
I had moved previously were all back there too.

I tried again only to encounter the same problem.
I was just curious if anyone else has experienced this issue? I am unsure what
causes it so have not been able to deliberately make it happen.

Re: folders Re: IOS 7 visual issues and a couple comments

2013-09-20 Thread Kellie and my lab pack

Hey Tessa,
Folders can actually have multiple pages now so the number of apps in each
is much larger.
I don't know if there is a cap on how many pages a folder can have, but my
games folder has 38 apps in it just as an example. I always wished that you
could have multiple pages in a folder because I hated having multiple
folders with the same name and now I do.

I agree that having to wait for 5 seconds is a bit tedius. This is also
where I notice the sensativity most when working with the screen.
when I was moving apps around, sometimes it would not open the folder I
wanted to move the app into, while at other times it would. Also, if the
folder I wanted to move the app too, was in the first or 4th column, it
would frequently switch to the previous or next page, which got a bit
frustrating. It made moving apps a bit more time consuming then I was used
too. I got better as I worked with it more but was surprised on how quickly
the pages switched. Pages switching quickly is in complete contrast to how
it was on the old IOS, at least that was my experience.

I did notice that the sounds to indicate what position the app was in,
doesn't appear as reliable as prior versions. Sometimes I would hear the
blip and it would say, column 4, row 4 but more often then not, I didn't get
any indication of where I was dragging the app to.

Subject: folders Re: IOS 7 visual issues and a couple comments

a couple more comments.
I didn't see a comment on list about folders, but I haven't kept up with all
the mail. Folders are larger, anyone know how much larger they can be, I'm
assuming now you can get 18 items into one which is great, anyone gone
higher than that?
One thing that does bug me, when moving an item out of a folder you have to
hold it outside the folder for a full 5 seconds before the folder closes,
now that is down right tedious. one or two seconds might be reasonable, but
five??

is transit guru for Cleveland Oh accessible

2013-06-05 Thread Kellie and my lab pack
Hey all,
I was curious if anyone has used the transit guru app for cleveland Oh and if
so does it appear to be accessible? I am sure it is a long shot but figured I
would ask. I am heading back home this friday for an extended visit and it has
been so long since I have used the transit system there that I know things have
changed. The only app I found which apparently has info about the bus lines and
rail lines is the transit guru. It is 2 bucks, which I know isn’t a lot,
however I would like to know if anyone else tried it before I purchase it.
Thank you all in advance,

Re: Issue with Audio Archery

2013-06-01 Thread Kellie and my lab pack

There are ten levels in all. I have made it to ten.
In order to move on to the next level you have to get a score equal or
greater then the target score. for instance in round 2 you need 6 to
advance. If you fail to reach the target score then the game ends. I have
gotten to ten which requires 28 to win.

as for it being buggy I haven't seen that yet so can't offer any help.

Hi Lisa,

Unfortunately I don't have a fix for the issue you encounter other than to
suggest you delete the app and reinstall it. I also find the app is a bit
sporatic, sometimes when I play it it doesn't go through all the levels, I
am not even sure exactly how many there are supposed to be, I think I have
gotten up to level 8, but sometimes it only goes to level 6 and then starts
over.

Hi,all.

Last night I downloaded Audio Archery and made it to level 7.

This morning I can't get past the intro. I disable voice over and start the

game, I'm told the score for round one. Then there's a sound moving from
right to left much like the arrow sound effect, but it's not. I can't get
the game to do anything until the round is up. Tapping or flicking up or
down does nothing.

I tried closing the game using the app switcher and then restarting with the

same results. I also tried rebooting the phone and got the same thing. Any

thoughts? This was working perfectly last night.

Re: Accessable way of making confrence calls?

2013-05-27 Thread Kellie and my lab pack

Richard is correct, there is a merge button.

after tapping on add call, you can either find the contact in your contact
list or manually type in the phone number with the keypad. It will call the
person and you will tap merge which is approximately half way down on the
left side of the screen. One thing to note is that you can not merge calls
while the phone is ringing. You have to wait until the phone is answered
before tapping merge.

voice dream and kindle

2013-05-20 Thread Kellie and my lab pack
Hey all,
I was just curious if voice dream works with the Kindle app? I downloaded the
free version of voice dream and don’t see it in the list, but was maybe hoping
that I missed something or that there was a way to add it. I am guessing
probably not... however I thought I would ask.

This would be awesome if it were possible as it would encourage me to actually
read the books I downloaded. I just can’t get into the book with the current vo
voice.

This would be a much cheaper solution since my only other option is to use a
braille display and sadly I don’t have one.

Re: VO question about reading content on the web

2013-04-21 Thread Kellie and my lab pack
The only tweek I have found is to pause speech with a double finger single
tap. Then flick off the heading and then flick back to it. Vo seems to read
it when you are flicking, It is only when you are navigating by heading that
it loses focus. If you are trying to just skip past the problem heading,
jumping to the next heading as quickly as possible seems to prevent it from
losing focus too.

Re: Headings [was ]

2013-04-18 Thread Kellie and my lab pack

good to know that I am not the only one having this frustrating difficulty.

I have found that sometimes, if I flick quickly past the heading that tmakes
voiceover lose focus, I can navigate a little farther. also, if I find a
heading I want to keep focus on, I will double tap to pause speech, then
flick left and back to the right to have it read it. This is a temporary
work around. I do hope this bug gets fixed soon.

Hi Chris.
The problem is that when you try to navigate by heading, after a
certain point, VoiceOver will jump to some other random point in the
app. This seems true for both Safari and the contacts app. For
example, if I use the rotor and flick through the letters of my
contacts, once I get past the letter e, it jumps back up to some
other point within that app. It seems to be a VoiceOver problem, but
not one that is in every app. For example, I can jump by headings
just fine with NFB Newsline. Not sure exactly what the issue is,
though it seems to happen consistently with Safari. I wonder if Crome
suffers the same issue?

Actually, I think Apple has a bit more of a serious issue to work
on in that they need to fix the way VoiceOver no longer handles
headings properly, so this may get put on the back burner for

Re: What do they do???

2013-04-12 Thread Kellie and my lab pack
I have been debating whether I want to jump in this topic. Personally, I
feel that this is off topic but since the mods have Ok’d it I guess I can
give an opinion.

Having taught technology to people who are blind or visually impaired in the
past, I know that you cannot assume that everyone has the same capabilities
and skills as you. I have taught things to individuals, have them come in
the next day and we were right back where we started. It is at that point
that you have to step back and think outside the box and change the
approach. Does it mean that the individual I was working with was lazy? I
don't think so. They were trying their hardest to understand.

I think it is presumptuous to deem a person lazy because they ask a question
that you feel is stupid or can be obtained on their own. Who determines what
information can be researched on their own verses what should be asked on a
list. On a technicality, probably every single question that is asked here
can be found on a web site somewhere and if that’s the case why does this
list exist at all?

I have done my share of research, and yet I still will ask questions on a
list. For instance, I am in the market for a new laptop and considering a
Mac. I have read articles, looked on both applevis and maccessibility and
yet I still joined the list to ask questions. Because sometimes it is nice
to have an actual human respond.

Another thing to consider is that you don't know the person or where they
are coming from. We all have areas where we excel and areas where we are
weak. Additionally, you have no idea if there are any cognitive challenges
that an individual has which makes processing certain tasks very difficult.

I have a friend who uses the computer and has even taken classes; however,
he is really incapable doing much beyond email. The internet is beyond him.
It isn't for lack of trying though. He just doesn't get it. The fact that he
can email was an accomplishment. He is not a stupid man either. It is just
that technology is not his strength.

My father used a computer but really didn't know what he was doing. He was
forever calling me for help. I would explain how he could do it but the next
time it happened I would get a call again. He just couldn't retain the
information.

I am not saying that you can't assist and offer guidance as well as explain
how a person can do things for themselves or research. Helping a person be
self sufficient is great. However, I believe that this can be and should be
done respectfully without being condescending and without sarcasm.

I have written an iPhone basics tutorial that I have shared with friends to
help them when they first get an iPhone. I have been told that it has been
very beneficial and allowing them to be successful at using their iPhones
and cut down on frustration. I am glad that I could assist them in that way.

There are many things discussed on list which I find very easy to do but
that doesn't mean because I find it simple that everyone else should as
well. If I don't like a message I delete it and the thread and move on.

As for those questions generating needless traffic on list. I must say that
this thread has garnered its share. It is the reason why I hesitated to post
on this at all.

In short treat others how you would like to be treated if you asked a
question. Everyone should feel that this is a comfortable place that they
can come to when they are having a problem. They should not worry that they
are going to get told that their question is stupid and that they shouldn't
ask it.

I hope that I did not offend anyone in my post. If I did that was not my
intent.

Respectfully,
Kellie, Loki and retired July

Hi Ricardo,

You fail to realize that not everyone is able to function at your level. If
someone has recently been equipped with a device and wants to know the price
of another device that could be better for them or to figure if they can
afford both and don't know yet how to get that information, that's a
legitimate question. If someone is not comfortable activating a button
without knowing what will happen, that's a legitimate question also. If
someone even needs someone else to install apps for them to use because they
can't do it themselves and they want to know how much it costs, that's
legitimate also

So, you see, every question is a legitimate question if you don't know the
answer or can't find the answer on your own. I never saw this list as a
place where we only should work with people who have a certain level of
abilities. I am just having a lot of trouble getting some people to
understand that there is no such thing as a common denominator in people's
ability to function.

I am not ignoring the validity of the original post, I am just saying as
part of my
