Siri and iOS 17 problem
I am trying to help a friend with a problem that has popped up since iOS 17.1. He uses Siri to get his sports scores. He says that, as she is reading back the information, any little noise will stop her from reading. It is like Siri has an open mic all the time. This behavior just started recently. He thought that an update fixed it, and it worked well for about a day, but then went back to this problematic behavior. Any insights on how to solve this problem would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance. Sent from my iPhone -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list. Re: iPhone Plus, Definitely Heating It Up: Mark is Taking a Pass on iPhone 15 Series
Yesterday, while using the Bing app, I was notified by my iPhone 15 Pro that it would need to stop charging until it was able to cool down. This was the first time this happened and it occurred after installing the update to iOS 17 which was supposed to address this problem. I do know that, even on my previous 13 pro, the Bing app would seem to make my phone pretty warm, but never so much that it had to pause charging. I have a case which protects the side and back of the phone, but I have nothing covering the screen. The case has many openings that should let heat dissipate, as it is basically just a thin case protecting the back and sides of the phone. while this episode was the first and only such occurrence, I am hoping this will not present a significant problem in the future, as I am very excited about this phone and have never needed any kind of servicing for my previous iPhones. I do wonder if there is some kind of association with certain apps, but I really hope this can be addressed without Apple having to throttle the software to keep it from overheating. Re: Mark on Apple News Plus, Not Bad, Not Bad at All
Mark, I agree with you that Apple news plus is quite useful, especially when you are doing podcasts where you need news articles. I did have a question about the Apple one subscription. It looks like there are two tiers of subscription pricing and that the Apple News+ is only included in the more expensive tier. is this correct or am I misunderstanding? I am not interested in the arcade or AppleTV stuff, just the iCloud storage, music and news. I think the more expensive tier is 36 bucks a month, which I don’t think is worth the price for me since I am not interested in AppleTV or arcade, but if Apple News+ is included in the lower tier subscription, I would get it in a heartbeat. Re: Chat GPT, Anyone?
ChatGPT can be a lot of fun and can be very useful in the creative process, the app is very simple to use and I think it is a great way for beginners to experience working with AI chat bots. At this time, chat GPT cannot check the web or provide sources for its answers, so if you are doing anything that requires up to date information, you will need a chat bot like Bing that can go out, search the web and bring back links to the actual sources it used to create the output. There was a time briefly when chat GPT could use Bing chat to do Web checking, but that feature was taken out because of some legal issues. They say they will reinstate it eventually. For anything needing up-to-date information or fact checking, I do recommend the Bing app, although it is not as Easy to use and there is advertising, but I still like it best right now. But if you just want to have some fun or get some help with the creative process, the free ChatGPT is a fine choice. Sent from my iPhone > On Jul 10, 2023, at 10:39 PM, M. Re: A problem with YouTube app
Yes, this is quite annoying for sure. I have submitted feedback to YouTube on this problem, and I hope others will do the same. There is supposedly a workaround where, when you open the app for the first time, you turn, voiceover off, and then swipe down with your finger and then re-enable voiceover. This works unreliably for me. Also, it is very difficult to edit comments. My only other suggestion is that you leave feedback to YouTube letting them know that this is a problem for you as a blind person. Good luck. Re: why I don't like face ID
Contrary to popular wisdom, on my iPhone 13 Pro with the latest software update, my face ID will just not work in the dark. Unfortunately for me, I forgot about this when I was sitting in my very dark room this morning trying to access my bank account. Having failed to recognize my face after three attempts, the app told me that I was locked out of my Bank because I forgot my bank password, which the app would not let me store in my keychain when I first set things up. So now, I am trying to recover my account. Coming up with a new strong password and typing it in on my iPhone is difficult, as it will not let me have a computer generated password and it has a time limit on typing things in. with all the capitals and punctuation and whatever else, with trying to type fast, my first password and my confirmation password never match. then, I am kicked out of the entire system and have to start the process all over again. this is not the first time something like this has happened to me, all because it did not recognize my face in the beginning. When I went to check my credit card balance, I was a little smarter this time and actually walked downstairs and was in good light. it recognized my face in a split second and there were no problems. so now, I am spending the afternoon engaged in the convoluted and arduous process of reestablishing access to my bank account with a password change. yes, I have attention turned off in the Face ID and I reset it frequently when it actually stops recognizing my face entirely. I am about ready to just ditch face ID all together for logins. according to my cited compatriots, my face does not change overnight so as to be unrecognizable. I am perplexed that I am having such difficulty considering the fact that most other blind users are not. Touch ID always worked flawlessly for me, but I accept the fact that we will never go back to that system. it is really disheartening that I have this problem and cannot seem to find solutions. I love my iPhone and I am thankful for its accessibility to me as a blind person, but I am just hoping that I will find a solution to the face ID conundrum. Re: Double tapping on video short in Youtube app feed using VoiceOver Youtube 17.35.3
Some people have used a workaround which works sometimes for me but not always. The first time you open the YouTube app, turn voiceover off and swipe down on the screen with one finger, then reload voiceover and supposedly, it will be back to normal. You have to do this each time you open the YouTube app for the first time. Some people are saying that they are not having any trouble with the latest YouTube app, but I certainly am. Attention has always been off, as I was instructed by others on this list to do back when I first got my phone about eight months ago or so. Believe me, I have tried everything. I don’t mind face ID, but I had better success with the fingerprint, that’s for sure. Re: Face ID hit or miss
I would say face ID works for me about 50% of the time. for reasons unclear to me, sometimes it will just completely not recognize my face and I have to reset it. One thing that has helped me is to also set up the alternate face ID so that essentially, it has two copies of my face. I know people say that it should not matter if you are in a light or dark environment, but in my very dark bedroom, it rarely recognizes my face. it certainly has gotten a lot better with practice, but I don’t have quite the luck that Sieghard has had, despite setting mine up per the instructions given on this list about six months ago. Re: Can anyone send me a list of idiot-proof instructions for the gestures I need to know for an IPhone with no physical home button please?
I am resending this message from Richard because it saved my bacon while I was trying to learn the gestures without the home button on my new iPhone 13 Pro. Re: Face ID Revisited
Fazil, if it is any consolation, I am having the same struggle with face ID. I have mastered the gestures to get to things without the home button, but face ID continues to bedevil me. Interestingly, sometimes it will work with no problem and I have no idea why, but mostly, I cannot unlock my phone using my face. I have attention turned off and like you, I have successfully gone through the training exercise multiple times, with and without sighted help, which ends with a message that face ID was successfully set up, but for reasons I can’t understand, mostly it does not work. I have only had the phone for 3 days and I know that other blind people out there with prosthetic eyes are doing face ID successfully, so I refuse to give up, but I admit it is quite frustrating since I love everything else about my 13 Pro. I have even reset the face ID several times in different light and dark situations, with and without sighted help, and even set up an alternate face, but still no joy. Also, it is very hard to get the keypad to come up to enter the passcode. You will have to learn the new gestures for getting to the home screen, control center, app switcher, etc., but I did not find that very difficult after practice. I know that I have to embrace change and except new things, and again, I like this bigger phone and I love the battery life compared to my iPhone 8, so I don’t want to go back to that phone again, but I hate using a passcode to authenticate, so I am really hoping that I can get this worked out. I wish us both patience and good luck. LOL. Re: IOS 13.1.2 Cursor jumping all over the place in the email app
It does not work for me When it comes to reading messages. I’m not sure if you all are talking about reading or composing. Definitely, turning it off helps with composing, but reading is another issue altogether. I spend so much time just looking for the body of a message that it is ridiculous. And in the past, I was able to swipe up to the delete button and just double tap it to delete a message. Now, I cannot do that anymore and sometimes the delete button is nearly impossible to find, Even at the bottom of the screen. For me at least, reading mail is dreadful right now and I really hope it gets fixed soon. Sent from my iPhone > On Oct 8, 2019, at 10:25 AM, Dave wrote: > > Hi Sandy. I would appreciate it. Re: Seeing AI App Question Please.
While I totally agree that Voice Dream Scanner is a fantastic app and definitely worth the money, Seeing AI currently does more things, like the barcode reader. I have definitely noticed a change for the worse in Seeing AI over the past month or so. I have tried deleting and reinstalling the app, rebooting my phone, resetting network settings, etc. if Voice Dream Scanner could do barcode, currency etc. recognition like Seeing AI, it would be wonderful, but for now, these apps serve different sets of purposes. Hi Keith. In the YouTube app, when you bring up a vidio, there is a button called “More Actions” which on my iPhone 8 is in sort of the top right of the screen, one swipe right after the “Share” button. Doing US taxes independently, is it possible?
Hi everyone. Tax time is upon us in the US and I was wondering if there were ways to deal with this independently using my iPhone. I typically got help with this in the past, but was hoping to try doing it myself this time around since my economic situation has not changed much this year, so I anticipate that things should be pretty simple. Upgrade phone now or wait?
Okay, so here’s my quandry. I’m itching like a dog with a bad case of fleas to upgrade my SE to something else. Verizon is dangling some pretty sweet carrots my way to go with the 8. The thing is, I really like the form factor of the SE and how it fits in my hand and pocket, so I’d really like to stick with the smaller device if possible. So, should I go for the 8 now or hang in there for a possible refresh of the SE. I have one more payment on this current unit. What do you all think? Thanks in advance for any insights and have a great day. Lynn Sent from my iPhone -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list. Dictation and the mail app
This message is for a friend of mine who uses an iPhone ate with the latest updates. He says that, for about the past month, when he dictates an email message, it is not being read back to him. When he is dictating a message in the message app, this does not happen. As he is dictating the email message, he can swipe to the text area and what he dictates is there, but it is not being bred back to him as he is dictating. As I am not having this particular problem myself, I am hoping you all will have some insights I could share with him on how to solve this problem. Thanks in advance for your assistance. Questions on Apple Watch keyboard entry
I have the 2nd gen Apple Watch with the most recent updatedWatch OS version and I have two questions about entering text. 1. Is it possible to touch type with VO? Having to double tap each character is quite annoying and time consuming. 2. My doctor's office called the other day with one of those automated appointment confirmation systems. When I took the call on the watch, I could not for the life of me remember how to get a number pad up so I could press 1 to confirm the appointment. Thanks in advance for any insights. Re: Youtube version 12.23 and apparent absence of collapse video button VoiceOver iOS 10.3.2
In my experience, this video collapse button issue is sort of random. Sometimes I can find it easily exactly where I expect it to be, and at other times, I cannot find it easily, but with some fiddling, eventually find it. I do notice that the app overall seems to crash more than usual. Sometimes, just triple clicking the home button to turn voiceover on and then off again will bring focus where I need it to be. I can mostly do what I want to do with the app, but I do hope I can get my old happy YouTube read experience back again soon. It still has not fixed this issue and it seems that the collapse video button is also not present. This button enabled a person to exit out of an existing video and watch other videos on their recommended tab or to search for a different video altogether via the app's search button. With the collapse video button eliminated, one can only pause and resume a video, or watch videos related to the current one. Does anyone have a workaround for collapsing a video? For now, I have been closing the app in the switcher after the conclusion of a video and re-opening it. Re: Searching in the App Store broken?
Mary, I had the same problem on Saturday night when I did a search in the store. I am not running the beta, so I think it might be on their end. It seems to be somewhat of an intermittent problem as I was able to do a search yesterday morning successfully. Not sure what to make of it, but hope it gets straightened out somehow. Double tapping on search results resulted in no change. Up in the search box it said 137 results along with my search term. Double tapping on that closed everything out and still gave me no results. And around it went. I tried searching for just outlook. Then there were things that were related, each of which had a button next to it, like related searches would be. But never did I ever see one listing for a app. I don't get it. Is the store broken? There isn't a beta of the App Store, so far as I am aware. So even though I have the beta of iOS 10 here, I would think the store performance would be the same, wouldn't it? Hi Rebecca. If the student has played a video in the official YouTube app and wants to play it again, Just do a two finger double tap and it will start playing again from the beginning. I know this because I tend to fall asleep with YouTube relaxation videos and want to replay them from the beginning when I wake up.you don't have to mess with the position slider if you are at the very end of the video. Re: is there any accessible youtube downloader for Iphone?
Just tried Downie and it is indeed accessible. Unfortunately, however, it returns an error message saying it can no longer download YouTube content. I don’t know if this is because the developer has not updated the app to the new API or if it is indeed not possible for these types of apps to work with Google anymore. I did hear that Google was planning a subscription service for YouTube in the near future, so maybe they are getting ready for that by restricting what the third party apps are able to do, but not sure of that. Re: Relaxation App For Help Getting To Sleep?
Hi Destene. If traditional relaxation methods prove inadequate or if you want a unique type of relaxation experience, I would recommend trying ASMR. I really like an app called ASMR 5 - Listen, Relax and Sleep by Sandratra Razafindralambo https://appsto.re/us/V1BFH.i This was not a free app at the time I downloaded it and there are a few unlabeled buttons which I will let the developer know about, but it works very well with VO in its current state. Here is the App Store description: Are you the kind of person who has trouble getting to sleep? Have you already experienced that relaxing sensation at the hair salon when someone is washing or brushing your hair? Or maybe when watching Bob Ross paint clouds and trees on PBS? There are certain things that trigger a relaxing sensation when we hear them; it's like a slight natural high. This experience is called ASMR. ASMR 5 will help you achieve the best ASMR experience on your iOS device. It provides everything you may need to relax from High quality audio samples to HD videos, including Advanced trigger search, Playlists and Artists browsing, Personal video collections, Real-time video feed and so much more. This app also supports background audio and background streaming so if you’re listening to a sample or watching a video and want to switch to another app (or just lock your device), you can. And it's great not just on the iPhone, but on the iPad as well where ASMR 5 takes great advantage of the expanded iPad canvas. OVERVIEW • Simple and intuitive interface • 25 High quality audio samples available at start • Personal collections to help you organize your videos • Interactive browsing to discover new ASMR artists • Powerful search engine with filters (duration, sort, and video quality) • Subscriptions to quickly access your favorite ASMR artists profiles • Featured Artists to help ASMR artists get more exposure, views and subscribers • Real-time update for video feeds with new releases every day • Automatic binaural (3D) audio support when available • Automatic bookmarking and resume of your videos • Share everything via SMS, Email, Twitter, Facebook and AirDrop • Multitasking and background audio support (control center and lockscreen) • Universal app that runs great on all Apple devices: iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. If you have any questions about ASMR in general or this app in particular, please don't hesitate to ask and I will try to assist. HTH. Problem with official YouTube app
I know it has been claimed on this list by others that the accessibility of the official YouTube app has improved over time, but I seem to have a vexing problem I'm hoping you can help me with. When I first open the YouTube app and try to swipe right through my list of new videos, I eventually encounter a More button whereupon VO suddenly loses focus and I have to do a 3-finger swipe to scroll the screen. It seems like focus is lost as soon as I encounter the More button. I find this really frustrating, as I do not like the way my list of suggested videos is laid out now on the screen. I am using an iPhone 5S with the latest IOS. Any assistance with this problem would be most sincerely appreciated. Thanks in advance for any insights. Re: Bard Mobile search problem in IOS 8
Hi David. I duplicated searching in Bard and experienced the same issue. However, I did find a workaround that seems to work.it seems that when you swipe right on the Bard search page, it is not scrolling the cursor. Therefore, what you have to do is do a three finger swipe up to go to page 2 and then find the text box with your finger not by swiping but by moving your finger around until you find that text box, then do a double tap and it should bring up the keyboard. I'm not sure if I'm making sense here, but I think what is happening is that even though voiceover is saying text box when you swipe right, it is not scrolling the screen, so the cursor is actually not on the text box. So you have to move your finger around and maybe even three finger swipe up to the next screen to actually be on the text box.hope this helps. Re: overview of accessibility features in iOS 8
Wow, what a shame. I was so excited about iOS eight and even getting a new phone, but with what you are saying, it seems I shouldn't do either, at least for a while. Thanks so much for the heads up. I have been running the iOS 8 Beta since June and as far as I can tell Apple has listened to hardly any of the feedback and bug reports provided by blind beta testers. There have been 5 Beta versions and now the Goldmaster and almost all of the most serious and annoying bugs are still there. I hope that they react faster once the public release happens next Wednesday and hopefully blind people start flooding Apple Accessibility with emails and phone calls about these issues. Re: Any problems with the fingerprint scanner?
Hi Chuck. I have the fingerprint scanner on the 5S and I love it. When you first set up the fingerprint scanner, you will be asked to move your finger around a little bit on the scanner so it can get all angles of your finger. I think you get up to five finger print settings. I did two fingers on each hand. This is a good idea for convenience and in case you have an unfortunate encounter with a meat slicer or something else terrible. Of course, nothing in computing is 100% secure, but if you are concerned about your fingerprints being stored in the cloud, no worries. They are stored on the chip in your phone and not in the cloud. Also, I'm fairly certain that if you start using the fingerprint scanner and don't like it, you can disable it. You can even label each finger print with the name of the finger. This way, you can delete any fingers you don't want, and you can even put in a finger from another person and label it in case they need to get into your phone, they can, just as long as you trust them. As I said, you don't even have to use it if you don't want to, but I think you'll find that it is really wonderful and you'll never want to go back. Hope this helps. Re: Amazing iPhone 5 Call Quality
Gosh Mark, your message makes me curious to know if the improved volume and sound quality would apply to recordings made with the iphone 5 as well as the call quality. I wonder about this because I tend to be a bit softspoken and on my 4S, I could never get my recordings to be loud enough, no matter which recording app I tried. I too am on the fence about whether or not to upgrade, but if I could make better recordings with the 5 than I can currently with the 4S, that might be at least one more selling point. I would also add that, in my experience at least, Siri gets more and more accurate as you use it, so don't give up if things don't work well right away. Of course, there are always those server and internet issues.
