The Hulu app on the Amazon fire TV works well with Voice View. The app on
the iPhone is very accessible as well.

Appliance App Accessibility

2019-11-12 Thread Todd W
Does anyone have experience with the GE Geneva or Whirlpool app for oven or
microwave control? If so what is your opinion of the app? Trying to choose
smart appliances for a new house.

Thanks,

Safari Shortcuts not launching

2019-11-08 Thread Todd W
Hi All,

After updating a few weeks ago to iOS 13 I noticed that the shortcut
buttons in Safari didn’t launch when tapped. I’m referring to the
favorites that come up when you tap the address bar to be able to type in a
web URL. I hoped that subsequent updates would resolve the issue but am
still seeing it after updating to 13.2.2. It’s happening on my iPhone 7
and the odd thing is that my iPad Pro works as expected after the updates.
Is anyone else having this issue? I’ve not seen reference to it as a known
issue but may have missed it somewhere along the line.

Thanks,

Todd

Re: How to delete apps from my Apple watch?

2019-10-31 Thread Todd W
Hi Ann,

You can remove the apps from your watch by going into the Watch app on your
phone. From the My Watch tab scroll down until you see the heading
‘Installed on Watch”. Tap each app and you’ll see a setting to ‘Show on
Watch”. Simply turn it off and it will remove the app from the watch. You
should also check the mail settings, music settings, and photos settings to
see how much of each of those are being stored on your watch. Once you
adjust these settings it’s a good idea to power cycle the watch and then
check the space again.

Re: Lack of new email notification exchange email iOS 13.1.1

2019-09-30 Thread Todd W
I just installed the 13.1.2 update and it seems to have corrected the
Exchange account updating issue. I can’t say as it fixes your notification
issue since I don’t have notifications turned on for this particular
account. You may want to take a look at the notifications for the specific
e-mail account in question as each account can have specific notifications.

Re: Air pods and multi point?

2018-11-06 Thread Todd W
It *is* easy to switch, but not nearly as seamless as devices like the
Voyager Legend. It’s purely a matter of what you’re used to. I used to
use a Voyager Legend and it switched flawlessly between phone and iPad.
I’m one of those who doesn’t want the bluetooth device to autoconnect to
the watch, ever, so I removed it from the bluetooth devices on the watch to
keep the watch from hijacking the connection. I think the point to the
conversation is that Apple’s implementation of multipoint is a bit lacking.

Yes. I use it both on my phone and watch.. it’s very accessible and as
accurate as any weather app I’ve tried. I especially find the notifications

Re: Small Blue Tooth Ear piece

2018-09-28 Thread Todd W
I will echo Sieghard’s recommendation. I have had the AirPods for a few
months now and really enjoy them. I used to use a Plantronics Voyager
Legend, which worked well but was quite a bit larger. It still fit in my
pocket but I did break one that way because it wasn’t protected. The
AirPods stay in their charging case which is about the size of a dental
floss container and the sound is surprisingly good. Only drawback is that
they are around $150, but as seamless as they work and the quality of their
build really help justify the extra cost in my opinion.

Watch OS5 and Siri Raise to Speak

2018-09-25 Thread Todd W
Sieghard,

Just an update on the thread regarding Siri raise to speak in the new Watch
OS... Upon more research I’ve found that the watch must be raised to a
vertical position, for the raise to speak to activate properly. Raising
the watch face perpendicular to the floor and then speaking seems to work
pretty consistently. I’d been trying to use it just by raising my arm and
the watch was in a more horizontal position, parallel to the floor which
didn’t work well at all.

still easy to locate. Don’t think you’d have any trouble with it. It’s

Sieghard,

With the app open on the screen press and hold the side button until the
power off screen comes up then press and hold the crown and it will force
quit the application.

I’m still having issues with raise to speak and Siri though. I have the
raise to speak setting turned on but it is very inconsistent with results.

Re: IOS 12 and message notifications

2018-09-18 Thread Todd W
Hi Marie,

I haven’t seen this problem on iOS 12. I’ve updated my iPhone, iPad, and
have another iPad which ran the beta. Double tapping asks me to unlock
with TouchID or my pin and goes right into the conversation. You may
already have, but if you haven’t, try restarting your phone.

Re: Latency with using Bluetooth earbuds

I can concur with Andy... I’ve used several bluetooth headphones/headsets
in the past and definitely a difference between them. Plantronics Legend
works very well, and I’ve just purchased Air Pods and they work very well
too. There will always be a bit of latency with any bluetooth but
definitely less noticeable in some rather than others.

Hi Sieghard,

I think I know why we have the discrepencies. I’m using the Honeywell
Total Comfort Connect app, not the Honeywell Home app. I didn’t realize
there was another app from Honeywell that would control the thermostats.
I’ll check it out. Thanks for your detailed descriptions.

Rotor action changes without intervention

2015-04-30 Thread Todd W
Hi All,

I'm wondering if this is a common scnario. It seems like it's been
happening since the release of iOS 8, but I can't be certain. Here's
what's happening on both my iPhone 6 and iPad Air 2 running iOS 8.3:

When either on the lock screen with iMsg or txt message alerts being
displayed or in the Messages app, a single finger flick announces the next
Action menu item, where you can delete or activate, etc. If I perform a
delete and then flick on the next message the rotor selection has moved
from Actions to another item, typically headings. It seems to be moving to
whatever the next counter clockwise item in the rotor is. This seems to
only be happening with Messages and doesn't crop up when deleting other
types of notifications. Is this something that others are experiencing?
It's beginning to drive me bananas...

Thanks,

Todd

Keyboard Enter Key Action

2015-04-17 Thread Todd W
Hi All,

I'm using a bluetooth keyboard with my iPad and was wondering if there is a
way to actually send an iMsg when the Enter key is pressed, instead of it
doing a new line? I've seen this option in a lot of third party messaging
apps but can't seem to find a way around it in iMsg.

Thanks,

Todd

of them offer full guitar tutorials. Albrt100 is more focused towards the
flamenco and classical/instrumental aspect of playing. Whereas the other
three do everything individual song tutorials, chords, rhythms, etc.

Indeed Albert100 offers the same lessons he does in Spanish in English,
but well…his English language accent is a bit on the rough side and it
would probably be a challenge for someone to follow along. He’s the one I’m
partial too. I’ve picked up some good Beethoven and Tárrega pieces via his
instruction. I believe all these guys with the exception of Ivan González
has their own guitar playing/learning website, but again, they’re going to
 be in Spanish.

I’ll often throw these videos to my Apple TV via my phone for better sound
and picture in case I might need my sighted wife to tell me where a certain
finger placement or sequence is if I can’t figure it out on my own.

I’ve been able to pick up some classical and flamenco pieces this way.
There’s always something one can pick up on the guitar. I’ve tried using
some guitar tab apps, but even if the app itself is accessible, reading the
tabs really isnt’ feasible with Voiceover. At least not in my experience.

YouPlayer is an accessible app for YouTube along with the native YouTube

Re: New iPad Air 2

2014-12-30 Thread Todd W
Katey,

Sorry I'm coming in on this late but I experienced the same issue with the
3 finger swipe when in horizontal orientation if Zoom is enabled. Trying
to scroll through a list of items is impossible but works in portrait
orientation. Turning Zoom off fixes the issue for me, which is a pain
since then if I need to zoom I have to turn VO off and use standard pinch
to zoom. This seems to have started with iOS 8 for me.

Re: iPhone 6 Case Recommendations?

2014-11-03 Thread Todd W
I did go ahead and get the Defender for my iPhone 6. The form factor is
definitely different than the Defender for the iPhone 5 series. It's much
slimmer and sleeker. I like the case design. The issue with the gap
between the protecor and screen is *very* annoying though. Tapping and
swiping can be quite a chore at times. I'm going to give it a few more
days to hopefully break in somewhat but not sure if I can live with the
annoyance long term.

iOS8 - Typing feedback issue

2014-09-18 Thread Todd W
Hi All,

Wondering if anyone else has seen an issue where you can't silence the
typing feedback in VO? I upgraded a 4S yesterday to play around with and
found that even if I set the typing feedback to 'None' for the software
keyboard VO still announces the key once it's typed. Is this an isolated
issue or more common?

Thanks,

Todd

Re: There's Something About that 5.5 Screen Size

2014-09-17 Thread Todd W
Have to agree with you Sieghard. I think Apple has the best shot of making
large scale mobile payment adoption a reality. Google has had Wallet for
several years but it's failed to gain traction. I'm anxious to see how
quickly other financial institutions and retailers climb on the ApplePay
train. I think once people understand how ApplePay works and how much more
secure it will be than using a card it will gain momentum rapidly. I hope
five years from now we'll look back and wonder how we ever got along
without it.

Yes, you also say Samsung has twice the market share of Apple, but why then

 statistics
like web usage of tablets or smartphones iOS clearly dominates. I just
 think
that in many cases you can make statistics say anything and just because
/Apple has waited to put out larger phones does not mean they are not
innovating. Just look at things like Touch Id, Apple introduced it and
shortly after Android phones with fingerprint sensors started showing up.
Making a larger device is not innovation, in fact, it's easier to make a
larger device with better battery life and potentilally more features like
different sensors than it is to make a smaller device. I think Apple has
made a pretty strong statement with their new phones and especially with
Apple Pay that they are far from done with innovation. We may find in 2 or
 3
years that Apple Pay will proof to be a very compelling reason why one
should have an iPhone since I fully expect Apple Pay will become common
place and that Google may not be as successful in coming up with their
 version of it.

I'm not sure I'd consider Samsung the little boy on the block. Android has
85% of the smart phone market share
 http://www.idc.com/prodserv/smartphone-os-market-share.jsp and Samsung has
twice the market share of Apple
 http://www.idc.com/prodserv/smartphone-market-share.jsp

Apple market share has slipped from 18.8% to 11.7% over the last three
years. Coincidentally, three years ago is when the Galaxy Note was
 released.
I think it's hard to deny that Apple is worried about Android and Samsung,
and there's a reason they're coming out with a larger phone.

The iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus are great devices, and I'm sure they
 will
do well. I'm sure a lot of Android users will be trading in their smart
phone for an iPhone 6. I'm not sure I believe social media statements
 though
that 45% of Android users will be turning in their phones to get an iPhone.
The iPhone 6 may help Apple pick up some of the market share they've lost,
but the iPhone 6 may be a game changer for Apple, but it isn't for the
industry, so I doubt they're going to make up all of the market share
 they've lost and then some.

I'm not saying Apple is in trouble or that they're going away any time
 soon.
I could also be completely wrong. I just question the statement that Apple
is brilliant for realizing three years after the Galaxy Note was released
that people wanted bigger screen sizes. IMHO, Samsung seems like the more
innovative company here, since they put out the original Note in 2011 when
everyone said it was too big and wouldn't be successful. Setting a trend is
brilliant; not joining the party late.

It's useable, and iOS 8 is stabil, but you may run into some
 inconveniences.
It's hard for me to tell somebody to go ahead or not because everybody is
different. Keep in mind that bluetooth keyboard support is very bad and if
you are in the habit of manually dialing phone numbers iOS 8 is a pain in
the neck because quite often as you dial one of the numbers just decides to
stick and the DialTone goes on and on. As a minimum you have to bring up
 the
app switcher and throw the phone app out, then try again. Prior to the
Goldmaster I had to actually totally shut down the phone and reboot in
 order
 to stop the DialTone.

Joe,

When I went back to investigate I found my perception of what was going on
was wrong. The increase contrast settings seem to have no effect on the
keyboard color. The keyboard that is presented in the app store, however,
is a different color (dark background/key color with light colored
letters/numbers/symbols) than the standard iOS7 keyboard. The keyboard
presented must be specific to the app. Sorry for the

You can only comment on the main post. Probably the best way to simulate
replying to a specific comment is to tag the person you're replying to in
your comment. This will at least get their attention even if they aren't
paying attention to the main post anymore.

Re: WiFi not working on iphone, but does on my laptop.

2014-08-29 Thread Todd W
When you check in Settings - WiFi are you actually connected to your
network? If you are it may be that your IP address settings are not
correct. In the list of wireless networks flick right on the network in
question and double tap on 'More Info'. In this screen you can choose how
to obtain the network address the phone uses. DHCP is typically what you
want, where the phone gets an address from your router. If it's gotten set
to BOOTP or Manual this could be your issue.

If, on the other hand, you can't even get connected to the wireless network
then there are a number of other things to check, but try the above first.

Many single Bluetooth speakers these days feature the ability to pair
 with a
second for stereo sound. I just got a Soundfreaq Platform 2 BT speaker,
which is stereo, but can be combined with a second Platform for bigger
  sound.

I am wondering if I could find an app that would say power the Soundfreaq
and a different brand model. Any recommendations?

BTW, this Soundfreaq Platform 2 is pretty nice. It is about 13 X 7 X
 5.
It has a mini equalizer for choices of high, normal and low treble sounds
and digital separation. It does have a lot of base, and might be just a
 bit
muffled base for those true audiophiles, but is certainly tolerable to my
normal ear. It can be incredibly loud without distortion. It has two USB
ports for charging cords and 3.5mm auxiliary input. The basic model does
 not
include a rechargeable battery, but I understand you can get one from
Soundfreaq for $50. I am not sure the practicality of this as a portable
device, especially for beach, camping, etc., as it does not have a handle
and does have cloth speaker covering across the front. I paid $120 for
 this
at Target; it was $145 (suggested retail) on Amazon. I have gone through
many devices and not been happy with them for one reason or another, but
this one seems to fit my needs quite nicely.

Thanks for any pointers on the Bluetooth question. My goal is to combine
this Soundfreaq with a bookshelf system in a large space so that I have
sound at either end of a large, long room.

  Thanks!

Thanks David. This probably explains why some folks are not experiencing

iOS 7.1 - First Impressions

2014-03-11 Thread Todd W
Hi All,

Just wanted to share my initial findings about iOS 7.1. I installed it
yesterday on my iPhone 5 with no issues. VO came up on reboot just as it
should have. I notice three things off the bat that had really annoyed me
since the iOS 7.0 upgrade had been fixed. They were: 1) the double screen
locked announcement, 2) the issue where when editing text, say in a
message or e-mail and you inadvertantly tapped somewhere in the text the
cursor would jump to that spot (very frustrating at times!). Prior to iOS
7 when you tapped the edit field VO would read the contents. That's now
been restored in 7.1. Lastly, 3) 7.1 fixed a bug that incorrectly
announced some e-mail senders as being VIP when in fact they were not. I'm
really happy to see these fixes.

I have noticed however that now with 7.1 if you have multiple alerts
displayed on the lock screen VO still has a hard time determining how many
alerts are actually there and will incorrectly announce the number of
alerts. It also seems that since the update if I am on the lock screen and
multiple alerts are displayed with VO reading them if I hit the power
button to turn the display off and lock the screen VO continues to read the
alerts . This will be annoying when you want to quickly silence the phone,
say when in a meeting.

I'd be interested to hear other's findings on the update.

Todd

Ray,

Are you on an iPhone or iPad? If you're on an iPad you can set the side
switch behavior to either mute/unmute or lock/unlock orientation. This is
found in Settings - General - Use side switch to...

Unfortunately this option isn't available on the iPhone it seems. Thelock
orientation option is in the Control Center though, The options are, from
left to right: Airplane Mode, WiFi, Bluetooth,Do Not Disturb, Lock
Orientation. Under this row of toggles is the Brightness control and under
that are the Music controls, then things like Calculator, Clock, Flashlight
are on the bottom row.

Ray,

You can insert punctuation in your dictation by speaking things like

AhhYou're in Settings - Control Center. The only way to access the
actual Control Center to my knowledge is the 3 finger swipe up from the
Home screen or Lock screen, which I know you said was difficult and can
understand your frustration. I would suggest writing to Apple
Accessibility to explain the difficulty. It seems there should definitely
be another option to get to the orientation lock on the iPhone.

Go to the Control Center, either from Settings, or by touching the status
bar and doing a 3 finger
swipe up. If you then flick through the items, there will be a lock
 orientation button which you can
 double tap to lock.

Glad you were able to get it. You may want to research the Assistive Touch
options in the Accessibility settings as well. I've never used it but it
appears you can create custom gestures that maybe could be substituted for

Teresa,

You're right. If you tap and hold at the very bottom center of the screen
and then one-finger swipe up it does reveal the Control Center. I found it
pretty tricky to make happen to begin with, but after a bit of practice I
was able to get fairly consistent.

iOS 7.1 - Passcode Unlock annoyance

2014-03-11 Thread Todd W
Hello All,

I have both an iPhone 5 and iPad now running 7.1. Both devices have a
passcode lock. Once the passcode is entered and the home screen appears VO
announces the letters that were on the last number key in my passcode...for
instance if the last number pressed was 4 it would announce GHI. Can
others confirm this annoyance?

Thanks,

Generic Barcode Reader

2014-02-27 Thread Todd W
Hi All,

Does anyone have a suggestion for a generic barcode reading app that works
well with VO? I'm looking for something that will simply scan a barcode

like barcoded serial numbers or model numbers on items. I'm *not* looking
for a UPC code scanner like Red Laser.

Thanks,

Best PDF reader?

2013-12-09 Thread Todd W
Hi all,

I frequenntly have to access large PDFs. In the native reader, if you move
to another app while reading a PDF and then return to the PDF it seems it
takes you back to the beginning of the document. This is frustrating when
you're in a 600 pade PDF and have to scroll to find where you were. I've
also tried the adobe Reader for iOS but it seems to have it's own
limitations as well, reading an entire page at a time as opposed to say, a
single paragraph on a page. Has anyone had better results with other apps?

Thanks,

Accessible Podcast App - What's your Favorite?

Hi All,

I'd like to get your opinion on which podcast app works best with
VoiceOver. I have been using Casts until they released their new version

is concerned and I need a new podcast manager/player that's more friendly
to VoiceOver. The ideal app needs to be able to download or stream
podcasts independent of iTunes as I don't sync my phone often. Thanks in

Re: Favorites in Contacts - Very Annoying

2013-09-25 Thread Todd W
Anthony,

In the case where the Favorites category is used to bypass the Do Not
Disturb settings you must have the different phone numbers defined as
Favorites. So in my case, I have two entries in Favorites for my wife, one
for her mobile number and one for her work number. That way if I have Do
Not Disturb set and she calls from either number it still comes through.
With the multiple entries in Favorites and with iOS 6 the explicit phone
number was a part of the label for the Favorites list and I could easily
call her mobile or work by double-tapping the correct entry in Favorites.
I believe this kind of situation is what Tom was referring to in his
original post.

whether an entry is for a mobile phone or a land line; all it says is
call. That's not exactly helpful. So I have two questions:
 1. Is there some sort of visual indicator that tells you whether
the favorite is a mobile phone or a land line, and is VoiceOver unable to
 identify it properly?
 2. Is there a setting that I can change to restore the original behavior?

Thanks in advance.

Re: I cannot get the buttons at the bottom of a Safari window to show up consistently.

2013-09-24 Thread Todd W
Daniel is correct. The button bar disappears as you scroll down the
webpage. Another sure-fire way to bring it back is to double-tap the
status bar at the top of the screen with one finger to scroll back to the
top of the webpage. This reveals the button bar.

As the subject might suggest, I am having trouble consistently getting the
buttons like back, forward, share, pages, etc. to show up at the bottom of
a Safari window. In iOS 6, I could very easily gget to them by touching
right above the bottom of the screen. I'm using an OtterBox Defender case,
which makes this extremely easy. Now, however, in iOS 7, the only time I've
been able to consistently find the back button is when opening a new page.
I'm pretty sure that this has something to do with that area of the screen
being hidden until you go near it, but I can't seem to bring it up, no
matter what I do. Any help on this is greatly appreciated.
 Thanks,

VO not reading in message compositionin iOS 7?

2013-09-24 Thread Todd W
Hi All,

In earlier iOS versions when composing a message VoiceOver would read the
contents of the message box while composing if you brought focus to that
field. In iOS 7 it seems to have lost that capability. Is this happening
to others or just something quirky on my iPhone5? I predominantly dictate
messages and even though it still reads the phrase as it inserts it into
the message it won't read the message before you tap the Send button. I
always found this very handy when composing a long message or when I got
distracted and had to return to the message to finish it.

Thanks,

Todd

Re: Calendar Issues

2013-09-24 Thread Todd W
I have to say I do like the new calendar layout better than previous
versions. I do, however, miss the List view of events. That view made it
much easier to go through appointments 'at a glance' for me.

I'm wondering what exactly people are having trouble with in the new
 calendar?

I do personally have things I'd like to see done a bit differently but
depending on what you're after, here are a few tips.

When you open the calendar, the day you have selected will automatically
be the one shown, so that you can very quickly look through everything you
 have on that day.

the Today button at the bottom moves you to Today immediately, but you can
select from the current week (by default) from the days at the top of the
 screen.

YOu can advance by week by doing a three-finger swipe from right to left
and move to the previous week by doing a three-finger swipe from left to
 right.

When you have an event at a particular time during the day, you can
double-tap on that event and it's details will come up and you can edit
some of these as well as bring up the Contact (if any) that invited you,
directly, so that you can immediately call / text / FaceTime etc them.

 .

Does any of this help, or is all of this old news? :)

Hope you're having a great day and talk with y'all soon!

 Smiles,

 Cara :)

The new calendar format has been one of the biggest drawbacks for me
with ios7. My solution, and it isn't 100% satisfactory, was to
purchase VO Calendar and use it instead. The app is ten dollars and
the layout is a bit odd, but it's easier to manage than the native
calendar layout. Also, when you install it, it will ask if it can
access your calendar, Say ok and all your appointments will be copied
 into the VO calendar.

Wish I had a better solution, but there you go.
