I would not at all be surprised if next year's regular iPhone 15 will get the
A16 chip which is now in the 14 Pro and that the newest A17 chip will again
only be in the Pro phones.

Also, Sieghard makes a great point about the regular 14 models since they have
the same chip as the iPhone 13 series, don’t bother with anything less than the
14 pro, or get a discounted 13 pro, or, probably better, wait for the 15 and
see if they do the same dumb—s trick of giving the pro models the new chip and
leaving the previous chip in the non-pro models…

Having said what I said in my previous message I would wait until next year and
buy an iPhone 15 or 15 Pro. It is extremely likely that next year the Lightning
port goes away and a USB-C port is put in its place; whether we'll see Touch Id
again in addition to Face Id is unlikely but not entirely out of the picture
and I certainly won't upgrade my iPhone 11 which works great until next year.

Subject: Any thoughts on the iPhone 14 or 14 Pro?

Good morning, everyone -

I’m seriously considering taking advantage of upgrading my phone. I have the
iPhone 12, which is paid for, free and clear. However, there are a few issues
I’m finding a bit disconcerting with the phone these days. Since I have the
opportunity to at least look at upgrading, I might do that.
I’m with AT
Does anyone have thoughts on either the iPhone 14 or 14 pro? For those who have
either phone, how do you like them?
I’ve never really had issues with any of my phones, and I hope to continue this
streak if I do upgrade.
Also, I’m wondering what is better. Should I go through the Apple Store and get
a trade-in, or should I go through my carrier? I’m still doing all of the
necessary research.
Anyway, thanks for any info you could give me on advantages or disadvantages of
the new iPhone 14.
Jim

2022-10-10 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Why should you have waited? If you need or really want a new phone then that
is when you should get one. You can always wait for the next year's phones if
you think that way. In your case I think you upgraded from an iPhone 8 to a 13
Pro Max which is a significant upgrade. What I don't really understand is when
people upgrade from a 13 Pro to a 14 Pro or even a 12 Pro to a 14 Pro. There
are two technologies which I think I would like to have and that is LiDAR and
Mag Safe charging, but neither I find is critical enough for me to even warrant
an upgrade from my 11 to a 14 Pro. Apart from LiDAR I can't think of a single
thing off the top of my hat which I could do with an iPhone 14 Pro that I can't
do with my 11.

Unless folks have a really old phone, I am recommending everyone wait a year or
two for future upgrades. Yes, the 2023 iPhones will have USBC. It is unclear if
that will only be for the Pros or for the whole lineup. Transfer speeds will
be dramatically faster. I have a 512 GB in storage on my iPhone with a couple
hundred gigs for music.
Transferring these files will take a lot less time. The whole electronics
industry is adopting USBC so it is worth waiting for. The processor on the
iPhone 14 Pro is just eight percent faster than in the 13 Pro. The rumor is
that the iPhone in 2023 or 2024 will have the new generation of microprocessors
that will be much faster and more energy efficient. I am happy to have an
iPhone 13 Mini so I can wait for these innovations while I enjoy the new snazzy
straight side design that started with the iPhone 12.

USB C is a plug style that has been used on Mac computers for a while. It is
becoming more common everywhere. It allows for faster data transfer. It looks
very much similar to the lightning plug, but is slightly larger and has an
opening in it, though you have to be paying close attention to detect it by
touch.
It also has no right way to plug it in; just like lightning plugs so you do not
have to worry about having it oriented correctly.

Thanks for the information, Kelly.
As I was telling someone off list, I normally wouldn't mind waiting for
something better. I'm just at a point right now where if I don't upgrade my
current phone, I'm going to need it looked at, fixed, or replaced.
My current iPhone 12 has begun getting quite warm at times, even when
not in use. At one point, it got down-right hot, and I'd never seen that
before. I even got the message that the battery stopped charging because the
phone had overheated or something.
I'm trying to see what will be the best for me financially. Ultimately
I'd love to simply get the USBC deal on the phone.
Decisions.

It would appear Apple is going to use USBC. Their MagSafe chargers use it,
their AirPods Max cable requires a USBC charger, though the headphones
themselves have the Lightning port, their Macs have had USBC ports for a while
now.
I'm not sure Apple will have a choice if they want to survive in Europe.

But, this is straying off topic so I will stop now.

Jim,

For this reason, I obtain iPhone insurance for 2.5 years from when I purchase
the device. After then, buying a used iPhone makes more sense than paying the
insurance. So far, I never have had to use it. Some credit cards, like the
chase Premier card, offers cell phone insurance that covers theft and out of
warrantee repairs. Your dilemma reminds me of the position I was in with my
windows desktop 10 years ago. My XP was falling apart and I really disliked the
long boot up process that was still present in Windows 7. The upcoming Windows
8 promised a near instant on experience. I decided to go to a computer reseller
who was offering Intel Pentium machines running Windows XP to hold me over
until Windows 8. When the new version of Windows was released, 8 was a disaster
and I waited an additional year for Windows 8.1 when I bought a super speedy
Windows computer. Personally, I would not want to be running around with 512
or a terabyte of memory on my iPhone in five years with the transfer speed of
USB 2, which is the current standard.
The transfer rate is 480 MBPS. USB 4 with USBC will have either a 40 or 80 gig
per second transfer rate, depending on the specification Apple chooses to
implement.

Christopher, the European Union is forcing the issue by requiring all
electronic devices to use USBC. Tony Fadell, who invented the iPod, said the EU
action was necessary at this point because Apple is now a monopoly and someone
needs to force the issue because competition cannot. The question will be
which technology standard Apple will adopt.

hi,
heh, as I have stated a few times on list. I went from a 6+ to a 14 pro.
ifthis roomer turns out to be true I hope they keep USBC to lightning cables
around a while till I upgrade again. I think part of this roomer is rooted
in the EU trying to force apple to change lightning to USBC. I saw a
headline about it in apple news. I am not sure how successful they will be
but, my 14 pro came with a USBC brick to lightning so it probly would not
be a large leap if apple to use USBC insted of lightning. I do not know if
it would make a difference other than USBC being more universal than
lightning. Both ends would be usbc if this turns out to be what apple does.

Does the lightning end slow down charging or something if the brick is USBC?
Just wondering what a difference it would make other htan making apple to
be like other phone makers using USBC charging ports inthe phone and I
assume other divices like tablets.

Having said what I said in my previous message I would wait until
next year and buy an iPhone 15 or 15 Pro. It is extremely likely
that next year the Lightning port goes away and a USB-C port is put
in its place; whether we'll see Touch Id again in addition to Face
Id is unlikely but not entirely out of the picture and I certainly
won't upgrade my iPhone 11 which works great until next year.

Jim,

For this reason, I obtain iPhone insurance for 2.5 years from when I
purchase the device. After then, buying a used iPhone makes more sense
than paying the insurance. So far, I never have had to use it. Some
credit cards, like the chase Premier card, offers cell phone insurance
that covers theft and out of warrantee repairs. Your dilemma reminds
me of the position I was in with my windows desktop 10 years ago. My
XP was falling apart and I really disliked the long boot up process
that was still present in Windows 7. The upcoming Windows 8 promised a
near instant on experience. I decided to go to a computer reseller who
was offering Intel Pentium machines running Windows XP to hold me over
until Windows 8. When the new version of Windows was released, 8 was a
disaster and I waited an additional year for Windows 8.1 when I bought
a super speedy Windows computer. Personally, I would not want to be
running around with 512 or a terabyte of memory on my iPhone in five
years with the transfer speed of USB 2, which is the current standard.
The transfer rate is 480 MBPS. USB 4 with USBC will have either a 40
or 80 gig per second transfer rate, depending on the specification
Apple chooses to implement.

Christopher, the European Union is forcing the issue by requiring all
electronic devices to use USBC. Tony Fadell, who invented the iPod,
said the EU action was necessary at this point because Apple is now a
monopoly and someone needs to force the issue because competition
cannot. The question will be which technology standard Apple will
adopt.

RE: Any thoughts on the iPhone 14 or 14 Pro?

2022-10-08 Thread Carolyn
I know that I intend to upgrade from my 11 to a 14 Pro. I am planning a move,
so will do that afterward, probably in three or four months.

Jim

Re: Any thoughts on the iPhone 14 or 14 Pro?

2022-10-08 Thread Kelly Pierce
Unless folks have a really old phone, I am recommending everyone wait
a year or two for future upgrades. Yes, the 2023 iPhones will have
USBC. It is unclear if that will only be for the Pros or for the whole
lineup. Transfer speeds will be dramatically faster. I have a 512 GB
in storage on my iPhone with a couple hundred gigs for music.
Transferring these files will take a lot less time. The whole
electronics industry is adopting USBC so it is worth waiting for. The
processor on the iPhone 14 Pro is just eight percent faster than in
the 13 Pro. The rumor is that the iPhone in 2023 or 2024 will have the
new generation of microprocessors that will be much faster and more
energy efficient. I am happy to have an iPhone 13 Mini so I can wait
for these innovations while I enjoy the new snazzy straight side
design that started with the iPhone 12.

Hi, Joshua,

I also love my 13 Pro Max. When I play music on it, it has a great sound. I
thought it would take me a long time to use a phone without a Home button, but
I adapted to it very quickly.

Take care.

RE: Any thoughts on the iPhone 14 or 14 Pro?

2022-10-08 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
You'll get the most if you were to sell your iPhone 12 privately.
If you do buy a 14 series phone I would only consider the iPhone 14 Pro,
otherwise you may as well buy an iPhone 13 or 13 Pro which you probably can
find good deals for since the regular iPhone 14 has the same chip as the iPhone
13/13 Pro. Only the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max got the new A16 chip and, as
Richard said, have the liDAR hardware.

Jim

2022-10-08 Thread Tai Tomasi
I got the iPhone 14 Pro and I really like it. The battery life is a huge improvement over my 13 mini. I traded in through Apple and with a carrier deal got $800 off. I found the process of going through Apple using a carrier discount to be very easy.Tai Tomasi, J.D., M.P.A.Email: tai.toma...@gmail.comSent from my iPhone. RE: Any thoughts on the iPhone 14 or 14 Pro?

2022-10-08 Thread Richard Turner
I have no thoughts on the 14 specifically, but the pro models have the LIDAR
which is necessary if you want to take advantage of the door detection feature.

I would check what Apple would give you in a trade-in and compare that with
what you would get through your carrier.

Note, the carriers often build the price of the phone into the plan, so check
pricing carefully.

I have the 13 pro and have no interest in the 14s.
