Re: Major problems streaming internet radio on iPhone 5

2013-10-14 Thread talkradiojames
I listen to talk radio every day on ooTunes.
I have an old 3GS that streams using my wireless router.
The 3GS NEVER drops the stream. I have forgotten about stopping it on
occasion, and it will record for over 12 hours without dropping the stream.
With my iPhone5, ooTunes drops the stream about every 3 minutes or so.
When I set it to stream from WiFi only, it might hold the stream for a
little longer, but it drops a lot.
When I am in the car, and the stream is coming only from a cell tower, it
can hold the stream a very long time (over an hour).
I have emailed ooTunes, called Apple support, my router tech service. No
help.
My conclusion: It is a combination of the iPhone5 hardware and wireless
router.
So, at home I use the 3GS.

 iPhone.

Here's the reality. When placed beside each other on a table and
connected to the exact same WIFI network, streaming the same station
in tandem, my older iPhone 4S can play for hours without any problem.
My 5, on the other hand, constantly buffers, skips, and disconnects
for several seconds. Streaming radio is basically useless on my iPhone
5, because it just doesn't work reliably. I'd say every fifteen to
thirty seconds there's a hiccup in the stream, usually a pause of
 several seconds.

I really don't get where the problem lies, because I've swapped my
phone a couple of times for unrelated issues and I remember having
streaming problems on those other phones too. It doesn't matter what
station I stream, which app I use (Safari, Ootunes, Tunein, or a
number of other radio apps I tried in the app store). Doesn't matter
which WIFI network I'm on, or if I'm on LTE or 3G. The problem still
 persists.

Have set up as a new iPhone, reset all settings, reset network
settings, done a restore in iTunes, and just can't get the problem to
 go away.

I'd would have thought this was a hardware problem, but weirdly, other
data works impeccably. No issues with Skype, iTunes Match, mail, or
even apps like podcast clients--streaming audio that is not live,
works fine. It just seems to be live, streaming audio that's the
 problem.

Does anybody have any idea what could possibly be the problem? Can
anyone confirm whether they can use apps like Ootunes on an iPhone 5
 with zero issues?

RE: Major problems streaming internet radio on iPhone 5

2013-08-21 Thread Jim Noseworthy
Hello folks:

According to information I found on the net, it has to do with a particular
chip found in the iPhone 5. This is a well documented problem with the
iPhone 5 and I, also, returned a unit only to receive a new unit with
exactly the same problem.

Apple does not publically acknowledge this issue but, according to some
information that I've found, it was acknowledged privatly.

In recent updates, Apple has attempted to resolve this problem but with
limited, or no success.

There has been some work-around suggestions, but nothing seems to work very
well at all.

Cheers.

I have posted on this subject before but need to say it again just so you
know this is not the case with all iPhone 5's.

I can stream 320k streams for hours and hours without a single dropout.

I can do this on wifi or lte.

It just works wonderfully!

I only say this to let you know that this is a problem with only some iPhone

Yes that problem I do have grin!

RE: Major problems streaming internet radio on iPhone 5

2013-08-21 Thread Donald Moore
I've been having problems using my 4S both using the At Bat app as well as
iTunes. It's been happening for the last several days. It's occurred on my
own Wi-Fi, as well as the hot spot where I've been receiving my chemo
treatments.

I'm guessing it's a server issue, but it's hard telling.

That's entirely possible, Craig. It's also possible that certain
streams exhibit this behavior while others don't. (But I'd emphasize
that those streams play fine on other devices.)

Far be it for me to say that all iPhone 5 units have this problem. Of
course I have no idea. But whenever I guide somebody through specific
steps, they're always able to reproduce the issue. I've tried four
iPhones myself as I said, and they've all had this issue. And even in
consultation with a senior support advisor at Apple, his iPhone
exhibited the same problem.

Grant, you say whenever I guide somebody through specific
steps, they're always able to reproduce the issue. Would it be too
tiring or vexing for you to post these steps here? Even though I'm
having no problems, I could try to follow them an see what happens.
Perhaps others will do the same. Perhaps you have already tried this
exercise on viphone to no avail. I know this has been a long-standing
problem for some users, and I'm sorry you have found no solution.

Re: Major problems streaming internet radio on iPhone 5

2013-08-14 Thread Donna
Is it possible that your streaming problems are a result of your service
provider??? Or area in which you live??? I have an iPhone 5, my service
provider is ATT, and I live in N. carolina USA. I use TuneIn radio and pandora
on a daily basis with absolutely no problems with streaming. I on occasion use
my iPhone while travelling across my state to attend appointments and while
travelling on vacation. The only time I encounter problems streaming is when
travelling through rural areas. At home I'm mostly connected to wifi and when
out and about I'm connected by 4G LTE

Re: Major problems streaming internet radio on iPhone 5

2013-08-14 Thread Grant Hardy
I've come to the conclusion that this is simply a problem with the
iPhone 5. I've tried no less than four iPhone 5 units and can
successfully reproduce the problem on all of them and I've been able
to get several other users to reproduce the problem as well. My
current iPhone has been tested on T-Mobile in the United States and on
Telus Mobility in Canada as well as multiple WIFI networks and the
problem never completely goes away, though it can be mitigated to a
certain extent. I would say that my current iPhone, which is the new
A1428 pentaband model that was released in April of this year,
performs the best. But the problem is still there at least to a
certain extent.

It's worth noting that apps like Pandora work differently in that they
do not require a constant TCP connection to a specific, live stream.
So it is not really an accurate comparison to streaming using TuneIn
or Ootunes or other apps that stream live radio stations.

lines appearing on photos) anyhow, the replacement iphone solved the camera
issues but is suffering from the same radio streaming issues although I
think it's even worse than before, sometimes, not often mind you, when the
stream stops, the stream won't start again by itself and I have to go to
settings, turn off wifi and turn it back on and restart the Tunein pro app.
This never happened on my previous iphone 5, it at least managed to start
the stream again by itself every time.

When I sent my phone to apple with the camera issue I also flagged this
issue with them also but at the time I was more focused on resolving the
 camera malfunction.

I too have no issues streaming Tunein using my 3G connection, my provider
doesn't support LTE yet so I can't say whether that would work. Seems to be
an iphone wifi issue. I'm going to contact apple again and seek another
replacement as it does appear that some iPhone 5 users don't seem to have
this issue, so that tells me it's possibly a hardware issue and perhaps I
was just unlucky to get two bad iPhones.

I'll let you know how I get on with apple.

Re: Major problems streaming internet radio on iPhone 5

2013-06-15 Thread Eric G
I stumbled on this group because I basically have a similar problem. Not
necessarily with iPhone 5, but my iPod 3rd gen is behaving in the same way,
running IOS 5.1.1. My iPhone 4S doesn't appear to have the problem.
As an added piece of troubleshooting information, I use the jazzradio.com
app, and it conveniently displays the streaming rate while being used.
When the sound drops from jazzradio.com, THE STREAMING GAUGE STILL
INDICATES A CONTINUED STREAM - but I can't hear anything! This would mean
that the stream is coming in, but is not being played by the sound
interface. This would point to a problem between the IOS sound interface
and the app.
I can normally play a stream for an initial 15-30 minutes, and it will then
start dropping more and more frequently, and will rapidly come to a point
where it will drop after 1-2 minutes. To re-start, all I have to do is
pause the stream on the app, and play to hear again.

Hopefully this post will help with the troubleshooting!

Eric

Joanie and others, Recently someone suggested that I go in to settings, sounds,
and change lock sounds. I did so and have had no problems. Let me repeat, if
you go in to settings, sounds, and then most of the way down to lock sounds,
change it to off and this may, I say may eliminate your problem.

I now am fairly confident that this is an iPhone-specific issue.
Nearly everyone I know who has an iPhone 5 has been able to replicate
my streaming issues when I walk them through how to do it.

No trouble with MLB radio streaming.

 Hi all,

For a few weeks now I've been trying to ignore this problem, or chalk
it up to an unreliable data connection, problem with the station I'm
trying to listen to, or some other thing which isn't the fault of my

2013-02-01 Thread Grant Hardy
Hello list,

Unfortunately it seems that I was a bit hasty in concluding that all
my radio streaming woes were addressed with iOS 6.1. It does seem,
however, that iOS 6.1 has significantly improved things. But
connections still drop and it is a little more tempermental than my 4S
and other equipment.

I really don't want to conclude that it's my phone which is defective,
and the fact is, since my previous iPhone 5 behaved exactly the same
way, and as others on the list are reporting similar issues, it seems
that this isn't the case.

The trouble is, the symptoms are not consistent so it's very very
difficult to diagnose what could be going on.

I sure wish there was a way to get to the bottom of this.

Anyone have any ideas how to diagnose?

RE: Major problems streaming internet radio on iPhone 5

2013-02-01 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Grant,

I assume you are having these streaming issues when you are streaming over
WiFi? Have you tried to turn off WiFi and stream over 3G? I know you may not
want to use up your data, but just as a test? Also, if you have a PC or
laptop that is plugged into your router instead of being connected
wirelessly, do you have these problems streaming say a radio station in
iTunes?

I am asking all this because I wonder if your router could be the problem. I
recently bought 2 new Netgear routers and the WiFi on these is horrible to
the point that even though I am past the 30-day return period I have ordered
another router and will most likely just end up having to sell these on
eBay. I am not sure if it is horrible because of what's around me, but I had
Netgear work on these and try to configure them and especially the one at my
business is basically unuseable with a WiFi device, I can't even play a
video over my local network let alone stream anything on a WiFi connected
device.

RE: Major problems streaming internet radio on iPhone 5

2013-01-31 Thread Jim Noseworthy
Hello:

Have you downloaded IOS 6.1? It seems to have resolved much of the problem.

I'd say 25% of the time it buffers, it disconnects, at least that's what the
phone announces and I get the connecting advertising one gets when first
connecting a stream.Sometimes it just buffers and seems to get stuck there.

I'll check out the ooTunes recording suggestion.

Streaming with LTE works flawlessly. I haven't known about the locking
issue, but I'm sure I've done it both ways and it's been a problem. I'll try
to pay attention to this.

This is my 3rd iPhone 5, all for this reason.

I've been on the phone to AppleCare 2 times, both for about 2 hours doing
various things, mostly backing up, restoring, doing factory resets, etc.
They've texted a link to let them look at hardware issues, but the phone
hardware appears solid.

I may have the opportunity to go to an Apple Store 75 miles away this
weekend for them to play with it directly. We'll see.

I can't wait until I get this fixed and can get rid of my iPodTouch, but
right now, that's the main way I listen to the radio if I want to capture
the content I'm interested in.

Thanks.

That's very very unfortunate. Does it actually disconnect or does it simply
buffer a lot? In Ootunes after listening to a stream, if you go into the
recent recordings list is there only one recording or several? This will
tell you whether your stream is disconnecting or simply buffering. Also,
does it seem to cause problems if you lock then unlock the phone? It turns
out that this is a problem (i.e.
connections dropping when phones are unlocked) many others seem to be having
as I've seen on other forums.

Also, what happens if you turn WIFI off and force your phone to use LTE or
3G only? When I was having streaming problems, this helped a lot.

I would recommend investing time discussing this problem with Apple
technical support as they need to know there are people still having
streaming issues. While this obviously isn't the most popular feature on
iPhones, I imagine it's still used by a significant number of iPhones and
you should not be having these problems. Have you had yor phone swapped out
yet? I seem to remember you saying you had.

Ah, right. I suspected it would work flawlessly on your carrier's
network. Of course, that's not an ideal way to listen but it does jive
with my understanding that there are plenty of WI-FI issues on the
iPhone 5. What I don't understand is why some people are experiencing
them, but not others. I was testing this with a couple people on list
a while back on iOS 6 and they could definitely reproduce my results.
It was fixed for some people on iOS 6.0.1 but not for others. Now with
iOS 6.1, it's completely cleared up for me but not for you. This is
curious. I hope Apple can diagnose this for you. They should be able
to provide you with a device that works correctly.

You can also go into settings, tune in and change the buffering time. I think
if I remember right, the default is like 5 seconds and I changed it to 10 and
no more problems. Then I ditched the DSL and went with cable and changed it

  Hi Reg,

Is your Apple TV connected to your WiFi or do you have it connected to your
router with an Ethernet cable?

If you use WiFi there could be any number of reasons for the dropouts from a
slow internet connection to a bad WiFi connection, interference from other
wireless devices etc. I had a few dropouts on my Apple TV when I had it
connected to my WiFi, as soon as I plugged it in it was not a problem any more
which means the problem was with my WiFi and not the internet connection/speed.

ooTunes, iHeart, TuneIn, and Wunder Radio all do the same thing. My iPHone 4S

Hi Reg,

Is your Apple TV connected to your WiFi or do you have it connected to your
router with an Ethernet cable?

If you use WiFi there could be any number of reasons for the dropouts from a
slow internet connection to a bad WiFi connection, interference from other
wireless devices etc. I had a few dropouts on my Apple TV when I had it
connected to my WiFi, as soon as I plugged it in it was not a problem any
more which means the problem was with my WiFi and not the internet
connection/speed.

Sieghard

Hi Grant. I just finished reading all the threads about the streaming issue

different networks, both with and without passwords. Sirius and Slacker

My iPHone 4S works perfectly. Thanks, and I am curious if you ever got this

RE: Major problems streaming internet radio on iPhone 5

2013-01-26 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Reg,

You should also do a speedtest on your internet connection. The best sight
is www.speedtest.net, but unfortunately it uses a lot fo flash. It works for
me to use the second button in the main flash area, I believe it says
Unlabelled 7, but if that doesn't work you might need sighted help with the
site.

Not so sure about the WiFi except that if you have a laptop you can go to
Network and Sharing Centre, click on Change Adapter settings, then find your
WiFi adapter, right click on it and select Status. This will display the
speed with which you are connected. Monitor that for a few minutes, you have
to use the Jaws cursor if you use Jaws that is to read it.

Alternatively you can just spend $8 or $10, maybe less, and buy yourself a
long enough network cable. Just plug your Apple TV in and watch some stuff
and see if you get drop-outs, if you don't then you know it's the WiFi.

Re: Major problems streaming internet radio on iPhone 5

2013-01-25 Thread Grant Hardy
Scott and list,

To be honest, I wonder whether it is in fact some problem other than
streaming which is taking place here. I've heard speculation that
perhaps there is a flaw in the iPhone 5 relating to switching between
WIFI and cellular data, but have no idea. Apps like iTunes Match,
Slacker Radio, Pandora, and so forth don't need a constant data
connection to work; but with streaming radio, you need a constant
connection to the server and if that connection drops for a split
second, you're going to notice it.

I did some testing with at least one person on this list a while back
and we could produce the same result. Streaming really does seem to be
more reliable on the 4S, but I don't have any scientific tests to back
that up--often, the 5 works just fine. Whatever's going on, it must be
a very subtle thing and I very much hope it's software-based, rather
than hardware.

slow internet connection to a bad WiFi connection, interference from other
wireless devices etc. I had a few dropouts on my Apple TV when I had it
connected to my WiFi, as soon as I plugged it in it was not a problem any
more which means the problem was with my WiFi and not the internet
connection/speed.

Curiously enough, I started a thread about this some time ago and got very
little interest in getting to the root of the problem.

I have the same drop out issues with my Iphone 4S with Tune in Radio and am
at a loss to determine the cause of it. I added Apple TV in December and am
having some of the same interuptions when Previewing Movies!

Anyone else have these experiences?

Anyone have a fix that has worked?

Hi Grant. I just finished reading all the threads about the streaming issue
on an iPhone 5. I have tried everything you have, and I still can't stream
for more than 30 seconds. I've had three phones, and I've tried them on
different networks, both with and without passwords. Sirius and Slacker
work, but ooTunes, iHeart, TuneIn, and Wunder Radio all do the same thing.
My iPHone 4S works perfectly. Thanks, and I am curious if you ever got this
resolved.

Re: Major problems streaming internet radio on iPhone 5

2012-12-16 Thread David Chittenden
This situation specifically points to a conflict with your brother's router.
This problem is not specific to Apple. It is why router manufacturers release
updated firmware packages. The solution is to have your brother download and
update the current firmware update from the router manufacturer's website.

That is a question for which I still don't have a clear answer, but I
suppose it could be anything--an incompatibility with the specific
router or firmware I'm using, a difference in how the 4S is connecting
to my router versus the 5 (i.e. I'm not sure which Wireless-N
frequencies my router is offering in mixed NG mode which is what I was
using, but it's possible that one is connecting in N-mode and one is
connecting in G-mode which is making a difference), or simply my

router is going, and that there are issues as the 5 is switching
between WIFI and cellular data. I also listen to a number of
commercial U.S. radio stations, and I have a feeling some of them may
be throttling/blocking the connection. I say that because I discovered
that one of my favourite stations is suddenly blocking my carrier's IP

Re: Major problems streaming internet radio on iPhone 5

2012-12-12 Thread Grant Hardy
Sorry, the last part of my message was not clear--I am in Canada, so
this is why American stations may be blocking certain IP ranges that I
am within. It's all due to higher royalties that they have to pay
artists, I believe, if they want their streams to be accessible
internationally.

Re: Major problems streaming internet radio on iPhone 5

2012-12-10 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu

Hello.

I have an I phone 5 and have no problems streaming internet Radio.

Kawal.

On 10 Dec 2012, at 09:03 AM, Grant Hardy grantha...@gmail.com wrote:

 Hi all,

For a few weeks now I've been trying to ignore this problem, or chalk
it up to an unreliable data connection, problem with the station I'm
trying to listen to, or some other thing which isn't the fault of my

2012-12-10 Thread Grant Hardy
Thanks for the reply. I really don't know what to do, I can't imagine
this is a hardware issue but on the other hand, it's undeniably an
issue of some kind. I hate to get yet another swap; this is my third
iPhone 5 already! Maybe I'm unlucky, as since taking the plunge and
getting an iPhone 5, I've had lots of problems. :(

 Hi all,

For a few weeks now I've been trying to ignore this problem, or chalk
it up to an unreliable data connection, problem with the station I'm
trying to listen to, or some other thing which isn't the fault of my

2012-12-10 Thread Grant Hardy
I'm sad to say that I've tried this and the problem persists. On my 4S
I used to schedule radio streams to come on in the morning and wake me
up. I simply can't do that on my iPhone 5 because they don't play
reliably--they cut out at least once a minute.

Any other suggestions anyone? Do you guys suppose this could actually
merit another swap? I just can't imagine this to be a hardware
problem; on the other hand, I can't think what else it could be.

If I do another swap it'll effect my eligibility to have my phone
unlocked through my carrier.

The only other possibility I can think of, and it is a long shot, is that the
device drivers in your router may be older and should be updated. If updating
your router to the latest firmware doesn't fix the problem, it is most likely
your iPhone. Incidentally, I do not have any problems playing streams on my

I have that problem with the latest app upgrade from TuneIn Radio Pro. It
worked fine on my iPHone 5 until that upgrade. The older app still on my iPod

Subject: Major problems streaming internet radio on iPhone 5

Hi all,

For a few weeks now I've been trying to ignore this problem, or chalk
it up to an unreliable data connection, problem with the station I'm
trying to listen to, or some other thing which isn't the fault of my

My only thought is that you may want to check the firewall settings on your

Yep, I'm thinking it's a problem with my iPhone 5. The strange thing
is, I've swapped my 5 for an unrelated issue and the older iPhone 5
exhibited the exact same problem. So if it's a hardware problem of
some kind, then I coincidentally would have had to get two iPhone 5s
with the same problem, which is definitely not impossible of course
but a bit of a coincidence.

I'm giving Apple Care a call now and will update with any resolution;
should anybody have any other ideas I'd be happy to hear them.

Re: Major problems streaming internet radio on iPhone 5

2012-12-10 Thread Grant Hardy
Hi all,

I called Apple today and mentioned that I'm having streaming issues on
my iPhone 5 that don't occur on my 4S, and that are independent of the
app, stream, or network I'm using.

After escalating to a senior advisor, the man told me that Apple
doesn't support third-party apps or websites and that's pretty much
all they can say. I don't know really what to think. While these are
definitely third-party apps and websites, I seem to have found a clear
issue that doesn't exist on my older 4S. I realize it may be difficult
to support, but I didn't really expect that reply.

I suppose my only option now is taking my baby into the Apple Store,
but I'm not sure what that will do. I've pretty much lost the ability
to stream internet radio, since getting an iPhone 5.

When I got my IPhone 5 in October, I installed TuneIn radio, with very
disappointing results. Not only did I have the problems described, it
wouldn't even play most things in stereo, that were in stereo. I
uninstalled it, and put Ootunes on, with better results. But the latest
update to TuneIn radio works wonderfully. I don't get it as to why the
former TuneIn worked so poorly.

issue, but with different configuration of Hardware, software versions and
Network architecture.
I have an older Tune in App and an IPhone 4S. I posted this issue six
months ago and it has recently become more problematic.

I have that problem with the latest app upgrade from TuneIn Radio Pro. It
worked fine on my iPHone 5 until that upgrade. The older app still on my
iPod rth Gen works fine, side-by-side as you describe. TuneIn devs
supposedly looking into it. Are you trying to stream with TuniIn?

Subject: Major problems streaming internet radio on iPhone 5

Hi all,

For a few weeks now I've been trying to ignore this problem, or chalk
it up to an unreliable data connection, problem with the station I'm
trying to listen to, or some other thing which isn't the fault of my

Grant
