2013-04-22 Thread Fred Olver
Actually, folks, I have asked a friend of mine a former Industrial Arts
teacher in a public school district to take a look at my soon-to-be here
standscan and see what improvements we could make in it and what the cost
would be to do so.

I doubt if there's a patent on the product.

Mind you, I find it tricky getting the battery connected with this

Hello Annie,

To open the 9 V battery holder, place your thumb on the top surface with the
cable towards your wrist and slide it towards the cable. There is a sliding
switch on the under side of the holder to switch it on and off.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: StandScan Pro is broken.

2013-04-20 Thread Sandratomkins
Annie,

After such a short time, I think you should contact the StandScan people
and tell them. The contact between the cable and the lights themselves is
delicate and needs strengthening, in my opinion.

Meanwhile, if scanning text, try text grabber and turn on the flash, it is
one of the tabs at the top of the screen, it will help illuminate the box. If
scanning for bar codes, using RedLaser, I think you can do the same.

Hope you get sorted.

Sandy.

Re: StandScan Pro is broken.

2013-04-20 Thread Sandratomkins
Hallo again Annie,

I strongly suspect that it is the connection between the cable and the
lights themselves as mine too is iffy.

As I am also awaiting a replacement for the same reason, i just asked my
practical partner to take a good look at what is happening.

These are his findings and recommendations:

1. There is too much movement possible at the join of 2 delicate wires to the
lights and the, much more heavy duty, cable. This should really be solid state.
He suggests...

Iether the cable should be stapled/clamped in some way throught the
carbaord to make sure that movoment at this point is eliminated, or that the
round rubber collar that is on the end of the cable should be something with
flat sides so that it could be strongly glued to the cardboard.

In short: this is a definite weakness and would seriously impinge upon the
portability of the StandScan pro. However, as many have found, when it works,
it works very well for us, and so is worth going through some teething
problems, but they do need sorting.

Harry and his team have proved themselves to be very responsive to their
customer base and so, I am feeling confident that this problem can be sorted.

Meanwhile, Annie, rather than risk repetition, why not hang on a bit to see
if they can improve the design?

Best, Sandy.

it can take up to a month to get it to Denmark.

Has anyone used the 9V battery holder, will the lights be a little hot when

2013-04-20 Thread Sandratomkins
Hi Annie,

I have mine in front of me,
If you hold it with the cable away from you and can feel the screw thing
underneath, just use your thumb to press on the top of the box near to the end
nearest you, and slide, the whole top slides and comes off. You can then just
slide it back on again when the battery is in place.

Mind you, I find it tricky getting the battery connected with this holder,
plus, I don't think this is your problem, I am sure it is the connection to the
lights themselves and so, using the battery rather than the mains will not make
any difference. probably, if you connect the mains adaptor, and just juggle the
cabe a bit the lights will come on, but even if they do and you can detect them
with either a light detector or by the heat, there is no guarantee that they
will stay on. Sorry about this.

just slide it back on again when the battery is in place.

Mind you, I find it tricky getting the battery connected with this holder,
plus, I don't think this is your problem, I am sure it is the connection to
the lights themselves and so, using the battery rather than the mains will
not make any difference. probably, if you connect the mains adaptor, and
just juggle the cabe a bit the lights will come on, but even if they do and
you can detect them with either a light detector or by the heat, there is no
guarantee that they will stay on. Sorry about this.

Re: StandScan Pro is broken.

2013-04-20 Thread Sandratomkins
Hi Annie,

Please ignore my or anyone else's reference to a screw. You do not need to
unscrew anything. Hold the holder in your hand with the cable away from you.
The little square switch should be underneath.
Use your thunb, placed on the top side at the end nearest you and press
slightly.
Then slide your thumb together with the top surface of the box, toward you.
It will slide right off. It doesn't require a lot of pressing, it is only a
matter of pressing on the right surface and at the right end.

I also couldn't get mine to open and had to be shown. Once done, it was
easy peasy!

However, I have to stress that I don't think this will be the answer to
your problems. If you are not sure if it is a matte of supply as apposed to the
connection, try it with the mains adaptor. If you can't see the light, leave it
on for a while, the lights will get warm and you will be able to feel it.

The weakness is at the joint twixt the lights and the cable. There are two
delicate wires and it is these that begin by slightly disconnecting, giving an
intermittent supply of electricity, and which, finally, as with mine, come
adrift entirely! I think that this connection should be made solid by, in some
way, fixing the top of the cable to the box, so that there can be no play of
movement at that weak point. I am going to try and find a way to reconnect mine
and glue the cable to the lid, but will need the good intentions of my partner
to do this. If it works, I will send to the list how to do it and, perhaps, if
people have access to people with enough skill, they can get theirs
strengthened before they break.

This is a pity, but I have faith in the StandScan Pro people and, in
particular, Harry, to get to grips with this one.

Keep smiling, Sandy.

Re: StandScan Pro is broken.

2013-04-20 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen
Hi.

In fact I had to screw out a screw a little one, ok I did not have the right
screwdriver, so I used my kitchen knife, not good to the knife and the screw,
but it came of, and I could suddenly open the box. I was happy and ran into
town to get a 9V battery. I have tried to put the battery in the holder, and
hold it in place, assemble it with my standscan, and there came light, so it
must be the the power adapter. Ok I feel a little stupid I have to admit,
because my next problem, is that I can not assemble the battery holder with a
battery in it, but without a battery no problem, and how on earth do you make
sure, the battery will be in the right place. I think of finding a peace of
cardboard, put the batteri en place, and put the cardboard in the holder, so
the battery will stay in place, and when forget about the lid, but I am not
very saticefied, because normally I have no problems doing such things.

Cheers Annie.

Hi Annie,
I would suggest sending a message to Harry about your problem.

The only way they will know about issues is if they are told about problem

I’m waiting the arrival of a new 12v adapter. the first one sent was damaged

Harry was very helpful when I explained the problem.

Re: StandScan Pro is broken.

2013-04-19 Thread Eileens Misrahi

Hello,

I am sorry that this happened to you. A couple of weeks ago, I notice that the
lights were flickering. I checked the connection and made sure to treat the
StandScan with care. I keep it assembled all the time because of the fragil
materials used and the fact that one of the cover on one of the magnets has
come off. I just replaced it with another label to cover it. I agree with you
that if this StandScan pro breaks, I will definitely purchase another one. It's
a terrific when I am working at a client's home and I need to scan something.

Actually, my stand scan showed up with a cut wire. This meant that I could not
connect it and get any output from the lights. I did email Harry and he is
sending me a replacement without the accessories of course. I am waiting out
arrival, so I would encourage you to do the same thing.

Re: StandScan Pro is broken.

2013-04-19 Thread Annie Skov Nielsen
Hi.

Yes I have contacted Harry. The problem is that I need sighted assistance to
figure out what exact is wrong, is it the adapter or the lights, and nobody has
time for that at the moment. My 12V battery holder is very late in the post.
The sad thing is that I am sure, that I will need a new standscan, and it can
take up to a month to get it to Denmark.

Has anyone used the 9V battery holder, will the lights be a little hot when
using that, maybe I can use that for figuring out what's wrong.

Best regards Annie.

This is jus a thought. Do you have an app Light Detector. If you are totally
blind; this app could give you feedback if any light is being produced. I have
this on my iPhone4. I also have a light detector on my qstantd a lone color
identifier that gives me audio feedback. Give it a try. It may be able to begin
trouble shooting the problem. HTH.
