OK when I go into my iCloud settings it says find my iPhone is active on this
phone. What does that mean if I did not go get the app from the app store?

My mistake, I meant find my iPhone, actually, so yes, what I said stands. In
order for someone to locate the phone, or if you want to locate it using
another iOS device, you do need the app from the app store.

I didn't mean to say find my friends at first.

Paul,

That's not 100% true, for Find My Friends.

It will ask you if you want to set that up, but in order to locate it, you
do need the app.

When you set up the iCloud account, it will ask you if you want it; you do
not have to go to the app store to get it.

It gets easier.

The phone should let you update it without iTunes since you are on wifi.

It may restart after the update.

If you don't have iCloud set up, it may ask you to do that; I would do
that so that your phone will back up to the cloud.

Also you should be asked about installing the find my iPhone app which I
would do in case the phone is lost.

It is not necessary to have this app installed in order for the feature to
work. As long as you have turned on the find my iPhone feature in settings this
will work if your iPhone should ever go missing. The only reason to have the

Subject: Re: Up dating iOS?

When you set up the iCloud account, it will ask you if you want it; you do
not have to go to the app store to get it.

I've only had my phone since August; I've asked plenty of questions on here.

It gets easier.

Thanks, Paul. I thought all of this could be done from the phone itself. I
have to keep studying here, but we'll get there for sure. I will definitely
look for that app for the sake of protection, though, knock on wood, I
haven't lost a cell phone yet and have no intention of doing so any time

Thanks for the help.

have not done anything at all with the iPhone and my PC. Do I need to

Go into settings on your phone and you should see something that says IOS
update, or something like that. Make sure that the phone is plugged into AC

Re: Up dating iOS?

2012-07-03 Thread Christopher Chaltain
True, but just to be clear, you don't need iTunes or your PC to setup
your iPhone or download anD IOS update, which I think is what everyone
is saying here. I didn't hook my iPhone to a PC or bring up iTunes for
months after I got my iPhone. The only reason I ended up doing it is
because I wanted to backup my iPhone before jail breaking it, and I
didn't want to use iCloud for that. While I had it hooked up, I did also
copy a bunch of music over to my iPhone, just to have it available to me
when I didn't have wifi access. I know I could have used Ubuntu One
Music and cached the music I wanted to download, but it seemed simple
enough to just let iTunes copy over the music I wanted on my phone.

Paul and Daniel,

Thank you both for your information and offer to help. The iPhone 4 S is my
first iPhone and I have had it for just about a month. There are parts of
using it which are very intuitive: others for which I have had help: and I
am definitely still in the process of learning. I have the Anna Dresner book
from NBP and the Missing Manual book, and I will get there eventually I am
sure.

I am just an old retired lady who likes to keep learning new things and ways
to do old things.

Smiles to all,

Re: Up dating iOS?

2012-07-03 Thread James Mannion
The update is going to be under settings and then general and a few
menu items down in general is software update. It will guide you
through. Where it comes to the screen where you have to agree to the
terms though it may cause you concern if you are not use to the fact
that voiceover sometimes goes away there for a few seconds. I think
it's because it loads a large amount of text and voiceover has never
been good at handeling very large blocks of text. I think it would be
about impossible to actually get voiceover to read it if you even
wanted to actually read teh text there. After it hangs it comes back
enough to get to the button you need at the bottom of the screen, but
lags a lot and is unresponsive until you get past that screen.

The phone should let you update it without iTunes since you are on wifi.

It may restart after the update.

If you don't have iCloud set up, it may ask you to do that; I would do that
so that your phone will back up to the cloud.

Also you should be asked about installing the find my iPhone app which I
would do in case the phone is lost.

  Subject: Up dating iOS?

I notice that under settings, I have a note that I need to update my iOS.
I have not done anything at all with the iPhone and my PC. Do I need to
download something from ITunes first to then proceed? Could someone tell me how
to proceed. I am still reading, but have not gotten to that point in the book
just yet because my iPhone was set up somewhat for me at the store. I did
manage to get my WiFi and the iPhone working.

Any tips will be greatly appreciated.

  Dianne
