Re: And So It Begins: Does Anyone Know How to Buy iPhone 14Pro Max with a Physical SIM Tray from within the United States?
Hi Sieghard, I remember the days when one needed to go to a phone store to have them cut the full size sim card to the Nano sim size. My first experience was in 2012 in Jordan. When the store tech told me he is going to cut the sim card, I got very nervous.somehow I thought that he may screw up things. But truthfully, my experience with using an e-sim for the last three years is very positive. When I setup my 14 pro last night I was nervous that the transfer of the e-sim from my old phone to the new one may fail, and thus I will have no phone service to call the help and support number. Then I was happily surprised by the ease the e-sim transfer went. Hi Chris, I remember when the iPhone 5S first came out which had the Nano SIM that I went to the Philippines and had a really hard time finding a Nano SIM since most of the carriers and devices still used full-size SIM's or Micro SIM's. I ended up finding a place where they told me that a Micro SIM can actually be cut to fit a Nano SIM tray and that is what they did, but when technologies change there is always a period of a couple of years when things might not be quite as one would like, certainly keeping your old phone for travel will solve your issue. I think, however, that many carriers in many countries will offer e-SIM options because honestly it is such a superior system that I wonder why nobody came up with it years ago. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of Cris Ali Sent: Friday, October 21, 2022 7:38 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: And So It Begins: Does Anyone Know How to Buy iPhone 14Pro Max with a Physical SIM Tray from within the United States? Here is an article that may help. Link to web page is at the end. What do eSIMs mean for switching network? using phone This is perhaps the key advantage of eSIMs. As it stands switching networks can be fiddly and time-consuming, but eSIMs look set to change all that. Because they are rewritable, you can essentially change networks as you please if your carrier supports the tech. Best of all, you can store more than one plan on a smartphone's eSIM (although you can only use one at a time), so you can chop and change depending on where you are in the world. The hope is that eSIMs will make switching seamless, without the usual fuss of phone calls, demands for PAC numbers and waiting for the switch to take place. EE is offering dedicated QR codes which can be scanned to activate eSIM–based accounts. Head of eSIM Strategy at Sim Local, Gary Waite, said: "Switching networks today means having to get hold of a new SIM card, either by visiting a retail shop or waiting for one to arrive in the post. Then, it means physically removing the old SIM card from the device (and locating that special tool or bending out a paperclip) then inserting the new one - hoping the new SIM card is the right size for the device! All these steps are tedious enough to put many people off switching networks at all. "eSIM turns all of the above into a few simple menu taps. And whilst phones can typically only hold one SIM card, an eSIM-enabled phone can hold several eSIM plans at the same time, with the user easily able to switch between them. "Some networks were worried about the advent of eSIM because they felt that churn would rise as a result of the ease of switching. As a matter of fact, customers who look to switch to eSIMs will still need to adhere to pre-pay and post-pay contracts. "One key benefit for the consumer with eSIM is when they travel abroad. They can now download a local SIM plan after they arrive at their destination (or even before they get on the plane). As nearly all eSIM-enabled phones also support dual-SIM technology, they can benefit from low cost data and still receive calls from their friends and family on their home number." Which networks support eSIMs? iphone deal networks Major UK networks like EE, VMO2, Vodafone and Three all support eSIMs in some format – although Vodafone's eSIM efforts are still limited to iPad and Apple Watch contracts. What are the other advantages that eSIMs offer? In terms of current devices, the biggest draw of eSIMs is being able to quickly add a second telephone number to go alongside that's attached to your main SIM card. That means that you can have two phone numbers on a single device, which is very handy if you have separate business and personal lines but don’t want to lug around a second phone all the time. Then there’s the added bonus for travellers. While cheap roaming is becoming increasingly prevalent, often it pays to have a local number if you’re in a different location for a longer period of time. eSIMs mean you can activate a local line on your device without having to go to a local provider and arrange a price plan. If your eSIM uses a different network to your standard SIM, you can easily switch between the two. This is especially useful if data coverage is poor on one but not the other. On the latest iPhones, you can assign one SIM as the primary line for services like FaceTime and iMessage, while using the other as a secondary SIM for basics such as calls. >From a design perspective, eSIMs also mean that phones should become even >slimmer, with no need for a SIM tray. The chips themselves are much smaller than the cards currently used in most phones, leaving mobile manufacturers space to either trim the size of handsets or add other essentials, such as larger batteries. As you might expect, Gary Waite of Sim Local sees lots of benefits to eSIMs. According to him, "The SIM card, although it has progressively shrunk in size over the years (mini-SIM to micro-SIM to nano-SIM) is still quite a large component in a mobile device – too large for smaller devices like smartwatches and other wearables. eSIM reduces the hardware requirement down to a chip less than 2mm, therefore opening the door to a whole new range of small device form factors. "Even in smartphones, real-estate inside the device is incredibly valuable, and the space taken up by the SIM card can be used for other purposes, including a bigger battery. Many will remember Apple ditching the headphone socket in the iPhone 7 for that very reason. Therefore, removal of the SIM tray brings new opportunity space, not to mention the additional advantage of device waterproofing. "It’s not just consumer devices that benefit either, eSIM solves many problems in the world of IoT (Internet of Things). Consider a smart meter manufacturer, deploying millions of electricity meters across the country. Today, each of these units will have a SIM

This is exactly what I was thinking. Although I am a fan of switching sim cards to play with other phones, I do imagine that someone will come up with a way of easily transferring an ESim from one phone to another. Question is would this be a user accessible possibility? I have no idea but I imagine some resourceful hacker type person will come up with a way. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of Sieghard Weitzel Sent: Thursday, October 20, 2022 12:34 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: And So It Begins: Does Anyone Know How to Buy iPhone 14Pro Max with a Physical SIM Tray from within the United States? I understand why people who make a living reviewing products have multiple phones and want to transfer a SIM from one device to another a lot, but I never understood why somebody would want to spend all that money to buy 2 or 3 high-end phones and use one this day or this week and another the next. And if all you have to do is transfer your e-SIM from your old iPhone to your new one during the setup process of your new phone it would be just as easy peasy. I understand why people who make a living reviewing products have multiple phones and want to transfer a SIM from one device to another a lot, but I never understood why somebody would want to spend all that money to buy 2 or 3 high-end phones and use one this day or this week and another the next. I would venture a guess and say that this is a pretty small minority among phone owners. I haven't really read up on this, but I understand that transferring an e-SIM from an old phone to a new one is a pretty easy and straight forward thing. I actually switched to an e-SIM on my iPhone 11 because I wanted the physical SIM tray to be available for when I travel to the Philippines with my wife. I haven't bought a new phone since then so I didn't have to transfer said e-SIM. Re: And So It Begins: Does Anyone Know How to Buy iPhone 14Pro Max with a Physical SIM Tray from within the United States?
Sieghard and all, To be fair, I think this thread is actually relevant in that there have been other discussions here about accessibility / bugs between iOS versions where someone might actually feel like they want to move a sim to another phone running a different OS for accessibility reasons. So I personally am finding this topic super useful and informative. Even for the accessibility of the physical process of switching sim cards that some folks may not have done before; that kind of discussion would also be appropriate here. For myself, in using different phones for writing / testing software, I'll occasionally switch sim cards but as has been said, that sort of situation is not for everyone. Anyway, regardless, the whole topic of esim vs sim can be valuable here, I think. Just my thoughts, and thanks for such a great discussion. Cheers! Anyways, if there is an easy way to transfer an e-SIM between 2 or 3 devices whenever one wants to do so then the argument about the physical SIM becomes a mute point. From the little I did read all it may take is a QR code from your carrier and then to scan said QR code to transfer the e-SIM and before I would moon over the lack of a physical SIM I would certainly want to inform myself as to how easy or not it is to switch e-SIMs between the devices I have. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of chrisjudge1...@gmail.com Sent: Thursday, October 20, 2022 1:00 AM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: And So It Begins: Does Anyone Know How to Buy iPhone 14Pro Max with a Physical SIM Tray from within the United States? Apple makes six variants of each version of the iPhone 14 lineup. The different variants have unique cell phone frequencies for the region of the phone. For example, American cell phone carriers use frequencies used in no other part of the world. Outside the big metro areas, carriers support fewer frequencies and in some rural areas only one or two. While most people won’t notice much of a difference on a two-week vacation, it could be the case where everyone around you has signal but you in a given place because you have many fewer frequencies to use on your device. Already on my carrier, staff becomes upset when people swap SIM cards with different phones. That’s because network services are attached to the unique serial number on the phone. For example, 5G network services and frequencies are made available to devices registered to have 5G technology. eSIM is the future except in totalitarian regimes like the People’s republic of China, where freedoms are limited. It maybe perfectly reasonable as far as it goes, but apart from Mark being the list moderator the question also has little or nothing to do with the purpose of this list which is about the iPhone's accessibility features and physical SIM or e-SIM do not factor into accessibility. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of Malcolm Parfitt Sent: Wednesday, October 19, 2022 5:19 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: And So It Begins: Does Anyone Know How to Buy iPhone 14Pro Max with a Physical SIM Tray from within the United States? Then you should not support Apple by buying a phone which does not meet your requirements. Maybe if enough people do this Apple will put a SIM tray into the iPhone 15 again although I personally probably wouldn't hold my breath. It would seem that e-SIM is where ?Apple thinks the world is going or maybe where they should go so they are giving it a helping hand. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of M. It will continue to work nicely until you need a new phone in 2, 3, 4 or 5 years or however long you decide you want to keep your iPhone SE third Gen and at that point you will get a phone without SIM tray just as you do now when you buy an iPhone 14 Pro. I predict that in short order many other flagship phones from Samsung, Google and so on will be released without a SIM tray just as Samsung did away with the 3.5mm headphone jack after Apple did (at least on most models). I don't keep up with Samsung too much, but I doubt they brought it back. Anyways, to me it makes total sense that over the next few years the world will switch to e-SIM. And here are another couple of Billion less little plastic pieces ending up in landfills, oceans and the environment. You have to keep in mind that in countries like the Philippines and many other Asian and African countries people use cell phones with minimal service and often just a small prepaid load which allows them to send text message and what is more to receive messages and phone calls. A SIM in the Philippines costs less than a Dollar and people switch them like we do our underwear and in many cases they go in the trash after a relatively short time when the person decides their next prepaid plan should be with a different provider. If everybody did e-SIM that could still be just as easy without all the SIM cards ending up in the garbage and requiring all sorts of resources during the manufacturing process. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of Julian Sent: Wednesday, October 19, 2022 4:17 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: And So It Begins: Does Anyone Know How to Buy iPhone 14Pro Max with a Physical SIM Tray from within the United States? The sad reality is, every time Apple shows "courage " look out, it means that somethings about to get taken away. Just like every time something is done in the name of "safety" it usually means some right or liberty is about to get taken away, that's as far as I'll go into that on this list though. Good luck in being able to get the phone that you want with a Sim tray. For my part, I'm going to hold onto my SE3 which is working quite nicely and suiting my needs. As it stands even if Mark decides to buy the phone from somewhere else it should work just fine here in the states. I mean people buy the phones here all the time and send them to other places. Yes if you take your sim from your 13 and put it back in your 8 it will just work. I'd expect it to just work. I get the situation where people want to be able to use multiple phones by just switching out the SIM card, but that's not something I'm interested in doing. When I got my iPhone 11, the person at the AT store basically just handed me my phone and I could walk out of the store with it. RE: And So It Begins: Does Anyone Know How to Buy iPhone 14Pro Max with a Physical SIM Tray from within the United States?
For my part, I don't expect the same feature set in all parts of the world for the same device, and I wouldn't find this insulting. Just as people have the right to choose which product they want to buy, companies have the right to choose what product they want to sell, and this includes offering slightly different feature sets in different parts of the world. Citizens of different countries may expect different things or be willing to pay more or less for the same feature. Countries have differing laws and different cultures will have different expectations. Bottom line is that companies are going to try to maximize their profit, and if this means tweaking the feature set from country to country then that's what they're going to do. Haven't there been times when Apple has released a device worldwide but some services were only available in the US to start out with? What about things like differing power standards, laws requiring USB support, different frequency spectrums and so on. All just my opinion, but Apple isn't going to change their ways just because I want them to. Unless I'm willing to send Apple a message from my wallet, I'll just keep looking at my product options and buying something from what's currently available and not what I want to be available. I'm perfectly happy with an ESIM, and in fact I prefer it due to it's ease of use for what I want to do with a smart phone. I respect those who want a physical SIM though, and I'd never push back against them or expect them to use an ESIM just because it works for me. -- Christopher (AKA CJ) =>÷ Chaltain at Outlook, USA -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of M. I am not an expert in these things, but I think that phones in specific countries are set up to use the cell bands in use in that country, so if you buy one from outside the United States, you could have problems, in theory. I could be wrong, but if it were me, I would investigate. Well, actually if it were me which I am, I just got a simless 14 Pro. RE: And So It Begins: Does Anyone Know How to Buy iPhone 14Pro Max with a Physical SIM Tray from within the United States?
Peter, with all do respect, this is not the same as the removal of the headphone jack. In that instance, the jack was removed from all new models of the phone, regardless of from where they were purchased. I did not start this thread to engage in a debate. Each person is free to purchase his /her preferred device. In my case, I will do my best to obtain the model that allows me the greatest wireless carrier flexibility. So, let's keep this thread on point; said point being how, if possible, to purchase iPhone 14 with a physical SIM tray from within the United States. Well said, Julian. In addition, if I pay the same money for a product as those outside the US, then I expect the same feature set. It really is that simple. To me, selling a phone model that does not offer the same features but that costs the same price as the enhanced model, is insulting. Just my opinion, of course. For what it's worth, some of us simply just enjoy the freedom of switching our Sim card between phones without having to interact with our carrier. Remember the good ole days of CDMA? Were you had to interact with the carrier and give them your electronic serial number every time you wanted to switch phones? I realize that eSIM is nowhere near as draconian, but still, some of us just enjoy that freedom and enjoy that method and it should not be taken away from us. Therefore, I fully understand why Mark wants to go through the trouble of finding an iPhone 14 that still allows him the flexibility. Not that I'm necessarily in the market for an iPhone 14, but, I will be watching this discussion with interest. I'm certain that some of my clients will asked similar questions so I would like to have good info to give them. It’s an interesting question. I keep getting the message on my 13 promax that I don’t have a Sim card, and I Have to say okay each time. RE: And So It Begins: Does Anyone Know How to Buy iPhone 14Pro Max with a Physical SIM Tray from within the United States?
Apparently the iPHone isn't expensive enough already so he wants to add the cost of going to Canada for the sake of a physical sim tray, which of course is his choice. Perhaps simply calling Apple and asking what happens if you do not specify a carrier when ordering instead of mucking around waiting for answers on lists? Only Apple can answer this question. RE: And So It Begins: Does Anyone Know How to Buy iPhone 14Pro Max with a Physical SIM Tray from within the United States?
I also would be annoyed by not being able to use a sim tray. What if you have another phone that you want to switch to like possibly an Android model? This used to be easy because all you have to do is simply switch the sim card from one phone to the other. Now, as far as I know, you can't do that any longer without jumping through a bunch of hoops. Hopefully, there will be a way of achieving the same result easily. -Original Message- From: viphone@googlegroups.com On Behalf Of llump...@austin.rr.com Sent: Tuesday, October 18, 2022 9:50 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: RE: And So It Begins: Does Anyone Know How to Buy iPhone 14Pro Max with a Physical SIM Tray from within the United States? Taylor Sent: Tuesday, October 18, 2022 8:39 PM To: viphone@googlegroups.com Subject: And So It Begins: Does Anyone Know How to Buy iPhone 14Pro Max with a Physical SIM Tray from within the United States? Hello Everyone, And so it begins. I was in one of my local Apple stores, yesterday taking a look at iPhone 14 Pro Max. It is my hope to purchase an iPhone 14 model with a physical SIM tray. While discussing this with a store manager, I was somewhat surprised to learn that, according to him, the store has been inundated by customers who only want to buy iPhone 14 with a physical SIM tray. He told me that they are working on crafting an in-store response to the enquiries designed to discouraged customers from seeking a physical SIM tray. He followed that up by saying, "I know you, Mark, and no response is going to keep you from getting that SIM tray model, if that is what you want." (smile) He is a very smart man (smile). So, the search begins. Does anyone know away to purchase an iPhone 14 Pro Max with a physical SIM tray, from within the United States? Some people are saying that if you buy a model from the Apple online store, without designating a wireless provider, that Apple will ship you a model with a physical SIM tray. However, I cannot locate anyone to confirm this. Make no mistake, I'm not above taking a short trek up to Canada to pick up a model but if I can avoid it, I would prefer to do so. I have a friend who is heading to Japan in a couple of weeks and, of course, I could have the friend pick up a model, in Japan, but that makes me somewhat uncomfortable; I don't know why. I think I'd rather go to Canada, in person, to grab a model. All replies greatly appreciated. Mark -- The following information is important for all members of the V iPhone list. Re: And So It Begins: Does Anyone Know How to Buy iPhone 14Pro Max with a Physical SIM Tray from within the United States?
Mark, I'm just curious, what's wrong with going the E-sim route? I didn't have any trouble changing the physical sim-card from my iPhone 8 to my 13 pro max. However, if apple is going the e-sim route, then personally I'd go with that option. However, again, I hope you can find what you are looking for. On 10/18/22, M. Re: And So It Begins: Does Anyone Know How to Buy iPhone 14Pro Max with a Physical SIM Tray from within the United States?
To my knowledge, I don’t think there’s a way to get a physical Sim because if I remember correctly, they stated that it was gonna be electronic so I could be very wrong though. I could be very wrong, but I don’t think the model you’re looking at has a physical Sim tray, but I could be very wrong in this as well. That’s just what I’ve gathered from the Keynote that I heard or the Apple event. Whatever you wanna call it. Sent from my iPhone > On Oct 18, 2022, at 6:39 PM, M.
