This is just my opinion, if you are very invested in apple’s products and 
services and money is not an issue, you should purchase an apple TV. However, 
if you are using google music and things like that and money is an issue you 
should look more in depth with the chrome cast. We don’t own the newest chrome 
cast but I had lots of difficulty getting the chrome cast very useable. One 
nice thing about the chrome cast is that it can be very travel friendly and so 
my husband uses it on business trips and even for business presentations but he 
uses an Android device. We personally did not find that we experienced the same 
level of ease of use with my iPhone. That was a year ago of course. I would not 
mind having a new one for travel since it is supposed to work with Netflix. 
However, at home, I much much prefer the apple TV. I love using it with apple 
music. I just feel that I can do a lot more with my apple TV. I think even if 
you were to get a great deal on a third Generation Apple TV you would be able 
to enjoy it. Mine got fried by lightening and that’s the only reason I have a 
newer one and yes, I do find that I love having Siri on the remote with the 
newest apple TV.

I did really want  the audio version of the chrome cast for music but as far as 
I know, I cannot play apple music to the chrome cast audio. :(

I can now use apple tv on my home stereo without a tv. I don't think that is

Coming to this late due to being on vacation, but the other big thing
is that with ChromeCast ,you are limited to what you can do with the
service. However, with Apple TV, it looks like you have access to
everything and everything therefore speaks with VoiceOver. I don't
have either, though I have used Chromecast apps to cast things to my
in-laws' TV. I have also observed that I don't have that many apps
which can use Chromecast. My wife and I are highly considering getting
an Apple TV later in the year when our money evens out. It seems well
worth the cost.

I don't own a Chromecast, but my understanding is that in apps that support it, 
once you choose the Chromecast option, the Chromecast actually takes over the 
streaming. This makes it different from AirPlay in that AirPlay streams 
wirelessly from one device to another. So if you use Chromecast to watch a 
Netflix movie, once you've found that movie on your phone and initiated the 
Chromecast session, you could take your phone entirely out of the loop, even 
power it down.

The Chrome Cast works a bit differently than the Apple TV. Chrome Cast depends 
on the app on your phone. For example the Net Flix app on your phone will have 
a button that says something like cast to chrome cast or something like that. 
In a way it is better than the Apple TV. Also the Chrome Cast is only $35 
compared to the $150 price tag of the new Apple TV.

Both iTunes and Amazon music are not accessible with the chrome cast. That is 
why I didn't get one. All of my music is iTunes or Amazon. So it made zero 
sense to purchase the chrome cast.

No, it depends on a phone app as it is not accessible by itself. Also, if you 
have purchases in iTunes, I do not believe you can play them with chrome cast.

The Chrome Cast works a bit differently than the Apple TV. Chrome Cast 
depends on the app on your phone. For example the Net Flix app on your 
phone will have a button that says something like cast to chrome cast or 
something like that. In a way it is better than the Apple TV. Also the 
Chrome Cast is only $35 compared to the $150 price tag of the new Apple TV.

Chrome cast is certainly cheaper. But, because you must have that ability to 
cast from your phone or tablet, it has limitations. Applications without the 
cast capability won't work. I was considering getting a chrome cast audio, but 
none of the things I like to send from a device to audio have cast. So it would 
be pointless. This depends on which services you use of course

At this point though, you could probably score a refurb Apple TV third gen for 
$40. If all you want is streaming and airplay, then it’s more than good enough 
for that.

The wife and I have two refurb Apple TVs and are perfectly happy with them. 
They’re both over a year old and have never given us trouble.

She uses them all the time to airplay her German TV programs. Super fast and 
easy.

Hello,
The Chrome Cast works a bit differently than the Apple TV. Chrome Cast depends 
on the app on your phone. For example the Net Flix app on your phone will have 
a button that says something like cast to chrome cast or something like that. 
In a way it is better than the Apple TV. Also the Chrome Cast is only $35 
compared to the $150 price tag of the new Apple TV.

Well, that is interesting. I had not heard that you could completely take your 
phone or tablet out of the loop, once the stream was going. Unfortunately for 
me, the things I would like to stream are not cast enabled. That is why I did 
not purchase the chrome cast. I wanted to use my android devices, of which I 
have two, although  one is kind of old. But since when I would be streaming 
isn't castable, it didn't make sense.
