RE: Typing with Fleksy

2012-07-26 Thread Rick Alfaro
Hi.

Tap and hold on the Fleksy keyboard and slide your finger up until you pass
the first row of letters and you will then be in the row of punctuation
groups. It's located where you would normally expect to find numbers on a
standard qwerty keyboard. Once in that row of punctuations and symbols, you
can slide left or right to pick a group at which point you can then slide up
or down to choose a symbol from that group. Honestly, it sounds way more
complicated than it actually is. Once you try it you'll see it's quite easy
and much better than the old symbols keyboard from past versions.

Best,

Rick

Hi there.

Try this:
Press and hold anywhere on the keyboard.
Move your finger to the top of the keyboard. You will hear some symbol keys.
Each represents a symbol group. Choose the dollar symbol, for example.
You can then swipe down to get other currencies.
Similarly, if you choose the left parenthesis you can swipe down to get
other types of brackets, and so on.

Hope this helps

Once you find a symbol like the parenthesis in the below example, lift your

I must ask my other question I sent to support when the first version came
out. I am writing an email. I write the email and want to go back and
re-read. When I do by either putting it up to my ear or tapping 3 times on
home, I find I want to re-word or fix a word or just put in another word way
at the beginning of my email. Is there a way to do this in Fleksy? If not,
when I get to the front screen and before I actually put it in an email is
there a way to do this. Do I have to put it in an email and then flick up
and down and use the Apple keyboard to correct? As there is no voice in
Fleksy, as there is in Jaws, I sometimes put words in that are not correct
tenses just because I am concentrating on keeping sentences going and forget
what I was typing. This will come in time with use, but I can see a need
for being able to correct directly in Fleksy.

RE: typing with fleksy

2012-07-20 Thread Amy Billman
I have personally found that the combination of Fleksy with the tactile
screen protector increases productivity, not decreases it.
Because you already have a means of knowing exactly where the letters are in
space on the keyboard, by touch, when you type with Fleksy using your
tactile screen protector, you'll increase your chances of being able to
quickly have words recognized.
At least, this has been my own personal experience, and the types of
customer feedback that I've received since the release of this app.
Every user is going to have a different experience as is with *everything*,
but that's the data we've gleaned from personal use as well as outside
sources.

And this statement Chuck makes is the key, folks. remember, do not wait for
the letter to be spoken.

Once I got this down, my typing increased to three times the speed it is
with using th regular iPhone keyboard and twice as fast as using type in
Braille.

Again, though Fleksy is not a perfect app, I am extremely impressed!! Kudos
to the developers!

The Fleksy key board is larger than the iPhones standard key board so the
tactile screen protector will not be helpful when typing with Fleksy. Ignore
it.
Once you are used to Fleksy typing will be so much faster than it was with
the tactile screen protector.

remember, do not wait for the letter to be spoken. Just approximate where
each letter would be, then flick right to hear the word. If it is not the
correct word, flick down until the correct word is spoken. Then continue
typing.

Hi Chuck,

Nice description of the placement of the keyboard in Fleksy.
Inadvertently, you demonstrated one of Fleksy's strengths, to wit: you had to
input the word fourth manually, this was not because Fleksy couldn't
understand your typing, but because the word Fourth is actually spelled
forth, unless my memory is playing me tricks!

Re: typing with fleksy

2012-07-19 Thread Chuck Dean
Hi Raul,

I assume you are referring to my suggestions about a way to make a screen
curtain while using Fleksy.

First, I am curious, how many times have you had to have a sighted person
use your phone? In the rare event that this would be necessary, you could
peel off the screen protector or turn the screen brightness up.
But considering that we are talking about someone who runs the screen
curtian all the time, wouldn't that make the phone un-usable for sighted
people?

But as I understand it, this is all moot as the Fleksy developer is
planning a fix to the screen curtain issue.

Re: typing with fleksy

2012-07-19 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hi Chuck. In all fairness, you don't know me from Adam, so you really
have no idea how often someone would use my phone other than me, sighted
or otherwise. However since you did ask, my son who has vision, and my
daughter who also has vision, use my phone from time to time to play
games. My wife who is also sighted, sometimes uses my phone in the case
that her own phone isn't around or nearby. So, why would I want to put
on a screen protector which has been painted over, and in the end making
my phone look rather nasty and not like an iPhone. Furthermore, if you
peel off a screen protector enough times, the chances of getting it bent
increase, and eventually make it unusable. However, as you said, the
point is moot since the Fleksy developer is doing something in the next
update regarding privacy.

Cheers, and keep rocking on!

First, I am curious, how many times have you had to have a sighted

you could peel off the screen protector or turn the screen brightness up.
But considering that we are talking about someone who runs the screen
curtian all the time, wouldn't that make the phone un-usable for sighted
people?

But as I understand it, this is all moot as the Fleksy developer is
planning a fix to the screen curtain issue.

Hi all having trouble with Fleksy,

Perhaps I can give you some help with Fleksy by using the
little
vision I
have. The Fleksy keyboard only has the twenty six letters
of the
alphabet.
There are no shift, delete, space, or enter keys on it.
The top row containing the letters q, w, e, r, t, y, i,
o, and p
is half
way up the screen. The next row is about three fourths of
an inch
below the
first line. And the last row is three fourths of an inch
below
the second
row, or about one fourth of an inch above the home button.

Try doing this. Touch the center of the screen and hold
it their
until the
letter is spoken. Now slide your finger around to learn the
approximate
position of the letters. Once you get a general idea how the
keyboard is
laid out, you will start to type faster.

This was typed with Fleksy while the screen curtain was
on, so
you can see
that even someone who is used to using some vision can
type with
Fleksy
blind.

PS.Fleksy made three mistakes, where I had to correct it.
And I
had to
manually input the word fourths

RE: typing with fleksy

2012-07-18 Thread Rick Alfaro
Hi, I have the tactile screen protector myself and find that it doesn't seem
to throw anything off at all. The dots seem to coincide with the letters on
the Fleksy keyboard. Not sure how this is but when I touch and hold a
letter in Fleksy like say the letter r for example, it matches where the dot
is for that letter.

Best,

Rick

One thing you need to know is that the keyboard in Fleksey is higher on the
screen than the regular one. This may be causing a problem as your tactile
protector if it has locater dots isn't in line with the keyboard in Fleksey.

Re: typing with fleksy

2012-07-18 Thread Duane Steele
I agree with Debbi. I can't seem to get any words right, and wish I
could return Fleksy to the store. (smile) Wouldn't it be great if
Duxbury could come up with an app that would allow typing of grade two
braille. Until that happens, we who like braille will have to settle
for type in braille if we want to use our iPhone keypad. I do,
however, congratulate those who have mastered Fleksy.

Re: typing with fleksy

I'll be glad to help anybody with type in braille issues. I've
completely mastered it, and, the only thing we have to realize is that
we must use grade one braille, and the app was made strictly according
to Italian braille specifications which change how punctuation is
entered.

Hi all having trouble with Fleksy,

Perhaps I can give you some help with Fleksy by using the little

vision I
have. The Fleksy keyboard only has the twenty six letters of the

alphabet.

There are no shift, delete, space, or enter keys on it.
The top row containing the letters q, w, e, r, t, y, i, o, and p

is half
way up the screen. The next row is about three fourths of an inch

below the
first line. And the last row is three fourths of an inch below

the second

row, or about one fourth of an inch above the home button.

Try doing this. Touch the center of the screen and hold it their

until the
letter is spoken. Now slide your finger around to learn the

approximate
position of the letters. Once you get a general idea how the

keyboard is

laid out, you will start to type faster.

This was typed with Fleksy while the screen curtain was on, so

you can see
that even someone who is used to using some vision can type with

Fleksy

blind.

PS.Fleksy made three mistakes, where I had to correct it. And I

had to

manually input the word fourths.
I hope this helps,
Chuck

BTW Kim,
If you want a screen curtain all the time, you could get a screen protector

I am not sure what type of paint to use, but it may be something worth

Re: typing with fleksy

2012-07-18 Thread Chuck Dean
 Hi Kim,
Here something you may also want to try. I turned the screen brightness
down to zero in settings. The screen gets very dark, but not completely
black.
Then I typed a few words in Fleksy. My wife who has 20 20 vision could not
read the text from four feet away.
At least it will keep people from reading over your shoulder while you are
using Fleksy.
Hope this helps,
Chuck

It's really interesting to see how different people type on their iPhones.
I used to thumb type when I had my Windows Mobile phone and started that way

fingers on my right hand, I never went back to thumb typing and now find it
awkward. It's even better with Fleksy.

Just an FYI,
I use my thumbs like those kids who are always texting,

I can type almost as fast as I can on my pc, although, I

am walking.

This app really works well, and i am getting very fast at
selecting the proper words and puncuation. Manual input
is still slow, but getting better.

I can type almost as fast as I can on my pc, although, I should say
that I suck at typing. I can even type while I am walking.

This app really works well, and i am getting very fast at selecting
the proper words and puncuation. Manual input is still slow, but
getting better.

Don't have Fleksy here, but from the demonstrations I've heard, when
you turn VO back on after typing, flick right and one of the buttons
that appears is copy. Double tap that and your text is copied to the
clipboard. Apparently everything is already selected when you put it
in Fleksy.

Penny,

If you copy, it's a case of tapping the Copy button in the menu then going to
your email programme, finding the place where you need to inserrt the text
you've written, turn the rotor to edit and select paste and you're done.

Name a application that had a demo of it before you bought it. Usually it had
limitations on the program but how or what type of restrictions could you put
on this application to give a demo. Not only that but their is many pi podcast
which show the functionality of the program. I based my decision on what I
heard plus what I thought it could do for me. I love it for I can type ten
times faster then I ever have before.

Penny,

If you copy, it's a case of tapping the Copy button in the menu then going
to your email programme, finding the place where you need to inserrt the
text you've written, turn the rotor to edit and select paste and you're
done.

 Hi all,
 Just an FYI,
I use my thumbs like those kids who are always texting, with Fleksy. I let
the iPhone rest on my fingers and type with a thumb on each side of the
 key board.
I can type almost as fast as I can on my pc, although, I should say that I
suck at typing. I can even type while I am walking.

This app really works well, and i am getting very fast at selecting the
proper words and puncuation. Manual input is still slow, but getting better.

RE: Fast typing with Fleksy

2012-07-14 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Christopher,

I don't know if that is an Apple limitation, but there are no trial apps
ever. Developers can make so-called Lite versions of their apps and many
do this. The Lite version has limited functionality and typically is free. I
agree, Fleksy could be offered as a light version maybe with a limitation to
only allow for typing 100 characters or whatever and as you said, they could
disable the email and SMS links since otherwise somebody could use the free
version to type short text messages. Maybe this is something you could
suggest to the developers. On the other hand of course there has been so
much positive discussion that I think it's pretty much clear that the
overwhelming response to Fleksy is positive.

Take care,
Sieghard

Re: Fast typing with Fleksy

Agreed, and the response on this list and the podcasts available are
great, but I'd still like a chance to actually play with the typing
technique myself first. I may end up buying it myself anyway, but if
there had been a free version, I would have already just taken it for a
spin.

Re: Fast typing with Fleksy

2012-07-14 Thread Grant Hardy
Hello all,

Here are my impressions of Fleksy. As others have noted, its ability
to accurately identify words is really quite incredible, and the
answer to whether typing common words in Fleksy is faster than typing
them using the default on-screen keyboard, is an unequivocal yes. It
sometimes seems as though it's reading my mind, the accuracy is so
good!

If there were a couple shortcomings in this premium-priced app, you
first have to realize that a premise of using the app correctly is
that you know how to spell every word you are planning to type
perfectly. There is no spell checker or autr-correct function at all.
So if, say, you're trying to spell the word 'conscientious' but you
make a trivial spelling error, the app may not guess the word at all.

Also, it seems a bit odd to me that there is no way to capitalize
words at will, especially proper names that you may add to the
dictionary such as Viphone, or names of companies and organizations
such as Simon Fraser University, or words which are sometimes
capitalized but sometimes aren't such as Dad. I hope this is added as
soon as possible because if you want to write professional messages
you're going to probably have to do a little bit of editing once
you've taken the Fleksy message where it needs to go.

And maybe it's just habit, but I do wish there was a more convenient
way of entering the spacebar rather than flicking right, as it does
seem to be a little jarring to my typing flow.

All in all, it's a brilliant concept and a great first version of a
promising app.

Grant

I got the Fleksy app and I'm having fun typing ... - from Fleksy

2012-07-13 Thread Katey Glass
I got the Fleksy app and I'm having fun typing with my thumbs. I'm sure I'll
get faster with practice as typing with them is a new thing for me. I'm sure
things will get better as I continue to use it. As I said using my thumbs is
new for me as usually I use my index finger on my right hand and hold the phone
in my left one.

 Les,
