What is the speaking bar. So far it’s just annoying so how do I get rid of it?

Thanks,

Yes. You can either expand the speaking bar, by double tapping I think, then
tap on “stop”, or go to settings > Accessibility > Spoken Content > Speak
screen and turn it off. See if either of those help.

Re: Speak screen, Expand speaking bar. What is this?

2021-06-22 Thread Richard Turner
The settings under accessibility, Spoken Content, are mostly directed at people
who do not use VoiceOver.
Speak Selection puts up a button when text is selected so you can have that
text spoken.

Speak screen allows you to swipe down with two fingers from the top of the
screen and have it read; like with Apple Books.
The one advantage speak screen has over VoiceOver is that you can lock the
phone and it keeps reading; which is good if you are reading an apple book; but
not useful if you are using VoiceOver the vast majority of the time.

Re: Speak screen, Expand speaking bar. What is this?

2021-06-22 Thread Devin Prater
Yes. You can either expand the speaking bar, by double tapping I think, then
tap on “stop”, or go to settings > Accessibility > Spoken Content > Speak
screen and turn it off. See if either of those help.

It sounds like you somehow turned it on.

Re: Question regarding this speak screen/expand speaking bar message that I keep getting on my iPhone

2020-11-28 Thread Pete Nalda
Speak screen is a low vision feature to read content, text only, not objects.
Think of it as voiceover lite. It’s invoked by a two finger swipe down. It has
its own controller That pops up when in use. It can be turned off under
accessibility in settings.

Re: What is speaking bar?

2020-04-13 Thread Devin Prater
If you have “speak screen” enabled in Settings > Accessibility > Spoken
Content, this will appear sometimes. It is the “speaking bar” used to control
speak screen. To make it go away, the easiest thing to do is to activate speak
screen on some text, then stop speak screen before it stops itself.

Re: What is the expand speaking bar and how do I disable it?

2019-12-25 Thread regina alvarado
I have really learned to like the vertical scroll bar. When there are multiple
pages just flicking through them is much easier than flicking with 3 fingers to
get there. Sometimes it gets in the way, but I find if I go out of the page I
am on and back in I can move it a little. These minor problems are not worth
the loss of the bar in my opinion. It is like the index in contacts to move to
a letter. Very handy to put you close to what you want in a list.

So, write both accessibil...@apple.com and go to the www.apple.com/feedback
page and fill out the feedback form.

But don't confuse the vertical bar with any particular setting as it appears
all over the place.

The other option is to learn to use it to get more or less of the screen into
view.

I have no idea if that is there for sighted users.

I saw nothing in Spoken Content abut Expand Speaking Bar. If I did, would that
get rid of that bar that has so much percent of how many pages? I'd be happy to
eliminate that one.

Actually, that is from the speak selection setting.
If you never want that, go to Settings, Accessibility, Spoken Content, and turn
it off.
In there is also the speak screen where you can have it read to you without
VoiceOver.
The hints/explanations are just after each item there in settings.

RE: What is the expand speaking bar and how do I disable it?

2019-12-24 Thread Richard Turner
The Vertical bar at the bottom of screens is here to stay unless Apple listens
to everyone who doesn't like it.

Right about what is there.

I thought it was the vertical scroll bar too.

I never said anything about a vertical bar so I'm not sure what you are talking
about.
The first two things in the Spoken Content settings read as follows:
Spoken Content
Speak Selection
A Speak button will appear when you select text.
Speak Screen
Swipe down with two fingers from the top of the screen to hear the content of
the screen.
Each of those can be turned on or off.
Typing feedback and the voice used can be controlled there as well, but those
are the two that deal with the original question.

2019-12-24 Thread Richard Turner
Actually, that is from the speak selection setting.
If you never want that, go to Settings, Accessibility, Spoken Content, and turn
it off.
In there is also the speak screen where you can have it read to you without
VoiceOver.
The hints/explanations are just after each item there in settings.

RE: getting rid of the speaking bar

2017-11-23 Thread Alan Lemly
If your settings are such that the speaking bar appears which seems obvious,
you need to understand what gesture invokes the speaking bar and how to close
it. With focus on any item in the topline status bar, a two finger swipe down
will start the speaking bar. When it starts, it appears in the dead center of
my iPhone 7 screen, is about a half inch high, and its width expands to about
an eighth of an inch from the left and right screen edges. In the upper left of
the speaking bar is a minimize control and in the upper right is a stop
speaking control that presents as an X and which when double tapped will close
the speaking bar. Below these at the bottom of the speaking bar are the
following media player controls from left to right: decrease speaking rate,
rewind, play/pause, fast forward, and increase speaking rate.

I don't use the speaking bar very much but my understanding was that at some
point in the past, it was handy to speak for apps that would stop speaking when
the phone was locked since the speaking bar would continue to speak in such a
case. Maybe this might have been an issue with iBooks at some point.

I hope this helps.

You need to go into settings, general, accessibility and speech. Once there,
set the speak selection option to off. That will eliminate the speaking bar.

The speak screen setting should also be off. Sadly Other than those two
settings, I haven't heard of anything else causing the speaking bar to
appear. I hope others have perhaps found out how to deal with this oddly
appearing speaking bar. If you celebrate it, have a happy Thanksgiving day.
I'm in Canada so our Thanksgiving was somewhat earlier.

Re: speaking bar

2017-07-27 Thread Michael Feir
That speaking bar will allow sighted people to have selections of text read
to them. They don't need to deal with VoiceOver which is far more
complicated. I haven't had to deal with it for quite some time. However, if
memory serves, you need to go to seettings, general, accessibility, speech.
Once there, find the "speak selected text" option and turn it off. That
should do it I think.

speaking bar

2017-07-27 Thread Jeremy Gilley
Hello folks,

I hope someone can help me from going insane.

Not sure how, or why, but all of a sudden, in the past couple days, this
button called expand speaking bar keeps coming on my screen and I can't get
rid of it.

Please, does anyone know what this is, and how I can kick it off my phone?

Its in the way, and I don't know what it is, what it does, had no use for it
before, nor do I currently.

Any help would be so very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Anna has provided the settings below to turn the speak screen feature on and
off and I thought I'd provide the gesture to begin the speaking. With the
feature turned on, placing focus on the topline status bar on something like
time followed by a two finger swipe down will place the speech bar smack in the
middle of the screen and start speech. The speech bar covers most of the screen
from left to right and is about half an inch tall. It contains a number of
controls and has an X in its upper right corner to exit it. Jonathan Mosen did
a podcast explaining the speak screen feature a couple of years ago.

If Speak Screen is on, you can start reading the screen with the controls on

RE: Speaking bar

2017-03-28 Thread Kramlinger, Keith G., M.D.
Hi,

Does speak Screen work for long articles within NFB Newsline? I read a number
of publications that are long, and this would be great there. I tried it a
couple of times a year or so back and couldn’t get it to work, but I didn’t
know if it was me or the Speak Screen.

Thanks in advance, Keith

One thing the article doesn't, is that poor cat voiceOver, you do the two
finger swipe down after touching an icon on the status bar to get speak screen
reading.

Hi, Brian. You may find the following podcast by Jonathan Mosen useful.
iOS 8’s Speak Screen Feature. Listen to iBooks with your Screen Locked and More:
http://mosen.org/ios-8s-speak-screen-feature-listen-to-ibooks-with-your-screen-locked-and-more/

If you'd prefer an article with instructions on how to use this feature instead
of a podcast, take a look at the following link.
New in iOS 8: Start Text-To-Speech Easily with Speak Screen:

Hi Brian,

That appears if you have turned on Speak Screen. This is in Accessibility
settings, in Speech.

Best,
Anna
