RE: Find My Phone

2014-08-09 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Harry,

I have never put a phone into DFU mode, but according to what I read about it,
you should first turn your phone off completely after connecting it to iTunes.
Then press the power button for 3 seconds, follow this by pressing the home
button for 10 seconds (don’t let go of the power button) and then let go of the
power button, but continue to press just the home button for another 15 seconds
or so. I’m just repeating instructions I read on a few different websites.
Jonathan may well have done this and started without turning off the phone
first so it might also work that way.

Regards,

Sieghard

The first thing I would do in your situation is to warm reset the phone. Hold
down the home and power buttons for about six seconds, then release them and
the phone should reboot.

If the problem had persisted, you could have put the phone into DFU (Device
Firmware Update) mode. To do this, connect the phone to iTunes, then hold down
the home and power buttons for about 6 seconds. Release the power button, but
keep the home button held down until iTunes pops up with a message saying that
it's detected a phone in DFU mode. You can then restore the OS, then restore
your backup. A bit drastic, but it's the only way around it in the
circumstances you describe.

 Hi Eric,

 Very easy and reliable: when
you are on a chat you want to delete, double tap and hold on the right
side of the screen.
After the little tone you get
 when you do a
double tap and hold you hear another tone and at that point just swipe to
the left of the screen without lifting your finger. Voiceover will put
focus right on the delete button, just double tap and it's done.

A Question About the RII Mini BlueTooth Keyboard

2014-08-09 Thread M. Taylor
Hello,

First, thanks to the members of the list for suggesting the RII Mini
Bluetooth keyboard. I received mine earlier today and am truly enjoying it.

Second,
I have a question that may sound weird to some of you but here it goes.

On the Apple Bluetooth keyboard and on my Braille display (Focus 40 Blue),
there is either a key or a key-combo that one can use to manually show or
hide the on-screen keyboard when entering text. Does such a key combination
command exist on the RII keyboard?

It really is a marvelous little device.

Hello list,

I'm just wondering if Audioboo has something like bookmarks.
The problem is when I close Audioboo (either from app switcher or just by
pressing home button) and got back to Audioboo, it always gets me to the first
post.
Keep scrolling to the boo I listened last, really gives me headaches.
Please, does anyone know if I can get to the last boo I've listened?
Thank you for your help in advance.
Have a wonderful weekend.

Re: Find My Phone

2014-08-09 Thread Arnold Schmidt
My iPhone 5 has gotten into one of these lockup situations two, maybe three,
times since getting it in October, 2012. It hasn't done it recently, and
perhaps if it does it again, I can get it going myself, being that perhaps I
have more knowledge about how to get it going again now, than I had then. I
remember that holding down the home and power buttons would not restart it. In
all the locked up situations, luckily, I was here, and not out somewhere away
from my computer. Simply connecting it to iTunes on the computer got it going.
I remember the last time, it took it about a minute to sort things out, I was
getting worried, but it came back on, and everything was okay. I would not
want one of these devices without a computer running iTunes. I have coworkers
who use their IOS devices without iTunes on a computer, I know it can be done,
but I also know about their having to take their IOS device to the Apple store
to get it going again.

I happen to have the LifeProof. It is a lot lighter than the defender, but it
does have a flaw. The speaker is a little muffled while listening to Voiceover.
I don't know if they have fixed that in the new cases. It is about the same
price as the defender, but I know where you can get it for $69.99 if interested.

American Express Blue Bird app dont update

2014-08-09 Thread Rob

Dear List,
I am writing to let you know that the recent update to the
American Express Blue Bird app
has lots of unlabeled buttons. I am going to contact them about this.
the old versions work very well with VoiceOver on the iPhone.
here are a few problems I had.
1. after entering email and password the login button is the first
unlabeled button.
2. on the screen that asks for your secret answer, VoiceOver will not
read the question. after you enter your answer, tap the second unlabeled
button to continue. the first button gave me an error. it must be a
cancel button.

 3. Adding funds to your account. there are five unlabeled buttons.
the first four seems to be pre labeled amounts as follows:
$20
$50
$100
$200
and the last button is the review button to varify the amount entered
before submiting.

I'm sure there are many mor problems like these listed above.
If you use this app please contact them about this matter.

Thanks,
Rob

Thanks Mark, for the detailed instructions about canceling Beats music.

Well, maybe I'll hang in there, here's an answer I received through one of
their support forums.

Hey Jim, our product development team is currently working hard on this. We
understand your frustration and appreciate your patience as we work to
provide a better listening experience for you. Thank you, please keep in
touch for updates, we've got your back.

Maybe they're serious about providing better Voiceover support, so we shall
see.

Thanks.

Hello Jim,

I did a bit of research for you because I know how frustrating these kinds
of things can be.

First, for assistance, contact Beats Music at 800-442-4000.

Second, assuming that you subscribed to the Beats Music service via A T T
billing, they suggest that you do the following:

If you really must cancel your Beats Subscription billed through ATT you
can do it easily, directly from your device, by following the steps below:

1.
Go to ATT Mobile Purchases att.com/db and enter the 10-digit ATT wireless
phone number of the device that was used to make the purchase.

2.
Select Next. An 8-digit one-time PIN will be sent to the device. You will
need access to this device.

3.
Enter the 8-digit one-time PIN, and then select Submit. On the Purchases
Summary screen, you'll see your recent mobile purchases.

4.
Select the subscription or service you want to cancel.

5.
Once the new page opens, check the box marked Cancel Subscription.

6.
Select Submit Request.

Jim, the URL containing the steps listed above is:

   Man, I am ticked off!
I had downloaded the Beats Music App and subscribed for a month, it’s still
just as inaccessible as ever on IOS!!

So, trying to cancel the subscription is a nightmare!
First, the Beats web site tells you to go to the manage your account page,
from which you can cancel your subscription, but then another link says to
go to the Apple Itunes support pages, and the link to that page cannot be
found!
It looks like there’s no way to cancel a subscription to this hideous
service for this dismal app.

At least, none that I can locate.
Any suggestions will sure be appreciated, I am completely disgusted with
this inaccessible app and what appears to be no easy way to cancel a
subscription.

Thanks.

Hi, Lynda. Actually, you don't close a book exactly. You go to the library by
first double-tapping in the text of the book, double-tapping the menu button
that appears, then double-tapping the library button. From there, you can go to
another book.

Hi I have a question as well. I have never played around with a braille
display but this sounds verry nice from looking at the specks on fs's sight.

my question is is the braille in grade 1 or grade 2? the only reason I am
asking is because I read braille but do better in grade 1 then 2 since I
don't have to stop and think of what the contractions meen. from Mich.

Morning.

I have just had the above since Friday last and have one question.

What does the round button do on the extreme left please? This button is on
the front of the display just before the rocker switch. I went in to
keyboard help and it said nothing. I also have the 40 Blue but I must say
the 14 is so comfortable to write with. I !olely use the 14 with my I phone

Thanks.

RE: NFL Mobile

2014-08-09 Thread Nicki Keck
I had to reinstall the app as well and can’t select my favorite team either. I
have the exact same problem. It selected the jaguars as my favorite team. The
jaguars! Gese I really want the Eagles, but the least it could have done is
select the bucs, not the jaguars. Makes no logical sense. I planned on having
my husband with his limited sight try to see if he could select it for me
later, but if someone has a better way, I’d be very happy. You can get back to
it in settings, but you still can’t select one.

Well, I guess this is progress but I'm not happy yet! I re-downloaded the app
and was finally able to sign in but now it has me down for the Ravens as my
favorite team and when I try to change it there are no choices: it just says
select your favorite team and has a button to pick another team to follow and
has a done button. Nothing I press allows me to change my favorite team.

Btw on the ipad I was able to sign in without reinstalling the app. It was on
the main page but was was some other information I had to click got it for
before the sign in button would work.

RE: Canceling a Beats Music Subscription

Hi Jim,

Apple bought Beats although I don't know if this is only the headphone division
or if it also includes their music service. If it does I would think
accessibility will be high on their list of priorities considering that Apple
takes accessibility pretty seriously. Maybe somebody knows more about what
Apple bought and what that all includes.

Thanks.

Re: Closing A Kindle Book

2014-08-09 Thread Arnold Schmidt
Or if you just want to stop reading for a while, but will want to return to the
specific book later, hit the home button. When you open Kindle again, it will
remember the book you were reading, and, more or less, where you were. Just
run your finger along the left side of the screen to find your exact place, do
the two-finger swipe down, and you are reading again. If it didn't remember
the specific screen you were on, a three-finger swipe left and right will move
you forward and backward by screen.

Hi, Lynda. Actually, you don't close a book exactly. You go to the library by
first double-tapping in the text of the book, double-tapping the menu button
that appears, then double-tapping the library button. From there, you can go to
another book.

Hi,

YOu're right - reminders play once and stop, unlike alarms. But they can
function as a to-do list - you can check the boxes when you've completed the
tasks.

Anna

Is this all that reminders do?
I was expecting it to be a bit more in your face e.g. it keeps playing the
alarm tone until you accept it or something?
If I miss a reminder, do I then have to manually go in to rmeinders to
look at the list of things to do?
I am guessing that a reminder may work slightly differently to an alarm
then?

Thanks in anticipation for any help.

It's a lot easier than that. For instance:
remind me to take the trash out tomorrow at 7

wake me up at 6:20
or
remind me to start dinner in 2 hours
or
set the timer for 45 minutes

I can set a reminder with SIRI, for example new reminder and it will

Is there a way to set a reminder with SIRI then specify a reminder time

Can I say something like new reminder with alarm and then it will prompt
me for an alarm time?

I have a weakness when it comes to earphones and wanted to report on the
latest wired ones I've tried with my iPhone 5. The Sennheiser MM30i Earphones
are okay but save your money and enjoy the

Apple EarPods with Remote and Mic that Apple has been supplying with iPhones
beginning with the iPhone 5. The Apple earpods have a better sound and quality
finish compared to the Sennheiser MM30i and at $29 with free shipping, you
can't beat the price. The Sennheiser sound is a bit brighter than the Apple and
just doesn't sound as rich or as good to me. I realize headphone sound quality
is one of the most subjective topics we're likely to discuss but I wanted to
share my opinion that the Sennheiser MM30i earphones are not worth the Amazon
price of $42 especially when compared to the Apple product. The MM30i has all
the same features and capabilities with their remote and volume buttons as the
Apple earpods so they'll serve as a good backup pair for me.

RE: MP3 Replay

2014-08-09 Thread Alan Lemly
Alan, I would recommend that you consider listening to your mp3 books using
Voice Dream Reader if you happen to have that app. It's very easy to
transfer the zipped mp3 books to VDR using iTunes.

Anyway, I think these steps will do what you want if you still want to
listen to the mp3 books using iTunes:

1. While Music is selected in your iTunes sidebar and the mp3 files
comprising the book you want to tag are listed and highlighted in the iTunes
Songs window, press ctrl + i to open the information dialog box.
2. Use your tab and arrow keys as needed until iTunes announces the
tabs of the dialog box and place focus on the Options tab.
3. Press alt + m to move to the media kind and tick the box and in the
drop-down box use your arrow keys to select audiobook.
4. Press alt + p and tick the box to select part of a compilation and
select yes in the drop-down box.
5. Press alt + r and tick the box to select remember position and
select yes in the drop-down box.
6. Execute ok to complete the process.
7. When you place focus on Books in the sidebar and Audiobooks in the
top selection buttons, the book you just tagged should be listed with any
others.

Good luck.

Re: cases for the 5S

2014-08-09 Thread Alan Paganelli

Hi Rebecca,

I've always bought a case for my iPhones but this time when I bought my 5s I
decided to try it with out a case. The screen of the 5s is pretty tough.
According to my sighted wife, there are no scratches on the screen of my
phone or anywhere else for that matter. I've had it slide out of my pocket
on to the floor when I've taken a nap on the sofa and the 5s didn't seem to
be any the worse for ware. I've had my 5s sense October 20, 2013. So you
may want to try it with out getting a case. You can always get one later on
if you really do need it.

Select all the books by a particular authorand press the applications key or
shift-f10. Select the get info option. I believe you can also do this by
pressing ctrl-I. Anyhow, go to the options tab in this multipage dialogue, and
find the box that will let you select the type of content it is. Choose
audiobooks, and then press okay. There are a few more options, such as skip
when shuffling and remember playback position which you can check if you like.

I hope this helps.

Re: MP3 Replay

2014-08-09 Thread Cheryl Homiak
It has nothing to do with where you place them manually in the Media folder as
far as I know; iTunes has to process them.

If you have already added the files to your library in iTunes, select the files
either individually or together and do get info. You can do this with
ctrl-option-shift-m for the context menu and then go down to get info and press
return.. Once you are in the get info window, select the Options tab. Change
the media kind to audiobook and press okay. This is what I do and I have done
it recently and it has worked fine for me.

Btw on the ipad I was able to sign in without reinstalling the app. It was on

The

Does Samsung work for Apple - a silly post

2014-08-09 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hello Listers,

As some of you who have read my posts over the last few years know I am from
Canada. I also subscribed to a Podcast called Apple Bite.

According to the latest episode a former employee of the Apple Store at
Vancouver's Pacific Centre Mall is called Sam Sung. Apparently Mr. Sung is
auctioning off his business card, a T-Shirt and lanyard for cherity on eBay
with all proceeds going to the British Columbia and Yukon Children's wish
foundation. In the Podcast they also pointed out that this is the only case
where you see Sam Sung and Apple on the same business card *Smile*. Here
is part of an article from the Vancouver Sun:

The bidding for a framed business card belonging to former Pacific Centre
Apple Store employee Sam Sung has surpassed the $80,000 mark on eBay.

Sung, who became a social media celebrity a couple of years ago because he
shares a name (sort of) with Apple's electronics competitor Samsung, says he
will donate all the money from the auction to Children's Wish: B.C. and
Yukon, an organization that grants wishes to terminally ill children.

He reached his goal to raise $10,000, the cost of one wish, on the second
day of the online auction which opened Tuesday. As of noon Thursday, the top
bid was $80,200.

I had a great time working for Apple and would recommend it to anyone. I
hope my old business card will go to another fellow Apple enthusiast with a
sense of humour and the desire to help raise some money for a good cause,
Sung wrote in his eBay posting.

Sung, who now works as a permanent placement consultant with a recruitment
firm, didn't pick his charity out of a hat. He's been volunteering at
Children's Wish for more than a year.

He came to our inaugural gala last year and since then he has volunteered
decorating gift boxes, said Jennifer Peterson, director of Children's Wish:
B.C. and Yukon. We give out these beautiful personalized gift boxes to the
children before their wish is fulfilled and Sam got involved with
personalizing the wish boxes.

Peterson says the B.C./Yukon chapter of Children's Wish fulfills, on
average, 70 to 75 wishes per year. She said Sung's donation, whatever it
ends up being, will have a significant impact on the work the charity does.

I was thinking maybe he'd raise $1,000 and when it reached $1,000 . we were
beside ourselves in the office, Peterson said. We are cautiously
optimistic that these are all legitimate bidders. There have been some
hiccups along the way with phony bidders but Sam is working with eBay to
make sure that these are all reputable bidders and all indications are today
is that it's all good.

The eBay auction closes Aug. 15.

For those who think this is just a joke, here is the eBay link for the
auction. Please feel free to bit at least $80,300 (as of the time when I am
writing this) to have a chance to win this auction (*smile*:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sam-Sung-Apple-Specialist-Business-Card-Exclusive-Ch
arity-Auction-/121403401377

I don't think we'll see Samsung pull anything like this, even if they have
an employee called John Apple somewhere in their organisation.

Regards,

Sieghard
