Re: knfb reader

2014-08-31 Thread Christopher Chaltain
I guess I tend to take what people and companies say at face value. I
guess I also don't see what the value is in spending energy dissecting
what a company says and speculating what's really going on behind the
scenes. Whether a company announces in July that a product will be
released at the end of August or whether they announce in August it'll
be coming out in mid-September, it'll still be coming out when it comes out.

From my experience, upgrades are quite tricky and hard to test. Who
knows what API changes Apple is making from IOS 7 to IOS 8 and what code
paths KNFB has in it to work well on both versions. Sure, KNFB can be
testing upgrades now with the beta of IOS 8, but how many combinations
of models, memory, other applications and so on can they test. It makes
sense to me that they'd wait until IOS 8 comes out. This gives them more
time to test and it means a lot of people will be upgrading to IOS 8
before installing KNFB, eliminating a lot of potential problems. I seem
to recall a handful of apps had trouble transitioning from IOS 6 to IOS 7.

Companies are damned if they do and damned if they don't. Didn't we have
a discussion on this list after IOS 7 came out that Apple should have
held it off a bit to get more testing in and fix more accessibility
bugs? Apple places a lot on their big events, so they're not going to
slip a IOS release, unless it's a major dead on arrival kind of a bug.
KNFB seems like they're willing to take a hit a bit on postponing their
release, which by the way means delaying their revenue stream, and maybe
they're doing this to get a better and more stable product out the door.
I'm willing to wait a few weeks if it means dealing with fewer issues.
I'm sure KNFB didn't make this decision lightly, and I'm sure they had
some very smart people looking at some numbers and making a very tough
decision.

Hi Jonathan,

Correct, from what I heard iOS 8 is expected to be released to the
public on Wednesday, September 17 followed by the iPhone 6 on Friday the
19^th . I guess we'll find out on Tuesday in a week whether there will
be a 4.7 inch and a 5.5 inch iPhone 6 or if there will only be the 4.7
inch model for now with the larger one to follow later. I also heard
rumours now that an iWatch may be announced on the 9^th as well.

Maybe the expected 13 Megapixel iPhone 6 camera which is rumoured to
actually protrude a bit beyond the thickness of the phone along with
these under the hood changes will make KNFB Reader on an iPhone 6 even
better, but that certainly is not a reason why the app can't be released
for the 5S with iOS 7 unless they are just not ready to release it to
the public in which case they should just say so.

I believe KNFB are incorrect in thinking that iOS 8 will be released on
or about the 10th.

Apple's event is on the 9th. If Apple's past timetable is followed, and
they have been very consistent in recent years, the Gold master of iOS 8
will be released to developers right after the presentation.

That gives developers a few days to find absolute show stoppers, and
they would have to be absolutely huge, for any change to be made. The
iOS itself is released about a week later. That would make iOS 8 release
day the 17th.

One possible reason for KNFB delaying the release is if they are using
some of the cool new APIs in 8. There are a lot of under the hood
changes to the camera.

Further, the user likely will not hold the camera at exactly 180

being held in the hand. Some are expecting perfection or results that
are better from software 10 times the price or with equipment 10 to 20
times the price. KNFB is not claiming this level of accuracy and
reliability nor can it really. It is the limitation of the technology.
The company says it will deliver performance equal to or greater than
that of the original KNFB Reader. This technology was widely praised
at the time, but it was unaffordable to many. Now, the price point has
been dramatically lowered. If it can match or better the performance
of the original KNFB reader without using a stand or an external
lighting source, the app will be worth it to me and I suspect many
other people. I would like to read signs as I travel and hope the app
 does this effectively.

I am waiting until the product release before analyzing any more
information from the company. At the NFB convention, Jim Gashel said
the app would support the iPhone 4s in response to a question. Now,
it seems the company says the app will only support the iPhone 5
series and iPhone 6. I can imagine that final beta testing revealed
that the processor on the 4s did not deliver reasonable enough
performance. Yet, the company has now walked back from promised
 product functionality.

Sorry if this was already answered, but I didn't see it if it was.

My understanding is that it isn't just the megapiels. A lot has to do with the
actual sensor - how much light it can pick up, how wide the field is, and so
on. Then, even more depends on post-capture processing by the phone's graphics
processor. The 4S has pretty weak graphics processing compared to the 5 and
later, and its sensor is just not as good. I'm sure there are articles online
that go into way more detail, but that's the basic idea, again as I understand
it.

inches above it does not yield the same image quality with a camera
millimeters from the document surface that is completely flat and lit
with a bright light again millimeters from the document surface.
Further, the user likely will not hold the camera at exactly 180
degrees from the document, as it will take the image with the phone
being held in the hand. Some are expecting perfection or results that
are better from software 10 times the price or with equipment 10 to 20

The company says it will deliver performance equal to or greater than

been dramatically lowered. If it can match or better the performance
of the original KNFB reader without using a stand or an external
lighting source, the app will be worth it to me and I suspect many

Given all of the many changes Apple announced to the camera app at
WWDC in June, I thought it seemed a little silly to announce at the
NFB convention the release date would be two to three weeks before the
release of iOS8. Why not avoid all the goofs who download the app
right after release, don’t upgrade properly, and then complain about
the app not preforming properly. Releasing after iOS 8 would encourage
folks to install on top of the new iOS rather than the old one. From a
marketing perspective, many people in North America and Europe are on
vacation in August, going back to school, or otherwise tuned out. This
weekend, Chicago has its jazz festival. The last thing I want to do is
learn a new iPhone app on one of the last warm weekends of summer.

I agree with Sieghard, the KNFB folks likely ran out of runway and
needed to abort take off on the timeframe announced in early July,
causing us to speculate needlessly on why this company cannot properly
meet its commitments. This app has been hyped beyond belief. Will it
slice bread after it is released? People are expecting perfection and
the extraordinary. I’m waiting to learn about actual end user
experiences beyond a scripted demonstration or from the favored people
KNFB decided to allow to interact with the app.

guess
we'll find out on Tuesday in a week whether there will be a 4.7 inch and a
5.5 inch iPhone 6 or if there will only be the 4.7 inch model for now with
the larger one to follow later. I also heard rumours now that an iWatch
may
be announced on the 9th as well.

Maybe the expected 13 Megapixel iPhone 6 camera which is rumoured to
actually protrude a bit beyond the thickness of the phone along with these
under the hood changes will make KNFB Reader on an iPhone 6 even better,
but
that certainly is not a reason why the app can't be released for the 5S

iOS 7 unless they are just not ready to release it to the public in which

I believe KNFB are incorrect in thinking that iOS 8 will be released on or
about the 10th.

Apple's event is on the 9th. If Apple's past timetable is followed, and
they
have been very consistent in recent years, the Gold master of iOS 8 will
be
released to developers right after the presentation.

That gives developers a few days to find absolute show stoppers, and they
would have to be absolutely huge, for any change to be made. The iOS
itself
is released about a week later. That would make iOS 8 release day the
17th.

No, from what I've read, iOS7 will be supported. However, iOS8 offers finer

better results. That's pure speculation on my part, though.

Re: Problem with inbox and all mailboxes

2014-08-31 Thread Christopher Chaltain
OK, I see. I never delete anything from All Mail, although I know others
do. Maybe they'll chime in or you can read up more on this with a Google
search.

I just go through my in box and either move messages to a folder or
delete them. If I delete them, they show up in the Trash folder. After
about 30 days, anything in the Trash folder will be automatically deleted.

The All Mail folder simply shows everything you have in any folder, so
if you delete a message from the in box, it'll move to the trash folder,
but you'll still see it in the All Mail folder. I usually just use the
All Mail folder to look for a message I know I saved somewhere, but I
don't know what folder I placed it in.

Like I said, I just let Google do as much of the work for me as they
can, and this includes deleting my trashed messages after about 30 days.
BTW, I have to go looking into my Trash folder several times when I
accidentally deleted something before I wanted to.

Re: knfb reader

2014-08-31 Thread Kelly Pierce
When I decided to buy my first iPhone in 2012, I faced the choice of
the 4S or the new iPhone 5. What convinced me then was the knowledge
that the processor of the iPhone 5 was twice as fast as the processor
of the 4S. I believed then that this difference would enable new apps
to run on this powerful new phone that eventually could not run on the
4S. Apparently, the future is today with the KNFB reader, as key
portions of iOS 8 are not supported for 4S phones. With a camera that
preforms poorly in low light, the limitations of the 4S are becoming
obvious.

The dropping of the 4S from KNFB’s lineup of supported phones shows
why it is foolish to buy old technology, such as getting a 5C instead
of a 5S. Being locked into last year’s technology will be costlier
later when future upgrade costs are considered compared to buying the
current version now and upgrading less frequently.

I am not expecting this app to be as good as K1000 with a high quality
flatbed document scanner. Taking a picture of a document 12 to 18
inches above it does not yield the same image quality with a camera
millimeters from the document surface that is completely flat and lit
with a bright light again millimeters from the document surface.
Further, the user likely will not hold the camera at exactly 180
degrees from the document, as it will take the image with the phone
being held in the hand. Some are expecting perfection or results that
are better from software 10 times the price or with equipment 10 to 20
times the price.

Comparable Replacement Earbuds to the Bose MIE2I

2014-08-31 Thread SSEric
I lost my Bose today. Really bummed, as these were the best earbuds I have
ever tried.

I am wondering for any of you with experience with this model, can you
recommend anything comparable. I love them for the sound of course, but also
they are super comfortable, small and lightweight. I am just thinking I
might try something different, having used these for the past three years.

Just for information, these run $129. That is certainly the most I have yet
paid for earbuds and wouldn't want to go much higher. Especially, since I
just lost them...

Thanks for any suggestions!

Eric

Re: Problem with inbox and all mailboxes

2014-08-31 Thread Cheryl Homiak
This looks kind of confusing to me. I'm not sure about the terminology being
used. There are inboxes for each account, there is ALL INBOXES and then there
is ALL MAILBOXES. All mailboxes doesn't actually show any emails; it is the
hallway from which you choose the various doors into accounts and boxes. All
INBOXES shows all your incoming emails regardless of which account they came to
when sent. Each individual inbox shows the mail that came to that account so of
course mail will show up in ALL INBOXES and one of the inboxes. As for ALL
MAIL, there is or can be such a mailbox at least in gmail which would indeed
contain all messages including ones deleted according to your setup. I'm not
sure what the exact issue is here but I think the terminology being used might
be creating confusion.

any emails; it is the hallway from which you choose the various doors
into accounts and boxes. All INBOXES shows all your incoming emails
regardless of which account they came to when sent. Each individual
inbox shows the mail that came to that account so of course mail will
show up in ALL INBOXES and one of the inboxes. As for ALL MAIL, there
is or can be such a mailbox at least in gmail which would indeed
contain all messages including ones deleted according to your setup.
I'm not sure what the exact issue is here but I think the terminology
being used might be creating confusion.

Muting hash tags in the Twitter app

2014-08-31 Thread Wayne Merritt
Greetings. I am checking out the Twitter app since TweetList 4 is
crashing too often for my tastes. Is it possible to mute hash tags in
Twitter, and if so, how? I am used to triple tapping on a tweet in
TweetList but that doesn't work in Twitter. Also, a somewhat related
question, does the Twitter app remember my place in the timeline if I
leave it for a few hours? TweetList was pretty good at this for the
most part. I am using the latest app versions on an iPhone 5.

Thanks in advance,
Wayne

RE: Can VDR read material that VoiceOver cannot

VoiceOver can read PDF documents as well.
If VoiceOver can't read it, Voice Dream Reader can't either.
If the PDF is graphics and not actual text, VDR cannot read it either.
Yes, graphical PDF files can be converted to text with OCR, but you are
likely not going to get very good results unless the original PDF is
extremely good, letter quality graphics.

You open the app, go to settings, and look under sync settings and auto-refresh
settings. I have mine set up to not use cellular and to only download articles
in the background at my house (that's what the add location item is for), but
I believe you can set it to update anywhere and using cellular if you want to.
The settings will have everything you want and then some, though, so have a

Unfortunately, my wife dropped her iPhone into the toilet and I used my upgrade

Now I am going to have to pay $650 to upgrade to an iPhone 6 and another $99

If it in fact can scan in paperback books, it will be worth it to me.

RE: knfb reader

2014-08-31 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Alan,

The iPhone 3GS had a 3 MP camera, the iPhone 4 had a 5 MP and the iPhone 4S, 5,
5C and 5S all have an 8 MP camera. It is correct, however, that the same 8 MP
camera on the 5S is better than that on the 4S or 5 since the sensor has larger
pixels and it has the 2-tone flash which yields better results in low light.
And yes, I can see how the processing of the image is best on a 5S and better
on a 5 or 5C than it is on the 4S and of course it will yet be better on the
various iPhone 6 models which besides getting the A8 chip most likely will
feature a 13 MP camera.

I am not sure where you get the 8.5 Megapixel number, not that 8 MP or 8.5 MP
would mnake a big difference, but here is part of a description of the 5S
eyesight camera followed by the link to the entire article:

The new iSight camera on iPhone 5s builds on the iPhone 5 camera in ways that
make a real difference to your photos. It captures beautiful images at 8
megapixels.
What makes them beautiful is a redesigned camera sensor that allows for bigger
pixels. Bigger pixels equal better photos. And better photos are precisely what
inspired the advancements we made with the new iSight camera on iPhone 5s.

Larger sensor. Larger pixels. Larger aperture.
Light is one of the most important factors in getting a great photo. Not just
how well your subject is lit, but how sensitive your camera’s sensor is to
light.
Here’s how it works: A camera’s sensor — and the pixels on it — collect light.
The larger the sensor and the larger the pixels, the more light is collected.
And that translates to better, brighter images with truer colours and less
noise.

I would like to read signs as I travel and

So it's a push notification you are after? I thought, from your message, you
were only wanting it to update in the background, not alert you. Sorry for the
confusion. I don't think Lire can do push notifications, which I consider to be
a very good thing - I'd get hundreds of notifications throughout the day, and
if I had it tell me every x hours, I'd always get a notification, so I may as
well skip the interruption and just check the app anyway. :) I can see how push
might be nice if you are only subscribed to very few feeds, though; you can
email supp...@lireapp.com to suggest this. The developer is nice, and usually
responds well to feedback.

Hi all. Is there a way to get lire to automatically download new
articles from my subscriptions? I paid $4 for that app, so it should
be able to do something as simple as that.

Yes, my late husband dropped his 5 in the toilet most of it works but when one

Eventually I am trading it in as well as my 4S when I can get there without a

figure out what to do with a lot of junk and some not junk.
Working full time, dealing with finances which are not terrible I just never

Number of notifications still being announced in locked screen

2014-08-31 Thread Cheryl Homiak
In order to be able to have my Braille Edge paired with several devices while
keeping my Edge but losing contact with one device whenever another unlocked to
announce notifications, I chose in settings not to have notifications spoken in
locked screen. But while the noffifications themselves are not now announced in
my locked screen, my i-devices frequently come into the unlock screen in order
to announce how many notifications I have. If this was not so annoying, it
would be extremely funny! But if you don't want your notifications being
announced, in many cases this also means you don't want the fact that you have
notifications announced either! Without turning off all notifications, is there
a way to stop this? Is there a setting that actually will not speak anything
about notifications in the locked screen? I do realize that do not disturb
would be an option, but then I'd have to have do not disturb turned on pretty
much all the time.

Thanks for any suggestions.

 Cheryl
I tried and tried to turn over a new leaf.
I got crumpled wads of tear-stained paper thrown in the trash!
Then God gave me a new heart and life:
His joy for my despairing tears!
 And now, every day:
This I call to mind, and therefore I have hope:
 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
 his mercies never come to an end;
 they are new every morning;
 great is your faithfulness.
 (Lamentations 3:21-23 ESV)
