Please, does anyone use this lanyard?

2015-03-17 Thread Mária Orovčíková

Hello list,
I am upgrading my 4-years-old Iphone 4 to Iphone 6. I've ordered
Otterrbox defender from Amazon and thinking about purchasing the
following product:

iPhone Adjustable Lanyard (Neck Strap).
http://www.iphone-lanyard.com/Site/iPhone_Holder.html
I contacted the seller to ask a few questions.
They replied back telling me that the product has been sold to many
blind people and it fits the otterbox deffender case and Iphone 6.
I wasalso told that the directions to put the holder and lanyard are
very simple, but I should have a sighted person help me line up the
parts initially.

Please, is there anyone using this lanyard?
I would like to hear your opinions about this product, how
easy/difficult it is for a blind person to put it on the phone? Do I
need sighted help? Is it possible to remove it easily from the phone and
put it back any time without sighted help?

Thanks for your help in advance.
With kind regards
Maria

RE: Applications to create text documents

2015-03-17 Thread Neal Ewers
Yes, While I mentioned Access Note, I do agree with Richard about Voice Dream
Writer. It is accessible, and one can mark up, or in this case, mark down, text
files and export them to a number of formats including HTML, where headers that
are marked up in the text are honored by VoiceOver and other screen readers.
This is really nice for being able to jump around in a file and find exactly
what you want.

The best app is the new one from Voice Dream called Voice Dream Writer, $9.99
https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/voice-dream-writer/id920583100?mt=8

A great review was just done at Access World: www.afb.org/aw

But if you want free, try PlainText 2:

Also, I believe AccessNote is also free.

If anything like this exist, please someone let me know. I would like a free

A problem with Airplay to the Apple TV.

Hello, so I am able to successfully use the Airplay option, but the weird thing
is that I get Voice and the music sent to the Apple TV, with the Voiceover
sound effects on the iPhone. I want the Voiceover audio and sound effects on
the iPhone, and the music on the TV. Is there a setting I need to change?
Thanks,

A Question About Reading Continuously in iBooks in iOS 8.2

2015-03-17 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

When I perform a two-finger swipe down to initiate continuous reading in
iBooks, on my iPhone 6 Plus running iOS 8.2, I discovered that reading stops
when the display auto-lock kicks in.

In iOS 7.x, this did not occur as, regardless of the system settings, the
display would remain on during continuous reading.

Unless there is a workaround, in order to prevent iBooks continuous reading
from being interrupted, in iOS 8.2, I have to first disable the Auto-Lock.

Am I missing something?

All replies welcomed.

RE: The best app for playing music from dropbox.

2015-03-17 Thread Neal Ewers
Hi Annie, you can play files directly from DropBox, but I'm guessing you want
some way to organize them in different ways and making the playing of them
easier. I don't know of anything, but I just wanted people on the list to know
that you could play them directly in DropBox. I'll see what I can find and
perhaps others will have some information.

Re: More on the NPR One App

2015-03-17 Thread Craig Werner
Hello, Alan.

I believe that when the Interesting button is activated, the user is
telling the app that she/he would like to see more storeis of a nature
similar to the one just marked. However, the FAQ says something about
this indicator not being fully developed yet. I am traveling now and
can't look back at the details of the FAQ to give the list more
information, unfortunately.

Thanks for the NPR address to which to write. Your Googling effort
paid off. Whenever I have written to NPR, I have used the Contact
Us link from the home page and then used the various combo boxes to
direct my note to the NPR One app section.

Thanks for this additional info about the NPR One app.

I have written NPR Digital Services at i...@ds.npr.org to tell them about
the Share button not being accessible to VoiceOver. As I recall, the share
button is below the story summary and to the right. The only thing that
VoiceOver announces is the word interesting which is just below the story
summary and in the middle. I'm not sure what the purpose of the interesting
button is since nothing happens when I double tap it. If I turn VoiceOver
off, the share button appears to be to the right of interesting and does
bring up the usual sharing options when pressed with VoiceOver off.
 However,
with VoiceOver on, accessing the share button is not available.

I got the above NPR Digital Services address when I googled NPR One and
support and found a contact us link on the page at the top of the hits
 list.

I'd suggest others write NPR at that address who use the NPR One app and
request that they make the share button accessible.

 Hello, Keith and Alan.

I have been playing with NPR One on and off for perhaps a month. It's
quite accessible although I cannot find the
Share button from within each news story. When the heading on the
screen changes from History to Coming Up, Voiceover does not
announce the change, but, of course, one can detect it by flicking on
the screen. If a user marks an item as Interesting, VoiceOver does
not announce selected or marked. I suggest reading the NPR One
FAQ, available on the NPR site. Feedback is solicited, and one can
send a note from within the app or by using the general Contact Us
form on the NPR site by drilling down through the various combo boxes
until the form for the NPR One app is reached. I have sent a couple
of emails to NPR, and I have received replies that the messges will be
responded to; but after perhaps three weeks of waiting, no joy.
Emails seem to be treated by NPR as strictly feedback; that is, one
 should not expect replies.

Subject: A Question About Reading Continuously in iBooks in iOS 8.2

Hello Everyone,

When I perform a two-finger swipe down to initiate continuous reading in
iBooks, on my iPhone 6 Plus running iOS 8.2, I discovered that reading stops
when the display auto-lock kicks in.

In iOS 7.x, this did not occur as, regardless of the system settings, the
display would remain on during continuous reading.

Unless there is a workaround, in order to prevent iBooks continuous reading
from being interrupted, in iOS 8.2, I have to first disable the Auto-Lock.

Am I missing something?

All replies welcomed.

2015-03-17 Thread carol.pearso...@googlemail.com
Yes, I always think that's a bit odd, but guess we're feeling from the back
of our phone which is towards us and the phone's screen points away from us.
A sighted person would want to see the screen.

Anyway, if you havfe used a Perkins then you wwill hopefully be able to find
a setting that suits you.

Are you using the braille keyboard which is part of IOS8 or do you have
mBraille? Just curious, because mBraille has a number of settings you can
choose, while the braille in the system seems to react to your hand/finger
position.

If you're still really stuck but want to make this a part of life and write
in this way, write me off list and I'll see what I can advise further.

Subject: braille screen input orientation

Hi. It seems that whenever the landscape mode is active for braille
screen input, I have to hold the phone opposite of what it says. In
other words, it says, home button to the left, but the home button is to
the right, and vice versa. Also, the dots for the writing in braille
seem to be pretty low on the screen, maybe I'm just not used to the
braille input, which I'm not, i just turned it on last week. But with
the weird landscape thing, I don't know why voiceover thinks the home
button is the opposite of what I'm holding the phone. I have to reverse
my braille letters, like a slate. I feel kind of dumb, really. i'm
probably making it more complicated, but so far it's taking me much
longer to type in braille than print, usually it's the reverse.

help? Thanks, Dave

Re: App that announces elapsed time

2015-03-17 Thread Graham
Hi,

When you open the App, at the top left is the settings button.
In there you can choose whether you want a male or female voice, determine how
often you need spoken announcements whether you want the timer to count up once
its counted down, to repeat the count down or just finish after it has counted
down.
The done button is situated towards the bottom left of the screen.

On the main screen when you open the App, near the left edge about a quarter
way down the screen is a button which increases the count down or count up time
by one minute. Below this is the decrease button.
On the righthand side on the same level are the increase and decrease by one
second buttons.
Towards the bottom of the screen is the start count down button.
If you want to stop the timer towards the bottom of the screen is a slider,
double tap and hold this and slide quickly to the right after hearing three or
so quick tones.
On the right you will then have a button that says resume or reset timer.
I hope this is of some use.
When I ran on the treadmill I used bluetooth earphones started my music, then
paused it, went in to the timer and started it counting down then double tapped
the screen so I could listen to my music. The count down voice is still
audible.

Warm regards

Graham

Subject: App that announces elapsed time

 Hi All,

I'm looking for an app that can be set to announce elapsed time at
user defined intervals. For example, while running on the treadmill I
would like to have an app that would announce the elapsed time every
five minutes. I know there is a stop watch function already on the
iPhone, but I would like to not have to touch the phone to hear the
 elapsed time.

 Is there such an app?

 Thanks in advance,
 Kimber

Re: braille screen input orientation

2015-03-17 Thread Teresa Cochran
I don't know if this is a glitch or not, as I'm not sure what the intention
would be if it was done on purpose. I do not pretend it's a slate. That option
is extremely confusing for me. In tabletop mode, I simply flip my iPod so that
the screen is facing me, then flip it back to tabletop mode, and this sets the
orientation so that dots 1-2-3 are on the left, and dots 4-5-6 are on the
right. For screen-away mode, I always find that it orients with the home button
on the right.

Re: braille screen input orientation

2015-03-17 Thread Alex Hall
It makes sense, because the screen faces away from you. Think of it this way:
to someone looking at the screen, where is the button. As you face it, it's,
say, on your left. Once you turn it around to face away from you, so you can
type braille, it's facing the other way. Now, the button is on the right to
someone looking head-on at the screen (facing you as you type).

No matter what it says, though, you don't need to reverse anything. Your left
index finger is still dot 1, your right pinky is still dot 6, and the other
fingers are all also unchanged. Think of it like typing on a brill keyboard
that happens to be hanging on your shoulder and is thus perpendicular to the
floor; an odd position, but once you fix the dot assignments in your mind, one
that quickly becomes familiar.

Let’s not be overdramatic either. Maybe sometimes things just accidentally get

Re: Radio on the NCAA March madness app

2015-03-17 Thread Mary Otten
Well, the iPad experience is different. When I opened up March madness on my
iPad mini, and I selected the game, immediately the video started to play. So I
didn't get the chance to pick the radio icon. So I selected a game that is
going to be on tomorrow and double tap to that. So naturally no video came on.
But I also did not see the radio icon. So if anybody knows how to get radio on
the iPad, I would be very interested. The iPad has much better battery life
then my poor phone, which gets used for so many other things. With regard to
the iPad, I have no idea why it automatically started playing the video. I
would like to stop that, but have not figured out how to make that happen
either. The layout on the iPad is definitely different.

Applications to create text documents

Hello everyone,
First of all, let me say that I always appreciate all the help I get from
people on this list. It is great to have the help, when you don't know what to
look for.
As my subject says, I am interested in applications where you can create text
files. Does anything like this exist?
I need to be able to create multiple text files. I need to be able to do this
on a weekly basis. I need a program that is quite accessible.
If anything like this exist, please someone let me know. I would like a free
program if possible please.
Thank you for any help, I really do appreciate it.

make sure the schedule button is selected. It is selected by default. The other
choice is brackets. Those buttons are at the top of the screen under the status
bar. Underneath those buttons are various things that don't identify as
tappable, but they have to do with which part of the schedule you want to see.

Once you have selected the round you want, below that list of rounds, you
should see the games. Again, there is no indication that you could double tap
on that was to get anything. However, double tapping on one takes you to a
screen where you should see near the top and icon that refers to radio. Double
tapping that starts the radio play back. That icon is not present if the game
is not yet on. Double tapping at' same icon if the radio is playing, will turn
off. I hope that helps.
Mary

Best Buy has lost a good deal of accessibility with its last update as well

As my subject says, I am interested in applications where you can create text

I need to be able to create multiple text files. I need to be able to do this

If anything like this exist, please someone let me know. I would like a free

RE: Something Is Wrong With The Amazon Update

2015-03-17 Thread Alan Lemly
Arnold,

I'm getting the same issue and I also updated my Amazon app earlier today.

What I'm seeing is a list of the search results with a photo of each item in
the list at the left edge of the screen. Placing focus on this photo results
in a VoiceOver click sound but nothing is spoken. There is text to the right
of each photo with a short title of the item which VO does speak and which
can be double tapped to drill down to a more detailed screen.

I guess we need to write Amazon about this accessibility shortcoming and
thanks for bringing it to our attention.

I hope this is just on my iphone 5, running 8.2. After updating the
Amazon app, when I search for something, I can no longer swipe to read my
results. Neither can I use explore by touch to read them. When I first
launch the app, I can read the main screen, access the links, and can add to
my cart. So far, the problem only is after I search for something. I have
only had this app update for an hour or two, so other problems may turn up.
I had to use Amazon via Safari to complete my search. Is anybody else
having problems? I hope not. Thanks in advance for any opinions.

I have no clue if any of these are accessible, or if they are still up to date.
Doing a search on the applevis.com site might render anything that may be

Subject: Need to record distance walked with the iPhone

I am looking for a way to tell how far I have walked using the iPhone. I like
to walk around my neighborhood but I can't really tell how far I have walked.
I was wondering if there is an app that I can use to do this. I would like it
to use GPS to tell me how far it is from my starting point to my ending point.
My walking path goes in a loop and traditional GPS mapping apps don't like this
and keep urging me to turn back home.

Something Is Wrong With The Amazon Update

2015-03-17 Thread Arnold Schmidt
I hope this is just on my iphone 5, running 8.2. After updating the Amazon
app, when I search for something, I can no longer swipe to read my results.
Neither can I use explore by touch to read them. When I first launch the app,
I can read the main screen, access the links, and can add to my cart. So far,
the problem only is after I search for something. I have only had this app
update for an hour or two, so other problems may turn up. I had to use Amazon
via Safari to complete my search. Is anybody else having problems? I hope
not. Thanks in advance for any opinions.

RE: External mic for iPhone

2015-03-17 Thread Neal Ewers
Hi, You can do what you want with the IQ 6. You can’t physically separate the
microphones, but you can change angles, and you can place two people so each is
facing one particular microphone. You can do the same thing with the other Zoom
microphones as well, but the thing I don’t like about inexpensive MS
microphones is that under some circumstances, the stereo image sounds out of
focus such that it sounds like people are not coming from the place they really
are. XY Microphones do not have this problem.

Thanks so much for the podcast link. The sound quality is very good for the
mic. Since there are two microphones can one be pointed at the interviewer and
the other at the person being interviewed? I will be using this device to
conduct interviews on the go and not in a silent room. Which of the Zoom

Battery Percentage?

2015-03-17 Thread Debbie Downey
Hi all,

I've noticed that since I upgraded my IPhone 5S to IOS 8.2 that the battery

In the rotor settings, there's a punctuation setting. When it's on None, no
punctuation will be spoke including percentages. The other settings, I
believe, are Some and All. Hope this helps.

Hi,

When you open the App, at the top left is the settings button.
In there you can choose whether you want a male or female voice, determine
how often you need spoken announcements whether you want the timer to count
up once its counted down, to repeat the count down or just finish after it
has counted down.
The done button is situated towards the bottom left of the screen.

On the main screen when you open the App, near the left edge about a quarter
way down the screen is a button which increases the count down or count up
time by one minute. Below this is the decrease button.
On the righthand side on the same level are the increase and decrease by one
second buttons.
Towards the bottom of the screen is the start count down button.
If you want to stop the timer towards the bottom of the screen is a slider,
double tap and hold this and slide quickly to the right after hearing three
or so quick tones.
On the right you will then have a button that says resume or reset timer.
I hope this is of some use.
When I ran on the treadmill I used bluetooth earphones started my music,
then paused it, went in to the timer and started it counting down then
double tapped the screen so I could listen to my music. The count down voice
is still audible.

Warm regards

Re: Music Streaming app preferences.

2015-03-17 Thread Traci Duncan
Just in case anyone has Amazon Prime, don’t forget about Amazon Prime Music. I
really like it as a way to try out an entire album, before deciding if I want
to buy the whole thing, or just a handful of tracks.

I have to say though, Pandora remains my favorite. I stopped Pandora One last
year, but miss it from time to time. For my music tastes, I get better results
via Pandora than iTunes radio, when creating customizing my stations.

Another sort of streaming service is Songza. It is great fun for mood,
activity, genre, decade, etc.

Re: Sirius.Xm App

2015-03-17 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hi Steve. First off, I wasn't griping about the app, this was my own personal
opinion that the app may not be as accessible as others would like it to be.
Also, the reason I like Radium is because I can use it both on my iOS device
and my Mac. I don't need the My SXM feature because if I wanted something like
that, I could use Accuradio since iTunes Radio won't be available in Canada
anytime soon. And also with the My SXM feature, you don't have unlimited skips
like Accuradio has. Again, these are personal opinions and preferences, and
it's funny how people mistake these things for bitching.

 by the on-line channels.
You do need to label the bottom buttons.
But, it is quite usable, including looking for on-demand shows and setting up
 MySXM to customize each channel.

If people would play with the app a bit, instead of griping about it, then
you can learn how to work with SiriusXM.
The only thing that Radium has a true advantage is that there is no necessity
to tap the Keep Listening button after an hour or ninety minutes, whatever
 the SiriusXm default is now.

Re: App that announces elapsed time

2015-03-17 Thread Kimber Gardner
Thanks for the very thorough description and instructions. It helps a
lot. This app is just what I was looking for.

On 3/17/15, Graham grahamnr...@googlemail.com wrote:

 Graham

Need to record distance walked with the iPhone

2015-03-17 Thread David Cleveland
I am looking for a way to tell how far I have walked using the iPhone. I like
to walk around my neighborhood but I can't really tell how far I have walked.
I was wondering if there is an app that I can use to do this. I would like it
to use GPS to tell me how far it is from my starting point to my ending point.
My walking path goes in a loop and traditional GPS mapping apps don't like this
and keep urging me to turn back home.

Re: Music Streaming app preferences.

2015-03-17 Thread Richard Turner
I still use the free version. I have a large enough CD collection that I've
imported that I don't feel I can justify spending that much a month for
checking out other music, so I choose to put up with commercials.
I have almost 9000 songs on my iPhone and that isn't my entire CD collection.

2015-03-17 Thread Tim Emmons
Kimber, I’m the same way, and think Spotify is going to be the way I go. Right
now I can only swing the free, but on the iPad I can listen to whole albums
with limited commercials so I think I can make do until I get the premium. That
way, I can listen commercial free to whole albums on both the iPhone and IPad,
but Spotify is definitely starting to be the way I go. I thought iTunes Radio
was going to me my route forever, and I always found myself wondering what the
rest of an album sounded like and going back to Sotify to find it. If I tried
to buy all the music I wanted I’d be broke for sure, all the time, Lol. But
this is looking like the way to go. Thanks for your input. I’m liking the
playlists and liking that I can make my own this could get fun. Lol. Thanks
again and take care.

Using the speak Screen function will let the book continue when the screen

All replies welcomed.

braille screen input orientation

2015-03-17 Thread Dave Bahr

RE: Please, does anyone use this lanyard?

2015-03-17 Thread Rick Alfaro
I'd be very interested as well with anyone else's experience with this holder.
To me it sounds like the holder becomes a part of your current case through
adhesive. Not sure I would like having to dedicate my case for exclusive use of
this holder.

Best regards,

Rick Alfaro

Subject: Please, does anyone use this lanyard?

Hello list,
I am upgrading my 4-years-old Iphone 4 to Iphone 6.
Maria

Here's an app that I have used in the past. The app is accessible with VO. And
the app does what you want plus more. The drawback, for me anyway, to get the
full features of the app there is a $6.00 monthly charge or $30.00 yearly
charge.

Re: Sirius.Xm App

2015-03-17 Thread Steve
The only thing I don't like about siriusxm is the name of the channel isn't
read, but you can usually tell what they are by the song it is playing and the
category which are denoted. The XM channels are listed first, followed by the
on-line channels.
You do need to label the bottom buttons.
But, it is quite usable, including looking for on-demand shows and setting up
MySXM to customize each channel.

If people would play with the app a bit, instead of griping about it, then you
can learn how to work with SiriusXM.
The only thing that Radium has a true advantage is that there is no necessity
to tap the Keep Listening button after an hour or ninety minutes, whatever the
SiriusXm default is now.

iTreadmill is accessible and gives you distance and calories burned. It also
allows you to use music along with your walking. I have been using the new
health app that IOS 8 gives us but I'm not convinced the data is as accurate

 Tip of the Day:

Set a Volume Limit on Your iPhone

How many times have you put in your headphones and
started playing music only to get spooked by how loud your volume was? In
today's tip, we'll show you how to set a volume limit on your iPhone in order
to protect your ears or those of your children.

First, you’ll want to open your Settings application,
then scroll down and tap Music. Here you can see different options for music
playback. Tap Volume Limit to adjust the maximum volume your phone outputs
through its speaker or through any connected headphones.

After tapping Volume Limit, you’ll see a slider that
you can drag left or right to set your phone’s volume limit. In the main Music
Settings menu, you will see that Volume Limit now says “On” if you’ve set the
limit to anything other than the maximum amount.

Microsoft word is free and is great. You can use dropbox or one drive to import
or export your files. If you want all the extra features of Microsoft Word, you
must have a office 365 account. I suggest you try this application before
investing on the other applications if you're looking for free. Regards,
Feliciano

 Hello everyone,
First of all, let me say that I always appreciate all the help I get from
people on this list. It is great to have the help, when you don't know what
 to look for.

RE: A problem with Airplay to the Apple TV.

2015-03-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
You probably have Audio Ducking turned off, turn it back on (the default) and
your problem with Airplay should go away. There is, however, still another bug
which you will most likely encounter. At least for me and for some others SIRI
will not work after using Airplay with Voiceover turned on. If I use Airplay I
have to restart my phone in order to get SIRI functionality back.

Subject: A problem with Airplay to the Apple TV.

Thanks,

Matthew
