Re: westnet myplace blah
Questions from WestNet : Does Retrospect offer a 1 step backup to FTP, or is it a case of backing up with Retrospect, and then FTPing the file up for off-site protection? Unless it's a fairly basic one step product, it would be difficult to offer, because the support aspect would be horrendous. If I understand .Mac correctly, it's an Apple service, and not something we could offer (we could point customers to it of course). Is that correct? They are listening to us. It's a shame they don't have the internet at Westnet, I hear it's good for looking things up... Retrospect will back up directly to an FTP server. I wouldn't classify it as 'fairly basic' as Retrospect has a large number of options. The OEM version of Retrospect (that's bundled with various products) might be more basic, but I'm not sure if handles FTP (or if Westnet would count as an OEM for Dantz's purposes) .Mac is an Apple service they could point their customers at http://www.mac.com/ There's a backup link in the left hand column. http://www.mac.com/1/iTour/tour_backup.html Have fun, Shay -- === Shay Telfer Perth, Western Australia Technomancer Join Team Sungroper in the Opinions for hire [POQ] 2005 World Solar Challenge http://public.xdi.org/=Shayfnord http://sungroper.asn.au/

OS X and Canon CanoScan Film Scanners?
looking at getting something cheaper than a Nicon CoolScan (owchy owchy price wise) to digitise my family's large collection of negatives and slides. I notice Gerry Gibbs have a CanoScan FS 4000 which seems to exceed my requirements performance wise (and only really exceed my budget by a almost tolerable amount) however I had to search Canons site to find any mention of this (or any other dedicated film scanners) and find that the last mention of it was in late 2001 and only offering mac drivers for Mac OS 9.x or lower. I guess all I'm interested in is Twain drivers for Photoshop but the FARE automated retouch (dust and noise) software looks like it would be far better than Photoshops remove dust and scratches filter (as FARE examines the film for actual physical surface damage/imperfections rather than post scan guessing which often results in any fine lines being blurred out) anybody have any experience with the CanoScan FS range under OSX? -- ~ Mark Secker Computer Support Officer ph#6488 1855 (ECEL) mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] University of Western Australia - CRICOS Provider No. 00126G ~ Only he who attempts the absurd is capable of achieving the impossible. - Miguel de Unamuno It takes an idiot to do cool things that's why it's cool - Haruhara Haruka (FLCL) http://ecel-mark.ecel.uwa.edu.au/~marksecker/index.htm (sometimes works)

This means that I can check to see if anything has been blocked that shouldn't have been blocked, and I can manage the spam filter to let email from that source come through. What I particularly like is that the service staff don't try to hide behind excuses. If there's a problem, it's acknowledged and efforts made to resolve it. Follow-up courtesy calls are made, too, to see if any further issues have arisen. Michael Hawkins. Hi Michael, We agree totally with you. I have been with WestNet almost since the time when 'Chris Thomas' started WestNet. I have remained a strong supporter of them, and believe they deserved to have been voted the Number 1 ISP in Australia for Customer Service for the last couple of years. However, it was brought to our attention on our list of a few concerns some members were experiencing. So I contacted WestNet Management re these 'issues' , they answered, and asked me to give them constructive feedback. They are improving all the time and want to be able to serve the Mac community better. -- I congratulated Chris Thomas last year after they were voted No. 1 ISP this is part of his reply: Start of Quote: A few years ago we created an ambitious mission statement “to be recognised as the best Internet Service Provider in Australia through outstanding customer service and providing premium quality Internet access, at a fair cost, no matter where you are in Australia”. Ultimately we weren’t going to be satisfied until we achieved this. Through the Australian Broadband Survey in 2003, and now the ACNielsen survey, we believe we have achieved it, and that’s a huge credit to our team. Fortunately that’s not the end of the story. We see room for massive improvement in our current performance, right across the board. To be recognised as number 1, and to still see so much room for improvement, is a good thing for us, but it probably means that the Internet industry is not performing as well as it should be. I think we’ll see a big improvement from all those ISPs that are going to be around for the long term. Our mission statement is not going to change, so you should see services improve, and hopefully we can stay ahead of the rest of the pack as they all improve as well. End of Quote -- I have added below an interview with Chris Thomas. Chris Thomas, Perth Founded WestNet (www.westnet.com.au) How did you get started? I was working for the Department of Defence in Geraldton, WA, and there were no ISPs there. In 1994, I set up a Geraldton-wide web and e-mail server so that anybody who had local call access could let me know they wanted to get started learning the technology. In August 1995, we got a link to Perth and in November 1996 we got acquired by Mitchell Brown Communications, which brought [business] balance and judgment. I loved what I was doing, and didn't mind losing money [initially] because I figured it would come good. In January 1999, we put in an access server in Perth. We were around 5000 customers at the time of the takeover and have 25,000 now. What's the biggest challenge? A lot of the things that can be really frustrating about Telstra are their anti-competitive, monopolistic attitudes. A lot of what goes on in the background can really bug you but you've got to let those issues be resolved outside of your negotiations with the company. It's up to the umpire [the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission] to say what they can and can't do. They're just a company looking after their bottom line. What does it take to succeed? The key thing is that you've got to have great management. And you have to be absolutely passionate about the job, and want to know everything about how everything works. It's not the sort of job where you can just be someone who does this and goes home at 5pm and isn't really interested. If you're really fascinated by this stuff, you'll be working 10 to 15 hours a day and won't notice it that much. Cheers, Ronni When Microsoft asks you, Where do you want to go today? Re: Airport Extreme Interference
I'm wondering if there is a solution to this. When I first installed the airport extreme base station it worked perfectly. I could move my laptop around the 54sqm office get the internet etc. Then about 6 weeks ago the airport just dropped out and it would go on sometimes and off others. I recently had a techo come out and check it and he said all was fine and maybe there was someone in the area that is using a 2.4Ghz phone and that was rendering the airport useless. I get a few hours use at various times of the day but this is pretty much useless to me because I need to transfer files all the time. Does this mean the airport and the two airport cards that I bought were a waste of money? Or is there something I can do about it? Thanks in advance. Regards Chris Griffiths

My first test would be to see if the problem lies with the hardware itself. The best way to do that is to have the two devices close together (less than a meter) and see what gives. It is possible, though unlikely that a 2.4Ghz phone would cause all traffic to stop, because the whole point of the way they both work, the phone and your wireless gear is that they shift channels around if there is interference and both you and the phone would interfere with each other. The next test would be to change channels on all your wireless gear and see if that makes any difference. Finally, most wireless communications has no need to be running at maximum speed, in my case for example, the satellite link can at most provide 1Mbit, so my wireless gear doesn't have to run any faster than that. Slower wireless connections travel further and are more resistant to interference. Of course there are going to be some differing opinions on the above advise, but I suppose you have to start somewhere. I should also point out that I'm not a radio technician, and the above is a result of having fiddled for some years, not from any formal research or otherwise. Re: Airport Extreme Interference
Chris Can you be a little more specific about what you mean when you say it doesn't work? Open Internet Connect and check the signal level to ensure your machine is still talking to the Airport. Then in the bottom of the Airport window in Internet Connect you will get information about whether you are connected to the Internet or not. I know that I get flaky performance sometimes on Airport (Snow base station) when I still have signal in the menu bar display but Internet Connect shows me my Internet connection keeps flapping. Have a quick look at that and let us know the results. We may be able to give more direction then. Thanks Shay, I can rule out the card in the laptop not working properly because I have another mac with a card installed that does the exact same thing as the laptop (i.e. when the laptop is not connecting, that computer is not connecting, when the laptop has a fuzzy signal, the computer has a fuzzy signal). Re: Airport Extreme Interference
Wireless networking is not as easy as it sounds and their are some basic principals you need to be aware of... Cisco have a good basic wifi book that is sold at Angus and Robertson (no need to trek in to Perth to Boffins) Old microwave ovens can cause this problem too. Really because all WiFi equipment operate on unregulated frequency area they can be jammed by other equipment operating around the same frequency. If you have the old TiBook not that they have very poor reception and can be very susceptible to even minor moves and orientation changes - mine can sometimes drop from 80% to below 25% just by rotating it about 15 degrees. note that 11.g is only rated to roughly 15 meters away from basestation then your best dropping to 11.b speed beyond that. my biggest problem with my home WiFi is reflections from the neighbors metal car port and when ever they park their metal covered trailer next to the room with the base-station reception drops (signal strength stays the same but packet count goes up and bandwidth goes down meaning a lot of reflected scrambled packets) an interesting thing is that I have Venetian blinds between my laptop and base-staion (just don't ask, OK!) and with them partly open to about 25 degrees I get a better signal strength than fully open or fully closed. in addition to that which have already been suggested 1: download this http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19621 on to your laptop and walk around your office area noting hot and cold WiFi spots when you hit a cold or hotspot below 25% above 75% stop and turn around 360 degrees on the spot and see how that affects strength. See how this relates to furniture, fittings and line of sight to the base-station. 2: check to see that any furniture you have (particularly metal filing cabinets or metal framed shelving) have been moved in the time the problems started... try moving them away from anywhere near the line of sight between client and base station. Also move any transformers such as the ones for halogen or fluro desk lights away from your computer and base-station. 3: go outside or check out other offices in your building and see if there are any new structures within 20 Meters or so of your base-station... maybe the office next door got a new rollo (sp?) archive cabinet one area I support had half their buildings single base-station wifi network effectively killed by one of these. 4:repositioning the base-station, move it to as central location as possible - even hang it upside down from the center of the ceiling if you can :) If you have PoE (power over Ethernet) on both your base station (model M9397X/A) and your broadband hub then you only need a longer Ethernet cable 5: buy a directional antenna for the base station.. though you can get some sexy spy dish looking ones that focus so tight you can shoot 11.g several Klm in a narrow beam what you want is one that puts out a fairly broad spread (90 to 180 deg) along a fairly narrow plain (so not wasting signal strength been sent up to the roof or down to the floor. 6: buy another base-station to act as a repeater :( I'm wondering if there is a solution to this. Re: Airport Extreme Interference
Both computers get there signal from the Airport Extreme base station and normally they are both about 3 metres from it. Have you installed the Airport Firmware updates? I'd also try poking its reset button and reconfiguring it from scratch. Good luck, Shay (wondering hopefully why the iTunes music store is offline at the moment :) -- === Shay Telfer Perth, Western Australia Technomancer Join Team Sungroper in the Opinions for hire [POQ] 2005 World Solar Challenge http://public.xdi.org/=Shayfnord http://sungroper.asn.au/

Thanks Shay, Do the updates come directly from the Update Software facility? If they do, yes, I have. I have also reset the base station but as yet I haven't had it reconfigured from scratch. Extract from IT news. Tiger on CD's
APPLE'S new version 10.4 of its Mac OS X operating system, known as Tiger, will be available from 6pm on Friday and distributed on DVD discs rather than CD-ROMs. In Australia it will cost $199, $30 less than Apple has been charging for the 10.3 version or Panther. Like previous versions of Mac OS X, it runs only on the newer Macs that have PowerPC G3, G4 or G5 microprocessors. But not all Macs with these chips have DVD drives as well. Those who have such machines can install Tiger by buying Tiger CDs for only $14.95 when purchasing Mac OS X Tiger. This includes GST. So for owners of these lowlier Macs, the price of the new system becomes $213.95. To get the CDs, owners must first buy the DVD version, download, fill in a special Tiger Media Exchange form and send it in to a mailing address with a proof-of-purchase coupon and the Tiger install DVD disc. Orders must be mailed by July 9. This is an unnecessarily complicated, expensive and time-consuming procedure. Apple could simply give all buyers their choice of DVD or CD discs at the same price. Other requirements for running Tiger include at least 256MB of random access memory, at least 3GB of available hard drive space and, for so far unexplained reasons, a built-in FireWire connection.

Apple could simply give all buyers their choice of DVD or CD discs at the same price. And while they are at it, provide single language CDs again for different regions. Let's think of more ways we can bump up the price! :-) Other requirements for running Tiger include at least 256MB of random access memory, at least 3GB of available hard drive space and, for so far unexplained reasons, a built-in FireWire connection. Umm, to make sure that sub-rate Macs can't load Tiger. From all the cool things I saw Tiger do last night at the Apple resellers demo, tray load iMacs, most clamshell iBooks, and any other machines still running a 4 or 8 meg ATI chipset will not run any of the cool stuff. Its like running OS 9 on pre G3 machines - you can do it, but the experience sucks :-) Apple are in the business to create the best possible computing experience through hardware and software. If it means leaving 6 year old machines behind, then good on them. I hate it when people write trite articles like this one from IT News. No doubt the luddite wrote it on his Apple II Plus, still bitter at Apple when they moved from DOS 3.3 to ProDOS ;-) Seeya Rod!

Who would have thought. We've been waiting for the iTMS for how many years? Not that it bothers me really. I will never be prepared to buy material that has restrictions on what I'm able to do with it. guess what... when you buy music like a CD or tape you automatically have legal restrictions placed on you about what you can do with it anyway... because you are ownly buying the rights to listen to it (rather than the music its self) Very true but these laws are pretty easy to ignore since they aren't really enforced in any way. If the format was also offered in MP3 I'd be more than happy to use the system but the record companies would never let that happen. simple... burn ACC to CD in iTunes - rip tune back to iTunes... or if your to cheap to use a CD-R then re use a CD-RW Wow. I never expected it would be so easy. I guess I just assumed that it would be a lot more difficult to transfer the file into a MP3 since part of the design behind ACC was supposed to prevent piracy. Perhaps I could see myself using the ITMS, that is if it ever comes out over here in Australia. One thing though... I heard that making an MP3 from an existing MP3 greatly degrades the quality of the file because it has already been compressed. Since ACC is also a format for compression is this rule applicable? I'm not quite sure if converting into standard CD audio before encoding will bypass this.\ Ruben A. Franke hmmm false alarm by the looks Nope. Just get the twirling candy cane and Accessing Music Store. Seeya Rod! On 29/04/2005, at 12:16 PM, Matthew Healey wrote: Looks like they might be updating it.
