Re: Printing problem

2006-03-14 Thread Rob Findlay
I had a similar situation with a Mac recently. Even Printer Setup Repair
which is the Rolls Royce of this sort of thing didn't fix it. It turned out
be a whole bunch files in the /Library/Printers/PPD's folder. Things like
Photoshop plugins which someone had inadvertently drag dropped in there.
So when page setup was invoked the printing system tries get all of the
possible PPD's and trying to read those odd files, just hangs.
It's most likely something in this Library/Printers folder which isn't
supposed to be there.

Repair do its stuff to no avail. Interestingly, if I ignore Page
Setup it will print or fax successfully.

You've described the problem well. In addition to Rob's suggestions,
it could be an EPSON-specific problem: have you investigated their
technical support options? To help narrow this down, can you please
create a faux printer and see if it's Page Setup works or fails? To do
this, go into Printer Setup and choose the IP Printer icon. Leave it
on LPD, then choose 'localhost' for the address (I assume printer
sharing is turned OFF on the iMac), and for Print Using, choose
Generic PostScript Printer. Add this printer (optionally set it as
your default), and try Page Setup...what happens?

I have a horrible feeling that the advice is going to be a clean
 install of the system.

I strongly doubt it's necessary. The problem is that if you're not
near anyone who can physical attend to your machine, reinstall is
simply the catch-all. However, as you suspect, if the problem is
corrupt preferences in your home directory then a reinstallation might
 not provide any benefit.

For corrupt preference, go to the folder Home Library Preferences
and look for files starting with com.epson... and
com.apple.print You could move them to the trash, log out, log
back in, re-select your printer and see if there is any difference.
Also, reboot after setting up the EPSON printer in case the EPSON
software is not starting up properly.

 James.

No working USB Ports on my ibook

2006-03-14 Thread Andrew Bennett

G'day folks,

I have a G4 ibook that has all of a sudden lost both USB ports.
Everything was working fine and then all of sudden both of them are
dead as a doornail... I suspect the better half has been a little
heavy handed when disconnecting the USB keyboard however...

the local Mac place quoted me $1200 for a new motherboard..
So now I face the dilemma of buying a new imac/book for a few hundred
dollars more and then keeping the ibook as a non-usb 'puter..

Anyone else found a different fault that may not require a new
motherboard?

Thanks in advance

Andrew :o)

HI Andrew!

Try booting off a CD and see if your ports show up. If not, its pretty
much all bads news from here.

And a tip for new laptop buyers - get AppleCare within the first year of
purchase! I know people that have broken laptops don't want to hear
that tired old record, but in this case the Applecare would have paid
for itself 3 times over.

In saying that Andrew, it might be cheaper for you to trade in the iBook
and buy a new one. If you can get $500-odd dollars as a trade in, a new
one will only cost you a grand (the lower spec one). Cheaper than a new
board. If it is a 14 iBook, then it would be cheaper to repair.

Hi Merv

Yes I did mean Apple's Mail.app.
I use Thunderbirbird so under MailPreferencesGeneralDefault Email

In the 'old' days there was a preference pane in System prefs but now
one needs to set the default mail app from within Mail.app's prefs, same
for browsers where you do it from Safari's prefs.

I hope I'm on the right track as I have never used Eudora.

Hi Paul
1	The version of Mail that I have with OS X 10.2.8 is v 1.2.5.
Its preference panels do not contain a General option. Screen shots
of Mail with 10.4 do have such. Mail seems to come with the System
so unless I upgrade I won't have all the preferences that you have.
2	I wonder whether we are talking at cross-purposes. In Eudora
I can set up Mozilla so that when I click on an URL in Eudora the
site opens in Mozilla. However, what I want is the situation that
when I am in Mozilla and an email address is given in the web page, a
click on the email address or 'contact us' will take me to Eudora. I
can do this with Internet Explorer and I think a protocol helper in
the preferences of IE facitated this connection. I'm moving away
from IE hence all the interest in Mozilla.
3	I have always preferred the freedom and speed of a
stand-alone email application - not something lumbered with a
browser, and so I use Eudora. It has a range of features (most of
which I don't use so I get four or five emails at each download that
offer me a better sex life) which an enthusiast would wish to use.
It comes in three form, lite, sponsored and the fully purchased. I
use the sponsored and because my needs are simple and it does all
that I require.

Hardware VPN's

Re: Hardware VPN's

2006-03-14 Thread Rob Findlay
I could be wrong but I don't think the Netgear works with Mac. It has a
dedicated client for windows. I set a couple up as an end to end VPN where
they bind with each other which works well. I had a quick go at getting a
Mac to work with it in client/server mode with no luck, had a look on their
site and found that you are supposed to install a client program to talk to
it (Windows only I think). Perhaps they have a Mac one now.
This could be all wrong but that was my impression, pleased to hear
otherwhise!
