Re: Printing problem
I had a similar situation with a Mac recently. Even Printer Setup Repair which is the Rolls Royce of this sort of thing didn't fix it. It turned out be a whole bunch files in the /Library/Printers/PPD's folder. Things like Photoshop plugins which someone had inadvertently drag dropped in there. So when page setup was invoked the printing system tries get all of the possible PPD's and trying to read those odd files, just hangs. It's most likely something in this Library/Printers folder which isn't supposed to be there. On 13/3/06 5:51 PM, James Devenish [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: On 13/03/06, Severin Crisp [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: As before, Page Setup hangs as does an attempt to retrieve the printer information from Printer Setup. I have let Printer Setup Repair do its stuff to no avail. Interestingly, if I ignore Page Setup it will print or fax successfully. You've described the problem well. In addition to Rob's suggestions, it could be an EPSON-specific problem: have you investigated their technical support options? To help narrow this down, can you please create a faux printer and see if it's Page Setup works or fails? To do this, go into Printer Setup and choose the IP Printer icon. Leave it on LPD, then choose 'localhost' for the address (I assume printer sharing is turned OFF on the iMac), and for Print Using, choose Generic PostScript Printer. Add this printer (optionally set it as your default), and try Page Setup...what happens? I have a horrible feeling that the advice is going to be a clean install of the system. I strongly doubt it's necessary. The problem is that if you're not near anyone who can physical attend to your machine, reinstall is simply the catch-all. However, as you suspect, if the problem is corrupt preferences in your home directory then a reinstallation might not provide any benefit. For corrupt preference, go to the folder Home Library Preferences and look for files starting with com.epson... and com.apple.print You could move them to the trash, log out, log back in, re-select your printer and see if there is any difference. Also, reboot after setting up the EPSON printer in case the EPSON software is not starting up properly. photobooth query
Hi again, does anyone know where to find the pictures after Photobooth takes/imports them. Where's the folder?? I need to insert them in a word doc. Thanks Mike
No working USB Ports on my ibook
G'day folks, I have a G4 ibook that has all of a sudden lost both USB ports. Everything was working fine and then all of sudden both of them are dead as a doornail... I suspect the better half has been a little heavy handed when disconnecting the USB keyboard however... the local Mac place quoted me $1200 for a new motherboard.. So now I face the dilemma of buying a new imac/book for a few hundred dollars more and then keeping the ibook as a non-usb 'puter.. Anyone else found a different fault that may not require a new motherboard? Thanks in advance Andrew :o)

Anyone else found a different fault that may not require a new motherboard? HI Andrew! Try booting off a CD and see if your ports show up. If not, its pretty much all bads news from here. And a tip for new laptop buyers - get AppleCare within the first year of purchase! I know people that have broken laptops don't want to hear that tired old record, but in this case the Applecare would have paid for itself 3 times over. In saying that Andrew, it might be cheaper for you to trade in the iBook and buy a new one. If you can get $500-odd dollars as a trade in, a new one will only cost you a grand (the lower spec one). Cheaper than a new board. If it is a 14 iBook, then it would be cheaper to repair. Seeya Rod!

It comes in three form, lite, sponsored and the fully purchased. Hardware VPN's
Hi all, I am currently looking for an inexpensive hardware based (remote access) VPN. I am currently comparing a SonicWALL TZ150 and a NetGear FVS124G. The NetGear is obviously cheaper (by about half) but I am wondering if that comes at a significant cost in other areas. Does anyone here have any recommendations? - Matt
old powerbooks to give away - conditions apply
someone has written off and disposed of a number of old G3 powerboox (about 5) it may be that, allegedly, someone else has dumpster dived to retrieve them. they are USB+SCSI (though there may be one old ADB+SCSI and one USB+dual FireWire one though this one is known to be dead) in various states of repair/disrepair some do work others no guarantee, no accessories, no install disks, no OS installed on the hard disks most do not have external power supplies. SO if someone on the WAMUG list has (for legal reasons relating to disposal guidelines) a valid charitable, non personal, non commercial use for these they may contact me off list to arrange collection from the person holding these computers. I do recall seeing an article in on old Macworld which discussed converting moribund laptops into a living picture frame. Unfortunately, that doesn't fit the parameters. Re: Hardware VPN's
I could be wrong but I don't think the Netgear works with Mac. It has a dedicated client for windows. I set a couple up as an end to end VPN where they bind with each other which works well. I had a quick go at getting a Mac to work with it in client/server mode with no luck, had a look on their site and found that you are supposed to install a client program to talk to it (Windows only I think). Perhaps they have a Mac one now. This could be all wrong but that was my impression, pleased to hear otherwhise!
