Mail behaving strangely

2010-03-30 Thread Pat

Starting yesterday, Mail is refusing to delete e-mails that I try to discard as
I read through my many e-mails from several different lists. The message that
appears says: The message (Sender name, subject line) could not be moved to
the mailbox Trash - On My Mac The operation couldn't be completed. File
exists

And then there is a questionmark button and and OK button. (The questionmark
button doesn't seem to do anything useful.)

I can delete an e-mail by clicking Option-delete, but it is clumsy.

It is an intermittent problem - a few e-mails will delete as they should, then
the message turns up again.

Something that seems very weird is that when I look at the e-mails in the Trash
on my Mac, some of them seem to have been scrambled - that is, the Sender and
the Subject line in the Mail application window are different than what appears
in the e-mail itself. Names and subjects from one source get mixed with names
and subjects from another e-mail list.

I'm using OS 10.6.2; I ran repair permissions which didn't improve this
problem. Also deleted everything that was in Trash on my Mac, several times.

I'm wondering if I should try to get this problem sorted out before doing a
backup and installing the 10.6.3 update, or if the update might fix it.

Is there anything I could do?

Pat

Re: Mail behaving strangely

2010-03-30 Thread Pat

Just noticed a further bit of weirdness with the scrambled e-mails: the dates
on them once they are in Trash on my Mac are more than a year out of date, and
the topics are also in the distant past. I have always made a point of
emptying Trash on my Mac periodically, when it built up to several thousand.
Are those long-gone e-mails still hanging around somewhere in the bowels of my
Mac? Ugh.

I hope someone has some idea about a fix.

Hi Pat,

In Mail Preferences Accounts 'Move deleted messages to the Trash mailbox' -
'Permanently erase deleted messages when':
what do you have in Permanently erase deleted messages when … ?

Firstly, try this:
Select the mailbox.
Select rebuild from the Mailbox menu.

Does that help?

Certainly don't even think about upgrading to OS X 10.6.3 UNTIL you have this
issue sorted.
As I have said numerous times on WAMUG List Do Not Upgrade if anything is
amiss with your system.

As is the case with all updates, if there's anything at all amiss with your
system before the update, the update is likely to expose them.

Cheers,
Ronni

2010-03-30 Thread Pat

Hi, Ronni,

I have the setting for Permanently erase deleted messages as 'never', because I
do sometimes have to go back to something there. I rely on the procedure of
flushing some of the oldest every month. Is this likely to be the problem?
Tomorrow, I will try setting it to 'one month' and see if it helps.

When you say
Select the mailbox. Select rebuild from the Mailbox menu.

you are referring to selecting the mailbox on the Mail preferences panel? The
Rebuild option is greyed out. I have 2 other accounts, and they are both
greyed out too.

Thanks,
Pat

One month would be better. You don't want to clog up mail.

No, Rebuild Mailbox:

Highlight (click once) each of the Mailboxes Choose MailboxRebuild

Rebuild recreates the index to the messages and does not cause them to
be lost.
During Rebuild all messages will briefly disappear from the list of
messages, but they will reappear.

Thanks,

I Photo Query

2010-03-30 Thread Graeme Winters

Can someone provide me with an answer to a problem I have encountered when
enlarging photos on the screen in both Events and Photos

I down loaded a series of photos a week ago from 2 cameras and subsequently
thinned these out by hiding or deleting selected photos

I wanted to view some of these photos tonight and found that several of the
photos selected enlarge to the full screen size for a moment then this was
replaced by a large black exclamation mark within a circle. This symbol filled
the screen
Does not look good

This same result occurred with several other selected events but not all frames
selected for enlargement resulted in the exclamation mark
I am using an IMAC 27 V 10.6.3

Hi Graeme

Short answer is basically, the ! mark means that the photos are either
deleted or missing from where they should be. When you see them little,
you're still looking at the thumbnail of it, but the actual or original file
(from when you double click it) isn't actually there (or not where it should
be).

You can try correcting it by rebuilding the iPhoto database.
As you launch iPhoto hold down the Command and Option(Alt) keys.
You will then be presented with a window asking you to rebuild the Database.
This link should help you decide which rebuild is best to use (or which to
start with before doing the others):-
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2638

Also, more info can be found about trying to fix it from here:-
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1952529

As we always mention (which I know you're doing as have seen your Time
Machine backup)...always make sure to backup anything before you start. ;o)

Hope that helps.

Kind Regards
Daniel

Where I am, the fastest download I can receive is my Westnet Bundled

Which is only Broadband1 (ADSL1). I did test Westnet's ADSL2+ for a
month, but I wasn't downloading much faster, I was getting faster
upload speeds, but the slight improvement didn't justify the extra
cost of the upgrade.

I am approx. 4.2 kms from the Exchange my connection comes through,
if I was within 2kms I would be able to get faster speeds.
Broadband2+ (Reach) is available in my area now, so I might give it

We are never happy with our download speeds, we always wanting faster.

System Preferences corrupted

2010-03-30 Thread Kaye and Geoff

Hi

I normally connect to the internet through an ethernet connection to
my partner's machine, but I've just been testing a wireless broadband
connection, which seems to have left my System Preferences corrupted.

Now, every time I open System Preferences and select Network I get
a pop-up box that tells me Your network settings have been changed
by another application. When I press OK the box just pops up again
immediately. If I am very quick I can get System Preferences to
respond to me, but the pop-up box keeps re-appearing.

I've tried trashing com.apple.systempreferences.plist from the
preferences with no change. I do have backups but I'm not sure what
needs replacing. Any help will be appreciated.

2010-03-30 Thread Michael Hawkins

I have two questions.

First is to do with an internet connection that drops out after about an
hour.

In my CBD office I have a Linksys Wireless-G modem model WAG54G and a
MacBook Pro OS 10.6.2.

I use a wireless connection between the computer and the modem. The only
wires connected to the modem are the phone line (through a filter) and power
cord.

The menu bar on the computer shows 5 bar connection with the modem, but
after about an hour of use I get an error message saying that Entourage
cannot find the server, and a message on Safari saying that I am not
connected to the internet. Westnet reports that I am connected even when the
computer reports tat there is no internet connection

The computer remains connected for hours on end when I use it at home.

When there is no internet connection lights that are solidly alight on the
modem are labelled Power, Ethernet 2, WLAN. The light labelled DSL blinks.

When there is an internet connection, the light labelled Ethernet 2 is not
alight, and the lights labelled WLAN, DSL and Internet are alight solidly.

Each time connection fails I unplug the modem, let it sit for a while, and
then reconnect.

Am I right in thinking that there is a fault in the modem?

(I have not pressed the reset button. Not because I'm lazy, but because I
can't find the manual and cannot remember the numbers to enter into the url
address bar in the browser.)

Now for my second question.

I am fortunate in that as well as being able to connect to Westnet via a
phone point in my office which is a direct phone line, I can connect to a
different network via an ethernet (totally separate from my personal isp
connection and using different access port in the skirting board).

At the moment I run an ethernet cable from the port in the skirting board to
the ethernet port in my computer.

Could I instead run that cable to the Linksys modem (which has 4 ethernet
ports), and then use a wireless connection between the computer and the
modem?

Regards,

Michael Hawkins.
