Handbrake wants to convert the entire VOB or DVD into an MPEG or whatever format you need - this might be what you want.I use QuickTime (or even iMovie) to then edit down to the part I want. Usually when I'm using DVDxDV it is because I want a 5 minute clip from a DVD. This is the only reason why you need QuickTime Pro.

Things appears to e very good software but is not networkable and

What makes you say that? A quick Google on things osx dropbox comes up
with about 2 million results!

http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8oe=UTF-8sourceid=navclientgfns=1q=
things+osx+dropbox

Several of them appear to be discussing ways to sync the Things database via
dropbox eg this one (which was the first result on my search):

http://www.tuaw.com/2009/10/10/tips-and-tricks-putting-things-in-your-dropb
ox-makes-syncing-si/

A quick peruse suggests that it is easy to sync the database between
computers but that you need to ensure that only one computer at a time is
accessing the database, to quote the article:

There are some caveats to this sync method. First, you should never run
Things on all of the machines at the same time. Instead, always quit Things
when leaving a machine to ensure that the database is properly closed.
Second, syncing Things with iCal from numerous Macs can cause some problems
resulting in duplicate iCal to-dos. Finally, realize that you'll still have
to sync up your iPhone to one of your Macs in order to keep it up to date.

While this may seem like a roundabout way of keeping Things synced on more
than one Mac, it's actually quite straightforward and works very well. Until
Cultured Code builds global syncing into future versions of Things, this is a
 good workaround.

I'll leave it up to you to check out any of the other results :o)

Cheers

Hi Stuart,

You can change the font, using the menu bar Format / Show Fonts or in the

Hope that will work for you.

Handsfree iPhone car kit? Tom Tom good anyone?

2010-07-02 Thread Martin Hill

Hi all,
So what sorts of Car kits is everyone using with your iPhones in your cars
these days?

We need:

- hands-free phone calling
- car audio play-thru (FM transmission as we don't have a direct audio input
to the car stereo unfortuntely)
- dashboard/windshield mount (rotatable for GPS apps)
- in-car charging

We've tried the Belkin TuneBase FM with Handsfree for iPhone and found the FM
transmitter not that fantastic in our particular car, though it performed well
in my sisters car, and our car cig lighter socket was a bit too low for the
stalk to bring the iPhone up to a height that would make it useable for GPS
software usage.

We have a BlueAnt, Supertooth II bluetooth handsfree in our other car, which
works well enough for hands-free calling, but it doesn't do anything else.

I'm leaning towards the Tom Tom Car Kit for iPhone which ticks off on most
items though doesn't do FM radio transmission so we'd need to work out some
other option there. it's a leased car, so that makes it more difficult.

Can anyone recommend a cheap source of the Tom Tom unit?

-Mart

Firefox printing problem - no A5

2010-07-02 Thread Kaye and Geoff

Hi,

I'm printing from Firefox onto A5 stationery
eMac OS 10.4.11
Firefox 3.0.6
Epson Stylus Photo R290

To keep my printouts to a minimum I'm previewing the pages, editing
to compress the file, then printing double-sided. All worked fine for
about six files, but suddenly preview only showed two pages when
Firefox displayed about six pages worth of text. I trashed prefs for
firefox and preview, reloaded the file, exited and restarted firefox
and preview, rebooted - nothing changed. If I tried to print a third
page it printed blank.

I went back and tested one of the files that had previously printed
correctly (10 pages). It now only allowed me to print one page. The
number of pages I can print from the files seems to be arbitrary -
some files showed all data, some only the first 1, 2...n pages. To
complicate matters, one file I tested appeared to show all pages on
preview, but after I printed them I found it had actually printed the
first three pages, then the last page, and omitted two pages in the
middle!

As part of determining what was wrong I used page setup to switch
back to A4 and did a print preview - all pages appeared correctly.
When I went to switch back to A5 it had completely disappeared from
the choices of stationery size.

I now have no preset A5 stationery size (from any application). To
get around this I've defined a custom A5 page size, but this gives
exactly the same problems with missing pages in preview and printing
from Firfox. The problem doesn't occur if I print from Word,
NeoOffice, etc or if I use another browser.

I can work around the problem but would prefer it didn't happen, and
I'd definitely like my preset A5 stationery back.

Any suggestions on how to get things back to normal would be appreciated.

Cheers, Kaye

Re: Handsfree iPhone car kit? Tom Tom good anyone ?

2010-07-02 Thread Eugene

Hi Mart,

two years ago I bought one of these:

http://cgi.ebay.com/CAR-CRADLE-FM-TRANSMITTER-REMOTE-HANDSFREE-IPHONE-/180527174389?cmd=ViewItempt=AU_MobilePhoneAccessorieshash=item2a084212f5

or at at least similar. In those days it cost twice as much and didn't have the
remote control.

It has proved itself ultra reliable except after 2 years being near the dash
and in the sun the LED display no longer works. This is not a problem as it
only displayed the FM channel you have selected and I now know by heart what
frequency it is tuned in to.

I have dragged this with me interstate and used it in various hired and
borrowed cars without any problems. In most cars the stalk is long enough to
allow it to be comfortably viewed when used as a GPS. This does depend on the
car and where the cigarette plug is located. A bit of velcroe might benefit
some cars.

This unit will do everything you require plus it has USB port for charging
other phones/devices and a headphone type socket for connecting other MP3
devices.

At $20 it is a cheap unit that does the job well.

 Regards,
 Eugene

We have a BlueAnt, Supertooth II bluetooth handsfree in our other car, which
works well enough for hands-free calling, but it doesn't do anything else.

I'm leaning towards the Tom Tom Car Kit for iPhone which ticks off on most
items though doesn't do FM radio transmission so we'd need to work out some
other option there. it's a leased car, so that makes it more difficult.

Can anyone recommend a cheap source of the Tom Tom unit?

Re: Handsfree iPhone car kit? Tom Tom good anyone ?

2010-07-02 Thread Christopher S

Hey Martin,

I'm using a TomTom Car Kit custom mounted with audio connected to the back
of my head unit and power from behind the dash.

It works really well but the base is an issue - I had to disassemble it to
remove the suction cap so it's not very solid - I need to work on that - but
looks better than a windshield mount.

The TomTom unit has that interesting suction mount attached to its base - no
gooseneck - and this could be an issue for some windscreens. It may not be
as flexible as the Magellan RoadMate.

Audio is great - direct connection is the way to go though, I've never found
the quality of FM tuning to be all that good. Are you sure there is no way
you can get RCA in? The built in GPS does make a difference. Charging the
phone takes awhile especially when using TomTom software.

Also of note the iPhone connects to the TomTom unit via Bluetooth for the
speakerphone, controls on the Car Kit and I think the GPS as well - so this
is interesting as my head unit also connects via Bluetooth.

I purchased mine from the UK last year and it was only slightly cheaper than
the Apple Store.

Regards,

Chris.

Hi Martin,

Just a heads up … if you are planning to get the new iPhone 4, it will not fit
the in current Tom Tom unit.

Re: Handsfree iPhone car kit? Tom Tom good anyone ?

2010-07-02 Thread Martin Hill

Hi Peder,
Indeed - since my email earlier today, I realised the Tom Tom would not fit the
iPhone 4 and have now started looking at the Magellan Car kit instead.

It has pretty much all the same features as the Tom Tom (including a GPS chip),
but with an adjustable cradle and extended dock connector so it can fit iPhones
in cases and it sounds like it will fit the iPhone 4 as well.

http://store.apple.com/us/reviews/H0884ZM/A?mco=MTcxOTI4Mzk

It also still doesn't have an FM transmitter and as Chris S mentioned, I have
also aways found the quality lacking, but I don't know if we have much choice
not being able to modify the car stereo.

Thanks also to Eugene for your suggestion. Looks like a nice very cheap option
and crams an amazing number of features into the unit. Just a couple of
questions - does it allow you to rotate the iPhone to landscape viewing? Also,
the specs don't mention an extra microphone for hands-free calling - does it
use the mic on the phone? What is the quality like on phone calls?

-Mart
