Re: cannot view emails
Hi Susan Thanks for your reply. Yes i agree, my query was a little vague. And it now seems it's a bigger issue than just ticking a few boxes. I eventually got onto Telstra and they couldn't fix my problem for free so now I'm paying a tech ($120) who was very helpful but also couldn't fix the problem - of course I only pay when they can fix it. They are going to get back to me. And yes I do use Mail. I spent 3 hours on the phone with both the Telstra advisor & the technician today. There is a problem with my home phone interfering with my internet connection. I live in Trigg & I believe my internet is on a paired line. I have constant internet dropouts & have had this for 10 years. I may just find that spending $120 will be a good investment! If they can fix my dropouts PLUS get my personal emails to come through, then I'll be happy. I haven't been receiving any WAMUG emails since end of October but after their intervention today, I now have nearly 2 months worth to look at. Happy bed time reading!! Thanks again & in case anyone is vaguely interested I can update you with a result. Hi All im currently waiting on the phone - 15 min wait to speak to a Telstra operator but in the mean time I might try to get an answer to my query from WAMUG. I have a Bigpond email account and for some obscure reason my emails are not being sent to my home computer, only to my iPhone & iPad. This happened on 8th Dec. Could someone please direct me to find where I can tick the right box on my home computer (iMac 27" IOS 10.7.5) to say I want my Bigpond emails to come through to me. Thanks VM. Account name for group- make a payment
Hello Ronni Yes you are right there is a small JOIN button in the top right hand corner of the web page, although I feel it slightly confusing, in that I 'JOINED' many years ago. Having a 'RENEW SUBSCRIPTION' button would be more obvious. And YES I have tried to pay my subscription by going to JOIN (as you say) but the ANZ bank will not allow me to use the words 'Western Australian Macintosh Users Group' as an account name. It's too long for their system. I now see from the other posts (thanks everyone) that it's OK to write 'WAMUG'. I was under the belief that the banks were too pedantic about using an acronym. Fortunately Maureen has now sent me an easier way to pay. BTW, even if I was a rocket scientist, I can't presume that the ANZ bank will allow an abbreviation of account names!! Thanks again for assistance everyone. Denise Williams On 08/03/2015, at 12:24 PM, Ronda Brown wrote: Couldn't agree more with everything you have mentioned Daniel. Life is very busy for me ATM and other things have come up. I would really liked to have come shown my support for all you wonderful people. But can I suggest that if you need an extra vote on anything, then I'm happy to vote over the phone!!My number is 0417184592. I also received a message from someone else at WAMUG that my $30 subscription didn't go through, 2 weeks ago. It is not showing up on my banking so that will be correct - I have been unable to pay. I just tried again but the bank won't allow me to use the Acct name as it's too long. And unfortunately I deleted a heap of emails this morning, one of which I think, was explaining how to pay more easily. I have always found it difficult to make WAMUG payments!! Financial membership of WAMUG allows members to post queries to the list and to receive advice and information. Your $30 subscription runs for the calendar year from 1 January to 31 December. We are now in the third month of this year and it is time to review the membership list to ensure that paid-up members have the privileges they are entitled to. If you have already paid your membership you have nothing to worry about. Everything is 'hunky-dory.’ If you are reading this, or you know of somebody who wishes to avail themselves of expert advice and list camaraderie, please ensure that the $30 membership is finalised by Thursday, 5 March. Extra details are our website. Again, thanks to all those who have already supported a wonderful organisation. 2 AGM Many of you will be aware that over the last few years we have struggled to get a quorum at out AGM. According to our constitution we require 20% of our membership or 15 members ( whichever is less) to be present at the AGM if it is to be viable. The actual AGM only takes about 10 minutes and includes a summary from the committee, the election of office bearers and the Treasurer’s report. This year we are trying something new in the hope that it will allow more members to attend. Our AGM will be held at the Dome Cafe, 897 Albany Highway East Victoria Park at 12:30 PM on Sunday 8th March. After the AGM part, we invite you will stay, order some lunch, chat socialise. This is another chance to match faces to list names. Family members and significant others are welcome to attend but only paid up members can vote at the AGM. So give yourself a break from the Sunday roast and come, socialise and vote. In order to provide Dome with the number of attendees, please email me off list if you intend to come and if appropriate how many will be accompanying you. It would be appreciated if this information can be given by 6 PM on Thursday, 5 March. 3 COMMITTEE MEMBERSHIP A few weeks back we called for nominations for committee membership. Again, I ask if any person would be willing to join the committee and assist in furthering the aims of WAMUG. It would be great to have some ‘new blood.’ The current committee of Peter Hinchlife, Peter Botman, Peter Smith, Daniel Kerr, Bernard Barnwell and yours truly, have all nominated for 2015. However, another one or two members would help share the load and we would feel less guilty when we have to miss meetings or need time off. If you would like to give something back to WAMUG being on the committee could be for you. it is not an onerous responsibility and as the old adage goes “Many hands make light work.” If you have any queries about this feel free to email me off list. Once again, thank you for all your interest and support. WAMUG only exists because you the members contribute and so willingly share your interests and knowledge. Hope to see many of you at the AGM. Re: Wanting to buy an iPad
Hi Susan Thanks very much for your suggestions/comments. I went to the Perth Apple store asked the guy heaps of questions decided, at this stage, I only really needed a basic model so have bought a 16gb iPad mini for $349. One of the reasons why I decided I didn't need to get a 32gb iPad was that with Daniel Kerr now selling La Cie hard drives that have wifi, I won't need to store much on the iPad. I will be sure to have movies stored on the wifi hard drive that I am buying from Daniel. BTW, the guys at the Apple store knew nothing about there being a wifi portable hard drive available. He was MOST INTERESTED did a search on the the internet for the item. He said he'll have to tell everyone else in the Apple store! So THANKS to Daniel for giving us this info'. This is because, for the past 2 years I've been too afraid to update my software on the phone as the last time I did this I lost all my contacts on the phone (we're talking pre-iCloud days, for me). While in Hawaii I went to the Mac store so as to put some photos on Facebook. I was using one of their iPads and it wanted to update my phone's software I think it might have done this automatically. I then tried to do the Facebook thing, trying to attach a couple of photos but this was going to take HOURS! After 45mins I needed to disconnect everything. (I did after all, have far better things to do with my time at Waikiki Beach!). This then created a problem when I tried to download all my photos onto my iMac at home. I kept getting error messages when trying to download save the photos into a folder. I have now updated iTunes on my iMac to 11.0.4 and my iPhone to 6.1.4. Re: iPhone4s is in Recovery Mode
Hi Ronni Thanks for info regarding Drop Box. I will look into it, although I'd have to say, my recent problem with losing my Hawaii photos was not because I wasn't being diligent about backups (I always download my important photos onto my computer, when i'm home), but rather due to my misunderstanding of the importance of having the latest software updated onto my phone. My phone went into meltdown when I went to the Apple store in Honolulu to download a few photos, due to my not having downloaded the latest software (my reason for not doing this was that I had once done it lost all my contacts). I was unwilling to download my photos (to Facebook) while we were cruising on the ship (at $1 a minute and VERY SLOW, I decided not to use the ship's internet service.)And because it had been a few years since I'd travelled overseas, I didn't realize I had to request 'ROAMING' on my iPhone from my phone service provider before leaving Aust. I had gone to the Vodaphone store to ask them about turning off auto downloads the guy was very helpful BUT he didn't mention that I need to request roaming! Consequently I had no internet or phone service on my phone. I did try and rectify this by using my husband's phone internet access but then I struck a problem when Vodaphone requested my password and I didn't have that with me (it is written down, in a secret spot at home!). It was one mini disaster after another. I probably should have done a Google search for 'How to prepare your phone/camera for travelling overseas'. To download things off my phone, I'm not sure whether to use Drop Box or iCloud? I have paid the $40 to get heaps of gigs with iCloud. Just need to now work out how to do it. It's all TIME TIME TIME. I don't enjoy the unrelenting frequency that technology keeps changing/updating. We all have busy, demanding lives that don't always involve easy access to technology so keeping our overloaded brains interested in it all is a big ask. Having said that, I am so grateful for WAMUG and all the wonderful contributors. So thanks again for your help. Thereafter, for every 500 MB of photo and videos you upload, Dropbox adds another 500 MB to your quota, up to a total of 3 GB. Even if you later delete all that media from your Camera Uploads folder, the extra storage space is yours to keep permanently. If you are interested and require details and how to use Camera Upload on a Mobile Device post back and I can give instructions under another Subject heading to WAMUG. Or you can email me direct at my support email address: supp...@ronnibrown.net - but be aware my email support charge is $30 per 20mins work. Re: iPhone4s is in Recovery Mode
Hi Ronni Thanks for your reply - I can't believe that i may still have a chance of recovering my photos. Having shown the phone to the Mac store also to a mobile phone repairer (who said he used a Windows computer to try retrieve things), I thought there is no hope left. No one has pressed the RESTORE option (at my instruction) so I will now find a Windows machine try what you have said. I'll keep you posted. I'm going to be VERY happy if I can retrieve things. And YES, it's been a hard-earned lesson, knowing I must do regular updates. I was actually doing downloads of my photos (not backups) but was using old software as I had previously had a bad experience when updating. If you have a windows computer once you plug the phone into the computer you should get a prompt message that asks you if you want to import photos and videos. Doing it that way you should be able to save photos and videos. As this way it has nothing to do with iTunes. Recovery mode does not mean that the phone is wiped, it has just locked you out. Restoring the phone is what wipes it. If the prompt message does not come up, go to the start menu and click on computer, the device will show up along with the hard drive of the computer. Right Click on the device and you will have the option to import pictures and videos. This only works with Windows computer though. Wireless/Airport network on iMac faulty?
Hi All Firstly, thanks to Jane Rhonda for their advice RE unlocking my iphone for USA - all is on track there (after spending over 2 hours waiting on a call to 3 - no info' about unlocking an iphone is on their web page). Anyway I STILL have a big problem with my wireless network on my iMac (thanks Bob Howells for your email). I have had to buy a new modem (broke aerial on last one). Tried a new Dlink a new Netgear, both the latest. No luck with them. Have been using my neighbour's modem with an ethernet cable and all goes well. Problems start as soon as I want to go wireless. Current situation: Received new BOB wireless modem from iinet this morning. Went through ALL the instructions with very helpful guy at iinet. Once again, all works well with ethernet cable. We then unplugged that and after trying for an hour, using every config avail, to get the wireless in my iMac to automatically connect, we then had to go MANUAL connect, using all the numbers he provided to me. Hey VOILA I have Safari and Entourage working and all looks good. EXCEPT when I want to go further than the first 2 pages of a web site. I can view my accounts on say ANZ, but when I want to transfer money between accounts, nothing happens when I press 'CONFIRM'. The page isn't frozen, but I can't go forward. I also can't send emails but I can receive them. (I'll have to plug my mac into neighbour's modem to send this email). IiNet seem to think it's a problem with my Mac's wireless setup. I have an iMac using OS 10.5.8 and Safari 5.0.3. What could be wrong with my wireless network? When I go to the little signal icon, top right of screen, and look at airport, it says it is ON. When I go to Network Preferences it says AIRPORT ON. So I'm able to open web pages but can't keep going further with them. I'm tearing my hair out. Have spent at least 20hours trying to fix all this. I know my system has a lot of fonts all over the place (unfortunately I don't use a font management programme and I know I should). Could this be causing a problem? I will happily get someone to come and fix things but I fly to USA on Wed so that will have to wait. But I'd like to have things running properly while I'm away. ANY advice welcomed - thanks all - you're a great bunch of 'nerds'!!! Where would I be without you. Programme to download info from iphone?
Hi All I'm heading to USA next week and want to unlock my iphone 3 so that I can put in a USA sim card. But I need to firstly download all my contacts, apps etc (have already done the music) onto my Mac. Then when phone is unlocked, I'll put it all back on. Did a Google searcgh and one suggestion is to buy an app called PhoneView. I've just tried the demo version and it seems to work OK but obviously the demo version is limited. It's only about $20 to buy - is this necessary or are there other apps that are free? Flaky Modem -D Link DSL2730B
Hi All Imac Mac OS 10.5.8 Safari: v5.0.3 Email: Entourage 2004 About 6 weeks ago I needed to buy a new WiFi Modem/Router so purchased the D Link 2730B from Dick Smith. Have had nothing but problems - many hours on phone with iinet (VERY helpful) and finally with D Link. We put in patches, I updated Safari, deleted cookies but still my internet connection is flaky. Right now I can access Safari but cannot send an email. I believe it's something to do with security. There are times when I can access my bank account stuff but when I try to transfer funds, nothing happens. Has anyone got any comments on the D Link modems? My previous modem was a Netgear one which worked beautifully but the aerial broke off. I'm about to take this new modem back to Dick Smith but would firstly like to know of other's experience. Re: improving jpg resolution
Hi Chris Have you tried the Filters in Photoshop? When you have the drop down menu of filters go to Sharpen and then depending on your version of Photoshop you'll have a few choices of the type of sharpening available. Best to use Unsharp Mask. Remember to keep the radius to no more than 2.5 and the threshold to 0. Hope this helps Denise Williams Aperture and Graphic Converter have image sharpeners. Of course, there are strict limits which depend upon the sharpness of the original image. Re: Financial Advice from the Storm warning about buying a car
Hi All Thanks for forwarding this about SYNERGY rebate. We were out for more than 12 hours so I tried to submit my claim but at the end of putting in all my details, the email that should have gone through, via their web page, failed. I also needed a username and password. Might try again later - $80 is $80, after all! And on another issue. If anyone is thinking of grabbing a bargain at the car yards BEWARE of not being able to get insurance coverage. Our insurer won¹t even give THIRD PARTY insurance to a car that has ANY damage. Not happy. So our son is driving around without ANY insurance (we thought he had 3rd party but on investigation, find he hasn¹t). His car resembles a golf ball¹s surface, having been parked at UWA. Photo Slideshow PLUS movie footage
Hi All, esp Ronni Marlene MY Specs - iMac Intel Core Duo, 2 gig ram, 51 gig avail space on hard drive, OS 10.5.8. I have iLife 06 (hopefully I won't need to upgrade to 09 as I'm not after face recognition and lots of bells whistles) I have been reading with great interest, all the postings on creating slideshows and now that I have finally started to produce the real thing, I am trying to get my head around all the postings. But I also want my production to be a Slideshow COMBINED WITH Movie clips. (Marlene has shown me one her husband created so I know it can be done). To date I have scanned several hundred baby/childhood photos (from negs) and they are all sitting in a folder on my desktop, as JPGs, Adobe RGB colour space, and open up to a 3meg file. They are all named Ryan Baby 01, Ryan Baby 02 etc. But my immediate query is to do with transferring the VHS movie footage onto my desktop. I have about 40 hours worth of movies on VHS tapes (obviously I will only want to use about 10 mins worth in my final production). I have bought a little apparatus from JB Hi Fi called Video to DVD maker by kaiserbaas. The software is called Empia Capture. I also had to upgrade Graphic Converter to v 6. I have successfully transferred one VHS video into a folder on my desktop but before I do ALL the others, I would love to know what settings I should be using. I have read your posting Ronni, from March 1st and understand that the settings you refer to are for exporting a project from iPhoto to iDVD. Ronni's posting 1/3/10: In Create A Visually Impressive Saved Slideshow In iPhoto¹09 I explain how to create a saved slideshow and how to setup the slideshow settings, configure slideshow settings, configure the Ken Burns effect, and export your Slideshow. I explain my preferred Export settings for achieving the Highest Quality DVD of your Slideshow, which is using Compression Type: Apple Intermediate Codec. You might find other export settings work better for you. Below are the experiments I carried out. My findings were: Both resulted in smooth video Audio playback high quality DVD, but I felt the AIC was slightly better quality than DV-PAL. Possibly because the dimensions were AIC 1064 x 800 pixels versus the DV-PAL size of 768 x 576 pixels. I have Compression options with Empia and so far have just gone None. Should I use Apple Intermed Codec? I am also asked for a preset and choices of HDV 720p, HDV 1080i or Other. I have used Other I have kept the frames per second at Best. And finally, do I really need to use iPhoto? Can I just create the whole slideshow/movie combination in iMovie or iDVD? I'd prefer not to use iPhoto, unless perhaps the newer version is more intelligent than v6. Also, Ronni I only recently tried to open your PDF with the password you sent me (THANKS VM) but I had no luck. And how do I make a financial contribution to you for all your wonderful help? Thanks again - I'll be off to the library this afternoon to see if there is a book on iLife 06. (Marlene, I haven't managed to buy anything from the States yet but will do). Suggested topic for Next meeting
Hi All Thanks Peter for your request for topics for the next meeting. I have been following with considerable, but confused interest, the postings to help Laura with a slideshow. I would love to be able to do simple slideshows but because I don't use iPhoto (all my photos are edited and stored using Bridge Photoshop), I would love a bit of assistance/demo in knowing how to get a slideshow together that can be viewed on someone's TV. Fortunately I do know how to set up the music track in Garageband, shortening the tracks where necessary. If there is someone willing to demo this at the next meeting, could they please let us know beforehand which programmes and versions of same, they would be using so that I can make myself familiar with them before the meeting. I would also print out all of Ronni's postings regarding slideshows and bring them to the meeting, as there are heaps of bits I don't understand!! But of course I would be mindful to not use too much time with questions from them. Much appreciated Denise Williams-Photographer PH 9447 3468 MOB 0417 184592 The WAMUG Committee had its first meeting for the year last night - and suffered the User Group Committee's version of Writer's Block! We really struggled to come up with something interesting or challenging in the way of topics for February's General Meeting. The few ideas we did come up with were generally considered too weak to be of interes, with the obvious exception of a discussion about the outcome of Apple's January 27th event: and of course, we have no idea what that might be. So we decided to throw it open for discussion to you, the members. All we need is a short list of topics that you are interested in. This will be shortened to three four for the night, depending on the complexity of the topics suggested. We'll need to set a deadline for this, so we'll say next 9:00 pm next Tuesday (26th January). This will give us time to allow Pete Smith to prepare his regular meeting announcement, and give those of who are able to present the material time to research and prepare. BTW - this offer is always open for any meeting. Some topics come up from time to time which simply present themselves, but suggestions from the WAMUG Body are always welcome. -- Peter HinchliffeApwin Computer Services FileMaker Pro Solutions Developer Perth, Western Australia Phone (618) 9332 6482Mob 0403 064 948 Mac because I prefer it -- Windows because I have to. -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au

I'm going to suggest to the people who asked me about iPhoto duplicates, to use the archives on the WAMUG site (as everyone has kindly suggested) but I decided to try that way for myself first, just to see how it actually works (sorry WAMUGERS, but by just saying 'refer to WAMUG archives' doesn't necessarily help people). Ie I tried doing just that and had no success on the Home Page when I typed in 'iPhoto duplicates' in the Search Box, under the Archives area. Even just typing 'iphoto' came up with zilch. So from the home page I went to 'Join' and then got onto 'Mailing List' and under 'Archive' it says 'The complete mailing list archive is available here' and voila, the next page that comes up is headed 'messages by thread' and yes, it is possible to then type 'iPhoto duplicates' in the search box. That was great. Bit of a convoluted way of getting to what I want. So I won't tell people to just go to 'archives'- it doesn't work. I will direct them to MESSAGES BY THREAD. Unless of course anyone can tell me what I'm doing wrong. Alternatively, I will do as suggested, and cut paste the relevant information so that no email addresses are forwarded (thanks for that suggestion, I hadn't thought of the consequences of forwarding). My question now is, do I have permission to forward some recent emails addressing so many problems with iPhoto to 4 people who gave me their email addresses? I found the emails that Ronni sent, to Peta, about iPhoto's libraries, very helpful. These people also intended to look up WAMUG on the web, and said they would be interested in joining. Putting an iTunes song on my iPhone
Hi all I'm a newbie to the iPhone and I know I'm supposed to be able to download songs from iTunes onto my phone, using Bluetooth. I've selected the Bluetooth icon on the very top of my iMac screen. It says Bluetooth is on but then another window comes up saying Denise Williams's iMac is the name Bluetooth devices use to connect to this computer. Then the 2 boxes underneath that are both ticked ie On is ticked and so is Discoverable. But then under that is a small picture of an iPhone and it says 'Denise Williams's iPhone not connected - it shows a small red dot. On the right side of this window it says Type Handsfree Services Handsfree Gateway Paired No Connected No I've checked the iPhone settings - General - Bluetooth and it shows as ON. It also shows a spinning wheel under Devices and constantly searches for something? Under that it says 'Now Discoverable' I have the iPhone sitting next to the computer. I am on an iMac with 10.5.8 All this effort has used so much of my valuable time, just so that I can put a song or two on my iPhone!! Technology is for the nerds! So are there any 'nerds' able to help me - I say that with the greatest respect! PROBLEM SOLVED Sorting Photos by Orientation
Hi Ronni and WAmuggers I decided to have another look around the options in Bridge - and VOILA, yes I found the Filter - Orientation down on the left side of my window. Thank You! I had been using the drop down menus along the top and there were no words 'Filter' or 'Orientation' up there. I would have thought those word options should have been available in Sort When doing a word search in Help, and typing the word 'Filter', I got something called Filter Panel and didn't realize that would be where to go. Re: How to get out of Leopard installation process
Hi Robert et al Thanks vm for your help. Boy have I had a huge learning exp tonight! Basically my problems all started after going to Digilife today, in Osb Pak. I bought iWorks 09 and asked whether my OS (X4.4.) was suitable to run it. No it isn't so I told the guy I had a Cd of Leopard that I was too afraid to install as I'd been told I should do a backup first. Having never done that I decided to wait until I could get some help in installing Leopard. But the guy at Digilife assured me it was a cinch to do, just don't format or delete all. Just follow the prompts and all is fine!!! Yeah sure! What he didn't tell me was to be sure I had enough free disk space to install Leopard, which requires about 10gig. I had 2.6gig spare. So evrything seized up - Daniel helped me greatly (after a frantic phone call to him as I didn't even have WAMUG's email address, on my laptop). He managed to get me out of the screen I had and got me to restart, holding Option, which looked promising. But the iMac still wanted to use the Leopard CD to boot from. Several tries but no, it was the same each time. Not wanting to trouble Daniel again (and not a lot of WAMUGGERS around, except for Rob H, but then it is Friday drinks time!) I eventually phoned Applecare, for the first time in 3 yrs. All's well now, I hope, having learnt how to Boot up in Target disk mode etc etc. The laptap is now grinding through 223gig of stuff from the iMac, and has fortunately 'found' the ext hard drive I have, with 1 terabyte. I assume it has found it wirelessly as I could't hook the ext hard drive to the laptop AND have the firewire cable, from the iMac, connected to the laptop as well. My God, this is all too much for this old baby boomer. Thank goodness for WAMUG (esp Daniel) and for Applecare and thumbs down to Digilife, who BTW have never heard of WAMUG. I'm now going to chill out and leave the machines to grind away - for 8 hours. If not failing all else you can power down ... if there's a power button on the imac push and hold it will after time shut down or switch the switch off at the wall . Whichever way you power it down , when you power on push and hold the option key and eventually it hopefully will show you your Leopard disc AND your Tiger instal arrow to the Tiger and enter . Hope this gets you going because if you have to use the Tiger Instal Disc to get going there might be some roadblocks . For later , you might consider making a smallish partition on your external drive to instal anbarebones OSX system on so that you can start up from that to fix the imac or your laptop HTH's Bob -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au
Re: How to get out of Leopard installation process- thoughts, ...
Hi Daniel Thank you for your concern - it's very comforting for those of us who don't quite understand how all the hardware fits together. Yes I agree about backup and I actually have most of my client photos on CDs but not in any easily found order. The thought of losing all the other personal stuff was my main concern, and some of my recent client work. I need to learn how Time Machine works - another day perhaps. Right now I'm so pleased that I have my lovely MacBook pro and that the 2 computers are talking to each other. So far 70gig has transferred. 5 hours to go! I have dragged EVERYTHING from the iMac (including Applications, Library, Users, Developer, System Automount). I'm assuming, once I have successfully installed Leopard on the iMac and my transfer has finished, that I just have to pull all that stuff off the ext hard drive and drop it onto the iMac? Any suggestions - tomorrow, would be gratefully accepted. Thanks again Denise Williams On 3/4/09 8:31 PM, Daniel Kerr wa...@macwizardry.com.au wrote: Hi Denise Just following on from this,..some of this worries me a little, sitting back and thinking about it a bit more. OK, first off. Good that it's copying over to an external drive for a backup. AS always before anything major, or even just for safety sake,..everyone should always have a backup. ALWAYS. As an aside, the number of calls I've had the last 2 weeks for data recovery for drives is a worry. Most from Windows users. And you ask where there is backup and get the blank look. Backup? Without going off topic too much,...I saw it put well the other day. If you think that for each photo or picture you have, it's worth $1 of your time. Only $1. And most people will have say at least 1000 photo's. If you lost all of that and could never get it back. That's a monetary value of $1000. (Of course you can't really put a value on some photos you could never get again if they got lost.). Compare this with the price of one external Hard Drive. As an example, a Western Digital quad interface (FW400,FW800, USB2, eSATA) 1TB drive retails around $299. (yes, I know the other thread was about problems with them,..I'm just using it as an example). Anyway,..you can see my point hopefully. ;o) OK,..sorry. Back to my thinking at hand I'm curious Denise as to the next steps that you've been advised to do. Just wanted to see what's going to happen before you head off and do anything else. (I'm not querying or second guessing Applecare at all,..I'm really just interested to see what they've advised you to do, before doing it, as I'd hate to see anything get worse from here.) I would like to buy an iPhone wondered whether second hand is a good way to go. Had a quick look on eBay and can't work out the difference between an unlocked phone and a legally unlocked phone. And what does 'no turbo sim and no jailbreak' mean?? I am with the 3 network. Background for emails
Hi All I have designed an A4 letterhead for a client and she now wants to use it as a background picture on all her emails. She knows how to insert the JPG I've sent her, into her new emails but it comes up tiled (ie lots of the letterhead). How do we get the A4 letterhead to fit correctly? I've given her a version at 72ppi and one at 120ppi but same problem with both. I've kept the canvas size to A4, just in case someone wanted to print out her emails but perhaps this doesn't need to be the case, as emails are usually pretty short. Audio component of movie to MP3
Hi all, I recently downloaded some podcasts to my itunes, but they're in the movie format. I want to sync them onto my ipod, but it's not as advanced and doesn't have the capability to hold movies. However, it would be fine if they were just stored as audio tracks, as they are just tutorials and the visual movie side isn't completely necessary. Hi All I am about to purchase a 17 MacBook Pro and will be upgrading it's RAM to 4gig but before taking the plunge, and purchasing, I was wondering whether there will be any chance in the near future of a Mac laptop being produced that has the capacity for even more RAM? I run Photoshop CS3 and like lots of RAM! Any ideas appreciated. Denise Williams-Photographer PH 9447 3468 MOB 0417 184592 [EMAIL PROTECTED] 55 Duart Rd TRIGG WA 6029 Hi Michael, I agree with Philippe, definitely max your RAM. Especially With Snow Leopard due for release in early 2009. To accommodate the enormous amounts of memory being added to advanced hardware, Snow Leopard extends the 64-bit technology in Mac OS X to support breakthrough amounts of RAM up to a theoretical 16TB, or 500 times more than what is possible today. More RAM makes applications run faster, because more of their data can be kept in the very fast physical RAM instead of on the much slower hard disk. Re: Batch save Raws to tiffs
Hi Ian THANK you VERY much for your help - it worked a treat. Obviously the trick was to use the selection, 'Image Processor'! Regards Thanks Denise Williams - Photographer Gday Denise, There a couple of ways to achieve a batch conversion in Bridge to change file type without the need to create an Action (which you can do but it is a little more complex) One fairly easy method: Open the folder containing the images in Bridge. I prefer the Default Workspace (Comd + F1) select the desired images, go under the Tools menu to Photoshop to Image Processor which will open a dialogue box that will provide you with a number of options. eg: File type, size, destination folder etc. Tick or fill in the appropriate boxes, click 'Run' and Bridge will do all the work for you and place your new TIFF images in the folder you designate. This method creates new files and leaves your Camera RAW files unaltered. Batch save Raws to tiffs
Hi All This question is more directed to photographers. I have just installed Photoshop CS3 and of course, Bridge. I am familiar with creating actions in PSD, as a Batch Action. I am having trouble creating a batch action that will convert my Camera Raws to tiffs. Bridge doesn't seem to have the capability of creating actions and then when I VIEW a Raw file in PSD (it doesn't actually OPEN in PSD), I am unable to see anything in the drop down menu that normally allows me to create an action. After looking up HELP in Bridge, they just say to go to Tools then Photoshop/Batch (in the drop down menu). That's fine except that I haven't been able to create the action in the first place because I simply can't open a RAW in PSD. I'm sure I'm missing something trivial here! Any help greatly appreciated otherwise I'll have to go back to using the Canon software. I'm not an iPhoto user (can't stand the fact it let's you save duplicate files in the same folder) but I'm forced to use it for a slide show. This comes up when I double click on the small preview photo across the top of screen - it comes up as this blank thing I can't get rid of it. Have to quit iPhoto. All photos are JPGs around 400kb. Q2 If by some miracle I'm able to produce a slide show, can I somehow save it so that I can view it on a TV screen, ie burn to DVD and put in DVD player connected to plasma TV? Would love to also be able to save a slide show that can be viewed by those on the dark side! Thanks in advance for all help - greatly appreciated. It has a lock switch down the left hand side. When locked the contents is locked. this may be what is causing the problem. Just check and see. Re: Skype phone
Hi All I've been reading with interest, the posts about VOIP and Skype. I haven't gone that way, yet, as I don't fully understand how it works (I know I need to pay extra to my ISP to have VOIP) and if I do go with it, can it be used to make calls to mobiles? I don't need to make many STD or Internat.calls but our phone bill to mobiles is about $120 month (we're with Telstra for local/STD/mobile calls and my ISP is iinet.) I have a cap of $1.70 for 20 minute ISD/mobile calls but most of my mobile calls are for 1 to 3 minutes and cost about $1ea. I assume that when using VOIP, our landline is still active, meaning two people in our house can be having phone conversations, without using a mobile? I see Nathalie has a cap of $60 a month - please tell me more! Does this include local calls? I might be able to ditch Telstra, if any responses can enlighten me. And how much is to buy Skype, or similar? TIA Denise Williams-Photographer MOB 0417 184592 [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi All: I can vouch for Keyspan as well--although one issue I have noticed is that it takes AAA batteries. If you are OK with using the batteries to make calls then that is great; but factor the cost of the batteries into the overall cost of Skype. I call the USA for hours every week and I find that i can have a cap on my phone calls on a regular phone of $60 per month. This makes my regular phone cheaper than Skype! And when people from the USA call me, Skype charges for Australia are either the same as or worse than some of the good deals on telcos there. So don't assume you are getting a great deal because you are using VOIP. Regards, Nathalie Quoting Michael Kane Taylor [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

I know there is good PC software for doing this, such as Pro Show Gold but I'd like to be able to do it on my Intel iMac. Can an iPhoto slideshow be saved for viewing on a PC? Define a Smart Folder
Hi Everyone I'm still trying to get my head around the extras' available with OSX, having recently converted from OS9 so can someone please explain to me, in basic terms, what a smart folder is used for? And does a smart folder become a duplicate of another 'normal' folder? (hope not!) Regards Denise Williams PH 9447 3468 MOB 0417 184592 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Icons have disappeared
Hi All I decided to shutdown my 20 iMac last night and when turning the power on this morning, I have a screen with no little alias icons on the side, where I have my most regularly used application icons, including the Dock, Safari, Entourage etc. I have also lost the clock from top of screen. My several folders are still on the desktop though. How do I go about getting everything to show again? And does this mean whenever I shut down, I'll lose them all again? Any help greatly appreciated. Regards Denise Williams PH 9447 3468 MOB 0417 184592 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Further to image editing
Hi All I read with interest the recent postings about cropping photos - most answers were of course Windows related. I have a friend who would like to use something like Windows Elements (she has latest Intel iMac) but doesn't want to buy anything - yet. I did a google search usingPhotoshop Substitute and one of the solutions was Gimp but when I looked at the download process, I nearly fainted! Way too complicated, all this stuff about X11 window protocoling XDarwin Projects! What the ! Can someone suggest an EASY, FREE or inexpensive downloadable product that will serve the purpose of creating custom sized canvases (iPhoto has too many preset American sizes) so that this friend can put her photos onto cards she wants to print out, with a bit of lettering and a few photos on one card. It's important to be able to create her own sizes. I want to teach her Photoshop but at the moment, cost is an issue. Opening PDF's
Hi all This should be a simple one to solve. I'm on an Intel iMac OS 10.4.4. When viewing PDF's sent via my mail (Entourage) they open in Safari 2.0.4 which is OK but they appear quite small. I go to the Window and press Zoom but it stays the same size. How do I get my PDF's to open in Acrobat so as I can zoom with % ? Any help appreciated. Regards Denise Williams [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Latest printer Drivers for EpsonR310
Hi All I'm using iMac Intel Core duo OS 10.4.7. Does anyone have an Epson R310, running on an Intel Mac? I am getting dreadful prints from my R310. Have tried all configurations of print options but still awful prints. Went to Epson site to upload latest drivers, and there is no update for R310 - only R300. Their info for Intel based macs says they will be updating drivers for R320 in third quarter of this year - BUT what about my R310? Do I try the drivers for R300? Any help greatly appreciated. How to purchase a font
Hi Graphics people Using iMac Intel core duo, OS 10.4.6 I have been trying (for many wasted hours) to purchase a font (called LUNA, in Truetype format) and whenever I go to the page to submit my address details I end up with a message like this: Server error/Application. The site I am using is http://www.fonts.com I've tried all the so-called FREE font sites but it seems LUNA is only available by paying. I'm happy to pay but can't understand why I can't get my order to go through. I've tried about 7 times today. I desperately need this font today (it was happily working as a truetype font on my old G4 in Classic but won't work on iMac in OSX - having imported it, and dropped it into Hardrive, Library). Can anyone please help ie send me this font? TIA Denise Williams PH 9447 3468 MOB 0417 184592 [EMAIL PROTECTED] 55 Duart Rd TRIGG WA 6029

Blackberry - worth buying?
Hi All I've been looking on eBay at a Blackberry 7250 and was wondering whether they're worth buying - I would like to be able to send emails while on the road (I would store some proforma quotes as PDF's) but not sure whether this would be right for me. Does anyone own a Blackberry and if so, do you find them useful? I see one on eBay that has a current bid of $122. Free fonts
Hi late-nighters Using a G4 with OS9.2 Can anyone please suggest a site where I can download some fonts from. I'm particularly after a font called 'chalkboard' or anything that looks handwritten. I have already tried a Truetype version of 'chalkboard' (copied from my Powerbook that is using OSX with Photoshop CS) but it won't open on my G4, which is where I'd rather be doing the work. Have removed a couple of fonts from my System Folder to make room and put the font in there but no success. Would like to get hold of this tonight as I'm trying to finish an urgent job. A Photoshop Query
To Photoshop users I have been helping a friend with Photoshop CS2 on her PC and there is one annoying problem. The marquee tool (top left) has the usual drop downs of a Square/Rectangular marquee, Round/oval marquee etc but when we go to use the Square/Rectangular one, it only comes up as what appears to be a feathered oval. I've tried holding Shift while using Square marquee and also putting Feathering on 1 pixel only but still the same oval shape comes up. Another problem too, is that I went to Preferences - Units Rulers so as to do some accurate positioning, rebooted but no rulers showed up. Should I do a Photoshop - Delete Preferences in her hard drive? (not sure how to on a PC). Any clues would be greatly appreciated - and yes I've told her she needs a Mac! Can't eject CD from iMac
Hi All My daughter has a G3 iMac 400 with DVD player, and she has a CD stuck in it. We've tried all the usuals - rebooting with mouse button held down, re-booting with Option held down, pressing Command E but no luck. There is no CD icon showing and the trash is empty. Is there a secret little button somewhere that we can press? Have reluctantly tried putting a pair of tweezers in but don't want to do this again as I couldn't feel the CD. We know there is something stuck in there as the machine makes a whining noise on startup. TIA Denise Williams-Photographer Ph/fax 08- 9447 3468 Mob 0417 184592 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: Importing text into PSD
Hi Everyone Thanks to respondents about my request to import text into Photoshop. Importing text into PSD
Hi Everyone Is it possible to import editable text into Photoshop? I have PSD version 7 (can update to CS if this needs to be the way to go) and am on OS9. When viewing my text (Appleworks saved as Text) I have other options such as HTML or RTF but neither will open in PSD. The only way I seem to be able to get it into PSD is as a PDF but of course this is not editable. Any help greatly appreciated. Denise Williams-Photographer Ph/fax 08- 9447 3468 Mob 0417 184592

Oh, I don't own one! Actually it is quite funny because I was consulting with a friend whom works with some Federal Department here in Perth, very much a Microsoft Heaven even bloody Microsoft mouse pads and Office mugs, mmm yep! Any way they had a very important document to be printed and signed by some American Consulate official whom was in Perth on his way to Mauritius for holidays. They attempted to open the downloaded 23 page word document which was an attachment in an email from Outlook; no go could not even get document to open in Outlook or Word even to save file as something else. Apple PB to rescue sent email via gmail.com to PB, mail opened it and even the word doc file in TextEdit. But it was not formatted, bugger, slight embarrassment. So, open NeoOffice loaded .doc file and their right before your eyes a formatted .doc file, now I thought that was impressive. But, I went to print no printer all on secure network, rendezvous (bonjour now) seems to be showing something yes it is a HP laser printer. Ah print document it's a go yes 23 pages later and a signature, they still swear by Microsoft. This was after they sent this file around the office a few times to every geek in the office. Response from IT idiot, oh! bloody Mac, must have been a Mac Office document then I showed stunned mullet it was opened by NeoOffice A GNU licensed Office Suite and original email client was Outlook. FW: A photoshop printing problem
-- Forwarded Message From: Denise Williams [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Thu, 24 Mar 2005 11:49:17 +0800 To: Severin Crisp [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: A photoshop printing problem Hi All/Severin I would suggest you keep the mode of the image you want as greyscale, kept to RGB or CMYK (depending on printer). ie do not use that photo as greyscale mode. If it was originally a colour photo, turn it into a black white by playing around with adjustments such as gradient map (make sure the foreground colour is put at black before using this), saturation selective colour. If it was originally black white then as you say, you still need to print it in RGB or CMYK, to suit the rest of the file. You can't get away from that. But if you can get it looking right (using above adjustment suggestions), as an RGB or CMYK file, then it should print the same. Good luck Denise Williams-Photographer Ph/fax 08- 9447 3468 Mob 0417 184592 on 23/3/05 5:21 PM, Severin Crisp at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I am printing art work which is a mix of greyscale and colour in the one print. This is out of Photoshop CS to an Epson 1290S and I am unable to get a really good black and white rendition of the grayscale portions. I can separate the parts of the image into colour and greyscale to separate layers and print separately in two passes but the alignment is not accurate enough so I have to print the lot in colour and the greyscale portions take on a dark greenish cast. I can correct this to some extent manipulating hue and saturation but I just do not get the clear black white and grey that come from a normal printing in black and white. Essentially Photoshop needs to tell the printer to use just black ink (K) on its own for those parts of the print and not to even try to make it up with CMY. I am sure Photoshop is clever enough for this but I am not. Can anyone out there help please? Severin Crisp -- End of Forwarded Message
